Victoria Hall on the move again In a rationalisation of property, the site of the Rosebank Peninsula Church has been sold for intensive housing.

Siteworks saw the felling of the mature trees and the removal of Victoria Hall. The building will be repurposed as part of the Communities Feeding Communities initiative on the former St Giles Church land in Roskill South.

The hall, including 12 seats, was purchased for £40 in 1897 through the contributions of around 90 Rosebank residents, keen to have a local venue for social as well as religious activity.

According to The Challenge of the Whau (Ron Oates, Avondale History Group, 1994), the Victoria Hall was originally sited in Eden Terrace in Auckland Central and used as a Jewish synagogue. The church was hauled out by a team of horses to the corner of Orchard Street and Rosebank Road.

However, this is disputed as it is difficult to find evidence that this building was in fact a synagogue.

Led by Quakers, the vision for the interdenominational use of the church came into reality. Over the decades, users

included the Salvation Army, Seventh Day Adventists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Catholics, Anglicans, and eventually a Union Parish Samoan congregation.

The venue was also used by other groups such as the Band of Hope, Avondale Road Board, Emergency Precaution Scheme (for World War II civil defence), Cadets, Life Boys, Avondale Kindergarten, Rosebank Plunket Group, Rosebank Play Centre, Avondale Citizens Advice Bureau Drop-in Centre, and for elections.

Now, Victoria Hall has been transported to Roskill South for the next phase of its life in a different community. There, the suburb has been rebuilt with hundreds of new homes as Kāinga Ora intensifies housing, replacing stock from the 1950s and 60s. To support the community initiative, the hall will be remodelled to accommodate a meeting space, a foodbank with a commercial kitchen, offices, and bathrooms.

Presbyterian Support Northern Community Relationship manager Anne Overton says moving Victoria Hall is a huge milestone for the initiative. “This grand old dame of a building has a lovely spirit and stood to be demolished before we claimed her. It’s going to be wonderful to see her brought back to life and be at the heart of what we want to do here.”

hopes that the hall will help create a new community of faith. “It is exciting that the hall will be at the heart of the Roskill South community. For me, it is about building a sense of ownership for the people and that they will in the long term see this as their spiritual home for Roskill South.”

There will be fruit trees, urban gardens, and allotments for those living in apartments or homes without access to the space needed to grow fresh food.

The site will also have a small basketball court, an interactive, sensory children’s play area, and a picnic area with a pizza oven for people to spend time and connect. “We realised that new pathways needed to be created that led to food security for these families and a more empowering way found for communities to access food with dignity, that was also more sustainable,” says Anne Overton.

Local butcher helps feed families Last month Aussie Butcher New Lynn’s Reuben Sharples dropped in on the Kindness Collective with a gift of topquality mince from Pure South New Zealand – enough to feed 120 families!

The Kindness Collective is a New Zealand charity that spreads kindness by connecting children and families with the things they need.

The Collective works with numerous schools, early childhood education centres, social services, community groups, public service agencies and other charities by meeting needs in the community with resources, tools, time, and money. They are essentially a match-making service, matching those in need with those who have more to share.

The meat is halal certified so went straight to Kāhui Tū Kaha’s refugee families and MDM Women’s Refuge safe houses. As sad as it is to say, meat is a real treat for families living with food insecurity, so Reuben’s gift was very much appreciated.

More cost of living support for New Zealanders Our Government has taken the next step to support New Zealanders with the cost of living. To fight inflation and ease the pressure, we’ve extended the fuel tax cut, reduced road user charges, and kept half price public transport in place for everyone until the end of January 2023.

These extensions are one way we can make life more affordable for people and provide more certainty in the face of volatile prices at the petrol pump.

This will also help reduce the fuel burden on businesses and keep the cost of food and essential goods lower across the board.

The first of our new cost of living payments will go out soon, supporting more than two million New Zealanders.

This sits alongside our Winter Energy Payment. When taken together, these payments will support 81% of New Zealanders aged 18 and over with their bills this year.

We’re also fixing the supermarket sector and increasing competition to make sure that Kiwis pay a fair price at the checkout. This includes calling on supermarkets to open up wholesale access for their competitors at a fair price – or we will do it for them through law. This will make it easier for new competitors to enter the grocery market and ensure fairer prices.

