The session has finally come to an end. We hope and pray that the new academic year begins peacefully. During the term, apart from academics, our students participated in various co- and extracurricular activities of which some are mentioned below. I would like to thank all the parents for their cooperation and support throughout the year.

Ready for School Parents can help their children get ready for school by exposing them to books, notebooks and

other

stationery

items.

Parents

of

the

students of Steel Town Branch were invited to meet the class teachers and collect book packs of their children on August 7, 2015.

A New Beginning It was the first day of school for Pre-Nursery students on August 11, 2015. Lots of fun-filled activities were planned for them. However, the first two days were full of tears as the children could not let go of their mothers. The colourful classrooms and displays managed to attract their attention and gradually they settled in. We wish them luck and hope they adjust to the new environment soon.

Inter-House Urdu Debate Competition Inter-house Urdu Debate Competition was held on November 4, 2015 for Classes VI to VIII. Topic for Class VI was “Dabon Ka Khana Aur Hamary Sehat” Winners: 1st Emmama Abbas (Tigers), 2nd Hafsa Shabbir (Leopards), 3rd Minahil Zahid (Tigers) Topic for Class VII “NAQAL HAMMARA HAQ HEY” Winners: 1st Syed Ali Mustafain (Leopard),2nd Maryam Aziz (Tigers),3rd Amna Hassan (Jaguars) Topic for Class VIII MAJOODA NASAL KAY BIGAR KA SABAB WALAIDAIN HAIN” Winners: 1st Summaya Javed (Tigers), 2nd Shahek Shabbir (Panthers), 3rd Laiba Javed (Jaguars) Syed Ali Mustafain was declared as the best debater among boys , Summaya Javed was declared as best debater among girls. Winning house: Tigers.!

celebrated

Independence

Day

with

great

fervour and national spirit on August 13, 2015 to show their love and respect for Pakistan. Special assemblies were

organised

for

the

EYs,

Primary

and

Middle/

Secondary schools in small groups. Students wore Independence

Day

bands,

badges

and

caps.

The

well-organised presentations, including songs, role-plays and

speeches,

evoked

a

feeling

of

patriotism

in

everybody present at the event. The teachers also wore green and white for the special occasion.

Orientation Session 2015-2016 for Middle School An orientation session for t h e p a r e n t s o f t h e n e w l y - a d m i t t e d s t u d e n t s o f Middle School was organised on August 31, 2015. The purpose was to familiarize them with the system and procedures of Beaconhouse. Some recent initiatives taken by the school were also shared in the meeting. The meeting was conducted in the library. It was an opportunity for all parents to learn about their child’s routine, academic expectations, upcoming activities and curriculum. In the

end, the parents were given a chance to ask questions.

Annual Graduation Ceremony of Matric 2014-15 The 24th Annual Graduation Ceremony of Matric students of session 2014-15 was held at the Pakistan Steel Officers’ Mess on the pleasant evening of September 2, 2015. The chief guest was Ms Seema Irfan, our School Group Head. The event was attended by parents, enthusiastic students of Classes IX, X and XI and other former students. The alumni who graced the occasion were Dr Ayesha Khan, Ms Anum Tahir and Ms Nadia Shabbir. They shared their experiences, their achievements and gave tips of success to the students.

The Beaconhouse Newsletter - May 2016 Talking Kites Around the World Class III students completed an iEARN project, Talking Kites Around the World during the months of March-April. Students participated in different activities and collaborated with other branches of Beaconhouse in Gulshan and Wah Cantt. They designed and made their own kites and wrote messages on them for a kite and flower festival. This was an integration of English, Math, Science and Urdu for their PBL project and throughout the project they worked enthusiastically on different activities. They had a kite flying activity in which their fathers were invited to support them in flying it. They observed the importance of symmetrical shapes and balance while flying kites. They all enjoyed a lot.

Fun with Fruits Kindergarten students celebrated “Fun with Fruits” activity on January 13, 2016 related to the unit “Extraordinary Nature”. They learnt about the importance of fruits and vegetables for a healthy life. A competition was held between all three sections to make fruit chaat. From each section, three mothers were invited to make fruit chaat with the students’ help.

Sports Gala Sports improve physical health of the students as well as enhance their social and communication skills. BSS Steel Town organised its Annual Sports Gala for Pre-Nursery to Class XII on February 26 and 27, 2016. The shiny medals kept the children focused as they played with their eyes on the prize. The students marched confidently onto the field along with their house captains. They participated in various races and everyone gave it their best. The fathers and mothers also participated as they showed their strength in the Tug of War, Spoon Race and Flat Race.

