Definitions of an "icon" include; someone who has made a tangible difference and positive influence on a measurable scale. A symbol of something significant or admirable. A model of passion, commitment and dedication. A person that epitomizes for many people a value, an era, a community.

John was indeed an icon!

After a courageous battle John G.Hutchinson died on December 22, 2023 at the age of 76, at Campbell House Hospice, with family by his side.

John, of Wasaga Beach, was born in Toronto to parents Jack and Margaret Hutchinson and sisters Lesley Weslock and Nancy Hutchinson.

Loving father of Cole (Jane) and Todd (Ashley). Cherished Papa of Cade, Solaira, Will and Madeline. Fondly remembered by his extended family and many, many friends. John was predeceased by his parents, sister Nancy and wife Pat. A young John started his career on the Toronto Stock Exchange, but soon after, moved up to Wasaga Beach to operate the Dyconia Resort Hotel, known to most as "The Dyc", for his parents who had purchased the Dyconia Villa (a seasonal lodge with cabins) in 1952. All of John's summers had already been spent at the family owned business, with him becoming popular as a teen as a high speed, barefoot waterskier on the Nottawasaga River. As a full time business operator, John quickly fell in love with the hospitality industry and dedicated his life to the business and the desire for people to have a great time while visiting Wasaga Beach.

His life at The Dyc instilled a love of community and a profound dedication to the industry that not only created the original Village of Wasaga Beach, but remains our one and only industry today. His love for Wasaga Beach fuelled his passion and he never stopped promoting our town as a key vacation destination and more.

John's dedication to providing a great atmosphere of service, fun and entertainment at the Dyconia was enjoyed by everyone who visited, with so many of us becoming "regulars". Under John's watch, The 'Dinner Bell Lounge' always offered the best meals in the area, the 'Undertow Lounge' had some of the best entertainment. The main lounge, known as 'The Hutch', was the place to enjoy a beverage, meet friends & family, and of course speak with John to catch up on everything and anything that was happening in The Beach... good or bad! John was always sure to tell the story, and he could really tell a story!

John sold the Dyconia property in 2008 and enjoyed his much deserved retirement by spending time with family & friends, boating, talking politics and vacationing with Pat at their favourite spot, Lauderdale By the Sea. There are far too many memories and great Wasaga Beach stories generated and told by John at the Dyconia, that continued after the resort was sold, to even try to share here. All of them are fond and special to me, as I'm sure they are to the many who experienced and enjoyed their time spent with our friend John Hutchinson.

We are told by family and close friends that cremation has taken place.

Being planned is a "Hutch size" celebration of life to be held in the spring with details to follow. I am sure that this event will be very well attended and certainly will be a gathering of story tellers, all relating to the many fun & entertaining times spent with a true Wasaga Beach icon. Rest in peace John. You will be missed by many for years to come.

Fernie Angeloni, Fred Cini, Andy Feethan It's been 20 years since The Wasaga Beach Cruisers first embellished the halls of Performance World Custom Car Show in March of 2004. The club collected an arm full of awards and had a total of five cars entered in the competition. Fred Cini won first place and a Grand Champion Award for his '34 Ford. Andy Feetham was runner up with a similar vehicle and Fernie Angeloni was a runner up for his '34 Ford. Rick Seip's '65 Corvette Roadster was runner up and Gary Ginn was runner up with his '63 Corvette Split window Pro Street. What a great start to a legendary club at Performance World Custom Car Show, now called Motorama. On top of that the club got first place for best club appearance overall.

“After a long winter this particular custom car show is a great opportunity to re-introduce car club enthusiasts to the Wasaga Beach Cruisers and the Town of Wasaga Beach in general, as a unique car community” said Rick Seip of that 2004 event.

The show in 2004 was just the beginning of a long relationship of the Wasaga Beach Cruisers with the Town of Wasaga Beach. From humble weekly night meetings at the Foodland Plaza to the now world famous Cruisers Corners at the Stonebridge Gazebo, where 200 plus cars meet every Monday night throughout the season, starting in May and running until Labour Day weekend.

I will have more about the club in the next issue. The Wasaga Beach Cruisers have a unique relationship with the town and the local residents, and we are going to be involved in some of the many activities the Town is planning for Wasaga Beach's 50th anniversary of being a town this year. Still in the planning stages at the time of this article but stay tuned as I will keep you posted so you can join in the fun. Visit wasagabeachcruisers.ca for more updates and member information.

