Best Real Estate Agent

2014

Kristi Fox Satsky, of Century 21 Beal, Inc., has been recognized for her dedication to helping clients buy and sell homes. She was voted as this year’s “Best Real Estate Agent” in the annual Readers’ Choice awards. Kristi has been a REALTOR® with Century 21 Beal since earning her real estate license in 2000. Before becoming a REALTOR® she worked in an unfulfilling career and knew she wanted more. She wanted to help people. Through her combined knowledge of the area, her desire to make a difference and her love for homes she found that real estate was the perfect fit. “Between my love of working with people and my passion for the home buying and selling experience, plus helping make dreams come true, my goal became giving each client my all,” Kristi said. “I love helping my buyers choose the perfect property that fits their needs, and really enjoy assisting sellers in the moving process. I am protective in nature, and that

spills over to my clients daily. My goal has always been to save them time, stress and money during their real estate adventure.” As a new agent, Kristi has built her business to selling over 100 homes each year.Shenowoffersherclientsprofessional photography, Youtube videos, individual property websites and more. Kristi’s staff are more than staff - they are family and an integral part of her business success. When it comes to the process of buying or selling their homes, Kristi wants clients to be excited. “Handing over the keys to their new home and seeing the pure joy in my client’s faces is such a huge reward for me. It makes me feel that I have really found my true calling,” she said. “I specialize in new construction, rural and farm and ranch properties and residential homes. I am also very well versed in investment properties. I am very much a listing agent, with premier marketing styles and experience to get a

home sold faster and for a higher price. My days on the market time is impressive and my negotiation skills are top notch!” Kristi believes what sets her apart from the competition is that she listens to each client’s wishes in order to find the right home for them. She strives for convenience, and welcomes questions and concerns. Kristi said she continues to offer services to buyers at no cost, which helps to build trust and long-lasting relationships. “But more importantly, my experience and knowledge of our real estate market sets me apart,” she added. “I am constantly learning, every day, to give my clients the best that I can in this changing world.” Kristi believes she won the award because the public knows they can count on her, and hundreds of clients have returned to her many times. Kristi said each year she has won quality service Pinnacle awards, as a result of surveys her clients return to Century 21. Most of her business is from repeat clients and referrals, she said, which shows they realize she looks out for her clients’ best interests. Kristi said she feels humbled by the award, and it is an honor to have loyal clients who have entrusted her with one of the biggest decisions in their lives.

Best Real Estate Office

2014

Century 21 Beal, Inc. focuses on excellent customer service for buyers and sellers of the Brazos Valley, as well as helping their agents develop careers worth having. They truly care about their customers, clients, agents and staff. That’s likely why The Eagle readers voted the company as the “Best Real Estate Office” in this year’s annual Readers’ Choice awards. Century 21 Beal, Inc. was founded by former owner, Jacob Beal, who was born and raised in Brazos County. The war was over in 1946 and Jacob wanted to come home to his family and friends and start a business. Mike Beal, son of Jacob Beal, continues the tradition of local, personal service as the top sales company in the Bryan/College Station. “Helping our clients buy and sell real estate, meeting THEIR goals, is the cornerstone of Century 21 Beal, Inc. Some clients want to be called often, some only want email and some want

text messages; yet EVERY client wants communication regarding their real estate sale or purchase. Every client deserves exceptional service and a knowledgeable agent and EVERY client is important to us. Our Realtors have many years of training and experience, and they employ that to help buyers and sellers buy and sell in the Brazos Valley,” said Beal. What sets Century 21 Beal apart from the competition is the attitude and experience of its management team, agents and staff members. Best Auto Body Shop

2014

The Eagle readers voted Varsity Ford Lincoln as this year’s Readers’ Choice winner for the “Best Auto Body Shop” – recognizing the dealership for its dedication to quality work and customer service. Varsity Ford Lincoln, located at 1351 Earl Rudder Freeway South in College Station, was moved from the bend in Bryan in 1995. The Collision Center was built at that time because the owner, Anthony Majors saw an opportunity to offer extended services to customers. Varsity Ford Lincoln, now owned by Majors and Mike Winot, has a fullservice collision center. “We pride ourselves on the quality of our work we provide and customer service,” said Robert Wagner, body shop manager. “We offer a lifetime paint warranty provided by our paint manufacturer, PPG. We use environmentally

friendly water-based paint. We have several insurance companies that we are a direct repair facility for. We work on all makes and models.” Wagner said he believes the center’s honesty and quality sets it apart from other shops in town. When he took over as manager in 2007, his primary goal was to focus on customer satisfaction and high quality work. Winning the award is an honor for Varsity Ford Lincoln, and Wagner said he believes it is a result of caring about customers. “I think we won because we relate to our customers and truly care about them,” he said. “They are not just another repair job to us; they are our customers and we like to make sure they are well taken care of.” He added that winning the award is a result of the staff ’s hard work

BEST IN TEXAS

and commitment to quality. “I think it’s awesome to be recognized for all the hard work and late hours that our team puts in,” he said. Since opening, Varsity Ford Lincoln has added additional buildings, and the Collision Center now has 17 employees. The dealership is also in the process of preparing for the launch of the 2015 Ford F-150, which has an exterior made completely of highgrade military strength aluminum, Wagner said. The Collision Center is ordering the proper tools and getting trained so that employees will be certified with Ford to do repairs on the vehicle. Varsity Ford Lincoln currently has plans for expanding and renovating its facility. Wagner said, “Bryan-College Station is growing like crazy, and so are we!” he said. “We will be expanding the showroom, updating the exterior and improving all of the customer facing areas of the store.” For more information on the Varsity Ford Collision Center, stop by the center, call 979-694-2022 or visit www.varsityfordtexas.com.

Best Jewelry Store

2014

Pleasure to Meet You

The first step in the DG custom design process involves David getting to know the customer, providing insight on the customer’s jewelry style.

Show & Tell

On what is usually a second meeting, David shows multiple sketches that he has drawn that reflect the customer’s preferences and personality.

Model

Once the design has been finalized, an actual size wax model is made. Depending on the design, either hand carving or a computer controlled mill is used to create the wax model

Breaking the Mold

The approved wax model is placed inside a flask, which is then filled with a special plaster called investment. This flask containing the wax surrounded by investment is

then placed inside a kiln, which heats to over 1,350 degrees in order to melt the wax away and harden the plaster. The end result is a void where the wax once was and a mold for metal to be poured inside- hence the name lost wax method.

Casting

The metal of choice is brought to its optimal melting point of up to 3,300 degrees. Then, the flask containing the mold is placed inside a crucible, which uses centrifugal force to draw the liquid metal into the plaster mold.

Design Revealed

While each custom piece bears its own unique story and inspiration, David Gardner and his team of jeweler’s commitment to excellence never wavers.

The flask is then temperature shocked, cracking the mold. The jeweler pulls away the plaster, exposing the design, then carefully files away excess metal and polishes the piece to prepare it for stones to be set.

Best Pizza

2014

Papa John’s has been making hot, tasty pizza since 1984, and The Eagle readers recognized the company’s dedication to quality pizza and service this year by voting it as the “Best Pizza” award recipient. Houston Pizza Venture has two Papa John’s locations in College Station. The first Papa John’s opened in 1984 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. John Schnatter, who founded the company, said he learned how to have a strong work ethic from his late father and late grandfather. As soon as he was old enough to work, he got his first job while in high school at a pizza joint in Jefferson. He started as a dishwasher and worked his way up to being a pizza maker. “That’s when I first saw my determination pay off,” Schnatter said. “But I also noticed something else. I noticed there was something

local pizza joints could provide that seemed to be missing from national pizza chains – a quality pizza delivered with excellent service right to the customer’s door. It was then that I realized my dream was to open my own pizza restaurant.” A second job at another pizzeria, while he attended college, taught him a lot about the business and solidified his desire to open his open pizza joint. After earning a business degree, he returned to Jefferson, where he learned his father’s tavern was struggling. He sold his prized 1972 Camaro Z28 to save the business, did some renovations to the tavern and started selling pizzas out of the back. In 1984, he opened his own pizza place called Papa John’s. Houston Pizza Venture, a Houston-based business, chose to open Papa John’s locations in

College Station because of the unique marketing opportunity based around the rich history and pride associated with the university, according to Papa John’s. Papa John’s provides quality pizza and service to the College Station area. The company also sets itself apart with community involvement, raising money for local schools and charities. Papa John’s officials believe the award was the result of staff members working hard every day to provide the highest quality food and service to customers.

Best Nurse

2014

At St. Joseph Health System, delivering expert care with compassion is at the heart of everything we do and the hallmark of our service to the Brazos Valley. It’s been our Mission since 1936. Amanda Goodenow, R.N., and Jennifer Collins, R.N., both employees at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, are examples of our Mission in action. Eagle readers have confirmed their support by selecting Amanda and Jennifer for the distinction of “Best Nurse” in the 2014 Readers’ Choice awards. Goodenow cares for patients in the stroke unit and has been employed by St. Joseph since 2004. Collins delivers care in the Day Stay unit and has been employed by St. Joseph since 1996. Together, they represent the expertise delivered through

compassionate care that defines the St. Joseph culture. The tradition of compassionate care represented by Collins and Goodenow began almost 80 years ago, thanks to our sponsors, the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio. Today, their legacy continues as St. Joseph Health System has grown to become an integrated health system with more than 2,300 team members. The system includes St. Joseph Regional Health Center, delivering the region’s highest level of trauma care, four community hospitals located in Bellville, Madisonville, Navasota and Caldwell, and more than a dozen other physician clinics and facilities throughout the region. St. Joseph Regional Health Center is also the only Level II Trauma Center within an 80-mile

T H E B R YA N - C O L L E G E S TAT I O N E A G L E

radius. This designation means St. Joseph has the expertise, equipment and protocols in place to care for every part of the patient and family’s experience. St. Joseph Health System also has Express Care clinics located throughout the community. These walk-in clinics require no appointment and provide services for non-emergency care. All Express Care clinics are open after hours, on weekends and holidays. For patients with busy schedules, the St. Joseph InQuicker service is also available, allowing patients to schedule their appointment time at an Express Care and skip the wait. InQuicker can be accessed from the St. Joseph website at www.stjoer.org or through the St. Joseph mobile phone app, SJNow. St. Joseph Health System is committed to meeting the changing healthcare needs of the Brazos Valley. As home to the area’s first nationally accredited chest pain center, stroke center, breast cancer center, and a cardiac rehab program, St. Joseph is always working to advance the healthcare services provided locally in this region.

Best Cellular Provider

2014

At AT&T, we are grateful once again to be named in The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice awards as the “Best Cellular Provider.” We are honored to receive this award for the eighth year in a row and look forward to continually providing Bryan/College Station with the best service possible through investments like Project VIP. The benefits of staying connected can be seen throughout our daily lives. From checking the news on your tablet to monitoring traffic before you start your daily commute, there are many ways that we can use the latest technologies, products and services to stay better connected to our world. In order to make sure that people throughout Bryan/College Station and across the country can get the most from the technologies available today, and in the future, AT&T has committed to a multibillion dollar investment plan called Project Velocity IP (VIP). Through Project VIP, we are working to expand and enhance our wireless and wireline Internet Protocol (IP) broadband networks to support growing customer demand for high-speed Internet access and new mobile, app and cloud services. Continuing to invest in our network will help those in and around Bryan/College Station better access our blazing fast network at home and when they travel. This investment is helping to ensure that our network can continually serve the many customers that rely on us for service — from local employers and first responders to Texas A&M University faculty, staff and students. We know, for instance, that Texas A&M researchers are working on a world stage — from advancing health care discoveries to driving the development of emerging technology research in offshore wind energy. We’re working to make sure they and the entire community have access to whatever mobile technologies, apps and services they need. Today, AT&T’s 4G LTE network reaches nearly 290 million people, and we expect our network build

1 8 | J u n e 2 9, 2 0 1 4

to be substantially complete by summer 2014. We also plan on deploying small cells, distributed antenna systems (DAS) and macro cells to continue improving our national wireless network. Along with the wireless service you are familiar with, investing in our national network also allows us to bring you newer technologies, products and services that can make your life easier by keeping you connected. We make it easy to tweet, text, talk or share pictures, whether customers are at home or on the run, with 34,000 Wi-Fi hotspots and another 1 million hotspots that our customers can access. And AT&T is only a call, click or drive away with three local retail stores. We offer a complete lineup of Apple, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone smartphones along with the fairest and most flexible rates plans available. Additionally, AT&T offers peace of mind with its GPS devices, including two that can help parents keep an “electronic eye” on their younger children. For anyone with a car, Audiovox Car Connection provides help with finding it after the Aggies game or at the mall. But it does much more and can alert parents of teen drivers if they drive over the speed limit. We also have cool, fun accessories that make great gifts. You can even make an appointment to save time. Through our Project VIP investment plan and new product offerings along with our wireless telephone service, we are excited to continue serving Bryan/College Station. We are honored to receive the Eagle Readers’ Choice Award as the “Best Cellular Provider” and look forward to serving this community now and in the future. Best Furniture Store

