Without Beginning…Without End

PART ONE

T

he history of Oceanside begins long before the European settlers came to this area. It seems only fitting to start a new year off at the beginning, where life along the central east coast of Vancouver Island truly began.

The Coast Salish is made up of several tribes in this part of Vancouver Island.

They are a nomadic culture who have always been here. With no beginning, they believe they have no end. They date back at least 12,000 years with archeological evidence that has been uncovered. Among the many tribes, there is a variety of languages and cultures with the local people speaking in the Pentlatch language. They believe the steelhead and bears are their brothers, therefore they do not hunt them. They believe cedar is always alive and the most versatile of all trees and used it to build homes, canoes and weave clothing. They have a legend of

the glacier in Courtenay. They believe a whale is trapped in the ice and one day, when a great flood comes, they believe the whale will save the people as it has in the past.

through the territory and wherever they were was where they lived. They would travel from place to place according to the food they required from the ocean.

Eventually each band settled into areas of their territory. The first native village at the mouth of the Big Qualicum River was originally called Saatlaam/Saatlelp, meaning; “The place of the green leaves.”

Long ago, they were one of the most populous indigenous groups along the Pacific Northwest coast. Over time, a few factors are responsible for their decreasing numbers. They suffered many attacks from other indigenous groups like the Haida who are famous for killing the Coast Salish people, burning their villages and taking some of their people as slaves and their women as wives. They also suffered as a result of the White influx which reduced their territories and brought diseases they never had encountered before, like the smallpox epidemic in 1862. But, no matter what they have encountered, they have endured through it all.

It is the site of an infamous massacre in 1855, witnessed after-the-fact by a group of Hudson’s Bay explorers led by twenty-six year old Adam Grant Horne.

It is believed, they were the first white people to have contact with the Natives in this area. It was a horrible event that stayed with Adam Horne and one he retold almost thirty years later in 1883 to W. Wymond Walkem, who published Adam’s memory of the event in 1914.

The Coast Salish - continued men along the central east coast of Vancouver Island to search for a Native trail that would lead across the island to Barclay Sound.

Adam and his men arrived just south of the Big Qualicum River in the very early morning. They came to shore about a mile south of the river and took in some rest. One of Adam’s men heard something and woke him with stealthy silence and pointed to the water where boat-loads of Haida Indians were making their way into the mouth of the Big Qualicum River.

Adam recounted the event, “We were fully awake without any loss of time, and from the edge of the timber we saw these large northern canoes enter the creek, one after the other, and disappear behind the brush which bordered the banks of the stream. Then, we took breakfast, and while doing so, thick volumes of smoke arose from the creek and poured down across the front of the timber where we lay concealed.

We waited patiently to see whether those Haida Indians would return or not. It was fully twelve o’clock before the first of them came into view in the lower reaches of the creek. We were horrified at the antics of these demons in human shape, as they rent the air with their shouts and yells. One or two of those manning each canoe would be standing upright, going through strange motions and holding a human head by the hair in either or both hands…In an hour’s time they were all out of sight behind a bend in the shoreline. There was no doubt in our mind but that we were about to face some dreadful tragedy.”

Adam and his men made their way to the village and found the tribe massacred. Most had been

mutilated and murdered. Only one woman had survived long enough to give an account of what had happened, before she died.

The tribe was asleep when the Haida crept into the village undetected. More than half of the villagers were murdered as they slept. The rest were swiftly executed, with five Haidas to every villager. The last woman, wounded by a spear, seized a bow and fled to the side of the creek, where she lay hidden against the bank until found

by Horne and his party. The Haida warriors took two young Qualicum women, four little girls and two boys. The murderous expedition was, allegedly, an act of revenge against the Salish for killing a Haida who attempted to abduct the daughter of a chief on Quadra Island.

After the last villager died, Horne and his men found an Indian trail that led to a lake now known as Horne Lake. From there, they continued westward over the mountains to Alberni Inlet and Barclay Sound, completing their expedition.

It should be noted, that despite Adam Horne's re-telling of the incident, many researchers are uncertain about his version of the story and still ponder the possibility that Horne himself organized the massacre to secure trail access to the Alberni Valley and Barclay Sound through Qualicum First Nation territory.