In mid-December the Wasaga Beach Fire Department welcomed seven new volunteer firefighters to the staff. After an intense recruitment competition, and more than eight weeks of orientation and training, this group is ready to serve the citizens & visitors in Wasaga Beach.

The event welcoming the new grads was well attended by the recruits, their friends & families, current career and volunteer firefighters as well as Mayor Brian Smith and Councillor Richard White.

The group started a modified training program in early October which they recently completed. All recruits are residents of Wasaga Beach and are proud and eager to serve their community. Three of the group (Hayden, Meagan and Dylan) served as co-op students with the department while they were in high school. With the addition of graduating group, the Fire Department now boasts 15 volunteer firefighters. www.beach B O O S T E R .com

Home Depot Collingwood donated & delivered a live tree, with lights & stand for the children to decorate.

It was an early Sunday morning mid-December, when the eager children arrived at Wasaga Beach's Canadian Tire store, escorted by jolly OPP officers from Huronia West Detachment. Joining the police officers, Wasaga Beach Fire Fighters and members of the Wasaga Beach Municipal Law Enforcement and Property Standards Department also had the privilege of pairing up with students from the local area schools to participate in the annual and festive "Shop with a Cop" event.

The fun did not stop after the shop, as a bus was generously donated to transport the children from Canadian Tire, to Fire Station One, where Fire Chief Williams and Deputy Chief Bell and crew were preparing an amazing pancake breakfast for the hungry bunch of young shoppers. The Fire Hall was a busy place with everyone enjoying the decorations, music, activities and tree decorating.

The "Shop with a Cop" event is designed to provide gifts and a fun-filled experience to elementary & high school children and their families. Each school in Wasaga Beach, Township of Springwater and Township of Clearview was asked to select two students to participate in the event.

The kids had their picture taken with Santa Claus, faces painted, made holiday greeting cards for their families, decorated a Christmas tree, made special cookies and ornaments, played with an OPP K9 dog, and explored fire trucks. While everyone was enjoying this festive and action-packed morning, all their gifts were wrapped, tagged, and prepared in a gift bag by volunteers for the kids to take home.

This year there were over 20 students participating. Each student was given the opportunity to spend time with an OPP member, Fire Fighter or Bylaw Officer, while they completed their shopping.They were able to shop for gifts for their families, friends & pets, plus pick out something special just for themselves. Every shopper was provided a sum of money that had been graciously donated by local businesses, clubs, and private sponsors.

It was a fun-filled day for everyone involved, and the memories will be cherished for years to come. We look forward to next year's event as I'm sure another bunch of local kids will again enjoy the experience of shopping with a cop and the fun at the Fire Hall.

The entire shopping experience was overseen with the helpful and fun loving staff of our local Canadian Tire store, as owner Kenn Voss made sure all participants were having fun and receiving special Christmas cheer. Photos by Beach BOOSTER Media Group Each Christmas (with an unfortunate break during COVID) Dance by Design School of Dance in Wasaga Beach celebrates the Holiday Season by inviting seniors from within our community and surrounding areas to experience a festive traditional English High Tea Brunch held in the welcoming and decorated Dance Studio on River Road West.

It started in 2015 with a small group of guests and quickly grew to over 20 guests that now come each year to share in each others company. Everyone looks forward to this elegant event, and dresses in the most elegant, or perhaps festive attire. Dance by Design owner Sonia Metheral, the faculty, family and dancers know that helping at least one person during the holidays by them not being alone at this special time, can be the very best gift of all for many.

This special event was held just before Christmas at the Stonebridge Art Gallery, and was well attended by those eager to taste and learn more about the festive dishes prepared.

As guests arrived at the studio, they were greeted by Sonia and team, and shown to a long fancy table arranged fashionably with fine china. Fresh fruit, assorted sandwiches, delicious desserts and coffee, tea and hot chocolate were served, as all enjoyed the festive Christmas music that added to the festive theme. The studio was decorated elegantly including a beautiful Christmas tree, candlelight and fireplace, and was surrounded with the dancers who just love to share their time with the special guests.

We thank Sonia and the entire Dance by Design family for continuing this great tradition that is enjoyed by so many seniors and friends in our community.