2014

When shopping for furniture, most people are looking for three things: quality, price and customer service. Striking the right balance of all three can separate a store from the competition, and that is exactly why Ashley Furniture HomeStore is the 2014 Readers’ Choice for “Best Furniture Store.” Shoppers at the Ashley Furniture HomeStore on Highway 6 in College Station are able to browse the best that Ashley has to offer in an atmosphere designed to highlight and accent the furniture and mattresses themselves. The signature Ashley waterfall greets customers as they walk in, and the showroom is sectioned off to create individual showpiece room setups complete with wall decor and furniture accessories. This presentation method not only shows off the furniture, but gives buyers a preview of how the pieces work together in a room setting. The thoughtfully designed showroom allows the customer to walk freely and look at room settings as they

2 0 | J u n e 2 9, 2 0 1 4

would look in their home. We also offer a newly remodeled, easy to shop mattress department filled with top brands to better serve our customers. Other stores simply can’t offer you the eye appealing displays and selection that Ashley Furniture HomeStore can. This innovative shopping experience, combined with quality customer service, is what has made Ashley Furniture HomeStore so popular with the community. Storeowner Mark Wilks said his company takes great pride in how his employees interact with shoppers. He stresses to them that great customer service is the first priority. “The communication we have with customers is what sets us apart,” Wilks said. “We do follow-up calls with customers after a sale and when we do something wrong, we make sure that we go back and make it right the second time. People like to be taken care of, so we’re always trying to do a great job of that.” He adds “We answer any question a customer has so we can do things the way

they want it done.” The Wilks family owns three Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations. They opened their first one in Lufkin in 2005. The College Station store opened in 2007, with a store in Waco opening shortly thereafter. Each store has won awards in its community for service and quality. Wilks said each award serves as proof that their customer service philosophy works. “At the end of the day, you can buy a sofa anywhere,” Wilks said. “What it comes down to is who are you comfortable buying it from? Who is going to give you the best value? Who is going to give the best service after the sale? Everyone is going to say they have the best service, but until you prove it, it doesn’t mean anything.” Wilks said he is proud that his store has earned the community’s business and trust. Winning seven consecutive Readers’ Choice Awards (AFHS has won every year since 2008) is further indication that Ashley Furniture HomeStore continues to be appreciated by the community both in sales and customer satisfaction in Bryan/College Station. “We just want to say thank you to all our customers who voted for us for their support and giving us a vote of confidence,” Wilks said. “This store is locally owned and operated. We live here and we spend our money locally, so it’s great to have the community respond back to us like this.”

Best Museum

2014

The Eagle readers have shown their appreciation for the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum and its ability to tell the story of its namesake, George H. W. Bush, by voting it as this year’s “Best Museum” in the Readers’ Choice awards. The George Bush Library and Museum, at 1000 George Bush Drive West in College Station, opened in November 1997. “President Bush chose to put his library here because he felt a deep connection with the spirit, tradition and military heritage of Texas A&M,” said Warren Finch, director of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum The George Bush Library and Museum cares for more than 44 million pages of official documents and donated collections from George H. W. Bush’s presidency and throughout his public career, as well as more than 120,000 artifacts. Many of these papers and

artifacts are on display in the museum and are accessible to researchers online and on site in the research room. The museum also uses primary source documents to enhance its many education programs. The library and museum underwent a major renovation and rededication about 10 years after opening -- adding many more interactive exhibits, videos and hands-on activities. Additionally, it features changing temporary exhibits that highlight various aspects of President Bush’s life and career. Currently, the “Offshore Drilling: The Promise of Discovery” exhibit is being featured through February. Finch said the museum is unique because of its ability to tell the story of Bush’s life. “We’re fortunate to be able to tell the story of George H. W. Bush,” Finch said. “He was a war hero, entrepreneur, congressman, ambassador, CIA

director, vice president and president. Our visitors will learn much about history, government and the value of public service.” The museum has won the award in years past, and Finch said Bush Library and Museum officials are honored to win the accolade again. “We’re very honored to again be named the Best Museum,” he said. “We greatly appreciate the continued support of our friends and neighbors in the Brazos Valley, as well as visitors who come from across the country and around the world to visit our museum and community. “

Dr. David Doss, with the Brazos Valley Women’s Center, provides personalized care to each patient, and The Eagle readers recognized him for his excellent care as a gynecologist with this year’s Readers’ Choice award for the “Best Obstetrician/ Gynecologist” category. Dr. Doss and Dr. Mark Montgomery founded the Brazos Valley Women’s Center in 1982. The center is now owned by Dr. David Doss, Dr. Betty Acker, Dr. Daniel Dawson and Dr. Cynthia Jansky. “The Brazos Valley Women’s Center is a facility specifically equipped to deal with the special needs of women,” said administrative assistant, Sheliza Rosenthal, MHA. “From birth control, preventative health exams, menstrual disorders, menopause and obstetrics

to prenatal nutrition, our professional staff of seven doctors, a dietician and a psychologist provide a range of services for women of all ages.” The Brazos Valley Women’s Center (BVWC) started with two providers in 1982 and now, 32 years later, the center has seven providers – Dr. Doss, Dr. Acker, Dr. Dawson, Dr. Jansky, Dr. Cari Cowling, Dr. David Moore and Dr. Jamie South. The center will be welcoming Dr. Janelle Perrone in September. Since 2007, Dr. Doss has been practicing only gynecology, as the center’s other six providers practice both obstetrics and gynecology. Two years ago, the practice moved into the Bryan Medical Center, at the intersection of Broadmoor and East 29th Street, and the BVWC represents the

entire third floor. It also has a satellite facility in College Station. The Brazos Valley Women’s Center is set apart from the competition, Dr. Doss said, because it is the largest independently owned single specialty women’s facility in the Bryan/College Station Area. “With seven providers, two ultra-sonographers, a dietician, a psychologist and an in office laboratory in one location, we strive to provide the most efficient healthcare visit to our patients,” he said. Dr. Doss said he is honored to win the award. “I am very flattered and honored to serve the community,” he said. “All women deserve to get the best healthcare available.” Dr. Doss believes he won the award because of personalized service. “I strive to provide the best quality care to every patient by welcoming them to BVWC and making them feel as comfortable as possible during their visit,” he said. “This is the first time I have won this award, but would be happy to make it an annual win! I am glad my patients are receiving the care they deserve.”

Best Home Assisted Care Company

2014

Home Instead Senior Care Franchise Owner David Gest isn’t satisfied with No. 1. His company has been voted “Best Home Assisted Care Company” in The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice Awards for the second time since 2011. But David Gest is determined to see his 13-yearold company, part of a 606-member network that also ranks as the nation’s leading in-home senior-care franchise system, have an even bigger impact in the Brazos Valley. It is a premium brand that provides premium service, including companionship, medication reminders, meal preparation, light housekeeping, personal care, errands and transportation. “We have highly dedicated CAREGivers who make differences in peoples’ lives. But as good as we like to think we are,” Gest said, “we could provide even more award-winning senior care if we had more CAREGivers. We’re looking for those who have the compassion to give of themselves – they could be college students, moms who are re-entering the workforce after their kids start school, and CNAs and others who love to work with seniors.

“Male CAREGivers are in demand more than ever, and men have been shattering the old stereotype that senior care is exclusively a woman’s field. In addition, retirees also make outstanding CAREGivers, and we know that because we have some extraordinary retirees who work for us and make a difference in seniors’ lives.” Two such CAREGivers are the husband-andwife team of Mable and Jerry Buss, who rise at 4 a.m. at least three times a week to make the 45mile trip from Hilltop Lakes to serve their clients and nurture special relationships that are built on trust. There’s nothing else the couple, both 71 years old, would rather do. “If we can do this, there are many others out there who can do it, too. I highly recommend working for Home Instead Senior Care. In fact, I’ve suggested it to guys who are my age because they would also have a lot to offer,” said Jerry Buss, who was a longtime manager for a major national steel producer north of Bryan-College Station. “Caregiving is a whole new chapter in my life, and I like to be an encouragement to

people just as I did in my former occupation. My wife and I are accomplishing something, making life better for someone.” While CAREGivers are the backbone of the operation, Buss emphasized that senior care is a total team effort that includes a stalwart office staff. Those folks manage intricate scheduling, including 24/7 coverage for some clients, and provide regular ongoing CAREGiver training while also conducting vigorous quality-assurance checks. “The office staff is outstanding,” Buss said. “They all work as a team with the CAREGivers. It’s not just one person. David Gest is a special kind of owner because he hires good people, equips them, encourages them and then allows them to do their jobs. He has his finger on the pulse of everything that’s going on and is always available and helpful when help is needed.” The office staff consists of Trish Petter, Director of Human Resources; Barbara Reed, Administrator; Terri Knight, Service Coordinator; Jessie Lee, Director of Client Care; Marsha Crofoot, Community Services Representative; and Daisy Gentry, Field Training Coordinator. “Just like our CAREGivers,” Gest said, “these are special people who want nothing but the best for our clients and their families. They go the extra mile to make sure our clients receive the highest quality of service. They embrace Home Instead’s training innovations, including the Home Instead Senior Care network’s nationally acclaimed Alzheimer’s Disease or Other

Dementias CARE: Changing Aging Through Research and Education® Training Program.” When Buss was asked how long he thinks he’ll be with Home Instead Senior Care, he didn’t hesitate when he said, “The Good Lord knows

where I am. He can come get me whenever He’s ready. Otherwise I’ll keep doing this because I enjoy it. I made the mistake of retiring too early from my other job, and I won’t do it with this one.”

Best Assisted Living/ Retirement Community

2014

The Eagle readers recognized Crestview Retirement Community for its state-of-the art active senior community by voting it as the winner of the “Best Assisted Living/ Retirement Community” category. Crestview Retirement Community, owned and operated by Methodist Retirement Communities (MRC), was founded in 1964 by a group of civic leaders and Methodist clergy members, with the goal of building a home to serve seniors of Bryan/College Station. Their vision was clear, and Crestview has been faithfully serving the Brazos Valley for more than 50 years, said marketing director Nicki Slanker. Today, in a new state-of-the-art community, Crestview serves an independent/ active senior population, as well as cares for those in its assisted living, skilled nursing and

memory support areas. Matthew Currie serves as executive director of MRC Crestview. “Our business is caring for others,” Slanker said. “Our active senior living community, Arbor Oaks at Crestview, is convenient, comfortable and maintenance-free. To help our residents indulge in our worryfree, amenity-filled lifestyle, we offer Life Care, the cost management plan for long-term care and estate protection. MRC Crestview also provides excellent care for seniors in need. For 50 years, Crestview has provided superior health care, and we have expanded our service to include

skilled nursing and rehabilitation, assisted living and memory support. Compassion is at the heart of everything we do.” Slanker believes Crestview’s complete continuum of care sets it apart from the competition. “Our complete continuum of care, along with our smart costmanagement plan of Life Care, provides area seniors protection and peace-of-mind like no other,” she said. Arbor Oaks at Crestview is the only life care retirement community in the Brazos Valley, and C r e s t v i e w ’s reputation and respected heritage date back to 1964, Slanker added. She credited winning the award to staff members. “Our residents and their family members drive our business, and our business is caring for others,” Slanker said. “Crestview works diligently to attract and retain kind, caring and loving people who are

passionate about serving others. A focus - not only at Crestview but in the entire Methodist Retirement Communities organization, is the ICARE Values. ICARE stands for integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence. These values support the MRC mission of ‘commitment to faith-based, quality living for senior adults.’” Crestview staff is honored by the award for their hard work. “We are humbled that the community has again recognized Crestview,” Slanker said. “Management and staff are both honored and thankful that those we serve have chosen us for this award.” When Crestview opened in 1964, it was strictly a skilled nursing health care center. Now in a newly built life care retirement community, Crestview’s full continuum of care

includes assisted living, memory support, skilled care and shortterm rehab. “With every living option a senior adult could need or want, Crestview seeks to provide excellent options to seniors in the Brazos Valley,” Slanker said. “Over the last year, the most notable changes are that we have over 250 wonderful new residents.” Although Crestview doesn’t currently have plans for additional development, Slanker said Crestview is always looking for new ways to serve more seniors and expand its mission of service, in a financially responsible way. For more information on MRC Crestview Retirement Community, visit Crestview at 2505 East Villa Maria Road, call 979-774-9938 or see www.mrccrestview.org.

Best Physician

2014

Bobby Bains, MD, of Aggieland Cancer Treatment Center, is a boardcertified Radiation Oncologist who just recently re-certified in his field as required by the American Board of Radiology at every 10-year interval. While having up-to-date knowledge on the rapidly changing cancer field is important, it’s not the only thing needed in rendering great patient care. Dr. Bains credits his selection as “Best Physician” to listening carefully to the desires and wishes of his patients. “We use a Patient-Centric Quality Care Model that focuses on the needs of each of our patients and their family throughout their course of therapy. I present to my patients all available options and engage them in their health care decisions. This makes it easier to choose the best therapy options,” Dr. Bains said. “The chairman of my residency training program at the University of Miami used to tell me,

‘The secret of patient care is to actually care for the patient. Once you do that, everything else falls into place.’” What sets us apart from other centers is our focus to patient concerns. We make a commitment to the patient and their families to help guide them throughout their entire journey to recovery. If needed, we help coordinate ancillary and home health services from within the community. Most of all we don’t stop caring when the treatment finishes. We follow our patients closely and monitor their long-term well-being. Our patients

always have direct access to our medical professionals and staff. Having a good patient-physician relationship leads to greater compliance and better overall health. Dr. Bains employs that concept to guide his patients through the difficulties of cancer. We believe patient education is a necessity, not a luxury. We want patients to be provided with their full slate of options before they select a treatment plan. We help patients and families select the appropriate therapies for their lifestyle and wishes. Even though we don’t heavily advertise, we are so thankful (and humbled) to be voted the best. This support from the community encourages us to keep up the good work. We thank our patients and supporters. We sincerely hope that our services are not needed, but if they are, come find out why we are voted the best in the Brazos Valley for all of your cancer needs.

