Hawks Midget Football. The city-sponsored team rose to Junior All American Football Conference winners and League champions this season. “We’re really proud of you guys — these are all our kids,” said Councilwoman Tzeitel Paras-Caracci. Later in the evening, the Council voted unanimously to again sponsor Hawks Football with $12,191 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. Also chosen for $12,191 in CDBG funding is Duarte Youth Athletic Club, which offers youth baseball and softball programs. Both group received
similar grants last year. Due to a change in allocation procedures, this year, only two of three groups that previously received CDBG funds could receive funding this year, according to city staff. In what Mayor John Fasana said was a “difficult decision,” CDBG funds were denied to a third group, Southland Opera, which provides music composition classes to elementary and middle schools in Duarte and some other surrounding area cities.
