An Event-ful Month! Happy April, Happy Spring, Happy Easter. Can you tell I am happy? The weather is finally turning warm and sunny. My daffodils and Bradford pear tree are in full bloom and me and the kids have spring fever. Spring break just wasn't enough, was it? This last downhill slide to summer always feels so long for kids and I know they are getting antsy to be spending time doing anything but school! They won't have time to get bored or stressed out about the TAKS tests, with all of the fun activities happening around town in April and May. There always seems to be a couple of months in the DFW area that are just chock-full of family-friendly events and April is one of them, so check out our calendar carefully as we have them all listed. Not only is it a beautiful time of year to visit the Dallas Arboretum, the Dallas or Ft. Worth Zoos or your favorite local park, there are some great expos coming up, too. Our favorite of course is our very own North Texas Kids Summer Fun Fest on Saturday, April 24 at Plano West Senior High, benefiting the Plano West Theatre Department. This is a free event! We are going to have loads of vendors with information on fun summer camps, activities and some great shopping. So stop by between 10am and 2pm for a rockin' good time! If you love to shop and love a good deal, this is the place to be. If you love art, head to the Dallas Museum of Art this month for: Sor Juana Family Celebration: A Celebration of

Enjoy a wide variety of culturally themed arts activities for all ages including a family film, a theater performance of Sor Juana for families by Frida Espinosa Müller, a Collection Connection featuring the ancient Maya work Lady Bolon K’an, sketching in the galleries, and films from the Dallas Film Society’s 2010 DALLAS International Film Festival. A special guest performance by Mariachi Rosas Divinas, the first female mariachi group, will be a highlight of the event. March and April have been eventful for me personally, too. Those of you who have been reading the magazine or our blog know that for the past several months, my husband and I have been working to get healthy, from the inside out. While our coaching sessions with Jenny Bair, our inner organizer and cofounder of Living Well Dallas, have been phenomenal, our weight loss has not been so great. This has nothing to do with Betty Murray, CN, HHC, RYT , our nutritionist and other co-founder of Living Well. She has been patiently working with us to figure out what is going on, tweaking our food and exercise plans and being supportive when we get frustrated at

ourselves. The biggest news for me was to find out that I have some crazy food allergies that are making me feel yucky and making it impossible to lose weight. I have just joined the millions of other folks out there who are now following a 100% gluten-free diet. Read my article on pg.3 for all the details of this new challenge. If what you are eating is not making you feel good and no matter what you do you can't lose weight, I encourage you to go see Betty and take an allergy test. It is very affordable and is certainly one piece of my own weight loss puzzle that I wish I had figured out sooner. It is never too late to get healthy! If you are looking for something fun, free and healthy to do (besides taking a bike ride around White Rock Lake,) go visit the new Whole Foods Market at the Park Lane Shops in Dallas. See my article on pg.14 for why this is a fun place to hang out. Remember that April is also Earth Day month and there are tons of local community events, big and small, that will celebrate this important day. Earth Day falls on April 22 this year, but watch the weekends before and after for many of the events. I hope you enjoy a beautiful and fruitful spring season. Spend a few minutes with your kids, outside, celebrating and rejoicing in this time of rebirth and renewal. Every culture throughout time has celebrated this important time of year, so no matter how you give thanks this month, enjoy it! Happy reading,

Spring is upon us and that means it’s time to get organized. Do not let the idea overwhelm you. Spending small segments of time each day on getting organized will get you far and without the headache. Here are a few favorite tips to help you this year during your spring cleaning and it gets the kids involved too!

One Drawer a Day - Pick one drawer a day to purge through

and organize. Only spend about 20 minutes completing this task. Just by spending a little time each day going through the hidden clutter, you will be surprised how much more organized you become by the end of the month. In the kitchen pick the utility drawer and purge unwanted, chipped, or stained spoons and spatulas. In the laundry room, choose a junk drawer or battery drawer. In the master bathroom, choose the cosmetic drawer and purge unwanted foundation, old mascara and eye shadow colors you no longer use.

Digital Declutter - Block out an entire day to spend going through

all of your digital photos. Organize them by child and age, vacations with the date, holidays by year, etc. Delete any pictures you do not want to keep. Once you have completed this task, be sure to back up your pictures to a disk and keep in a secure place. Finding pictures to send to family and friends will now be a much easier task in the future.

