Long

COVID with Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN)

Persistent fatigue and brain fog from Long COVID are no longer a mystery, and there's hope for those suffering. Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) is emerging as a powerful ally in the battle against post-viral symptoms.

WHY LDN?

KEY BENEFITS OF LDN FOR LONG COVID:

• Boosts energy and relieves fatigue

• Reduces pain and improves sleep

• Supports immune health and recovery

• Modulates inflammation for faster healing

COMPOUNDED, TAILORED TREATMENTS

Full Page Ad Letter Bleed 9”

LDN modulates the immune system and reduces inflammation, making it ideal for treating the lingering effects of COVID-19. By enhancing natural opioid production, LDN helps repair tissue, reduce pain, and improve energy levels. It targets harmful cytokines like IL-6, often elevated in Long COVID patients. It also supports viral clearance of SARS-CoV-2 and prevents immunothrombosis.

X 11.5”

LDN isn’t available commercially, but it can be compounded in forms that fit every patient’s needs:

• Capsules: Adjustable dosages (most common 0.5mg-6mg)

• Oral liquids: Adjustable dosages (0.1mg–16mg)

• Sublingual drops: Fast absorption for those with swallowing issues

• Topical creams: Great for skin conditions

Presidents Message

Dear members,

As we wrap up 2024, I reflect on how much has been accomplished, and I am incredibly grateful for each of you—my colleagues—whose unwavering commitment continues to strengthen the naturopathic profession. This year has been especially busy, but it's clear that the progress we’ve made is a direct result of our collective dedication. I want to take a moment to recognize the unwavering dedication of the BCND Board of Directors, who generously volunteer their time in service to our profession. Our progress would not be possible without the steadfast support of our administrative team, David and Killian, and our Executive Director, Alix. Together, they form the backbone of our organization, and through our collective collaboration, we continue to advance with purpose and productivity.

The importance of collaboration and collegiality has never been more evident. Our work is not in

competition with other healthcare providers—we all share the common goal of delivering the best possible care to our patients and communities. As we continue to navigate changes within our regulatory environment, particularly with the shift to a new College, it’s critical that we remain united. Working together strengthens our voices and ensures that we are part of a broader conversation about the future of healthcare in BC.

This year has also marked significant strides in our government relations and communications efforts. We’ve had numerous meetings with key government officials and ministry staff, ensuring that NDs continue to be recognized as vital contributors to improving access to care. Our relationship-building with ministries like Health, the former Mental Health & Addictions (now wrapped into the Ministry of Health), and Division of Lab Services within the Ministry of Health is already showing results, and we will continue to build on these gains in 2025.

Additionally, some of our new committees have launched, offering more ways for members to get involved and contribute to the future direction

of our profession. With a focus on issues like Mental Health and Addictions, as well as Scope of Practice, these committees provide a platform for collaboration and advocacy. We have also made strides with new discussion papers and issues briefs that articulate the value NDs bring to healthcare (we will share these when ready!). Our soon to be revamped website will showcase all this work, and I encourage you to visit it regularly for updates and opportunities to get involved.

Strategic planning remains a cornerstone of our work. The entire Board of Directors met in early October to finalize and approve a new strategic plan for 2025-27. Tactical plans have also been developed and we are ready to hit the ground running in 2025 and accomplish our goals and set a roadmap for the year ahead.

With the 2024 provincial election concluded and a new government in place, BCND is now turning its attention to collaborating with MLAs across all parties to elevate awareness of the invaluable contributions NDs make to healthcare. We have proactively reached out to the Premier, the leaders of the Opposition and the Green Party, as well as the

newly appointed Health Minister, and the Shadow Critic on Health extending our congratulations and inviting dialogue. These initiatives will further strengthen our advocacy efforts and set the stage for continued progress in 2025 and beyond, as we champion the vital role NDs play in BC’s healthcare system.

As we look ahead to the new year, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your ongoing dedication to the profession. The insights we will be gathering from our recently launched 2024 membership survey will undoubtedly prove invaluable as we shape our advocacy and strategic initiatives moving forward. Your feedback is instrumental in guiding our efforts to ensure that BCND is aligned with the needs of NDs across the province. I hope you enjoy a safe and restful holiday season, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in 2025.

