Huntington Memorial Hospital Faces Multiple Agency Investigations

COMPLIMENTARY COPY Volume 19, No. 36

By Terry Miller It hasn’t been a good couple of weeks for Huntington Hospital. Actually the year thus far has brought more than its fair share of negative publicity to one of California’s preeminent hospitals. First, the California Nurses’ Association’s (CNA) unionization efforts were seemingly thwarted by RNs who stood by the hospital and the management of HMH. Then, more recently, two nurses fired from the hospital claim the sacking was a direct result of their efforts to unionize. In March, Beacon Media published scores of letters from community members and Registered Nurses on both sides of the issue of unionization. In the final analysis, there were 539 votes against union representation and 445 in favor, with 175 “challenged” ballots pending resolution. The election results will not be finalized until all other charges against Hun-

Ex-Boyfriend Charged in Murder of Monrovia Woman By Terry Miller

A Pasadena man has been charged with killing his former girlfriend whose body was found in her car in Monrovia in June. Jose Roberto Turner, 47, appeared last Monday at Pasadena Superior Court so he could be arraigned on the June 10 murder of Monrovia resident LaJoya McCoy. The arraignment was continued to today. Relatives reported McCoy missing to Monrovia police on June 15 after the 31-year-old didn’t show up for several appointments. Police found evidence of

foul play at McCoy’s apartment and called in the sheriff’s homicide detectives. Investigators did not disclose what evidence was discovered at the dead woman’s Monrovia residence. McCoy’s body was found June 16 in her car parked in the 200 block of West Cypress Avenue in Monrovia, a few blocks from her home. Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau declined to discuss the motive behind the slaying. Turner and McCoy were together for about 10

years and have two children, according to Lewandowski. “They’ve been separated the last two years,” he said. Lewandowski said the couple’s children are safe with other family members. Authorities have not disclosed McCoy’s cause of death. Coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter said there is a security hold on the autopsy report so he cannot discuss details of the case. SEE PG. 17

After another marathon meeting, the Monrovia City Council voted 3-2 to continue working with L.A. Partyworks for the Friday Night Street Fair, but to also bring in another manager as well. Partyworks will continue to control the kiddie rides and will bring in 10 special events each year and, in general, promote the

fair. The weekly operation of the farmer’s market and the street vendors will be handled by Jerry Diaz of Green Leaf Events, Inc. (GLEI). This plan was negotiated by City Manager Oliver Chi with both companies in the weeks since the last council meeting. At the prior SEE PG. 16