The minimum wage has been raised again, with this year’s increase worth more than $2,500 a year for full-time workers. Alongside this, we’ve boosted Superannuation and Working for Families, as well as rolling out cheaper doctors’ visits, free school lunches and more.

These measures build on the work we’ve done since taking office to make life more affordable for New Zealanders, as we move forward with our plan to grow a secure economy for all.

Global pressures mean there’s no easy fix, but our Government will continue to provide support in the face of inflation to help families and businesses here in the New Lynn Electorate, and across the country to get ahead.

Connection, competition, and caring at seniors event Seniors from all over the Whau came together at the New Lynn Community Centre in mid-July to experience a range of fun activities and helpful services.

Organised by Sara Mihaere from Green Bay Community House and RJ from Glenavon Hub, the event aimed to provide seniors with a day of fun and connection, and a chance to discover some of the activities and services that are available to them in the Whau.

The event, which was funded by the Whau Local Board, saw over 75 seniors enjoy a delicious, boxed morning tea from The Wardoom café, and engage in some competitive fun with bingo and bowls.

Blockhouse Bay Community Centre, Rebus Club, and Grey Power also came along to connect with the attendees, offering free health checks and sharing information about how they can access their services in the community.

Why students choose Lynfield College I CAME TO LYNFIELD because I heard terrific things about it. When I got there I was presented with all the different paths you could take in Year 9, academic-wise.

There is a big change from intermediate because there are a lot more chances to improve your learning.

MY FIRST DAY AT LYNFIELD College was a bit confusing because I missed the ‘Open Day’ but I adjusted amazingly well all the same. The Peer Support students and Teachers were really helpful with their great communication and guidance.

I found it fun to check my timetable and go to the different classes throughout the day compared to intermediate where you are in the same class all day.

It allows you to meet way more people, and make more friends.

I was surprised by how many curriculum subjects there were and so many I wanted to choose. There were opportunities like sports clubs, multicultural groups, robotics, tech subjects and many more.

I also chose Lynfield because when I went to the Open Day, I was blown away by the number of sports, different academic paths, and the wide variety of culture-based learning. All the teachers are fun and easy to talk to. Lynfield is a very nice, and welcoming place. I felt right at home as soon as I got here.

WHEN I FIRST CAME to Lynfield, I knew of only five other people from my school, which made the first day quite intimidating, but the school’s welcoming nature with both teachers and my own peers made it really easy to settle in and feel at home.

The wide range of extra-curriculars offered is something I’ve particularly enjoyed, and have had the opportunity to try out a variety of sports and join cultural groups I’d never have thought to join and experience otherwise. One of my favourite things about Lynfield is also how it’s helped me develop a passion for the subjects I’m interested in, with so many opportunities given both in and out of class to participate in competitions and events for them, which I’ve loved being a part of. It’s been an amazing past five years with the highlights definitely being the people I’ve met and the memories I’ve been able to make here!

Outstanding academic results for Avondale College students Avondale College students consistently gain some of the highest marks in New Zealand and the world in NZQA and Cambridge International examinations, and the results from 2021 were once again cause for celebration.

In the Cambridge International examinations, two students came Top in the World, with nine achieving the best marks in New Zealand! Justin Yang (Year 11) came first in the world in the IGCSE English exam, with a raw mark of 99%; and Seivin Kim topped the world in the IGCSE Mathematics exam, gaining 100% - while only in Year 10!

However, it wasn’t only the students taking the Cambridge qualification pathway who did well - Avondale College’s NCEA results were once again well above national averages, with an increase to 93% NCEA achievement for Years 11-13 students. This was particularly pleasing given there was an overall drop in NCEA achievement nationally for 2021.

have been for the past five years, and the number of students who gained more than 14 credits in their courses was higher in 2021 than it has been in the previous three years.

The NZ Scholarship exams are regarded as the most challenging assessment available to secondary students, and in 2021, 32 NZ Scholarships in 13 different subjects were awarded to Avondale College students.

Support varies from local boards on intensification

By Laura Kvigstad, Auckland Council reporter, Funded by New Zealand on Air At the Planning Committee meeting on 30 June, several local board views were expressed on how Auckland Council is enabling intensification under the National Policy Statement on Urban Development (NPS-UD) and Medium Density Residential Standards.

Council went down this path they would never be able to retain certain areas again. “I have had elderly homeowners in tears, who are deeply concerned about the lack of information, the rushed process and the uncertainty of the special character homes,” said Grant.

