The Household Hero Bug Buster” and all-around Handyman
who is well acquainted with some of the perils of being in nature. A few years ago, he got very sick from the bite of the dangerous Asian Longhorn tick, a new species of tick here in Rhode Island. He determined then to get his pesticide license so he could combat this nasty insect as well as New England’s other unwanted pests ~ fleas, mosquitos, and mostly, spiders.
BY JENNIFER COATES
The door of Jill Brody’s house swings open as Stephen Gustafson steps inside, full of his signature boundless energy and enthusiasm. Gus, as Gustafson is affectionately known, pulled out his pad of paper and stood ready for his first assignments in Brody’s home. Gustafson is an official “handyman” ~ he is, in fact, the one and only “Household Hero”!
Brody asks: Do you fix a leaky faucet? Yes. Replace light fixtures? Yes. Hang curtain rods? Yes. Remove a piece of outdated furniture? Yes. Install baby gates? Yes. Powerwash my brick patio? Yes. Fix a broken door jam? Yes. Assemble a bookcase? Yes! He can even clean area rugs! Yes! Yes to everything
Brody had on her “honeydo” list. The Household Hero had arrived in the shape of a twenty-year carpenter, professional window installer and genuine “Jack-of-allTrades.”
Everyone needs a Household Hero, whether you live alone or not, whether you are young or old, there are ALWAYS those projects around the house that never get done. Sometimes, we just don’t have the skills; sometimes it’s a simple lack of time and/or motivation. The projects languish forever while new ones accumulate. Things break down. Things need to be moved. Things need to be upgraded. Never fear, NO JOB IS TOO SMALL for this Household Hero!
From his earliest years, Gustafson has always had a knack for building, fixing, and making things. Moreover, he is always refining his skills ~ getting extra schooling and training; pushing himself to learn more and to do more, the right way. He will come to you, wherever you are, to tackle your household projects.
The Household Hero is also an avid outdoorsman
Today, Gustafson does more than check things off your to-do list; he can protect your home/property with the use of a completely natural, non-toxic, family-friendly pest control treatment ~ for a one-time job or an ongoing commitment. You decide.
Gus will come to your home and, after a free consultation, will get right to work spraying this cedar-oil based product inside and outside of your house. Unlike its toxic counterparts, NO wait time is necessary following this process. You don’t need to close your windows. It is completely harmless to people, plants, pets, and bugs such as bees and butterflies (it has to do with the way they breathe!)
Gustafson can be your Household Hero. He is bonded and insured as a General Contractor (#GC48448) and licensed as a pesticide specialist. Check out Gus’s website at www. thehouseholdhero999.com or call him today at 401-9992715.

This umbrella stand, which sold for $300 at a Selkirk auction in St. Louis has a light, intricate look. However, its design uses straight lines and simple geometric shapes. Its ball feet create a sturdy look; and, as an umbrella stand, it was made with use in mind.

Q:I found an old electric toaster from the 1920s at a flea market. I am using it as a decoration in my kitchen. What is the history of toasters?
A:Toasting bread with electricity and not over a fire was made possible in 1905, when American metallurgist Albert L. Marsh developed a nickel-chromium alloy he called “Chromel.” It was low in electrical conductivity, infusible and resistant to oxidation, which made it the perfect metal to shape into filament wires and coils for heating elements. In 1908, General Electric patented its own nickel-chromium alloy that contained iron. It was called “calorite.” In 1909, GE introduced its D-12 bread toaster, invented by Frank Shailor, which was a commercial success, 19 years before the invention of bread-slicing machines in 1928. Over the next 100 years, toasters were made of metal, wood, porcelain and Bakelite. The value of a vintage toaster depends on its rarity, aesthetics and the design of its electrical and mechanical works. We are amused by a toaster twice as long as others that toasts the bread by send-
ing it through the long toaster instead of popping up.