Established in 2014, the World Naturopathic Federation represents 78 naturopathic organizations from around the world to “promote, support and advance the global naturopathic profession”. This internationally united community continues to push forward by publishing naturopathic research, establishing global regulatory and educational standards, and participating in international health meetings, including those hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Canadians have been a part of the WNF since its beginning. Dr. Iva Lloyd, ND; Dr. Dennis O’Hara PhD, ND; and Shawn O’Reilly outgoing Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors, were among the first Canadian representatives and an integral part in the formation of the WNF. Since its inception, many from across the country have stepped up to support the efforts and various international projects of the WNF. Today, BCND is extremely proud to also be represented at the WNF.

Dr. Claire Watson is a Naturopathic Doctor from Vancouver Island who volunteers on the WNF Communications Committee as the co-manager of social media. She is a member of both the BCND and the CAND and is very proud to be able to support the profession on a global level.

Her efforts on the international team have provided consistent content on five social media platforms and she continues to assist in developing new ways of sharing WNF projects including: research, publications, naturopathic history, environmental health information, and more. Dr. Watson is consistently inspired by the fantastic work going on globally by the naturopathic profession. Recently, her efforts have earned her the WNF Volunteer Award in appreciation of more than two years of dedicated service.

Congratulations to Claire on this honour! All of us at BCND thank her for her contributions to naturopathic medicine locally and internationally.

Volunteering with the WNF has truly been an opportunity to see what is possible when we work together. Around the world there are many names for a naturopathic doctor, however we all are more than any label or title. We are educators, researchers, community leaders, conservationists, entrepreneurs, artists, and more. When we show up together under the singular title of “naturopathy” and bring our authentic selves and individual talents, we make a difference beyond what we ever thought was possible.

The publications of the WNF are an example of this. They are the result of the work of many contributors and establish credibility in our profession. Along with these publications, those skilled in public speaking have established momentum towards seats at various international tables.

Dr. Claire Watson, ND

However, the grounding fact is that the WNF, CAND and BCND would not be here if it weren’t for the people like you -- our community of naturopathic doctors. It is in this awareness that my pride in the work I do was rekindled. No matter where you show up with the principles of naturopathy, you are holding value for naturopathic, integrative, traditional, and holistic practices. Together, at international tables, we are making a statement that natural medicine is not only important but requires consideration when discussing the wellbeing of our global community.

My hope is to share a perspective of how valuable each member of the BCND is when holding a spot for natural medicine on a global level. By just being naturopathic doctors you are making a difference. So, thank you!

A Note from Dr. Claire Watson, ND

Advancing Naturopathic Medicine: BCND’s Ongoing Efforts to Strengthen the Profession and Expand Access to Care

As BCND continues to advance the profession of naturopathic medicine, we are actively engaged in numerous initiatives that position NDs as key players in BC's health landscape.

One of our core advocacy efforts is with the Allied Health Policy Secretariat, where we collaborate with allied health partners to highlight the role of private providers in primary care. This work aims to expand the definition of primary care to better include private care providers, ensuring they are recognized for their valuable contributions to patient care.

We are also addressing the current limitations of MSP premium rates for allied health providers. Together with our association colleagues, we are working to engage policymakers to advocate for higher reimbursement rates, which would increase access to essential services provided by NDs.

BCND has also been in direct discussions with the Ministry of Health, focusing on expanding lab services and strengthening NDs’ role in mental health and addictions care. These conversations have been positive, and we look forward to continuing this dialogue as we work to integrate

NDs more fully into the healthcare system. To further cement NDs as key players in the health landscape, we are developing position papers on mental health & addictions and women’s health, which will be presented to the Ministry as part of our ongoing advocacy efforts. These papers will demonstrate the breadth and versatility of NDs in providing accessible and holistic care.

Public outreach is another key focus, and we are hoping to have an op-ed published soon to elevate the understanding of NDs' role in the health system. Alongside this, we are enhancing our communications efforts through issue briefs, website updates, and social media to raise public awareness about the essential services NDs offer.

