Howdy, I hope the slight change in weather feels as good to all of our Chamber members as it does to the Chamber staff. It is a gentle reminder that the holidays are here. Be sure and check out ways you can spice up this holiday season in this month’s Chamber Connections Magazine. You’ll find places to shop for that perfect present, Christmas crafts to do at home, local holiday events, and ways to give back to this community, which is the true reason for the season. It is also the time of year to remind everyone of the Chamber’s shop local campaign. Shopping local is something we encourage the community to do all year, but in the midst of a pandemic and the holiday season it is vital to our local businesses that we support them and encourage others to do so as well.
October was the beginning of a new fiscal year for your Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce. Phil Shackelford became our immediate past board chair and Greg Zweiacker took over as our new chairman of the board. I want to thank Phil and express our appreciation for his outstanding leadership and guidance during this difficult year. Through Phil’s leadership your Chamber partnered with both cities and the county to help coordinate Operation Restart, initiated a ‘Chamber Chats’ series to utilize social media to interview elected officials and industry leaders and much more. Check out our 2020 Year in Review to see more that your Chamber has done for you over the course of 2020. I would also like to thank the Blinn College Foundation for their support and for allowing Phil to lead our Chamber this past year. As our immediate past chair, Phil will continue on the Chamber board and help the Chamber fulfill its mission of enhancing the economic well-being of the businesses in the communities we serve.
As Greg Zweiacker of Zweiacker and Associates begins his year as our Chamber board chairman we are excited about the possibilities, and also the challenges ahead in the coming year. We will be working on building back our workforce, tracking specific industry needs, and working closely with city and state officials to continue a safe Operation Restart. We always need and want input from our Chamber members about these issues, as well as any others, as we work together for the betterment of our community.
At our Chamber Annual Banquet each year we honor individuals who have made a difference in our community. This year we are proud to award the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year to Kenny Lawson of C.C. Creations. Our Volunteer of the Year is Sergeant Jason James of City of Bryan Police Department. Thanks to their efforts and generosity, we all live in a better Bryan and College Station.
As we head into the 103rd year of your Chamber of Commerce, we recognize that our businesses are stronger together than apart. Thank you for your membership, and thank you for building a stronger, healthier community through stronger, healthier businesses. Happy Holidays!

Ioriginally moved to the Bryan/College Station area to attend Texas A&M University where I received my Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. After graduation, I went on to obtain my M.B.A. from Prairie View A&M University. I first became involved in the Bryan/College Station Chamber when I was selected for the Leadership Brazos Program in 2013. Leadership Brazos is still one of my favorite programs I have joined in my professional career.
I am honored to be selected as the 2020-2021 Ambassador Chairwoman. I am grateful to be a part of an organization that promotes volunteerism, networking and a sense of community. I have been an ambassador for the past three years, and this past year I had the privilege of serving as one of the Ambassador Captains. I enjoy being a part of the ambassador program for a few reasons. First, I have the opportunity to volunteer with a great group of other community members. Secondly, I have the privilege to learn about and help promote businesses that are vital to our community. To me, being an ambassador means being part of a support system that helps you to grow as an individual both personally and professionally.
As the marketing specialist for FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, the ambassador program allows me the opportunity to share the hard work FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies is providing to our community and the world on a global level.
FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies is a world leading contract development and manufacturing organization who supports the biopharmaceutical industry in the development and production of tomorrow’s medicines.
My goal as chairwomen this year is to continue to create chamber champions through our Ambassador Program and to empower our Ambassadors to continue to work on behalf of the chamber by promoting the chamber mission, bringing in new memberships, and providing another face for our local chamber businesses.

