With Coronavirus getting an ever increasing foothold in the UK, the magazine is a bit of a strange one this April. You will see a lot of the usual events missing or cancelled this month. Where there is still some doubt I have left them in and I will let you all know on our Facebook page as soon as I am aware so please join up to the Facebook site if you haven’t already. (Brinkworth and Dauntsey Outlook).

The Brinkworth Parish Council and Dauntsey Parish Council are both trying to ensure that if any help is needed in the community it can be provided. There is an article in the magazine with contact numbers to call for help or if you want to volunteer. If you know of anyone who is vulnerable or may need help as perhaps they are on their own, please use the contact numbers to let us know. The aim here is not to invade anyone’s privacy nor does anyone need to know any details but it will enable someone to get in touch with them to ask if they need anything and to let them know what contact numbers to call if they do need help. I have been amazed at how many people and how quickly people volunteered in Brinkworth to help be part of a support network. Also, inside the magazine is a list of local government (NHS etc) numbers and links provided by Wiltshire Council.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? Strange things have happened, like never before. (Bob Dylan) With all that is going on, firstly with the flooding and now the Coronavirus, we may well be asking the very same question.

Some of our older readers will remember the song called “What’s it all about, Alfie?”

It’s a great question and one that is often asked particularly when troubled times come upon us.

What is life all about?

What makes life worth living?

The singer Jessie J answered with, “It’s not about the money money money, we don’t need your money money money, we just wanna make the world dance …”.

If she’s right, I’m doomed to a life of misery because my dance skills are non-existent.

Thankfully, she’s wrong!

Could the Hokey Cokey song really be correct?

“You do the Hokey Cokey and you turn around, and that’s what it’s all about.”

No, I don’t think so.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism said the chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him for ever. The Lord Jesus said, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17: 3). Perhaps all this is a gentle reminder as to who is sovereign?

With Easter almost upon us, it’s wonderful to be reminded that Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection happened and on that basis we too can have life... to the full.

Taken together, we can see that it is God Himself who makes life worth living. He is what it’s all about. It is a life that is on a different plane to anything we could ever have experienced without Christ in our lives, an abundant life full of joy and focused on Almighty God and His Son. Can there be a more satisfying life than one which has God as our Father (Eph. 1: 5) and the Lord Jesus Christ as our brother (Heb. 2: 11)?

Event cancellations due to COVID-19 Youth Clubs | All-Age Service I SMS There will be a virtual Bible reading & Prayer Meeting by Google Meet @ 8pm Wednesday Following the Government’s announcement this afternoon, we’ve decided that we should cancel all services apart from the Remembrance (communion) service until further notice.

The elderly, and those with underlying health conditions, are most vulnerable to the serious effects of COVID-19, so we wish to minimise the spread of the virus.

Many who attend our services are young & healthy, but we want to act responsibly out of love for the elderly and the sick in our wider families and communities.

With social distancing being strongly recommended, and evidence showing us how repeated public interactions can quickly spread the virus and place a massive strain on health services, we have decided to close our community events & gatherings as of today, 17th March 2020, until further notice.

We know this will be a disappointment for some of you, and means a loss of valuable connection with others. We are available to chat with by phone/Messenger/WhatsApp if you are feeling anxious and want someone to talk with. We will also try to offer practical support to our friends and neighbours, especially those in self-isolation. Let us know if you have urgent needs you think we may be able to help with.

If you were surprised by the amount of water and the flooding along the Great Somerford road recently then don’t forget to check out the following GOV.UK website when it next rains… https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/station/3030 This site gives you an almost live feed from the monitoring station in Old Sodom Lane and shows when flooding may occur from Dauntsey Brook. If you change the end digits 3030 to 3419 this will show the status of Brinkworth Brook.

Flooding plans are always on the Dauntsey Parish Council meeting agenda and they are lucky to retain Cllr Nic Puntis. Despite the fact he now lives in Lacock, Nic has done a lot of work with local farmers, WIltshire Council and the Highways Agency over the years to make sure the culverts under the M4 and ditches are maintained and not forgotten about.

