ruth be told, I don’t think I know anybody (or, better yet, anybody I’d desire to know) who doesn’t like something savory tucked securely inside a good roll. Note the word, “good” – I’ve been read the riot act by several local restaurateurs when I criticized

their burger rolls! I consider it a compliment. And eventually, both (begrudgingly) changed their suppliers.

Add bacon (it’ll make your pelt shiny), a slice of cheese (dairy is healthy), some lettuce & tomato (it’s a salad!) and there’s nothing better.

Rehoboth Beach is loaded with restaurateurs who love to push the burger envelope. Take the Blackwall Mozzarella Burger at Blackwall Hitch: Not traditional by any means, but delicious nonetheless with melted smoked mozzarella, crispy pork belly, balsamic onions, arugula & tomato with roasted garlic mayonnaise on an onion-poppy seed bun. Then there’s the salmon burger at Summer House. It’s only available on Monday half-price burger night – and they often run out before the evening has ended. It comes with a polite dollop of lemon basil mayo and is truly delicious.

Tom Kramer at Lefty’s Alley & Eats whomps up one of the best turkey burgers I’ve ever had. Most cooks haphazardly overspice their turkey burgers in a vain attempt to give the no-

toriously mild bird some taste.

Tom’s is perfectly balanced.

They have changed up that burger since I last tried it; the current version is put together in the style of the Vietnamese

Toby Keith to play at Delaware State Fair The Delaware State Fair announced two of the 10 nights of entertainment for the 2018 Summer Concert Series held at the M&T Bank Grandstand.

Lavender Festival scheduled for June 9 The Lavender Festival at Lavender Fields at Warrington Manor, originally planned for Saturday, June 2, has been rescheduled to Saturday, June 9, because of the weather forecast.

The fest will take place from

10 a.m. to 4 pm. Admission is free. Visitors are invited to stroll through the lavender fields and attend one of the many demonstrations provided by Lavender Fields staff. Activities include workshops on making wreaths,

and growing and cooking with lavender and herbs. Cookies, scones and other treats featuring culinary lavender will be available at the Cottage Store.

Gallery One to feature Sanctuary exhibit Show on display through June 28 Gallery One in Ocean View announced Sanctuary is the theme for its exhibit open to the public through Thursday, June 28.

Sanctuaries are generally places of refuge and protection. Delaware is gifted with many areas of sanctuary. "The peacefulness of our waters has become a sanctuary for me and everyone that lives here. Our beaches and nature vistas captivate me," said Dianne Shearon.

Art, music set for Rehoboth Beach VegFest June 9 Rehoboth Beach VegFest will offer a broad range of activities celebrating compassion and plant-based eating Friday to Sunday, June 8 to 10. The event includes roving musicians and an art exhibit at Gallery 50, showing new works every year.

This year's art exhibit features the work of Leah Beach, a Delaware native who has traveled the world to photograph beauty and reality, and has expanded her choice of mediums into paint.

The artist's reception is from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, June 9, at Gallery 50, 50 Wilmington Ave., downtown Rehoboth. Appetizers are generously donated by The Cultured Pearl. Musical accompaniment is by Reboboth Beach festival favorite Buntopia.

Orozco particularly loves rabbits, hence the name Buntopia. She lives with several and works closely with rabbit rescue groups. Buntopia will perform Saturday, June 9, at Epworth United Methodist Church, and at the artist's reception that night as well.

Rehoboth Beach VegFest is the premier event of VegRehoboth.

The festival day includes food vendors, artisans, rescue and environmental groups, and passionate, informed speakers.

The Music Tent will include Buntopia, Kaleb Brown, Evangelina Guarjado, and Alex Razze. The Kids Tent will have activities all day with the Sussex Family YMCA, and the Healing Arts Village offers speakers

and experiences about how to heal bodies naturally. Attendees can ride the Jolly Trolley free between VegFest and the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand all day long.

Founded by Patricia Haddock and now run by President Tara Sheldon, VegFest has become an intrinsic part of the summer season in Rehoboth. The weekend activities begin with a film showing of "What the Health” at 7 p.m., Friday, free and open to the public; tickets must be reserved for appetizers at 6 p.m. Rehoboth VegFest culminates with Sunday brunch at Fork + Flask @ Nage with chefs Hari Cameron and Sean Corea.