Best Oncologist

2014

Aggieland Cancer Treatment Center, with Dr. Bobby Bains as Medical Director, is honored to be selected as the “Best Cancer Center/ Oncologist” for the Brazos Valley for the fourth time. Aggieland Cancer Treatment Center was founded in 2007. It was created to provide access to top quality cancer care close to home. The location in the heart of the Medical District on Rock Prairie

Road is extremely convenient to both the Med Center Hospital and the new Baylor Scott & White Hospital. The Cancer Center started with recruitment of Dr. Bobby Bains, a Board-Certified, Radiation Oncologist. He brought experience in the Clinical Setting, Academic Medicine and the Research Arena; he was part of the Adjunct Faculty at the UTHSC in San Antonio, and now holds an adjunct faculty appointment

with Texas A&M Health Science Center. He has previously served as the Principal Investigator for research funded by the National Cancer Institute. We treat cancer with advanced technology and a personalized approach to patients’ overall well-being. Our professional and compassionate staff members provide quality and comprehensive care to patients as they undergo cancer therapy. We “walk” with our patients from the time they are diagnosed to the end of their treatment. We treat our patients as family. During this process we make and develop close relationships with patients and their families. Referring Physicians love our internal policies such as availability of same-day patient appointments and acceptance

of multiple Insurances. Patients and Families like our convenient appointment times and our policy of no more than a 15 minute wait to be seen. As our motto states: “Cancer Care you need, Compassion you deserve!” We often get asked why we don’t heavily advertise to “recruit” patients like others do; it’s simple. We would rather invest our resources into obtaining the best technology and recruiting top personnel because

ultimately that is what provides patients the best chance at an ideal outcome. Once patients complete treatment, they highly recommend our services to their family and friends; We want to thank our patients and their families for once again voting us “Best Oncologist/Cancer Center” in the Readers’ Choice awards; For more information about the center, visit www. Best Plastic Surgeon

2014

For the eighth year in a row, Dr. Malcolm Rude is the Readers’ Choice for the area’s “Best Plastic Surgeon.” Malcolm Rude, Aggie class of ’93, opened his private practice in 2004 after serving his residence under the former president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Rude specializes in breast surgeries, including augmentations, lifts and reductions, but his extensive training also allows him to diagnose and treat a variety of disorders in all areas of plastic surgery. Other common procedures Rude performs include tummy tucks, liposuction, facial rejuvenation, lasers, Botox and Radiesse. In opening his own practice, Dr. Rude was able to fulfill his dream of giving women in the Bryan/ College Station access to the best procedures modern plastic surgery

2 8 | J u n e 2 9, 2 0 1 4

had to offer. “I wanted to provide stateof-the-art plastic surgery to the Brazos Valley,” Dr. Rude said. “It is very important to have a boardcertified plastic surgeon doing your surgery. Plastic surgery is wonderful, and the results are very gratifying. But safety should always be at the forefront. I feel that plastic surgery procedures should be performed in hospitals or accredited surgical facilities by doctors that have hospital privileges to do those procedures. To offer my patients the most convenient and comfortable surgery procedures, I have built my own private state-of-the-art operating room onsite in my new office facilities.” Dr. Rude’s practice is dedicated to offering personalized care while striving to make the experience of

each patient unique. Personalized care includes making a specific plan to address a patient’s cosmetic and/or reconstructive goals. His recommendations and advice are the result of professional judgment and experience. Part of what makes Dr. Rude so popular with his patients is his understanding that beauty is intensely personal. He stays current with recent advancements and technologies, allowing him to stay on the cutting edge of cosmetic surgery. He also meets extensively with patients prior to any surgery, treatment or therapy. Dr. Rude uses these meetings to educate patients and discuss all available options to ensure the patient is making an informed decision. Dr. Rude and his staff are very grateful to have won their fifth straight Readers’ Choice award. “Thank you, Brazos Valley, for the greatest compliment of choosing us as the best plastic surgeon. We are committed to ensuring that each patient will receive quality care, as well as have total confidence in our superior service, which caters to each patient’s individualized needs.”

Best Hamburgers

KOPPE BRIDGE BAR & GRILL

Koppe Bridge Bar & Grill was again voted for the “Best Hamburgers” for the 15th consecutive year, recognizing the business for over 22 yrs of feeding the best juicy burgers to hungy Aggies, visitors, and of course loyal locals. Koppe Bridge Bar & Grill has two College Station locations -- 11777 Wellborn Road and 3940 Harvey Road. Delph Ross, who owns Koppe Bridge along with his wife, Glenda Ross, said both eateries have been “serving Bryan-College Station the Best Big Burger in Town for over 20 years now.” Koppe Bridge started as a local spot out in the county on Wellborn Road with the vision of serving a few burgers and some “really cold beer,” according to the restaurant. After 10 years, the second location on Harvey Road was added. The restaurant has also expanded to include a menu

with enough variety to satisfy any hungry appetite. Glenda said she believes Koppe Bridge won the “Best Hamburgers” award because of fresh, quality food. “Our goal is to serve the freshest product possible and to provide our customers with a dining experience that is unique to Aggieland,” she said. “Our meat is ground to our specifications by a local meat company. It is delivered as fresh as you can get it, along with our produce and other quality food items.” Other than their award winning burgers, menu items that have become favorites with many of their customers include the handbattered chicken fried steak plate, as well as their fresh pit smoked barbeque. Koppe Bridge adds new items to the menu from time to time, which recently includes the popular Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich and Baja

Fish tacos that can either be ordered fried or grilled. It has recently added several new appetizers, and has also introduced smaller portion sizes on a few of its menu items to offer more options for those wanting a little less than its typical generous portions. Koppe Bridge’s goal for excellence and its staff are part of what makes it successful, Glenda said. “We always strive for the best quality product possible at a fair price, and anything short of that is not acceptable,” she said. “We have an excellent staff of employees that we entrust to uphold the integrity of our business on a daily basis. It is our belief that living in our great community has great rewards, and our mission also includes giving back to our community. We pride ourselves on using local vendors and service providers in the daily course of our business. Above all, enduring commitment, the highest ethical standards, and never taking your blessings for granted are the basic keys to our success.” Winning the “Best Burger” Readers’ Choice award made Glenda feel thankful to Koppe Bridge’s loyal customers, she said. Freebirds World Burrito is a traditional stop for many in Aggieland looking for a tasty burrito made with fresh ingredients, and the eatery was voted as the winner of the “Best Burrito” category in this year’s Readers’ Choice awards. “Our deep-rooted tradition with the A&M community and the city of College Station is what makes this award so special to us,” said Katie Reed, director of Freebirds’ local restaurant marketing. “We made our name here. Our roots are deep, but our foundation is simple. Best Stockbroker

2014

“Best Stockbroker” and runner up for “Best Financial Planner,” Wade B. Myatt (Texas A&M Class of 1989) with Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in College Station, focuses on relationships with each client, and he believes that helped him win the 2014 Readers’ Choice “Best Stockbroker” and runner up for “Best Financial Planner” awards. “I give each and every one the attention they deserve, from the smallest to the largest,” said Myatt, Vice President and Senior Financial Advisor. “I work incredibly hard to gain and keep their trust over time. There are many choices and many great firms and products out there that clients can pick from, so I strive to be there for them at all times.” Myatt also said Merrill Lynch is a premier wealth management firm, which is why he joined the firm

in November 2012. Myatt started in the brokerage business in early 1997. “They offer the best strategies, technology and scope for me and my clients,” Myatt said. “The research is outstanding, so when I make a recommendation, I feel I have the best minds in the financial world backing me up.” Myatt helps individuals and their families pursue their financial goals by creating and implementing wealth management strategies for things such as retirement, education, insurance, estate planning and gifting. He also helps companies and employees manage and navigate the many complex retirement plans that are available, and find the best one for their needs. He then helps clients maintain a disciplined investment process so they can achieve their

retirement goals. Myatt said his business has grown steadily over the years, and he has been through some of the toughest market cycles in history, which helps him keep a “calming influence” with clients during uncertain times. “My portfolios have a conservative tilt that try and smooth out the crazy swings along the way,” he said. “We all want to make the big returns, but, frankly, it’s a lot about keeping what you’ve worked so hard to build over time. My job many times is to try and keep clients from getting too emotional in tough times and stick to their plan and stay disciplined. That is how you achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.” This is the fifth time Myatt has won the Readers’ Choice awards, which makes him extremely proud. “I’m very appreciative and humbled that my clients think enough of me to take their time and send in a vote,” he said. Myatt also gave credit to his Registered Client Associate, Charlee Miller, and her assistant, Mary Lancaster, for taking care of daily administrative duties and making things run smoothly.

Best Boutique

2014

Witt’s End was born out of a passion for making all aspects of the fashion world fun and accessible. With a lot of hard work and endless great memories, Witt’s End has evolved over the past 22 years into an exciting and friendly fashion destination for women of all ages. Like stepping into a closet full of your favorite items, Witt’s End offers an endless selection of current styles for every figure and every budget. And because we’re a boutique, we offer limited quantities of our items, so you can rest assured you won’t be bumping into someone with your same look! These may be a few of the reasons Witt’s End was voted the “Best Boutique” for Bryan-College Station in The Eagle Readers’ Choice awards. Karen Witt-Kasper, owner of Witt’s End, said she is honored and excited to receive this award again, and wants to thank her wonderful clients for

their vote of confidence. We’re a place where women retreat; a place where lasting friendships are made. Witt’s End is where small-town customer service meets high-city fashion. It’s more than a pretty pair of earrings, your favorite sweater or the perfect pair of jeans. Witt’s End is an experience full of friendship, laughter and beautiful clothing, wrapped up in the perfect size and color to fit you. Witt’s End offers fashion from fresh and unique designers at prices that get you looking good and feeling great today. As fashion trends come and go with the seasons, Witt’s End offers an honest approach to wearable style. Our sales staff isn’t looking for the next big sale; rather, we aim to send our customers home with items that will endure the changing trends. With a goal to leave buyer’s remorse a relic of the past, our honest consulting ensures satisfaction and confidence

in each and every purchase. Since opening in College Station in 1991, this close-knit community has made it easy for us to come to know and understand our shopper, and it has truly been delightful. With honest feedback and true customer service, we aim to make the customer feel like they are shopping with a friend, not a pushy salesperson. We’re a place where you can kick off your heels, relax and feel fabulous; we’re a place every woman needs. Witt’s End has now expanded with another form of customer service. We now offer a program called WE Box, which provides clothing and consulting wrapped up in a box that is delivered to your front door. You simply keep what you like and ship back the rest -- all with FREE freight both ways and no hidden charges or fees. Times are changing; women are busy and Witt’s End is meeting those changes with service, a smile and style. Whether you work outside the home, are a mom with a hectic schedule or don’t enjoy shopping -Witt’s End and the WE Box program have you in mind. This is one more reason to embrace all that Karen and her amazing staff have to offer. Witt’s End and you … beautiful!

Best Dance Center

2014

Suzanne’s School of Dance in College Station has grown significantly since it first opened in 1992, and The Eagle readers have shown their appreciation of the studio’s dedication to teaching dance by voting it as this year’s “Best Dance Center.” Suzanne’s School of Dance, owned by Bethany Sleebos, had 32 little dancers when it was first established by former owner, Suzanne Moreau. It now has about 400 students, according to studio manager Joanie Whittemore. Suzanne’s School of Dance offers students a variety of classes in an uplifting environment: ballet, pointe, contemporary, hip hop, modern, lyrical, jazz, tap and preschool dance classes. Also, inside of Suzanne’s is a dance store called A Dancerís Trunk that is stocked full of children’s and adult’s dance

wear and shoes. Sleebos danced with Suzanne’s beginning in 1996. Moreau knew that one day Sleebos would take over her studio and further the legacy she had created. This past fall, she felt it was time, and passed the studio on to Sleebos, who looks forward to many wonderful years ahead. Suzanne’s is unique because of its Christian atmosphere and dedication to excellence, Whittemore said. “Suzanne’s School of Dance is a thriving Christian dance studio in the heart of Bryan-College Station,” she said. “At Suzanne’s, there is a class for everyone! Our studio staff desires to instill the values of excellence in dance and heart with their students.” She said Suzanne’s staff members are thankful to win the award, and

BEST DANCE CENTER in the Brazos Valley

would like to thank everyone who voted for the business. Suzanne’s is constantly growing, Whittemore said, and staff members have already met many new dancers this summer, including some who have recently moved to the area. The business will have several camps, classes and intensives this summer – with something for everyone. New classes starting this fall are: Saturday classes, A drill team prep class, Boys’ Hip Hop and a couples’ class. Dancers can register online at www. SuzannesDanceStudio.com.

