Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses support your learning throughout your career, whether you want to update or refresh your knowledge, expand your expertise or explore new areas of practice. Our CPD Unit facilitates and manages the Faculty’s continuing professional education and training portfolio in Health, Social Care and Life Sciences. All our courses are designed to aid your career progression within a friendly, supportive and encouraging environment. Our courses vary in length and are flexible in delivery, allowing you to fit your professional development around your work and personal commitments.
Whether you’re keen to graduate, continue with postgraduate study, or you simply want to learn something new, study with us will make the most of your skills. You’re free to select the modules that suit you, whether that’s a whole programme of study, the components that relate to your interests, a single standalone module, or a non-accredited course. If you complete a module then decide you’d like to continue your studies, you can put the credits you’ve earned towards a qualification with our Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (CATS). UNITING CARE, SUPPORT AND EXCELLENCE The support you need to manage study, work and family life As the CPD team, we recognise that studying has to fit around your work, family and social commitments. We also understand that you may need help in updating your skills if it’s been a while since you last undertook a formal programme of study. So, as part of our support, you’ll have a module leader and a pathway/programme leader to guide you. In addition, our Professional Development Department has dedicated staff – including our Professional Navigators – who are experts in

academic skills development and academic progression. CHOOSING A COURSE What courses are there?
Credit bearing courses
Our CPD courses range from short, non-credit bearing courses to assessed modules which can count towards an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification.
We also offer short credit bearing courses. These assessed modules can count towards a Bachelor’s degree (Level 6) or a Master’s degree (Level 7).
Our CPD non-credit bearing short courses are perfectly suited to healthcare professionals looking to gain new skills for the workplace. These are for people who have a particular interest or would like to gain another skill. Please note that CPD non-credit bearing short courses do not include academic credit: only our accredited courses count towards a qualification.
We recognise that balancing study, family, social and work commitments is crucial to your success, so our courses are run flexibly from September to June. Non-credit bearing courses and workshops Non-credit bearing courses can vary in length from half a day to five days and are attended by health, social care and life sciences practitioners who wish to update their skills and knowledge. WHAT AWARDS CAN I ACHIEVE? WHERE CAN I GET ADVICE? We offer a wide range of degree awards at undergraduate and postgraduate level. You can choose modules from across our Health, Social Care and Life Sciences programmes, focusing on a specific area of practice or selecting modules to suit your development. At undergraduate level (Level 6) you can achieve awards that lead to a BSc (60 credits) or BSc (Hons) (120 credits). There are also a range of Level 7 awards you can achieve, including: • Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) • Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) • Master’s degree (180 credits).

Our Professional Navigators are there to help you as a health, social care or life sciences professional to choose the right CPD courses. Professional Studies in Health and Social Care (online) – Advanced Diploma/BSc/BSc (Hons) This online course is for health and social care practitioners working in the UK, EU and overseas. Applicable to practitioners from diverse health and social care settings, including nurses, assistant practitioners, operating department practitioners, paramedics and administrators, the course is an exciting opportunity to learn together online, while at the same time topping up to degree level.

Midwifery (20 month programme) This fast track course builds upon the skills and knowledge qualified adult nurses already have, meaning you can qualify as a registered midwife in 20 months.
Specialist Practitioner Community Health Nursing – BSc (Hons)/PgDip This programme is available at either degree or postgraduate level (award will be dependent on entry qualifications).
Specialist Practitioner Community Health Nursing – BSc (Hons)/PgDip If you have a desire become a Health Visitor or School Nurse our engaging course will train you to become a knowledgeable and skilled health care practitioner. Delivered as 50 per cent theory and 50 per cent practice, you’ll develop a broad knowledge of the complex issues

