School Board, and others who worked together to make this creative, collaborative project happen.

This new school will meet the decades-old need for a high school in Wasaga Beach. The province embraced and applauded the project when originally presented, and now, after months of hard work and dedication, one of the largest school projects ever approved by the province, with funding of $57.7 million, is moving forward. The plan is to have the new school open by 2027,

creating a true community hub beside the new Wasaga Stars Arena and Wasaga Beach Library, offering a 300-seat community theatre, postsecondary school education, daycare, and much more.

May 1st, 2024, marked a historic day in Wasaga Beach. On that sunny afternoon, we welcomed Stephen Lecce, the Minister of Education for the Province of Ontario, to the new Wasaga Stars Arena and Wasaga Beach Public Library for a special announcement. Joining the minister were MPP for SimcoeGrey, Brian Saunderson; Shawn Cooper, Trustee for Wasaga Beach, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board; town staff; members of Council; and representatives from all the community-minded contributors to the collaborative plan to bring a high school and a true community hub to Wasaga Beach.

The exciting event commenced with introductions and a welcome to all. Children from a Grade 2 class at St. Noel Chabanel sang our National Anthem before Mayor Brian Smith greeted everyone and expressed his sincere thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this day happen.

MPP Brian Saunderson took to the podium and shared his thoughts about the amazing project coming to Wasaga Beach, and then introduced the Minister of Education, the Honourable Stephen Lecce.

Minister Lecce praised the efforts of so many, including town staff, Council, and the many people who contributed to putting the unique and forward-thinking plan together. He announced the $57.7 million provincial funding approved for this project, one of the largest education funding announcements ever in the Province.

The new Catholic school will be built beside the recently opened Wasaga Stars Arena and the Wasaga Beach Public Library. Future students of the elementary school and high school will benet from the state-of-the-art arena and library facilities. Altogether, the K-12 campus will offer students a dynamic learning environment and residents a hub for education, sport, and many forms of community engagement.

The innovative project includes a new community theatre that students can access during the school day, which will be available to the Wasaga Beach community on evenings and weekends. This will ll a theatre facility void in the town and help support the growth of a strong arts and culture sector in our town.

Looking to the future, the Town has also established MOUs with Lakehead University and Canadore College that would see specialized programming delivered through the Town's new arena and library, and within shared facilities on this new K-12 campus. This specialized programming would be targeted to skilled trade professions in childcare, construction, healthcare, and hospitality elds, in addition to specic programming opportunities for adult and lifelong learning.

The County of Simcoe has also provided a letter of support to bring muchneeded childcare facilities to the new school campus. The K-12 elementary and high school campus, and community theatre, are expected to open in 2027.

The dream of this collaborative and creative community hub and high school was our front-page feature in the October 2023 issue of beach BOOSTER (#208), and with the efforts of town staff, council, and support from so many, we are pleased to share the exciting announcement that indeed marks a historic day in Wasaga Beach.

Looks like it's going to be a very busy year for the Wasaga Beach Cruisers, with things shaping up in the events arena. Norm Copithorn, our events coordinator, tells me we have a nearly full calendar with something for The Cruisers just about every weekend. Go to our club's web page www.wasagabeachcruisers.ca to see our events list or come out Monday Nights and see what's happening. Upcoming events include Friday, June 14, at 97.7 Max radio station with a food drive and barbecue. Father's Day car show at Rama Casino on June 16, and The Wasaga Beach Cruisers Fun Run on June 21 & June 22, just to name a few

Wow, another great turnout for our general meeting. Last one before the season opener, Monday May 13, at Cruisers Corner Stonebridge. 170 plus chairs set up and not one empty seat. Well done, members. Being informed and active is a big part of your club.