The Arts and Crafts movement promoted skilled craftsmanship, quality work and simple, sturdy shapes. Strong, Stylish Spring Home Upgrades
5 renovation projects where brick takes center stage
Family Features
springtime is a perfect opportunity for homeowners to begin planning renovations to enhance the interior and exterior of their living space. Because of its strong performance capabilities, low maintenance and design flexibility, brick is a popular building material choice when looking to improve or refresh your home in time for warm-weather hosting season.
Often selected for its functional benefits, brick is available in a wide array of colors, textures and sizes that can match varying design styles, from modern to traditional and almost everything between. If you’re considering adding brick to your home’s aesthetic, consider these five projects to tackle this spring from the experts at Glen-Gery, one of the largest brick and stone manufacturers in North america.
Basement or patio bar - as homeowners spend more time at home, they often look to maximize livable space. One way to take advantage of unused living space is building a basement or patio bar, which provides an area for entertaining. Using an exposed brick wall can help designate the bar area and separate it from the rest of the basement, or lining a bar counter with brick can create a rustic contrast against the bar’s seating.
Fireplace - To change the look and feel of a room almost instantly, you can use brick to give a fireplace a facelift or make it a focal point of your home. available in a variety of colors and textures, Glen-Gery’s diverse, premium portfolio of more than 600 brick and stone products can elevate your living room’s style in a big way and create a more inviting area to share with family and friends. An outdoor fireplace is another option for extending livable space in a cozy way that can be used throughout the year.
Accent wall - Create a statement in or outside your home with a brick accent wall. Accent walls can help bring color, texture and beauty to homes by breaking up the monotony of monochromatic color or decor, creating visual interest and dimension. While brick in a running bond pattern is expected, you can spice up rooms with an unexpected bond pattern like a stacked bond for modern appeal or herringbone for a rustic look.
Kitchen backsplash - One of the most overlooked areas of kitchen design is the backsplash. While its job is to protect your kitchen walls from the never-ending assault of kitchen splatters, there’s no reason it can’t look good, too. Brick backsplashes
can accommodate most home designs and styles thanks to the versatility of shapes, colors, finishes and sizes available.
Black or white glazed brick works well with more modern kitchens while irregular brick containing an abundance of texture and a messy mortar application can complete rustic farmhouse kitchens. An option like Glen-Gery’s virtual design tool, Picture Perfect, can help you visualize projects in your home to see what fits your style and needs.
Brick skirt - For added curb appeal, consider adding a brick skirt around the foundation of your home. Given its resilient, durable and energy-efficient qualities, brick can help provide better insulation and protection while also adding visual appeal to the exterior of your home through texture, color and contrast. the skirting can also continue through to the front porch floor and steps, helping balance out the elevation of your home.

Chores to Tackle to Get Your Home Ready for Spring
Family Features
after months spent largely indoors while harsh elements battered your home’s exterior, many homeowners are throwing open the windows and embracing spring’s arrival. Every home requires ongoing maintenance to ensure it’s living up to its aesthetic and functional best. This checklist can help you create a comfortable home setting for enjoying the warmer months.
Check gutters. During the colder months, debris can accumulate in the gutters, which can be problematic when spring rains arrive. Clogged gutters prevent water from flowing efficiently away from the roof and house. When they’re backed up, they can cause water damage in a short amount of time. Faulty guttering can also cause slow leaks that lead to damage you may not discover until major repair work is needed. Properly functioning gutters are clear of debris, flow freely and are securely attached to the home.
Inspect the roof. Your roof takes a real beating in all kinds of weather conditions. Making it a common practice to carefully inspect the roof with the change of seasons can help you identify potential problems while they’re still in early stages, before a big storm hits and major damage occurs. Some roof issues can be addressed with simple repairs you can do yourself while others may require a professional. A roofing expert can help you determine whether any trouble areas can be patched or if a more complete restoration is in order.
Replace the dryer vent. upgrading your dryer vent is an opportunity to conserve energy and prevent flammable lint build-up in your dryers. One option for updating the exhaust system is a paintable version of InoVate’s Prime DryerWallVent. engineered for both vent replacement and new construction, the vent includes features such as a gravity-assist damper, integrated magnets and a drip edge to provide extra protection from the elements as well as pests. a large, clean opening and lightweight angled damper promote exceptional airflow efficiency.
Service air conditioning units. your heating and cooling system works hard to keep your indoor climate comfortable when extreme temperatures make the outdoors unbearable.
that’s why it’s important to have your systems serviced by a professional, and spring is a smart time to do so before they’re hard at work throughout the warmer months. Service can correct problems and ensure everything is operating efficiently, which can lead to money savings as well.
Repair window screens. throughout the winter, your home’s window screens can accumulate a layer of dirt and grime that isn’t just unsightly; it blows indoors when you open the windows to welcome a fresh breeze. What’s more, if your screens have rips and tears, pesky bugs and other critters can make their way into your home more easily. Cleaning and repairing your screens can make your home more secure and help protect your indoor air quality.