Gwyn Beaver and Xan Lazaridis collaborated to bring the first of its kind festive event to Wasaga Beach, by serving five dishes from each of the two regions to a sold out crowd.

Everyone was made merry, happy and bright while sampling savoury and sweet fare, including Jambalaya, Corn Bread, Stuffed Grape Vine Leaves and Vasilopita (New Year's Cake).

Each chef gave a talk on the origins of the dishes after everyone was served. It was "a true cultural immersion", said Gwyn. The two chefs thank everyone who attended and added to the festive community event.

Special thanks to the Stonebridge Art Gallery where the event was held and Canadian Tire Wasaga Beach for donating a Christmas tree that was decorated by the chefs.

The chefs are cooking up their next cultural event called Carnival Cuisine with live music on Saturday, March 16th, 2024 to celebrate carnival time with traditional Lenten foods from Mardi Gras and Apokries. During the former council's term, the “Integrity Commissioners” (ICs) who were taking the word of the mayor and CAO as truth, slammed a Wasaga Beach Councillor for doing what was right, then council hit him with with unwarranted sanction after sanction.

We now know that the information was/is highly questionable. It was the town, not residents that initiated all of the complaints. Remember, the town is also the entity that paid the ICs with taxpayer's money, resulting in a waste of money on politically motivated attacks!

Perhaps it's time to right this wrong, as we look forward to a rewarding year of truth and transparency within our municipal government.

In late November, a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Event took place at the Gardens of Wasaga Beach Retirement Residnce. The festive event was attended by over 500 people who were eager to find out more about the new building, now a part of the Bayside Centre (Foodland Plaza) on River Road West.

Gardens of Wasaga Beach is a beautiful “community” that has over 100 modern suites in various sizes, offering something for everyone. The Grand Opening event included tours of the entire residence that boasts state of the art facilities providing health & wellness and amazing recreational opportunities, including a theatre for movie nights and more. Attendees enjoyed the sampling of delicious cuisine prepared by the Garden's chef from the modern kitchen facility.

Live entertainment added to the fun and social event, as residents, visitors, staff and management mingled in the lobby, comfortable dining room and the bar area

that overlooks the wide, welcoming outdoor patio. Mayor Brian Smith, members of Council, town staff and the Wasaga Beach Fire Department enjoyed being a part of the event as this new facility, its staff and residents were welcomed to Wasaga Beach. The Gardens of Wasaga Beach employs over 50 people in various rewarding positions.

Once visitors completed the tours of suites, amenities and recreational areas, the consensus was that The Gardens of Wasaga Beach really does have everything that you could hope for in a first class retirement residence.

Christina is joined by members of the Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee, her husband Brian, Mayor Brian Smith & Council as she is recognized as Wasaga Beach Senior of the Year for 2023.

In December, Community Partners of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, spoke on behalf of the Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee (AFCAC).

Each year the AFCAC coordinates a Senior of the Year Award to recognize an outstanding senior citizen and puts forward this individual to be recognized as one of Wasaga's Finest Citizens.

Christina Armstrong was named Wasaga Beach Senior of the Year for 2023, a well deserved recognition of her many years of tireless volunteerism in our community. This special award is in addition to the Ontario Senior of the Year Award she received at the June Seniors Expo.

Christina Armstrong is certainly no stranger to this community and is well-known and respected for her many volunteer hours and bottomless heart for those in need who are the clients of the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank. With the seemingly constant support and help from her husband Brian, Christina's volunteer hours extend beyond the last 5 years that are reviewed for the award, and that is to be commended. She has contributed literally many thousands of hours and has worked for the Wasaga Beach Foodbank since its inception over 13 years ago. Christina has been scheduling over 60 volunteers, phoning, reporting and helping with clients, while managing the daily operations through her expert leadership. She's been a constant representative for the Foodbank, acting as an advocate and speaking to students, church groups and service clubs. www.beach B O O S T E R .com

In addition to the many hours spent with the Foodbank, Christina has also volunteered at the Wasaga Beach United Church for 15 years where she organizes fundraising, prepares food services, acts as a greeter and identifies children and families in need for backpacks, hampers and donations at Easter and Christmas. She's also a reliable helper at special events and gatherings of her church community.

Christina has inspired many people to do better and is a respected leader. She is incredibly dedicated & caring.

Christina Armstrong, we thank you for your leadership, dedication and continued contributions that help improve the lifestyle of others in Wasaga Beach.