Well, I've got something special to share with you this month. Pictured here is a true classic car from days gone by. Reg has owned this 1959 Corvette, also known as “Vendetta,” since 1967. The reason Reg ended up with this '59 is because his 1957 Chevy Convertible was destroyed in a garage fire. Reggie's mother, a lover of cars herself, gave Reg the insurance money from the fire to purchase the car. Reg bought this '59 Corvette that had been sitting under a tree for years, covered in tree sap, bird droppings, and whatever else falls out of the sky. Reg's rescued Corvette was driven for a few years, then Reg decided to turn a lot of elbow grease into a winning show car. And a winner it is indeed, winning many awards over the years at Speedsport at Toronto's C.N.E. Reg had custom paint done to the car, including Mother of Pearls in the coves, plus hand-painted pin striping and interior redone top to bottom. Nicely done, my friend! Along with the fabulous paint job, the word “Vendetta” in gold leaf graces the fender tops. Custom wheels of the day are fantastic. Reg replaced the 283 Chevy engine with a very nice 327 cu. in. squeezed in between the fenders. Reg stored the car for many years while life moved forward, but it's back on the road again. Good to see it glorifying the road again. Thanks for bringing a real classic to be a part of The Wasaga Beach Cruisers.

Chuck Dalli has sent a request out to all members who would like to have their car professionally photographed. We did our cars in the last shoot and it was a great experience. Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation, is pleased to share that the Dave and Gail Gibbons Trivia Night raised $14,000 supporting end-of-life care.

The event was held at the Wasaga Beach United Church. Participants were entertained by rounds of trivia, songs and comedy, beautifully executed by hosts Dave and Gail. Over 170 people were in attendance for the event. Funds raised will go directly towards Campbell House and programs like grief and bereavement counseling in the community

“Dave and Gail Gibbons created an atmosphere that seamlessly blended entertainment with the spirit of giving,” said Trish Rawn, Executive Director of the Hospice Georgian Triangle. “We are overwhelmed with the incredible community of Wasaga Beach. Approximately 40 percent of our patients are from Wasaga and it is important for the community to know our services are available to them.”

The evening began with a heartfelt address by the Honourable Wasaga Beach Mayor Brian Smith who shared his mother's experience at Campbell House at the end of her life.

“Dedicated donors, Peter and Rita Premich once again stepped up to the occasion, contributing $6,000 to overall funds raised. The Metropolitan Toronto Shinglers Association also surprised us with an additional $5,000 gift. This was a true display of the generosity of our community and supporting donors,” added Sandra Sullivan of Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation.

Adding to the generosity, local businesses contributed more than $1,700 in prizes and a share-the-wealth draw was held.

Hospice Georgian Triangle provides compassionate care to those living with a life-limiting illness, respite care, pain and symptom management, as well as grief and bereavement support to the families and friends, caregivers and anyone impacted by a diagnosis or loss. Community events like Trivia Night ensure that programs and services are offered at no cost to patients and their families.

Sixty years ago, a group of four individuals got together, and decided that they would give as much as they could for those in need. Rev. Donald French, Sidney Martin, Morris Bent and Stanley Piltcher established under the sponsorship of Stayner's Lions Club, the “Wasaga – Oakview Lions Club” in May 1963. The Wasaga Beach Lions Club was the first service organization in Wasaga Beach.

Today, the club boasts 41 Lions who form a cross section of our community These Lions embrace the Five Pillars of Service: Vision, Hunger, Diabetes, Cancer, and the Environment. Improving the quality of life for others locally, nationally, and globally is the definition of Lionism.

Our local Lions are a very active club. From service projects, fundraising, selling chocolate bunnies, marching in the Santa Claus parade, and flipping pancakes, as a group, all members enjoy what they do.

Since inception, The Wasaga Beach Lions Club has continued to be a community focused organization that has significantly contributed to our hospitals, hospice, food bank, local groups, charities, schools, youth programs and residents requiring health related services.

Over the past 60 years of Lionism, the club has donated $2,500,000 for our community plus provincial, national and international projects.

The Wasaga Beach Lions Club's many fundraising events over the years have included Friday Night Bingo, “Elsie the Cow”, boat lottery, beer garden, Home & Garden show, car draw, bake sale, vendor & craft show, Junefest dance, Stanley Cup Lottery, Casino night, Trivia, and Memorial Golf Tournaments. The Town of Wasaga Beach has received donations in the amount of $725,385 for a skate park, arena, community centre, traffic monitoring, medical and dental centre, library extension, $200,000 for the construction of the RecPlex, and recently $30,000 for the new digital/media room in the new library

