City, police working on safety plans for Victoria Day weekend

BEACHES-EAST YORK Council-

lor Brad Bradford says he is working in partnership with Toronto police and city staff to ensure a safe Victoria Day long weekend in the community.

In 2021 and 2022, the Woodbine Beach area was the site of numerous incidents involving large, unruly crowds that put residents, visitors to the area, and law enforcement officials in danger during the Victoria Day long weekends.

However, police significantly increased their presence in the area on the Victoria Day and Canada Day long weekends in 2023, strictly enforcing alcohol and fireworks bans in the local parks and beaches which resulted in much more peaceful celebrations.

“In 2022, Victoria Day at Woodbine Beach was a horror show,” said Bradford in a statement to Beach Metro Community News in advance of this coming weekend’s Victoria Day events which include the traditional fireworks display on the night of Monday, May 20, at Ashbridges Bay.

“That’s why last year, I worked with city staff from multiple divisions and the Toronto police to ensure that the resources were in place to stop that from repeating, and together we had a much safer weekend for everyone.”

While Toronto police have yet to reveal their plans for the coming Victoria Day long weekend regarding community safety, it is expected (though not confirmed) that they will hold a news conference either this Thursday or Friday with representatives from 55 Division and East Command at Woodbine Beach to provide more information.

In advance of both the Victoria Day and Canada Day long weekends last year, police held news conferences by the Woodbine Bathing Station to make known their plans, which included a significant presence of officers and other police resources, along with a warning to those looking to cause trouble that there would be “zero tolerance” for any illegal activities.

Last year’s police news conferences prior to the long weekends emphasized that consumption of

Affordability a key issue at meeting on Woodbine plan

THE CITY of Toronto held its second community consultation for a development proposal at 985 Woodbine Ave. on the evening of Monday, May 6.

The meeting was attended by 115 participants including BeachesEast York Councillor Brad Bradford, Bousfields Inc. Planning’s Mike Bissett, as well as representatives from Choice Properties REIT and the City of Toronto planning department.

“This is a really important application for all of us here in the com-

munity,” said Bradford. “This is a resubmission of an existing application but it is quite a bit different than where we started.”

In 2019, Choice Properties REIT submitted an application for construction of a 15-storey residential mixed-use building and a ninestorey residential building totaling a GFA of approximately 33,156 square metres at the site.

However, the revised application now seeks a 35-storey residential building on the northeast corner of Woodbine and Danforth avenues that shares an underground parking with a 10-storey residential building on the southwest corner of

Avenue and Strathmore Boulevard.

With the Woodbine Subway Station located just north of Danforth Avenue, Bradford applauded the applicants for “the widened public realm” on the Woodbine frontage of the proposal that will now prevent commuters from “spilling onto the street”.

However, Bradford stressed his and the public’s sentiments regarding the importance of building homes that people can afford.

“Site permeability, high quality public realm, and housing that people can afford. All these things are important for me and I know that

that’s been the topic of discussion,” said Bradford. Mark Richardson, a volunteer with advocacy group HousingNowTO and a strong supporter of the revised plan at 985 Woodbine Ave., shared Bradford’s views on the need for housing affordability in the area.

With much of the developments around Toronto comprising condos that are for sale, Richardson said that he was “very happy to see that (this development) is rental housing”.

However, he questioned whether Choice Properties REIT (which is controlled by the Weston family

are the owners of

Companies which include Shoppers Drug Mart) is keeping the community in mind when considering affordability.

“Between your own grocery store and the four Shoppers Drug Mart within a kilometre of this site, you have hundreds of Choice employees or employees of Choice franchises,” he said.

“How many of those people earning what they earn in Loblaws or Shoppers Drug Mart would be able to afford the rent that you’re proposing in these buildings?”

Beacher Sandra Wendland taking part in Canada’s Ultimate Challenge

SANDRA WENDLAND, a Beach resident and mother of two, took on an extraordinary journey as a contestant on the second season of Canada’s Ultimate Challenge, a CBC reality competition series that transforms the Canadian landscape into an obstacle course.

Being in the best shape of her life and having a background as a personal fitness trainer, Wendland was prepared for the physical challenges she would encounter on the show but admitted she wasn’t ready for the emotional and mental hurdles she faced during The Challenge.

