Hiker rescued via helicopter from Idlehour Campground early Monday Daniel Marine of El Segundo, went to the Cobb Estates area of Angeles National Forest Sunday evening, April 27, 2014, to go for a hike. At approximately 8:45pm, Altadena Sheriff Station received a 911 call from the hiker who stated he had parked his car at Loma Alta Dr. Altadena, at approximately 3:00pm and hiked north into the Angeles National Forest. The hiker had few supplies with him and no flashlight. Shortly after the hiker called the Altadena Sheriff station, his cell phone battery had died. The Altadena Mountain Search and Rescue Team, Los Angeles County Fire Department, and Sierra Madre Search and Rescue teams were activated and responded to the area to look for a missing hiker. Altadena Mountain Search and Rescue Team along with Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter searched the mountains north of where the hiker parked his vehicle. After approximately an hour of searching, Montrose and Sierra Madre Search and Rescue teams joined the search, with a total of 24 persons on the ground searching for the hiker. Throughout the evening the winds picked up and were too high for the helicopter to continue the search. At approximately 4:10am on Monday, April 28, 2014 the hiker was located just north of Idlehour Campground in Eaton Canyon and air lifted to Farnsworth Park, Altadena. The hiker was not injured. Rescuers were able to contact the hikers cell Please see page 2

High School graduation rate tops 80 percent for first time in California history

from the year before . "For the first time in our state's history, more than 80 percent of our students are graduating— a clear sign of their hard work and the support they receive from their teachers, families, and communities,"

Fellow deputies and officers from surrounding law enforcement agencies stood guard at Deputy David March's memorial for a 24 hour vigil on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from midnight until 11:59 pm to honor the sacrifice he made for the communities he loved and served. Deputy David March was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle in Irwindale, California, on April 29, 2002 at approximately 10:40 am. The suspect had stated to friends

For the fourth year in a row, California's graduation rate climbed as the dropout rate fell, particularly for students of color, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced Monday. More than eight out of 10 students statewide,

or 80.2 percent, who started high school in 2009-10 graduated with their class in 2013. That is up 1.3 percentage points from the year before Graduation rates among African-American and Hispanic students climbed faster than the statewide average, although

Mike Gatto’s Bill to protect students’ Social Media data passes Assembly Education Committee Young people who might want to delete an embarrassing or controversial post to social media currently have few options, especially if that young person’s school monitors, collects, and keeps such postings on separate hard drives, forever. Legislation by Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) would help ensure that information collected by school districts about its students’ social media activities cannot come back to hurt students years later. Gatto’s bill, AB 1442,

passed the Assembly Education Committee today by a vote of 7-0. The legislation addresses a growing problem in the social media-driven era: school districts, hoping to identify and prevent bullying, teen suicide, and school violence, are using taxpayer dollars to collect social media information from students and others. The data collected ranges from statements and opinions to personal photos and even videos posted by Please see page 3

the rates remained lower overall. Among AfricanAmerican students, 67.9 percent graduated with their class in 2013, up 1.9 percentage points from the year before. Among Hispanic students, 75.4 percent graduated with their class, up 1.7 percentage points

25th anniversary of friends of the Los Angeles river’s La Gran Limpieza: the Great Los Angeles River Clean-Up

Last weekend hundreds of volunteers, organized by Friends of the Los Angeles River, gathered at the banks of the Los Angeles River at sites from the Sepulveda Basin to Griffith Park, pulling shopping

bags, shoes, and all kinds of debris from the soft-bottom riverbed and leaving behind a cleaner and healthier river for its human, animal and plant community. “This day is an annual reminder of how a com-

munity can come together and transform a city,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who welcomed volunteers to the river before going into the riverbed Please see page 3

