provider for the Erchonia laser that has been proven through double-blind clinical trial to decrease pain by 66%. How Does Low Level Laser Therapy (3LT®) Work? (cold), not thermal. Hot lasers in the medical world are used for surgical precision while cold lasers are used for healing precision. During treatment of the tissue with the 635nm laser, an interaction between cells and photons takes place— tissue at the cellular level. The cold laser enters the tissue, alters cell membrane permeability, and at the cellular level is absorbed in the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the “Powerhouse”of the cells and make ATP which is needed for the life enhancement process of every cell.

The benefits of Low Level Laser Therapy Dr. Michael Liberti of Bethel Station Chiropractic Office is no stranger to low back pain. As a chiropractor he’s been treating low back pain patients for over 30 years. However, as a chiropractor, bending over those patients all day long has caused him to experience more than his share of personal low back pain. “Like many people, even when we try to use proper bending and ergonomic techniques, we can’t always avoid hurting our back.” Liberti said. For example, he said, in 2009 he drove to Boston to attend a conference and then sat in a less than ideal chair. All the sitting had really stirred up his low back problems. One of the topics at the conference was the use of Low Level Laser Therapy for lower back pain. As a chiropractor he used many different therapies in conjunction with his chiropractic adjustments, so when the conference presenter asked if anyone in the audience had active lower back pain he was the first to volunteer. He received a chiropractic adjustment followed by three minutes of therapy with an Erchonia PL5 Low Level Laser. “The amount of pain relief I received was so significant that I knew then that this was an additional treatment I wanted to be able to offer my patients,” he said. After about six months of follow up research on the how and whys of LLLT he took the plunge and purchased the Erchonia laser. Since then he has used the laser alone or in combination with traditional chiropractic procedures to treat a wide variety of conditions including back and neck pain including arm and sciatic pain caused by disc

degeneration and herniated discs. Its also used to treat other conditions like: carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, rotator cuff injuries, hip and knee pain, plantar fasciitis and many more. Low Level Laser is used by professional sports teams, as well as some burn centers and wound clinics to heal tissue and reduce pain, by as much as 60 percent faster than normal healing, according to a number of published studies. LLLT heals by means of a photochemical reaction that allows mitochondria, the power house of your cells, to produce more energy which can help heal damaged and irritated tissues. Low level Laser Therapy does not produce any heat, and in studies done on LLLT there are no reported negative side effects like those found in some over the counter and prescription pain medications. Liberti estimates that his office is using the Erchonia Laser on about 30 percent of his patients and the number is growing. Since LLLT is not covered by most insurances, Bethel Station Chiropractic Office has kept the cost at about $30 per treatment. “Since most of the treatment we provide to our patients is covered at least in part by insurances, the out of pocket cost for the typical six-treatment trial of therapy for the laser is well within most people’s budget” said Liberti. “Low Level Laser Therapy has become an important piece of the treatment programs we are using to treat back and joint pain in our practice. It is effective and doesn’t have the dangers and side effects associated with surgery

It’s really becoming a front line treatment for many joint problems and fits in nicely with our natural approach to healing in our office. There is no treatment that works every time for every patient but it makes a lot of sense to start with the safest treatments first. If these conservative measures are not successful the more radical treatments like drugs and surgery are still available. Our goal is to use Laser and other more natural treatments to help as many people as possible avoid the drug and surgical treatments whenever possible.”

Eyes on health: What your eyes can tell doctors People who have been putting off eye examinations may want to call their opthalmologists to schedule an appointment. That’s because vision checkups can do more than protect your eyes. By examining the eyes, doctors may have a window into health problems affecting other areas of the body. Researchers recently discovered a link between detected retinal amyloid plaques and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. While evidence was found in lab mice, autopsies of at least eight Alzheimer’s disease patients have also shown amyloid plaques, which are known to interfere with memory and other mental functions, present in the retinas. Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., are gearing up for larger studies of humans to determine if an Alzheimer’s imaging technique can be perfected.