estination Bryan officially began its work to promote Bryan as a tourism destination on Oct. 1, bringing a renewed focus on everything that Bryan has to offer. Our organization serves as the City of Bryan’s Destination Marketing Organization (DMO), with a purpose of inspiring travelers to visit the community, increasing the economic benefits from tourism and meetings, enhancing visitor experiences and attracting groups and events to Bryan. The organization will play an important part for residents and the community by encouraging an influx of “new” dollars from visitors into Bryan. This impact provided by visitors increases sales tax, provides revenue to businesses, and helps to keep taxes low for residents
through these additional tax revenues. In addition, businesses that cater to visitors, such as attractions, entertainment venues, retail, and similar, all contribute to the quality of life we, as residents, get to enjoy in our community. Tourism is part of a larger economic ecosystem and helps in many ways that isn’t always immediately recognizable.
“I think ultimately, the prospect of building a new organization dedicated to the city of Bryan and watching the positive impacts it will have on the community for years to come is exhilarating,” said Executive Director John Friebele. “As part of this overarching goal, it is broken down into developing new packages, identifying potential tourism products, creating new partnerships between stakeholders in town, and, hopefully, energizing residents on being involved in tourism, even if it’s just a greater understanding of how it impacts them indirectly.”
As we begin marketing the community, there will be some differences with the focus solely being on Bryan. There will be more opportunities to dive deeper into the stories that make Bryan unique and to focus on the variety of leisure attractions in Bryan. Bryan’s location is ideal for capturing visitors from the “Texas Triangle” who might be interested in trips to smaller towns for culinary excursions, shopping, heritage, culture and live events.
Additionally, Destination Bryan will be focusing on ensuring that people visiting Texas A&M University for meetings or sporting events also know about the experiences available in Bryan. And, with the growth at the RELLIS Campus, in the Biocorridor and at Travis Bryan Midtown Park, the community is poised to begin offering more for both group meetings and leisure travelers.
Destination Bryan will soon
launch a branding study to refine the target audiences who are most likely to visit Bryan for a day or weekend trip. Alongside the branding study, we will also begin to build our new website to launch in 2021.
While Destination Bryan will continue to work closely with traditionally visitor-oriented businesses such as hotels, attractions, restaurants, and retail, the organization is interested in expanding into partnerships with all businesses to bring new developments and long-term products and solutions to the area. We encourage Chamber of Commerce members to connect with us for new ideas and ways to further connect both locals and visitors to your businesses.
long-established notion among College Station’s leadership is that compelling economic development fuels tourism, and compelling tourism fuels economic development. That enduring principle led to three new brands that reflect the city’s tourism and economic development initiatives: Visit College Station, Compete College Station, and Grow College Station.
While tourism has historically played a vital role in the local economy, incorporating it into the city’s long-range economic development strategy has brought tourism to the forefront. Visit College Station is thrilled about undertaking the fresh opportunities and challenges ahead. Our prime objective is to attract visitors for leisure and business, put-
ting in heads in hotel beds and energizing our economy. Who says you can’t be a tourist in your own town? Visit College Station also seeks to serve our residents by forging business partnerships that offer expanded and memorable experiences such as Christmas in College Station to enhance our community’s quality of life.
A bold, competitive spirit defines College Station. We’re rightfully proud to host Fightin’ Texas Aggie athletic events, and sports tourism plays a pivotal role in enticing visitors throughout the year. Compete College Station vigorously pursues regional, national, and international sporting events to compete at College Station’s nationally acclaimed facilities. Grow College Station is the puzzle’s finishing piece. Bringing in new restaurants, stores, and attractions is essential in shaping College Station as an alluring destination for tourists and an exceptional
place to live for residents. Cultivating a business-friendly atmosphere makes our town visitor-friendly and encourages broad economic growth. We work cross-functionally with other city departments, expanding our base of skills and resources. When our organization succeeds, our community thrives. As the home of Aggieland, College Station anchors the Brazos Valley. We remain committed to engaging with our friends at Destination Bryan and surrounding communities for the benefit of all.
The Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce always encourages its members to shop local and to spend money with companies who prioritize giving back to our Brazos Valley Community. In the midst of this pandemic, it is more important than ever to patronize our local businesses. Our community has done a fantastic job of coming together during these arduous times, and it is our duty to give back to the businesses who have suffered the most this past year. Local businesses are the cornerstone of our community, and spending money locally benefits our community in a variety of ways.