Describing herself as a “competitive alpha female,” Sandra’s past as a competitive soccer player, fitness trainer, and boot camp instructor is a part of what fuels her constant pursuit of physical challenges.

But Canada’s Ultimate Challenge still tested her in ways she never anticipated, revealing emotional and mental aspects she wasn’t fully prepared for.

“The first week of isolation was like nothing I’ve ever experienced,” Wendland shared. “Complete loneliness. You’re just caged up, you have no outlet, and then all of a sudden, you’re thrown into a challenge with complete strangers.”

The show commenced with the players’ first challenge in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where Wendland

met her team members, The Green Team, consisting of Darko Boskovic, Ninko Pangilinan, and Shasily Matowe for the first time and 10 minutes later had to collaborate with them to complete the challenge.

On Sunday, April 28, Wendland hosted a season premiere viewing party at The Wolfe Tone Irish Pub in the Beach with support from pub manager Rebecca O’Malley. The event drew a large crowd of supporters eager to cheer on Wendland as she kicked off the season.

Wendland is very grateful for the overwhelming support she’s been receiving since the show premiered on television.

“I’m getting texts from

people all the time saying ‘Team Sandy!’ It’s been so amazing,” she remarked.

Now that she has finished the filming of her recent TV experience, Wendland is back to her life in the Beach.

A realtor with CREW & Co Royal Lepage Estate Realty primarily serving East Toronto, she also runs Sweat with Sandy fitness programs tailored for local women and moms. The fitness program aims to enhance both the physical and mental wellbeing of those involved, and Wendland is proud to be an active member of the community.

“I’m really involved in the community,” she said. “My kids go to Courcelette, I’m a Balmy Beach Club member, I train other great women in the community and I sell houses here. This is just the most amazing neighbourhood, and I’m never ever leaving.”

Finished basement with separate entrance as well as an additional studio in the back garden, gazebo covered deck. Short walk to subway, acres of greenspace, and fantastic Danforth amenities.

As Wendland’s journey on Canada’s Ultimate Challenge continues to unfold, she said that it’s clear to viewers who watch the show that her experience has changed her life. The show presented Wendland with a unique opportunity for significant personal growth. She said she took up journaling, meditation, and looking inward – reflecting on how she had approached many obstacles in her life.

After her week of isolation to start the show, Wendland emphasized the importance of human connection; a lesson she believes resonates deeply with others living in today’s “very busy world.”

Amidst the trials and triumphs of Canada’s Ultimate Challenge, Wendland found personal growth and lifelong friendships.

The next new episode will be broadcast on Sunday, May 19 on CBC.

Free Spirit @ Riverdale Hub alcohol-free bar and restaurant open on Gerrard St. E.

ONE OF Toronto’s first alcohol-free establishments opened recently inside the Riverdale Hub on Gerrard Street East just east of Greenwood Avenue.

Free Spirit @ Riverdale Hub bar and restaurant is set in a beautifully renovated century-old building which includes a café, co-working and event spaces, and three galleries.

Riverdale Hub operates under the model of innovative social entrepreneurship and environmental sustainability and is also known as the home of the Riverdale Immigrant Women Enterprises (RIWC), a registered charity with a mission to empower racialized, immigrant and refugee women and their families.

During the pre-opening media night event, Riverdale Hub’s director of operations, Katrina Chan, said the plan is to “keep it casual” with food and drinks being served from the bar and enjoyed in the gallery’s spacious, yet intimate dining room on the main floor.

The mocktail list features alcohol-free mojitos, mules, martinis, and more, all without the hangover. There’s

The

restaurant

also a selection of six zero-alcohol beers, including three craft brews from Collective Arts Brewing in Hamilton, Ont.

As for the food menu, the selection caters to carnivore, vegetarian and vegan preferences, and the samples we tasted on media night were uncomplicated and tasty. Many dishes were presented on pretty wooden boards crafted by Scarborough furniture company, Just Be

Woodsy, repurposing wood from a 144-year-old silver maple that was felled on Langley Avenue.

