As President and CEO of Brockville General Hospital, I’m pleased on behalf of our staff, physicians, and volunteers to congratulate the Brockville & District Hospital Foundation on another year of remarkable success.

The past 12 months saw the completion of the Your Health Your Hospital campaign, which raised more than $12.5 million to purchase equipment that will enhance care for the patients we serve. The fact you accomplished this in two short years speaks to the incredible generosity of our community. It is also a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Foundation’s staff and Board of Directors to provide Brockville General with the equipment and resources our care teams require to deliver the best healthcare experience. The past year has been an extremely busy one for our hospital as we continue to experience an unprecedented increase in demand for services.

It comes at a time when our staff is also undertaking several projects that are preparing us to meet the future healthcare needs of our community. It’s exciting to see our future already taking shape with our new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) service and state-of-the-art Hologic 3Dimension Mammography scanner. We have also shared with the community preliminary details for the next phase of the hospital’s capital redevelopment. These projects are critical steps forward in modernizing our hospital – and none would be possible without our strong partners at the Foundation by our side. The work we are doing together today will ensure Brockville General is there when future generations of patients and their families need us.

HUNTer GraNT

I could write this testimonial on so many fronts, as a donor, as a former Brockville and District Hospital Foundation staff member, as a patient, but I write this testimonial as a daughter and the impact the Palliative Care Service has had on myself and my family this past year.

My father Hunter Grant was diagnosed with esophagus cancer late fall of 2023. While treatment was attempted in Kingston Dad’s poor body could take no more and he made the personal decision to cease further measures. He was transferred to the Donald B. Green Tower and the oasis of the Palliative Care floor thanks to the coordination of our angel on earth Dr. Jerry Ashe.

My Dad and Mom have been huge supporters of the Foundation in support of the Brockville General Hospital for decades. Seeing my Dad smile for the first time in weeks happened when he was transferred to the Palliative Care Room that he and Mom sponsored during the Under One Roof Campaign. We were all moved beyond words. As Dad said, “you support causes like Palliative Care because you know

the importance of it, but it does not truly hit home until you need to lean on it yourself”.

My Mom has noted that there is an unspoken kindness that radiates on that floor, a respect, a care, a sense of safety and calm so needed during one’s end of life. We as a family spent several weeks, days and nights with Dad and the comfort not only he but we as a family felt was immense.

My Dad very publicly opted for the MAID service living and departing his life on his own terms. We as a family expected nothing less. We will be forever grateful to Dr. Ashe and the extended Palliative Care team for their guidance as Dad and we navigated that decision.

I miss my Dad terribly but am comforted to know that during his final days he was able to be in an environment that spoke and radiated peace and care thanks to the Palliative Care Service at the Brockville General Hospital. It is renowned for a reason; how lucky our entire community is to have it. A blessing tenfold.

We are very proud to have an MRI Suite built and equipped specifically for the needs of people in our community. From the moment you walk into the suite you can almost forget that you are in a hospital. Because of the untiring effort of the Foundation and the generosity of our community we could add in calming touches such as our backlit ceiling features and patient audio and visual entertainment system. Brockville now has the latest in MRI technology that includes additional software that allows us to capture high quality images faster. Because of the strong magnetic field all equipment needed in the scanning room must be approved for use, which of course means it is even more expensive than typical medical equipment. We were able to purchase an MRI approved patient monitor, ventilator, stretcher, wheelchair and other needed equipment. You can see that “funding an MRI” is much more than buying just the MRI scanner! We are grateful to the Foundation and our Community – this is truly a “without you this would not have happened” addition to local high quality health care.

We are very grateful to have received 3 new ultrasound machines. With this new technology I can see the patient’s previous images at the same time as I am scanning. Now I can be more precise and focus the ultrasound on the area of interest identified in their previous image. The new machines also come with a tablet that allows me to scan from the other side of the patient. I no longer have to reach over patients and I can more easily capture the images I need when scanning patients in our Intensive Care Unit. Better imaging leads to better care for our patients.

Techs are finding the Hologic unit easy to use; somewhat quicker exam; many different paddles to use which provides better adaptability to each patient which can increase their comfort. We can see patient’s previous exams on the new unit so we have direct comparison for positioning and don’t need to leave the room to use another workstation. Techs are excited to offer the new testing capabilities in the future. More positive patient experiences will come once we start these exams.

Patients are telling us they are having a better overall experience. The new mammography suite is easier to find and closer to the main area of the hospital. They notice the brightness and spaciousness of the department as a whole, and many comment on the comfortable environment of the change room. Many patients are finding the exam more comfortable and quicker. Although it’s the same exam patients seem to tolerate the exam better. Patients are excited about the new unit and what it offers for the community. - Denise

The Foundation raised money to pay for the new Mammography unit. This has been a huge upgrade from our older unit. Patients I have talked to say the exam is much more comfortable and faster than before. This is a sensitive exam for most patients and the new machine has definitely improved the overall patient experience. The images created are also of higher quality, which will lead to better care through less call backs for patients and improved cancer detection. A true win-win for patient care. - Dr. Kevin Tyler, MD, FRCPC, Head of Mammography, BgH

We are grateful for the ongoing efforts of the Brockville & District Hospital Foundation not only for our department but for the hospital as a whole. Their support throughout the years has allowed the Cardiovascular Services Team to upgrade several ECG carts in the fleet as well as Cardiac monitoring devices. The benefits of this technology upgrade improve the ECG quality and accurate workflow providing a better opportunity to deliver patient care more effectively. Additional monitoring devices not only allow us to reduce wait times but provides a timely diagnosis and therefore, treatment plans for those patients requiring cardiac care. We could not accomplish this very important diagnostic testing for our community without the Brockville & District Hospital Foundation and our donors.

In the month of December, our office was graced by the presence of some wonderful members of the Pharmacy team. Their purpose?

To unveil a magnificent painting crafted by none other than Rasha Sarhan, the Pharmacy Manager and Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist at Brockville General Hospital. Rasha, in pursuit of a creative outlet during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, discovered her talent for painting. The masterpiece she presented to us depicts the serene landscape of Dow’s Lake. It now adorns our office walls, serving as a constant reminder of the invaluable support we receive from our generous donors.

This artistic gesture was not just a display of Rasha’s talents; it was a heartfelt token of appreciation for the donors who made it possible for us to acquire a Liquid Packager. This device has revolutionized their workflow, enabling the Pharmacy team to accurately and efficiently package oral liquids in unit dose syringes.

Thanks to the unwavering support of our donors, the daily tasks of the pharmacy department have been made easier. As we gaze upon the picturesque Dow’s Lake landscape, we are reminded of the positive impact that comes with the collective effort of our dedicated team and the generosity of those who believe in our mission.