Summer concerts in Bethany to begin June 8 Bethany Beach’s annual summer concert series on the bandstand will officially launch Friday, June 8 and will continue through Labor Day. The 2018 lineup will feature 11 acts completely new to the venue. “Our audiences show us what they like by how loud they cheer and how engaged they are,” said Julie Malewski, events director.

“We use that as a gauge for future bookings.”

The series will begin June 8 with Federal Street Band, a local up-and–coming country rock band that has opened for big-name country acts including Locash and Maggie Rose.

The unique tropical/Americana rock stylings of the Chris Sacks Band will be featured Saturday, June 9. Originally with Maryland band Captain Quint, this group has opened up for national acts such as Michael Ray, Joe Diffie, Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, and Mo Pitney.

Audience participation surveys and current events also play a key role in band selection. Groups featuring ‘80s music were highly requested.

There are three on the schedule: The Reagan Years, The Jimmie, and newcomer Guys in Thin Ties. There will also be an homage to the passing of Tom Petty with Damn the Torpedoes, and Greg Allman with southern rock tribute band High Noon. These are both new to the venue. Tribute bands continue to top the mostrequested list.

Weather cancellations affected several of last year’s shows.

Acts that were rained out are returning once again: I am King, the Michael Jackson Experience out of Las Vegas; Nashville singer-songwriter Sarah Williams; county act Triple Rail Turn; party rock band Three Sheets Acoustic;

and DJ Batman’s Dancing Through the Decades.

There will be two unique genre pairings as well. The Threetles, a trio comprising three local accomplished musicians, Pete Wiedmann, Cliff Hillis and Dennis Shocket, will play Beatles tunes Sunday, June 24, followed by Fab Forward, the winner of the 2016 New York Beatlefest, who will pay tribute to the Beatles members’ solo years. Then Sunday, Aug. 5, Buddy Holly Tribute Oh Boy! (featuring Walt Hetfield) will share the spotlight with School of Rock (comprising students from Hetfield’s rock ‘n’ roll music camp).

The town’s annual celebration of Périers Day this year will be Friday, July 27. La Vie en Rose, a New York band that blends American jazz, French chanson and pop music will commemorate this event which marks the twinning of the towns of Bethany Beach and Périers, France.

Once home to local community bands covering the Great American Songbook standards, the Bethany stage has grown to include a variety of genres.

“Someone told me last summer, ‘This is not your grandmother’s bandstand,’” said Malewski.

“Thankfully, he meant it in a good way. The bandstand draws crowds in the upper hundreds.

We try to offer something everyone will enjoy.”

On any given weekend, visitors can experience an eclectic mix of rock to country to jazz and everything in between. New to the roster are indie folk band Stella Ruze out of Philadelphia and the swinging jump blues group The Natty Beaux hailing from Washington, D.C. Attendees will want to bring their dads and their dancing shoes for that one, scheduled for Father’s Day, June 17.

Frantic Frets opens in Milton Music and antiques store sells vintage instruments

By Ryan Mavity ryanm@capegazette.com Frantic Frets Music and Antiques in Milton aims to be more than just your typical music or antiques store.

The business is based around the house of owners Al and Mary Knight. Al Knight said he envisions Frantic Frets as a neighborhood meeting place, where people can hang out and play music.

Al has been playing music and collecting guitars since he was 14. The Knights were in business together in a retail flower shop in their former hometown of Mountclair, N.J., for nearly 20 years. They moved down to Delaware when Al retired from school administration and Mary got a job as the development coordinator for the Center for the Inland Bays.

“We swore we would never do retail again,” Al joked. “I kind of want this to be people coming to visit me. Like it’s my living room. It’s not like going to be Guitar Center.”

Frantic Frets - named after the frets of a guitar and the name of Al’s band in New Jersey - consists of two small buildings: the guitar room off the main deck and the antiques room.

The guitar room is filled with colorful guitars, acoustic and electric, including a paisleystyle Fender Telecaster and a double-necked electric. Al said his personal favorite is a Godin-made three-voice guitar, so named because it includes an electric guitar, acoustic guitar and synthesizer in the same instrument.