Best Physical Therapist

2014

Leon Bradway at the Sports, Back & Pain Management Clinic was voted the 2014 “Best Physical Therapist” for the fifth time. Upon receiving the news, Leon said, “This is such an honor to be voted a fifth time. My staff and I care so much for our patients and their well-being, this is a great confirmation of our efforts.” He went on to say, “I couldn’t do what I do without my dedicated and caring staff. Each and every member of the team goes above and beyond to ensure our patient is 100 percent better when they leave us.” When asked why he thinks he won the award, Leon said, “I believe I won the award because my patients trust me and my staff. They want natural solutions to their problems, and they know we can make a significant difference in their lives.” Sport, Back & Pain Management Clinic, 2011 A Villa Maria Road, specializes in eliminating pain and

preventing and treating injuries, specifically: pain, dizziness, injuries, headaches/TMJ, pelvic pain, incontinence and movement problems. We also help athletes, young and old prevent injuries and increase sports performance. “Contrary to what many believe, physical therapy isn’t massage, hot packs, ultrasound and exercise. We use passive modalities and exercise, but to a much lesser extent in my clinic. We have the advanced manual skills to do so much more to help them achieve their goals naturally”, Leon said. In fact, Leon introduced Trigger Point Dry Needling to the Brazos Valley. He has been using this technique for over 12 years and has worked with experts both domestically and internationally. While this procedure is well known in Europe and Canada, it is relatively new in the U.S. The treatment is extremely effective in treating pain

and promotes faster healing. Leon said, “I’m always looking for the most effective, natural and safe treatments for my patients”. Leon also performs Nerve Conduction Studies and Electromyography tests, is a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and has over 27 years of experience treating a wide variety of patients. With his experience, training and education, he is able to accurately diagnose the problem and use the most effective treatment methods. The clinic’s website features many testimonials from previous patients, many you may know (BVphysicaltherapy.com). You can also join the Facebook page or sign up for an email monthly newsletter, which contains many useful articles, healthy recipes, information about changes in insurance rules and regulations and upcoming events. He said, “Everyone who comes to the clinic knows that each and every member of the staff wants to see them succeed. We view ourselves as their lifelong partners and stress the importance of taking responsibility for their own health and overall wellness. We encourage questions and want to hear from our patients.”

Best Office Supply Store

2014

Wilton’s Office Works staff members work to ensure that customers receive the best experience possible. Perhaps that’s why readers voted it as this year’s “Best Office Supply Store” in the annual Readers’ Choice awards. Wilton’s Office Works Ltd. was established in October of 1995. Stan Wilton and Locke Pachall began the business as sole partners, working out of Stan’s home. Within a month, they moved into a 4,200-squarefoot building on Villa Maria Road in Bryan, and continued there until May of 1998. They then relocated to 2501 Cavitt Street in Bryan to an old Sear’s and Roebucks building with 12,500 square feet. Their business started out selling used furniture, and graduated to new furniture and complete office systems, and in 1999 they added office supplies. In 2000, Stan and Locke’s

previous employer and competitor offered them the chance to buy out his business. In September 2000, they obtained the business, and acquired eight more full-time employees with the purchase. They also bought the franchise, Office Furniture USA in the buy out, and relocated to 181 N. Earl Rudder Freeway, now with a great staff of more than 18. The business now has a combined space of 25,000 square feet of new and used office furniture. Wilton’s has acquired numerous furniture contracts with Texas A&M University and other universities in Texas. It also has contracts with other local agencies, such as Brazos County, local school districts and government agencies, and services over 200 commercial accounts in the area. In 2000, Marlo Wilton, Stan’s wife

joined the company as a partner, and now serves as secretary /treasurer. Scott Bishop is vice president of operations, and Bob Bruner is sales manager. Wilton’s obtained HUB status in September of 2002, and it is also a participating dealer for GSA and TXMAS contracts, which also includes JWOD. Wilton’s is committed to providing excellence service and products to clients. Its mission is to build winning relationships with dedicated staff to ensure customers always receive the best possible experience. Wilton’s is also environmentally friendly, and is committed to recycling programs. Wilton’s recycles all cardboard and paper waste. It also encourages customers to return their empty cartridges, and in turn Wilton’s donates them to a local charitable institution to recycle and receive the proceeds. Wilton’s also recycles all its old catalogs from customers, and has an in-house recycle bin for aluminum cans that are also donated to local charities.

Best Stockbroker

2014

A Texas A&M graduate, Class of 1980, Mark Bayliss has been the trusted advisor for many families and businesses throughout the Brazos Valley and Texas. Every day Bayliss, CFM (Certified Financial Manager), CRPC® (Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor), Senior Vice President -Wealth Management and Senior Financial Advisor, and his team at Merrill Lynch focus on what his clients care about most and put together a plan for that outcome. “Helping one family at a time work towards achieving their financial goals is my No. 1 priority each day,” Bayliss said. He is honored, humbled and grateful to his clients and others for voting him the “Best Stockbroker” in The Eagle Readers’ Choice Award. Bayliss began working for Merrill Lynch in 1988 after five years in banking with First City Bank of Bryan. As a bank Loan Officer, he most enjoyed being involved in people’s financial lives, helping with their banking and lending needs. In 1988 John Anderson,

the local Merrill Lynch Manager, approached Bayliss about taking on a broader and more personal role in the financial services industry and told him how gratifying it is to be a family’s or businesses’ “Go-to Primary Advisor.” This fit Bayliss’ personality and skills perfectly, and he has been pouring his heart and soul into the role now for 26 years. What has helped Bayliss’ practice grow successfully over the years is his dynamic and individualized approach to each client’s needs. He combines knowledge and experience with a deep understanding, not just of a client’s goals and objectives, but of their lives, family, interests and passions. It’s an approach based on “know-how” and “know-you,” to help clients live the lives they want and plan for the future. Two years ago James, Bayliss’ son, joined his practice as a Financial Advisor after graduating from Texas A&M University with his bachelor’s of science in Agriculture Economics, with a minor in Business. For many years, Bayliss could tell James had a

real interest in what he did professionally. He would often ask probing questions and keep track of what was going on economically in the world. James has been a great addition to Bayliss’ team, bringing a new energy and competence to help serve their clients better. Success and great customer service is not possible without a top-notch client associate. Kathy Vondergoltz, Bayliss’ assistant for seven years, is invaluable in providing the “Ritz Carlton” service clients deserve and receive. Vondergoltz is Series 7 registered, CSNA (Certified Special Needs Advisor through the Merrill Lynch University) and was recognized by Merrill Lynch Greater Houston Complex as the Top Client Associate in 2010. “I am truly blessed to have Kathy as the backbone of my practice,” said Bayliss. He also gave credit to Merrill Lynch for providing his team with industry-leading money management techniques, research and financial planning tools to help clients with their many financial needs, including retirement planning, funding college expenses, estate planning and gifting. Once a plan is put in place, Bayliss conducts regular reviews to help clients monitor their progress toward reaching their goals. Bayliss’ client relationships are based on three principles: integrity, dependability and trust. He has endured market fluctuations and volatility alongside clients, and he leverages this experience to be their trusted guide.

Best New Car Dealer, Best Auto Repair Shop, Best Oil Change, Best Auto Part Store, Best Tire Shop Best Used Car Dealer, Best Auto Salesperson,

2014

Atkinson Toyota was voted the 2014 “Best Auto Repair Shop,” “Best Oil Change,” “Best Auto Part Store,” “Best New and Used Car Dealer,” “Best Tire Shop” and “Best Auto Salesperson” for Lindsey Jenkins. Paul Atkinson, general manager for Atkinson Toyota, attributed winning such accolades year after year to three things: people, processes and product. “It’s not about me,” Atkinson said. “We have the best people. They really care about what they do.” Atkinson Toyota associates compose the dealership’s processes based on how customers would like them improved, and Toyota is a great product because of quality, dependability and reliability, he said. “It speaks volumes about our people and our processes,” he said about the dealership winning seven categories in the 2014 Readers’ Choice awards. “It’s always humbling when the folks in your community vote you the best.” The dealership has also won the “President’s Award”- awarded by Toyota to the top 1 percent of Toyota dealerships in the United States - 15 consecutive years. It has also won Readers’ Choice and the Best of the Brazos Valley awards numerous times. “We must be doing something right,” Atkinson said. Consumer confidence in the Toyota brand and in the automobile industry has picked up; 2014 will be a good year for the vehicle industry overall, and 2015 will be even better, Atkinson said.

4 0 | J u n e 2 9, 2 0 1 4

That’s because of a “huge, pentup demand for a wide variety of reasons,” he said. People have put off buying vehicles because of a weak economy and a lack of confidence in the political arena and economy, and also because all manufacturers are building better vehicles that last longer, Atkinson said. The average car on American roads is 11.4 years old, he said. The increasing consumer confidence has been evident locally at Atkinson Toyota. “Our last few months have been phenomenal,” he said, adding that Atkinson has been growing its stocking level of vehicles, as well as its staff. The Toyota brand is the leading manufacturer for miles per gallon, is safer than ever, and also has the hybrid Prius, he said. Atkinson said he had the opportunity to visit Japan, and learned why it’s an ideal place for manufacturing the “very best product.” The Japanese use a term, “kaizan” that means continuous improvement. “Toyota is about improving every single day,” he said. “That’s what sets them apart.” Atkinson Toyota has also held the “Repo Joe” sales for the last 13 years. The monthly used car event has become a big event with car shoppers and helps create new Atkinson customers each time. Atkinson said he has learned what it takes to have a successful business over the years. “Hire the best people you can, be very clear on their goals and

objectives, give them the tools they need to reach those goals and objectives and get out of their way,” he said, noting that the latter was the hardest part for him to learn. “Let them do their job.” Perhaps hiring the best people is why Jenkins was recognized as “Best Auto Salesperson.” “I’ve been with Atkinson Toyota for over four years and honestly wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Jenkins said. “I’ve learned a lot from the people I work with and sincerely enjoy this community, the customers and the product we offer here at Atkinson Toyota.” Whether it’s from a new car sale, a Repo Joe event or an experience with their top-notch service department, Atkinson Toyota continues to win over people in the Brazos Valley. Atkinson and his team are right there with smiles on their faces ready to help you however they can. “We’ve served thousands of customers,” Atkinson said. “We’re honored by the trust and loyalty they have in us and we’re going to do everything in our power to continue to earn that trust.” For more information about Atkinson Toyota, including current inventory, visit atkinsontoyota. com.

Best Hotel

2014

The Eagle readers have acknowledged Hilton College Station & Conference Center’s luxurious accommodations and quality service by voting it as this year’s “Best Hotel” winner in the Readers’ Choice awards. Hilton College Station & Conference Center, owned by Encore Hospitality, opened in 1985. With a vision for the future growth of the Bryan/College Station area, the Hilton College Station & Conference Center was built to offer a full-service hotel in our college community, said James Franks, general manager. It offers a pivotal point for any trip to central Texas. “The Hilton College Station & Conference Center has 303 luxuriously appointed guest rooms, with over 65 suites, several in-room Jacuzzi suites and a two-bedroom Presidential Suite on the top floor,

overlooking the beautiful Brazos Valley,” Franks said. “With over 25,000 square feet of hotel meeting, wedding reception and ballroom space, the Hilton College Station can easily play host to not only large conventions and meetings, but events of any size.” Besides guest rooms and a conference center, the Hilton College Station & Conference Center recently expanded its offerings outside the hotel walls to provide catering services to various venues around town. “The hotel now has a dedicated catering team to provide the same quality service that our guests have come to expect at a venue of their choosing,” Franks added. The company is excited to grow the catering service to new clients and venues, and as the hotel continues to grow, there could be

potential in the future for additional new services, he said. Franks said it is an honor to be voted as the “Best Hotel” in the area. He believes the Hilton College Station & Conference Center won because of quality employees and services. “The quality of our associates and the many services that the Hilton College Station & Conference Center can provide set the hotel apart from the rest of the market. While we have been in the market for 20 plus years, the hotel continues to strive to provide greater service and unique experiences,” he said.

Shana Elliott said she not only helps clients with their financial investment strategies each day, but she also gets to know clients on a personal level. Attention to each client sets the company apart from competition, Shana said. “Financial advice and investment management isn’t the only way we add value to our clients’ lives,” she said. “We get to know them on a personal level. We want to know all about their families, life experiences, and the stories that make them who they are. If we are not a valuable part of their lives, then there is room for improvement.” Shana began working with Edward Jones in 2003 after graduating from Texas A&M University with a chemical engineering degree. She was drawn to the financial services profession because she loves interacting with people, and wanted to get to know clients personally. She and her husband, who both grew up in Bryan-

College Station, wanted to stay in the area to raise their family. Working with Edward Jones was an easy choice because the company gave her the option to establish her business anywhere she wanted. Shana works with branch office administrators, Debbie Goodman and Amy Bond. All three have worked with Edward Jones for more than 10 years, and they love working together to serve clients. “We work with all different kinds of investors, but in particular we love working with retirees and women,” she said. “We strive to help our clients with not only day-to-day investment management strategies, but also understanding their own emotional tolerance for risk and market volatility and setting financial goals. We want our clients to come away from our office educated and focused on their financial future, so that market volatility isn’t quite so scary.” In March, Shana relocated her branch

Best Children’s Birthday Place

2014

Grand Station Entertainment – which provides fun activities for the whole family – was voted by The Eagle readers as the “Best Children’s Birthday Place” winner . Grand Station Entertainment, 2400 Earl Rudder Freeway in College Station, is owned by Mike and Deanna Logan. “The Logans wanted to expand their business of family entertainment, and noticed there was a real need in this area,” said Adam Carr, general manager. “So why not build a place that can enjoyed by all -- such as families, students and businesses. Their goal was to bring something into the community, which was affordable, entertaining, clean and appealing to all ages.” Grand Station’s most popular sport that it offers is bowling.

