The Brockville and District Hospital Foundation connects with supporters and raises funds to meet the unfunded equipment, redevelopment and program needs of Brockville General Hospital that must be supported by the community.
The Foundation strives to be a leading non-profit charity, serving as a trusted steward of financial gifts and relationships with donors and the community. It also promotes understanding of what the hospital needs to provide compassionate patient care, excellent programs and services for our community.
We will focus our resources strategically.
We will work with donors and other partners to achieve greater results.
We will listen and respond to changing donor interests and community needs.
We will conduct all of our business with an emphasis on sustainability, ensuring the Foundation continues to thrive and serve our community effectively into the future.
The Foundation strives to merit the respect and trust of the general public. We recognize the importance of ensuring donors and prospective donors have full confidence in the programs and causes that they are asked to support.
We endeavour to educate and inform the general public and donors of the Foundation’s mission, of the way the Foundation intends to use donated resources. It is our intention to respect, recognize and acknowledge our donors, and to handle information regarding their donations with strict confidentiality.
One
could never have anticipated the dramatic impact COVID would have in our world, our communities and our lives since the spring of 2020.
Throughout the past 16 months we have all benefited from the courage and dedication of our front-line staff at BGH, our first responders, and essential workers who have supported and cared for us during this time of uncertainty.
As a Foundation, we have also faced significant changes in our work and engagement with donors and supporters. We could no longer gather for events – to celebrate our successes, to tour the new Donald B Green Tower, or to raise funds, relying instead on virtual forums.
In many instances, events were cancelled – our 2020 Ride the River was postponed to May 2021, and third-party events, some of which have raised funds for BGH for over 30 years, were not held to ensure the safety of volunteers and participants.
Although the pandemic has presented these many challenges, we remain thankful for and encouraged by the generous support of our donors and dedication of our volunteers.
It is quite remarkable that in November 2020 we successfully concluded our Under One Roof campaign and saw the opening of the Donald B Green Tower. We are grateful for the leadership and commitment of our Cabinet Co-chairs, Mary Jean McFall and David Beatty and all cabinet members. We acknowledge the support of many generous donors, and the unprecedented funding from our local municipalities – Brockville, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, and Prescott, all central to the success in achieving our goal. The collective contributions of all are reflected in the legacy of the Donald B Green Tower, which will have a lasting impact upon the citizens of Brockville and surrounding communities for years to come.
We applaud our many volunteers and event organizers who were determined to find a way to reframe events so that they could continue despite COVID. For example, the Heart and Sol organizing team undertook a virtual appeal that raised over $30,000 for Cardiac Rehab at BGH. Likewise, the Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament co-chairs Jim Cooper and Dave Publow and the entire committee were adamant that the FOPC would go on. Their efforts realized a unique two-day format which ensured everyone was safe, everyone enjoyed themselves, and over $200,000 was raised for Palliative Care!
Each of these successes speak to the resilience, resolve and generosity of our donors, partners and supporters. It is also reflective of the unwavering support for our local hospital.
We are most grateful to you, our donors and supporters, who have stepped forward during this year of unprecedented challenge and change. We are humbled by your generosity which has had such a profound and enduring impact on our hospital and our greater community.

CARDIAC REhABIlITATIOn PROgRAM
What do community minded individuals do during these strange times when physical distancing and social gatherings are not permitted? They think outside the box and decide that an annual event will take place virtually instead! Thanks to the planning committee of the Heart & Solstice event, that is exactly what they did in a very short amount of time. With today’s technology, some perseverance, and a significant number of donors/supporters, over $30,000 was raised for Brockville General Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Thank you to all who made this virtual event possible.
On Tuesday, Sept. 1st & Wednesday, Sept. 2nd our community came together to support the 27th Friends of Palliative Care Golf Days! Although we were faced with challenges this year, our friends came together to raise $177,350 for Brockville General Hospital’s Palliative Care Program. This vital service, costs $640,000 annually to operate.
On behalf of the Friends of Palliative Care Committee, a sincere thank you to all our friends, sponsors, volunteers and golfers in participating and supporting the Brockville General Hospital Palliative Care Program!
The Brockville General Hospital’s Professional Practice is so grateful to you for all your ongoing hard work and dedication to providing simulation equipment for our practice lab. This equipment provides the BGH nurses with the opportunity to have hands-on practice with skills so they are confident and capable at the patient’s bedside.