The prix fixe menu was a choice of Caesar salad with brisket bacon or Nicoise salad with vegan tuna followed by a choice of flatbreads such as Caprese with mozzarella fior di latte, extra virgin olive oil, and fresh basil; or Avocado Toast with pesto, cherry tomatoes, and extra virgin olive oil.

at 1326 Gerrard

A fruit platter or petit sweet treats were the perfect finish to the light, healthy dishes. There is no expectation or need for tipping at Free Spirit @ Riverdale Hub, and proceeds from the restaurant go towards breaking down barriers for equity-deserving groups while supporting a living wage for staff. Please visit https://riverdalehub.ca/free-spirit/ for more information and operating hours.

Beach history at Queen and Lee should be saved

As a person who has tried to save historic sites and preserve Toronto’s, and in particular the Beach’s, history for more than 50 years, I thought my time was done and I would let other “rebel young activists” beat the heritage drum.

The current “heritage site” in the Beach that is in danger of being demolished is at the northwest corner of Queen Street East and Lee Avenue. It is not an imposing structure but it does have character and some architectural qualities, historic and other, that should be noted.

I have given dozens of tours along Queen Street East in the Kew Beach area, and I have always pointed out that particular store to the people. Now I am soon going to be giving an historic tour to some young school children and that building will be included.

That’s what changed my mind to try and continue working to save our Beach history and buildings. It’s not only for the older Beachers, but for the young Beachers growing up. And that’s why I’ve reversed myself about my time being done on this cause. This is a building that is worth saving, especially for the young people.

The corner of Queen and Lee is the historic heart of the Kew Beach area and possibly the entire Beach community. Though I suppose that could be open to debate.

But that intersection has the

historic Kew Gardens park, which was started by Williams family. It also has a modern structure on the southeast corner. On the northeast corner there is a modern building as well. But on the southwest corner, we have a lot of Beach history including the park, the former bank building that is now home to the Coles book store, a three-storey apartment building and then the Beaches Branch Library.

Which leads me to the northwest corner, where the Foodland store is now located. That building is about 120 years old and it has a special metallic ceiling inside along with many other features.

We need to work together to preserve this building as there is a proposal to demolish it and replace it with a six-storey building. Please Beachers, let’s preserve our Beach history. I will be writing more

about this in upcoming issues.

Historic Walk in Kingston Road Village on May 25

I will be leading an historic walk in Kingston Road Village on Saturday, May 25, starting at 1 p.m. We will meet at Victoria Park Avenue and Kingston Road to start the walk.

What will this walk be about? It will be about a village that started more than 100 years ago, and we will trace the history from its start as an Indigenous trail through to the modern-day road it is today.

While we now have some fabulous drinking establishments along Kingston Road between Victoria Park Avenue and Main Street, there is a long history of them in the area. One of them goes back 175 years. Kingston Road Village even had its own saddle-making shop in an old building.

There was also the first municipal golf course in the city in the area.

But how many people can tell me about Kingston Road and its French Connection?

And what about more modern times in Kingston Road Village? Well, just recently we had a great addition called The Big Carrot on the ground floor of the building on the southeast corner of Kingston Road and Southwood Drive. And where else could you find a bookstore called The Great Escape?

That location has been the home of a bookstore for decades.

We have had roller rinks, theatres, wood planing mills, furniture stores, great restaurants (then and now) in Kingston Road Village.

I look forward to seeing you on May 25.

growing with the aggressive behaviour of some off-leash

Re: ‘Irresponsible dog owners a continuing problem,’ In My Opinion, Alan Shackleton, April 30, Beach Metro Community News. I want to commend you on your editorial in the current Beach Metro Community News edition. It needs to be said and it needs to be said as clearly and bluntly as you did.

My dogs are always on a lead and like you, my frustration at people who, as I like to say to them “think they’re special”, refuse to follow the rule of law and, almost to a person, become very aggressive, often abusive when they are politely asked to control their dog, has grown exponentially over the past several years.

What has been most concerning is that, over the last year or so, I have noticed a marked increase in the number of people who, not only let their dogs run off lead in on-leash designated areas, but walk their dogs on city streets off leash as well. I have witnessed several near misses as an off-leash dog has dashed into the street after a squirrel,

dog owners

or worse, a child on a scooter or someone on a skate board.

