Public invited to tour the local lights Next event set for July 21 After nine years, the Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation successfully had back-to-back tours on June 16.

The weather was picture-perfect with sunny skies and light winds were ideal for a visit to the lighthouses.

Both tours were sold out. The tour patrons were picked up by the Delaware Launch Service at the Cape May/Lewes Ferry Terminal and did a sail by Delaware Breakwater East End Light for pictures. Then they proceeded to the Harbor of Refuge for a one-hour guided tour of the lighthouse.

The lighthouse enthusiasts were treated to the sight of dolphins and skin divers along the breakwater wall. They were allowed to climb the light and get the best view of Lewes from the top deck.

Foundation organizers were thrilled to make the tours accessible to the general public after such a long delay because of the dock issues that have plagued the project since 2002. The new dock that was constructed in 2016 made restoration work,

parties and tours possible again.

Tours are set for 3 and 4 p.m., Saturday, July 21; 1 and 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18; 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8; and 9 and 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22. For more information or to register, go to delawarebaylights.org.

The foundation is an allvolunteer 501(c)(3) organization that depends on its volunteers and donors for preservation and restoration. Volunteers educate the public on the Delaware Bay lighthouses, with prime focus on the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse.

Bring on July 4 fun for 2018 Delaware’s coastal towns love their country and there are lots of events to prove it There is an abundance of Independence Day celebrations along Delaware’s coastline.

Bethany Beach Bethany Beach begins its July 4 celebration at noon, Wednesday, July 4, with a parade that begins at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Garfield Parkway. There are 12 bands expected to participate and parade floats can be entered into the parade from 9 – 11:30 a.m., near the Christian Church grounds, 7 N. Pennsylvania Ave. There will be an awards ceremony at 7:15 p.m., followed by a performance from local rockers Love Seed Mama Jump.

The day ends with fireworks at dusk. For more information go to townofbethanybeach.com.

Dewey Beach In Dewey, as usual, a fireworks display will be hosted by Highway One. The fireworks will be set off Wednesday, July 4, from a barge in the Rehoboth Bay and are visible from any bar or restaurant along the bayside in Dewey.

Henlopen Acres Henlopen Acres will have

its 4th annual Independence Day Parade, beginning at 9 a.m.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the marina. Participants are invited to decorate bikes, wagons, scooters, strollers, floats, pets, homes and yards. Judging, Prizes and Refreshments to follow at the Marina.

The parade route begins at the marina on Tidewaters Road going toward the beach. It takes a right on Zwaanendael Road, a right on Rolling Road, a right on Dodds Lane and concluding back at the marina.There will be judging, prizes and refreshments following the parade at the marina.

Pets that enjoy crowds, excitement and small children are welcome to participate, but must be leashed and owners are responsible for their behavior.

A rain date has been scheduled for 9 a.m., Thursday, July 5. For more information or to volunteer, call town hall at 302227-6411.

Lewes Lewes will celebrate July 4 with something old – oldfashioned games for children on second street, the Doo-Dah Parade and the Independence

Day Lewes Boat Parade – and something new – the city’s inaugural Go Fourth fireworks display.

The old-fashioned games for children begins at 9 a.m. on Second Street, which will be closed while games are in progress.

Following the games, the Lewes Independence Day Boat Parade will wind its way down the Lewes – Rehoboth Canal from Roosevelt Inlet to Fisherman’s Wharf.

The parade entrants will leave from the inlet at 1:30 p.m., passing in front of the judges’ reviewing stand at approximately 2 p.m. Lewes Mayor Ted Becker will announce the parade in the area of Fisherman’s Wharf.

All pre-registered boat entrants will be eligible for prizes that include a unique handcarved figurine by local carver Bert Long, a member of the organizing committee.

The Doo-Dah Parade forms in the vicinity of Lloyd’s Market on Savannah Road. No preregistration is required and everyone is invited to participate.

The parade is expected to begin around 5 p.m., but is always unpredictable.

Finally, in Lewes, the day caps off with the inaugural fireworks display. The best visibility is from Roosevelt Inlet to the Continued on page 5

Millsboro Millsboro will have a few different July 4-themed events.

The Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce will host the 2nd annual Stars & Stripes Fireworks Celebration Saturday, June 30, at Cupola Park in downtown Millsboro. Festivities for the free event begin at 6 p.m. with food trucks, music and loads other fun, with the fireworks show at approximately 9 p.m. A rain date has been set for Sunday, July 1.

The Clubhouse at Baywood, a restaurant and event venue in Millsboro, will hold an Independence Day Party from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, July 1.

The Baywood event has no admission fee and will be held on the paver patio area overlooking immaculately maintained gardens. It will feature a cash bar and a bevy of barbecue.

Menu items also will include hot dogs and hamburgers.

The Cruzers will perform from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The band plays dance music from the ‘50s through the ‘80s. Fireworks will close the evening.

The final event in Millsboro is the 12th annual Children’s Celebration, scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 4, at the labyrinth of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, at the corner of State and Ellis streets. There will be a children’s activity table. Hot dogs, chips, desserts and beverages will be provided. In case of rain, the celebration and parade will be held in St. Mark’s Parish Hall. Milton Milton will play host to the annual Bring Mayberry Back to Milton event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 4, in Milton Memorial Park.

There will be old fashioned fun for all ages, including a dunk tank, pie baking contest, train rides, relay and sack races, chess matches and more fun for children. There will be a bike decorating contest and bike parade at 11:00 a.m. sponsored by Irish Eyes Pub and Restaurant.

Grand prizes of two brand new bikes will be awarded to the winners – one each to the best boy and girl entries. All decorated bike contestants must register by 10:45 a.m. at the park gazebo.

The “Milton’s Best” Pie Baking Contest has three competitive categories – professional, amateur, and children 12 and under. Bring your favorite Red, White or Blue themed pie to the Hospitality Tent between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. on July 4th. All pies must be made from scratch, prepared in a 9-inch disposable pie pan with a cover, and not require refrigeration. Prizes and certificates will be awarded to the winners.

