“Yes, I have tricks in my pocket, I have things up my sleeve. But I am the opposite of a stage magician. He gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion. To begin with, I turn back time. I reverse it to that quaint period, the thirties” - Tom Wingfield, the narrator’s opening lines in The Glass Menagerie.
Inspired by his own memories of his youth, Tennessee Williams called his play The Glass Menagerie, “a memory play”. For Williams, those memories were bittersweet, Tom (Tennessee Williams's real first name) like Tom Wingfield the play’s narrator, worked a dead end job at the Consolidated Shoe Company in 1930’s St. Louis. There he stacked shoe boxes all day, daydreaming all the while of becoming a writer. Young Tennessee lived in a cramped apartment with his nagging mother and his beloved sister, Rose. Rose, like the shy Laura Wingfield at the center of Williams' moving play, had her own collection of glass animals which she kept on a menagerie of shelves. Young Tennessee, like Tom in the play, felt trapped not only by his job but by his responsibilities to his mother and family.
And though young Tennessee Williams' life seemed small and insignificant, his dreams were big. He wrote constantly, secretly at the shoe factory and at the dining room table at home. “Write what you know” is what young writers are told and young Tennessee (Tom) Williams took that to heart.
But it wasn’t just the story he knew first hand that excited him, it was how he could use the magic and beauty of words to tell that story. Williams is celebrated for his beautiful language, which though lush and romantic, sounds naturalistic as well. He was influenced by the rhythm of the South having spent his early years in Mississippi where he lived with his grandparents. He retained his southern accent, so much so that college classmates dubbed him “Tennessee”, a name Williams would soon adopt as his pen name.
Williams was also a theatrical visionary embracing new ways to tell a story onstage. He was ahead of his time. He had visions of presenting The Glass Menagerie with elaborate projections, special lighting and sound to evoke the sense that this story unfolds within the memories of Tom the narrator. Many of Williams’s original staging ideas were dropped in the original 1944 production though Williams included notes on them in the
Continued on Page 5
published editions of the play.
And so for our 2025 production, here at the Dock Street, our talented design team has embraced Williams’s central idea that the play is memory and used that as the inspiration for the imaginative staging you will see tonight. While the play is certainly centered in reality it is seen through the wistful eyes of memory and reflection and seems to float there before us in a vision of a real moment in time.
Further enhancing the production, we have the moving original incidental music for the production that was created by Broadway composer Mel Marvin. Marvin, a legendary Broadway and Opera Composer now working in New York and recently retired as a professor at NYU, produced his first work here at the Dock Street almost 60 years ago.
Charleston Stage has produced The Glass Menagerie twice before, but the last production was in 1997 so I was honored when I was asked to return to mount this all new production, especially considering that it’s one of my very favorite plays. Not only was I given a terrific design team but a remarkable professional cast as well. My longtime friend and colleague Marybeth Clark heads the cast as Amanda, the mother in the play (based on Tennessee Williams’s own mother). Luke Shaw who plays the Gentleman Caller has been performing with Charleston Stage since he was in kindergarten. And these Charleston Stage veterans are joined by two outstanding members of this year’s talented Resident Professional Acting Company, Sam Majors as Tom (the young Tennessee Williams) and Abigail Vernon as Laura (based on Tennessee Williams’s sister Rose).
It has been a great pleasure to return to this special play, one of my favorites and to work with this talented team of performers and creatives once more working to present you, our audience with “truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.”
Julian Wiles, Founder and Director Emeritus

This high-energy and empowering theatrical extravaganza brings the beloved story of Elle Woods to the stage with a vibrant burst of pink and a whole lot of heart. Based on the hit film starring Reese Witherspoon and winner of 3 Olivier Awards, this musical follows Elle, a fashionable and seemingly superficial sorority girl, as she defies expectations and enrolls in Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. As Elle discovers her own strengths and intelligence, the story unfolds into a hilarious and heartwarming journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and the pursuit of justice. Packed with catchy musical numbers, dynamic choreography, and the iconic "Bend and Snap," Legally Blonde is an electrifying and entertaining production that proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style.
Marybeth is in her twenty-sixth season with Charleston Stage. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in Tolland, CT. She has a degree in theatre/ performance from the University of South Florida, where she later taught. She was cast in her first show at an Equity theatre at 18 years of age in Tampa. She worked as an actor in professional theatres throughout the Southeast for ten years before settling in Charleston in 1994 with her husband, actor Victor Clark. She was a member of the theatre faculty at Charleston County’s School of the Arts for middle and high school students. Though she moved to Charleston planning on retiring from theatre and starting a family, she taught and directed for Charleston Stage part-time beginning in 1997 before joining the company full-time the following year.
She and Vic are the proud parents of 2 daughters, Lila and Prentice. Lila recently is working towards her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at MUSC and Prentice teaches special needs students at the Washington Center in Greenville, SC and married last December. Marybeth and Vic do not have an empty nest but share their home with Marybeth's mother and many adopted dogs and cats.
In her time at Charleston Stage she has directed over 70 shows, favorites include: Kinky Boots, Of Mice and Men, Mamma Mia! and Elf The Musical and most recently Beautiful. She began the Resident Professional Acting program her second year with the company and continues to hire, train, and supervise our young professional actors. As of Season 47, we have had 149 Resident Actors complete the program. The unexpected joy of the Resident Actor program is Marybeth now not only gets notified when they book theatre jobs but also gets wedding invitations and baby announcements!
As an actor for Charleston Stage, Marybeth has appeared in Shakespeare in Love, Helium, You Can’t Take It With You, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Steel Magnolias, A Christmas Carol and most recently as Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit.

Immerse yourself in the magical world of theatre with Charleston Stage’s Director’s Circle, an exclusive society designed for those who cherish both the arts and a sense of community. As a member, you are invited to experience the thrill of opening nights combined with a meticulously curated suite of members-only benefits. In essence, membership transcends the traditional theatre experience beyond the normal.
The tax-deductible portion of your dues is a vital contribution to Charleston Stage's Education Programs, impacting over 20,000 Lowcountry youth each season. These initiatives are central to our mission to democratize theatre access, ensuring every child, regardless of background, can experience the transformative power of the arts. By joining the Director’s Circle, you not only enjoy exclusive evenings of entertainment but also actively foster the development of both the next generation of artists and of culturally aware audiences. Your support enables us to offer these programs widely, nurturing young minds and hearts with the magic of theatre.