Believe to Achieve! “Roots will grow down into God’s love and keep us strong” EPH 3:17 SCHOOL NEWSLETTER – Mar 2020 Dear Parents/Carers After a busy week finishing preparations for and meeting with the SIAMS inspector, school is as busy as ever preparing for a residential trip, workshops, sports festivals and of course, lots of hard work going on in the classes.

A huge ‘Thank You’ to the parents who met with the SIAMS inspector. She was very impressed with the community and team we have supporting our children. As soon as the report is available, I will send it out.

Healthy Schools We are working on a whole school approach to improving the level of handwashing. It seems a very relevant time to be doing this!

The pupils have had the opportunity to use the ‘glow and show’ kit which includes powder, lotion and a UV light to show them how particles and viruses can spread.

They have watched some videos from Public Health England regarding how to wash hands correctly and discussed this in assembly.

The children now know to wash their hands for 20 seconds (enough time to sing Happy Birthday twice!)

We also have posters up reminding everyone how to wash their hands correctly (including the staffroom!) and hope you can encourage this at home as well.

Eco Schools ‘We are still working towards our Silver Award for Eco Schools. We are also continuing to send the message of switching off lights and electronic equipment when it is not needed. During our recent visit from Rocktopus, we created our own EcoSchools song which was lots of fun! We are creating some recycling posters for the school bins and are hoping that people are reducing their use of single use plastic.’ By Josie R

Our Christian Value for this term: Courage This term we will be looking at stepping out of our comfort zone, having the courage to do the right thing, facing a challenge, overcoming fear and encouraging others.

Book Week Thank you to all those parents who very kindly came in during book week to read their favourite children’s stories.

The KS1 teachers also read their favourite books to each class during Book Week. The children voted for their favourite book and the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt was voted the most popular.

Elm Class – RNLI We were very fortunate that Mr Ridgway was able to come in as an RNLI volunteer to tell us all about the RNLI and the important job they do with all their volunteers to keep us safe at the seaside and when we go in the sea. Elm class found out lots of amazing facts which they put into their fact files and some of us also got to dress up as RNLI Lifeboat people and Lifeguards.

Crisp Packet Recycling We are continuing to do well with our crisp packet recycling and have so far accrued 3,000 (£30). Thank you to all who are supporting us with this.

Rowan Class - Tudors During our topic of the Tudors, our class got a visit from James, a Tudor Historian. We all had a great time! We also got to fight each other in a Tudor battle!

Willow Class – Art Workshop Year 6 were thrilled to meet Miranda Carter when she offered to come in and run a workshop for them.

The children enjoyed looking at her paintings, listening about how she became an artist, and the inspiration behind her work.

Miranda Carter is a local artist based in North Wiltshire. Her paintings are influenced by wide open spaces, skies, seas, expansive views and the rhythms of nature. Her paintings have featured in many magazines, exhibitions and she has recently gained various commissions through Neptune kitchens - www.mirandacarter.com.

During the workshop the children learnt about mark making using a variety of natural tools, such as twigs, feathers and charcoal. They experimented with taking away the element of control by using their non-dominant hand. Miranda then went on to discuss her painting techniques and the children had a chance to experiment with watercolour to create a variety of different tones.

Brinkworth Village Hall The 100 Club winning number for March was: 98 The owner of each monthly winning number now receives £20. With annual prizes of £200,£100 and £60 supporters now number 93. Last month’s quiz night was very well attended and raised £362.90 to support the Village Hall. A number of small improvements and redecoration will proceed in future months - including the replacement of lighting with more efficient LED fittings, which should help to reduce running costs in future years.

Brinkworth Parish Council Summary of the meeting held on 10th February 2020. Full minutes can be found on the Parish website.

Wiltshire Councillor T Sturgis reported that county wide a large proportion of the budget is going to Adult Social Care. The council is currently lobbying the government for further funding. Councillor Sturgis continued by saying that due to a huge reduction in agricultural workers there is a lack of culvert maintenance from local landowners. Wiltshire Council will get involved in clearing grass verges if there is a risk to traffic safety.