While some local boards expressed strong support for maintaining Special Character Areas (SCAs) others said that by maintaining SCAs, further intensification would be pushed into underdeveloped areas.

Henderson Massey local board member Brooke Loader called for fairness in the distribution of intensification across the city. “Already we are bursting at the seams here with development - our area has been subject to a lot of intensification,” Loader said.

“Consultation was not proportionate to the population of our local board, and amongst lower-income people there was a lack of awareness about the new rules. Our constituents are coming to us with a range of complaints about infrastructure such as transport, leaks from the pipes, electricity issues, and internet connectivity issues.”

Loader said her board wanted to see environmental protection through an overlay for areas in Henderson

Takapuna Devonport Local Board chair Ruth Jackson said her board wanted to see Auckland Council pursue a legal challenge against government. “The NPS-UD is a one size fits all approach which we do not believe can work,” Jackson said. “It focuses on quantity at the expense of quality, community, and social outcomes. Once the damage is done, it cannot be undone.”

Whau Local Board member Kay Thomas said there was support in her area for intensification. “Many people in the Whau have learned to live with intensification. These suburbs are often well off in terms of community assets, while the Whau area has few assets because of its position in regard to legacy councils.”

By retaining or extending SCAs, Thomas said intensification would continue to be centred on Auckland’s most deprived areas. “If deprived areas continue to experience a disproportionate share of intensification, we ask that council carefully considers how future assets can be allocated to address such inequality.”

Council must publicly notify changes to the Unitary Plan before August 20.

There are times for the familiar and inviting flavours and aromas that we know so well – and then there are times for the daring, new and inviting new flavours that will become like old friends. This time of year calls for warming and curious palate awakeners, as well as liqueurs that lend themselves to cocktails or sippers by the fire.

Botanical rum is a category of intrigue and delight, whether you’re a gin lover looking for something slightly different or a rum lover curious enough to explore with imagination. When the lure of something rich, complex, and slightly sweet is calling to you in the evening hours, the lushness of a coffee liqueur is delicious in cocktails or to be sipped slowly.

This edition, we’re exploring two New Zealand made products that are pushing palates forward into delicious futures – showcasing exploration, innovation, and dedication.

THE GRAY MAN Movie Review #3875 ‘Nother ripping yarn for testosteroneaddled teen males and 30-year-old little boys, this time it’s a CIA operative betrayed and targeted for termination by a rogue handler trying to recover his dirt.

The usual surnames come to mind for these sorts of roles - Pratt, Pine, Hemsworth, Reynolds etc - but this time its Ryan Gosling in the hot seat with Chris Evans as resident bad guy.

It’s a 2 hour parade of shoot ups, blow ups, carve ups, smash ups, mash ups and whatever else ups, as Mr Gos stays one step ahead of the nasties, eventually delivering the usual come-uppance to the main bad dude.

Along the way we spot Billy Bob Thornton who shines as the old stalwart along with the occasional face I recognise but would have no idea who they are.

Most of the premise has been done before in many different guises but at the end of the day it’s a surprisingly OK outing for all its boom-a-minute moments and probably does just enough to justify a sequel if I was to take a guess.

500 homes for Avondale’s 3 Guys site Eke Panuku Development Auckland has signed a sale and development agreement for a 1.58-hectare development block in Avondale town centre to Marutūāhu-Ockham Group, marking a significant milestone for the regeneration of this vibrant city fringe neighbourhood.

With easy access to transport links, the development of this central site is destined to offer more than 500 homes directly adjoining the future site of Auckland Council’s eagerly anticipated multimillion-dollar investment in a new town square, multi-purpose library and community facility, as well as provide new retail and commercial premises along the site’s Great North Road edge.

As the city’s urban regeneration agency, Eke Panuku is tasked to lead the regeneration of Avondale enabling homes, community spaces and better transport connections.

The 1.58-hectare development block comprises two large sites at 6 and 10 Racecourse Parade which Eke Panuku has sold together.

The first, known locally as ‘the 3 Guys site’ has been bare for many years. Following recent negotiations to purchase the adjacent site at 10 Racecourse Parade from Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities, Eke Panuku has been able to take both to the market as one larger site allowing for a significant development opportunity.

These sites are part of a programme of residential development in central Avondale which has been supported through strategic land acquisition. We have been able to assemble a site of scale that can deliver well designed homes and commercial spaces right in the centre of Avondale.”
