CULTIVATING CARE AND COMMUNITY

Dear Friends,

Have you ever considered yourself to be an emissary?

An emissary is a person sent on a mission to represent another.

Your response to our end-of-year financial support request was inspiring. Your gifts to the Beacon Hill Foundation provide necessary benevolent care assistance ensuring peace of mind to those in need. They also address your interest in improving our community’s efforts in environmental care, provide educational opportunities for the Beacon Hill family, and enable events with top notch artistic presentations for all to enjoy.

You are an emissary.

You certainly share your generous spirit with many, but you chose to share your generosity with your Beacon Hill family. You chose to champion our mission of “Cultivating Care and Community.”

Your community is grateful for YOU. Donors like you, bless the lives of neighbors, care teams and families offering unwavering support for the best life has to offer.

Sometimes your gifts keep on giving. A resident excitedly shared with me an idea given to her by a visiting musical performer that she knew would spark activity and delight in her husband who

lives with dementia. Aren’t you grateful for experiences that pull it all together for you?

Sometimes your involvement represents your interest in future generations. Resident participation in discussion on environmental issues coincides with Beacon Hill’s commitment to developing, implementing, and improving over time a well-considered Sustainability Plan. The Beacon Hill Foundation is underwriting expert guidance for this important initiative.

Sometimes your gifts represent your heartfelt desire to support continuing education. Scholarships made available through the Foundation impact families, care and our community immediately.

Thank you for joining the mission to represent others and for your enduring generosity!

Fairway Champion

The 21st Annual Beacon Hill Golf Classic is just around the corner and the planning team is excited about the partnership-building event set for June 17, 2024 at Thousand Oaks Golf Club. It is always fun to have participation from our residents as players or volunteers. The most valuable insights on golf event planning have been from resident Rosie Zant who has lived at Beacon Hill for six years.

A conversation with Rosie is always a joy because of her sparkling smile, unwavering support, and personal humility. Each year as golf planning begins, Rosie stops by to encourage the team. I asked Rosie to tell me about her own life experiences and fundraising. And what a fun discussion!

After graduating from Aquinas College, Rosie taught in the Catholic School System. One day a friend told her about the needs of someone who had Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and she

was moved by the story. Her husband John suggested that she put together a golf outing to raise money for the MS organization at their golf club. And so, in 1993 she did!

Rosie contacted friends in the media, friends in politics, and any connection who listened that could sponsor, play, volunteer, or publicize. For 14 years she served as director for the Multiple Sclerosis Society golf outings in Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, and Lansing. She directed the raising of over $2.5 million for the charity through the Tee-Off Against MS golf events. We agreed that event planning required a lot of people at that time and A LOT of volunteers!

A breast cancer survivor, Rosie retired from fundraising but felt called out of retirement to direct the Warren Reynolds “Positively Warren” Golf Classic, raising money for the Lacks Cancer Center at St. Mary’s Hospital and the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rosie was inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame for her tireless efforts in raising money for these worthy charities. In addition, that year she received the Aquinas Outstanding Alumni Award. Aquinas bestowed upon Rosie an honorary degree in 2010 for her charitable work. Rosie told me that it was fun every minute. She loved meeting people, building connections, and supporting these important causes. She could not have done it all without the unwavering support from her husband John who was a “saint” and her four children. Rosie’s deep caring heart and interest in others have helped her to connect with the Beacon Hill residential community. We are also grateful to Rosie for her interest in the mission of the Beacon Hill Foundation as a member of the Legacy Society demonstrating her enduring generosity. Now, to determine the best way to raise the money to bring in her beloved “Four Freshman” act!

An Interview with Mary McLoughlin

New Board Trustee

The Beacon Hill Foundation was thrilled to welcome Mary McLoughlin onto our Board of Trustees last fall. In her 30+ year professional career, Mary planned, designed, and managed strategic communication, public relations, and fund development programs for a multitude of West Michigan businesses, including Beacon Hill at Eastgate. An accomplished leader and professional, Mary received many accolades such as being selected as one of the “50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan” by the Grand Rapids Business Journal, an Encore Innovation Fellow 2015 — 2017 through the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, and “Fundraising Professional of the Year” by the Association of Fundraising Professionals West Michigan Chapter 2021. Now, Mary has eased into retirement, spending more time with her husband Marty, her children, and her grandchildren.