The smell from the Crappers yard was discussed. Crappers are working with the environment agency to find a solution to the smell which has been exacerbated due to the very wet weather. Although not in the Brinkworth parish the Parish Council say that residents are very welcome to approach the Parish Clerk with any concerns.

Councillor Sturgis asked for any concerns to be copied to him.

There is to be a new kerbside recycling system but no plans for a food waste collection. Residents will be receiving details shortly.

North Wiltshire Villages Flower Club It was lovely to escape the gales and downpours by spending an evening enjoying the colourful sight of a profusion of beautiful flowers at our February meeting. The demonstrator, Carol Norman had overcome many obstacles and travelled from Bournemouth to be with us that evening. We were so glad she did since she created several stunning arrangements and kept us thoroughly engaged and entertained. The theme was ‘Two of a kind’ in which Carol used pairs of matching containers to showcase how these could be used for two very different styles of arrangement.

These lovely arrangements were then raffled with some very lucky members taking one home. During the evening we also held our ‘Best Bloom’ completion to raise funds for charity.

Coughs and sneezes I’m sure everyone is concerned about the coronavirus and how it continues to affect everyone one way or another. I sincerely hope everyone stays safe and well. Now on that note, I’m sure many of you have heard the saying ‘You should feed a cold and starve a fever.’ But is it true? Well kind of, if you are suffering with a cold or other minor symptom then keeping yourself hydrated, and eating a healthy diet is recommended. But not sugary drinks or sugary foods, worst luck.

Hydration is key especially if you do have a fever. Forget about loo rolls! Set your sights on healthy foods and look at making smoothies to build up the immune system.

Spread diseases Now if you are feeling a bit low or have a ticklish cough but are other wise okay (and you’ve no reason to think coronavirus) then get out in the fresh air if you can. With tissues in one pocket and hand gel in the other, employing common sense for ourselves and others, hopefully will help stop unwanted diseases. Of course, exercise along with a healthy diet is the best way to help your wellbeing and your body to avoid those coughs and sneezes.

What if you must stay in doors?

Put on your favourite music, take a few good deep breaths and using the kitchen worktop like a ballet bar. 1. Standing tall, lift one knee to worktop height lower and repeat 10x then repeat on the other leg. 2.

Rise up onto balls of the feet and try to balance for several seconds. 3.

Neighbourhood Support Network – Volunteers Needed

The Brinkworth Parish Council would like to help co-ordinate a neighbourhood support network with help from anyone who can offer some support for others.

If you would be willing to support your neighbours, please contact us.

We are hoping the community can create a neighbourhood support network on two levels: A. People to co-ordinate the effort for your street/neighbours. These people will need to have free time- possibly retired. They will take calls and advise the neighbour support network where help is needed. They might also be able to identify their vulnerable neighbours. They will also arrange transport if it is needed.

We are a resilient community and can all help each other. Here are a few suggestions for what to do should you need to isolate yourself or if you get the virus.

Transport and anything else. Dauntsey Vale Link Scheme (DVLS) is ready to help where needed and the volunteers will do whatever they can to help. During this difficult time they are not seeking remuneration for tasks due to the coronavirus.

General. Many clubs and activities are likely to be closed by the time you read this and maybe people will be working from home to avoid spreading the virus. This can lead to feelings of loneliness, perhaps more so in these anxious times. Consider phoning a neighbour or friend to have a chat. For many living alone it could be the only human contact they have that day.

Boots are now offering free delivery of medication to anyone who is self-isolating. Simply call your usual branch to request the supplies you need.

The Three Crowns in Brinkworth have been offering a small take away menu for a while, however they have now extended their take-away menu to cover more of their in-house Menu. And…. they have also reduced prices to be kinder on our pockets whilst still serving great quality food. Best Kept Village Competition The CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) Best Kept Village competition happens every year and is judged around the end of May/beginning of June (we do not get a warning of the judges’ visit).