Musical entertainment at the

Rehoboth Beach Rehoboth Beach will celebrate Independence Day with its annual fireworks display at approximately 9:15 p.m., Sunday, July 1. Depending on the weather, the fireworks may launch any time after 8 p.m.

The Funsters will be performing at the Bandstand from 8 – 9:15 p.m., and then again after

the fireworks until 11 p.m.

A press release from the city June 18 strongly recommends the use of the Delaware Department of Transportation’s DART Park & Ride to travel into downtown. For more information go to dartfirststate.com or call 302-226-2001.

In town parking options include the Deauville Beach parking lot for $5, beginning at 5 p.m.

Metered and non-metered fee permit parking spaces throughout town.

The Jolly Trolley will be operating the daily Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach shuttle services, in full schedule, from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. During and after the fireworks, in Rehoboth Beach, the Convention Center

The Rehoboth Beach Bandstand will be closed to vehicle traffic from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Vehicles will not be able to cross Rehoboth Avenue at the Circle beginning at 7 p.m.

Rehoboth Avenue eastbound and Church Street from Route 1 will be closed to vehicle traffic beginning at 8:30 p.m. All vehicles will have to enter through State Road or Bayard Avenue.

All traffic north of Rehoboth Avenue should exit Rehoboth Beach using Columbia and Rehoboth avenues.

Doll Clothes Cottage now open in Lewes Offers handmade clothes, accessories

By Ellen Driscoll ellen@capegazette.com After sewing thousands of doll dresses for 20 years, Monica Weber still finds joy in her work.

“It’s a delightful business to be in,” she said. “No one is ever in a bad mood buying doll clothes.”

It’s a business the Brookfield, Conn., native grew into gradually.

“A friend of mine adopted an older girl, and some of us chipped in to buy her an American Girl doll, which I had never even heard of,” she said. “And I thought, ‘I sew, maybe I’ll make her a couple outfits.’”

Another friend who saw the outfits asked her to sew a complete wardrobe of doll clothing as a gift.

From there, Weber began sewing and selling custom outfits at local craft shows and fairs, and “NO ONE IS EVER then operated her IN A BAD MOOD own doll BUYING DOLL clothing store in CLOTHES.” Connecti- MONICA WEBER cut for five years.

A retired accountant, Weber and her husband vacationed in Lewes after a friend’s recommendation. They loved the area so much, they moved to Lewes Beach in March. She opened Doll Clothes Cottage on a parttime basis Memorial Day Weekend, and now runs the store six days a week.

Weber sews clothes designed to fit American Girl, Bitty Baby, Wellie Wisher and other large dolls. Each dress can take two hours to design, sew and embellish with lace trim or other decorations.

“I make up patterns by paying attention to what kids like and trends in kids’ clothing, and try to match them,” she said. “My customers give me great ideas, too. Kids are very tactile and like to touch the materials, so I must have the right texture and quality. They have to be sturdy enough to last.”

Weber says Halloween clothes are best-sellers, and she offers a line of boy doll clothes as well.

The store also offers doll toys such as beach chairs and tea sets, and accessories like shoes and umbrellas.

“I love when kids and their parents come in and talk about their favorite dolls,” she said.

“It’s a joy to see what has brought joy to someone for so many years.”

across from the entrance to Henlopen Gardens in Lewes.

Explore world of marine science at free UD tours Visits offer glimpse into research at Hugh R. Sharp Campus

After sitting in summer traffic for however many hours and lathering up in what feels like 10 layers of sticky sunscreen, the reward of digging our feet in the hot sand and gazing upon the vast blue ocean is worth every painstaking minute it takes to get there.

Many of us have fond memories by the sea. Whether it's the familiar scent of salt air, the soothing sound of waves crashing on the shore or the enchanting folklore of mermaids, the ocean means something to us.

Regardless if you grew up in the middle of the country or near the beach, the ocean connects us all. The ocean covers 71

percent of the planet, is the largest source of oxygen and functions as a major food source.

Humans and animals alike need water to survive.

At the University of Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp Campus, visitors ages 10 and older can immerse themselves in the fascinating world of marine science at with a free tour of UD's state-of-the-art ocean laboratories.

Tours are designed to engage and educate visitors about the importance and current state of the ocean, and about research activities at the college.

Tours are guided by docents guides that are required to undergo a year's worth of training about the college's research before giving their first independent tour.

Lead docent Norma Morrison has been giving tours at the University's College of Earth, Ocean and Environment for 8 years.

Morrison is well-equipped with a larger binder in hand, filled to the brim with up-todate facts about researchers.

"Science is always changing, so as docents we have to commit to studying to be current on these topics," said Morrison.

Visitors learn about the groundbreaking research that the college is doing. For example, tour goers have the chance to visit the Halophyte Solutions Laboratory. There they can learn about a study on halophytes, plants that grow in wet, salty conditions by marine botanists Jack Gallagher and Denise Seliskar. Specifically, research-

ers are studying seashore mallow, a native pink flower marsh plant that is a salt-tolerant crop.

Rehoboth store sells healthy dog treats, pet ice cream All Dried Out, Salty Paws open in Village By the Sea

“People are really excited,” Tretowicz said June 19. “This is basically health food for dogs.”

Headquartered in Pennsylvania, Tretowicz said she opened the first All Dried Out two years ago after spending years selling her treats at dog shows. She said she also sells the treats online, which allows for better prices at her brick and mortar stores because of bulk. All Dried Out also has a fully stocked bully stick bar, dog grooming supplies, toys and other treats.

After purchasing a healthy option for their dogs, owners may treat their furry fourlegged friend to ice cream next door at Tretowicz’s second new business, Salty Paws, an ice cream bar and bakery for dogs.

She said she’s expecting to open this store by Friday, June 22.

“The ice cream is going to be an attraction,” she said. “It’s going to be so cool.”