BCND is also proud that an ND serves on the Professional Education Working Group (PEWG), a subcommittee of the British Columbia Immunization Committee. The involvement of Dr. Janine Fraser, ND, with the PEWG highlights the

important contributions NDs make to public health. Her contributions bring a patient-centered and integrative approach to public health professional discussions, ensuring the naturopathic perspective is thoughtfully represented. As well, Dr. Fraser works in collaboration with committee colleagues to ensure education messaging is inclusive and resonates broadly with all professional and patient populations, with particular attention to those who may be underserved.

Together, these efforts form a comprehensive approach to ensuring that naturopathic doctors are recognized and integrated as central figures providing much needed access to care for British Columbians. With continued collaboration and strategic advocacy, BCND remains committed to advancing the profession and expanding the reach of naturopathic care.

Strengthening

Naturopathic Medicine: BCND’s Collaborative

Approach to Expanding the Role of NDs in BC’s Healthcare System

BCND is committed to strengthening the role of naturopathic doctors (NDs) in BC’s healthcare system by fostering collaboration across various healthcare sectors. Through ongoing discussions with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals, BCND is working to create shared goals and enhance the integration of NDs into care teams.

BCND is also engaging with key stakeholders, including members of the College of Complementary Health Professions of BC (CCHPBC), other BC health associations, and the Ministry of Health. These efforts aim to expand NDs' roles, particularly in improving access to care and supporting patients across diverse health needs.

In addition to these efforts, BCND remains connected with leading organizations like LifeLabs, WorkSafeBC, and ICBC, ensuring NDs are recognized as vital contributors to the healthcare system. By collaborating with ND associations across Canada and the U.S., BCND is helping raise

the profile of naturopathic medicine on a larger scale.

Another critical focus is BCND’s advocacy for naturopathic doctors in the implementation of the new Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA). With Bill 36 passing in November 2022, BCND is working closely with the Healthcare Associations of BC to ensure NDs have a strong voice in the regulations and standards set by the HPOA, ensuring the profession's interests are represented during this transition. While we have yet to hear when the new HPOA comes into force, we will continue to collaborate, seek clarity and provide details to our membership as we have them.

Through these combined efforts, BCND is committed to securing a strong, recognized role for NDs within BC's evolving healthcare landscape, ensuring that naturopathic medicine is a valued part of patient care and the broader healthcare system.

Family Naturopathic Clinic (FNC) Certification

The Victoria based FNC is an award-winning clinic providing free naturopathic care to young, lowincome families since 2007. The FNC is a teaching clinic for naturopathic interns offering invaluable high volume practical education in family health care and in serving vulnerable populations.

FNC aims to serve the community by removing financial barriers to naturopathic medical care. The clinic works to create an overall sense of goodwill for naturopathic medicine in the community and with policy makers, as NDs know naturopathic medicine can be part of the solution to our health care crisis.

This year they are experiencing a funding deficit. Please consider supporting the FNC in any way you can with either:

• A one-time donation or

• Monthly or yearly supports

FNC will recognize your donation on their website and marketing materials. Tax receipts are available. Donate by going to the website, learn more by emailing office@familynaturopathicclinic.org, or scan the QR code shown .

Certification for naturopathic doctors (NDs) is an excellent way to deepen expertise and expand areas of practice. It demonstrates a commitment to advanced learning and provides patients with greater confidence in receiving specialized care.

Certification can open doors to new career opportunities, build professional networks, and support collaboration with other healthcare providers. For NDs, it's a powerful way to stand out in a growing field while offering even more comprehensive and tailored care to patients.

CCNM Students’ Corner

Season's Greetings from CCNM – Boucher!

As we head into the new year, I’d like to reflect on and consider the importance of growth and opportunity.

At the beginning of October, our campus hosted our annual health fair. As students, these fairs are extremely beneficial and encouraging for a multitude of reasons. They allow us to network with a variety of exhibitors, ranging from supplement companies, research facilitators and sponsors, and we were grateful to have the presence of the BCND on our campus as well.