The village last won the competition in 1996? The sign commemorating it is standing proudly in front of The Three Crowns, although perhaps it is showing it’s age and a new one would not go amiss?. There are no rules to say that we cannot win it more than once. Indeed, several other villages close by who will be nameless, have won it several times (of course no intent here to get the competitive community spirit going).

If you would like your village to stand a chance to win the coveted sign and you take pride in your village then please could you could take charge of keeping your verges neat and tidy and the area close to your home clear of litter. Also, whether or not you have green fingers have a go at planting those flowers.

CPRE say about the competition: The effort involved need not be huge. There is a remarkable absence of litter in Best Kept Villages and entering is a good way to generate or maintain positive community spirit.

Judging is based on a written submission (done on our behalf by the Parish council) and a site visit focuses primarily on communal buildings and public areas such as village greens, footpaths, car parks, noticeboards, bus shelters etc. The judges will be looking for evidence of a vibrant village which puts time and effort into its Clubs and Organisations and keeps litter and general untidiness to a minimum. However, it is emphasised that it is not a “chocolate box” competition! Judging is based upon how well a village is presented, not on how pretty it is.

Looking at the judge’s comments about previous years winners, words such as ‘well-tended grass verges’, litter free, immaculately presented, everything was clean and tidy, verges well mown and looked after. …. it was a pleasure to see so many gardens neat and colourful and evidently cared for. There was also a noticeable absence of litter, “We were impressed with the lack of litter and the villages showing a strong sense of pride in the local area. “We were immediately drawn to how completely immaculate the village was, not one piece of litter, all the verges trimmed beautifully, every garden and flower basket offering a kaleidoscope of colour. The residents should take great pride in the efforts they made.”

Jobs To Do In The Garden - April A lot of people are wondering what on earth they are going to do now that they are having to stay home. Below are garden tasks for the month, so we should have some wonderful gardens this spring!

Mow lawns when the grass is growing and not wet. This has been hard to do this March so concentrate on it this month.

Make the first cut a high cut and then a few days later you can reduce the height. The aim then is to keep a consistent height throughout the year.

Repair the lawn edges Apply a spring lawn fertiliser at the beginning of the month to encourage good, strong growth. If moss is a problem choose a combined fertiliser and mosskiller. April is the best month to apply lawn weedkiller – be careful of run off.

Lightly rake lawns. A couple of weeks after applying a chemical moss killer to remove the dead moss.

Hardy annuals can be sown in pots to provide colour in the garden. In mild areas with light soil, you can sow directly outside.

Modular trays are useful for sowing half-hardy summer bedding plants such as marigolds and Petunia. You will need to sow them under cover, or in a heated propagator, at the correct temperature, only putting them outside when the weather is constantly warm.

Sow directly into a prepared bed crops such as broccoli, carrots, peas, beetroot, and salad crops.

Courgettes, pumpkins, squashes and tomatoes can all now be sown in a heated greenhouse or propagator.

Sweet peas can be sown outside this month.

Towards the end of the month, in mild areas, you may be able to plant up hanging baskets for the summer. When planting hanging baskets use slowrelease fertiliser and keep in the greenhouse whilst the plants grow on.

Plant summer-flowering bulbs, if not done already.

Towards the end of the month dahlia tubers can be planted outside Mulch rose and shrub beds with a (2-3in) layer of organic matter. This will help retain moisture during dry spells and reduce weed build-up.

Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a balanced fertiliser (such as Growmore or blood, fish and bone). Sprinkle it over the root area then hoe into the surface of the soil. Pay particular attention to heavily pruned shrubs.

If frost threatens then try to protect the flowers of fruit trees with fleece.

Easter Eggs??

Usually when the magazine issue is for a particular big event month, we try to reflect the event in the magazine. This month the COVID-19 virus has overtaken Easter a special Christian time of the year but I am keen to have something Easter related, however a tenuis link, so I thought I would regale you with my knowledge of eggs and a chicken or dog? tale.

When my husband retired, he decided to keep chickens. It was his hobby, so my only input was to choose which breed of chickens to buy. I did this by how many eggs they laid, what colour egg they laid and how pretty the chicken was!