Tretowicz said the ice cream shop will have all the prepackaged ice cream and yogurt available on the market, plus eight scoopable flavors. She said

the humans will be able to add toppings – sweet potato chunks, crushed chicken, tripe – to the scooped ice cream.

“It’s like meat jimmies for dogs,” she said.

She said she and partner Brian Smith opened the shop in Rehoboth because they have been coming to the vacation resort for many years.

“We knew this was where we wanted to be,” she said. “We’re going to be here anyway.”

Tretowicz said she’s planning on having a grand opening celebration for both stores around July 4.

Store hours for All Dried Out and Salty Paws are 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., seven days a week.

“We’re always open,” said Tretowicz, adding both stores will be open year-round. “Once the dogs are allowed back on the beach, we’ll be able to attract them.”

Dewey Vacation Rentals launches key holder services

By Ellen Driscoll ellen@capegazette.com Dewey Vacation Rentals has launched a new program to help out-of-town homeowners manage their rental properties.

To receive a residential rental license, Dewey Beach property owners must assign a local contact to be available in case of problems or emergency.

While many property owners live nearby, those who live elsewhere can find it difficult to quickly respond to calls, leading Dewey Vacation Rentals owner Harry Wilson to offer Key Holder Services.

“We’re right here in town 24/7 to take care of any and all needs our neighbors in Dewey aren’t physically around all the time to address, including complaints or other incidents,” Wilson said.

“This is just another way of offering what we’re good at so our neighbors can leave the daily grind of renting to us. We’re here so they don’t have to be.”

Property owners do not have to list their rentals with Dewey Vacation Rentals to purchase the service. For a monthly fee, Dewey Vacation Rentals will act as the local contact, inspect properties after cleaning to ensure they are check-in ready, greet renters with the key and

inspect the property after renters check out.

Wilson said homeowners who list properties online at marketplaces such as AirBnb, VRBO and Home Away must also provide renters with certain amenities, such as fresh linens, a burdensome requirement to fulfill from out-of-state.

“There’s clearly a need for this in our area, and it really makes it easy for homeowners,” Wilson said. “A lot of times, we can save the homeowner money by using common sense to figure out solutions to problems that a typical homeowner could fix without having to call a plumber or electrician for service.”

Wilson said the service can help homeowners get high ratings on most sites, leading to increased bookings and better placement in online search engines.

“We provide a personal touch and let renters know there’s someone close by if they need help, and it’s good for homeowners to know someone is here keeping an eye on their properties,” he said. “We want each and every family to have a great experience in Dewey and come back again next year.”

hen Mr. Spock flipphoned Captain Kirk that there was “no intelligent life down here,” some might have taken that as a commentary on non-Rehoboth restaurants. But what if Scotty beams you down west of the beach, and you require nourishment? Who y’gonna call?

There is intelligent (dining) life west of Rehoboth Beach.

Baywood Greens’ head chef Tom Deptula tells me that many people don’t know that

According to Morrison, one of the best parts about being a docent is getting kids to engage and ask questions because of how genuinely interested they are.

Parents are also pleasantly surprised when they, too, are able to answer questions, "The tour starts to tie together, [they] realize that they remember more science than they thought they originally knew." she said.

Morrison hopes that people continue to spread the word about the tour.

"People have heard of us but they don't realize that there's a world class oceanographics school right down the street from them. What happens is they get the opportunity to participate in a couple of hours and get immersed in coral reef studies, learn about what's going on around the world and seeing the research ships and equipment. They're stunned and it's exciting."

Kayak eco-tours offered at Delaware Seashore State Park While the bulk of park visitors enjoy the beaches of Delaware Seashore State Park, few take the time to experience the peace and wildlife of the bayside.

The best way to explore the bayside of the park is by kayak.

Guided kayak eco-tours are offered all summer long.

At 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, IN ADDITION, THE TOUR ALLOWS FOR A UNIQUE VIEW OF THE HISTORIC INDIAN RIVER LIFE-SAVING STATION, SO, NOT ONLY WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN ABOUT LOCAL WILDLIFE, THEY WILL ALSO GET A TASTE OF LOCAL MARITIME HISTORY.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings, park staff will lead a 2.5-mile tour through the salt marsh islands of an area of Rehoboth Bay called Station Cove.

This journey takes participants through small marsh creeks to get an up-close view of a variety of nesting birds such as tricolored herons, snowy egrets, osprey, common terns and laughing gulls.

Along the way, diamondback terrapins, horseshoe crabs and blue crabs are frequent sightings. In addition, the tour allows for a unique view of the historic Indian River Life-Saving Station, so, not only will participants learn about local wildlife, they will also get a taste of local maritime history.

The fee is $35 per person. Not only is the state park tour a bar-

gain, but it is the only eco-tour in Delaware to witness these species of birds in their nesting colonies.

At 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, a beginner’s kayak tour will take place. Introduction to Kayaking is geared towards those who are a bit hesitant to try to the full 2.5-mile tour. It will include thorough paddling instruction, and on-the-water lesson and a bit of wildlife viewing. The fee for this beginner’s kayak trip is $35 per person.

For a full day of activities, adults 21 and up are invited to participate in Day Camp for Big Kids from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 13, Aug. 3 and Aug. 7. This full day includes a kayak eco-tour, lunch at Hammerheads Dockside, a tour of the Center for the Inland Bays, a guided bridge

walk and a voucher to be spent at the Big Chill Beach Club. The fee is $90 per person.

Tickets on sale for Cottage Tour of Art Annual event set in Rehoboth July 10-11 The Rehoboth Art League will hold the 69th Annual Cottage Tour of Art from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, July 10, and Wednesday, July 11.

The Cottage Tour Committee has worked for several months to present this year’s selection of eight homes in the Rehoboth Beach area. Each home on this year’s two-day self-paced tour has distinctive character brought together through landscape, interior and architectural designs.

Some homes have quite a history, and many homeowners showcase memories and collections in unique ways.