“It’s the sport for all ages, sizes and genders,” Carr said. “It is the fastest-growing sport nowadays.” The business also features laser tag, glow-in-the-dark mini golf, a variety of video games, a sports bar and a snack bar. Grand Station is also a great place to host a birthday party. It has party rooms available, and offers several birthday packages for kids of all ages. It also has a conference/meeting/ banquet room available for rental. They also offer a different special every day of the week. Carr said he believes Grand Station’s “clean, friendly atmosphere” and affordable prices are what sets it apart from competition. He said staff members are pleased to receive the awards. “We are proud and excited,” Mike Logan said. “We have

received other awards, and each one means a great deal to us. We want to dedicate and recognize our wonderful staff for the outstanding jobs they do.” Since opening, Grand Station has made many improvements. It started out with one laser tag game, but staff realized it wasn’t as challenging as they’d like. So they installed one of the largest Laser Tron systems in Texas. They also changed the menu, to offer more tasty food choices. Karaoke was also incorporated, and entertains customers on Wednesday nights at the sports bar. Extended hours three nights a week (open until 2 a.m.) were also added, along with special pricing. Grand Station has also changed out the original wooden lanes with modern synthetic glow lanes, and is now in the process of replacing the pin spotter machines with the newest state-of-the art equipment. “At Grand Station you never know what to expect” Carr said. “We are continuously seeking ways to improve our service and experiences at the ‘One Stop Fun Spot!’”

Bowling is the most popular sport offered at Grand Station Entertainment.

Best Bank

2014

Prosperity Bank was founded in the rural Southeast Texas town of Edna in the mid-1980s. Now the second largest Texas-based bank, it has grown to 238 branches throughout Texas, including 15 in Oklahoma. It was also named by Forbes Magazine as America’s Best Bank in both 2012 and 2014. Prosperity Bank entered the Bryan/ College Station market in early 2007, and has experienced consistent growth through the years. In late 2013, Prosperity Bank merged with First Victoria National Bank, creating a larger, well-seasoned team of bankers and adding six additional branches to the Bryan/College Station region, with 16 banking centers now serving the Brazos Valley area. With 10 locations serving Bryan and College Station, Prosperity also has branches in the surrounding communities of Caldwell, Huntsville, Hearne, Madisonville, Navasota and New Waverly, with combined regional assets totaling over $1.0 billion. The local team of

over 180 bankers is led by Mark Humphrey, area chairman, alongside Neal Briers and Tim Jones, area presidents. Prosperity Bank prides itself as the “big bank with the community bank inside” and emphasizes customer service and relationship banking. It’s the kind of place where loyal customers can transact their banking business with a personal touch and friendly smile. Customers can bank with confidence, knowing their money is safe with a financially solid institution that will be around in the years to come. Its associates are active in their respective communities, and Prosperity believes giving back to the Brazos Valley is a top priority. The staff can be seen volunteering and serving locally in a wide array of programs and are encouraged to do so. Prosperity supports many local nonprofit organizations financially through donations, as well. Prosperity is a full-service bank that offers a complete line of services including:

First Prosperity Bank, the 2014 Readers’ Choice Best Bank winner, merged late last year with First Victoria National Bank, and now has 16 locations in the Brazos Valley. As a first-year winner of the Eagle’s Readers’ Choice award, the associates of

Prosperity Bank could not be happier or more proud of this endorsement given to them by the community in which they live and serve. “It’s an honor and a true compliment

to our staff of local bankers to receive an award such as this. We look forward to growing, serving and prospering with the Brazos Valley,” said Mark Humphrey, area chairman of Prosperity Bank.

Best Mexican Restaurant, Best Fajitas

2014

A local institution since opening in 1978, Casa Rodriguez is the 2014 Readers’ Choice pick for “Best Mexican Restaurant” and “Best Fajitas.” Founded by Richard and Beatrice Rodriguez with the blessings and recipes of Paul and Chelo Rodriguez, “Casa Rod” as loyal customers know it, has been winning over lovers of great Mexican food for more than 30 years. Whether they come for a steaming plate of enchiladas, a delicious breakfast taco or a bowl of Casa Rodriguez’s famous chili, customers can count on the great service this family-owned restaurant prides itself on. “We stress to our employees that our customers’ experience should always and will be one that they won’t ever forget,” said Debbie Montalbano, daughter of Richard and Beatrice Rodriguez. “We make our customers feel as if they’re family.” While Casa Rodriguez, 300 North Bryan Ave. in Bryan, opened in 1978, the true history of the restaurant stretches

much further back. The Rodriguez familycooking legacy dates back to 1898, when a young man from Zacatecas, Mexico, named Manuel Rodriguez came to Bryan to work the railroads. Manuel took the money he earned on the railroads and opened a Mexican restaurant behind the Ben Knox Saloon, near the railroad depot in Downtown Bryan. He served homemade Mexican stew and other dishes that became very popular with both locals and travelers. Among those dishes was the chili recipe that is still served today at Casa Rodriguez. Many of those recipes were passed down to Paul and Chelo Rodriguez, who passed them down to Richard and Beatrice, who in turn passed them down to Debbie. It is those cherished family recipes that set Casa Rodriguez apart from other restaurants in the area and have sent many a customer running to Downtown Bryan to get their “Casa Rod fix.” Montalbano says some of their most

popular dishes are El Mobley, fried taquitos, fried avocado and, of course, the El Memo Enchiladas. Plus, delicious breakfast items served every day, such as pancakes, Spanish omelets and arroz con leche (rice pudding). “Weekends we have homemade Caldo (soup) until it’s all gone,” he added. In 2012, the restaurant renovated and put in a full bar, so it could serve mimosas, sangria, CasaRitas, Memo Punch and Big Red Margaritas. Casa Rodriguez has worked hard for its recognition. The staff and management strive daily to provide the best service to their loyal customers. “We’re excited to see four generations of families still dining with us today! It is a humbling feeling that makes our family proud to know that our hard work and team effort finally paid off,” Debbie said. “To all our loyal returning and future customers, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” To see Casa Rodriguez’s menu and specials, visit www.casarod.com. Stop by on the first and second Fridays every month to enjoy live entertainment with your meal.

Best Dentist

2014

A few weeks ago a call came into Dr. Reece’s office from a man who had broken a tooth. This was not a routine call. It was the weekend, and the tooth involved was one of John’s (the patient’s) upper front teeth. John is in his 60s, active and works full-time as a regional sales representative for a large national company. A broken front tooth was simply not an option when meeting with his clients, and he needed to get his tooth fixed fast and correctly. Dr. Reece’s office returned John’s call immediately and arranged for John to be seen first thing Monday morning. It appeared to be a fairly simple problem, with a straightforward solution. Except it wasn’t. It turns out a broken front tooth was the least of John’s dental health problems because John had neglected his teeth over the years - largely due to a fear of going to the dentist. John’s

situation was not unique; dental anxiety is very common, as are the negative results from poor oral health. How did John break through his fear? What did Dr. Reece do to address a lifetime of John’s dental neglect? How did John return to work immediately without missing a beat? And, what made John’s friends say, “You look 10 years younger”? The answer was a combination of sedation dentistry, New You DenturesTM and the talent of one of the most amazing dental teams ever assembled. The first thing Dr. Reece’s team did was assure John that he would not be judged on the state of his dental health and secondly, that advances in sedation dentistry would provide him with anxiety and pain-free procedures. Together, after learning from Dr. Reece what choices were available, John decided on removing his few

T H E B R YA N - C O L L E G E S TAT I O N E A G L E

remaining decayed teeth and opting for one of Dr. Reece’s latest inventions, New You DenturesTM. In short order, a temporary set of dentures was created for John that allowed him to return to work with a great new smile and a renewed sense of confidence. The responses John began receiving were immediate and positive, “You look good”, “Did you cut your hair?” and “You look younger.” John liked the results so much that he soon chose to also have dental implants. This method of retention for John’s New You DenturesTM allowed him to experience the additional benefits of greater biting and chewing power, the ability to taste foods and not worry about slippage. How does Dr. Reece accomplish so much with his New You DenturesTM? His combination of rigorous training, experience and a talented artistic eye all return patients’ facial symmetry and balance to a more youthful appearance. Dr. Reece practices an advanced form of dentistry called Neuromuscular Dentistry that focuses on oral health and the science of our how our jaw, bite, teeth and gums all work together for better overall health. This approach allows patients to get relief from headaches, sleep problems and a host of other oral health related problems.

Today, John has great new teeth that are virtually indistinguishable from real teeth, a more striking profile due to proper fit and design and has conquered his fear of dentistry. Indeed, it is a new chapter for him

and his overall health. You can watch John’s complete video story by going to DrReece.com and clicking on New You DenturesTM.

Best Wings, Best Sports Bar, Best Onion Rings

2014

Wings ‘N More has become a tradition in Bryan-College Station, and readers have voted it as this year’s winner of the “Best Wings,” “Best Onion Rings” and “Best Sports Bar” awards. Wings ‘N More is set apart from the competition partly because of the freshness of the ingredients it uses, said Richard Gonzalez, director of marketing. “We take pride in creating a product that is fresh and gives our fans value for their dollar,” Gonzalez said. “We choose to work with the top service providers to ensure the quality of our food. Our team works very hard on maintaining consistency, so the guests receive the same food quality and service every visit. We also take pride in not

using frozen products. We enjoy taking raw products to create something we think our fans would enjoy.” Gonzalez said Wings ‘N More won Readers’ Choice awards because of its customers. “We won these categories because we have the best fans,” he said. “They demand fresh, high quality and consistent products, and this allows us to get better. We are excited to win the ‘Best Sports Bar’ because there are several bars that offer great competition. We think that our service and quality mixes for our drinks, along with great sound and HD TVs offer an experience that allows our fans to create great memories when they are watching their team compete. We also think that we have great

specials to offer our fans, as well.” Recent changes to Wings ‘N More include founder Mark Dennard’s release of plans to franchise his concept of Wings ‘N More Express. His announcement comes as the company has signed a significant Area Development Agreement with the Leeco Properties, Inc. Franchise Group to open more than 20 new restaurants in Midland-Odessa, El Paso, Lubbock, Amarillo, Waco, Temple, Corpus Christi and San Antonio, as well as cities in Oklahoma and New Mexico, Gonzalez noted. Leeco Properties, Inc., owned by Larry G. Lee of Odessa, operates 16 McAlister’s Deli restaurants and various other concepts. Kathie Grozdanich will be president of the new company operating the Wings ‘N More Express Southwest Wing Group. The group opened the first location in Midland, and Wings ‘N More is working on creating new fans, as well as bringing current fans what they remembered when they were in Aggieland, Gonzalez said. Other recent changes include adding Whiskey Wednesday to

the featured lineup - from 4 p.m. to close on Wednesdays, the bar offers Crown Royal, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam and Fireball for $4. Wings ‘N More has also added its own Summer Beer every day for $2.99, and now has Willy’s Spiked

Tea with Deep Eddy Sweet Tea on tap. Wings ‘N More is also working on some new menu items that it hopes to offer to customers soon.

Hospice Brazos Valley’s dedication to serving those with life-limiting illness is evident. This year was the sixth time the organization has been recognized for a Readers’ Choice Award. Now in its 25th year, the non-profit organization has established a rich history of service with a commitment to caring for individuals touched by life-limiting illness, grief and loss. “Our organization was born in 1989 out of a concern that there were no hospice services in Bryan-College Station,” said Craig Borchardt, Hospice Brazos Valley President and CEO. He goes on to say, “In our first year of service we cared for 34 patients. Last year we had the privilege of serving 1,066. The patients and families who receive our care value the best care possible, provided by a caring team of health care professionals who are dedicated to unwavering compassion and clinical excellence.”

Why we’re different

Caring for those with life-limiting illness is about more than treating disease. It’s also about helping patients live life as comfortably and independently as possible by paying attention to such things as spiritual needs and relationships with others. Care is delivered by an experienced palliative care team, guided by calming, compassionate values. Many of the team members are certified in hospice and palliative care. In fact, Hospice Brazos Valley has more staff members certified in hospice and palliative care than any other organization in the Brazos Valley, and exceeds the national average in such specialization. “Hospice care helps patients achieve a more meaningful and productive life with many living longer than expected,” said Borchardt. Quality care and a track record of

serving the community for over two decades sets the organization apart from its competition. As the only nonprofit hospice in its 17-county service area, Hospice Brazos Valley is owned by the communities it serves, which compels staff members to put patients and their families first in everything they do. In 2012, Hospice Brazos Valley opened the first hospice in-patient facility serving the Brazos Valley. The seven-bed facility is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care for hospice patients needing acute care and places the organization at the forefront of providing specialized services, tailored to the needs of patients and families. This year, Hospice Brazos Valley initiated a new outpatient palliative care program for patients with chronic, non-terminal illness. The program seeks to help patients and their families understand the valuable role palliative care plays in improving quality of life and guiding decisions about treatment options. It also seeks to educate clinicians about the full scope of palliative care services and work with healthcare professionals and service providers to deliver care to patients in non-hospital settings. Borchardt said he believes

Hospice Brazos Valley won the “Best Hospice” award because it provides the best hospice care in the area. The organization’s long tenure has allowed it to build strong relationships with health care partners, and reflects the community’s trust. Borchardt felt honored by the award.

