Newry’s wedding bridge: ‘It’s magical. It’s perfect.’ By Terry Karkos I have photographed several weddings in my photography career, but I had never seen a wedding on a covered bridge — until October, when I stopped by the famous Artist’s Covered Bridge — also known as the Sunday River Bridge — in Newry. There, a professional photographer was taking pictures of Patrick and Sherri Delaney of Auburn following their wedding ceremony. The Delaneys told me they chose the bridge, which is closed to vehicular traffic, because they liked the autumn foliage colors along the Sunday River, which the bridge spans. “And we had a picnic here during the summer and loved it and thought it would be a nice place,” Sherri said. Since then, I’ve learned that many people across the country — and the world — are calling the Newry Town Office to book a time slot on either Saturday or Sunday for their weddings. September 2015 is already nearly filled up, Deputy Clerk Kelly Scott said. From May to Oct. 14 of this year, Scott said, they had 26 bookings for weddings on the scenic bridge. “A rough estimate of weddings that were on our calendars 2009 to October 2014 is 160,” she said.

Some organizations, including the Bethel Chamber of Commerce, are helping the trend by promoting the bridge as a wedding venue. “We know it’s a very popular place,” said Jessie Perkins, the Chamber’s events and marketing director. She said they get a lot of calls seeking unique wedding venues in the area, and tell callers to contact Newry Town Office about the bridge, which is one of only seven covered bridges in the state.

Beautiful, free and very busy

The Artist’s Covered Bridge is an 87-foot-long Paddleford truss span that was built in 1872. It was closed to traffic in 1958 when a new bridge was built downstream on Sunday River Road. The covered bridge is about 4 miles off Route 2. The Rev. Ellie Andrews of Bethel, who is a wedding officiant in the Sunday River Valley area, said that since 1998 she’s done about 700 weddings in Maine and New Hampshire. “I probably do 10 a year at the bridge,” Andrews said. “It’s become more popular. Of course, it’s on the National Register of Historic Places website and it’s free, so it’s a really great place for people to be.”

Western Maine Weddings 3 “The girls at the town office do an amazing job timing out the weddings,” she said. Her wedding ceremonies — excluding the walking in and walking out — last 15 to 20 minutes. So half an hour for a wedding. “I mean (the town office has) it down to a science,” Andrews said. “I know it (the bridge’s popularity as a wedding spot) has gotten to be an issue. Years past — and it really shows — I have literally stood in the middle of the bridge and said goodbye to one bride and groom and hello to another.” If they know they’re abutting one another for time slots, many brides and grooms will converse and share costs of chairs and decorations. “It works out pretty cool,” Andrews said. Some weddings are very simple, involving just the couple and a wedding officiant holding the ceremony within the beauty of the bridge. Other weddings involve elaborate decorations, tables, chairs, food, lighting and more, filling the bridge.

Not all bridge bliss

But the public nature of the bridge means that booking a time slot at the town office for a wedding is no guarantee the bridge will be available, which can lead to some early matrimonial challenges. Newry officials only book time slots as a courtesy. They tell couples this upfront and give them a copy of the bridge’s rules of use, according to Scott, the town’s deputy clerk. “There’s no reserving days. We just give notice here at the town office that says someone will be there at such and such time.” The disclaimer given to wedding couples formulated by Newry selectmen is aimed at reducing the potential for conflicts between wedding parties and other scheduled and unscheduled public gatherings on or near the bridge. Part of the disclaimer reads: “In the past, the calendar entries (for use of the bridge) have ranged from duck races to road rallies to weddings. However, entry on the calendar does not guarantee exclusive use, but

Weddings by Ellie

merely serves notice to anyone who inquires at the office that events are planned. Others may well use the bridge for picnics, bus tours, swimming, photos, etc., without consulting the calendar and are certainly welcome to do so.” But it’s apparent from the bridge’s growing popularity as a wedding site that the anything-can-happen public nature of the bridge is no deterrent. One of the bridge’s obvious pluses is that it is open to the outdoors but still sheltered. “The bridge is . . . the perfect spot no matter what the weather is,” said Andrews. “You don’t need Plan B with the bridge,” she said. “It’s right there. It’s magical. It’s perfect.” Photo: Yeah Bud! Photography www.yeahbudphotography.com/weddings