Facts grow hazy with time and the truth about that fateful day may never be fully known. ~ Read Part II in next month’s issue to learn more about the people of the Qualicum First Nation and the history of Oceanside.

In 1881, one of the little girls who was kidnapped by the Haida and taken to Niska, returned to “the place of the green leaves” at the Qualicum River, the place "Where the Dog Salmon Run" in the Pentlach language.

STARTING OVER WHEN YOU CAN’T

W

e have just seen the end of what was for me the worst December I have ever experienced. I’ve been trying to help someone else through a loss of a loved one - a loss not through death but through a tragic maze of lies, betrayal, gossip, exile, the dark side of social media, violence, fundamentalist dogma, and life threatening danger. The concluding scenes of this Shakespearean tragedy have not yet been written. In the end (which will be a beginning), it will require shifts of consciousness, changes in thoughts and patterns of days, I hope your days have been happier, but perhaps these tools and strategies will be useful to you as well.

We can’t solve this dream of life.

Sometimes we heal wounds and resolve mysteries, but more often, all we can do is let go and start over – to try again with a clean slate, an open mind, a fresh outlook or mere stamina.

January is the one time of year when starting over is a ritual which we all acknowledge. We’re encouraged to set new goals, throw out the chipped china and make a toast to new possibilities.

But it’s not easy. What’s our resistance to change?

Sometimes, starting over is legitimately painful. The efforts of years crumble, the house burns down, or we lose someone.

This is a serious journey we have embarked upon, and we often long for the know-how to travel it better.

Our New Year’s resolutions usually take a physical form, but the resolutions that serve us best are the subtle, freeing shifts that take place quietly and quickly whenever we let go of the past and open 1 0

up to new possibilities. How can we encourage that to happen?  Begin Again, Again. We can’t change the past, but we can commit ourselves to awakening - moment by moment, breath by breath. Most wisdom traditions recommend beginning each day, meal, endeavour or whatever with an awareness of beginning, marking it with a prayer, a phrase, a breath, or at least a good thought. The Sufis and Moslems use the word Bismillah, “We begin again in the Name of the One.” The Hindus use special mantras. Christians are encouraged to “Let go, let God.” In Buddhism, they emphasize the power of the Beginner's Mind. We are never done with beginning again!  Make a Plan. When we have experienced trauma, the goal is not to forget what happened, but “to break a cycle of fear, rage, exhaustion and depression” that follows a serious trauma. Trauma can’t be fixed. The goal is to move forward. If left unresolved, we can get stuck on the rage pathway for decades.

In his book Surviving Survival, L. Gonzales wrote, “We do know that active coping, planning and undertaking organized activities, does work to temper rage and grief.”

Studies have shown that our brains are structured so that we can’t be on the “rage” pathway and the “seeking” pathway at the same time.

So a recommended strategy is to do something - make a plan and carry it out. Go to school, study violin, build a table, teach someone to read. Make an organized, proactive, intentional plan with an attainable goal - “assertive goal-

directedness.” The seeking pathway (or the wanting system) counterbalances the rage pathway, as they use the same areas of the brain. (The same is true of depression and fear.) We can’t rage and plan at the same time.

There are also areas of the brain that when activated make us feel safer. Those areas are stimulated by “learning a new habit or skill, and the performance of organized, repetitive, patterned activities, perhaps even knitting.” One woman who had lost her child says that knitting saved her from insanity. Knitting’s smooth, repetitive physical activity is the equivalent of stalking. She then reached out to teach other women in grief, which further helped her recover.

Other suggestions in Surviving Survival: Learning is its own reward for the brain.

Learning a new skill or habit makes us happy. Pursuing education can be a life saver. Travel creates a new map of reality inside us. Even walking helps.

Strong social bonds and connections release oxytocin which reduces stress and makes us feel good and feel love.

Helping others is even more powerful.

Ritual creates a structure and strategy for healing.  Making Use of Rituals. Throughout history, rituals have helped us to hold to what we value and point the way to where we want to go. Somehow we have lost most of our collective rituals.

“But those rituals were empty!” our modern minds exclaim. Well, of course those rituals are empty. Rituals are always empty. It’s the content that matters.

