NEW YEAR AND A NEW START AT THE FIS FIS is the representative body for the £10 billion finishes and interiors sector in the UK and we have started 2019 by strengthening our team with the appointment of Nigel Higgins as Technical Engagement Manager. Nigel has extensive experience working across the sector for some of the most respected and recognisable companies over the course of his career. Iain McIlwee, FIS CEO said “we are delighted to welcome Nigel to the team, this is a new role that we have created to improve engagement, both from a supporting delivery and active listening perspective. It is vital to ensure that as many voices as possible are steering our work so that we deliver against our core values of supporting members, raising standards, improving safety, enhancing productivity and driving innovation in the finishing and interiors sector”. Nigel will be splitting his time between supporting the FIS working groups, expanding wider industry engagement work and most importantly helping to support the ambitious membership growth plans of the FIS. Nigel Higgins, Technical Engagement Manager said “I have spent all my working life in interiors, from a family involved in partitions, I have been proud to work for contractors, distributors and manufacturers who have fed my passion for innovation and high-quality commercial interiors. Working for the FIS will allow me to share my knowledge for the benefit of, and add value to the members, and join an organisation that is the voice of this dynamic and diverse industry”

AN INDUSTRY LEADING TURNKEY PACKAGE A family-owned business with a strong commitment to customer service, Cardinal has been in operation for 30 years this year. Cardinal provides an end-to-end service. Whether a client wants to draw upon its expertise in design, manufacture, interior fit-out, mechanical and electrical services, or all these elements in a fully project managed turnkey solution, the Bradford-based business is able to deliver. Its track record speaks for itself; indicative of the company’s standing as a leader within the sector and its ability to meet or exceed clients’ needs. Cardinal enjoys a diverse client base including those in the retail and education sectors as well as residential, healthcare and leisure. Rightly proud of its inspirational interior fit out packages across the UK and abroad, the company’s turnkey package is supported by

a 150,000 sq.ft. UK manufacturing facility and 180,000 sq.ft. logistics operation. Alongside this sits its wholly owned Chinese Office, which has been sourcing product in the Far East for 18 years. Drawing upon the above and its in-house expertise and experience, Cardinal has the capacity to take on a client’s project from beginning to end with the flexibility, creative flair and the skill of a business committed to excellence and driven by best practice principles. A family-owned business, Cardinal is proud to have been in operation for 30 years this year. Throughout that time it has established many long-term relationships, particularly in the retail sector, where, for example, it has worked with Marks and Spencer for the last three decades. The company’s initial success was found-

ed upon manufacturing shopfitting equipment in joinery and metal, for clients in the retail sector. Utilising its diverse industry knowledge and the expertise of its team to foresee trends, Cardinal diversified over 15 years ago with the introduction of Cardinal Project Management, which provides strip-out, refurbishment and fit-out services including full design and build works. This enabled the company to reinforce its presence in the retail and commercial market offering not only the opportunity to design and manufacture shop equipment but install it too. Ever-evolving, Cardinal’s vertical integration has seen it introduce a plastics manufacturing capability, which delivers to major retailers such as Matalan, Debenhams and others, whilst it now also boasts a design and devel-

This includes conceptual design, space planning and interior design strategy, product and equipment design, prototype development and ultimately installation. Cardinal supports this capability with planned and reactive maintenance for the full life cycle of the building. The success of this holistic approach has enabled it to diversify further (such as fitting out hotels, educational establishments and carehomes) with new clients emerging from the commercial sector (including leisure, healthcare and education) alongside one-off bespoke packages for customers such as Westfield shopping centres. “Having all those capabilities available to us is great because we can offer a full turnkey package,” says Client Director, Dean Anderson, “but it also means we can tailor a package based on client need with some coming to us for a specific service, be that design, manufacture or install. That flexibility, coupled with the now diverse markets we work in, means we’re busy all-year round.” It’s about understanding your strengths and remaining flexible, adds Dean. “When we have a customer in, most importantly we listen and have a good look at what they need.

