Sierra Madre Art Walk August 2 On Friday evening, August 2, from 5:00-9:00 p.m., downtown Sierra Madre will be bustling with creativity as local artists and musicians join with over twenty-five small businesses and restaurants to celebrate art and community during the Sierra Madre Art Walk (SMArt Walk). SMArt Walk has been formally launched by local businesses, artists and musicians. Through regular exhibitions in downtown Sierra Madre, the SMArt Walk’s mission is to increase community awareness and appreciation of the arts, and to encourage interaction between local artists and the public by providing artists with a supportive network that fosters the creative economy. 5 community meetings on tap to discuss Sierra Madre water crisis First meeting August 14

BY SHEL SEGAL Sierra Madre city officials announced on Tuesday five upcoming community meetings to talk to the public about the city’s ongoing water crisis. The meetings will mostly deal with the discussion of water rates, but will also talk about water conservation issues, said City Manager Elaine Aguilar. The first meeting will be 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 in Sierra Madre City Hall council chambers and will talk about the water and sewer department’s budget, finances and the water bond debt. The second meeting will be 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 in the city’s maintenance yard and will deal with the capital and longterm master plan and the sewer and water system needs. The third meeting will be 9 a.m. on Sept. 14 in the maintenance yard and will feature how the water gets into your tap. The fourth meeting will be 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 in council chambers Please see page 27

Arcadia School District reaches agreement in transgender student's rights case The United States entered into a settlement agreement with the Arcadia Unified School District in Arcadia, to resolve an investigation into allegations of discrimination against a transgender student based on the student’s sex. Under the agreement, approved by the

district’s school board unanimously at the most recent meeting, the school district will take a number of steps to ensure that the student, whose gender identity is male and who has consistently and uniformly presented as a boy at Please see page 11

Murder attempted suicide in South San Gabriel On Sunday morning a south San Gabriel man remained in hospital with a serious head wound after fatally shooting the mother of their 2-year-old son early Sunday before shooting and seriously wounding himself, LASD said. The Hispanic man and woman were in their early20s, according to friends and Los Angeles County sheriff's officials. Authorities did not release their names. The woman died at the scene of the 7:35 a.m. shooting at a house on Celito Drive at San Gabriel Boulevard, sheriff's Sgt. Jorge Marchena said. Her body lay just outside the rear door of the home, covered by a tarp. Deputies first responded to the home after a male inside the called 9-1-1 to report the shooting. Homicide detectives have since learned that both victims were involved in a relationship and had a child together. The incident is currently being investigated as a murder-attempted suicide according to LASD.