Inevitably the person will call their dog and walk on, still off leash, without any acknowledgement that their dog may have come at another dog or frightened a child. And if someone says something to them they either ignore it or come back with an abusive remark that usually includes one or two expletives.

It is a sad commentary on our society today that so many people seem to be only concerned with their needs with no thought to how they may be impacting others.

While I fear that in writing your piece you will be ‘singing to the choir’, hopefully it will encourage those who agree with you to rise up and say as Peter Finch famously said in the movie Network, “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!”

Editor should be on a leash

Re: ‘Irresponsible dog owners a continuing problem,’ In My Opinion, Alan Shackleton, April 30, Beach Metro Community News.

I would like you to know that there are people who would rather see you on a leash and the animal running freely in open spaces. Dangerous dogs and dangerous controlling righteous people are an equal problem. How you see life is not how everyone sees life, and this is why 50-odd years has changed nothing.

I’m looking forward to ignoring your ideas for another 50 years.

The Beach Bridge Pub Crawl draws keen crowd of players to Queen Street East

IT WAS a Saturday morning on Queen Street East in the Beach. The was some sun, even some wet snow, but mostly dry. Shoppers were slowly filling the street, but inside the Beaches Brewing Company 48 bridge players were crowding to pick up their registration package for the Beach Bridge Pub Crawl, the second one held in the Beach and possibly all of Canada.

Name-tagged and colourcoded, the players dispersed among the three local pubs involved in the pub crawl –Beaches Brewing Co., Breakwall BBQ and Smokehouse and The Gull and Firkin. The players were keen, very keen, for the event that took place on April 20.

“A bridge pub crawl??” you might ask.

Well, yes! Duplicate bridge for the fun of it and for the joy of playing in a pub with fellow bridge lovers.

“How does this work?” you may ask next.

The 48 players were divided over the three participating pubs – 16 players per pub. They played three rounds of two boards, six in all, before lunch.

Lunch was then served in the same pubs, which meant that all three pubs had the benefit of 16 customers. After lunch the personalized route map directed all 16 players in each of the three pubs to rotate. Yes, they met their friends on the street, because the pubs are within easy walking distance.

In the second pub they all played another three rounds of two boards and then they all moved on to the third pub where they played the final six boards. It was all clearly described in their itinerary.

that was held on Saturday, April 20.

were part of the “crawl” were The Gull and Firkin

After finishing play in the final pub all participants gathered in the home pub for the results and the prizes. The results were calculated by the accredited director, Laurie Miller.

As she could not be present in three pubs at once there were three assistants, who were playing participants as well. The players were encouraged to settle disputes amicably among themselves. There were no masterpoints to be earned; play was just for the fun of it and of being together on a spring day.

The entire event took about five hours. “You’ll be tired by the end of the day,” the organizer warned.

“Where does this all come from?” you may wonder. From the Netherlands, where there have been Bridge “Kroegentochten” –pub crawl, sometimes called café bridge – for many years in many towns. There are even bicycle bridge pub

crawls.

Ada Spanjaard, the organizer of the Beaches Bridge Pub Crawl and the author of this article, brought the idea over from a bridge kroegentocht in her home town of Delft.

She anticipated that this concept could be duplicated in Toronto and went to work on how to organize it. Gradually, she got some interest from a few pubs. The result was an organized bridge pub crawl in 2018 for 36 players. The Crawl became a big success; players requested another one. Soon. Then came some obstacles and COVID.

This year, however – encouraged by members of the Toronto East Bridge Club – the time was ripe for a second one, this time with 48 players.

“But I don’t drink!” some would say. No problem. Drinking alcohol is optional; non-alcoholic drinks are included in the registration fee, as is lunch and loot bags

and prizes. Easy peasy.

“It was challenging to explain the concept to the pub owners”, Ada will tell you. In the Netherlands pubs may compete for participation, but here in Toronto the whole idea was totally foreign and it took a lot of explaining.

In the end, both pubs and bridge players benefit from the event in business and entertainment. It’s a win-win situation for all. Left-over proceeds, if any, go to a local charity as this is a not-forprofit event. For now.

Fireworks display set for May 20

alcohol in public parks in and beaches in the area was illegal, as was the use of any fireworks. In 2021 and 2022, large groups of people setting off illegal fireworks and using them as weapons to shoot at other people and buildings was a persistent and dangerous problem during the Victoria Day long weekends.