The Brockville and District Hospital Foundation’s 2020 Annual Appeal raised over $179,956 has been raised for new YAG laser eye surgery equipment for Brockville General Hospital through this year’s Annual Appeal fundraiser campaign.
“This new laser system is a vital tool in the prevention of vision loss from various eye disorders,” shared Dr. Sam Stevens, an Ophthalmologist who practices at BGH. “It will be primarily used in the management of glaucoma and conditions related to cataract surgery at our hospital. Both affect a large and increasing segment of our population.”
To maintain the safe, quality care provided at BGH, the new laser equipment replaces an older model, which is facing the end of its recommended lifespan.
“Thousands of people in our community will benefit from your generous donations to our Hospital – thank you,” said Stevens.
“
“ It isn’t the size of the gift that matters, but the size of the heart that gives it.

For the past 13-years, Tim Horton’s Brockville locations have partnered with the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation to raise funds through the Smile Cookie Campaign to purchase vital medical equipment items for Brockville General Hospital. In 2020, Tim Hortons Brockville decided to raise funds for Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training for front line staff in Brockville General Hospital’s Emergency Department. A total of $28,244 was raised for this training which will see that emergency room staff receive this training as an important tool with dealing with individuals in crisis.
From Tim Horton coffee donations to painted rocks, these messages show just some of the ways our community stayed connected and showed gratitude to the frontline workers at BGH.
In a show of support for the communities in Nova Scotia affected by the mass shooting tragedy, Brockville residents, Catherine and John Macdonald donated Tim Hortons’ Nova Scotia Strong doughnuts to the staff at Brockville General Hospital as a thank you to front line staff.
On May 6th, 2020 Burnbrae Farms Ltd. reached out to the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation with a generous gift in the amount of $5,000 to assist in the fight against COVID-19 at Brockville General Hospital.
In April 2020, Brockville’s Chinese Community made a $6,385 gift that was raised from donations made by the Chinese Community’s families and businesses in support of Brockville General Hospital’s caregivers. The Chinese Community noted in a shared letter that the raised funds are a token of their appreciation for the hard work and services the doctors, nurses and front line staff provide to the community.
In April 2020, the BDHF launched its COVID-19 emergency matching campaign fund. The public stepped up $49,982 was raised. With these funds, the BDHF was able to purchase to ventilators for BGH’s Intensive Care Unit.
During the week of Feb. 5th-14th, 2020 the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation (BDHF) collaborated with the Brockville Real Canadian Superstore for the Foundation’s “Show Your Heart” Campaign. Superstore shoppers were given the opportunity to donate $2 at the cash during the week of the campaign with all proceeds going directly in support of the Brockville General Hospital’s (BGH) Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. A total of $1,969 was raised. The whole focus of the Show Your Heart Campaign was to bring an awareness that a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program operates out of BGH. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program offers a customized program that assists patients following a cardiac event.
WHAT IS THE FOUNDATION’S SIgNATURE EvENT?
The Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament, and the Heart and Solstice events are the Foundation’s signature events. The Spring Time in Paris Gala held in April 2015 was another example of a signature event.
WHAT IS A THIRD PART EvENT?
Third Party event are created and hosted by community individuals and groups to raise funds. Each event targets a specific equipment or program need. Some examples are:
• The 30-Hour Palliative Care Telethon
• Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign
HOW IMPORTANT ARE THIRD PART y EvENTS?
The Foundation relies on the support and generosity of our community groups to host events that not only fundraise for specific needs within BGH, but also raise awareness about the equipment or service in need of support. Third Party Events are critical to the Foundation’s mandate to support the hospital and vital to maintaining our connections with the people we serve.
Each year, the Foundation conducts a special fundraising effort called the Annual Appeal. Its purpose is to raise funds for a specialized piece of equipment. The Annual Appeal is done by a mass direct mail out to all donors who have donated to the foundation in the past. The Annual Appeal is one way that the foundation is able to purchase a large hospital equipment item.
WHy DOES BgH NEED FUNDS FROM THE FOUNDATION TO PURCHASE HOSPITAL EqUIPMENT?
In Ontario, the government funds the daily operation and administration of hospitals. However, hospitals are not permitted to use operational dollars to purchase hospital equipment. It is through our generous donors that the foundation is able to raise the necessary dollars to purchase specialized equipment for BGH.
The foundation is fortunate to have the support and generosity of our many community partners and donors through Leeds & Grenville. The foundation’s success is only achieved through the ongoing support that is so graciously given.
Never resting on our past accomplishments, our mission is to ensure that our community hospital has the resources to provide quality patient care. “