Our local businesses invigorate the local economy by recirculating and multiplying the money spent within our community. Independent local retailers and distributors tend to prioritize locally-produced and locally-sourced goods and services. Many of our local restaurants purchase their meat and produce from local farmers and ranchers. Our bars are proud to serve regional craft beers, wines, and locally distilled spirits. Boutique shops and retailers showcase local artisans and unique fares. These business owners recognize the value of working with their neighbors and cultivating professional relationships based on trust and mutual respect. They enlist the services of other locals throughout each phase of business, from architecture and construction to marketing and advertising. In the Brazos Valley, we are so fortunate to have quality local options for virtually any product or service imaginable, allowing us to spend our money at home.
Our local businesses support one another, particularly during times of hardship. Back in March when restaurants were forced to close their dining rooms due to the Coronavirus pandemic, a group of restaurateurs decided to put their own problems aside and give back to the community in the toughest of times. They created a program called “Brazos Feed it Forward” with the goal of providing meals to healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID-19. They were able to serve over 8,000 meals to CHI St. Joseph Health, Baylor Scott & White Health, the Bryan and College Station police and fire departments, the Sheriff’s Department, and more. Their mission was made possible through partnership with local nonprofits such as United
Way, the Salvation Army, SOS Ministries, Health for All, BVCASA, and the Chamber of Commerce. Another program that was started in the face of the pandemic was the COVID-19 Community Relief Fund, a joint initiative between the United Way of Brazos Valley, the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley, the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce, and the cities of Bryan and College Station. The fund was aimed to provide small business support and relief for nonprofit organizations who suffered during the pandemic. The relief fund has raised and distributed over $1.1 million for local businesses and nonprofits. The camaraderie between our local businesses and the community at large truly sets the Brazos Valley apart. One of the biggest collaborative efforts of the past year was Operation Restart, a collaboration between the cities of Bryan and College Station, the Brazos County Health Authority, and local businesses. The initiative consisted of a Task Force of local leaders who reviewed Governor Abbott’s Open Texas Initiative and worked together to provide additional best practices beneficial to building consumer and employee confidence. This is yet another example of business leaders in our community coming together to support one another, especially in the midst of a crisis such as this.
Our local businesses reflect the unique culture of our community, truly making Aggieland a “one-of-a-kind” destination. When visitors come from out of town for Aggie game days, conferences, and other events, we have the privilege of showing them what makes us special and what sets us apart from anywhere else in the world. Local polls such as “Best of the Brazos” and “The Eagle’s Choice Awards” prove that our favorite restaurants, cafés, and boutiques are exclusive to the Brazos Valley. It creates a strong sense of pride to know that we have amazing dishes and original products that can’t be found anywhere else. It is these businesses that showcase what it means to live here. This is what makes an impression on visitors and what encourages them to come back again. Artisan showcases and vendors markets such as the Brazos Valley Farmers Market and The Local at Lake Walk are opportunities for small local businesses to sell their wares and foster relationships within the community.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses account for a staggering 99.9% of all United States businesses and employ 47.5% of all United States employees. In 2015 alone, small businesses created over 1.9 million jobs, with 1.1 million coming from firms employing less than 20 employees. In fact, small local businesses are responsible for the creation of every two out of three new jobs nationally. Additionally, when small businesses utilize other small businesses, such as plumbers or electricians, it creates a ripple effect which helps sustain even more local jobs.
In addition to shopping locally, there are several other ways to support your local businesses this holiday season and throughout the year. You can like their social media pages and leave them a review. You can refer friends and family to their business. You can tag yourself on Facebook when you visit their establishments. Our local business owners each have a vested interest in this community, and they work hard to see it thrive. They give back in so many ways, through youth sponsorships, volunteer work, charitable donations, and pro bono services. Many are active members of local boards or run for public office in order to better serve our community. These local businesses define us as a community, and we must not forget that their survival depends on our patronage. Make it a priority to shop local this holiday season and throughout the year. Each time you make a purchase, be cognizant of the impact that money has on our local economy. And most importantly, remember to thank our local business owners for their continued dedication to our community.