On December 11th, the provincial government announced a new plan to get schools built faster across Ontario, which includes requiring school boards to have land purchased and detailed timelines and budgets ready when they apply to the province to build. The province is also changing the rules when it comes to how school boards will deal with surplus properties on their rosters, with the new rules effective Dec. 31.

School boards receive considerable funding and of course to me, its a bureaucratic mess that should be amalgamated into one system. It really needs to be overhauled and of course Simcoe County District School Board says the funding is not enough, but let's face it, we know there is a ton of waste & stupid moves like the above mentioned, that happened with the Sunnidale project that cost the taxpayers millions.

This is a good thing! If we look at the example of what happened here regarding the delay in building the Sunnidale Public School which was approved back in 2018, and just now being built, you realize how broken the system is. Firstly, in my opinion, the school board should never get involved with developers that are in the planning stages of a new subdivision. Waiting for them to get their project off the ground can delay a new school while building costs escalate and children suffer the consequences of being bused out of their own town which is what happened here, with our very young students .

Imagine, it took five years after approval to see it start and 7 million more (50%) of taxpayer dollars. A folly of errors indeed.

The move by the Ford government to make school boards more accountable by purchasing the land and having a plan in motion before applying, is what is needed to get the shovels in the ground sooner. Streamlining the schools to be architecturally designed similarly, saves time & hundreds of thousands of dollars. Most apparent, don't buy land where you are at the mercy of the developer and its project. And last but not least, work with the local municipal council to make sure everyone is working together for the betterment of the children. Stop with this arrogant self centered attitude that seems to permeate school boards and their management that suggest they know best. They obviously don't!

The above resolution was passed by our town council on December 14, 2023. It was written in support of a similar resolution by a neighbouring municipality. It is not normal for Municipal politicians to insert themselves into school board business. Why is this action necessary? Apparently, our county trustees decided to break from the tradition of having police provide our children with wellestablished safety programs due to complaints against the police. It is hard to imagine that such complaints could not be resolved without doing away with an essential service provided by our police organizations.

Shockingly, we learn that the school board was presented with a report at their December meeting that violent incidents were up by 30% in 2023. Could there be a connection between the unsafe environment in our public schools and the absence of a police presence? Trustee Mike Foley, who asked for the report several months earlier stated that he has spoken to teachers who are retiring early due to the violence and referred to a school climate survey in which 20% of elementary students and 25% of secondary students stated that they did not feel safe at school. It is bad enough that so many of our local children are bussed to other towns to receive their education, but knowing that they are going into unsafe environments makes it especially concerning. Bravo to trustee Foley for shedding light on this matter. Hopefully, the push-back on him by political opponents will be muted by a strong public response.

School boards are required by the Ministry of Education to produce annually a detailed report about violent incidents in their schools. Here is what our kids and their teachers may have seen or experienced at school: 68 incidents of

possessing a weapon, including a firearm, 49 physical assaults requiring medical attention, 19 hate/bias-motivated occurrences and 21 incidents where a weapon was used to cause bodily harm. Is it any wonder that students feel unsafe? Is this enough to get the trustees who voted to remove the School Resource Officers from our schools reconsider their decision? Let us hope so.

Our beach kids are especially vulnerable because they all attend large, over-crowded schools and many of them do so outside of their community. It is time for our school board to take a serious look at the impact of large schools on student safety. Our elected trustees also need to revisit the board's decision to limit police presence in county schools. Our local trustee, Mike Foley, deserves our gratitude for digging into the issue of school violence. The work of our own council in calling for a police presence in our schools is a timely and important intervention. The students in Simcoe County deserve strong leadership from trustees.

Our beach kids have the right to be educated in a healthy, safe environment in their own community.

The Environmental Toll of Road Salt In the frigid winter months, road salt is spread on our icy highways and streets. While this deicing method is essential for ensuring safe travel, the environmental impact of road salt has become a growing concern. The extensive use of salt is taking a toll on our ecosystems and waterways.

About five million tons of road salts are used in Canada each year.

The sodium chloride in the applied salt dissolves into sodium and chloride ions and then makes its way into the environment and into our freshwater systems, our rivers and lakes. Elevated salt levels harm aquatic life, disrupting the delicate balance of ecosystems; fish, insects, and other aquatic organisms suffer from physiological stress and reproductive challenges.

