El Monte City Council Approves Development Project on Bannister Avenue BY J. SHADÉ QUINTANILLA El Monte residents left Tuesday’s city council meeting in disappointment after the council approved a controversial development project on Bannister Avenue. In a 3-1 vote, with councilmember Juventino “J” Gomez in oppostion and council member Norma Macias absent, the council gave the go-ahead for a private developer to build 22 fourand five- bedroom homes in a vacant lot behind Ledesma High School. Owned by the El Monte
School district, the threeacre lot, along with additional parcels of land, will be sold to DC Corps for a development project that will fill the space with two-story houses. Two of the homes will be designated as affordable housing for low-income families. Along with the 22 housing units, the project also includes a guest parking lot, a widened street for parking and 3,000 square feet of open space. The SEE PG. 16

Without trying to being too cliché, it really is time to stop and smell the roses in Pasadena … particularly at Tournament House, Pasadena’s answer to Buckingham Palace, where officials have been very droughtconscious yet managed to maintain the spectacular rose garden in time for the 2016 Rose Court tryouts. Hundreds of young women (plus a couple of brave young men) started the long, nail-biting process Saturday after which several hundred ‘selfies’ were the big order of the day. And,
where better? The Rose Garden, of course. The fun continued Tuesday as hundreds more compete for a position on the seven-member court of Pasadena’s Royalty. While hundreds of Pasadena-area young women interviewed for the prospect to be part of the 2016 Tournament of Roses Royal Court Saturday, participants from Pasadena and surrounding communities also vie to represent their communities, schools and SEE PG. 18

Firefighters rescued a man and a woman Tuesday in a flood-control wash who were carried away by rainswollen water from Pomona to South El Monte. A bystander reported seeing someone in the wash off Holt Avenue and the 71 Freeway in Pomona at 8:55 a.m., according to Los Angeles County Fire.

County firefighters spotted two people in the wash near Pomona Boulevard and Humane Way in Pomona. Firefighters set up at various locations, including Workman Mill Road and San Jose Creek. They pulled the first person out near Anaheim SEE PG. 17