Bethel brides continue to look for earthy, natural themes for their weddings. Burlap is a repeated trend that continues to dominate the local wedding themes. Brides are choosing hand held bouquets and wrapping the stems with burlap or burlap with a lace overlay. Learning that Pantone chose the color Marsala for the color of 2015 lends itself to our rustic mountain trends. Marsala is a red wine color with undertones of brown. It expresses rootedness, nurturing and earthiness, but is still sophisticated. The flower choices go perfectly with the rustic, sophisticated burlap theme. The list of flower choice is extensive and includes what brides are also looking for–local, in season botanicals. Succulents and fiddleheads are examples as well as dahlias, roses, Dutch hydrangea and safari sunset. High style weddings can use orchids and chocolate cosmos. For a more wild flower look, helleborus and astilbe are in this theme and color palate. Foliage can include coleus and smoke bush and grevillea, as well as pine cones, which give a woodsy theme. The burlap choice is earthy, but still sophisticated when used in weddings. Brides are wrapping their bouquets, arbors, containers, and using burlap for table runners. Burlap is used for the table numbers and flagging. Often the centerpiece containers are mason jars or library boxes. The natural theme runs deep, and each wedding is unique. Because this trend is traditional and simple, it is here to stay.

Tips for writing your own wedding vows A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event for many couples, so brides and grooms wish for the event to be momentous and memorable. As such, couples are increasingly integrating personal nuances into their ceremonies and receptions to tailor weddings to their unique visions. The desire to include personalized wedding vows continues to be a popular trend. If you are considering personalized wedding vows, first realize that it may not be a simple task. That’s because you want the message conveyed to be dear to your heart, and that can be challenging when faced with the pressures and planning of the rest of the wedding. That isn’t to say that writing your own vows is impossible. Here are some guidelines for personalizing your ceremony with your own sentiments. Schedule time for writing. Amid the bustle of dress fittings and interviews with photographers, it can be easy to put off the important task of writing vows for another day. But as any great writer can attest, it takes writing -- and rewriting -- to achieve a finished product you can be proud of. Give the task of writing your vows your undivided attention. Mark it in on your calendar or set a reminder on your computer just as you would any other appointment. Be aware of ceremony guidelines. It is best to check with your officiant and confirm that personalized wedding vows are allowed. During civil ceremonies it’s often acceptable to customize vows as you see fit. However, during religious ceremonies there may be lines of scripture that need to be read or certain passages required. Before you spend hours working on the task, be sure that it is allowed and that your spouse and you are on the same page. Jot down your feelings. Answer some questions about what marriage means to you and how you feel about your spouse. Try to avoid trite sayings and think from your heart and personal experiences. Think about what is the most important thing you want to promise to your future partner. These notes can serve as the starting points for the actual vows. Read inspirational writings. Perhaps there is an author or a poet who inspires you? You can quote certain writers in your vows or let the tone of their works help shape the words of your vows. There also are suggested wedding readings and other quotes about marriage readily available at the library or with a quick search online. Decide on a tone. Although the day is based on love and affection, you may not feel comfortable spouting words of adoration in front of friends and family. Feel free to tap into your unique personality. Humor can be used if it aligns with the way you normally express your affections. Be sure to weave this tone into more traditional passages to create a cohesive expression of your feelings. Establish an outline. Put together all of the words and phrases you’ve jotted down into an outline to help you organize the flow of the vows,

using these words as a blueprint for the vows and building upon them. Make sure the vows will be concise. Aim for your entire speech to be around 1 minute in length to keep everyone engaged and the ceremony moving along. Put everything together. Draft your vows and then practice them by reading out loud. You want to avoid long sentences or anything that trips you up. Although large words may sound impressive, they could make the vows seem too academic and not necessarily heartfelt. Enlist the help of a friend or two to act as your audience to see if the vows sound good and are easily understandable. Writing your own vows can be a way to include personal expressions of love into a couple’s wedding day. Public speaking is seldom easy, nor is finding the perfect words to convey feelings about a future spouse. However, with some practice and inspiration, anyone can draft personalized vows. Make your engagement photoshoot a success When planning an engagement shoot, couples should give themselves carte blanche with regard to style, as the photoshoot need not follow many of the more accepted rules that the wedding itself will ultimately adhere to. Once couples have settled on a style for their photoshoot, there are additional ways to ensure the session is a success. Find a photographer who shares your sensibilities. Photographers can vary greatly in style, and an engagement photoshoot will be most successful when couples find a photographer whose style matches the theme they are looking for with their photoshoot. You likely would not hire a nature photographer to photograph a basketball game, so don’t hire someone who specializes in posed shots if you want your photos to be more lively and spontaneous. Before you hire anyone, ask for samples of each photographer’s work to be certain you’re getting someone who has experiencing shooting the type of photos you want to take. Solicit ideas from the photographer. Some couples already know exactly where they want their engagement photos to be shot and which poses they want to be arranged. However, many couples have little or no experience with professional photoshoots, and such couples should solicit ideas from each photographer they are considering hiring. A skilled and/or seasoned photographer should propose several ideas. Be wary of photographers who offer little input, as you may ultimately be dissatisfied with their work once the shoot has come and gone. Avoid studio shots. Many couples prefer their engagement photos be taken somewhere they have a personal connection to, such as the sight of their first date or a park they frequently visit. Studio photoshoots