Collingwood General Marine Hospital also received over $76,500 and Royal Victoria Hospital $55,000 for the betterment of health care in our region. The club has improved the quality of life for many in need for the past sixty years, donating $53,000 to assist with the purchase of glasses, helping to purchase scooters, wheelchairs, lifts and other medical equipment.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship was established in 1973 in honour of Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International. This is the highest form of recognition to acknowledge a Lion's dedication to humanitarian service. The Wasaga Beach Lions Club has twelve Lions who are members of the Melvin Jones Fellowship. The Helen Keller Fellowship award is an award that enables Lions Clubs to recognize Lions and local citizens for their “untiring service.” The award was created by the Lions Home for the Deaf, honouring outstanding citizens and organizations in the Lions Club scope, after Helen Keller's 1925 speech at the Lions Clubs International Convention, challenging Lions members to be “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” Wasaga Beach Lions are proud to have seven Lions who are members of this fellowship.

Wherever there is a need, you'll find Lions ready to roll up their sleeves and find a solution. People join Lions for many reasons. Some because they have been helped by Lions, a family member or friend invited them or because they want to volunteer. A Lions Club is an international non- sectarian, non-political service organization which provides the opportunity to do as a group what we cannot achieve on our own, to serve and make the world a better place.

On May 11, 2024, Wasaga Beach Lions celebrate not just the legacy of all members who served in this club the last 60 years but the legacy of Lionism we share today

Their motto is simple, but says it all - “WE SERVE”

Although Catch 22 re-opened a couple of months ago as the wellknown and respected fine dining establishment it has always been, the Official Grand Re-Opening took place in mid-March.

Chef Bob, Chef Zack, and Debbie were joined by Mayor Brian Smith, Deputy Mayor Tanya Snell, and Councillors Joe Belanger, Richard White, Faye Ego, and Ellen Timms as the ribbon was cut and a certificate was presented.

The much-loved restaurateurs were reminded by the mayor and councillors of how much the community appreciates this amazing restaurant, its menu offerings, and renowned service.

Beach BOOSTER was pleased to be a part of this event, and we congratulate the Catch 22 team and welcome them back to The Beach.

Wasaga Beach is nally on the cusp of obtaining a complete education system for its community When the plan between the various education entities and the town comes together, our children will be able to attend school in this community from Junior Kindergarten to the end of secondary school and perhaps even through post-secondary education. This awesome development has many of us in a state of eager anticipation because we believe that this school brings life-changing possibilities for the kids of Wasaga Beach.

For the rst time in our town's history, students will not have to leave town each day to attend high school. It is impossible to exaggerate what this means for our kids. Firstly, they will never again be referred to as the “beach kids” by students and staff in the various high schools they attend, who see them as "lesser than". Students from The Beach had the reputation of being particularly disruptive. That negative branding of our teenagers has been an additional burden no youngster needs to bear. Add on the hours wasted on transportation each week, and the challenge to full participation in high school life, and you have the recipe for failure to achieve during those critical years of adolescence.

A high school in town will afford our kids the opportunity to perform in plays, be part of a musical group, and play school sports. And they will be able to do this as they are cheered on and applauded by their own community. One day, a thousand high school students will be performing community service in our town. A successful Co-op program will see our own children learning skills and working throughout our town. Our many tradespeople will have a supply of young people eager to be apprentices in a chosen eld. This will happen in a meaningful way because we will have professionals living and working here on a full-time basis to build these programs.

The economic impact of a local high school should not be underestimated. Our teenage students have been spending millions of dollars each year in Elmvale, Stayner, and Collingwood. That yearround spending locally will be a lifesaver for many of our small businesses. And local spending will spawn new businesses, which means local jobs and additional services for all of us. The presence of a high school in Wasaga Beach brings dozens of professionals to this community. It represents a payroll of millions of dollars which will be spent locally. All of this economic activity benets every citizen of Wasaga Beach. From a purely nancial viewpoint, the ofcial announcement of a high school will be a catalyst for economic development. Major service companies will see our town as a great investment opportunity

The year 2024 may very well go down in the history of this municipality as the most dening one –the year in which we come together as a community to provide present and future youngsters a golden opportunity. By providing a rst-class education for our beach kids, the entire community will reap the rewards that come from creating an exciting, vibrant lifestyle. Crucial in this step forward is the solidarity and support for the projects that will make it happen.