Dementia is not the only thing that doctors may be able to detect through an eye exam. Jaundice in the whites of the eyes may indicate liver disease, and early warning signs of diabetes may be detectable in the eyes. The American Academy of Opthalmology says the eye is the only place where doctors can see veins, arteries and a nerve without surgery, and eye examinations are increasingly being relied on to gauge overall health. The following are a few additional conditions that may be detected through the eyes. Allergies: Patients may be referred to an allergy specialist if they exhibit dark under-eye circles. While this can be a sign of aging, dark circles, sometimes referred to as “allergic shiners,” also may indicate certain allergies. When clogged sinuses cause a blockage of blood flow in the nasal passages around the eye, darkness may result. This symptom in conjunction with persistent nasal congestion could be a sure sign of allergies. High cholesterol: The presence of bumpy, yellowish patches on the eyelid, known as xanthelasma palpebra, is a warning sign of high cholesterol, which is often initially diagnosed during a routine eye exam.

Cancer: Some cancer metastases can be detected during an eye exam. The presence of a bump or brown spot on the eyelid also may be indicative of skin cancer. Many malignant eyelid tumors are basal-cell carcinoma. If the spot is brown, it’s more likely to be malignant melanoma. Thyroid issues: When the outer one-third of the brow (the part closest to the ear) begins to disappear on its own, this is a common sign of thyroid disease. The thyroid helps regulate metabolism, and thyroid hormones are essential to hair production. Hair loss may occur elsewhere, but is much more visible in the brows. Clogged arteries: Blockages in the smaller veins in the retina may indicate clogs caused by arterial plaque. This will show up as a retinal occlusion in a visual exam. If blood vessels in the eyes are blocked, clogged arteries may be present elsewhere in the body, so a cardiology workup may be ordered. Bell’s palsy: The inability to close one eye or to control tear production in that eye may be a sign of Bell’s palsy. This is a condition of the nervous system that controls facial muscles, causing temporary paralysis in one side of the face. Sometimes Bell’s palsy follows a viral or bacterial infection.

It is possible to exercise safely during pregnancy Pregnant women have mixed views on staying in shape. Some mothers-to-be view pregnancy as a chance to cast aside concerns about body image and enjoy the freedom to eat a little more and revel in the changes their body undergoes during pregnancy. Other women want to remain physically fit and return to their pre-baby weight as soon as possible. Regardless of the camp you fall into, it’s important to know that exercising during pregnancy is a safe option for many women, provided it is endorsed by a doctor. As long as women keep the health of their babies in mind and consult their physicians, staying fit throughout a pregnancy is a very real possibility. Exercise and healthy eating can keep both mom and baby healthy throughout the pregnancy. Although it can be tempting to sit back and relax for nine months, it actually may be better for all involved to remain physically active rather than sedentary. Exercise can ease back pain and other aches, and it can prevent excess weight gain that may contribute to an overly large baby, which can make labor and delivery more difficult. Exercise during pregnancy can reduce the risk of gestational diabetes, pregnancyrelated high blood pressure, and even postpartum depression. Additionally, physical activity during pregnancy can help with stamina and muscle strength, which will be essential during the delivery process. The American Pregnancy Association says that exercise does not increase the risk for miscarriage in healthy women with a normal, low-risk pregnancy. Many women who have been following regular exercise regimens prior to their pregnancies can usually maintain some level of physical activity throughout the pregnancy. Sports or activities where a person might have a hard fall or be thrown off balance are not advised. These include horseback riding, gymnastics and bicycling. Sports where you can be hit in the stomach, such as tennis, are potentially unsafe and should be avoided.

www.birthwisemidwifery.net Most experts advise pregnant women capable of exercise to aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least three times per week. A more rigorous workout schedule may lead to a low-weight baby or could put excess strain on pelvic floor muscles that may lead to early labor. When pregnant women are exercising, here are some additional guidelines. * Avoid exercise in extremely hot or cold weather. * Wear comfortable footwear that supports the ankles and arches of the feet. * Take frequent breaks. * Drink plenty of water. * Begin slowly and gradually build stamina. * Listen to your body and do not push yourself if you are tired or in pain. * Avoid exercise that involves lying flat on the back during the second and third trimesters, as this decreases blood flow to the uterus. * Always keep your doctor abreast of your exercise schedule and consult with him or her if you plan to include any new activities in your regimen.