“It’s a special honor to receive this award. It not only affirms the care we provide, it also honors our health care partners who assist us,” he said. “We are grateful to the community and accept this award on behalf of our patients and families, staff and volunteers, and everyone who supports our mission.”

The three chief executive officers during Hospice Brazos Valley’s 25 years of service are, from left to right: Craig Borchardt (2006 - present), Anne Hazen (1989 - 1990) and John Foster (1990 - 2006).

Best Tractor/ Farm Equipment Store

2014

Agriculture is king in this part of Texas, and Coufal-Prater is the 2014 Readers’ Choice for “Best Tractor/Farm Equipment Store.” Coufal-Prater Equipment, LTD opened its first store in Temple in 1974 as Coufal Equipment Company. As a John Deere dealer, Coufal Equipment grew as John Deere grew through the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. In 1985 a store was opened in Cameron. The Prater Equipment Company opened its Bryan location in 1992 and expanded into Navasota in 2001. In November of 2004, the Coufal and Prater companies merged to form Coufal-Prater Equipment, which has been providing topnotch service ever since. Further expansion was made in March 2010 with the addition of the Taylor location.

The employees and management at Coufal-Prater strive to be the source for all their customers’ needs, from offering the very best products to making sure the staff is able to support those products with unmatched customer service and know-how. It is also their goal to build customer trust and loyalty both in the store and around town through sponsoring local events and encouraging employees to be active members of the community. “We are very proactive in supporting local community events and in supporting our customers,” said Phil Hitchcock, general manager for Coufal-Prater. “We support our governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, 4-H organizations and FFA for our youth. We strongly support our smaller communities and their fundraising

opportunities for community centers, volunteer firemen and booster organizations.” Customer support is the hallmark of Coufal-Prater’s business. Its stores offer extended business hours, as well as weekend on-call staff for parts and service work. Coufal-Prater also shows support for the agricultural community through in-house financing options and other services such as the John Deere credit card and the Farm Plan – a program that allows flexible financing for farmers. A commitment to customers and dependable service has won Coufal-Prater plenty of loyal customers who do not hesitate to recommend the store to their friends. Having the customers show their appreciation through the Readers’ Choice Awards is something the entire Coufal-Prater staff takes pride in. “We are honored to win the Readers’ Choice Award,” Hitchcock said. “We want to thank all of our customers for their business and support. We will continue to work on improving our business to ensure that we are always delivering the best value.”

John Deere dealer, Coufal-Prater is located at 3110 State Highway 21 in Bryan.

Best Cardiologist

2014

A heart attack is a frightening moment not only for the person having it, but for that person’s family as well. A good cardiologist is able to both treat the patient and help put the family at ease at the same time. With his attention to both the technical and interpersonal aspects of his practice, Dr. Kennon Wigley of the Central Texas Heart Center was named the 2014 Readers’ Choice for “Best Cardiologist.” Dr. Wigley came to the Bryan/College Station area in 1989, and joined Dr. Gordon Mitchell’s practice. He has been with the Central Texas Heart Center for 25 years, where he is a part of talented team of doctors. Being surrounded by quality doctors is something Wigley values dearly in his work. “I consider myself fortunate to be associated with great partners in practice and many fine physicians in the community, both primary care and specialists,” he said.

5 6 | J u n e 2 9, 2 0 1 4

“This year, my partners and I are particularly pleased to be participating in an exciting new development in cardiology coming to the Brazos Valley in just a couple of months.” Wigley added. In August, The Heart & Vascular Center will open at The Physicians Centre to offer safe, convenient, sameday cardiac and arterial catheterization using state-of-the-art equipment for carefully selected patients needing these elective procedures. Wigley notes, “In much the same way that people have safely gotten their colonoscopies in outpatient endoscopy centers for years, the technology is now so advanced that, in large cities, an outpatient setting is often preferable to a hospital for scheduled catheterization procedures. We’re thrilled that this technology will now be coming to our region.” According to Dr. Wigley, national

data shows that, for many stable patients without other medical problems, the outpatient setting is safer with a lower risk of infection, much less expensive for both patients and society, and results in a better overall experience for the patients than a hospital. “I eagerly look forward to meeting the needs of my patients in this new facility,” he said. Dr. Wigley embodies a team-first mentality and is quick to point out that while his is the name on the award, being named the 2014 Readers’ Choice for best cardiologist was a group effort. “The delivery of good medical care truly requires a team,” Wigley said. “I am thankful to have been selected for this honor, but I really believe this award is a testament to the entire staff who support our practice.” Dr. Wigley looks to his faith and family for the inspiration to help him continue to provide the best care possible to his patients and their families. “The opportunity to serve others in the medical profession is a God-given gift and a sacred trust,” Wigley said. “I believe all healing comes from the Lord. If we keep these principles in mind, the rest of the practice takes care of itself. And I realize none of this would be possible without the wisdom, strength and loving support of my family.

Best Bicycle Store

2014

Aggieland Cycling handles all of customers’ bicycling needs, and it has been voted as “Best Bicycle Store” in this year’s Readers’ Choice awards. Aggieland Cycling opened in 1999 after being purchased by the current owner, Rod Wagner. Wagner had been the manager for Aggieland Schwinn for years before purchasing it from the late owner’s wife. He then renamed the business. There are now two locations in College Station: the original location at 817 Texas Ave. and a new location at 1705 Valley View Drive. “Rod has been immersed in cycling from a very young age,” said Robert Lee, manager of the original location. “He had always aspired to own a shop, and that was realized when he

purchased Aggieland Schwinn.” Aggieland Cycling is a fullservice bicycle shop that offers a full range of products, from fun beach cruisers and quick commuter bikes, to pro-level racing bikes -- and any option in between, Lee said. It also offers a wide selection of components, clothing and accessories for any style of riding. The business is also full-service bicycle repair shop with some of the most skilled mechanics in the area on staff. Aggieland Cycling has grown every year since it opened, Lee said. This year, the business expanded, and opened its second location in south College Station – now its main location. “This new location is our flagship location, and will be a

full-service repair shop and our main showroom for the bikes and accessories we sell,” he said. “It has provided us with a lot more space to work with, and it has a much more open feel than our original location in front of campus. The old shop will see some improvements too; it will open up some and be more service oriented, as we will strive to return students’ bikes to them even more quickly than we do now. “ Aggieland Cycling now carries two of the most wellknown and respected brands in the industry: Specialized and Giant, as well as BMC (which was added about five months ago), a smaller, boutique brand that has some amazing products, he said. It also carries Redline, Fit and Subrosa BMX bikes. The

shop carries components and accessories from many of the top brands in the industry. Adding a second location will allow Aggieland Cycling to do a lot of things it didn’t have space for before, like fitting and showcasing its products, Lee said. A fitting service is in the works over the next year, as well as a reworked website. “We plan on at least allowing group rides to meet at and leave from our new location, if not actually start a shop ride,” he

noted about future plans. “We have some community outreach ideas, but they are a little further out.” Aggieland Cycling has won the award for at least seven years. Lee believes it is a repeat winner because of the friendly staff, expert advice offered and wide selection of products. “It’s really exciting to know that people continue to choose us as the best bike shop in the Brazos Valley,” he said.

Best Housekeeping

2014

Giving clients one less thing to worry about has been Merry Maids’ philosophy since the company was founded in 1979. David and Josie King brought that attitude to Bryan/College Station in 1999. Fifteen years later, they are still helping customers and are the 2014 Readers’ Choice winner for “Best Housekeeping.” Merry Maids, the nation’s largest professional residential cleaning service, has been servicing the cleaning needs of the Brazos Valley since 1999, when Josie and David King opened the local business. “ W e

considered several different industries, but settled on the residential cleaning industry and particularly Merry Maids after visiting their Memphis headquarters and visiting several offices throughout Texas,” David said. “We had a little bit of a shaky start, but we won the company’s Rookie of the Year out of 35 new franchises nationwide.” Merry Maids will send a team of two trained cleaning professionals into your home to address your cleaning needs that were previously identified from a free in-home consultation by their cleaning consultant. While some companies will quote a price over the phone, Merry Maids feel it’s important to view the home and consult with the owner about their specific cleaning needs. It is also important that they understand the cleaning process. Rather than quote an hourly rate,

where you may or may not be able to complete the cleaning, Merry Maids believe it is more advantageous to the customer to quote a fixed price for the job. That way, regardless of the amount of time, Merry Maids will complete the cleaning. Merry Maids will provide one-time cleaning specials or place the customer on a regular-scheduled cleaning on a weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly or monthly service. Most Merry Maid customers are on a regular-scheduled service where they receive the same team for each cleaning. No contracts are required. “We have a great team of employees that have been with us for several years, and I believe our employee retention is one of the keys to our ability to provide the quality of service our customers expect,” David said. “It is our employees that have won this award, and we give them all the recognition for making this possible. They are the ones that cement the relationship with our customers. I believe the quality of our service today is greater than several years ago because of our experienced staff.” David said that winning an award voted on by customers helps validate the work Merry Maids staff members do. They appreciate and thank their

loyal customers and the readers for taking the time to recognize Merry Maids in this manner, and Merry Maids will strive to live up to this award. “It’s great to get positive feedback from customers in the service business because it says you are heading in the right direction,” David said. “However, positive feedback can turn negative just as quick if you don’t focus on pleasing every customer. The most difficult part of this business is when you lose a

customer because you didn’t deliver on your promise. Every customer has to realize value from the cleaning.” Merry Maids has made great strides since opening here 15 years ago, and the Kings plan to continue that trend in the future. They thank The Eagle’s readers for awarding them with a Readers’ Choice this year and look forward to earning more votes in the future.

Best Patio/ Outdoor Dining

2014

Customers of Ozona Grill & Bar in College Station associate the restaurant with the relaxed patio atmosphere. So do The Eagle’s readers, as the local hot spot won the Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Outdoor/Patio Dining.” Named after a famous West Texas town, the menu at Ozona Grill & Bar was inspired by traditional Texas and border cuisine. The College Station Ozona is the second location for the popular restaurant. The original Ozona opened in 1992 near SMU in Dallas. The Dallas Ozona’s trademark was its patio dining areas, often regarded as the biggest and shadiest in the city. In 2003, Ozona expanded to College Station, bringing that same outdoor experience to Aggieland. Ozona has a patio that is a home away from home, and it’s ready

for the summer. The restaurant’s general manager, Brian Morris encourages customers to swing on by for great weekly lunch and drink specials and to check out the new menu, featuring all the Ozona favorites and a few new items as well, such as Salmon Tacos. “Ozona provides a unique dining atmosphere to the B/CS area,” said Morris said. “We believe we have the largest, shadiest and most natural patio environment in town. We try to combine that with a casual and fun atmosphere that can be enjoyed while watching sports, listening to live music or simply relaxing over brunch, lunch or dinner.” With the relaxed patio atmosphere and variety of happy hour specials like “Working Women’s Wednesday,” it’s not hard to see why Ozona Grill & Bar

is a popular place to find people unwinding at the end of a tough day. “Year after year we continue to offer a comfortable atmosphere along with a diverse menu of homemade food, and a large selection of drinks; Ozona fulfills everyone’s burning desire for a good ol’ time,” Morris said. He added that Ozona staff members enjoy seeing guests smiling and enjoying themselves while dining there, and seeing them leave happy so they will be ready for a return visit. Ozona is pleased to add “Best Outdoor/Patio Dining” to its list of accomplishments the past four years, and Morris thanked those who voted for the bar and grill. “We are honored to be recognized by our guests in this way,” Morris said of Ozona’s Readers’ Choice win. “We are proud of the service we provide, and are so appreciative of our customers. Thanks to everyone that thought of us!” So stop by Ozona Grill & Bar at 520 Harvey Road and kick back with your friends and a big plate of nachos and enjoy the best happy hour on the best patio in town.