“Remember, city bylaws prohibit the use of fireworks on the beach, and anyone caught breaking those rules could face a $1,000 fine,” said Bradford.

“Stay safe, leave the fire-

works to the professionals, and let’s ensure we can all enjoy a safe, fun kickoff to summer.”

This year’s City of Toronto fireworks display at Ashbridges Bay starts at 10 p.m. sharp on Monday, May 20, and is expected to last between 12 to 13 minutes.

The fireworks display is visible all along the Boardwalk and the Eastern Beaches, and draws huge crowds to the area to celebrate Victoria Day.

Those planning on attending are urged to use public transportation or walk to the area. Ashbridges Bay Park is located at 1561 Lake Shore

Blvd. E. at the foot of Coxwell Avenue at Lake Ontario.

Toronto residents are also reminded that it is only legal to light off fireworks on private property without a permit on Victoria Day and Canada Day. Displays on private property cannot be set off after 11 p.m. It is illegal at all times for residents to light off personal fireworks on public property, including parks and beaches.

Beach-based Captains & Poets helps students find their identities through learning resources

Captains & Poets is a social emotional learning (SEL) program, originating in the Beach, that is dedicated to helping kids discover their identities.

For the past half-decade, Captains & Poets has provided learning resources to schools that help teach children how to find their “inner captain” and their “inner poet.”

Everybody has a captain and poet inside of them, helping them navigate their worlds and connect with their surroundings, said Jennifer Johnson of Captains & Poets.

Johnson and Jan Frolic are the founders of Captains & Poets.

A person’s captain is the part of the self in charge of leading their lives. The captain decides how to handle obstacles, and is in charge of showing courage when necessary, explained Johnson. A person’s poet is the part of the self that expresses and communicates deep feelings held within. The poet shows vulnerability when necessary, and helps connect with others on a deeper level when necessary.

“When you heighten your own sense of self awareness, you are able to then understand other people better, as well, so we want to bridge those differences with this human curriculum,” said Johnson.

Captains & Poets offers teaching resources for students in kindergarten to Grade 12. Along with Canada, the company also provides resources to the United States, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Australia, Malaysia, and is planning to expand to the Philippines. Frolic and Johnson also showcased their work to the United Nations before the start of COVID-19 pandemic. The resources they offer are tailored to the needs of the schools they are working with.

“We are not going in with a blanket solution to any schools. We are going in, building, in collaboration with teachers and principals, really focusing on what their pain points are, and building out a program that fits their community, specifically,” said Frolic.

She said the SEL method offers immense value to children.

“This is stuff that adults go to therapy and counselling for all the time, because they are feeling out of balance. If we are giving this to kids early, they won’t need that. They will have it inside them.”

Johnson said Captains & Poets helps “anchor” children. “That can help them navigate peer pressure and challenges. The fundamental message is that you have everything you need inside you.”

Frolic, who grew up in Oshawa, has lived in the Beach for the past 20 years. She went to

Bishop’s University in Quebec to study music and sociology, and moved to Toronto after graduation. She first lived in the west end before moving to the Beach with her family including her three children.

“I’m a water baby. If I was going to stay in the city, I needed to be close to the water,” said Frolic on why her family chose to live in the Beach neighbourhood.

“I wanted my kids to grow up feeling like part of a neighbourhood, and in a community.”

Before Captains & Poets, Frolic was senior vice-president of a women’s organization called Women of Influence, which aims

to promote women’s rights in the workplace. She decided to move to education, and co-found Captains & Poets with Johnson to make even more positive change in the world.

Johnson lives in the Roncesvalles area of Toronto. She studied English and psychology at McMaster University for a year, then transferred to the University of Toronto.

After her undergraduate degree, she studied at U of T’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) for her teaching degree.

The Art Show set for June 1 and 2

ON JUNE 1 and 2, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., The Art Show Toronto returns with an event set for southwest Scarborough.

The Art Show Toronto will take place at 64A Queensbury Ave. and will be open for anyone to come see and buy local art. Refreshments and treats will also be available at the show.