A ritual is the empty shell that gives structure to something that we value but which may be too formless, ephemeral or transcendent to hold its shape alone.

Like a candle mold, a ritual is a way that something formless becomes tangible and present for us.

What happened to the traditional rituals? Many we have outgrown or no longer understand. Some were bought out, outlawed or out-shouted. Some were too small for our diverse society.

We dropped some rituals because we no longer knew what we believed.

Sometimes we were embarrassed and didn’t want to reveal our vulnerability.

In reality, we have rituals galore. Coffee and the news; family dinner, checking our phones and the mirror, shaking hands, hugging our kids, wearing ties and matching socks, calling home. We go to church, choir, the gym or council meeting, donate to the Food Bank, eat birthday cakes.

We might be more inclined to call these routines rather than rituals, but there is a blurring of the lines between the ordinary and the sacred. To paraphrase writer Anne Lamott’s pastor: “You’re going to worship something…so choose something worthy of your worship.”

Likewise, regardless of our relationship with the invisible, we will also have beliefs that will define us and commit ourselves to something.

Lighting a candle in the morning, we realign with … with…with what? That’s the problem. Our hands and chit-chatty words can’t grasp such subtle things.

That’s why we need the candle! In order to say the things that words can’t say.

To reconnect us to the depths that our sound bite world has lost touch with.

Life is subtle; it arises from sources unknown. As “modern” as we are, there are things we long for, almost remember and miss. There are mysteries we cannot fathom. Rituals help us stay open to those mysteries.

 Meditation in its simplest form is the process of shifting the spotlight of our attention from the outside world to the inside world.

Some people get nervous when we close our eyes for reasons other than going to sleep. “Hey! What are you doing in there?” “Just watching.” “Watching what?” As it turns out, what we are watching is invisible. Thoughts, feelings, emotions, intuition, energy, silence, and pure consciousness…we can’t see these, but we can watch them.

In the West, many erroneously consider meditation to be solely a religious activity. That association has roots in political decisions of the Middle Ages.

In the Middle Ages, it went like this.

Science got to study the hard stuff (matter), the royalty got to own it, and as their piece of the pie, the church got jurisdiction over all things invisible. The whole inner world was lumped together – thoughts, emotions, dreams, feelings, archetypes, the unconscious, spirits, angels, ghosts and God. If you couldn’t see it, the church owned it. That wasn’t fair to the church or the inner world.

Until we begin to explore our inner world, we are its slaves. The party line is “What you don’t know can’t hurt you,” but as Carl Jung, the famous Swiss psychologist put it, “What you don’t know, controls you.”

Our goal in “closing our eyes” may be to tame or focus the mind, watch, transcend, or awaken. We may be looking for greater peace, freedom, health, inspiration, stillness, or Truth.

We may seek to be a channel of peace and healing in this world. Regardless of our goal, the basic approach is the same.

Close your eyes and stay awake!  The world is not an easy place right now. In the midst of so much suffering, we often feel powerless to help, so we do nothing – or run the other way. But one of the ways to relieve our own suffering is to relieve the suffering of others.

A friend in her final days spent long periods of time in the hospital and emergency room. I asked her how she managed to stay so positive. “I pray,” she answered. As she was a Buddhist, her prayers were more like silent, goodwill offerings. “May that woman have a peaceful night sleep.” “Let that man find his son.” Her practice gave her peace and strength.

We each stand beside the “collective pool of suffering”, but we are not powerless. For we each hold an empty cup in our hands and have the power to scoop up water from the pool of suffering, and pour it on the earth. It doesn’t matter where we are, or how limited our apparent power. Our small acts of compassion will shrink the pool of suffering everywhere. Is it possible to tend the pool of suffering and not fall in? Yes. The pool of suffering may not be our own – but it is our own. We shrink if we ignore it; we are no help if we drown in it. Even in the midst of confusion and dark times, if our hearts and hands are engaged, our lives then have meaning – and meaning generates the happiness and peace we are looking for.

Many of you are familiar with the phrase Be Here Now, from spiritual teacher and author, Ram Dass. When his Indian guru, Neem Karoli, told Ram Dass that he must return to America, Ram Dass protested. “But what shall I do?” Neem Karoli put it all in three words. “Love, Serve and Remember.”