Best Dental Hygienist

2014

The Eagle readers showed appreciation for Hope Otero’s dedication to her work by voting her as this year’s “Best Dental Hygienist” winner in the annual Readers’ Choice awards. Otero has worked as part of the team of Dr. Black Dental Care in College Station for more than two years. She attributed winning the “Best Dental Hygienist” award to her hard work and faithful clients. “I was completely surprised when I was awarded with the Readers’ Choice Award,” Otero said. “This is my first year winning this award. It is exciting to know that my hard work over these past two years has been noticed and appreciated by all my faithful clients.” Otero was born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho, where she lived until she graduated from high school in 2007. Otero said she then

attended school at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon, where she received an associate’s degree in science. She then moved back to Idaho to attend the dental hygiene program at Idaho State University, and in May of 2011, she received her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Soon after, Otero moved to College Station, and was taken on as part of Dr. Brian Black’s dental team. “I have been working for Dr. Black Dental Care for the last two and a half years, and could not be happier,” Otero said. “He is a great boss, who honestly cares for all his patients and staff. I love going to work every day, and hope to be a part of Dr. Black Dental Care for many years to come.” Otero said she felt honored to receive the accolade. “I am so blessed and honored

by winning this award,” she said. “I have amazing clients, who are so supportive. It is also exciting to win something, especially when did not expect it at all.” Dr. Black Dental Care is located at 219 Rock Prairie Road in College Station, and provides services that include cleanings and other preventative procedures, cosmetic dentistry, restorations and care for periodontal disease. Credited with inventing the boneless breast of chicken sandwich and being the first to introduce the concept of chicken nuggets, Chick-fil-A® has continually sought to serve nutritious and freshly prepared food in its various locations throughout the country. Closer to home, Chick-fil-A® is available at Briarcrest Drive and Freedom Boulevard in Bryan, at Texas Avenue and Harvey Road in College Station, at Highway 6 off William D. Fitch Parkway in South College Station, and at three Texas A&M campus locations. This year, in keeping up with

customer demand, Chick-fil-A® continues to refine the menu to offer freshly updated options to serve a wide variety of tastes. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich is now marinated with a special blend of seasonings and grilled for a tender, juicy backyardgrilled taste, and is served on a toasted multigrain bun with lettuce and tomato. The Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich adds Colby Jack cheese and applewood smoked bacon to the mix. The grilled nuggets are now also marinated with a special blend of seasonings to achieve the same rich backyard-grilled taste as the Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Other update to the menu are the addition of blueberries in the Fruit Cups, catering fruit trays and the Grilled Market Salad. Look for your nearest Chickfil-A® today, and taste why they were once again voted “Best Fast Food Restaurant” in the Brazos Valley! Best Dentist

2014

Dr. William Privett and his staff strive to take care of all their patients’ needs. This is why they believe Dr. Privett has won the “Best Dentist” category in this year’s Readers’ Choice awards. Heart of Texas General Dentistry opened on Rock Prairie Road in October 2003 – moving from a smaller location on Texas Avenue in Bryan. While the southern part of College Station continued to grow, there was an increased demand for family dentistry. Dr. Privett recognized the potential in the current location as he passed it every day on his way home from the Texas Avenue office. Heart of Texas General Dentistry offers the latest in dental care for all ages. Dr. Privett and his staff routinely participate in continuing education courses, which allows for them to keep up with new products,

technology and techniques used to provide the best dentistry available. Treatments provided in Privett’s office include preventative, restorative and cosmetic procedures. Staff members believe a friendly and competent team sets Privett’s team apart. “Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is thrilled to assist our patients with anything they might need,” said staff members in a written statement. “We like to remind our patients that we are here to work with them, not on them. The front office staff greets our patients with a smile, and is happy to work with the patients’ schedules to set up for further appointments. The hygienists are very personable and thorough during the patient’s visit. Our registered dental assistants are very knowledgeable and happy to explain or answer questions about any procedures. The clinical staff is

known for creating a comfortable and stress-less atmosphere for patients who may suffer from a little dental anxiety. Dr. Privett ties this, what we feel is a family, all together with his cheerful banter, outstanding bedside manner and exquisite abilities in dentistry.” They believe the award was the result of aiming to help patients the best they can. “We believe our office has won this award because we do our very best to accommodate patients and strive for excellence in order to arrive at the best end result and most pleasurable patient experience,” they wrote. “Whether it is meeting a patient with a toothache on weekends, scheduling early morning appointments or staying later in the evening to make sure a patient is well taken care of.” The dental team was excited about the award. “Dr. Privett and the entire staff feel grateful, thrilled, appreciated and very blessed to be recognized as a favorite among the many excellent dentists in the Bryan/College Station area,” they stated. “We are especially honored because we had no idea we were in the running, and not a single vote was solicited. We just do our very best every day.”

Best Day Care Center

2014

St. Joseph Eagle’s Nest is more than simply a day care; the Eagle’s Nest is an extended nursery and toddler and Pre-K program that is provided in a loving and faith-based environment. Recognizing the need for excellent, affordable childcare and preschool education for the families of St. Joseph parish, Monsignor John McCaffrey, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, established the Eagle’s Nest in 2001. It quickly grew from six to 60 children, and this year’s enrollment has soared to 140. We have grown from two rooms in the Parish Activity Center to two campuses, one at 109 North Preston, and one at 600 South Coulter. Our facility is one of only a few in the Brazos Valley to offer a pretoddler class for a child’s transition from infant to toddler. As part of the St. Joseph Catholic School System, which was established in 1894, the

Eagle’s Nest shares in the school’s rich history of educating and nurturing children — mind, body, and spirit. In keeping with this holistic approach to childcare and education, the Eagle’s Nest offers music and movement, outdoor play, sensory activities, arts and crafts, early literacy, motor skills, quiet story time, dramatic play, and lots of laughter, love and positive guidance. Spanish and sign language are taught to children of all ages, and a math and science enrichment program is offered at the pre-school level. Constructed in the late 1940s and used through 2002 as classroom space for the St. Joseph Catholic School System, the Preston Street Eagle’s Nest campus has experienced various renovations and updates over the years. The most recent facelift occurred this past fall when St. Joseph middle and high school students,

including student ambassadors and members of the varsity football team, rolled up their sleeves and got to work painting classrooms, hallways, and benches, cleaning up the grounds, and scrubbing windows, walls, and closets. Outdated toys and furnishings were tossed and the flower beds along the front entrance were tilled in preparation for new landscaping. In May 2014, just 12 years after his vision of a Daycare Center was realized, Monsignor McCaffrey personally distributed diplomas to 37 Eagle’s Nest Pre-School graduates. Their graduation ceremony, complete with caps and gowns, was a demonstration of their hard work over the past year — learning to read, write, sing, and recite the “Pledge of Allegiance.” St. Joseph’s Eagle’s Nest accepts children from all faith backgrounds who are between the ages 8 weeks and 4 years old. For more information, or to register for the 2014-15 school year, call one of our campuses today. To reach the Preston Street campus, call 979-779-0861. For the Coulter Campus, call 979822-6236. Best Orthodontist

2014

Winning The Eagle’s Reader’s Choice Award for the seventh time has been a wonderful experience for Dr. Troy Elms and his team. “What makes us most excited is the challenge of constantly advancing the orthodontic experience and exceeding patient expectations. Receiving The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice award is a confirmation that we are getting it right with the people we care about most – our patients,” said Dr. Elms. A positive patient experience is a key phrase in Dr. Elms’ practice. Regular team meetings center on shaping the patient experience to ensure higher and higher levels of satisfaction, efficiency and enjoyment. The Elms team does this by focusing on the most minute of details. “Can paperwork be reduced?” “Is the temperature right?” “Are options clearly explained?” “Are we listening to what patients have to say?” ‘What additional training can we

take to advance our skills?” “What can we do to better engage and educate patients during their appointments?” The list is endless, as is Dr. Elms’ quest to keep refining his craft. Look in on Dr. Elms’ practice, and you see he has two distinct groups of patients that they serve exceedingly well: the young students who are getting braces for the first time and adults who may have had braces as a child and need adjustments to their bite, or adults who have never had braces. The two groups are accommodated in different ways to ensure the orthodontic treatment matches their lifestyle and needs. For adults, the treatment choices are becoming increasingly diverse and effective. Ranging from iBraces, that are invisibly installed on the back of teeth; Clarity ceramic braces that are translucent and nearly invisible; and Invisalign, which are not braces at all, but a clear aligning system that has

become very popular within recent years. These and other techniques all offer effective alternatives to conventional braces for adults. And Dr. Elms makes sure they always produce a beautiful, aligned smile. When it comes to youth orthodontics, Dr. Elms is in a league of his own. Students love the Elms experience, beginning with the Orthomobile - which is the free, chauffeured Hummer shuttle, to and from school. Fun is also a big component for the student patients. Including the most anticipated Elms summer event – the annual Adamson Lagoon swim party, where food, fun and antics take center stage as hundreds of patients from the Brazos Valley have the party of the summer, all courtesy of Elms Orthodontics. And, to peek in, it would appear that Dr. Elms and team are having as much fun as the guests. Dr. Elms has not only managed to create a truly special environment, but has done so without compromising orthodontic quality. This combination is what endears patients to Dr. Elms, his loyal staff and to the great results they produce. Located conveniently on the Northeast corner of the intersection of the Highway 6 Bypass and F.M. 2818/

Emerald Parkway, Dr. Elms’ building has become the benchmark for what a modern orthodontic practice can be. Unmistakably inviting, a huge portecochere welcomes cars and knocks the Texas heat off arriving patients. And the interior harbors a thousand little touches to make it special - like an inhouse movie theater and iPads at each

treatment station, allowing patients to surf the Internet. If you are considering braces for your child or yourself, give Dr. Elms a visit. It will be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made and one of the best experiences. You’re going to love Elms Orthodontics!

In every town there are business names that stand for the community they serve. They come by their well-deserved reputations through honesty, hard work, and quality service. Britt Rice Electric is one. Every morning you can see the signature beige-colored Britt Rice trucks fanning out over the Brazos Valley as they head to a wide variety of jobs, both residential and commercial. Perhaps Britt Rice is best known for the large keystone building projects that bear their familiar name on construction site signage, such as Kyle Field, Bush Library and Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park (to name a few). But that is just part of the story. Over the years Britt Rice has continued to grow in a myriad of ways, including an expansive service division (both residential and commercial), telephone, data, fiber,

fire alarm, security systems and access control installation divisions. Having grown to over 245 electricians that include an impressive 15 Master Electricians, 110 Journeymen Electricians and 85 Apprentices / Helpers, Britt Rice is one of our community’s largest employers. As such, they have always felt a corporate responsibility to give back in dozens of different ways across dozens of different charities, along with the countless volunteer hours the employees put into the organizations of their choice. Established in 1974, the company recognized early that demand for electrical services in our fast growing economy would soon outpace the number of trained, qualified electricians available. Britt Rice rose to the occasion and established an on-site, federallyapproved apprenticeship program.

Now over 20 years old, the program has ensured a steady stream of new electricians of the highest quality and professionalism. Two of Britt Rice’s newest divisions are Carroll Systems and Crown Systems. With over 38 professionals (including RCCD and BICSI certified personnel) on staff, Carroll Systems has become the preeminent go-to specialist for complete phone, data, and fiber optic systems. Crown Systems is the systems division of Britt Rice Electric. This swiftly growing section of Britt Rice is a certified Siemens fire alarm distributor and installer and has quickly come to be the most trusted installer of this crucial safety element. Britt Rice Electric is proud to win the Eagle Readers’ Choice Award for 2014. For them, it is acknowledgement of their hard work, professionalism, commitment to putting their customers and clients first, and pride in a job well done. Britt Rice would like to say thank you for the 40 years of trust you have given us in handling all of your Residential and Commercial electrical and low voltage needs.

Best Wine Selection, Best Liquor Store

2014

When the folks in College Station want to celebrate an event, have a backyard barbecue, watch the big game or plan a dinner party with the neighbors, they turn to Spec’s Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods, the 2014 Readers’ Choice for “Best Wine Selection” and “Best Liquor Store.” Since 1962, family-owned Spec’s has been providing exceptional service and an impressive selection of unique finds for hungry and thirsty Texans. With locations across the Lone Star State, this once-small company now has tens of thousands of products in Texas Superstores , including thousands of wines, spirits, mixers, hundreds of craft beers, walk-in humidors, bar accessories, gourmet foods and much, much more! On April 1, 1962, Carroll Jack-

son — affectionately nicknamed “Spec” because of his signature eyeglasses — opened the first Spec’s with his wife, Carolynn, in Houston. One day, Spec sketched a caricature of a bunny with glasses, symbolizing his quick, friendly service. People loved it, and it has been the Spec’s logo ever since. In less than 10 years, the demand for more Spec’s locations grew. The Jacksons’ daughter Lindy and husband John Rydman came on board in 1971, and just three years later, they introduced the largest selection of wines Houston had seen. Now with Texas’ largest selection of wines, spirits and beers from more than 100 locations across the state, Spec’s has truly become a destination shopping experience and a Texas institution.