Started by Peg Graham in the early 1980s in Riverdale, The Art Show Toronto exhibited mostly painters for its first two years but has since expanded to many other art forms. Graham has studied art throughout the years, and the connections she made led to The Art Show Toronto then taking place in southwest Scarborough on Ridgemoor Avenue from 2007 to 2014..

During that period the show featured 16 local artists presenting their works.

The show is a non-profit that raises funds to support Maasi women in Tanzania through a secondary school.

By 2014 proceeds from the show had sent 20 Maasi girls to school before RBC took over the support for the students, and to this day the education for those young girls continues.

The Art Show Toronto started back up again in 2022 after the COVID-19 pandemic, and features the works of a variety of artists working in paint, mixed media, ceramics, woodworking, cards, and coasters.

The proceeds from the show now go to the non-profit Indspire to help Indigenous youth.

Those attending the show are also encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food items for local food banks.

fields Inc Planning, highlighted that there would be 14 rental replacement units in the proposal that remain “at an affordable rent”, although he expects the remainder will be market rate.

This didn’t satisfy residents in attendance with one describing market rates for rentals as “unhinged from reality.”

“If we’re talking about making this building market

rates, we’re talking about more and more average people that are not actually going to be able to afford these units because market rates currently are unaffordable to average incomes,” said Beaches-East York resident Adam Smith.

Although there was no concrete guarantee provided for the affordability of the remaining 632 proposed rental units, Choice Properties REIT said they are open to discussions with residents to hear “if that is one of the elements that is important to the community”.

“We are contemplating assessing the opportunity to bring affordable housing through different ways,” said a Choice Properties REIT representative.

“But for now it’s too soon for us to confirm what the level of affordability would be and whether the percentage would be more than what is existing on those replaced units.”

In the spirit of ensuring equity in the neighbourhood, Kaila Hunte, a former resident of Strathmore Boulevard, suggested the inclusion of accessible units for people with disabilities.

“If you haven’t been think-

ing about that yet, maybe I can just put this bug in your ear to consider it,” said Hunte.

Considering the increasing demand for accessible units in Toronto, Hunte pleaded with Choice Properties REIT to think about the community’s most vulnerable residents.

“People with disabilities often have some of the most difficult times finding housing that meets their needs,” she said.

“In a city like Toronto, it’s shocking the lack of accessible housing that is available to them. So, since this is a rental, I think it’s something that you should definitely consider because people will take those units.”

Other concerns included traffic impact with the increased density in the area.

City officials confirmed that the area has sufficient road capacity for the new development.

However, car owners can expect some inconvenience as the proposal has “relatively low rates of parking” with only 152 parking spaces provided for the 646 units.

“Through the zoning report, we will also exclude this development from on-

street permit parking,” said a city official.

“People who live in these buildings will have to find parking in the garage or make other choices for their mobility which, in this location, there are many other options.”

There are currently 14 residential units on site, nine of which are rented with the remaining five being vacant. With these units expected to be demolished, the developer is providing the mandated rental relocation assistance package to residents.

This will include four months notice of eviction as well as three months rent compensation. There will also be additional compensation such as a moving allowance.

Tenants who choose to return to the new building when it is completed will be able to do so at a similar rent to what they are now paying for their units, according to a city bylaw.

Malvern Collegiate baseball team trip included three pro games in the U.S., tournament in Windsor

THE MALVERN Collegiate Institute varsity baseball team recently went on a trip to watch some pro baseball games in the United States and then take part in a tournament in Windsor, Ontario.

The Malvern team was invited by Northern Secondary School to join them on their annual baseball trip to the U.S. in mid April.

The trip involved watching Major League Baseball (MLB) games in Pittsburgh and Cleveland; a Double-A game in Akron, Ohio; and playing in a two-day tournament in Windsor.

Both schools set off on the trip on a Coach Canada bus on Friday, April 19.

First stop was Pittsburgh, PA, where Malvern and

Northern were in the stands at PNC Park that night to see the Pittsburgh Pirates host the Boston Red Sox. The Redsox won 8-1.

The following day, Saturday, April 20, the teams went to Akron to watch the Akron Rubberducks (who are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians) play the Erie Seawolves (who are the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers) at Canal Park. The Seawolves won the game by a score of 6-5.