The Rehoboth Art League’s Historic Peter Marsh Homestead will be transformed with furnishings and décor by the tour underwriter, J. Conn Scott.

Richard Scott, Lisa Scott and Steve Bendyna will blend modern furnishings and decorations to compliment the historical design and current exhibition throughout the first floor of the Homestead.

In previous years, this has ranged from a white, slipcovered cottage look to a throwback to the 1950s with bright orange. Last year their transformation included a trio of contemporary rooms in whites and blues, complete with a study, a dining room and a sitting room.

Purchase tickets early so not to miss the creativity showcased at each home.

Celebrate Christmas in July in Lewes July 3 If people think that Christmas should be celebrated in the warmer weather, then come to Lewes Tuesday, July 3, and help kick-off the season of giving and togetherness early this year.

Lewes Dairy is hosting its annual Christmas in July promotion to help collect gifts for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots.

Summer is time for bourbon cocktails at Bethany Blues Nothing is better than cooling off with a refreshing cold beverage after a hot day in the summer sun. For many, summer cocktails are a staple for happy hours and to accompany their meals, especially when dining out. Rory Baldini, general manager at Bethany Blues’ Bethany Beach location, is excited about bringing whiskey, and especially bourbon, to the forefront with some amazing summer cocktails.

Baldini and his staff at Blues often travel to test whiskey batches for single barrels. This year, one of their trips took them just over the Bay Bridge to Baltimore where they toured and tasted at the Sagamore Spirits Company, testing its rye whiskey. “We are all about relationship building, and a community atmosphere, so when we went to the Sagamore facility, we brought everyone along, which included kitchen staff,” said Baldini. He said a real breakthrough came when his head chef tasted the white rye whiskey and quickly exclaimed that it tastes like tequila.

Smoke and Sand is a play on the traditional “blood and sand” drink. This cocktail features Blues’ single barrel pick of Sagamore Rye whiskey with lemon juice, simple syrup, luxardo cherry liqueur and sweet vermouth. The cast of flavors

Lewes Canalfront Park concerts to start July 5 The free Concerts by the Canal series kicks off its seventh season with local favorite the Clifford Keith Band at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 5, in Lewes Canalfront Park.

St. Peter’s to host 52nd Annual Art Show July 7 St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes will host its 52nd Annual Art Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 7, on St. Peter’s Square at Second and Market streets and the nearby M&T Bank parking lot. Admission is free, and the show takes place rain or shine.

Sun Otter Tours showcase local family farms

By Phillip Moore phillip@capegazette.com Sun Otter Tours LLC shares excitement and passion for the local landscape with clients on its Coastal Farms Tour, which highlights the rich biodiversity and proud heritage of familyowned farms in Southern Delaware.

Members of the tour were treated to a beautiful day soaked in sunshine during their visits to Goat Joy Farm in Harbeson, Lavender Fields in Milton and Black Hog Farmstead in Lewes.

They explored the elements that make these farms important to the community as well as different from one another.

Sun Otter Tours owners Jody and Steve Dengler, who are coastal Delaware residents, welcomed guests onto their tour bus, which originally provided transportation for CHEER Center members. It has gone through a complete makeover to display custom graphics and quotes from their mission statement.

The first stop on the tour was Goat Joy, a part of Ritter Family Farms, nestled on roughly 1,000 acres behind St. George’s Chapel in Harbeson. Upon stepping off the bus, guests were guided by owner Laura Ritter toward the stables that house their famous goats. As part of the experience, guests were able to interact with many goats on the premises from babies to adults, and could even watch the process of milking the goats and feed baby goats with a bottle of milk.

This hands-on experience is something that Laura and her

daughter Amanda have truly embraced when creating Goat Yoga and Goat Socials. Amanda, an ardent animal lover and current student at the University of Delaware, was a major influence in combining the joys of interacting with animals and maintaining a healthy mind and spirit to create the Goat Yoga sessions that take place every weekend.

“The benefits of animal therapy are endless. There are only positives when being able to work together with the goats in a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy the benefits of a fun and unique experience,” said Laura. “We have even been invited to share Goat Yoga with artists and VIPs at the Firefly Music Festival in Dover this year, which will be amazing.”

Laura’s husband is a fourthgeneration farmer, and this was evident with vast crops on the property, not to mention animals like peacocks, mini horses, and their new kitten that thinks it is a goat. While working on current events such as Goat Yoga and the family-oriented Goat Socials, the farm plans on having a corn maze to add to the fall festivities on the Eastern Shore.

The next stop on the tour was the five-acre historic property of Lavender Fields at Warrington Manor in Milton.

Owner Marie Mayor joined guests to show them around the property and inform them about various operations going on all over the premises.

Marie Mayor and Sharron Harris have been growing lavender at this farm since 2003, but have traced its lineage back as early as the 1600s.

The farm boasts up to 3,000 lavender plants and has specialty gardens such as the Herb and Flower Garden, the awardwinning Dahlia Garden, the Specimen Hosta Garden, the Native Wildflower Garden, and the Bee and Butterfly Garden where honey is produced by bees and sold to guests.

more, plus an endless variety of products made from the lavender and other plants on site. Restaurateurs and brewers visit to purchase fresh and locally grown plants for dishes or divine drinks, and there is a retail store filled with items.

Youth programs offered at Seashore State Park Delaware Seashore State Park offers a variety of environmental and historical programs geared to children of all ages.

These programs seek to nourish the participant’s interest in the natural world and cultural history of the park at various age groups.

Children 6 and up can participate in a program titled Mollusk Meet-Up at 2 p.m., Tuesdays. Participants dissect a squid and a clam, and compare their physical characteristics.

During this very interactive and hands-on program, participants gain familiarity with mollusk anatomy and get to write their names with squid ink!

Both children and adults participate in the seining program at 2 p.m., Tuesdays at Delaware Seashore, in which those enrolled learn how to use a seine net, still commonly used in marine research, to catch organisms within the bay. These organisms are then transferred to a baby pool where naturalists identify and discuss each species.

