Hundreds of People Retrace Footsteps of Los Angeles’ Settlers BY TERRY MILLER Hundreds of people retraced the footsteps of Los Angeles’ first settlers Saturday as they walked and cycled the nine-mile path from San Gabriel Mission to El Pueblo Historic Monument in commemoration of the city’s 234th birthday. For decades, descendants of the city’s 11 founding families, Los Pobladores, have made the traditional three-hour journey on their own, but in recent years, there’s been an attempt to revive the event and involve more lo-

cal groups, said Lisa Sarno, assistant general manager at El Pueblo. San Gabriel Mayor Jason Pu said many people are unaware that San Gabriel is the birthplace of the Los Angeles region. Starting at 6:30 a.m., walkers traveled down major streets in San Gabriel and Alhambra, including Mission Road and Valley Boulevard, culminating at the historic plaza on Olvera Street. The cyclists were led by Father Tony Diaz.

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. Aug. 31st signed an executive order to bolster California’s preparedness and response to destructive cyber-attacks, which increase the state’s vulnerability to economic disruption, critical infrastructure damage, privacy violations and identify theft. The order directs the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to establish the California Cybersecurity Integration Center (Cal-CSIC), which will be responsible for strengthening the state’s cybersecurity strategy and improving inter-agency, cross-sector coordination to reduce the likelihood and severity of cyber-attacks. Cal-CSIC will

work closely with the California State Threat Assessment System and the U.S Department of Homeland Security and will facilitate more integrated information sharing and communication with local, state and federal agencies, tribal governments, utilities and other service providers, academic institutions and non-governmental organizations. Under the order, CalCSIC will also establish a multi-agency Cyber Incident Response Team to serve as the state’s primary unit to lead cyber threat detection, reporting, and response in coordination with public and private entities across the state.

A Los Angeles man pleaded not guilty to charges that he kidnapped his twoyear-old daughter earlier this week, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Louai Nayel Issa (DOB 1/10/88) was charged with one count each of kidnapping, child stealing, and misdemeanor brandishing a replica gun. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 11 for a preliminary hearing in Department 33 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Whelma Llanos of the Child Abduction Section said Issa allegedly abducted

his daughter on Wednesday during a supervised visit in Chatsworth. Issa is accused of brandishing a replica gun at a Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services worker, the prosecutor added. Issa fled with his daughter, prompting an Amber Alert. The two were found hours later in the Westlake district. The girl was not injured. If convicted as charged, Issa faces up to 14 years in state prison. The case remains under investigation by Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division.

Animal Rights Advocate Laura Jones Takes on the Big Dogs In her latest move to enact change while exposing the deplorable conditions and hidden problems that have long plagued Los Angeles County Shelters, local animal rights advocate Laura Jones and her team launched the All About The Animals LA County Shelter Survey. The survey, which reaches out to rescue related 501c3s in LA County and adjoining counties, urging them to "speak out for shelter animals," is designed to gather thorough and representative feedback from the concerned and unfairly stifled rescue community. Rescuers are encouraged to participate in the survey which can be found by clicking Campaign For Reform Of LA County Animal Shelters at www. allabouttheanimals.org. Jones will share the results of the survey with Su-

pervisor Don Knabe’s team during a meeting scheduled for early next month coinciding with the conclusion of the government sanctioned Department of Animal Care and Control/CEO investigation. The probe was ordered by Supervisor Knabe after Jones addressed the Board of Supervisors on Aug. 18 with her complaint and presented them with a petition signed by more than 5,000 people. Jones first challenged the department on Aug. 5 after capturing and sharing via social media shocking images of dogs wallowing in their own excrement at the Downey Animal Care Center. Appalled, Jones had to take action, despite knowing that throughout the years most calls for change to the DACC fall on deaf Please see page 6