Calorie-conscious people often turn to salads as a low-calorie options come mealtime. Salads can be consumed at any time of the day and are no longer considered just an appetizer or side dish. Despite their simplicity, healthy salads are not always easy to make. But there is a method to making the perfect salad. The following are a handful of ways calorieconscious men and women can prepare a healthy and delicious salad. * Start with fresh ingredients. Choose your own fresh ingredients rather than buying prepackaged salads. Salad mixes sold in many stores may be convenient, but they tend to get old rather quickly and could be hiding already spoiled pieces of lettuce and other greens. Use the salad kits as a guideline to which lettuce varieties go well together, then buy your own heads of lettuce. This may take more time, but it will be worth the effort. Mixing spicy greens with sweet ones like endive and romaine will balance flavors. Also, choose varying textures of greens so that there is variety in every bite. * Wash everything well. It is essential to wash salad greens thoroughly, not only for flavor but also for safety. Even organic lettuces grown with all-natural ingredients could be harbingers of bacteria, and you don’t want to run the risk of becoming ill due to a foodborne pathogen. E-coli outbreaks have been traced back to spinach and other lettuces in the past, requiring recalls on these foods. Lettuce leaves also can collect dirt and silt, which tend to lodge in the inner ends of lettuces. Insects also may be hiding out in salad

greens, and that can be an unwelcome surprise to anyone. Soak the salad greens in a bowl of cold water, then drain and repeat. The cold water will not only clean the lettuce but also perk up the leaves. Wash all salad accoutrements, including tomatoes, cucumbers and citrus fruit rinds, as well. * Thoroughly dry. Nothing can ruin a salad faster than limp, overly wet leaves. Salad spinners are invaluable tools that can quickly rid leaves of moisture. Dry the lettuce in batches to ensure it is as dry as an be. * Choose fresh vegetables to add punch to salads. To improve the nutritional content of salads, add an array of vibrantly colored raw vegetables. Tomatoes, peppers, artichoke hearts and beets can be combined to create a healthy and delicious salad that’s loaded with flavor and vitamins. * Add lean protein. If the salad will be your entree, adding lean protein can help you feel more satisfied after you eat. Anything from tofu to sliced salmon to kidney beans can add protein and even fiber to a salad to make it a more complete meal. * Add dressing at the end. Wait until the last possible minute before you add salad dressing. When adding the dressing, remember the dressing should enhance the flavors of the salad and not overpower them. Light vinaigrettes made with seasoned vinegar and oil pair well with many salad combinations. Keep in mind that the oil in a dressing will penetrate the lettuce and make it limp. That is why the dressing should be added just before the salad is served. Think about placing a dollop of dressing in the bottom of a salad bowl and then toss right before eating to mix all ingredients. Once you have become a master of salad basics, consider new ingredients and flavors to come up with combinations that please the palate.

Sun myths exposed When the weather gets warmer, a great number of people take to the outdoors to participate in athletics, to enjoy a meal al fresco or to take a dip in a pool. However, fun in the sun does come with risk, most notably overexposure to the sun’s potentially harmful rays. Misinformation often reigns supreme with regards to sun exposure. Here are some common sun myths debunked. Myth: I don’t have to worry about the sun on cloudy days. Truth: There is a risk of exposure to UV radiation even on cloudy days, necessitating the application of a sunscreen or sunblock. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, up to 80 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can still pass through the clouds. Even if the weather is cool or overcast, apply sunblock before going outdoors.

Myth: Most sun damage occurs before age 18. Truth: Recent studies indicate that previous estimates were inaccurate and that only 25 percent of sun exposure occurs during childhood. That makes being sun-smart important at any age. Myth: Establishing a base tan provides a safe way to tan afterward. Truth: There is no such thing as a safe tan if it’s coming from the sun or a tanning bed. Spending prolonged periods of time outdoors unprotected from the sun can damage the skin. For those who want to have skin that glows, consider a selftanning lotion. Myth: Light clothing reflects the sun’s rays while dark colors absorb it. Truth: UV rays tend to pass through light-colored fabrics easier than darker ones. If you are able to see light through a piece of clothing, there’s a good chance UV rays can pass right through to the skin. Choose deep colors to protect the skin better.

Myth: Sun rays do not pass through windows. Truth: UVB rays cannot pass through windows but UVA rays can. While you may not get a sunburn sitting next to a window, you may experience premature aging from freckling and wrinkles. Myth: A beach umbrella is adequate protection from the sun at the beach. Truth: Although the umbrella will shade you somewhat, the surrounding sand reflects up to 17 percent of UV radiation. That means you can still get skin damage if you don’t apply sunblock. Myth: Makeup that contains SPF is protection enough. Truth: Some makeup will offer a light measure of protection from the sun, but will not be adequate. Furthermore, some shiny or glossy products actually can draw the UV rays to areas where the product was applied. Myth: Sunscreens can increase skin cancer rates. Truth: Research indicates this is only the case if you use sunscreen to spend more