He plays one himself, and he said there is one for sale at Frantic Frets.

The antiques room holds a number of vintage items, as well as additional acoustic guitars, which Al described as “beach guitars,” guitars that are ideal to be played at the beach.

Right now the antiques are in a detached building next to the house, but eventually they will be adjacent to the guitar room, Al said.

The Knights have been visiting the Delaware beaches for years, but they found Milton to be home.

“We rented a place in Broadkill Beach and fell in love. We want to be near the water. We decided we wanted to look for some property down here,” Al said.

Milton Theatre setting the stage for summertime fun

Kids can fuel their musical theatre passion at the historic Milton Theatre this summer.

The Milton Theatre has added new interactive camps to the list for their Annual Performing Arts summer camps program.

Camps offer a place for children to meet new friends, experience the world of entertainment, express themselves and be a part of what happens behind the scenes.

The week-long camps are designed to encourage young aspiring artists ages 6 through 16, teaching them the basics of what it truly means to be a performer in the arts.

THE WEEK-LONG CAMPS ARE DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE YOUNG ASPIRING ARTISTS AGES 6 THROUGH 16, TEACHING THEM THE BASICS OF WHAT IT TRULY MEANS TO BE A PERFORMER IN THE ARTS. Not only do the programs give children an opportunity to peek behind the curtain of show business, the camps focus on nurturing young performers to help them build confidence through performing on stage.

The goal of each camp is to experience and to learn how to put together a full-fledged production by the end of the week.

This summer, the theatre has added a tech camp for kids who want to learn more about the technical aspect of theater including design, building and operation of sounds, lights and the set.

Munzert feels that the camps are well-rounded and teach a variety of skills.

“We have the performance camp and the tech camp. In the performance camp, campers spend a week learning their staging, choreography and practicing vocals,” he said. “The tech camp, which is new this year, works on lighting, sound design, set design, costumes and prop design.”

Campers are taught by a staff of experienced and dedicated theatre professionals who instruct students on singing, acting, dancing and technical theater.

“We have an entire staff that teaches,” said Muzert. “There is a director running each camp and an assistant director. Then we have the tech staff. The tech director directs the tech camp and they have an assistant as well.”

The theatre offers an internship program for students in middle school and high school.

Interns may assist with summer camps and classes.

Scripts and music for all the musicals come directly from classic Broadway shows.

For both camps, the goal is to showcase two 30-40-minute productions by week’s end.

Campers perform a condensed version for the community and family members.

“The community is welcome to attend the weekend performances and we already have families planning to come. Kids perform noon on Friday and again on Saturday at 11 a.m.”

Munzert added.

There are four camps offered during summer, starting with Disney’s Aladdin on July 9. Next, the most popular and newest addition to the camps is Disney’s The Lion King, which

only has four spots left. Other camps include Annie and Seussical based off the works of the beloved children's author Dr. Suess.

“The camps are great for learning fast goal setting and achieving those goals in a fast fashion,” said Munzert .

Parents need not worry if their child is shy or nervous about performing in front of others. Any level of performer can be involved and learn something by the end of the week.

The camps are very hands on and allow campers to develop musical skills and confidence in a comfortable and encouraging environment while having fun.

“The camps really are for everyone,” said Munzert. “What we find is, in a camp setting it’s really relaxed. People are there recreationally so it’s calm. Children get a chance to explore and experiment with their craft.”

Auditions help place children in the appropriate roles for their comfort zone. Although if a child wants a leading role, they must be willing to sing in front of others for their audition.

“The great thing about the classes is that being spread out over 16 weeks, we get to work more on the choreography, staging and vocals because we have more time. We can really challenge our students.” he said.

In addition, scholarships are available for both camps and classes. “We don’t want people

shying away at the price if it is too much, there are scholarships available. Just call the office and we send a link of our online application for parents to fill out.

“Our scholarships are specifically need-based, not merit based.” Munzert said.