“Love everyone, serve where you can, and remember God.” (Substitute a word for that which is sacred in your own life; your vertical connection to the depths.)

It’s a tall order, I know, but it will give us something to gnaw on in 2018.  With that note, we wish you, your family, and all of us on this small planet a happier and meaning-filled New Year, next year and many years to come.

Sandra, a Registered Acupuncturist (RAc), completed her studies as a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Calgary, Alberta (DTCM) at the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Following her dream, Sandra brought her skills and passion for helping others to Vancouver Island; opening her own clinic in the wonderful community of Bowser in 2016.

Sandra's interest in Chinese Medicine began 10 years ago after a ski accident left her with extensive facial nerve damage.

Encouraged by her naturopath to try acupuncture, she was successfully treated after only one session! The experience left her eager to learn more about this amazing modality and she enrolled at the DTCM, a decision that changed her life entirely.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FIRST VISIT.

our first visit with Sandra will consist of a 90-minute assessment and treatment; follow-up visits are 60 minutes.

During your first session, Sandra asks questions about each body system to better understand your current health.

Chinese medicine seeks to find the root issue, then treats the root problem which in turn helps to treat the branches (symptoms) of an ailment.

Sandra looks for patterns of disharmony. When Qi (your circulating life force) and blood are blocked from their usual smooth flow, this creates disharmony and possibly pain and disease.

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine help bring balance and the "smooth flow" of blood and Qi back to the body.

From my own experience, Sandra has helped me regain much of the energy I lost during months of chemotherapy this year.

Acupuncture treatments also helped me through a painful bout of bursitis and eliminated a hardened vein caused by dozens of intravenous infusions. I find my sessions with Sandra relaxing and rejuvenating and believe my recovery from the effects of chemotherapy will be shorter because of acupuncture. RDN Transit: Introducing Kids Ride the Bus Program - Getting children excited about riding the bus safely is important in creating life skills and life-long riders.

Our new Kindergarten to Grade 5 school program teaches kids how to ride the bus. BC Transit has worked with educational experts to build the Kids Ride the Bus program using aspects of the province’s concept-based learning approach for today’s curriculum. The program supports teachers and students with activity books, a kids’ peer-topeer learning video and a selection of curriculum activities.

Now that a service area has been established and project funding is secured, the RDN can move forward with completion of outfall design and tendering and construction of the sewer system. The project team will work closely with provincial and federal regulators to ensure regulatory obligations are met in a timely manner.

Bowser Village Centre Wastewater Project Service Area Established The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Board adopted bylaws establishing the Bowser Village Sanitary Sewer Service and its funding mechanisms, and staff are proceeding with the next steps of the Bowser Village Centre Wastewater Project.

Bowser wastewater servicing is an opportunity to bring the vision of the Bowser Village Plan into a reality. Many Area H residents helped the RDN create the Bowser Village Plan, which is based on 20 years of discussions, a great deal of community involvement and focusses on the goal of creating a small village with services that would benefit all residents in the Lighthouse community.

The creation of a service area means that the RDN can now access up to $7,590,328 in Clean Water & Wastewater Grant funding earmarked for the project. The project’s two other funding sources, property owner contributions and development cost charges, are also now secured. A petition process in August 2017 saw a majority of Bowser Village Centre property owners submit petitions in favor of sewer servicing, and the associated $500,000 required to pay for the property owners’ portion of the project costs.

Further to this, a $2.6 million Development Cost Charges Front-ender Amendment Agreement was approved by the Regional Board. This agreement enables participating developers to pre-purchase development units, allowing future development to pay for a large portion of the sewer system 1 6

The curriculum engages the students with concepts such as public transit and the environment, transit history in the community, how to plan a bus trip and transit route planning. These concepts allow students to explore the concept of how travel choices impact the community and its environment, building life skills by understanding how maps and schedules are related and creating a bus route using planning methodology.

Schools can order activity books at no cost, schools are encouraged to have all interested classes from Kindergarten to Grade 5 participate. The books include activities such as word searches, a maze, spot the difference and connect the dots.