INTERIORS SPECIAL CARDINAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT We’re eager to tell our customers what we’re best at and tailor any and all elements of the design and build to their specification and requirements. If we end up only doing part of the project, whether that be manufacturing from someone else’s design or carrying out the fitout, we know we’re playing a vital role in making that project a success. “Yet, when customers want to work with us from the design stage we can give them an immersive introduction to their package through our VR suite; by having that capability – and by possessing some very talented designers in-house – we can often capture the manufacture and installation element of the project. Ultimately, by having that talent at the outset of a project, we’re able to drive that quality throughout the project and deliver seamlessly at the other end.” It helps, of course, having access to a state of the art manufacturing facility. Cardinal has a track record of minimising process costs and maximising efficiencies as part of its Lean Manufacturing Principles. Machinery employed includes Fibre Optic laser cutting and robot welding plants, automatic lathes and press brakes. Efficiency is closely monitored using a barcoded production management system. This continuously times processes to deliver up-to-the-minute stock and work in progress reports. Where clients have demanding deadlines turnaround times can be accelerated. This diverse infrastructure has made it possible to grow Cardinal’s presence in construction. Michael Brearey is the newly appointed Construction Director and has some dynamic plans to enhance the business’s presence in this market. “For many years we’ve been known as a shopfitting business and we want to maintain our reputation in the sector; but we know we can grow that element of the business alongside the other departments, construction being one of them. We’ve already completed substantial construction projects including restaurants, hotels and even a hospitality boat on the River Thames. It is these sorts of projects we want to push forward with.” Now, importantly, Cardinal can complete all aspects of the construction process but, as Michael says, “if a client wants to cherry pick one of our services, design for example, that is also okay. We like to try to take away the headache of building from our clients to offer them a high-end service that can be tailored to their exacting needs.” Michael believes the VR capability is a great benefit to the company’s construction

INTERIORS SPECIAL CARDINAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT endeavours as it allows clients to see in a lifelike environment what the finished product is going to look like. “It has proven popular with our construction clients”, he says. Importantly, thanks in part to its manufacturing background, Cardinal recognises the importance of a robust health and safety management system. “It’s paramount. We have our own in-house health and safety team supported by external experts, and we’re an ISO registered company not just for Quality but for Health and Safety and Environmental. “For some companies it might be just a badge, but that’s not the case here. It isn’t about resting on your laurels but a process of continual improvement. That means going out each day and auditing our processes to ensure we are meeting the parameters our board have set and then driving best practice from that. We’ve recently been awarded four and a half stars from Considerate Contractors and we’re accredited to CHAS, Safe Contractor and Achilles, amongst others.”

We have our own in-house health and safety team supported by external experts, and we’re an ISO registered company not just for Quality but for Health and Safety and Environmental. This is indicative of Cardinal’s qualities across the board and why it has been able to secure a number of construction projects. One of the more interesting – and challenging – was its work for Sodexo on the hospitality boat known as “Symphony”. A specialist company was appointed to carry out drydock work on the vessel but failed to complete on time which saw the project included in Cardinal’s package of works. Michael says, “We still managed to complete our package on time while attending to the additional work which included a significant amount of variations the client instructed us to complete. It was vital we handed the boat over to the client prior to the lucrative Christmas period for the hospitality boat, which we did.” It was a pleasing project to be involved with because it showcased Cardinal’s array BUILDING DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION MAGAZINE

The construction division continues to go from strength to strength with a wide variety of different projects being completed across various sectors. REDEFINING THE MODERN WORKSPACE Bulb Interiors are interior fit-out specialists in the laboratory & office sectors Bulb Interiors’ enviable reputation has been built upon its expertise in interior fit-out in the laboratory and office environment but this successful business’s growth is indicative of its comprehensive capabilities and the dynamic creativity of its in-house team. That has driven its defining feature: building relationships with clients. Just a few months ago, after successfully completing two laboratory projects at the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus, Bulb was awarded a third project on

the campus. The company, which also offers workplace consultancy services, building appraisal, project management and cost control, has begun working on office and laboratory fit-out across two floors at the world-renowned institution. The project comes as Bulb completed office fit-out work at the Arlington Business Park in Berkshire for APAM for which it had worked on many projects previously. The business park has recently undergone a complete transformation with many amenities added including an on-site café and gym (fitted-out by Bulb)

and the bespoke designed Floating Pavilion, providing meeting space for tenants. The client is a global software company that has outgrown its existing premises (also fitted-out by Bulb) and is moving into a larger space at the park. As these clients have found out, Bulb does just create inspiring places to work but in redefining the workspace it helps increase productivity in environments including corporate offices, high-tech laboratory spaces, list X buildings and data centres. Founded in 2006, it has forged long-term relationships with clients across

London and elsewhere in the UK, offering expertise in consultancy, design and build. From initial consultancy through to completion, Bulb works closely with clients to create a space specific to requirements. Combing aesthetics and practically, those who have drawn upon the company’s talent have come to recognise its creativity, passion and intelligence in creating functional spaces that exceed expectations on quality, programme and budget. Says the company, “We blend business acumen and design skills to produce working envi-