The Gardens at Showcase House By Susan Motander

One lovely secret of the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is that visiting the gardens is absolutely free. Park at the Rose Bowl Lot I parking (for free), take the shuttle bus (for free) and wander through the gardens (for free). Of course, the organization will not mind at all if you stop for a little lunch in the restaurant or at the grab ‘n go pub, or if you do a little shopping in the Showcase Shops (remember 25% of what you spend is a tax deductable donation- so save those receipts). And what lovely gardens they are this year. The gardens at this, the 50th Showcase House in the group’s 65-year history are especially delightful for an easy stroll. They range from a formal, balanced entry garden by Gary Fishbeck in front of the house, to a multi-level terraced garden in the rear (Karen Miller) to a quiet spring house with a stream and pond (designed by Steve Sandalis of Mystic Water Gardens). As is usual at the Showcase House, there is a pool. This year the design is by Pacific Outdoor Living. Rather than updating a badly outdated old pool, the company completely replaced it with a pool of a whole new design and the addition of a spa and a fire pit. The fun part is the pool can be controlled from a smart phone (image being stuck in traffic on your way home and being able to start heating up your spa even before you arrive home). If outdoor living is your preference, Jan Ledgard of Yorkshire Kitch-

ens has added an outdoor kitchen (complete with a television set) outfitted with Al Fresco appliances. She has even added a vegetable garden in addition to tucking a few veggies in among the annuals in the flower garden. For those who prefer simple meditation and a calming spot there is a lily pond with goldfish (no these are not young koi) and red minnows. The designer here, Jon Rasmussen, has two creative solutions to backyard pond problems: the pond’s filter is in the large fountain pot in the center of the pond and there is a motion sensing water spray to deter those pesky raccoons (don’ t worry it is turned off during the hours showcase is open so you won’t be soaked). For the orchid lovers in this world there are two houses – a glass enclosed greenhouse and a breezy lath house). Delores Kroop even solved the problems of ugly florescent lights. She had created balsa wood and handmade paper shades that enclose the fixtures. For those concerned about the sustainability of the garden, FormLA’s Kirk and Cassie Aoyagi have put a bioswale to deal with water runoff. As always their garden features drought tolerant and native plants. And there is almost always someone on hand in their garden to answer questions. Speaking of asking questions, there are docent lead tours of the gardens every day Showcase House is open. These tours are given at 10:30 and 1:30

each day, and yes, they are also free. Think of what a charming Mother’s Day outing a tour through the gardens would be, topped up with lunch or a snack at Showcase, and (if you forgot a gift for Mom) a bit of shopping in the Showcase Shops. Most people will never own a giant mansion or an estate of 3.5 acres, but the small ideas garnered at Showcase can be applied in any home. This is especially true of the garden concepts. Those light fixtures in the greenhouse look doable, and the garden markers in Jan’s vegetable garden, anyone can make (look closely, this idea alone is worth the trip to showcase). Another great idea that most people forget is that showcase is open late three days a week and therefore a great after work spot. Rather than crawling home in bumper to bumper traffic on Fridaynight, why not park at the Rose Bowl and take that free shuttle to the Showcase House to enjoy a little glass of wine in the pub and relax while taking in the garden. Or stroll through the gardens to appreciate the lighting added by the designers to highlight various garden features. The gardens take one a whole new aspect at dusk and in the early evening. Showcase House is open until 9 pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings (the last house tour is set for 7:30 p.m.). that he wanted to kill a police officer during a traffic stop. The suspect intentionally got stopped and waited for Deputy March to get in front of his patrol car so he could open fire, as Deputy March would have no place to take cover. Deputy March was shot several times in the head and chest.

The suspect, who was identified shortly after the shooting, fled to Mexico where he remained for 4 years. On February 23, 2006, the suspect was arrested in Mexico by US Marshals and Mexican federal agents following a joint investigation. He was extradited back to California and on March