Artwork Collection - Each school year, kids bring home numerous amounts of artwork. Do you really need to keep all of it? The answer is no. Art portfolios are a great way to archive and share the artwork your child has done over the year. Get the kids involved by having them choose their favorite ones to add to the portfolio and get rid of the rest. Each child should have their own portfolio labeled with their name and the school year. This will eliminate the boxes taking up your garage or attic space. Magazine Overload - Purge through all of the unwanted magazines.

Go into each room of the house and throw away any magazines that have not been read in over a month. If you haven’t read it but it is still 3 months old, get rid of it anyway. A great idea to recycle the old magazines you have already finished reading, donate them to your hair or nail salon. Limit yourself and each family member to only 2 magazine subscriptions per year. Cut costs and save paper!

Kids Take Control - In each of the children’s closet, place a purge bin/bag. Teach them to decide which clothing they want/need to keep and which to either donate or put aside to sell. Not only will this be a great way to get them involved in the process of organizing, but it teaches them accountability. Organizing your home can be self satisfying and very rewarding once it is all

that she created the container that holds them.

Supplies: Empty aluminum can

5-10 small rocks, stones or pebbles

Liquid gesso

4-inch potted herb plant

Screwdriver and hammer Acrylic craft paints in bright colors Acrylic sealer spray, matte finish Craft stick

Black permanent marker

1.5 cups potting soil White craft glue Water

Flower stickers (optional)

Instructions: 1. Completely wash and dry aluminum can. Sand off any rough edges from opening of can. 2. Turn can upside down. Parent should use screwdriver or other pointed object to poke holes in the bottom of the can. 3. Paint outside of can with one coat of gesso. Let dry completely. 4. Paint can in the desired color, repeat coats if needed. 5. Decorate however you like. Use a thin paint brush for long lines, dip the end of the paint brush into paint for polka dots or decorate with stickers if desired. 6. In a well-ventilated area, spray the outside of the completed can with acrylic sealer spray. 7. Let dry. 8. Place enough rocks or pebbles in the bottom of the can to form a single layer. 9. Add enough potting soil to fill the can two-thirds full. 10. Remove potted herb from its container and transplant into the can. 11. Fill edges with remaining potting soil, gently pat down so that plant is firmly in the can but not compacted so much that it’s too tight. 12. Place can on a plate (to catch any water drainage) and add some water to the newly planted herbs. 13. Paint craft stick whatever color you like or leave natural. Allow to dry.

14. Use a black permanent marker to write the herb name onto the craft stick. 15. Insert your plant marker into the soil, being careful not to crush any roots along the way. 16. Place your new garden in a sunny window and remember to water them!

Simple Snacks I'm Lisa Greene! As a Real North Texas Mom of a child with food allergies, I've become a natural, healthy-eating, whiz in the kitchen with lots of input from my kids. I am always experimenting with chemical-free, real foods to find recipes for my family. I'd like to share with you some quick-fix, easy ways to get back to cooking from scratch with real, unprocessed ingredients. It's easy to make satisfying snacks the kids will love that don't come from a can or a box.

Some of my kid's favorites: Healthy Chocolate Shake Ingredients: 2 frozen bananas 6 oz milk, any kind 2 tsp. unsweetened cocoa Instructions: Cut peel off the frozen banana Put all ingredients in a blender Blend until smooth Enjoy! A great way to get protein and the antioxidant power of chocolate! The kids won't even miss the ice cream.

Cherry Oatmeal Protein Bar Ingredients: 2 ½ cups oats 2 tbs. butter 1 cup applesauce 2 egg whites 1 cup maple syrup ½ cup honey ½ cup protein powder (ex: soy or whey protein) 2 tbs. ground flax seeds (optional) 2 cups frozen cherries, thawed, drained, chopped