Our wealth of experience and technical knowledge allow us to respond to your business needs and develop your working practices, whilst creating inspiring places to work and succeed.” Exampling its skill, Bulb worked on a project for a global software firm in Berkshire. Following the successful growth and acquisition of an existing client, the creation of new office accommodation including reception, meeting rooms, offices, phone booth, and feature break out area were needed. New office sit/stand furniture installation to corporate guidelines was also part of the project. Collaborating with the client project manager on design development, furniture, and AV requirements, Bulb delivered new offices including acoustically treated rooms, with individually controlled

air conditioning and electrical systems. Laboratory fit-out and refurbishment raises specific challenges and often means works must take place in a controlled environment. “With our experience of delivering projects within the scientific, healthcare and technology markets, Bulb Interiors bring together a team of experienced specialists to provide a ‘turnkey’ solution for the design and installation of your new laboratory facility,” notes the company. “We develop a compliant fitout or refurbishment package to suit your needs and budget and

26

can provide advice and guidance throughout the project. Whether you have specific health and safety considerations, require safe, secure storage for chemicals, bio hazardous materials or need to develop a clean room environment we have the expertise to deliver the solution.” Driven by its consultative approach, Bulb’s prime objective is always to deliver a high quality solution. This is achieved by spending time gaining a clear understanding of goals and being prepared to challenge pre-existing ideas where necessary. “You can bring us in at the be-

ginning of the project to develop concepts and designs but we are equally suited to provide a build and fit-out service from designs provided. Our three-step Laboratory Fit-out Process is: Define Client Needs; Design, Plan & Procure; Develop, Deliver & Cost Control.” Complementing this, Bulb has been delivering commercial office and laboratory fit-outs in London and around the UK since 2006. “Our specialist fit-out service, brings together our expertise and flair in design, fit-out, furniture and post-project support. “We’ll streamline our flexible

services to specifically cover your needs, so whether you are seeking a ‘Traditional Build’ approach where we work with your chosen team of designers, or you prefer to appoint us on a ‘Design and Build’ basis, we have the skills and resources to manage your fit-out successfully. “Taking full responsibility for your project, we deliver on time and budget giving you maximum peace-of-mind. Our team work together to transform your workplace producing finished space that not only looks stunning, but promises improved efficiency and productivity. Our dedicated service also extends to co-ordinating and managing full-scale moves; from the new fit-out & installation to packing and removal services.” Other skills include Landlord Refurbishment and Tenant Refurbishment services. Bulb is an expert in office refurbishment and development of the inner potential of office spaces. “Our refurbishment services are focused on landlord and owner led schemes, revitalising your property and returning it to a high Cat A standard to enhance and refresh its rentable market value, quickly and in a cost effective manner.

INTERIOR FIT-OUT BARLOW INTERIORS

CLIENT FOCUSED, QUALITY AND COMPETITIVE

Barlow Interiors provide build, fit out and project management services Founded all the way back in 1875 by the Barlow family, Barlow Interiors is the oldest construction company still in existence in Sheffield, as well as one of the oldest running in the north of England. A family run organisation both then and to this date, the organisation is still owned by the Barlow family, but has understandably evolved considerably in terms of both service and capacity over its many years of successful operation. 30

Barlow.indd 30

Barlow Interiors was originally founded to provide a client focused, quality and competitive product for clients across multiple sectors. Within this remit, the organisation has had considerable success within the retail market, but recent years have also seen the company taking on increased workloads for commercial offices, high-end residential, hotels and leisure, as well as for the food and beverage sector. Although the core business remains, and perhaps always will remain, within the retail sector, the organsation’s stretching into these markets has allowed for it to gain con-

siderably broader expertise when it comes to interiors. When it comes to the product provided, Barlow Interiors is able to cover everything from undertaking fit-outs within an existing plan and specification all the way up to design and build services, with turnkey, bespoke solutions. Through partnerships with leading design houses and the incredible wealth of expertise within its own four walls, the company is able to offer a completely end-to-end service to clients when required, including MEP design. The organisation also offers services for dilapidation as well as planned and reac-