For decades, our children did not have the opportunities that every other child has. The project proposed by our elected ofcials and the Simcoe-Muskoka Catholic District School Board will nally provide equal opportunity for our young people. As citizens and taxpayers, our task is clear and simple: give our unequivocal support and encouragement.

Note: Your comments are appreciated. The column on the origins of the term “Beach Kids” elicited responses which confirmed my personal research and observations. Those were gratefully received. Every effort will be made to respond to your letters. (tochuckandrews@gmail.com)

High School students embracing high school activities at their own, home town school

Last year, I had the privilege of creating and producing a video documentary special of the Wasaga Beach Remembrance Ceremony. The Wasaga Beach community was fortunate that the Stayner Legion volunteered as a central part of organizing the event, as Wasaga Beach did not have a Legion.

It has been more than 50 years since the Royal Canadian Legion had a Branch in Wasaga Beach. The Legion was founded and incorporated under an act of the Canadian parliament. The locally created Legion Committee received authorization for a new Legion Branch for Wasaga Beach, Ontario, on April 15, 2024, by Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The Local Legion is looking for active members to help support the legion and its mandate. Wasaga Beach Legion 05-645 is mandated as a club, society, or association that's organized and operated solely for social welfare, civic improvement, pleasure or recreation, or any other purpose except prot.

The best-known way of raising funds for veterans is the poppy drive leading up to Remembrance Day. The sale of poppies provides veterans with service initiatives for health care, shelter (permanent or temporary), wheelchairs, devices, etc., to help with their quality of life.

There are different members and committees that deal with youth functions, competitions, activities like sports, writing, art, track & eld competitions. Then there are tournaments for all ages in golf, euchre, darts (single & mixed), horseshoes, curling, horseshoes, cornhole, shufeboard, trivia, pool, and billiards.

There will be dances for various occasions as part of the social interaction that Legions everywhere create. For now, the Wasaga Beach Legion will not have a brick-and-mortar place to drop in on. The Legion lacks the funds to end up with a building. If you have an affordable building available, contact the Legion Council. Many businesses and the Town itself have made it clear that the Legion is and will be supported. Local businesses have places available for all to gather and share a sense of Legion community

Legions now have expanded their assistance to all rst responders, including the local police, OPP, RCMP , Fire, EMS, and other front-line service people. We all say, “thank you for your service,” respectfully taking to heart that these are people who run towards danger as we ordinary citizens run away to safety. The Legion exists in support of those who sacrice.

Legions are facing the challenges of today. As the WB Legion joins the National Group, they are in the process of losing two Legions. A legion as a cheap drinking hole alone is not good enough. The major challenge the Wasaga Beach committee and its members have is to nd a younger group of members. Can the Legion survive without a youthful inux? The answer is up to the community, by joining and nding a way to contribute to making this legion a success.

Wasaga Beach's Marc Seguin, Daisy May Phillip, Gordon Montgomery, Leslie Hodgson, Kerri Montgomery, and Neil Smith have done so much to make this happen. Thank you.

The ofcial Opening Ceremony for Wasaga Beach Legion 05-645 will be held on Sunday May 26th, 2024, at the RexPlex's Oakview Room at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

On Sunday, May 26, The Pet Valu Walk for Guide Dogs will take to the streets of Wasaga Beach. Dog Guides are specially trained dogs that assist individuals in navigating their world with confidence and independence. The walk is a fundraising initiative that supports the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.

The goal of this national initiative is to raise $1.6 million for the Dog Guide programs. The fun and active walk is open to all ages and abilities, with participants encouraged to collect donations for the charity. Obviously, walking with the family pooch adds to the fun. With the help of Wasaga Beach residents, the goal is to transform lives from coast to coast.

The collaboration between the Wasaga Beach Lions Club and our local Pet Valu store is rewarding. Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG) is a national charity created by the Lions of Canada. Its mission is to empower Canadians with disabilities to navigate their world with confidence and independence by providing a Dog Guide at no cost and supporting them in their journey together. LFCDG is the national charitable partner of the Pet Valu family of stores, with Pet Valu being the title sponsor of Walk for Dog Guides. In addition to supporting the walk in such a significant way, the Pet Valu family is

Dog Guides' national feeding partner, providing their premium line of Performatrin dog food for all puppies, breeding dogs, and Dog Guides in training.

On Sunday, May 26th, join the local Wasaga Beach Walk for Dog Guides and help raise $1.6 million for our Super Heroes!