Detroit: Become Human is the pinnacle of Quantic Dream’s career

ame developer Quantic Dream’s critically acclaimed cinematic psychological thriller, Heavy Rain, is the reason I bought a PlayStation 3 in 2010 after exclusively owning Nintendo consoles my whole life. Even with its flaws, I thought it was brilliant and it completely consumed my world. Even when I wasn’t playing the game, I was thinking about it and about how all my choices affected the outcome.

I had never played anything like it, and I became obsessed.

I went on to get the Platinum trophy, and then bought the remastered version on PlayStation 4 in 2016 and platinumed that, too. I can only think of a handful of games that I have been completely consumed by,

and Detroit: Become Human just made that list.

As I was playing through Detroit, I kept seeing little moments that reminded me of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, two games I love dearly.

I know a lot of people hated Beyond: Two Souls, but I really enjoyed it. It was definitely not without its flaws, but there isn’t another game like it. That’s something I love about Quantic Dream’s games; they are truly unique experiences. Sure, maybe the gameplay isn’t the most challenging in the world, but it’s challenging enough to keep you engaged with the characters and the story. Detroit wouldn’t exist without Heavy Rain and Beyond; they were the building blocks Quantic Dream needed to achieve something as great at Detroit. It reminds me of that famous saying from another video game I love: “Greatness from small beginnings.”

Detroit feels like everything Heavy Rain and Beyond wanted to be. David Cage and the whole team at Quantic Dream always had a clear vision of what they wanted their games to be; they just never had the tools to fully realize that vision. As a fan of narrative, single-player experiences, I am thrilled that development teams like Quantic Dream exist. As I plugged away at my first playthrough, I couldn’t help but get emotional; this game is everything I’ve ever

wanted for a game in this genre.

I feel blessed to be a gamer.

If you enjoyed Heavy Rain or Beyond, you absolutely have to play Detroit. Not only are all the characters interesting and well-developed, but the voice

acting, the graphics, the music … everything is outstanding.

The narrative about androids and humans is a metaphor for some real-world issues happening around the globe today, and I was really moved by it. This

game changed the way I think throughout the course of the story, and I encourage everyone to play it.

A Different Kitchen restaurant in Milton recently celebrated its one-year anniversary by launching a Sunday brunch! Highlights include the sashimi tuna and avocado plate, kimchi eggs Benedict and baked mango french toast.

Author Gail Priest to sign books at Browseabout June 9 Gail Priest, author of “Eastern Shore Shorts,” a new collection of short stories set in Eastern Shore towns will sign copies of her book from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 9, at Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach. The book contains stories set in Berlin, Cambridge, Chestertown, Chincoteague, Easton, Rock Hall, Salisbury, St. Michaels and Tilghman Island, and captures the unique feel and distinct culture of the Eastern Shore.

Priest’s compelling characters cross paths as they meander through the charming towns, tranquil landscapes and winding waterways of the Eastern shores of Maryland and Virginia. From the female barber who runs into an old flame to a man who’s held out for love too long, and from a cranky dog trainer to a meddling mother-of-the-bride, the well-drawn characters bring the

“I love the way the characters in these stories are connected and pop up in different ways— like real life here on the shore,” said Jane Richstein, co-owner of Sundial Books in Chincoteague, Va. Rachel Simpkins from the Ward Museum of Wildlife Art in Salisbury, Md., echoed that sentiment, describing the book as a “collection of stories that reflects the unique character of these Eastern Shore towns and the intricately woven relationships of the people that call these places home.”

Priest is no stranger to the area and has written about it before.

Her popular Annie Crow Knoll trilogy was based on the time she spent, over a nearly 20-year period, at Evergreen Knoll in Betterton, Md. Priest was captivated by the personality of the enclave, which is nestled along the shore of the Sassafras River at the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay. “I feel honored to be able to write about this area,” said Priest.

She said she feels a strong connection to the Eastern Shore region that has inspired her

The theme line of Eastern Shore Shorts is Priest’s way of acknowledging that she is not the only person who feels drawn to the Eastern Shore. “Whether you’re in the heart of the Eastern Shore or the Eastern Shore is in your heart,” she said.