For the younger history buffs, park staff offers a hands-on, family-friendly museum tour at 10 a.m. Wednesdays.

Visitors will learn about the history of the Indian River LifeSaving Station and some of the heroic shipwreck rescues that

took place off the coast over 100 years ago.

A shark discovery program is held at 11 a.m., Thursdays, that focuses on teaching participants about the vital role various shark species play in the coastal ecosystem.

At 8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, the park will be offering its famous Wild Crab Chase program at the North Inlet Day Area, Participants should come with a flashlight to help them spot the nocturnal ghost crabs on the beach.

There will also be a beach bonfire from 8:30 to 10 p.m, Tuesdays. Marshmallows are included

The Felicianis have been on this property located close to the natural watershed of Prettyman Creek for 30 years; they pride themselves on education efforts, and caring for rare and uncommon plants. The farmstead is also home to a bed and breakfast, and it hosts a farm-totable dinner every month using many ingredients grown on site.

Helen led the group around the property, pointing out the rare and unusual species of plants on site, as well as more common plants including fruits,

vegetables, and spices. Some examples are lettuce, tomatoes, arugula, cantaloupes, sunflowers, eggplant, fennel, various beans, carrots, beets, eight varieties of garlic, asparagus, onions, and many more.

With a variety of plant species and foods grown at Black Hog Farmstead, many community members are involved through having particular plants on site because of restrictions in neighborhood homeowners associations. It is also important for the farm to educate and promote a sustainable lifestyle to the many children who tour it every year.

Sun Otter Tours offers tours throughout the year with many different locations and themes.

Del Porte will provide individual guidance and instruction to each artist.

The cost of the two-day class is $115 for members and $150 for nonmembers.

Peninsula Gallery to host opening reception July 7 In its new exhibition, the Peninsula Gallery introduces seven artists whose work will stretch the viewer’s imagination. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, July 7. The show will continue through Saturday, July 28.

From abstract to expressionism, each artistic style departs from the conventions of objective realism and seeks to arouse an emotional response. Abstract art uses the visual language of shape, color, texture, line and form to create a composition that makes little or no attempt to represent reality. Expressionism is art in which the image of reality is distorted to make it an expression of the artist’s inner feelings or ideas.

Sheila Cahill’s work is inspired by energy itself. She incorporates cosmic dimensions with fluid, starry, planetary energy, gaseous explosions, roiling skies, rolling seas, and always color. Formerly a lawyer and now a psychotherapist with a private practice in Washington, D.C., Cahill came to painting late in life. She said, “In painting, I have found a bottomless well of delight.”

Patrice Drago is from Annapolis, Md. She won her first award at the age of 9, and at 14 she started painting on sheets hung from the ceiling with house paint and huge brushes. Today her work is no less energetic, though it may be a little more sophisticated. “My soul is moved by vibrant color and energetic design.

There is always a constant underlying theme of sharp contrast and lightness of spirit,” she said.

playful compositions. Objects are suspended between the real and imagined world,” she said. “While I explore color combinations, I give the shapes organizational qualities and balance. Themes may change during this process, and often I will have no idea how my final image will look. It’s an enjoyable journey!”

Nina Mickelsen, a native of Finland, grew up with Nordic and Scandinavian design. Bright colors and bold shapes are still the main features of her work.

“I seek to convey strength and motion whilst exploring the juxtaposition of controlled shapes,” she said.

Her nontraditional silk-screening technique allows paint to mix freely over various surfaces. She will also work more in depth with resin epoxy adding other materials in order to create multileveled surfaces.

Clelia Cardano Sheppard is the one artist in this exhibition whose work most closely resembles reality. Yet even her work is more of an interpretation of that reality. Explosive, contemplative and triumphant, her paintings relentlessly explore the themes of time, identity, and connection. She grew up in Umbria surrounded by the Tuscan Hills, and

she now lives on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Peter Stolvoort’s works begin with a concept layout in an underpainting.

Copious amounts of acrylic paint are directly poured or applied with a customcut brush to create layers of color on the canvas. Then, the layers are accented with brush-flung strands, added materials, palette knife grooves and simple manipulation of the canvas to produce his signature sculptural finish. The energy and movement of this process creates vibrant currents of intertwined color, almost like grasses moving in the breeze.

GW Thompson creates abstract images that explore the surrounding world and the juxtapositions of man and nature. His paintings in this show are reflections on the current state of environmentalism. He said, “As a viewer you are asked to consider: The world is changing; is it our fault, can we stop it, do we want to stop it, do we even have the choice?”

Delaware railroad history exhibit to open in Lewes July 7 A new exhibit titled Delaware Railroads: Elegant Travel and Timely Transport, will be on display at the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes beginning Saturday, July 7. The exhibit replaces Discovering Delaware’s Maritime Past, which has been on view since June 2015.

Planned and created by the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, the exhibit utilizes photographs and posters, tickets, timetables, maps and historical objects from the collections of the State of Delaware to tell the history of rail travel and transport in the First State.

In particular, the exhibit will explore four railroads that were historically important in Delaware: The New Castle and

Frenchtown Railroad (1832), the Delaware Railroad (1852), the Junction and Breakwater Railroad (1857) and the Queen Anne’s Railroad (1896). The exhibit will complement Lewes’ 20th annual Chautauqua tent show – All Aboard: Delaware and the Railroad, which will take place Thursday to Saturday, Sept. 13 to 15. Economic growth, development and prosperity resulted from the construction of railway lines in Delaware. Due to the increased comfort and speed by which passengers and cargo could be transported, new connections to destinations and markets outside the Delmarva Peninsula were established.

This led to the development of canning companies and seafood-processing plants, al-

lowing products to be shipped to the larger metropolitan areas of Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York. Farmers growing peaches, tomatoes, strawberries, wheat and other crops became prosperous during economic boom times. Later on, chickens and holly wreaths became important commodities.