Moreover, the infiltration of road salt into the soil poses a threat to vegetation. Salt can disrupt nutrient absorption and soil structure, leading to the decline of plant health. This is particularly concerning for roadside flora, and also contributes to soil erosion and the degradation of habitat for wildlife.

First was getting a haircut, with the promise of keeping the haircut, performed by three boys who are members of the JGP Prowl group, if we were to meet the fundraising goal. After seeing the “interesting” results of the haircut, perhaps I'm rewarded that I did not have to keep my promise and maintain the cut, although my team mates at my regular hockey game were shocked, as were the parents of the the hair-cutting kids, the boys seemed to have a good laugh and we did raise some funds. Following the haircut, I did Holiday Photos at PetValu in Wasaga Beach, and raised more money to help the animals at GTHS. So, thank you to those who donated to these fun events. Also, a big thank you again to everyone who came out to my paint night fundraiser to help me get to India. It helped put a dent in that first instalment. I'm excited for this fast approaching 25 day adventure to India to find lions, leopards, tigers, and the elusive snow leopard. The trip, that will finish with sunset and sunrise at the Taj Mahal, will be truly special as I'm supposed to do a few presentations for the locals about wildlife of the world and some of my experiences. Again, thanks to everyone who has helped me.

This India trip, if I return, will hopefully help me complete a couple of books in the “Going Deeper with Jason George” series that I'm currently working on.

Each book focuses on a specific animal including Red Fox, Moose, Cheetah and Owls are currently available. I'm now working on a book about penguins and then soon on a leopard, lion, loon, beaver, and deer books.

I'm dyslexic and didn't say my first word until I was four, but I've been working on a side project with my friend Kandise to try and help others that learn differently, as I did.

We currently have some books available with a website. Also, we are releasing an app called “Learning This Ability” with 3 games that feature fun with spelling, math and animal recognition. Find more information at www.jayandkay.ca .

Road salt has indirect effects on human health: elevated salt concentrations in drinking water sources can pose health risks, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions. Protect your pets! Road salts are very toxic for dogs and cats walking on streets and collecting salt on their paws.

Furthermore, the corrosion caused by salt accelerates the deterioration of infrastructure such as bridges and roads, necessitating costly repairs and maintenance, not to mention rusting our cars, trucks and trailers.

Deicers come in several forms: Ÿ Rock salt (sodium chloride) is the most used but contains cyanide as an anticaking agent that can be toxic to underwater life and is the most harmful for plants due to its high chloride levels. Ÿ Calcium chloride is considered a better choice than rock salt because it does not contain cyanide. However, it can also harm plants because of chloride. Calcium chloride costs about three times more than rock salt, but you only need to use approximately one-third as much. Ÿ Magnesium chloride is considered the least toxic deicing salt because it contains less chloride, making it safer for plants and animals. Ÿ Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) is considered the best choice for safely melting ice. It is less toxic than deicers containing chloride but can cost considerably more.

Efforts are underway in Ontario to address the environmental impact of road salt. Initiatives include the use of alternative deicing methods, such as sand and brine solutions, as well as improved application techniques to minimize excess salt use. Additionally, public awareness campaigns aim to educate residents and commercial property owners, especially big box stores and parking lots, on responsible salt application during winter.

The Town of Wasaga Beach is using a screened winter sand as per Ontario provincial standards and a Cargill ClearLane® enhanced deicer which is a pre-wet sodium chloride, not the worst for the environment but it is still 94% sodium chloride so certainly not the best either, especially when it comes to the impact on the Nottawasaga River and Georgian Bay. Many municipalities are working to address the environmental issues, and the higher cost associated to the use of a more eco-friendly but more expensive deicer such as calcium magnesium or even more natural alternatives such as beet juice or cheese brine. This is the way to go.

As Ontario and our municipalities strive to strike a balance between road safety and environmental sustainability, the reduction of road salt usage and the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives are crucial steps toward preserving the province's natural ecosystems for future generations.

The stage is set, and the newly minted Wasaga Beach Public Library is about to embark on a musical journey that promises to captivate the hearts and ears of the community. With grand opening celebrations beginning February 10, the library is kicking off a series of four concerts, geared towards older adults, that showcase a diverse range of musical genres.