We had an 8 year-old German Shorthaired Pointer who was larger than normal for his breed and when he ran he would sometimes sound like a cantering horse.

Anyone who has one of these dogs would know that they are very loving dogs, highly intelligent and very exuberant even when old! Although our dog had been trained in the basics he was 8 years old when he started gun dog training. To train him not to chase birds my husband would take him into the chicken pen and walk around with him amongst the chickens. The chickens seemed quite happy and he dutifully ignored the chickens …..unless he thought we were not looking. I was on my own with him one day when I realised that all the chickens were walking in front of me (usually they would be milling all around me) and they were starting to walk faster and faster, I looked behind me and there was our dog in stalker mode , crouched down. When he saw me looking he immediately stood up and put his nose in the air and was sniffing the air as if he was just out on a walk – nothing to do with me Mum! One day after buying some new chickens (of my choice) we let them out of their hut and immediately one of them flew into the air and out of the pen. There followed a whole morning of chase-the-chicken and very frayed tempers. The dog was behind us but my husband had firmly told him “LEAVE” so he was just chasing us, chasing the chicken. By this time we had picked up several fishing nets, blankets and delicious chicken food, (which the chicken did not want) and a number of other accoutrements to catch the chicken. We were both very red with exertion as we had only stopped once for to watch ‘How To Catch A Chicken’ on YouTube (a load of rubbish I would not recommend it). We were also red with bramble scratches which would take every opportunity to grab us but seemed to leave the chicken unscathed.

Finally, out of breath and temper I threw everything to the ground and shouted “I GIVE UP!”. At which point the badly trained gun dog ran past us in full flight, dove into the hedge and came out with the chicken in his mouth. He immediately sat in front of my husband and proudly presented it to him.

The chicken was completely unharmed and lived with us for many years and I added chicken temperament to my - how to choose a chicken list.

Anyway, I digress I am supposed to be talking about eggs. I am not a farmer and these facts are only what I have learnt from looking after chickens and their eggs and therefore not all of the facts have been scientifically proven.

You can safely keep eggs for about 3 weeks Hard boiled fresh eggs are an absolute nightmare to peel, it is best to wait until they are at least three days old before boiling them.

The easiest way to shell a hard boiled egg (a 3+ day old egg) is to immediately after cooking it put it into cold running water until it is cold. Put some water (about a quarter full) into a whiskey tumbler (no not the cut glass one, something a little cheaper) and put the egg in it. Then put your hand over the glass and shake – you can also jump about at this point if you want to get some exercise. Take the egg out of the tumbler and the shell will come off very easily. The shaking loosens the membrane inside the shell, which attaches the egg to the shell, thereby making it easier to come off.

Eggs come in multiple colours, green, blue, chocolate, etc. Coloured eggs still have a yellow/orange yolk (sorry but I am often asked this). The blue egg shell is also blue inside.

Coloured eggs seem to have a different hardness of shell but are usually harder than the light brown or white eggs. The chocolate coloured eggs have a light brown under coat and a dark brown top-coat on the shell. It is a bit like spray paint and if you rub the egg when it is fresh the brown colour can be rubbed off.

Eggs should be stored the pointy side down. This is because in the fatter end there is an air bubble in the shell and if the egg is stored with the fat end down the air bubble starts to rise through the egg and it can make the egg go off.

Sometimes eggs have hard pimples on the shell, this is just where there is extra/too much calcium in the shell. It does not affect the egg.

Egg shells when fresh are porous so if you have a dirty egg just wipe it with a clean damp cloth and do not immerse in water otherwise bacteria can get into the shell.

I have found that people do prefer different colours.

Some like white only, some blue, some chocolate brown and if you are like me, I like a mixed batch.

People often ask should you store eggs in a fridge or out of a fridge. For optimum egg quality eggs like to be stored at 10C. It is my personal belief that cakes rise better if the egg is at room temperature when they go into the mix. If you take the egg out of the fridge and bring it to room temperature, it is best to use it rather than put it back in the fridge.

Store eggs separately as they take on the smell of what is next to them.

Pickled eggs?- they are like marmite, you either love them or hate them!