“Spec’s couldn’t be happier about the continued expansion of our business across Texas,” says Lisa Rydman, third generation spokesperson. “We hope hungry and thirsty Texans are as happy to receive us as we are to provide expert service and everyday low prices on Texas’ largest selection of wines, beer and much more.” Although Spec and Carolynn have since passed away, the values and standards they started are still at the core of this Texas familyowned business. Their mission since 1962 has been to make and keep customers happy. So whether you’re a first-time customer or a long-time fan, make sure you stop at Spec’s for an impressive selection of unique products at incredibly low prices! Spec’s selection includes over 100 stores in Texas! Best Mortgage Company

2014

Purchasing a home is one of the most important financial decisions many Americans make. But, while the desire for homeownership is strong, the process can seem overly complex, causing many potential home buyers to hesitate moving forward in the process. Wells Fargo invests in homebuyer education by offering information, tools and resources to help aspiring homeowners prepare to achieve home loan approval and sustainable homeownership. “We are committed to helping our customers turn houses into homes,” said Michael Cosser, Branch Sales Manager. “We want to do what we can to help

our customers prepare to move forward successfully in the home buying process, which includes helping them understand what’s expected for loan approval and what’s needed for sustainable homeownership.” There is no magic bullet to getting loan approval, but there are a few things that can be done to get on the right path. Here are some helpful tips: Know your credit profile – Know your credit score before applying for a loan. A borrower’s credit history can impact the amount required for a down payment, the interest rate or the amount of money they can borrow in relation to their income. Once per year, you

may obtain a free copy of your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus by visiting w w w. a n n u a l c r e d i t r e p o r t . com. If you’re interested in understanding and working to improve your credit score, visit the Wells Fargo Smarter CreditTM center found at www. wellsfargo.com/smarter_credit. Have manageable debt – An important factor that lenders evaluate is debt-to-income ratio, which is the relationship between income and expenses. The smaller your debt-to-income ratio is, the more attractive you are as a borrower. While debtto-income requirements vary by mortgage programs, a good rule of thumb is to keep your total debt level at or below 36% of your gross monthly income. Show funds for a down payment – In the current mortgage environment, a down payment is required for most loan programs. A 20% down payment is not mandatory. There are loan programs that provide lower down payment

options. However, some low down payment programs may require private mortgage insurance, which will add to your monthly payment and overall loan cost. Demonstrate proof of all income – Can you repay the loan? That’s what lenders want to know when they consider your application. You must be able to provide documentation of your source of income. Lenders will require current W2s, tax returns or other documentation in order to review your income history. If you have any additional income and you want it considered as the source of your loan repayment, you should bring proof of that

to share with the lender. Have some money in the bank – In addition to showing an ability to make your monthly mortgage payments and other financial responsibilities, lenders want to see that you have savings or a cushion. A good rule of thumb is to have savings for at least six months of expenses. This illustrates to the lender that you are financially responsible and capable of putting money aside. Best Anesthesiologist

2014

You have a choice. Many patients are completely unaware that they have a choice in selecting their anesthesiologist. This primarily comes from a misunderstanding that the anesthesiologist is “assigned” to your case or is included “automatically” with the surgery team. While this may be the perception, it is not a fact. The trend across the U.S. is for more and more patients to put as much thought and effort into choosing their anesthesiologist as they put into picking the surgeon performing their procedure. There is good precedence for this effort considering the anesthesiologist’s important role in producing good surgical outcomes. Today, it is not uncommon once a patient has found an anesthesiologist that they are comfortable with, to stick with

them throughout the many different types of surgeries they may have over the course of several years. The reason for this shift is simple; the patient’s anesthesiologist of choice is the one consistent physician from one procedure to the next. Since each surgery or procedure usually requires a different primary surgeon caring for the patient for the first time, patients find it greatly reassuring that their anesthesiologist knows their particular physiology, has a history with them, and will care for them in the operating room. J.B. Dott, with BCS Physicians Anesthesia Services, has been a leader in providing this type of individualized approach to anesthesia care since 1983 in Bryan/ College Station. For the past 31 years, many patients have come to consider him a permanent member

of their healthcare team, along with their primary care physician. Besides an easygoing manner, Dr. Dott is known for taking the time to do pre-surgery consultations and post-surgery follow-ups with all of his patients and provides only physician-administered anesthesia. It is this depth of caring and confidence of knowing that Dr. Dott is there for them that has made many fans of Dr. Dott’s style of personalized medicine. And in a reversal of traditional roles of years past, patients are just as likely to call Dr. Dott about his recommendations for surgeons for needed procedures as they are to ask their primary care physician. For elective procedures, informed patients have even been known to book Dr. Dott far in advance to guarantee his availability before scheduling their surgery. Competent, personalized, one-to-one, accessible health care has become Dr. Dott’s hallmark. Healthy, grateful patients have been his reward. Best Home Builder

2014

Whether building your dream home or undertaking a once-ina-lifetime renovation, finding a contractor who you can trust is a dream come true. When the B-CS community was asked, readers of The Eagle once again selected Richmon Homes as the “Best Home Builder” for the third year in a row. Being selected is a great honor, and owners Richard and Monica Palasota know they earned this designation as a direct result of their hard work and dedication to their clients. “We have always believed in giving the best possible service at the best possible price to our customer,” Richard said. “That’s the way our family has been doing business in the B-CS area for over a century.” Richard and Monica understand

that personal dedication to their clients has made Richmon Homes stand above the crowd of residential contractors, and they are thrilled with the feedback they have received from the community. “We take pride in the work we do and it shows in the feedback we get from our clients,” said Monica. “It’s always nice to be recognized for our dedication to our homeowners.” Richard is a fourth-generation Bryan-College Station native and along with his wife, Monica, they have raised their children and grandchildren in the Brazos Valley. Having lived here their entire life, they have developed a thorough understanding of the local building community. “We have built a strong network of satisfied customers and business partners over the years, and I am blessed to have been doing it for so

long,” he said. Both Richard and Monica credit a large portion of their success to a long-term commitment to personal development and continued education in residential construction. Richard has earned designations from the National Association of Home Builders as a Certified Graduate Builder, Certified Aging in Place Specialist and Certified Green Professional. These combined qualifications are only shared by 10 percent of residential contractors nationwide, giving Richmon Homes a unique ability to better service their clients. Richard combines his years of experience in residential construction, and his continued education, to design perfectly tailored homes, but together, Richard and Monica are a building team that can’t be beat. From renovations to building your dream home, call Richard and Monica at Richmon Homes and see just why they’ve earned the Readers’ Choice awards for “Best Home Builder” and “Best Home Renovation Company.”

Best Meat Market

2014

Readfield Meats & Deli was voted “Best Meat Market” in the Brazos Valley, and for more than 50 years it has been regarded as the best butcher shop in the hearts and minds of many loyal customers. Readfield Meats & Deli is a family owned and operated business that was begun in 1960 by the parents of the current owners, Richard, Larry and Roland Ruffino. The business has grown from a small meat market on North Bryan Avenue in Downtown Bryan to its current location on Texas Avenue, with the big, red cow in front. Through the years, the store has grown and developed into a multi-service food center that provides a unique shopping experience for its customers. Readfield’s meat market carries a full line of fresh meat products, including aged, USDA Choice and Prime Chairman Reserve Premium

Beef, Mid-West Pork and Texas Poultry. Other meat products include lamb and veal. Readfield Meats & Deli is also known for its own award-winning smoked meat products, including sausages, turkeys, beef jerky, bacon and hams. Specialty fresh sausages: Italian, breakfast pan, bratwurst and Polish, are popular items, also. Ready to cook, seasoned items include marinated brisket for barbecue and marinated beef and chicken breasts for fajitas. Grilling favorites include Chicken Diablos (seasoned chicken breast, jalapenos, cheddar cheese and bacon) and Rattlesnake Eggs (fresh Polish sausage, cream cheese, jalapenos and bacon). The deli offers fresh deli meats and cheeses sliced to order, as well as in-store made tuna, chicken and pimento cheese salads. Custom made sandwiches, including muffulatta

and Italian style hoagies, are on the menu. Customers can order custommade deli trays, including meats and cheeses, vegetables, fruits, sandwiches, cookies and brownies. In-store baked fruit pies and artisan breads are baked daily. Rotisserie baked chickens are available, as well. The grocery department stocks an extensive selection of imported pastas, olive oils, tomato products, olives and cheeses. An interesting collection of both domestic and imported wines is also available. “It’s an honor to be reassured that we’re doing our job well,” said Mr. Ruffino. “We pride ourselves on our quality and great customer service and really want to thank the Brazos Valley for their support.” Readfield Meats & Deli is located at 2701 South Texas Avenue in Midtown Bryan. Look for the big red cow out front. The store hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Hope you visit us soon.

Best Podiatrist

2014

It’s easy to take our feet for granted, but when something is wrong, we see just how important they are. When you have foot problems, you want someone who can get you back up and moving around as safely and quickly as possible. For doing just that, The Eagle’s readers have named Dr. Brian Abbey “Best Podiatrist” in the 2014 Readers’ Choice Awards. “It’s certainly an honor for both me and Brazos Valley Foot Care,” Abbey said. “It’s nice to be held in good light with the patients. We’re very grateful for the support we get from the community.” While it is Abbey’s name on the award, he is quick to share the honor with the entire Brazos Valley Foot Care team. From the office staff to the nurses to his fellow podiatrists, Abbey credits the quality of his coworkers with his success in the Readers’ Choice Awards.

Abbey is the senior doctor at Brazos Valley Foot Care and sets the tone for the clinic’s level of service. He is joined by Eduardo Orihuela (Aggie Class of ‘95), Robert Aguilar, Julie Albert (Aggie Class of ‘99) and Tyler Kearney (Aggie Class of ‘03). Together these doctors cover a service area that includes offices in Bryan, College Station and Brenham, as well as regular visits to facilities in Bellville, Marlin, Groesbeck, Mexia, Caldwell and Navasota. Bill Glaze, Brazos Valley Foot Care practice administrator, said one of the things the doctors at Brazos Valley Foot Care have in common is their approach to treating foot problems. “Our doctors practice very conservative care with our patients,” Glaze said. “They do whatever they can do non-surgically to make the patient functional and comfortable, and

only turn to surgery once the more conservative options have been exhausted.” Beyond the medical part of the care, what endears Brazos Valley Foot Care to its patients is the way they are treated by the staff. Glaze said patients can always expect smiles from everyone in the building as they come in for their appointments. Brazos Valley Foot Care began over 30 years ago as a single doctor practice. Dr. Abbey joined the practice in 1999. It has grown along with the community and branched out to the surrounding communities. Partnerships with area nursing homes and a growing network of doctors who confidently make patient referrals has aided that growth, and the clinic has plans in the works to move into a larger facility in the very near future. In fact, Brazos Valley Foot Care will be moving into their new permanent home on September 1. The new facility is located at 3312 Longmire in College Station As they expand now, they do so knowing their patients and the public supports them along the way. Dr. Abbey and the entire staff at Brazos Valley Foot Care are excited and thankful for that support in the form of their Readers’ Choice Award this year.

Best Barber Shop

2014

Sport Clips specializes in men’s and boy’s haircuts and was designed for the male client to get a terrific haircut while feeling comfortable in a clean, exciting sports environment. We also took into consideration what they think is a reasonable price for a haircut, how long it should take, and other features and benefits that guys would appreciate. “Sport Clips is not your grandfather’s barbershop!” It’s the barbershop of the 21st Century. At Sport Clips you don’t just get a haircut; you get a haircut experience. It’s convenient, it’s sports-centered, and its affordable - the three things that most guys can enjoy and appreciate. Guys never have to worry about making an appointment; we serve our

clients on a walk-in basis and are open seven days a week with evening hours until 8 p.m. on weekdays for those wanting a haircut after work or on the weekends. In most cases with minimal wait times, our clients can complete their haircut visit within 30 to 40 minutes. Sport Clips hires only “guy smart stylists” who are very experienced in male haircutting skills. We are extremely proud of Melinda Tamez of our Tower Point store, who was selected as the “Best Stylist” runner up this year. She and our other teams of stylists offer several salon-type services, such as our signature MVP Experience with an invigorating massaging shampoo, vibrating shampoo chairs and a steam towel treatment, followed with a neck

and shoulder massage -- to go along with a precision haircut. All at affordable prices and surrounded by sports. That’s why the Sport clips concept continues to grow across Bryan/ College Station since 2005 with our two existing stores on E. University Drive and south College Station at Tower Point, along with our newest store on W. Villa Maria at the new WalMart center that is slated to be open later this summer. With comfortable ballpark stadium style seating and a sports atmosphere, guys can keep up with all the latest sports news and games by watching the big screen televisions in the waiting area and at each cutting chair. With central hair vacuum systems at each cutting chair, they will always find super clean stores as all hair is vacuumed after each haircut. We are extremely grateful to be named the Best Barber Shop and thank all of our wonderful clients for this honor who have found “At Sport Clips It’s Good To Be A Guy!”

Best Insurance Agent

2014

Allstate Insurance owner Jacqueline Voss and her team make sure their customers have the insurance products they need to protect themselves and their families. The Eagle readers have recognized her hard work by voting Voss as this year’s “Best Insurance Agent.” Voss provides customers with whatever insurance needs they have, including auto, home and life coverage. For more than 80 years, people have chosen Allstate to help protect them against the unexpected, and since opening on Jan. 1, 2002, Voss has worked with the company and upheld this standard with her clients. She purchased the agency from her father, Gary Voss. The agency grew quickly, and now employs four licensed sales producers. “We strive for exceptional service and deliver assurance that you’re prepared for any unexpected circumstances,”

Voss said. “We don’t just sell policies; we help you understand your insurance needs, explain coverage options, and help you make informed decisions on the best available coverage.” Voss was also was recently honored with her business’s designation as an Allstate Premier Agency for 2014, a prestigious service designation bestowed on less than 48 percent of Allstate’s nearly 10,000 agency owners across the country. The designation was presented to Voss for her outstanding business performance and commitment to putting customers first. She added that she was also the only agent in Bryan-College Station to qualify for the “Circle of Champions” performance award, based on growth, retention and profit. Voss said hometown service by a dedicated staff is what sets her agency apart from the competition. When choosing Voss and Allstate, customers

benefit from her experienced staff members who work to ensure customers receive the level of service they desire, she said. “As an exclusive Allstate agent in Bryan, I know many local families,” Voss said. “My knowledge and understanding of the people in this community help me provide customers with an outstanding level of service.” In order to make a customer’s experience convenient and hassle free, Allstate offers a wide variety of insurance protection and financial services all in one location. Voss has enlisted the expertise of Phillip Miller, a life financial specialist who consults with her clients, as a service to them. Miller, along with Heather Hanna, Robin Jantzen, Danielle Condon and Abby Habarata, all sales producers, know everything about the products the company offers and round out the team, Voss said. “Entrusting Allstate with your families’ future means you will be working with an experienced, knowledgeable team dedicated to protecting what you own and preparing for the future,” she said. “We help protect their assets like home and auto. We offer family protections with life, long-term care, cancer and insurance.”

To accommodate more customers, Voss added staff and moved her agency this year. The new location is

4415 South Texas Ave. in Bryan. For more information, call 979-846-5758 or email jvoss@allstate.com.