2nd, 2007, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Deputy March had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 7 years. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

teens online (or any other member of the public who mentions a high school or other campus property in a post). While the data collection serves a noble purpose, current law does not address how long the data may be kept, when it must be destroyed, or whether parents are made aware of the collection policies. “When taxpayer dollars are being used by a government agency, such as a school district, to monitor what is going on outside the classroom, parents and students have a right to know what that data is being used for and how long it will be stored,” said Gatto. “Imagine the harm that could be caused if a hacker, mean-spirited employee, or even a careless IT worker were to expose a database of all of the

things a person said or did as a teenager.” AB 1442 would create reasonable standards of privacy that school districts must follow when they use taxpayer dollars to collect and analyze, or contract with a third-party entity to collect and analyze, data that students post to social media websites, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The measure requires that parents be notified of the collection policies and students be given the opportunity to examine information collected about them. Finally, it requires that any such information be destroyed within one year of the student turning eighteen years of age or leaving the district. The bill now goes the Assembly floor for a vote of the full chamber.

in his own long sleeves and work gloves to look for trash. “By bringing us back to the river year after year to clean it and care for it, FoLAR has opened Angelenos’ eyes to a wonder hidden in plain sight.” Col. Kimberley Colloton, Commander and District Engineer of the Los Angeles District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, joined the cleanup with volunteer Corps members and their families. “The men and women of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers have a longstanding commitment to the Los Angeles River,” she said. “We’re proud to be a part of this annual event and to be partners with the city and FoLAR. We all have a responsibility

to be good stewards of our environment and to protect the benefits that this river provides. Together we can do great things.” Simply by showing up, clean-up volunteers joined one of the biggest urban environmental transformations underway in the entire United States. FoLAR began the River Clean-up as a way to improve the health and habitat of the river as well as to help residents connect to one of the city’s underappreciated natural treasures. “Twentyfive years ago, I called for 10,000 people to show up,” said Lewis MacAdams, president and co-founder of FoLAR. “About ten did. But it’s continued to grow and grow.”

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Woman targeted in grocery store wallet theft On Friday, April 11, 2014, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a call for service regarding a theft. The female victim reported while shopping at a grocery store located on the 24200 block of Magic Mountain Parkway her wallet was stolen from her purse by an unknown suspect. The victim’s purse was in a shopping cart in the upper basket area while she shopped inside the store. The victim was approached by a woman who asked her a couple of questions. She answered the questions and the woman walked away. Shortly after speaking with the woman, the victim noticed her wallet was stolen. The victim believes the woman spoke to her with the intent to distract her so a second suspect could steal her wallet. Following the theft of the wallet, an unidentified suspect used the victims’ credit cards to purchase several thousand dollars-

worth of merchandise at a nearby retail location in the same shopping center. The purchase appears to have taken place mere minutes after the theft of the wallet. Detectives from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station initiated an immediate investigation into the theft and fraudulent use of the victim’s credit card. The investigation revealed a female (pictured in the attached photograph) entered the retail location posing as the victim and used her credit cards to purchase items. Detectives are still trying to determine if the suspect shown in the attached photographs worked alone or with a crime partner (second suspect). Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Deputies are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the female seen in the attached photograph. If you have any information regarding these incidents

please contact Detective Marino at 661-255-1121 or atMTMarino@lasd.org - If you wish to remain anonymous, call "LA Crime Stoppers" by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or using the websitehttp://lacrimestoppers.org Lastly, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputies want to remind you that purses or wallets taken from shopping carts in grocery and other stores is a fairly common crime. It doesn’t take a lot of inattention for a stealth thief to quietly steal a purse or wallet. Do not leave your purse unattended for even a second. Be aware of where your purse is and whether anyone is around. Keep the top of your purse snapped and secured so a thief can’t reach in and snatch your wallet. Please also remember to maintain your purse vigilance as you load groceries into your car.

Torlakson said. "We are continuing toward our goal of graduating 100 percent of our students with the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed." To view and download state, county, district, and school graduation and dropout rates, visit the California Department of Education's DataQuest. Downloadable data sheets are available on the Cohort Outcome Data Web page. Caution is urged when comparing graduation or dropout rates across individual schools and districts. For example, some county office schools, alternative schools, or dropout recovery high schools serve only those students who are already at the greatest risk of dropping out, compared with the broader population at traditional high schools. Therefore, these individual schools and districts cannot be directly compared.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-573-1965 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com , using the

file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-13-598980-JB . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee, or the Mortgagee’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only.