Passengers were able to take popular day excursions to special events such as the World’s Fair in New York City. Railroad travel was elegant and timely.

However, with the advent of improved highways, vehicles and freight trucks, rail travel in Delaware outside the heavily utilized Northeast Corridor ended by 1950, and freight lines were significantly reduced.

‘Beach Odyssey’ on display at Gallery One This is the time of year when many families begin their beach odyssey. It is a time for fun, family time, and reacquainting to the longer days and slower pace of beach life. The artists at Gallery One demonstrate their version of "Beach Odyssey."

Beaches are one of Delaware's great gifts. It is experienced in many different ways. "Just Us," oil by Marybeth Paterson shows "the inhibited time at the beach before the crowds arrive to embrace laughter and dance in the sand." "First One," pastel

by Laura Hickman features "an early beach-goer braving the brisk winds with towels, a large cup of hot coffee while enjoying the solitude and the beauty of the crashing waves."

The summertime beach becomes the family's playground.

"Connecting" acrylic by Lesley McCaskill tells a story of how the beach slows people down.

"I enjoy watching the body language of family and friends as they spend time catching up along with the visual play of color and textures.” All year long families look forward to their vacation at the beach, says artist Pat Riordan. "It's a great time for families to be together."

Her "On Vacation" oil features family life on the Rehoboth beach.

"Fun in the Surf" oil by Jeanne Mueller depicts the "happiness and fun of a child tiptoeing into the ocean waves and that moment of hesitation before plunging and splashing around."

Tara Funk Grim's "Beach Brellies – Oh the Stuff" mixed media is part of an ongoing series that tackles the continual movement and constant change at the beach. "Every nanosecond the beach is alive with motion, children running, buckets dropped, towels lost, snacks found, stuff everywhere."

Artist Joyce Condry explores a different odyssey in "Island Hopping" acrylic. "Haven't we all imagined sailing off to live on a warm, unspoiled island cooled by the ocean breeze? It is a place where we laze in the sun all day, sipping Mai Tais and listening to calypso music. In our dreams everything is perfect."

"Beach Odyssey" opens Wednesday, June 27 and continues through July 31. The popular Artisan Room features exciting textiles, hand blown glass, pottery, glass jewelry and wood pieces by local artists. Gallery One is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is always staffed by one of the artists.

Last fall, the City of Lewes approved the initiative to solicit donations from the Lewes area business community and local residents to fund a professional fireworks display on the 4th of July.

ABOUT 50 KIDS OF ALL AGES gathered just below the dune on Dagsworthy Avenue in Dewey June 16 to create a 65-foot-long sandcastle.

Darrell O’Connor, nine-time winner of the Rehoboth Beach sandcastle contest, gave a short tutorial on sandcastle construction tools and techniques to participants, showing them how to build towers, patios and stairs with moist sand.

Participants extended the sandcastle north and south from O’Connor’s original castle and added spires, free-standing arches, staircases, an antique car and other features. In all, the castle had 30 spires, carved buildings, a freestanding arch entryway, six staircases and an extensive wall.

managed to get through a decent amount of 2018 video game releases, including God of War, Far Cry 5, Detroit: Become Human, and A Way Out. However, as always, there are quite a few games that have released this year that I haven’t had a chance to play. Here are a few games that are on my backlog for this year.

Vampyr Vampyr is an action-RPG developed by the team behind Life is Strange. According to reviews, it has a great narrative and atmosphere, but the combat is flawed. I've definitely played and enjoyed a lot of games with less-than-stellar combat or other mechanics (Deadly Premonition comes to mind), so I'm going to give this one a try once it's on sale.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance If you know me, this one may come as kind of a surprise to you. It's not the type of game I

would normally be interested in, but I'm really trying to broaden my horizons when it comes to game genres. Something about the gameplay I've seen of this game just really intrigues me, and I hope to pick it up soon.

think I may be putting off playing 6 because I have a feeling it’s going to be a really sad ending. I swear I’ll get around to it soon.

After I get the final trophy for the Detroit platinum, I will play Yakuza 6 again.

I've been interested in Fe for a while, but somehow I haven't gotten around to playing it since its release in February. It's an “action-adventure” game, but according to what I've read and seen, it seems to have characteristics from many different genres. The environments look breathtaking and the gameplay seems right up my alley. I'm looking for more games to get for Switch, and I think I'll pick this up next time it's on sale.

Milton Theatre announces performing arts, tech camps Week-long performing arts camps will provide each child with the opportunity to learn the basics of what it means to be a true performer in the arts.

Campers will continue perfecting their abilities as a performer with daily workshops from trained professionals at the Milton Theatre. Workshops will include singing, dancing, acting and technical theater. At the end of the week, campers will perform two 30-40 minute shows showcasing the production they’ve put together throughout the week. Plus, they will be taking home an official souvenir production book of their camp shipped from New York.

Performance full-day sessions for ages 6-16 years old take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with fees of $320. Half day camp for ages 5-8 years will be from 9 a.m. to noon, for a cost of $200. Scholarship options are available.

Brand new tech camps offer a chance for attendees to learn directing, lights and sound mixing, staging, props and costuming, set design and more.

Backstage is where the magic happens. Kids who would love to explore the theatre aside from the stage-performance side would have an amazing time at this camp.

Tech camps are available the same weeks as performance camps, and each camp follows the same schedule.Tech camp full-day sessions for ages 8-16 years old are set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the fee is $200. Scholarship options are available.

Aladdin Camp is set for Monday to Friday, July 9 to 13.

Lion King Camp will be held Monday to Friday, July 16 to 20. Shows will be at 12 p.m., Thursday, July 19, and 11 a.m., Friday, July 20. Bike to Historic Lewes Farmers Market June 30 Bike to Market Day is this Saturday, June 30. The Historic Lewes Farmers Market urges everyone who can ride a bike (or walk) to the market to do so.

The market will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 30, at George H.P. Smith Park, Johnson and Dupont avenues.