Readers may recognize the iconic art of Erick Sahler, whose work appears on the cover of the book. “I could think of no one better to convey the Eastern

Catch wave of conservation with World Oceans Day June 8 will mark the 26th annual World Oceans Day, where global events take time to honor, protect and conserve the various bodies of water that Delaware is fortunate enough to border.

This year, the event is particularly prescient, as the Trump administration announced in January a plan to open most offshore waters to drilling. This past April, the president signed an executive order to review, and possibly reverse, the offshore drilling ban from former president Barack Obama. To call attention to the damaging effects of offshore drilling and seismic testing, the Blue Frontier Campaign, a marine conservation group, is organizing the March for the Ocean on Saturday, June 9, in Washington, D.C. More than 150 organizations are joining in support to draw attention to the multiple issues currently facing our oceans,

including the Delaware-based Marine Education Research and Rehabilitation (MERR) Institute. Listed below are various ways readers can participate in a variety of ways in activities to promote a healthier ocean and a better future.

Events/ways to participate June 9: The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays will host its annual Inland Bays Cleanup on Saturday, June 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Let the Big Dog Sleep?

W

hen your golf cart pulls up to the first tee box and your adrenalin starts to kick in, the moment of truth has arrived. To be or not to be, that is the question!

Now, if I leave Shakespeare out of this equation and appeal to your inner being, are you going “to be aggressive” or are you going “to be conservative,” when you reach into your bag for the first shot of the day?

If you are a scratch golfer, “let the big dog eat,” as Kevin Costner said in the movie Tin Cup. But if you are a mid to high handicap, “think before you reach in the bag; are you going to let the big dog sleep?” (I don’t know who said that quote first in the history of golf, but I’ll take credit for it.)

Before you tee it up, do you look down the fairway to check out the danger, or do you just “grip it and rip it?” (I think Costner said, “grip it and rip it” nine or ten times in Tin Cup and I highly recommend watching the movie (again), because it shows the battle between skill and ego and the inner demons we all face on the course.)

If I could hit my driver consistently off the tee, my handicap would be around ten instead of eighteen.

I usually play with guys who are eight or nine years younger than I, and to be honest I want to “grip it and rip it” along with them. (I still have a baseball mentality as my inner demon.)

But a funny thing happened recently. I was tired of carding the highest score in my four-

some and having to buy lunch for the low score winner each time we played, so I teed off all day with either my three wood or five wood, depending on the fairway length and hazards. I shot an 85 and enjoyed a free lunch.

So to answer Shakespeare’s eternal question, I wanted “to be” conservative off the tee, keep the ball out of the woods and water and reap the benefits. Now for the question that Shakespeare should have asked in Hamlet, instead of “to be or not to be”: “If I can shoot in the mid-eighties without using a driver, why don’t I consistently use a three wood off the tee?” That is the question. The answer: Pick out three letters like playing Scrabble (OGE) and make the one-word answer.

So ask yourself the same question, is it time to put your “OGE” back in the bag and grab the three wood? And one more thing to consider: When people “who let the big dog eat,” but don’t have a clue as to where the ball is headed, yell “fore!”

According to Kevin Dukes, an orthopedic surgeon from Oklahoma who heads up the Tulsa Bone and Joint Association, over 42% of golf injuries occur to the head and face, so protect your head first with your hands and forearms and crouch down to be smaller target.

Now Dukes did not put this in his pamphlet, so I will remind you: When the cart girl has stopped by your foursome numerous times, and later you hear someone yell fore, don’t turn toward the ball, laugh and dare it to hit you.

You may go home with one of two bad things happening; a concussion or trying to explain to your wife why you will not be a loving husband for the next few months.

Special Olympics Summer Games set June 8-9 Summer Games is Special Olympics Delaware’s largest sports event.

More than 600 athletes and nearly 100 Unified Partners (peers without disabilities) from across the state compete in six sports – aquatics, bocce, powerlifting, softball, tennis, and track & field – Friday and Saturday, June 8 and 9, at the University of Delaware’s David Nelson Athletic Complex.

In addition, a Motor Activities Training Program demonstration involving children ages 2-7 will take place Friday morning in the pool and Friday afternoon on the track. All events are free and open to the public.