tive maintenance (often being able to act within a very short response time). Where Barlow Interiors comes into its own, however, is in the company’s approach to service delivery. Thanks to the family culture which still remains strong throughout the business, the company is known to develop far closer and more personable relationships with its key clients, as well as be considerably more flexible to their needs and requirements. Flexibility in this respect covers everything from the ambitions a client may have from a project all the way through to the scale of the service specified by the client. To learn more about how the business operates, we spoke with Richard Hall, Managing Director of Barlow Interiors, who explained: “We like to listen to our clients. With a lot of bigger companies you’ll find they might try to tell the client what they want, as opposed to listening to a client and managing their expectations. We have client focused teams and try to induce that familiarity around brand nuances and how client teams work, as well as how they like to be serviced. Some of our clients require their hand holding a little because they’re not that experienced in construction, and others might have a property team in place and fully understand things. It’s all about aligning the right athlete for the event really.” Then looking at the actual type of service provided, he continued: “What we try to do and offer to our clients is not just about how we build something, but the maintainability, buildability, and future-proofing. We can look at a design and potentially suggest ways to spend a little bit more money now but save a lot more money in the future. It’s also about familiarity with clients, as some will refresh spaces every 3, 5, or 10 years, and so it’s about familiarising yourself with their approach to see where you BUILDING DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION MAGAZINE

INTERIOR FIT-OUT BARLOW INTERIORS can value-engineer decisions to offer them the added benefit.” In providing a service which is so tailored to the needs of client businesses, maintaining expertise within Barlow Interiors has proven crucial. As such, the organisation works hard to bring talent into the company, with specific focus being placed on finding the right, quick thinking and quick acting attitudes which can help develop new ways of doing things or ways that extra value can be added to services. Supported further by a clear focus on internal development, progression and sourcing, this also sees individuals provided with ample opportunity to stay and succeed with the company too. Alongside the clear focus on providing a strong service to clients, we also see a similar level of importance placed on providing services in a responsible manner. Including both health and safety alongside sustainability and environmental concerns, clear lengths are gone to in en-

“We’re looking to get more exposure in the office fit-out sector, which we’re already doing. We’re looking at some very nice jobs in the city of London at the minute”

suring that services can be provided both safety and efficiently, which allows the organisation to pass on some of the cost savings it achieves and stay competitive in the marketplace. “Health and safety underpins everything we do, and it’s the most important part of delivery for us. I believe in setting that culture from the top down. I spend a lot of money on training to make sure everyone is industry accredited and, when we’re pre-qualifying our subcontractor base, we try to instill those same levels of safety governance on them,” explained Richard Hall. On lean processes and environmental concerns, he also added: “It saves waste, but it also saves time on programme. Getting your delivery right on time and not having to store things around will all add benefit to the programme. In real terms this will reduce prelim cost, and clients are very happy with that and it gives us some advantage when tendering.”

Looking to the future, Barlow Interiors has clear plans for the continued growth of the business, but with a priority on sustainable growth with clients that the organisation can develop a relationship with over time. Further to this, the company plans to continue branching out from the retail market and offer similarly high quality services to a whole host of other sectors. On this note, Richard Hall clarified: “We’re looking to get more exposure in the office fitout sector, which we’re already doing. We’re looking at some very nice jobs in the city of London at the minute, and we’re forming strategy partnerships with some great M&E companies and framework specialists for comms rooms. It’s about changing the perception of us being a shopfitter, because we are so much more than that. While our bread and butter might be retail, we definitely have the capacity and the skills to deliver in those other markets.”

Safe Contractor Association. Meronden is also certified with the Quality Management System ISO 9001:2015 standard and annually update health and safety training via Human Focus. Staff training and Health and Safety legislation is important to Meronden and is reviewed regularly. “This is reflected by an outstanding Health and Safety record. All of our Contract Managers hold certificates for the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS), PASMA Scaffold Tower Training, Asbestos Awareness and Emergency First Aid as standard”. The implementation of an effective Environmental Management System (EMS) has also enabled Meronden to reduce its carbon footprint. By quantifying and recycling materials and reducing deliveries it has seen a reduction in both waste materials and project costs. Meronden’s track record speaks for itself, since its incorporation in 1981, it has built long-term relationships working with clients on both multiple projects and oneoff contracts over the years. The company has a legacy of delivering exceptional quality of work, with many years of experience together with excellent product knowledge

Meronden’s design and install team worked closely with the client to create a showpiece office building with an industrious feel from which to orchestrate their media and publishing operations. and an established work force Meronden draws on a pool of knowledge and offers a truly unique experience for each client. “Though each project is unique the resolve of our workforce remains the same, commitment to perform and deliver an outstanding project, the acute attention to detail and the ability to think on our feet makes us a reliable, adaptable and resourceful project management team”. Further exampling of its expertise, the company carried out a multi-million-pound office refurbishment for a client in Ham-

mersmith. The work, including cat A and B fit-out and saw Meronden transform a derelict former bakery into a contemporary space for digital media professionals. The design and install team worked closely with the client to create a showpiece office building with an industrious feel from which to orchestrate the client’s media and publishing operations. The transformation added value to the property and gave a new lease of life to this bustling arena. For an office fit-out in Reigate, Surrey, Meronden worked closely with the internal design team of an international property developer to create a high end visionary office from which the client could demonstrate the luxurious quality of their bespoke service to a select client base whilst maintaining a functional and productive office environment. The project was delivered on time and within budget ensuring client satisfaction was once again achieved. As ambitious as ever, Meronden remains committed to excellence, ensuring it can continue to maintain strong relationships with clients over the long term while growing its presence in the marketplace in order to develop new ones.