In today’s collectible toy scene, Star Wars is by far the largest collecting community in my opinion. The love for the force is multigenerational and worldwide, especially since Disney acquired the brand in 2012 and accelerating its growth with multiple movies, series, cartoons, and immersive theme parks in California and Florida. It is incredible to think how far Star Wars has come since “A New Hope” premiered in theaters fortysix years ago.
The film was released in 1977, but the merchandise was not available in stores until 1978. When Star Wars action figures first hit shelves, there were only twelve characters offered. These included: Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, a Jawa, a Storm Trooper, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Death Star Commander, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Sand People. In today’s market, they are some of the most valuable Star Wars figures in factory sealed condition.
To entice kids to collect every action figure, each
By Travis Landry Auctioneer & Specialist Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers Cranston, RI
carded Star Wars action figure displayed all the available characters on the back of the card. Hence the collector terminology of “12 back,” (starting in 1978), all the way up to a “92 back” in 1984-85 with “The Power
of the Force” toy line. Just like with all collectibles, condition is the most important with Star Wars and factory sealed is always best. There is value in loose figures too, but who kept their toys sealed? Odds are even if you told a child their toy would be worth big bucks someday if they never opened it, they would’ve torn into it anyways – the toys were just too fun to ignore, and that’s why near-mint factory sealed “12 backs” sell for thousands of dollars today when professionally graded!
If you have nothing to do on Saturday, May 6th stop by and visit Bruneau & Co. in Cranston. We are hosting a cataloged auction focused on professionally graded comic books, video games, and toys – including a large collection of Star Wars action figures, and even some CAS 85 graded 12 and 20 backs! It might blow your mind to watch what was once child’s play hammer for serious money today.

Remembering Andy
on the Eve of what would have been his 58th Birthday
Andy had a unique sense of honor, an amazing ability for recalling names, dates, and trivia. A great interest in history, especially of the wars fought by our country. Andy enjoyed Rock music, especially the band Rush, e ree Stooges comedy, quiet moments freshwater shing, holiday and family gatherings and time spent at “ e Lake”.
For his family and life-long friend Eric, he had a quiet, unspoken love. For his nieces and nephews, an open and embracing love. For his son, who he always said, “he’s the best thing that ever happened to me”, a deep and enduring love.
When
the final darkness came you were not alone, Blessed Mother was by your side, took your hand and led you Home.
When you think of and remember Andy, smile… he would have liked that. RIP

Thanksgiving Novena to ST. JUDE
O Holy St. Jude Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ. Faithful intercessor of all who invoke this special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and three Glory Be’s. Publication must be promised. St Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. It helped me. Thank you St. Jude for answering my prayers. RSTP

1. The Grass Roots, in 1966. It was released on the group’s debut album of the same name. The song had been written for Herman’s Hermits, who never released it, in favor of recording a different song.
2. Mr. Bojangles was a homeless street performer Walker met in jail. Bojangles had taken his name from another street performer born in 1878.
3. “Hazy Shade of Winter.” The song was written and originally released by Simon & Garfunkel in 1966.
