George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station celebrates the life and career of our nation’s 41st president. The museum opened in 1997 and exhibits more than 90,000 artifacts, including a portion of the Berlin Wall, thousands of gifts from heads of state around the world and a WWII-era torpedo bomber aircraft. This, along with wonderful traveling exhibits, makes this a destination for approximately 140,000 visitors per year. Volunteers are needed especially for weekend shifts. The shifts are only 2 1/2 hours long and are for work in the museum, greeting visitors, starting the film in the media room, and taking photos in the Oval Office. If you have time to help on weekends, call Sharon Merrell at (979) 691-4012.

HOSTS – Help One Student to Succeed Do you have thirty minutes a week to give? Then the HOSTS program offers a perfect investment of your time for the greatest reward. This highly successful program is a well-planned and structured approach to helping children from Kindergarten – 2nd grade who need a little help in learning to read. Volunteers receive an orientation prior to beginning and will serve in the HOSTS lab room at school for approximately 10 visits during the six months the HOSTS program is in operation each school year.

Most of the children who have HOSTS volunteers will finish the year scoring on or above level on their reading inventory test. What a boost of confidence these young students experience when they master reading. It sets them up for success for the rest of their life and all for only thirty minutes a week. Contact the HOSTS teachers at one of these schools and schedule a day and time when you have 30 minutes to give.