More than 140 coaches have provided training over the past three months in preparation for the competition, and over 1,000 volunteers from DuPont, other corporate/venue sponsors and the community help make this event possible.

In addition to competing, athletes have the opportunity to participate in fun, educational, and health-related activities at Olympic Village on Friday and at the Healthy Athletes venues on Saturday.

The Opening Ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m., Friday at the Bob Carpenter Center. Scott Klatzkin, the Voice of the Blue Hens on 94.7 WDSD, serves as

emcee.

Among the highlights of the ceremony is the parade of athletes and the lighting of the cauldron by the Outstanding Athlete of the Year, Matt Montgomery of the Wilmington Wizards, and the Winnie Spence Torch Runner of the Year, Lt. James Diana of the Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement. The Flame of Hope arrives at the ceremony after traveling 160 miles over three days as part of the 32nd annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

Flounder slump comes to an end OUTDOORS

s noted in previous columns, I have been on a flounder slump for a couple of years. While I have caught a few, I have not had one big enough for the box in two seasons. All that changed May 29, when Larry Weldin and I fished the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

We had my boat in the water and away from the Lewes Boat Ramp shortly after 9 a.m. The current was still running in, so we drifted toward Lewes until slack water around 11 a.m. By that time, we were south of the Savannah Road bridge, and I had my lunch as we waited for the current to start running out.

Once we had outgoing current, we drifted along the east bank toward the bridge. Right on the southeast corner of the bridge, I had a bite and a fish on that was taking drag.

At first I thought I had a rockfish, but when it came in sight, I saw a very nice flounder. Larry did a masterful job with the net and my fish was soon flopping

around on deck.

Once I calmed down, I came back and we fished that hole for more passes and ended up with me holding the boat against a wood piling while Larry made several casts without result.

We continued to drift out of Lewes along the east side of the canal until I caught a 17-incher along the marsh edge. We also had a couple of shorts and a few small fish that let go of the bait before coming in sight.

I was fishing with a green bucktail and a green Gulp! crawfish. Larry was using a white bucktail and a live minnow. We were both actively jigging the lures.

These are the bucktails donated by J.D. Custom Tails to help with the fundraising efforts for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network; they are available at Lewes Harbour Marina.

By 2 p.m., we were at Roosevelt Inlet and decided to call it a day. For someone without a keeper flounder in two years, it was a great day on the water.

Back at Lewes Harbour Marina, the big flatfish measured 24 inches and weighed 5.10 pounds.

Tony did a fine job cleaning both fish, and I was happy to give the 17-incher to Larry.

Lucky fishing hat You may notice in the photo accompanying this article that I am wearing my lucky fishing hat. I have had this hat for

Luck does not always mean catching fish. It often means getting out and back without sinking my 22-year-old boat or having my 22-year-old motor expire.

It means having fun and enjoying the day regardless of the fishing results.

The wife also thinks I have too many five-gallon buckets and too many fish rags. I have explained to her that it is impossible for a man to have too many buckets or rags, because you never know when an emergency will strike and then it is too late to run out and get more buckets and rags.

For all of you guys out there who are suffering from the same harassment, I do feel your pain.

a very long time, but my wife keeps insisting that I throw it away and get a new one. How, exactly, do you get a new lucky fishing hat?

This hat and I have been through good times and bad, big fish days and zero fish days.

We have been rained on, soaked with ocean spray, bleached out in the sun and blown around in the wind.

The wife claims if it was a lucky fishing hat, I would catch a lot of fish every time I wear it.

Oh, how little they understand.

Right now, the hottest fishing around is in the Delaware Bay, with black drum the target.

Most boats are fishing from evening until dark with whole surf clams the top bait. The Coral Beds off Slaughter Beach and the area around Cape May, N.J., seem to be the hot spots.

Nighttime jetty jockeys are scoring keeper rockfish on black or purple Bombers or JP Minnows. A few keepers have also been caught on white bucktails with a white worm during the day.

Two trophies will also be presented for the overall biggest catch of the day, as well as a Goober’s Choice Award.

The overall tournament winner will receive a custom Andy & Opie fishing rod, crafted by the local PC Rods, a $300 value.