The free annual bike raffle tradition continues. This year, the bike being given away is a Jamis Earth Cruiser 2 in bright lime green. Built to be a lighterweight cruiser, the bike comes in at just 29 pounds. Cruise-control handlebars were designed to promote a comfortable no-weight-on-the-wrists riding position. It also has a cushy seat, smooth rolling tires and no-slip pedals.

There is a black basket that can easily be removed to use at the market, and a bell that rings like an old landline phone to announce arrival.

Tickets for the raffle are free, and the winner will drawn Labor Day Weekend. In order to enter the contest, customers need to fill out a ticket at the HLFM Information Tent. Then, at 10 a.m., Henry Bennett of Bennett Orchards, will

host a sampling and information session. He will discuss how the Bennett farm produces its mouth-watering peaches and luscious blueberries that market patrons have come to love. Attendees will not want to miss this "berry" informative session.

The HLFM Wednesday Outdoor Market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is also open from 8 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, with an expanded number of vendors, at Crooked Hammock Way and Kings Highway in Lewes.

The market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market.

Amazing creatures: Delaware waters teeming with turtles

By Rob Rector MERR Institute The oceans off the coast of Delaware are teeming with countless amazing creatures.

Some, like the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin, are periodically visible when they breach the surface, While others coast by undetected. Throughout the summer, this column will highlight many of of these native neighbors so that readers may also appreciate the many species (some critically endangered) that peacefully swim just off our coast).

This week is devoted to the four species of sea turtles that call their Delaware waters their home.

Loggerhead Turtle Scientific name: Caretta caretta Notable by its large head and strong jaws (used for cracking open horseshoe crabs, mussels, clams, and other invertebrates), Loggerhead turtles have two claws on its front flippers and rear flippers with two to three claws. They can grow up to about 3 feet and weigh up to 375 pounds.

Loggerheads are highly sensitive to water temperatures, and can become cold-stunned by when the waters get between 55 and 59 degrees, so they avoid the cooler waters during their migration. The femalkes will travel thousands of miles to lay their eggs on the same sands which they were born. Having survived about 110 million years, these turtles are now endangered in the U.S. due to the destruction of their nesting habitat (largely from coastal development(, predation of their nests, human disturbance and pollution.

Leatherback Turtle Scientific name: Dermochelys coriacea The only sea turtle without a hard shell, the leatherback has a layer of tough, rubbery skin that is strengthened by thousands of bone plates. They can grow up to 6 feet and weigh up to 1,100 pounds. When leatherbacks lay their clutch of eggs (usually around 100, 80 of which are fer-

tilized), they undergo the longest migration between breeding and feeding, averaging about 3,700 miles each way. Even though they are classified as reptiles, they are able to maintain warm body temperatures in colder water. They are the best divers of any sea turtles, plunging to depths of 4,200 feet and able to stay underwater for up to 85 minutes. The leatherback is considered endangered in the U.S., due primarily to incidental catches during commercial fishing, pollution and human disturbance.

Green Sea Turtle Scientific name: Chelonia mydas Perhaps one of the most identifiable of sea turtles due to a pair of scales in the front of its eyes, the green sea turtle is marked by a small head and a single claw on all its flippers. They grow up to about 4 feet (weighing in at about 400 pounds) and are notable for taking rests below the surface under rocks and ledges to help protect themselves from predators. Young green sea turtles tend to be carnivorous, but evolve to be herbivores as they age. And while the green sea turtle can be found in temperate and tropical waters all over the globe, they are endangered due to commercial harvesting of their eggs, meat and leather and incidental catches from commercial shrimping.

Kemp's' Ridley Turtle Scientific name: Lepidochelys kempii One of the smallest of the sea turtles found in the area (growing up to 3 feet and about 100 pounds), they are also the most rare, and are listed as the world’s most endangered sea turtle. Mostly juvenile Kemp's Ridley can be found n Delaware and other east coast states, while adults usually stay in the Gulf of Mexico in shallow areas with sandy bottoms. There are estimated to be about 7,000 to 9,000 nesting females, but numbers suffer due to human collection of eggs and meat and incidental catching in commercial shrimping.

If visitors come across a sea turtle on local beaches, please call the Marine Education Research and Rehabilitation (MERR) Institute, which provides round-the-clock response to all sea turtles and marine mammals at 302-228-5029. MERR is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals and sea turtles and their habitat.

ome of the strangest nicknames, shots and events have occurred in golf over the years, and believe it or not, here are some of the strangest of them all. Has anyone ever hit a shot that you could call a “Captain Kirk”? I know I have on occasion. It ended up “where no man has ever gone before.”

We all have been in a sand trap and had a partner or friend say, “You are on the beach, but how about playing in the kitty litter.” Did you ever pull a “cleek” out of your bag on a long par 4 or par 5? If you did it was a two iron (hope you hit it straight).

Would you like to play in the Bob Jones Open Tournament (in honor of the great Bobby Jones) each year to raise money for medical research? If your name is Bob Jones or your first name is Robert, you can play with no problem at all.

AT SOME POINT IN YOUR GOLFING CAREER, YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR GHIN! At some point in your golfing career, you should check your GHIN! Not sure what that is?

If you are serious about your game, then check the Golf Handicap Information Network, which is the computer system used by the USGA and most American golf courses to calculate handicaps.

Now, let’s switch to famous golfer nicknames in a quiz format. I will give you the nickname and you guess who the golfer is or was in real life. He or she can be dead or alive and score one point for each correct answer and a bonus point if you know how he or she got the nickname.

PLAY OLD LANDING GOLF COURSE

Strange but true golf shots In the 1962 U.S. Open, Phil Rodgers tried to hit his ball out of a tree. The tree cost Rodgers the tournament victory, when he took four shots to hit the ball back to a playable lie. Sam Snead once lost the Cleveland Open by one stroke, when he hit a shot that went through an open door to the men’s locker room, then into the bathroom.