The inaugural performance on Valentine's Day will feature the Tavares Jazz Band, setting a soulful and sultry tone. The library invites residents and music enthusiasts alike to immerse themselves in an evening of captivating jazz melodies with a touch of Latin flair. The Tavares Jazz Band promises to provide a memorable soundtrack for the library's official cultural introduction to the community.

Following this kickoff, the musical odyssey continues with more sensational acts. On February 25th, the Kenn Lewis Caribbean Band will transport audiences to the rhythmic paradise of the Caribbean, filling the building with upbeat vibes and the melodic sounds of the steel pan drum. Then, on March 6th, Eric Kidd will take the stage, bringing classic Country tunes and toetapping favourites to the library, creating an atmosphere of pure musical delight.

But the symphony doesn't end there. On March 17th, the library is proud to present a special performance titled "Barbershop Galore" featuring The Dukes of Harmony and the Barrie County Chordsmen. The harmonious acapella melodies of barbershop music will echo through the building, showcasing the diverse range of acoustic palettes in this cultural extravaganza.

All concerts are free to attend, but with limited seating, the library encourages attendees to pre-register and check in at the door with their volunteers upon arrival. Registration is available online by visiting wasagabeachpubliclibrary.ca/seniors-concerts.

To ensure a spot, separate registrations are requested in advance for each concert. Light refreshments will be provided during a 15-minute intermission, creating a social atmosphere for attendees to mingle and share their musical experiences.

4 Tbsp parsley chopped 4 large cloves of garlic chopped or minced 1 medium onion diced Salt and pepper to taste 2 cups spinach chopped 1.5 - 2 lb flank steak butterflied 1 tbsp butter or vegetable oil 1 1/2 cup Provolone cheese sliced zest from one lemon Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Butterfly the steak. If you are not sure about this step ask your butcher to do it for you.

Cover the steak between plastic wrap and pound it thin to the point that you can roll it, but not so thin that you end up tearing the flesh.

Add salt and pepper to both sides of the meat.

In a saute pan fry up the onion and garlic and set aside to cool.

Layer the cheese over the beef leaving 1 inch border along the edge. Put your chopped spinach and cooled onions and garlic on top of the spinach. Add your grated zest of lemon Starting from the end closest to you, began rolling up tightly. Tie pinwheels with kitchen twine, toothpicks or skewers to keep them from falling apart. With a sharp knife slice the beef between the twine. You should have about 8 pinwheels.

Add vegetable oil to a cast iron skillet over medium high heat. Once hot add the stuffed flank steaks and brown each side for about 2-3 minutes then pop them into the oven for about 5-10 minutes.

Temperature of the beef rolls are done when the meat thermometer reads 125 for rare and 160 is well done. I usually cook mine until the temp reads 138. This is perfect when finished with a Balsamic Red wine reduction.

This simple but elegant dish is easy to make and requires only a few ingredients.

Delicious with a garden salad or with potatoes or rice. I have included a recipe for a Mushroom and Red Wine Reduction that goes perfectly with this recipe.

Balsamic Red Wine Reduction 1 Cup balsamic vinegar 1 cup red wine 2 tablespoons sugar Combine in a large pot and cook on medium heat until reduced by at least 2/3. Adjust the sugar and serve over grilled meat. Yield is about 1/2 to 3/4 cup.

In the pan that you used to brown your steaks sautee about 8 oz of mushrooms in about a teaspoon of butter and a touch of salt. Add the Balsmic reduction and cook for about 2 minutes. Serve over the Rolled Flank steak pinwheels.

Scan to book your visit

The Collingwood General and Marine Hospital's (CGMH) emergency department is a busy place on any given day. To help streamline the emergency visit process for those with coughs, cold symptoms and minor limb injuries, CGMH launched a pilot project in November, that will allow these patients to book their emergency department visit in advance.

The pilot project allows patients who need to be assessed and treated for minor ailments to book a same-day or next-day arrival time at the hospital's emergency department. Five arrival times will be scheduled daily between 8:00 - 9:15 a.m., Monday to Friday, as part of the initial pilot.