Finally, on Sunday, April 21, the team members from the two schools watched their third and final game in Cleveland, OH, at Progressive Field to see the Cleveland Guardians host the Oakland Athletics. The Guardians won 6-2. Malvern Collegiate then

played three games over the next two days in the Windsor tournament. Malvern lost its first two games falling to Holy Names Catholic and L’essor, both schools located in the Windsor area. Malvern won its third and final game of the tournament against Leamington.

Key players in the tournament for Malvern included Ian Skinner with two doubles and five RBIs (runs-battedin);, Reid Farr who had two singles, a double and a couple of RBIs; and Nolan Keith and Aaron Britton, who both pitched shutout innings.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Malvern Collegiate co-op student Jack Skinner is a member of the Malvern baseball team. Ian Skinner is his younger brother.

M

ay is a month of joyful anticipation: bursting blossoms, warmer weather, longer days, sunnier skies and the first long weekend of the season when cottages open and barbecuing becomes the norm.

It is perfect timing for our local ingredients: maple syrup, asparagus, fiddleheads and rhubarb to play centre stage, just in time to celebrate the holiday, Queen Victoria’s birthday. Yum!

Spring Greens with New Potatoes, Fiddleheads and Asparagus

This vibrant salad is the reflection of spring using local asparagus, fiddleheads and hot house tomatoes. Serve with grilled salmon or trout for a complete main course. (recipe follows)

Tip: If fiddleheads are unavailable, use more asparagus

12 new potatoes, scrubbed and halved

1 lb (500 g) fresh asparagus

8 oz (250 g) fiddleheads

8 cups (2 L) mixed salad greens

2 hot house tomatoes, cut into 4-8 wedges

Maple vinaigrette:

1/4 cup (50 mL) white wine vinegar

1/4 cup (175 mL) olive oil

1 small clove garlic, crushed

2 tbsp (25 ml) maple syrup

2 tsp (10 mL) tarragon

1 tsp (5mL) each, Dijon mustard and salt

1/4 tsp (1 mL) fresh black pepper

Cook halved potatoes in steamer until tender, 15-20 minutes. Remove and cool.

In same saucepan, bring enough water to a boil to cook asparagus and fiddleheads. Break the tough ends off asparagus and discard.

Wash the fiddleheads in several changes of water opening the fronds to remove any grit. Trim ends.

Cook asparagus and fiddleheads in rapidly boiling water uncovered 2 minutes; drain.

Toss salad greens with asparagus, fiddleheads and enough vinaigrette to lightly coat. Arrange tomato wedges on top.

Leftover vinaigrette can be refrigerated and used for future salads. Makes 4-6 servings.

Grilled Maple Glazed Salmon or Trout

The fish can be grilled on a barbecue or baked in the oven. Either way, the preparation is quick and simple. It is the original convenience food!

Any leftover glaze may be mixed with some mayonnaise and served as a sauce for the fish.

1 1/2 lb (750 g) salmon or trout fillets with skin

on Maple Glaze: 1/4 cup (50 mL) maple

May is the month for local ingredients

syrup

1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard

1 tbsp (15 mL) fresh lemon juice

1 tbsp (15 mL) soya sauce

1 clove garlic crushed Glaze: In small mixing bowl, stir together maple syrup, mustard, lemon juice, soya sauce and garlic. Set aside.

To bake in oven: Line baking dish with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 425 F(220 C ). Arrange fillets on baking dish skin side down, spoon sauce generously on fish and cook 15 minutes.

To barbecue: Preheat barbecue to medium- high. Arrange fish on foil sprayed with baking spray skin side down and spoon sauce generously over fish. Grill with barbecue lid down 10-15 minutes or until fish flakes easily.

Serve immediately with salad. Makes 4 servings.

Rhubarb Orange Cake

Tangy fresh rhubarb combines well with orange

in this “travelling cake” perfect for picnics, trips to the cottage or simply as a celebratory birthday cake for a Happy Queen Victoria Day!

Tips: For easy removal of cake, line baking dish with parchment paper. Each piece should come out perfectly.

If you have a food processor, add slices of orange rind (about 3) together with brown sugar and process until finely grated.

