Bells on Danforth set for Saturday CYCLISTS FROM across Toronto are expected to converge on Danforth Avenue this Saturday, June 15, for the eighth annual Bells on Danforth event. The family friendly bike ride begins at 11 a.m. at the north end of Withrow Park, on Logan Avenue south of Danforth Avenue, and will travel for eight kilometres along the Danforth. Organized by a number of local cycling groups, the event aims to raise awareness of the need for safe cycling options on the Danforth. “According to bicycle counts over 3,000 cyclists are riding along Dan-

forth, for transportation, recreation and shopping,” said Bells on Danforth organizer Mary Ann Neary in a press release. “As the city grows, we feel it is more important than ever that the Danforth be recognized as an integral part of Toronto’s cycling network. We have seen from the success of Bloor, Richmond and Adelaide that more and more people are using protected bike lanes as routes to get around Toronto by bike.” The route for this year’s ride will see cyclists travel east along Danforth Avenue from Withrow Park all the way to Danforth Road in

Scarborough, and then back to the Oakridge Community Centre on Pharmacy Avenue. At the community centre, participants can join in a fun fair and/or take part in a Scarborough Safe Streets event. “We are so pleased to serve as the endpoint for this wonderful ride and this year we’re thrilled to be able to highlight so many groups working to make our streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers,” said Louise Gilmour, a member of Toronto East Cyclists in a press release. TORONTO AND East York Community Council is expected to make a decision later this month on a heritage designation being sought for a home at 28 Bracken Ave. in the Beach. The call to have the home designated as such was approved by the Toronto Preservation Board at its meeting on May 29. The two-and-a-half-storey home, built in 1915-16, has been deemed to meet the criteria needed for a heritage designation according to a May 22 report presented by the City of Toronto’s Heritage Preservation Services, City Planning, Urban Design department. That report stated the house “has a design value as an exceptionally finely-crafted example of Arts and Crafts architecture rendered in the Shingle Style which is evident in its complex massing of roofs and dormers integrating a Continued on Page 2

Car fire in driveway of Beach home considered ‘suspicious’ A FIRE which severely damaged a Porsche parked in a Beach driveway early Friday morning is considered suspicious. Toronto Fire was called to a home at the northeast corner of Glen Ames and Long Crescent at approximately 12:41 a.m. on June 7 for reports of a fire. When fire crews arrived they found a Porsche Panamera sedan in the driveway fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and then checked the house

to make sure the fire had not spread. No one was injured in the fire. However, fire crews at the scene deemed it suspicious and handed it over to Toronto Fire investigators and Toronto police to look into. That investigation has not yet revealed a cause for the car fire. Toronto Fire would not speculate on whether the fire was connected to two other incidents early Friday morning in Scarborough in which vehicles were burned under suspicious circumstances.