How has working on this foundation helped you deal with your own grief? I will always have the pain in my heart from losing my son. But knowing that I am helping others recognize the early warning signs through increased awareness and funding specific research projects focusing on brain tumor/cancer, has given me hope that others will be saved and that the “magic bullet” will be discovered. I have met so many terrific people through our fundraising events – survivors, families who have lost a loved one, doctors, new friends and businesses that have donated items for our silent and live auctions, National Brain Tumor Society staff, volunteers and supporters from all walks of life whose hearts were touched by what we were doing – all of whom I have such deep respect and love for and who I call my FRIENDS. Nothing that we’ve accomplished would have been possible without the help and support of so many people. The Foundation is keeping “Dad” alive in the minds of his two sons, my grandchildren, and helping them to realize that tragedies will happen, but if you can help others with what you’ve learned, you can make a difference in someone else’s life. Tell me about your upcoming Golf Tournament and how people can get involved: The 3rd Annual Nick Gonzales Charity Golf Tournament will be held Friday afternoon, May 7th at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, with a shotgun start, four-man scramble at 1:30. Registration fees for golf are $135 and include round of golf, upscale buffet with a prime rib station, 2 for 1 certificate for future round of golf, raffle, silent and live auction. For those who don’t play golf, they can join us around 6:30 for Dinner Only at $50 a person and enjoy the fabulous food, raffle, silent and live auctions. Located at the Park Lane Shops at I75 and Park Lane, the newest Whole Foods Market is a destination location for families. Heidi, the NTK business manager, and I had the privilege of taking a sneak peek prior to the store opening. Karen Lukin, who handles Dallas Media and Community Relations for Whole Foods, was a gracious and enlightening tour guide who was passionate about some of the exciting new features at this 62,000 square foot flagship store. From the design and layout to the emphasis on high-quality local products, there was a lot to see.

Even if you don't love to cook and you prefer someone else to do it for you, you will love the new Whole Foods market and here is why:

Karen called it "segmentation," I call it Mommy's time saver. The foods are beautifully and logically organized so that everything is easier to find. For example, in the baby/toddler food aisle, they have added a small freezer with a selection of age-appropriate foods for the discerning mom. They have a 40-foot aisle of gluten-free products so that you don't have to hunt them down in every aisle. The wine and cheese are side by side, which leads me to the #2 reason to visit WF. They have a wine bar on site, with 1,000 labels of wine! This store is so diverse and architecturally pleasing to the eye, you wouldn't mind 2. going on a date night with your hubby or meeting a girlfriend for a girl's night out. They have wine, cheese and other snacks with a few barstools and cocktail tables to entice you to linger at the Wine Bar along with indoor and outdoor seating at the front of the store. Second, you can order a glass of wine and go do your grocery shopping with your wine. Forget the coffee bar! Finally, I loved Karen's idea: let their Concierge do your shopping for you while you enjoy the wine bar.

The Cart-o-later is a must-see for all kids (and their machine-loving adults). What is it, you ask? This Whole Foods Market is built above the 3. other Park Lane shops and there is a parking garage below. Heidi and I immediately thought, how do you get your groceries to your car? Karen got

very excited about this fun and practical piece of technology. There are two-sided escalators both inside and outside the store. One side carries people, the other your cart (without your kids, please!) You will have to see it yourself to believe it!

Cake decorating while you wait, personalized cupcakes filled with all kinds of goodies, and any other baked goods and chocolate delights you can dream of. If you love sweets, you will adore this bakery. Want a healthier choice? Check out the Frozen Yogurt bar, great flavors and fresh toppings to please any palate. Make sure to pick up dinner at the hot foods bar, fresh barbecue or deli sections while you wait for the cake. It smells amazing in this place! For those of you who are serious about your health and cleaning up your diet, this Whole Foods has a full Raw Foods Bar, fresh juice and 5. smoothie bar, and so many delicious choices, it makes it easy to follow a raw foods or vegan diet. And it's right up front, not hidden in the back of the store. For Dad: For those beer-loving dads who don't really care about grocery shopping, you could spend your entire visit roaming the 64-foot long wall of refrigerated beer (600 varieties). And did I mention they have free wi-fi, so you can always hang out on the patio with your computer or smartphone and avoid the crowds in the beer aisle. I didn't even mention all of the amazing kids' products, vitamins and hidden little play areas around the store. I will let you discover those on your own. Or you can schedule your own tour. Whole Foods offers tours to school groups, scout troops and mom's groups. My daughter's Brownie troop did this in Plano and it was their favorite field trip of the year! Alexandria’s Book Review Miss Nelson is Missing!