might provide the best lighting, but couples have no connection to such spaces, and down the road they may regret not taking the photos in someplace that’s a little more meaningful. In addition, a photoshoot outside the studio affords couples and their photographer more opportunities to experiment and improvise, which can produce a wider array of shots than a studio photoshoot is likely to deliver. Don’t forget candid shots. Candid shots make the photoshoot more fun and loosen couples up a little bit. Many engagement photos will never be seen by anyone other than the photographer and the couple he or she is shooting, so don’t be bashful during candid shots for fear of being embarrassed down the road. Have fun with the candid shots, and your other photos are likely to come out better as a result. An engagement photoshoot should be fun and reflect the personalities of the couple. A few simple strategies can ensure couples’ shoots accomplish both of those things.

How to find a limousine service for your wedding Unforgettable Receptions

Make it Memorable in a Rustic Setting

• Fully Air Conditioned

• Expanive Views • Large Deck • In-House Catering • Private • Full Service Bar

Every bride and groom will need his and her transportation from home to the wedding ceremony and reception. Although there are several options to get couples to and from, many choose a limousine or another fancy rental car as the preferred mode of travel. Though transportation might be one of the more hands-off components of wedding planning, that does not make it any less important. After all, if something goes awry, you can be left stranded with no manner of getting to the wedding. It is important for you to get the best service and the right vehicle for the occasion, which requires some comparison shopping. Initially, seek word-of-mouth recommendations, which can be the best way to narrow down potential limo companies. Ask others which business they used for their special events -- be it weddings, proms, Sweet 16 parties or other important events. Not all limousine services are the same. Price should not be your only method of comparison. Much like a hotel room or a meal at a restaurant, there may be different levels of service among companies. It’s important to compare apples to apples. Figure out a package that will work for you, including size of car, duration of time and any other special

features, such as a stocked bar, and then compare this package among the different limo companies you’re considering. The right vehicle also can make all the difference -- and may help you narrow down your choices among companies. For instance, a business might not have the model you want or that vehicle isn’t available the day of your wedding. Also, be sure there will be enough room and if there is trunk space for luggage for honeymoon essentials. Check whether there are certain add-ons, such as fuel surcharges, driver gratuities, or tolls that are not factored into the base price. Here are some other pointers you should also keep in mind: Book early. Limos, like services from other vendors, will book fast, especially during peak wedding or other seasons. Consider a package. Most companies have put together a package for special events, like weddings. They may be the best value. Check registration. Limo companies need to have a license to operate and proper insurance. Confirm the details. Be sure that the duration of the service, how many people will be transported and all costs are spelled out in a contract for everyone’s protection.

Once a couple has been married, tradition states that they be covered with tossed rice upon exiting the ceremony. The idea of throwing rice began during the Middle Ages, when rice symbolized fertility. Rice was tossed at the married couple in the hopes they would have many children and be blessed with prosperity as a family. A false rumor spread that rice was harmful to birds who would eat the discarded rice and explode, so many people now use birdseed or rose petals as alternatives. However, rest assured, that the rice myth has been debunked by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Find a gown the bridesmaids will all love Close friends and family members are an important component of a couple’s wedding day. Individuals who are especially close to the bride and groom are often asked to become members of the wedding party, which means a bride-to-be will be asking one or more women to play an integral role in the celebration. To set these ladies apart from other guests at the wedding, they are often asked to wear coordinating bridesmaid gowns. Selecting a style and color that is fitting to the unique people of the bridal party can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. As if choosing your maid of honor wasn’t tricky enough, you now must make a host of other decisions as well, all while playing stylist to the wedding party. Fashion sense is as unique as a fingerprint, and it is unlikely the bridesmaids will be able to agree on every aspect of the gowns they will be asked to wear. However, there are ways to narrow down the choices and be as accommodating as possible to their needs.