He was penalized two strokes.

A wayward shot by Hale Irwin at the 1973 Sea Pines Heritage Classic at Hilton Head bounced and hit a female golf fan seated in the gallery (in the chest) and lodged inside her sun dress.

An official ruled that Irwin got a free drop - after the “fan” removed the ball. (Irwin was not allowed to “pick clean and place.”)

Ever lose your ball on the green? In the 1936 Irish Open, golfer Bobby Locke hit a shot straight at the flag on the 12th hole at the Royal Dublin Course.

When he got to the green his ball was not in sight. After some searching, the golfers realized the ball was tangled in the flag.

The ball fell out when the stick was removed and he made a short putt for a birdie.

And last, but not least, two different shots that include a hot dog and a beer.

A golfer named Curtis Sifford (not a household name) was playing in the Quad Cities Open in Iowa when his ball landed on a discarded half-eaten hot dog, still in the wrapper. The officials invoked the pick clean and place rule, so Sifford wiped the mustard off his ball and put his next shot on the green.

And finally, one for the road.

In the 1949 British Open Harry Bradshaw hit a drive that landed in a broken beer-bottle on the fifth hole fairway at the Royal St. George Course. He decided to play from the beer bottle and when the ball only went twenty-five yards, he ended up with a double bogey. He lost the tournament in a playoff.

Cape represented well in Blue-Gold football game Coach Bill Collick retires a winner

By Dan Cook dan@capegazette.com Retiring Cape head coach Bill Collick went out on top, as his Gold squad defeated the Blue team 24-14 at the DFRC BlueGold All-Star football game at the University of Delaware’s Tubby Raymond Field June 23. His son, Billy, was one of his assistants.

It was the 63rd time the game has been played to raise funds to help people of all ages in Delaware with intellectual disabilities. Since 1956, more than $6 million has been raised to fund programs in the First State.

Each team was made up of 36 players, along with cheerleaders, senior and junior ambassadors, and band members. Players are nominated by their school’s head coach and are approved by a committee of coaches. Cape’s representatives were players Zach Dale and Ben Ashby, and cheerleaders Haley Schnupp and Lauren Steingrebe.

“The Blue-Gold game has truly been the best experience of my life,” said Dale. “I feel so proud to have been a part of this. I’ve made friendships that will last me a lifetime, not only from players, but from the Hand in Hand Program as well. It felt amazing helping coach Collick go out on top.”

“Cheerleading for the BlueGold All-Star football game was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Schnupp. “I have created so many memories and friendships that will last forever.”

The fish don’t care FISHING REPORT

other Nature just can’t make up her mind! The weatherman is probably pulling out his hair by now.

Supposed to rain and doesn’t, not supposed to rain and it does.

It has rained nearly every weekend except for the last two.

The fish don’t care and will bite anyway, but the fishing has been spotty at best depending on what you are going for and where.

The offshore action for tuna has been decent if you get on the fish, or it is just a long boat ride.

The 3 Amigos was out over last weekend and bailed nine tuna at one time. “We ran into some fish and nine rods went off at one time. It was a scramble to haul that many lines and keep everything straight.”

Marlin and mahi are also being caught.

Mako sharks have been decent catches but with the new regulations it is harder to get a keeper to the docks. Mako sharks now have to be 83 inches or larger to be retained by recreational anglers.

The flounder bite is picking up offshore at the Old Grounds.

The inshore bite is decent but there have been a lot of throwbacks.

The Lewes Canal seems to have the best action. Minnows and Gulp are the preferred bait.

I know many people like to use a double drop rig so they can have two baits out.

I prefer a single drop so I don’t go through bait faster. Most of the time the bait that is hit and missing is the bottom one.

The surf has been quiet, even for this time of year. Kingfish finally started hitting readily, more so on the southern beaches around Fenwick Island.

“The bite has been off this year for some reason” is all I keep hearing from fellow anglers.

There are days people don’t even catch a skate, which is unusual.

Shark fishing is not a problem but many are still doing it wrong and taking the sharks out of the water.

Flounder are in the first part of the surf along the edge of the sand drop off. Jigging for them is the best method to catch.

The Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier has been seeing off and on spot action.

The flounder bite has been decent with a lot of throwbacks. It is better fishing on the incoming into the outgoing tide window.

The end of the pier was removed and the low fence was put back. You can now fish the end of the pier. Unfortunately parks had to remove the skinnier end section of the pier for safety concerns from failing pylon systems.

The Kid’s Catch-All Tournament had a great turnout this year.

Lot of fish came to the scales.

Tuna, mahi, sea robins, flounder, croaker, and dogfish … just to name a few.

Delaware Surf Fishing has been hosting weekly beach cleanups on Tuesdays. “We like to do these on Tuesday since that is the least busy day at the beach. It is much easier and less intrusive to beachgoers.

A ton of trash removed from Inland Bays A group of 54 energetic volunteers hopped aboard boats June 9 and scoured the shores of the Inland Bays, removing a whopping one ton of trash.

Organized by the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, this cleanup event was run with the assistance of DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Section, and the Division of Parks & Recreation, with special help from Coast Guard Station Indian River and Dewey Beach Lions Club.

Altogether, 2,140 pounds (1.07 tons) of trash were collected and deposited into a dumpster provided by Waste Industries Inc., and disposed of via the Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s Community Clean-Up Initiative, once again sponsored by Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes.

The center extends thanks to Waste Industries and The Full Circle Project for their generous donations.

“As in past years, we’re seeing a large amount of plastic pollution in the form of soda and water bottles, wrappers, straws and shotgun shells,” said organizer Bob Collins.

The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays extends a massive thank you to the many volunteers, organizers, sponsors, and supporters that came out to make the bays beautiful at this year’s event!

The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays is a nonprofit organization established in 1994, one of 28 National Estuary Programs.

With its many partners, the CIB works to preserve, protect and restore Delaware’s Inland Bays, the water that flows into them and the watershed around them.