A Review by Alexandria Battle By Harry G. Allard Jr. 32 pages • Ages 4-8 Sandpiper (October 1985) Harry Allard, one author of this month’s book, grew up in California and, over the course of his life, served in Korea and became fluent in French. He met the other author (and illustrator), James Marshall, in Boston, and has collaborated frequently with him on children’s books. Mr. Marshall was born right here in Texas, and studied to play the viola and start a musical career. He too is bilingual, having taught Spanish to Catholic school students after graduation. These two unique minds together created the book I enjoyed. This enchanting little book is one that my mother introduced to me, and I’ve been happy to read the story. It reminds me a lot of what students see when a substitute teacher comes to

class instead of their regular one. It’s really cute and original, with the funny touch I love in shorter books. Miss Nelson is Missing opens with a very, very badly behaved class. Poor Miss Nelson tries her hardest to get them to settle down, but they won’t stop throwing spitballs, they will not be quiet during story time, and getting them to do class assignments—ha! For Miss Nelson, this is the last straw. Something has to be done, immediately—her room is the worst in the whole school, for crying out loud! The following day, Miss Nelson’s kids are excited to see that their teacher is nowhere to be found. That’s great, they think—more time to misbehave and not do their work. But their substitute, Miss Viola Swamp, is a

The atmosphere was very nice, kind of lofty with French doors to a patio. There were two very big mirrors on one wall and interesting lighting. It had a relaxing feel to it. The kids’ menu had a lot to choose from including cheese or pepperoni pizza, mini-cheeseburgers, pasta with marinara or alfredo, grilled cheese sandwich, cheese quesadillas, macaroni and cheese, chicken tenders and buttermilk panfried chicken. I ordered the pasta alfredo. It was very good, but also rich and filling. My mom was trying to decide between the pulled-pork tacos or the fish tacos. She picked the fish tacos which she always likes, but she loved

these! Our waiter provided good service and was helpful when we had questions about the menu. Bread Winners also has a bakery counter with brownies, scones, cookies, muffins, pies and more. There was also a case of beautiful cakes. I had a snicker doodle cookie. It was very good! Everyone should try Bread Winners. We had a wonderful time at the Plano location at Lakeside Market (Preston and Spring Creek). They also have a Bread Winners in Uptown and Inwood Village, which both look very nice. In order to find out whether the kids and the detective really do find Miss Nelson and escape the clutches of the formidable Miss Swamp, you’ll have to find this book and dive in! I heartily recommend the sequel, Miss Nelson is Back, and another, Miss Nelson Has a Field Day.

and a good time to evaluate your child’s mathematical skills. In the upper

grades, math can become

frustrating to students and homework often becomes a source of anxiety. Many

find that math is the most difficult to master of all

the subjects. Parents can ease this frustration by providing help and positive feedback to their children during homework time.

Here area few simple steps to help students improve in math: • Review, review, review.

Review all homework and tests together. Correct and go over errors to

make sure your child has full understanding of a concept before moving on to new work.

• Be sure your child reads assigned chapters thoroughly.

Quiz your child on his or her understanding of the vocabulary and ask

the child to review each mathematical step verbally.

• Help your child understand that math follows specific rules. Math is not weird. It’s logical and sensible. Ask your child to explain

how he or she understands the procedure necessary to solve a problem.

Listen for flawed reasoning or incorrect procedures, and then identify correct procedures together.

• Make sure your child takes good notes in class.

Remind your child when taking notes to neatly write down every step

and note areas of confusion. It also helps to have your child re-write all notes as part of the homework to clarify understanding.

• Above all, avoid doing the problem for your child. Math concepts build on each other. It is important that your child

understands each mathematical concept, how it fits into the process, and understands the processes and procedures. Understanding the concepts makes remembering the procedures much easier. Don’t let homework

become the cause of strife within the home. If your child is struggling with

math, seek professional help early. You may wish to retain the assistance of a math tutor who can instruct your child in a manner that is comfortable and

encouraging. The Tutoring Programs that offer diagnostic testing will be able to pinpoint your child’s weak areas in math logic and procedures and create

an individualized program that is designed to meet your child’s specific needs from the basics through calculus.

If your child is struggling in Math, address this issue as early as possible. Math is an integral part of their education and their life!