The uplifting impact these fairs have on student life is significant. It allows us to learn new information about the natural health industry from some of the top health experts. Health fairs offer excellent opportunities to network with professionals in naturopathic medicine, connect with fellow students, explore product samples, compare brands, and learn about the latest research, products, and services. This allows us to

gain first-hand experience with different treatment modalities, helping us to relate closer to our learning material and providing a deeper level of understanding of possible recommendations for future patients.

Opportunities like these fairs help to inspire students and foster the growth of knowledge of our fascinating field of practice. As we transition into 2025, I would like to encourage naturopathic doctors across the province to keep an eye out for ways that you can also help support our continued growth into our careers. We are envisioning some very exciting events in the new year, and we will look forward to connecting with all of you.

Wishing all of you a happy, healthy and successful new year!

Yours in health, Emily Chauder

Financial Planning

Feeling burnt out and overwhelmed is a common experience, and you’re not alone. When juggling a busy schedule and focusing on just getting through the day or week, planning can feel daunting.

Some NDs are addressing these challenges by forming partnerships to share responsibilities like administrative work, marketing, and clinic management. While this approach can greatly benefit your practice, it’s essential to plan for potential liabilities. For instance, what would happen if a partner became ill, incapacitated, or, in the worst-case scenario, passes away? Do you have a buy-sell agreement in place? And if so, have you arranged the necessary funding to ensure it’s actionable? Planning now can save significant challenges later.

What follows is a hypothetical case study to show you how to mitigate some of these risks.

David has been practicing naturopathic medicine as an associate at a clinic for over five years. He has established a solid foundation of committed patients, and his practice is growing steadily. The timing is optimal for him to pursue his dream to open a sports medicine clinic with Rob, his longtime friend and a chiropractor. David and Rob are both married and each is expecting a child; David his first and Rob his second. They have signed a lease on a location, secured financing of $500,000 and contracted other practitioners who will join as associates of their clinic.

Approaching the lender, it was brought to David and Rob’s attention that assurance for the debt obligation via life and disability insurance was required if either partner became sick, injured or died. In discussions, the business partners felt it crucial to keep the business debt separate from personal obligations so they purchased an insurance policy on David and Rob whereby the

benefit of $500,000 would be paid on the first death. As well, they each purchased a disability policy that would provide a monthly benefit to cover the amortization period of the loan. This proved to be a cost-effective plan providing assurance with guaranteed fixed payments. The partners were one another’s beneficiary allowing proceeds to be received tax free. To satisfy the lender, an absolute assignment was established which stipulates the lender has an interest in the life and disability proceeds. The insurance contract in combination with the absolute assignment will protect David, Rob, their business, families, as well as the lender. Since insurance was required to satisfy the loan, premiums can be deductible as a business expense.

The due diligence practiced by the lender and insurance companies proved to be a valuable lesson.

Insurance offers peace of mind helps mitigate the risk of severe financial challenges, and provides individuals, their families, businesses, and partners with greater control and valuable options. Understanding what is available in the marketplace and exploring the potential deductibility of premiums is essential to making informed decisions.

Below is coverage checklist for business owners:

• Funding a buy/sell agreement - the continuation of the business and the future purchase of shares amongst shareholders is funded in the event of death or disability.

• Key person coverage - protects the business from the loss of its most valuable contributors.

• Business overhead protection - provides reimbursement for business expenses in the event of an owner’s disability.

• Business loan protection - covers outstanding business loans or loan interest.

• Critical illness coverage - pays a lump sum taxfree benefit upon diagnosis (either to you or your company depending on how the plan is set up).

• Life insurance – protects your loved ones in the event something happens to you.

• Disability insurance – protects you in the event you cannot work due to injury or illness.

Managing risks is essential, and there’s no better time than the present to take control and shape the future. Knowledge, particularly in effective

financial planning, empowers us to make informed decisions, minimizing risks in both business and daily life. Since strategies can often be complex, consulting an insurance specialist is crucial. By having a plan to manage the unexpected, you can gain peace of mind and the security of knowing that even in challenging circumstances, your business and family are set up for success. While it may seem overwhelming, taking even small steps toward a plan is far better than doing nothing— start today to build a stronger foundation for the future.