time out in the sun. When used correctly, sunscreens can lower skin cancer rates. Myth: Dark-skinned individuals do not get sunburn. Truth: Although people with more melanin pigment in their skin may not burn at the same rate as lighter-skinned individuals, there is still the chance for skin damage if sunscreen isn’t used. Myth: Vitamin D deficiency will occur if I don’t spend long times out in the sun. Truth: While it’s true that sunlight exposure is necessary for the body to produce vitamin D naturally, it doesn’t take that much exposure to do so, even when wearing sunscreen. The Cancer Council of New South Wales says most people get enough vitamin D from their everyday activities during the summer, even when protected with hats, sunscreen and clothing. During the months when there is limited sunlight, a supplement may be needed. Getting outdoors when the weather is pleasant can be enjoyable provided revelers are smart about using sun protection.

How to make flossing easier for kids

It is well known that a combination of brushing, flossing and periodic dental checkups are essential to oral health. Some parents teach their children to brush thoroughly early on, even taking them for dental visits at young ages so youngsters can become acclimated to the dentist’s office. But flossing is one component of oral hygiene that may be overlooked because many kids simply don’t enjoy it. Flossing is one of those tasks that people understand they must do regularly, but many still do not. According to Humana

Dental, flossing cleans bacteria and trapped food from between the teeth. Brushing only reaches the surface of the teeth, but floss is required to get into the small crevices to prevent bacteria from turning into plaque buildup. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once per day. It is far better to floss once a day and do a thorough job rather than several times a day and miss areas of the mouth by doing it quickly. Children should be urged to floss regularly in addition to brushing. However, flossing can be cumbersome for youngsters who have yet to develop the dexterity needed to manipulate dental floss. There are many products available and techniques that can be used to assist children with cleaning between their teeth. The following are some flossing tips for kids. * Begin the introduction to floss early. The younger children are introduced to floss, the more likely they are to embrace flossing as part of their oral hygiene routine.

* Show visual proof of the benefits of flossing. Oftentimes, children are more likely to respond to something they can see. Show pictures of dental decay and what occurs when proper oral hygiene is not followed. This may help make the concept of flossing more attractive. * Get the proper tools. Kids cannot floss unless they have floss products on hand. There are various age-appropriate flossers and types of dental floss available. Children may not be able to use dental floss properly because of a lack of dexterity. However, floss picks are much easier to hold and work between the teeth, particularly for kids with small hands. Floss should always be on hand, whether at home or when you go on vacation. * Let kids choose. Take kids down the dental aisle at the store and let them pick and choose which products they want to use. They may be more excited to brush and floss if they’re using something they picked out themselves. * Lead by example. Children will be more likely to floss if they see their parents

flossing. That means adults should floss regularly and let their children watch and learn.

Benefits of flossing

Removing bacteria and trapped food from teeth has a number of benefits. Bacteria can cause bad breath, but flossing and brushing helps to keep breath smelling fresh. Dirty teeth can lead to dental carries. Children may be more inclined to floss if they know they’ll be preventing cavities and avoiding potentially painful trips to the dentist. Plaque trapped between the teeth and along the gum line that leads to periodontal disease puts a person at a greater risk for heart disease. There are some studies that show bacteria from the mouth can end up in the bloodstream. Flossing is a necessary component of good oral hygiene. Everyone should floss, no matter their age, and children should begin flossing as soon as their mouth starts to fill out with pearly whites.

The many uses of Botox By Dr. Paul C. Schoenbeck This day and age, just about everywhere you turn, you can find some sort of health and beauty tip. We are overwhelmed with products that will make us look younger and feel better. There are weight loss products, hair products, diet supplements, probiotics, skin creams, and just about anything you can think of. Botox has become one of the many products/treatments receiving much of this attention. Most people have heard of Botox, and many of you may not know exactly what it is. I get many questions every day on this subject and will share the most popular ones here. So in the next few paragraphs I will let you in one this popular treatment. First, Botox is not a “poison”. It is derived from a “poison” (really a bacteria) but that’s where it ends. Botox is like many pharmaceuticals. It starts out from a naturally occurring product or compound and is treated in the laboratory to achieve the desired effects. Once in the laboratory, it undergoes many changes and additions which make it far removed from its original compound. Think of this; Penicillin is derived from a mold. It could make you sick if you ate it on its own, but when it gets treated in the laboratory, it becomes a drug that can heal you and prevent you from death. So many drugs are derived from substances that could harm you, yet when we extract what we want from them, and change them, they have a different effect. Botox is the same. Lines and wrinkles are not what most people want on their faces, it makes us appear older and less appealing. So we treat these areas to keep us from appearing older than we really are. Botox works by relaxing the muscles and keeping muscles from causing wrinkles and lines. It does this for a time (about three to four months), then the muscles go back to doing what they were doing. Basically, Botox stops the muscle from receiving the signal from the brain to squeeze a muscle. Muscles that squeeze and pull affect the skin over time by causing wrinkles and lines. The nice thing about Botox is that it is not a permanent treatment and the person can stop using it at any time without any permanent affects. Botox has many uses. With research ongoing, Botox has been found to help many maladies and medical problems. Eye disorders like eye-twitching (blepharospasm), and strabismus (crossed eyes) are treated. Spasticity of arms and legs are treated, urinary incontinence,