On April 17, the Lions Den at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex was buzzing with activity. It was another busy day for the volunteers of the Wasaga Beach chapter of Georgian Good Food Box (GGFB) as they prepared for the arrival of the delivery truck and the packing of hundreds of bags of “good food.” This day was special, as it was also celebrating the 20th Anniversary of this great local initiative, and the 10th year of GGFB packing here in Wasaga Beach.

Members of Council were on hand to congratulate and applaud the efforts of the many volunteers on this special day for the group. Cake and coffee were available as we learned more about the benefits enjoyed by so many, thanks to the dedicated volunteers who carefully select a variety of “good food” items and pack the bags to be distributed in the community. These bags (approx. 30 lbs each) can be purchased for an amazingly low price, thanks to the group's volunteers and the generous support of local suppliers and others in the

community, for just 21.00. The organization also provides free boxes, to fixed income families through the Food Bank, Saint Vincent de Paul, and Community Health Centre.

As this event took place during 'Volunteer Week,' Members of Council and others had even more reason to thank the many dedicated members of the group as some posed for a photo before getting to work packing the Good Food bags.

If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity for a monthly supply of 'Good Food,' please visit the informative website at www.ggfb.ca or call Loretta at 705-352-3555. Volunteers are always welcome to call to learn more about joining the group.

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary to Georgian Good Food Box!

As a result of proactive recruitment efforts by the Town, we welcome our newest family physician, Dr. Jacob Jeffrey McGavin, who will begin by taking over an existing family medicine practice in Wasaga Beach. This will ensure that over 750 residents continue to have access to a family doctor

In late 2024, Dr. McGavin plans to expand his practice to approximately 900 patients, meaning about 150 Wasaga Beach residents who do not currently have a family doctor will now have access to primary care.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. McGavin to our community. This is great news for the citizens of Wasaga Beach. Not only will 750 residents continue to have continuous care from a family doctor, but about 150 more will soon have access to a family doctor,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “This is further evidence that our plan is working.”

Live in Wasaga Beach and need a family doctor? There is no wait-list to join Dr. McGavin's patient roster. Residents who do not currently have a family doctor are encouraged to seek non-urgent care through the Wasaga Beach Medical Clinic at this time. To help ensure local residents who are most in need of a family physician get served rst, Dr. McGavin will be connecting directly with the clinic as soon as he is ready to begin accepting new patients and grow his practice.

Prior to a recent Council Meeting, the Council Chambers seemed a wee bit chaotic with members of the Fire Department, local business owners, committee members, Food Bank representatives, staff, and council mingling and chatting with many shared congratulatory handshakes and hugs.

Eventually, the group organized for a friendly photo-shoot in order to recognize the Wasaga Beach Fire Department, the Accessibility Advisory Committee, and Mike and Cheri Dopp, owners of Wasaga Beach Foodland, for their combined fundraising efforts for the local Ministerial Food Bank.

Adding up the $574.00 raised by the Accessibility Advisory Committee, the $2,917.00 collected by the Fire Department's 2023 seasonal Food and Toy Drive, and the generous donation of $2,909.00 from Mike and Cheri of Foodland, the large group, along with Council, presented a cheque for $6,400.00 to Christina and Brian of the Ministerial Food Bank in Wasaga Beach.

Congratulations to all!

In Wasaga Beach, we have a beautiful river that flows through town called the Nottawasaga River, aka 'The Notty'. Many people enjoy exploring it, but with this being an older-than-me community, not everyone can get out on the river So, I decided to create a YouTube mini-series where I take people down the river with me on a kayak. I try to showcase all of the awesome animals, scenery, and local businesses along this journey

The first video focuses on Willow Creek, a challenging and potentially dangerous part of the river system. Luckily, Free Spirit Tours offers guided tours through here. It's strongly recommended that you take at least one guide to avoid getting lost in the confusing Minesing Wetlands. Safety comes first, and you definitely don't want to necessitate a rescue helicopter (which can be costly). The views and animal sightings on this journey are spectacular. You can choose to disembark at Edenvale or continue, depending on your speed and energy levels. This trip typically takes around 6 hours, and I've done it three times in my life.