A

Family Full of Joy

Mary: I’m married to a wonderful man Marty, and we share two beautiful daughters Emmy and Ellen, and five grandchildren, all under the age of 10! Marty and I host dinner for our daughters, their husbands, and our grandchildren every Sunday. It’s very active, and a little crazy (imagine five littles playing

tag, hide and seek, doing puzzles, and various other activities altogether). Amazingly, they all get along so well and truly love and enjoy being together.

Appreciation for the Mission

Mary: We have been West Michigan residents for 35 years, moving here from the Detroit area for greater proximity to Lake Michigan, skiing, and other outdoor activities. Within a year, I had the opportunity to serve on both the Grand Rapids Art Museum and YWCA of West Michigan Boards (was president of both boards). Through them, I learned about fund development and loved it. From there I was elected to and served in leadership roles on the boards of Michigan Women Forward (previously the Michigan Women’s Foundation), the Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore, Children’s Advocacy Center, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, and, most recently and happily, the Beacon Hill Foundation.

I am so delighted to serve on the Beacon Hill Foundation board. I have immense respect for Jeff Huegli — what Beacon Hill is today is due to his vision of what a lively, interesting, diverse, unique retirement can be — as well as the Beacon Hill governing board who has provided wise counsel and intelligent oversight. Not willing to rest on its laurels, Beacon Hill continually strives for the newest, most innovative ways to enhance and improve the lives of its residents.

“Every time I am at Beacon Hill, I can see how engaged, respectful, and caring the Beacon Hill staff are with the residents. That is the most important quality and I see it consistently. It’s a wonderful thing.”

Congratulations to our most recent Employee Scholarship Recipients

Our donors’ enduring generosity truly makes a difference. Congratulations to the following outstanding employees and scholarship recipients:

Attending Grand Rapids Community College and pursuing an associates degree in Nursing.

Brenda has a certificate in Practical Nursing from Grand Rapids Community College. She currently works as an LPN, Charge Nurse, in the Nursing department. “New and expanded information and learning will allow me to apply better care to my patients in any situation,” says Brenda.

She enjoys creating relationships and says her strength is in building positive relationships with both residents and families. Brenda’s supervisor, Clinical Care Manager Pam Deacon, says “Brenda has perseverance and that when she sets goals, she establishes a plan to achieve them. Her capacity for empathy, her attention to detail, and desire to grow in her expertise make her an exemplary employee.”

Chelsea Detweiler

Attending Central Michigan University and pursuing a bachelors of Science with a focus on Community Development.

Chelsea works as a seasonal gardener at Beacon Hill, and also works part-time at a veterinary hospital. When working in the garden, residents often get a big smile and ask what she’s growing and harvesting.

“I like to think that I make their day better because I love to talk about gardening,” says Chelsea.

Her love of learning and curiosity about the world inspire a motivation to collect knowledge. Her supervisor, and Garden Café Manager, Maggie Thiel says Chelsea has a great attitude and growing leadership skills, and she’s grateful to have her on staff.

We wholeheartedly encourage members of our care and service teams to explore opportunities for further education in fields such as nursing, culinary arts, and other relevant areas. Together, we can shape a brighter future for our community and beyond.

Providing for a Loved One’s Future

GIFTS THAT PAY INCOME

Many supporters further the ministry of the Beacon Hill Foundation through gifts that pay income.

Through a lifetime income gift, you provide meaningful support to this ministry and secure steady lifetime payments for you or your loved ones.

But what if you want to provide for a loved one beyond your own lifetime?

Including a life income gift in your estate plan is a generous and creative way to bless your children, grandchildren or other individuals with special needs.

For example, John wanted to provide additional retirement funds to one of his faithful, long-term employees, Sharon. He included a gift in his will that offers Sharon steady payments until the time of her passing when the remainder will go toward ministry.

Another couple was concerned their children would receive a single large lump sum when they go to be with the Lord. Instead, they set up lifetime income gifts that will provide each of their children 20 years of steady income, after which their favorite ministries will be blessed.

Is a lifetime income gift the right charitable solution for your goals and situation?