migraines, are all treated with Botox. Botox also treats a condition called Axillary Hyperhydrosis. Axillary Hyperhydrosis is also known as armpit sweating. I have had very good results in treating this condition. Armpit sweating is an embarrassing and uncontrollable condition that affects many people. 2%-3% of the population suffers from this. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but there are 300 million people in the country and 2% translates to 6 million people! Most of us know someone who suffers from this condition. People with this condition suffer from business and social interactions that are embarrassing to say the least. From stained clothes and body odor, to avoiding certain social occasions, this condition makes it difficult to get by. I have patients that wear absorbent pads in their armpits just to avoid the look of wetness in their clothes. They have to choose clothing that hides the condition. Treating these people with Botox has changed their life. They can interact and go about their daily activities without the constant daily worry of their condition. It gives them confidence and peace of mind. For these people, Botox has worked wonders. There are many uses for Botox, it isn’t just for wrinkles. It is a safe and effective way to enhance your look, change your life, give you confidence, and peace of mind. If you are interested in the many benefits of Botox or know someone who could benefit from knowing more, please contact me. I would be happy to give you a free consultation and help you understand the options for treating your concerns. I can be reached at North Country Dental www.ncdnh.com or email me: dr2th@ ncdnh.com

The many health benefits of massage therapy Advertisements for vacation destinations often paint couples’ massages as the premier romantic activity. It’s true that massages can be relaxing and sensual, making such sessions ideal gifts come Valentine’s Day. Yet, massages aren’t just sultry oils and New Age music. They can actually be very good for overall health. Massage therapy is beneficial in various ways. Massage is no longer just available in upscale health clubs or luxury spas. Massage spas have cropped up in malls, hospitals, clinics, and even office buildings, making massage therapy that much more accessible. The Mayo Clinic notes that while more research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage, it may be helpful for a variety of health ailments. In addition to easing sore muscles, reducing joint pain and helping soft tissue strains or injuries, massage can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety and calm feelings of stress. Massage reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This helps to lift spirits and can often lower blood pressure. Massage also may help to boost the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which are associated with depression. According to Health magazine, massage also can help promote healthy sleep. It has something to do with the effect of massage on delta waves, which are the brain waves connected to deep sleep. There is some evidence that massage can also increase white blood cell counts, promoting improved immunity. Many people rely on massages to relieve pain. According to a report published in 2011 in the American College of Physicians’“Annals of Internal Medicine,” massage helps people in pain feel and function better than those who do not receive treatment. Massage can alleviate stiffness and pain and promote a better range of motion. And pain relief is not just for the back, arms and legs. Massage can reduce risk for migraines and decrease pain from tension headaches.

Massage even has beauty benefits. Rubbing the face and scalp can promote blood flow and encourage lymphatic drainage. This can add vitality to the complexion and plump up the skin. Dull hair may appear more shiny and revitalized. People can explore different types of massage and experiment with what works best for their ailments. Everything from Swedish massage to reflexology is offered at massage clinics. Because massage involves being partially or completely undressed and having a massage therapist touch various areas of the body, it is important to find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable. Make sure that the therapist is fully certified and qualified. It also helps if he or she is properly vetted by the spa or clinic. Therapists will heed a person’s preferences with regard to the massage, only concentrating on the areas specified. If anything feels uncomfortable or a client prefers not to have an area of the body touched, he or she simply needs to address that with the therapist at the beginning of the session. The gift of a massage session can be romantic and improve one’s overall health.