December 3rd through Monday, December 7th. Radio M*A*S*H will be collecting toys in the Post Oak Mall parking lot, next to Chuy’s, on the corner of Harvey Road and Highway 6 in College Station. Toys donated are given to less-fortunate children during the Christmas Season. Toy requests are received from area elementary schools, churches, and service organizations that work with less-fortunate children. No requests go unfilled! You can also give monetary donations on-site. Funds raised go towards the purchase of more toys from local businesses in the Brazos Valley. Wish forms are sent to local churches, schools, and community groups. They distribute the forms to needy families and then return them to us. The orders are filled ON-SITE during Radio M*A*S*H and the local groups send people to pick up the orders when they are filled. The local groups then distribute the orders to the individual families. Luigi’s Holiday Cocktail
This refreshing, winter cocktail combines a classic Italian liqueur with festive Pomegranate flavors. These come together to create a delicious Italian Holiday cocktail that everyone will enjoy!
a1.5 oz Tito’s Vodka
a.25 oz Limoncello
a.25 oz Pama Liquor
a1/2 oz POM (Pomegranate Concentrate)
aSqueeze 1/2 a lemon
aSplash of Soda Water
Combine all ingredients in a shaker. Shake thoroughly. Strain over ice in a Tom Collins glass. Top with soda water. Garnish with pomegranate seeds and a lemon wheel.
Need that perfect holiday party snack tray? Look no further. There are no rules for making a charcuterie board. Make it your own, change it up, think outside the box! This is what makes charcuteries so interesting, fun and delicious. Compromised of a flavorful combination of chees-
es, cured meats, fruits, nuts, and more, there are limitless combinations for your guests to snack on.
Choose your board.
Get pretty jars and bowls. Find tiny utensils such as butter knives, spoons and forks.
Choose your cheeses. Some good options are Aged Cheddar, Smoked Gouda, Mozzarella Medallions and Brie. Blue Cheese and Goat Cheese are also quite commonly used.
Choose your supporting flavors. Best meats to use are peppered salami, prosciutto, genoa salami and pepperoni. Fruit adds a delicious sweetness to your board, which offsets the saltier meats and cheeses. Some of the best fruits to use are grapes, strawberries, pears, apples and blueberries. You could also include some dried fruits such as dried apricots, figs or golden raisins.
Choose your crackers.
For crackers on a charcuterie board, sliced French bread, Rosemary crackers, and wholewheat crackers all pair well with the other ingredients.
The finishing touch. To round out your board, add an assortment of jams, nuts, and other items. Some options would be fig jam, honey, olive oil, pitted olives, and roasted nuts such as pistachios, almonds, or pecans. Add in some fresh cuts of evergreen or cranberries to give it that fun holiday flare! Half the fun of charcuterie boards is making them with friends and family.

On October 27, 2020, the Brazos Valley community came together to support 136 nonprofits in a big way. We couldn’t have done it without all of you: donors who gave with gusto, nonprofits who worked hard to communicate the need in our communities, our fabulous community giving sponsors, and our wonderful media partners who
helped spread the word! Brazos Valley Gives raised over $633,000 for local nonprofits in the Brazos Valley. Plans are underway for the 3rd annual Brazos Valley Gives, visit brazosvalleygives.org for more information.
PACT Design Studio was recently named a 2020 Aggie 100 Company! Congratulations to their team for all of their hard work.
Water to Wine found a way to honor local veterans by offering free photo shoots for veterans in the community with their families. “Our nation and freedoms don’t come for free and we understand that and so we just wanted to say, from Water to Wine Productions and Marta Nicole Photography, we just want to thank our veterans,” said Nicole Morten, owner of Water to Wine Productions. Thank you, Water to Wine, and thank you to our local Veterans for your service to this great country!