of specialist practice. Successful completion makes you eligibility for entry onto the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s register and the recordable V100 nurse prescribing.
Specialist Community Public Health Nurse Programme (Health Visitor or School Nurse) – BSc (Hons)/PgDip If you’re a community nurse who wants to progress into work as a Specialist Practitioner then our specialist course will provide you with the learning and resources you need to become a clinical leader in your community.
Habilitation Work – Working with Children and Young People – BSc (Hons) Habilitation workers are specialists in the practical and emotional aspects of visual impairment for children and young people. Our course is designed to provide rehabilitation workers with the knowledge and skills to enable children and young people to become as independent as possible in relation to practical life skills. We are currently the only university to offer a Habilitation programme to qualified Rehabilitation Workers in the United Kingdom.
Specialist Complex Needs Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment) – BSc (Hons) This top-up degree is for qualified Rehabilitation Workers (Visual Impairment) who wish to take their expertise to the next level. You will learn specialist techniques to enhance your practice with adults who have a wide range of additional complex needs including deaf-blindness, dementia, mental health conditions and learning disabilities.
Radiography – PgCert/PgDip/MSc/standalone modules If you have a current qualification and registration as diagnostic radiographer, therapeutic radiographer, or other healthcare professional with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), or equivalent, then our postgraduate Radiography courses (and modules) can help you take the next step towards a career in extended or advanced practice as well as enhancing your qualifications. We ensure our Radiography courses are kept innovative and up to date, teaching you the skills needed to meet the ever-changing needs of this fastdeveloping sector and ensuring that the patient remains core to everything we do. Advanced Clinical Practice – PgCert/PgDip/MSc The Advanced Clinical Practice multi-professional programme is suitable for you if you’re a senior health practitioners – a nurse, midwife or other allied health professional – who is involved in hands-on care. This course will help you in your aim to design and deliver more effective patient services, and advance your careers.
Advanced Practice - MSc This internationally-recognised Master’s award is intended for nurses, midwives and members of allied health professions based in health-related settings outside of the UK.
Fundamentals of Primary Care Nursing (General Practice Nursing) - AdvDip/BSc (Hons)/GradCert If you are new in post as a General Practice (GP) Nurse, this course will equip you with all the core skills required for the role. It is aligned to the HEE Career Framework for General Practice.
Fundamentals of Primary Care Nursing (Nursing Homes) - AdvDip /BSc (Hons)/GradCert If you work in the Nursing or Care Home setting, this course will equip you with all the core skills required for the role and to further develop your career. 12
The course will develop your clinical and academic skills and prepare you develop as a practitioner leading the delivery of quality care. The focus will be on the adult resident in nursing and care home settings alongside generic community and primary care skills.
Public Health – PgCert/PgDip/MSc Public health research and practice is at the heart of tackling many of the world’s current threats to health. If have experience and a degree in Public Health or Health Promotion, this MSc Public Health course could enhance your career prospects, enabling you to progress on to senior roles at either operational, policy or commissioning level in a wide range of areas.
Safeguarding – PgCert/PgDip/MSc/standalone modules This flexible course allows you to either study a standalone module or complete a range of modules to gain either a postgraduate qualification in Safeguarding. This programme is designed for multi-disciplinary professionals with an interest in safeguarding children, young people and adults.

If you’re a health professional working in any clinical area where you have regular responsibility for the care of patients with diabetes, then this course is designed to meet your learning needs.
Our course will help you to develop your career as a healthcare business manager. Medical Ultrasound – PgCert/PgDip/MSc The course is aimed at qualified healthcare professionals – such as radiographers, midwives, nurses and doctors – who want to extend their field of expertise into the production and interpretation of diagnostic ultrasound images.
Mental Health – Approved Mental Health Practitioner – PgDip The key aim of this course is to promote and safeguard the wellbeing and welfare of people with mental health and their communities. This includes a strong commitment to inclusiveness, ADP, ensuring the principles of valuing diversity and equality are maintained through a person centred approach. Our course is relevant to the needs of employers, inter-professional practitioners and service users who are involved in AMHP work.

These courses can be on a variety of subjects suited to your organisation’s workforce development needs. CONSULTANCY A major strength of our Faculty is the knowledge, experience and skills that our staff have and can share. Our staff are available on a consultancy basis to enable organisations to develop services, such as the example described below. We are also building our consultancy through our Tissue Viability Practice Development Unit and Multiple Births Foundation, which act as a hubs for education and service development within these specialities.
Example: Consultancy activity is defined as the provision of expert advice or services to external clients in areas such as healthcare, industry and sport undertaken by academic staff. “The University encouraged me to be involved in consultancy due to the impact of my innovative approach to moving and handling training, and my research on utilising haptic/ vibration feedback to promote good posture through the use of specially-designed vibrating sensors. “This has been shown to be useful for industrial companies and certain sports like equestrian dressage and volleyball. They have been able to use my expertise in posture and positioning training. ”Consultancy work has also helped to develop research collaborations with moving and handling equipment companies, such as Linet. We have looked at the usefulness of Linet’s electric-profiling bed innovations through the use of our unique haptic suit, providing key training on the posture of patients and staff. We have also worked with Hill-Rom and Liko to demonstrate how good posture can be maintained when hoisting patients. This has enabled us to maintain longer term relationships with future funders, as well as develop partnerships with other areas.”