The Beaconhouse Newsletter - May 2016 Dignity Day Celebrations Global Dignity Day was celebrated at Steel Town Branch from Classes Pre-Nursery to XII during the month of October 2015. Students spoke about global dignity and shared their thoughts in the special assembly. They participated in various activities from October 1 to October 21, 2015 to show respect and regard for their fellow beings all over the world. Children of Aghosh Special School were invited to visit Steel Town Campus to spend some time with Class IV students. A football match was also arranged for them and medals were given to them after the match. Primary and Middle school students performed on different skits based on Principles of Dignity. Classes X and IV interviewed the support staff. A survey was conducted based on bullying by the upper primary students to analyse and control bullying. Kindergarten students made 'thank you' cards and presented them to the support staff. Students participated in different activities in their classes and celebrated the moment with smiles.

Happy 30th Anniversary of Branch Students and staff members of Beaconhouse Steel Town Branch celebrated its 30th birthday on January 28, 2016. A special morning assembly presentation was held. Headmistress Mrs Ghazala Zubair shared the history of Steel Town Branch with the students. An air of excitement surrounded the campus when students and the teachers sang the birthday song and cut the cake. Students participated in various activities in the special assembly such as skits, tableaus, songs etc. Speeches were delivered by two of our former students Mrs Nusrat Jokhio and Ms Nadia Shabeer who are now our staff members.

The Beaconhouse Newsletter - May 2016 Universal Children’s Day Universal Children’s Week was celebrated at Steel Town Branch from November 17, 2015 to November 20, 2015 with great enthusiasm. The Early Years celebrated Colour Day. They selected green, yellow and orange colours and participated in different activities. An art competition was organised for Classes I to V to express their views through art. A morning assembly presentation was held on November 19, 2015 wherein students from Classes Pre-Nursery to V performed tableaus, sang songs and shared their views about children’s rights and responsibilities. Students of Class III presented their finding of the project "Finding Solution to Hunger and Inequality" in a role-play. They shared their reports after conducting surveys and interviews from parents, senior students and support staff members a week earlier. They identified the problems facing the world

related to hunger and unequal distribution of food among people. They also

presented possible solutions to the problems by using posters and cards.

Health and Wellness, for Mommy and Me Health and Wellness for Mommy and Me event was held on March 10, 2016 to March 14, 2016 for Pre-Nursery to Class III. A variety of activities was planned for mothers. Children were engaged in an assortment of activities related to music, art and other subjects with their mothers. Some interesting sessions were held only for mothers such as yoga, brain break activities, sharing and caring and a session with a psychologist. A yoga instructor Mrs Ashraf, mother of Umaima (Kindergarten) and Imadud Din (Class II) conducted Yoga sessions with mothers on all three days. Dr Farida Baber, who is the grandmother of Aahil (Class I-B) and Meher Salman (Class V), conducted a session with mothers on March 11, 2016 regarding children’s behaviour and academics. It was a very effective session. More than 50% (193/374) mothers attended the event. Mothers were very excited and satisfied during all the activities. They appreciated the event and found it informative and useful. They suggested to organize event for fathers also.

The Beaconhouse Newsletter - May 2016 Save Water! Save Life! World Water Day has been observed on March 22nd since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly declared 22nd March as World Day for Water. On the occasion of this day, Steel Town Branch speared the importance of saving water amongst the students from Pre-Nursery to Class VIII on March 22nd, 2016. Classes I to VIII participated in the event. Classes III to V participated in different activities including special assembly, role play, tableau and poster making. Classes I-V wrote pledges. Class VIII students performed a role play in the morning assembly about importance of water. Class V distributed brochures among students and teachers and class VI students distributed badges related to Water Day.

A Day in the Name of Cricket Sports offer health, social and emotional development and boost self-esteem. Cricket is one of most popular sports among students. Test Cricketer Younus Khan, who is father of our students Owais Khan of Class II and Ammara of Kindergarten, visited Steel Town Branch

He

gave

tips

to

students

of

Classes IV-VIII and conducted two sessions in the Learning Centre where he shared his professional life experiences with the students.

Open Day The Open Day was held at Beaconhouse Steel Town Campus on February 13, 2016. It was a

fun-filled and

informative day for parents and children. Different activities were arranged for them such as Arts and Crafts, Puppet Show, Fun Reading, “Show Your Talent” Little Chef, Math Wizard, Science Wizard and much more. Children also had a great time in the IT laboratory and the Library as interesting activities had been organised for them like online storytelling, having fun with digital microscope, using digital camera and scanner etc. It was a memorable experience of “learning through fun”.