In addition to the activity books there are also opportunities to have a Transit Ambassador attend the school with a bus. The Ambassador will engage the students and explain how to ride the bus, provide local transit history and fun facts, and wrap up with a tour of the bus to reinforce the student’s passenger skills. The bus will remain stationary during the visit. Presentations to each class will take approximately 45 minutes.

This year’s 16th Seedy urges us to ‘Sow, Grow, Enjoy’, and the days’ offerings will give gardeners, whether novices or experts, a wealth of seeds, plants, ideas, books, and tools, plus the inevitable dreams and expectations inherent in gardening.

One of Seedy’s most anticipated activities is the Seed Swap. Here you can bring in your own little packages of saved and carefully dried and stored seeds, and exchange them for others’ seeds of different varieties. This is an exciting part of ‘Seedy’ because there’s always a good chance of finding just the seeds you’ve been looking for, or successful seeds from countries around the world, brought here generations ago by gardeners new to Canada. If you are without seeds of your own to exchange you may purchase seed packets at a very nominal price.

Every year Seedy offers the expertise of two well known and knowledgeable speakers in their morning and afternoon talks for interested gardeners. From 10:30 till noon, media personality and garden consultant Donna Balzer will address at least two of ‘Seedy’s’ 2018 themes in her talk "Three Tips to Sow and Grow a Better Food Garden". From 12:30 till 2:00, our own ‘seasoned west coast gardener’ Kathy Claxton will share some good advice on ‘Seedy’s’ third theme,: “Keep Calm … Plant On … Make Gardening Fit YOU!” To keep up your inquisitive strength and anticipation, look for the Master

Over 70 vendors of gardening seeds, tools, books, plants, and garden produce, and widgets to make your garden special will keep you wandering the halls of ‘Seedy’. A table to look for is the “Seeds of Diversity” display.

This organization along with local garden aficionados is responsible for the beginnings of Seedy Saturdays. Its publications are full of gardening tips and info and good instructions on seed saving.

For young gardeners in the making, check out Milner Gardens' ‘Shoots with Roots’ programme offered by Milner Gardens and Woodland in Qualicum Beach.

To help you tidy up your garden shed for the coming season, the Town of Qualicum Beach will be offering free collection of old pesticides/herbicides at their truck in the parking lot at the event.

his poem arose from a visit to the Orkney Islands off the north tip of Scotland. They're so windswept they have few trees, but they have many ancient ruins. It was the annual Folk Festival, much of which takes place in village halls, and I was surprised by the number of excellent fiddlers and cellists for the size of the population. Then I considered how it must be there in winter, with bad weather and, because of the northern latitude, short days and long nights.

Suddenly, I realized why there were so many fine instrumentalists!

MIDWINTER MUSIC

The hawthorn branches’ lightning lines are paralleled by seams of white as snowfall mantles them, each jagged angle traced, each pronged and ragged fork embalmed, perhaps embraced.

ABOUT THIS POEM

his poem has four stanzas, each in a form I made up: six lines rhymed aabcbc, where the a-rhymes are partial and the b- and c-rhymes full. Lines 1, 2, 3, and 6 have four beats each and lines 4 and 5, two each.

his poem won the 2015 "String Poet Prize" and was published in "String Poet". The award included creation and performance of a classical music composition inspired by the poem and a twohour presentation ceremony in Long Island, New York. I attended, heard the music, and recited the poem. ~

Around the fields, old stunted pines grow flocculent with flakes. Despite the fires within, the farms are wooled with snow, their sills and gutters ruled and cushioned with small corniced hills.

The drystone dikes have scalloped crests.

On open moors, the windward sides of standing stones blockade the blow, black and upright, till driving snow feathers them into background white.

The moaning wind stravaigs and quests but one communal call abides as flurries hover, glide, and fall among the drifts— inside a hall a cellist's hand position-shifts.

DAZZLE PATTERNS BY ALISON WATT reviewed by Mary Ann Moore

D

azzle patterns are throughout Alison Watt’s first novel in “the blackand-white dazzle pattern of a supply ship,” the hull of the Olympic “gleaming white, blue, and black dazzle patterns,” and a canvas depicting a winter scene, “a ship in the middle distance, dazzle-patterned” as painted by Arthur Lismer.