My Never-ending Passion for the Great Game: Baseball by Mike Kravik

-“People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” - Rogers Hornsby The best part about writing for North Texas Kids is that I am allowed to write about anything I want to (within reason) that’s related to kids and sports in the area. I spent a lot of time at the end of February kicking around ideas to write about for the April Sports Scoop. Fresh off the Winter Olympics and the riveting show Team USA gave our country, I thought it might be time for a hockey article. We have a lot women readers so a nice story on a local ice skater could have worked. A lot of kids in the area just finished up basketball and with March Madness happening and the Mavericks playing so well, a “Who is the future LeBron James of North Texas?” story would have been timely. The weather was so cold, so wet and so depressing this winter that an article about an indoor sport related to winter seemed to make sense. But as the days of February stopped dragging their knuckles and gave way to March, the weather started warming up and I happened to catch a few high school baseball games in North Texas. Maybe it was finally getting a chance to enjoy the sunshine and be outside. Maybe it was the thousands of sunflower seeds I ate that made my mouth feel like I had chewed on a brick the next morning. More likely, it was seeing a 15 year old kid hit a prodigious 400 foot home run, another kid smoke a triple to the gap punctuated with a Pete Rose-style head first slide and the relief pitcher 26

with the guts to throw a breaking ball on a full count to close a game out. Whatever it was, I have fallen in love yet again with the Great Game. With all due respect to Team USA Hockey, Shaun White and LeBron James, you are all great at what you do but your sports are not nearly as fun to write about as baseball. -“You look forward to it like it’s your birthday party when you’re a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.” - Joe DiMaggio Opening Day in baseball symbolizes so many staples of the sport and life, namely hope and optimism. People who play or follow the game closely know that baseball is designed to break your heart (and it probably will) but on Opening Day everybody starts the season fresh and is in first place. After a few games, reality inevitably sets in and weaknesses are exposed but the optimism of Opening Day is intoxicating. Nolan Ryan, the Team President of the Texas Rangers, told the fans this year that he thinks the Rangers can win 92 games and that he’ll be very disappointed if the Rangers don’t win the American League West. The jaded, cynical side of me that has closely followed the team for 35 years says “Yeah, right. Blah, blah, blah, you’re just trying to sell tickets, Nolan. The seeds of my cynicism stem from all the optimism I had for Ranger teams the years after (1976, 1987 and 2005) they came out of nowhere to have good years only to follow up those seasons with losing records. The other side of me thinks the past is the past and sees a young team that won 87 games last year. I know young teams tend to get better. I also know we won that many games without a healthy

I’m not saying, I’m just saying. -“Baseball was made for kids, and grown-ups only mess it up.” - Bob Lemon Throughout North Texas thousands of young boys and girls are getting ready to start their baseball or softball seasons. Some are getting their feet wet by playing t-ball while others are making the big jump from rec ball to select baseball. That also means hundreds of volunteer parents are going to be coaching or cheering their kids this spring. Somewhere along the way you’re going to see lots of “Daddy Ball.” You may also see the reverse of “Daddy Ball” where coaches have impossible expectations for their kids and are looking for any excuse to yell at or bench their own kid. You will also see coaches in a game with ten year olds getting in each others faces and trying to intimidate 16 year old umpires making $20 a game into giving them a call. You’re going to see parents ripping on coaches because their kids aren’t hitting higher in the line-up or playing one of the prized middle infield positions. I know these things are going to happen but my hopes are that parents check themselves and try not to kill any child’s love for the game. -“Dad, you wanna have a catch?”- Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to his dad in “Field of Dreams” For whatever reason, I don’t cry at movies but the first time I saw Kevin Costner ask his father to play catch with him in “Field of Dreams” I swallowed hard. It wasn’t full fledged waterworks but that simple scene struck an emotional chord

within me. If I delve deep into the cobwebs, I think I know why… playing catch was one of the first things my father and I did together and it symbolized all the shared positive experiences we had with the sport. It wasn’t just that my dad played catch with me but he also helped coach some of the teams I played for as a kid. He introduced me to baseball cards, showed me what the standings meant in the newspaper and also taught me how to keep score. Starting when I was six years old we started going to games and ended up visiting several different major league parks together. When he was really sick, I brought him a baseball book filled with funny quotes. On the inside cover I wrote “It ain’t over till it’s over.” He gave me a wry look at first and it’s the last time I can remember him smiling. One of the biggest highlights of my baseball life was going to Game 4 of the 2005 World Series between the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros. That was the night the White Sox won their first World Series championship in 88 years. Sitting directly in front of me were a couple of White Sox fans – a 60ish year old man with his 30-something son. After the last out was made and the White Sox won, the two men hugged each other for a long time and couldn’t stop crying. Not only did the White Sox win the World Series in their lifetimes but they got to see it happen together. I’m not one for too many public displays of affection, especially if it means holding another guy and weeping but I understood exactly what that moment meant and gave them both a pass. Play ball!