Size matters

The body shapes and sizes of the women in your bridal party will be different, and this should be kept in mind when selecting a gown style and cut. There are certain dress shapes that are universally flattering, such as A-line. Try to avoid gowns that are extremely form-fitting, as only a few of the bridesmaids may be able to pull off this look successfully. The remainder could be left feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable. Plus, form-fitting clothing will be restrictive and can be difficult to move around in -- particularly considering the gown will be worn for an entire day.

Flattering Color

As a bride you may have a colorscape in your mind for the wedding. But what looks good in table linens and flowers is not always the right choice for clothing. Take the skin tones and hair colors of your bridesmaids into consideration before choosing a dress. Green- and yellow-hued dresses may not look nice on women with olive skin tones, while very pale colors may wash out women with fair skin. Those with dark skin may need a brighter-colored dress.

A wedding is a day . . . A marriage is a lifetime

Price Tag

It is an honor to be asked to be part of a bridal party, but that honor can be very expensive. The bridesmaids are expected to pay for their wardrobe, hair styling, and makeup, as well as parties and gifts for the happy couple. As a courtesy to the women who already will be investing a considerable amount to be a part of your wedding, make every effort to select a gown that is affordable. There are plenty of retailers offering stylish options that may not be as expensive as some specialty stores. Ensuring bridesmaids are happy in their gowns takes a little work but will be well worth the effort.

Be smart about wedding beauty preparation Certain beauty basics and makeup and hair strategies can help any bride look spectacular on her wedding day. The following are some dos and don’ts of wedding day beauty preparations. DO employ the services of a professional hairstylist and makeup artist. Professionals have the experience and tools of the trade to help you to look your best. From contouring to make your face seem slimmer to enlarging the appearance of small eyes, some tricks of the trade are best left to the pros. DON’T forget to schedule a trial run. Make this appointment several months before the wedding day so you have ample time to work with your stylists and experiment with colors and hair arrangements to fit your personality and the style of your gown. Take plenty of pictures and notes so you will remember what needs to be on hand for the wedding day. DO allot enough time for the wedding day appointment. If you will be going to a salon, block out two or more slots instead of one. This way the stylist does not overbook and will not feel rushed. Many brides opt to have stylists come to their homes. There may be an extra charge for this service, but it may be well worth the cost.

DON’T make any drastic changes to your appearance right before the wedding. This includes changing your hair color or texture, extreme tanning, using colored contact lenses, or chopping off all of your hair. It’s better to wait until after the wedding to change your style. DO bring a veil, headpiece, and any other accessories to your hair consult. This enables the stylist to practice working with these items. DON’T tweeze or wax brows too close to the start of the ceremony. Redness and swelling are common side effects of tweezing and waxing, and they can be difficult to mask with makeup. DO experiment with any products you haven’t used before to test for allergic reactions and see how well they wear. DON’T wash or condition hair the day of the wedding. Intricate styles tend to stay better when hair has a little grip. “Dirty” hair is easier to work with than shiny, freshly washed locks. Chances are more photographs will be taken of a newlywed couple than at any other moment in their lives. Certain beauty dos and don’ts should be followed so couples put their best faces forward.

Variety is the spice of life with wedding cuisine Weddings are a celebration wherein guests look forward to the reception as much as the actual ceremony. The food served at the reception is often hotly anticipated. Wedding receptions feature a bevy of different foods to tempt the palates of those in attendance. From appetizers served during the cocktail hour to the last crumb of cake, food plays a big role in a wedding reception. As much as budget allows, give guests the choice over what they dine on. During the cocktail hour, play with many different tastes and offerings. For those who want to be creative, this is the time to do so. Exotic flavors can be served alongside more traditional offerings that guests will recognize. During the main course of the meal, give guests a few options. Most catering facilities will offer suggestions in their meal packages. Couples can typically choose to offer a meat, poultry, or seafood dish. This caters to a wide variety of diners. It is important for couples to recognize that many people have food allergies or are on restricted diets. While it may not be possible to provide for everyone’s specific requirements, it is possible to make some accommodations. Ask the catering manager how his company

provides for guests who have specific dietary needs, or are vegetarians or vegans. Environmentally conscious couples can choose to serve organic foods and look to catering facilities that purchase foods from local vendors and farms. Some caterers will be happy to make the change, but it will likely affect the cost of the wedding package to do so. Food is an important factor at a wedding and it is in a couple’s best interest to ensure that the food served is tasty, full of variety and acceptable to the majority of the guests who will be attending the reception.