Lismer, who would become a member of the Group of Seven, is one of the characters in Alison Watt’s novel set in 1917, modelled after a real person.

He “is known for his paintings of the ships in dazzle patterns in the Halifax harbour,” Watt says in her author’s notes.

As Lismer explains to two art students who are key characters in the novel, Fred Baker and Clare Holmes: “Patterns break up the silhouette of the ship at sea. Not so much camouflage as artifice.” There’s no actual proof that the patterns helped when facing the enemy during World War I (1914-1918), but as Lismer says: “Can’t make sense of what is right in front of you.” The artifice, the hiding in plain sight, is a theme of the novel.

Creativity, and the transformative aspects of it, could be said to be a theme as well as Fred is a glass craftsman at a Halifax glass factory.

He has ideas for other works including windows with dazzle patterns.

Another of Fred and Clare’s teachers is Mary Hamilton who is based on the real life artist Mary Ritter Hamilton, “one of the most accomplished and unsung Canadian artists of her time.”

Near the end of the book, Clare remembers what Mary said about negative space. “That absence which can define objects, sometimes the key to seeing the true shape of things.”

The timeframe of the novel is just before and following the Halifax explosion which occurred on December 6, 1917 when two ships, one laden with explosives, collided in Halifax Harbour. Watt feels a personal connection to the event as her grandmother arrived in Halifax, from the Annapolis Valley, shortly after the explosion, “to fill one of the many empty jobs.”

Various settings are described in the novel, following the shattering effects of the Halifax explosion, and all are done so well. From the fictionalized Halifax glass factory where Fred and Clare are employed; the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia where Clare and her fiancé Leo are from; the art studio; to the trenches in France where Leo is a soldier.

Watt pays exquisite attention to detail. She’s a writer and painter and gives art workshops at her studio on Protection Island (Nanaimo), as well as internationally. She was originally a biologist and is the author of The Last Island: A Naturalist’s Sojourn on Triangle Island. Her poetry collection is entitled Circadia.

oel Coward’s Hay Fever “a supreme comedy of bad manners”, opens at the Village Theatre February 15th, 2018.

The polite and restrained manners of English upper class is thrown into mayhem and wicked mischief in ECHO Players' production of Noel Coward’s Hay Fever. Hay Fever is one of Noel Coward's most produced and best loved plays. The production is helmed by professional director, Michael Armstrong, and features a cast of stellar actors from Nanaimo to Courtenay.

Filled by a procession of outrageous characters, this comedy of ill manners is set in 1920s. The Bliss family loves scheming, arguing and the spotlight.

They enjoy high drama, and are everything a respectable family ought not to be – unconventional, uncensored and unapologetic. Judith Bliss (Maureen Cusack) a retired actor and her novelist husband David (Alistair McVey) live in a country house with their son, Simon (Alex Hunter), and socialite daughter, Sorel (Whitley Dunn). Oblivious to the other family members, each of the Blisses invites a guest for the weekend: Sandy Tyrell (Clayton Orlando), Richard Greatham (Steve Hill), Myra Arundel (Heather Haseltine), and Jackie Coryton (Rya Harach). Their guests, suffer varying degrees of confusion as

this unconventional, outwardly blasé family reveals their ill-mannered and egocentric behavior during the mad frolicking weekend. Completing the cast list is housekeeper, Clara (Judy Hipkin).

The skillful handling of the production is in the hands of highly respected director Michael Armstrong. Disparity between the Bliss family and their guests, a key element in this play, is reflected in the posh Bliss country house designed by the director and the costumes, designed by Celia Wesselman and Phillip Clarkson. n Thursday November 30th , the Qualicum Bay Lions Club donated $3,000.00 worth of food to the Salvation Army Oceanside Food Bank . The Qualicum Bay Lions Club raises funds all year long so that a large donation can be made to many charities at this time of the year. Donations are made to school hot lunch programs, therapeutic riding programs, the Food Bank, as well as numerous families who are in need in the area for varied reasons.

The Qualicum Bay Lions raise funds by means of pancake breakfasts, a meat draw every week, concessions at various functions at the Lions Community Park, and by various donations from patrons who use the Lions hall. ~