To remove any bitterness from rhubarb pour boiling water over cut up rhubarb and let stand a few minutes. Drain, then use in recipe.

1/2 cup (125 mL) butter

3/4 cup (175 mL) each, granulated and brown sugars (not packed)

1 egg 1 tbsp (15 mL) grated orange rind

2 cups (500 mL) allpurpose flour

1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda

1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt

1/2 cup (125 mL) each, plain yogurt and milk, mixed together

2 1/2cups (625 mL)

rhubarb, cut into 1/2 inch (1 cm) pieces

Crumble Topping: 1/4 cup (50 mL) softened butter

2 tsp (10 mL) cinnamon

1 cup (250 mL) packed brown sugar

Line 13 x 9- inch (3 L) baking dish with parchment paper. Preheat oven to 350 F (180 C)

Using an electric mixer, beat butter granulated and brown sugar together until smooth.

Beat in egg and orange rind until well mixed. In separate bowl, stir together flour, soda and salt.

Mix dry ingredients into creamed mixture alternately with the yogurt-milk mixture. Fold in rhubarb and combine well. Spoon batter evenly into prepared pan smoothing the surface.

Topping: Stir together soft butter, cinnamon and brown sugar combining well. Sprinkle evenly over cake batter. Bake about 45 minutes or until cake has risen and is firm to the touch and skewer inserted in centre comes out clean. Makes 12-15 pieces.

Author Jerry Levy releases The Philosopher Stories

LOCAL AUTHOR Jerry Levy recently released his new collection of short stories, The Philosopher Stories It is his third publication of story collections after Urban Legend (Thistledown Press, 2013) and The Quantum Theory of Love and Madness (Guernica Editions, 2020).

“I started writing about 30 years ago when I was overworked and stressed because of my day job. I had always been a reader, but never a writer. So, I decided quite on the spur-of-the-moment to take some creative writing classes as a means to obtain a better work-life balance,” said Levy.

Getting accepted by literary magazines after submission, Levy gained the opportunity to put together a collection of his stories, which was published by Thistledown Press in 2013 under the name Urban Legend

He has been writing and publishing since then, and Levy now serves as a judge for the Writer’s Union of Canada’s annual Short Prose Contest and a regular contributor of book reviews to the Ottawa Review of Books He said The Philosopher Stories is a series of 12-linked stories that centre around Karl Pringle, a young man who had been doing his PhD in Philosophy at the University of Toronto but was kicked out. Now he’s unemployed and lives above a butcher shop in Kensington

Jerry Levy has released his most recent

collection -- The Philosopher Stories.

Market. And in every story, he gets into trouble.

“On the face of it, you would think that Karl is simply a loser,” said Levy, “But he’s also a young man grappling with life’s big questions: love, success, loss, death, rejection, and fate. And maybe most importantly, he’s someone who desperately wants to not be invisible, he wants to matter.”

A resident of the Woodbine and Danforth avenues area, Levy said he enjoys living in East Toronto.

“Sometimes when I’m looking for inspiration, I just take a walk along Queen Street and check out all the people and stores, read the Beach Metro News. It’s amazing how a single word, a single vision, an unexpected event, can inspire new stories.”

Asked about why setting the story in Kensington Market, the west end of Toronto, Levy explained that Kensington Market is “the most bohemian part of the city. The main character, Karl, is an outsider, and the Market

readily accepts outsiders.”

Levy mentioned one challenge he faced during writing was how to complete each story because they are all linked together.

“I’m of the opinion that a short story should entertain and provide a satisfactory ending. Endings that tie all the loose strings together provide readers with a sense of closure and enable them to remember the stories better,” he said. Levy said he had to be mindful to provide that satisfactory ending and yet make sure “to conclude the stories in a way that made sense and didn’t infringe in a strange way upon the next story.”

Published this year, Levy hopes The Philosopher Stories can bring happiness to more readers.

“I’m hoping readers will not only be entertained but also see the deeper meaning behind the stories.”

The image (at right) of a house up the hill on Wheeler Avenue was taken in 1925. As you can see, the road was unpaved at this time. I imagine cleaning up after yourself was a higher priority, especially on rainy days.

Do you have an old photograph of your house that you’d like to share with our readers? Please contact me at gdvandyke61@gmail. com