The second video is my favourite, featuring Jack's Lake (or should it be Jacque's Lake?). I love this segment because it's very scenic and easy. You depart from Klondike Park, pass under the bridge, and find yourself at this serene lake. On the return journey, the current assists you, making it a much quicker kayak trip, lasting around 2 hours or more depending on the wildlife sightings you pause for. Free Spirit Tours also offers guided tours here (feel free to ask for me as your guide), or you can simply rent a kayak from them. One highlight is attempting to locate the bald eagle's nest, which is roughly 6 to 8 feet in size.

The third video covers my least favourite section of the Nottawasaga River, where you paddle away from the bridge at Klondike Park. This stretch passes by houses and encounters motorized watercraft, often travelling at excessive speeds. Personally, I prefer to be away from such distractions when on the water. However, there are still some impressive sights along the way; you can admire the beautiful sand dunes, and if you're fortunate, you might even catch a glimpse of Skydive Wasaga participants descending. The best part is that you're carried by the current the entire way into town. This stretch of the river is also home to the epic 'Rockin' the River' event, where you can kayak with friends while enjoying live music from bands along the way, taking place on August 10th with Free Spirit Tours.

This river is home to a diverse array of wildlife that I've encountered, including river otters, bald eagles, beavers, numerous bird species, and fish, among others. I sincerely hope that you get the chance to experience it for yourself. If you'd like some company, don't hesitate to reach out.

To witness these encounters, visit my YouTube channel @JASONGEORGEPHOTOGRAPHY as I guide you through the experiences of observing beavers underwater, otters at play, and much more.

Until next time, stay safe, have fun, and immerse yourself in the wildlife!

Harnessing the Power of Pollinator Boulevards and Gardens to Combat Climate Change

In the face of climate change, we are called upon to embrace innovative solutions that not only mitigate its impacts but also nurture the planet back to health.Amidst this global challenge, the significance of pollinator boulevards and gardens emerges as a beacon of hope. These seemingly simple elements hold immense potential in combating climate change and fostering ecological resilience.

Pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and birds, play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem balance. However, their populations have been declining due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change itself. Establishing pollinator-friendly habitats such as boulevards and gardens can provide sanctuaries for these vital creatures. By offering diverse sources of nectar and pollen, as well as suitable nesting sites, these habitats support pollinator populations, thereby ensuring the continuation of essential ecosystem services like pollination.

Moreover, pollinator boulevards and gardens contribute to climate change mitigation through their role in carbon sequestration and temperature regulation. Green spaces, especially those rich in vegetation, act as carbon sinks, absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide and storing it in plant biomass and soil. This not only helps mitigate greenhouse gas emissions but also reduces the heat island effect in urban areas, thereby alleviating the impacts of rising temperatures.

Furthermore, the establishment of pollinator-friendly habitats promotes sustainable land management practices and fosters community engagement. These spaces serve as educational tools, raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation and inspiring individuals to take action in their own neighbourhoods. Additionally, they enhance urban aesthetics, town beautification, improve air quality, and provide recreational opportunities, enriching the quality of life for residents.

In March 2021, theTown of Wasaga Beach Council passed a motion to amend a by-law and implement a “Boulevard Planting Program”, the bylaw was amended on June 29, 2021.To read or download the full report see here: https://bit.ly/boulevard-planting

TheTown of Wasaga Beach also implemented a “No Mow May” program to help pollinators throughout public and private greenspaces; theTown does not enforceThe Clean-Yards By-Law and permits residents to allow all grass and weeds on their properties to grow more than 30cm for the entire month of May

We are encouraging a new initiative for theTown of Wasaga Beach to build a plan to create a more pollinator-friendly habitat to be certified as a Bee City, as several surrounding municipalities did.

Come and meet with WBCATto discuss at the Celebration of Spring Plant Sale, May 25th near the RecPlex Gazebo.

Incorporating pollinator boulevards and gardens into urban planning and landscaping strategies presents a tangible and effective means of addressing climate change at the local level. By harnessing the power of these ecosystems, communities can mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and cultivate a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.As we strive to navigate the complexities of a changing climate, let us not overlook the transformative potential of pollinators and the green spaces they inhabit.

Japanese donburi are hearty bowls of rice, veggies and meat, seafood or tofu. They are inherently pretty wholesome but we have upped the ante by filling them with whole grain brown rice, Omega-rich salmon and plenty of fresh vegetables to make an all in one meal.

