Hall of Fame Friday night, February 7, 2020 was a special night for Matt Terrell and his family. Matt was inducted into the IATCCC Track and Field Hall of Fame! The following is an excerpt from the evenings program at the induction banquet…

Matt Terrell Ben Davis High School Matt Terrell was born in Champaign, Illinois, and moved to Indiana at the age of 11. He didn’t get into the sport of track and field until after seeing his older brother running on the junior high team and he wanted to prove that he could also run and be somewhat good.

Eighth grade was his first competitive season indoors. He can recall his first 200-meter race indoors like it was yesterday and remembers that it seemed a long way to the finish. The coaches yelled at him to cut in and he couldn’t hear so he looked around while continuing to run. He finished first and everyone was amazed that he was able to win after looking around at the coaches!

The following outdoor season was a success, gaining fundam e n t a l s a n d a d d i t i o na l skills. He didn’t really fall in love with track until his freshman high school season. After meeting with Ben Davis varsity Coach Mike Davidson, he knew he wanted to be a part of something greater than himself. He asked Coach Davidson on the

first day of practice how he could attain varsity status and, after the seemingly long list was described, Matt was determined. A varsity sprinter was injured during spring break and Matt was selected to take his place. That day, he ran varsity and went on to win the state 200-meter championship three years in a row and the 100-meter championship his

onships in the 100 meters and the 4x100 relay. He continues his career coaching at an Ohio high school and also runs an extermination business.

I hold Michael Johnson in the highest regard, due to the fact that he came into everyone of his competitions with a strong mentality, which allowed him to win his races before they even started.

The MISSION of the Ben Davis High School Track and Field Team, a family of stellar young men, dedicated and caring coaches, and unheralded support personnel, is to conquer the challenges of competition in track and field so as to gain the ability to conquer the challenges of life.

We will come together as a team united, with an expectation to rise above all others. We will set high goals and achieve them by going beyond the breaking point. We will find within ourselves that “FIRE� that differentiates us from the rest.

We will love and respect each other, and carry that respect towards opponents, officials and authority.

We will utilize our resources to continually improve ourselves spiritually, academically and athletically, understanding that service is our purpose. As our visibility increases, so does our leadership skills. We will be positive role models for our future Giants.

In building on the championship tradition laid down before us, we will plan, prepare, and compete for the spirit that guides us, maximizing our efforts to show the appreciation for the talents for which we have been blessed.

Ultimately, through passion, discipline, desire and heart, we will CONQUER INDIANA and beyond.
