EMUHS Food Service Department honored In 1993, Americans first witnessed what is now one of the country’s most highly recalled and beloved ad campaigns, “got milk?”. Two decades later, the brand and its creator, the California Milk Processor Board (CMPB), are still going strong. It’s taken tireless work from Californians and local communities to make this milestone – and everything got milk? stands for - possible. From hundreds of regional events where the brand has participated and through its numerous ad campaigns since 1993, got milk? has touched and been touched by millions of consumers across the Golden State. To celebrate the brand’s 20 year anniversary and history of community service, the CMPB announced today that local Los Angeles non-profit El Monte Unified High School Food Service Department is among its 20

exemplary winners of the CMPB’s commemorative anniversary program, the got milk? 20 Awards. “The got milk? 20 Awards are CMPB’s way of thanking leaders such as El Monte Unified High School Food Service Department that improve the lives of others through service,” said Steve James, Executive Director of the CMPB. “There is no better way to celebrate our milestone anniversary than by saluting El Monte Unified High School Food Service Department and 19 other positive role models for their untiring work in their communities.” El Monte Unified High School Food Service Department is among the 20 winners chosen through a nomination process held among all California milk processors and their related agencies. Over 80 inspiring leaders were nominated

across the state. Candidates were judged on the nature of their work, their contributions to improving the quality of life of others and overall effectiveness in their service area. In addition to receiving a commemorative got milk? 20 Award, the CMPB will also present each winner with a $1,000 cash prize. 20 Award winners included: Los Angeles: Ability First, Long Beach; Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN), Los Angeles; El Monte Unified High School District Food Services Department; InnerCity Struggle, East Los Angeles; Duke Welliver & the Peaceful Warrior Martial Arts Academy, San Clemente; Christmas in the Classroom, Fontana and Champions for Change – Desert Sierra Program, Riverside/San Bernardino/ Palm Springs.

By Emmy Hernandez Certified Financial Planner® Practitioner Attorney at Law Hi Emmy, I enjoy reading your Facebook posts. They’re often pretty serious, so I really liked the ‘Cows can be a good savings vehicle’ article. Great fun - Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed the more lighthearted fare. One can be earnest without always insisting on being literal. The short article you mentioned was published in The Economist, a magazine not known for its sense of humor. Initially I, too, got a good laugh out of the headline – but once I read on, I realized the article touched on several points that I also espouse. The fact is: saving money is essential for retirement planning and few of us save enough. The reason is rather

obvious: spending is more gratifying than saving. Immediate pleasures are easier to appreciate than future joys. Classic myopia. Because defined benefit plans are being replaced by defined contribution plans, we, not our employers, must decide for ourselves how much to sock away and when we should access these funds. My rule of thumb is that most households will require about seventy percent of their combined salaries as an adequate retirement income. If you’re comfortable with your current lifestyle with household earnings of $100,000, you’ll probably need to bring in $70,000 in retirement income to maintain the same quality of life. To save such a large nest egg takes years of financial fortitude. What adds to the challenge is the desire to pull money away from future savings to spend on today’s needs and desires. This is where the concept of investing in a cow caught my attention – not just my funny bone. Getting cash out of a cow is much harder than taking money from a savings account. That heifer is not exactly a liquid asset – unless you milk her, which we’ll get to in a minute. For folks who may be prone to draw down their retirement accounts, locking

those funds into a long term investment vehicle can be the best game plan to tame the temptation to spend. Long term annuities can be difficult to cash out and in turn yield attractive returns. As long as the issuer maintains its claim paying ability, forgoing the right to withdraw funds until a specified age is reached can be an important safeguard. Now if you’re going to invest in a cow – or another retirement savings plan - you don’t want to simply park the beast in your back yard. Put her to work. Establish an interest-yielding savings account and start diverting extra money to it on a regular basis. To make your money work harder, you might consider investing in a couple of cows and start a diversified private portfolio. Accumulating a few good Guernseys may not be glamorous, but such a strategy can help you to get rich steadily and safely. Oh, and please keep reading EH Financial’s Facebook posts.