1 cup brown sticky rice, rinsed

2 tbsp seasoned Rice vinegar

1 tsp sugar salt

1 tbsp olive oil

4- 4 oz portions of Atlantic Salmon

4 large eggs

2 tbsp soy sauce

2 tsp sesame oil

3 green onions

2 baby cucumbers halved lengthwise and sliced thinly

1 avocado, pitted and sliced

1 sheet of nori cut into 1 inch strips

2 tbsp pickled ginger, thinly sliced

Bring rice and 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil in a large saucepan. Stir and cover and reduce heat to low. Cook until the water is absorbed, about 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and let stand for 5 minutes.

Whisk together 1 tbsp vinegar, sugar and 1/2 tsp salt in a large bowl. Stir in rice until well coated. Spread rice evenly up and around side of bowl to cool. Set aside.

Lightly sprinkle fish with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in large non stick skillet over medium heat. Add fish, cook turning once ntil fish flakes easily when tested with fork, about 4- 6 minutes. Transfer to cutting board, halve each fillet lengthwise

Heat the same skillet over medium heat. Add eggs and cook until bottom is set about 1 and a half minutes, flip and cook until firm. Transfer to a cutting board and thinly slice.

Whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, and 1 tbsp vinegar in a small bowl and set aside.

Divide rice, salmon, eggs, green onions, cucumbers, avocado, nori, and pickled ginger among serving bowls. Drizzle with soy mixture, dividing evenly

You can swap out the veggies depending on what you happen to have in your fridge or freezer at the time – sliced radishes, shredded carrots, roasted cubed sweet potatoes, edamame and corn are all great options.

After the success of the inaugural Fest in 2023, we are glad to see the event return for a second year, this time taking over a much larger space at the GNE Fairgrounds (western border of Wasaga Beach).

The sights and sounds of a vibrant arcade is a symphony of excitement and nostalgia, sure to be enjoyed by all who attend this year's event. Visitors will be greeted by a kaleidoscope of ashing lights and vibrant colours, with the air electric with the buzz of pinball machines and arcade games whirring and the clatter of steel balls ricocheting off bumpers and ippers.

Organizers of the 2nd Annual Central Ontario Arcade & Pinball Fest are eager to welcome all to Wasaga Beach and its surrounding areas with their “Play by The Bay” tagline.

This year's larger show offers a ton of fun for all who enjoy, or perhaps enjoyed in the past, the thrill of playing the active and brightly lit machines, while also providing much more for those involved in the industry or the collection of vintage machines.

Machines, new and old, will be available for sale at the event. Sponsors Pinballrom and Pinball Medics are also offering pre-order discounts online with free delivery to the show on Saturday, June 1st for pick up. The Fest will boast a historical section with some antique and pre-war games, and other eras including 1950s woodrail games, Electromechanical games (EMs), Solid State games, DMD games, right into the modern era with recent releases. Several seminars presented by experts will also be offered during the show

Organizers are eager to have guests and participants enjoy the entire weekend in Wasaga Beach and take advantage of other fun local activities and the World's Longest Freshwater Beach while not hunched over their

favourite machines. The Saga Resort on Main Street is offering a 20% discount on any one-night booking, and 30% off the total of any booking of 2 nights or more for that weekend.

The 2nd Annual Central Ontario Arcade & Pinball Fest welcomes the public on Saturday, June 1st from 10 am until 7 pm, while the setup day for vendors and those bringing games is Friday, May 31st from 2 pm until 9 pm. The new expanded venue is Exhibition Hall, GNE Grounds, 2220 Fairgrounds Road North. Admission for the public is just $20 per person (cash only at the door on the day of the show), with kids 10 and under admitted for free. All games are set to 'Free Play' and the fun is included in the price of admission. Great food will also be available at the giant “Jerk It Up” BBQ onsite.

We look forward to this fun and active event that will certainly bring back memories of the Wasaga Beach arcades of the past. The noise and excitement will create a sense of camaraderie among players, collectors, and experts, bonded by their shared love for this timeless game. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a casual player, this festival will offer an immersive experience that transports you to a world where skill and chance collide in a whirlwind of fun and excitement.