INTERIORS SPECIAL 8BUILD

PASSION, EXPERIENCE, TALENT Expert in a range of construction disciplines including new-build and refurbishment

Founded by eight passionate, experienced and driven construction industry professionals, 8build was created in 2005 to provide leading fit-out to the construction industry. Since then, the organisation has diversified into a range of construction disciplines including new-build, and refurbishment projects, but still retains the fit-out expertise that established the business over 13 years ago. Roll forward to current day, and the organisation has achieved considerable success in these markets, with consistent annual growth and the business growing its reputation for technical expertise, year-on-year. From 2005 to now, 8build has delivered projects across a broad range of sectors, including: commercial, residential, healthcare, education, arts and leisure, retail, data centres, and historic. Within the highly competitive construction market, 8build is able to stand out for a number of reasons. Firstly, the organisation takes a very different approach to client interaction; instead of attempting to roll out bread-and-butter projects, the organisation looks to work very closely with its clients in a bid to understand their needs and requirements. Areas of concern include both aspects of design (with considerable collaboration to suit) and ensuring the timely completion of projects due to the specific requirements for project completion. To learn more about 8build and the unique approach it takes to contracts, we spoke with Nigel Bellamy, Director of 8build. He explained: “It’s about understanding the client’s business needs and giving them a good service. For fit-out, you have to be producing a quality product every time BUILDING DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION MAGAZINE

INTERIORS SPECIAL 8BUILD and understand the client’s business case and why it’s so important that the building must be completed by a certain date, or about a new business arm which needs to be up and running by a certain date. Having learned these things over many years, you can transpose that into new build and clients can get the benefit of having that understanding. It’s made us a lot fitter by doing that, rather than the tried and tested usual approach.” Key to supporting such a strong service is the culture of the organisation itself, the organisation has always had something of a family feel and culture. Over the years, this has been expanded further, with numerous family members being brought into the organisation and individuals being brought up through the company and being made to feel a part of it – both in terms of respect and recognition, as well as financially through shares in the company itself. As Nigel explained: “It’s a key factor because it’s not just a job of work, it’s a family business who care and want to deliver an excellent product for our clients. Whilst all the founders are all shareholders in the business, the next 25 senior staff have also now been rewarded with shares in the business. Everyone now sees it as their company, not our com-

pany, and the harder they work and the better feedback they get, the more they benefit as well.” Alongside providing a leading service to clients, 8build also maintains a clear focus on responsible business practices. Especially in terms of health and safety, the organisation takes a very proactive approach to ensure an absolute standard of safety management. A Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) accredited contractor, the organisation has a clear focus on training and development, not just for employee safety but also for their well-being and mental health.

This is also coupled with clear investments being made into technologies which will take employees away from areas of risk through automation and robotics technology in the demolition phase. Looking to the future, 8build has clear plans to continue growing and developing its business. Despite uncertainty from Brexit, the organisation will be looking to continue investing back into its business to organically grow workloads and create new, better ways of doing things – both internally, and also for the benefit of clients. The organisation will also be increasingly focusing on growing the amount

of work it completes within the education sector, theatres, the arts, and culture as it works to update and improve dated assets in line with the demands of the modern consumer. On this note, Nigel clarified: “As a private company, we are forward-thinking in terms of people, training, and we have invested heavily into a new IT system. Despite concerns about Brexit, we’re prepared to invest in the business and take a leap of faith which other businesses aren’t always as prepared to do. We’re still taking on a lot of graduates and apprentices every year, so we’re quite brave in that respect, we’re also looking for steady and sustained growth, so it’s about juggling being brave and sensible at the same time.” Beyond the planned expansion in existing markets in London, Cambridge, and Singapore where it has offices, 8build is also looking to expand its operations further in Asia and has established a new office in Hong Kong to service as a base for this. In addition, the organisation also looks to build on previous success in Singapore and establish a name for itself in other asian cities.