“The population in the South Georgian Bay region has grown significantly over the past three years, along with the volume of patients who are presenting at our emergency department. Because many of the individuals who have moved to the region do not have access to a family physician, it's important that we continue to pursue innovative ways to ensure access to high quality, timely care when patients need it,” says Mike Lacroix, CGMH President and CEO. In order to book an arrival time, patients begin by answering questions online related to their symptoms and injury, and any potential exclusions, such as bleeding, loss of consciousness, head, neck or back injuries. Should they meet the criteria, patients can then proceed with booking an arrival time. However, should arrival times be full, anyone who is experiencing a health emergency should continue to come to the hospital's emergency department.

Recognizing the importance of healthcare access for those in Simcoe County, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre's Emergency Department created and launched this booking system initiative in May of 2023. Data collected from CGMH's pilot will be included in RVH's research study on the program's efficacy.

As part of the pilot project, patients will be asked to complete an anonymous survey, emailed to them post- appointment, to gather patient feedback to make future enhancements and potentially expand the number of assessment spots in the future.

“The goal of this pilot is to increase patient access, improve the patient experience and grow the pilot to include more arrival times for lower acuity items, while preventing overcrowding at the busiest times of day," says Dr. Greg Devet, CGMH Chief of Emergency Medicine.

Young student Levi Nicol being screened by Lion Chris Gennings The Eye See…Eye Learn® program, administered by the Ontario Association of Optometrists, is available to children born in 2018 and 2019 that are in any junior or senior kindergarten program.

Vision screening is provided to the eligible students, and if required, the program will provide one pair of glasses per child courtesy of participating optometrists and corporate partners, Onesight EssilorLuxottica Foundation Canada and Modern Optical Canada. The frames are fashionable and are made with high quality and impact resistant poly-carbonate lenses. The estimated value of each pair of glasses is over $350.

Recently, the Wasaga Beach Lions Club completed the Vision Screening of all eligible Junior Kindergarten students in Wasaga Beach. As a result of the free screening, 10% of the students received a letter recommending them to visit a local optometrist who can provide them with free glasses.

The screening of the local students were conducted using the Plusoptix machine. It tests for the following conditions: ·

Anisometropia - compares refraction of both eyes

Astigmatism - checks corneal irregularities

·

Hyperopia - checks farsightedness

·

Myopia - checks nearsightedness

·

Corneal reflexes - checks symmetric eye alignment

·

Anisocoria - compares pupil sizes of both eyes

The Wasaga Beach Lions volunteered over 60 hours to fulfill this program. This helps the club meet the challenge of Helen Keller who challenged Lions in 1925 to help those with vision problems around the world.

The results of this year's Regional Silver Stick competition were very rewarding, as we applaud two local Wasaga Stars teams on their rise to the top to win their divisions.

Congratulations to the Wasaga Stars U11 Representative team and the U13 Local League team! Both teams of enthusiastic youth, will be travelling to Pelham & Forest Ontario, for their chance to win on the international scene this month.

In 1958, hockey enthusiast Jack Kinsella set up a friendly game between Ottawa Ontario's and Potsdam New York's Peewee & Bantam teams, now known as U13 & U15, with the goal of fostering the game of hockey and goodwill between the two countries. The Silver Stick motto remains, “citizenship & international goodwill through hockey”.

In early December, Wasaga Beach Minor Hockey once again hosted the Regional Silver Stick Tournament, with this being the last time the tournament was held at the old Wasaga Stars Arena. Currently there are 28 Canadian and 12 American Regional competitions, with the goal of participating teams to be a part of the International Silver Stick competitions. 48 teams took part in the regional event held over four weekends here in The Beach.

The event is coveted as likely the most elite tournament minor hockey kids will play in, and the participants are engaged in the official opening ceremonies with a parade of champions, a exchange of team pins and the opportunity to meet players from all over Canada and perhaps from North America.

At a recent Town Council meeting in Council Chambers, representatives made a presentation to council and staff, with the help of some representation from the two winning Wasaga Stars teams. Congratulations and a message of thanks and encouragement was given by Mayor Smith and others on council, and it was decided that the town would support these two teams by covering the entry fee for an upcoming tournament, plus the purchase of the Wasaga Stars pins that will be distributed at events. Support for future winning teams was also promised.

Congratulations and best of luck to the winning Wasaga Stars teams.

I asked my wife, "Where do you want to go for our anniversary?" She said, "Somewhere I have never been!" I suggested; "How about the kitchen?"

A concerned wife called her husband during his drive home from Collingwood: "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Hwy 26, please be careful! " Herman said, "It's not just one car. There's hundreds of them!"
