A decade on from when they took their last exams, tossed their caps in the air, and said their goodbyes, the BCIS Class of 2014 reconvened for a special ten-year reunion in April of 2024. Through flickering little squares on a screen, we caught up with 19 of our alumni on an online video call, spanning half a dozen time zones and four different continents – the U.K., Canada, Spain, South Korea, Germany, Australia, Israel, France, the U.S.A, Beijing and Shanghai were all represented in this grand gettogether. The cohort were greeted by our Alumni Relations Team, long-serving BCIS members of staff Dave Nguyen, Darren Skov, and Julie Lawton, as well as Secondary School Principal Natalie Harvey and Head of School Tom Egerton, all convening to reminisce and bridge the past and the present.

The first few minutes of awkward chatter quickly subsided once all 19 alumni showed up, warming up as one familiar voice after another joined the call, sharing stories from the past, old friends unlocking memories once lost to time, and updating one another on the journeys and paths they’ve taken over the past ten years. This is the BCIS Class of 2014 Alumni Newsletter; join us in uncovering their stories!

From the World to BCIS

Finding their paths crossing once again ten years on, Dani, Noam, and Claudia, hailing from Italy, Israel, and Spain respectively, have each taken their own unique paths in the decade following their high school graduation – but first, let’s get to know their stories leading up to this point.

Dani’s BCIS story began when his father, who was working for an Italian machinery company requiring frequent business trips to China, opened an office in Beijing, leading the Piombo family to settle in the capital during Dani’s middle school years, where he and his little sister then became part of the Warrior family. After graduating from high school, his next step remained in these borders, opting to stay in China and attend university in Ningbo. Upon the completion of his studies, he remained in the Zhejiang city for work, following in his father’s footsteps by entering the business of importing various Italian industrial equipment and machine parts, as well as providing related services like assembly and testing. Equipped with an engineering degree, Dani mainly handles equipment commissioning, installation, and operation, as well as liaising with factory engineers.

Noam, in true ‘global citizen’ fashion, grew up outside the country of her birth, spending her first seven years in Cyprus, before relocating to Beijing with her family. This move was somewhat of a shock to the system for Noam, citing the differences in climate and culture between Beijing and Cyprus. After four years spent in the Chinese capital, Noam and her family returned to Israel, relocating to a central city close to Haifa, where she completed her high school study. As part of her compulsory military service, Noam took up a role as a social worker to care for volunteer soldiers living in a kibbutz. The night following our interview, Noam and her family were safely evacuated as conflict in the region broke out once again. Noam is now pursuing a master's degree in rehabilitation psychology.

Growing up, Claudia and her family spent their time their home nation of Spain, before moving to China, where her and her brother then joined BCIS. Having grown up speaking primarily Spanish, all classes being taught in English initially proved to be a thorn in Claudia’s side, with her lack of confidence in mathematics only adding insult to injury. However, by the time she left BCIS, with the help of her teachers, Claudia was not only fluent in English but also fell in love with Chinese and Chinese culture. She majored in Environmental Engineering in college and, after graduation, worked at a European consulting company. Claudia is someone who excels at multilingual and cross-cultural communication, and not only handled engineering-related tasks but also took on many cross-national project coordination duties. She recently joined KPMG, where her bilingual abilities, international education and varied work experience have made her a perfect fit for a large multinational company.

Once everyone’s high school stories had come to an end, each of our spotlighted alumni embarked on their own life journeys; pursuing professional and career goals passionately, meeting their life partners and starting families, and much more. Whether they stayed in China or returned to their home countries, they carried with them their own deeply meaningful China stories, setting out anew to continually explore all the wants, needs, feelings of belonging, and aspirations that lie ahead.

Class of 2014

If there was one word you could associate with Dani during his time at BCIS, one common thread that stretched across his happiest memories at the school, it would be ‘basketball’. The allure of the hallowed school court was too much for Dani to resist in April of 2024, as a longawaited reunion pick-up game with teachers and former teammates marked a special get-together ten years in the making. It was almost like they had never left, Dani said, as every Friday the high school basketball team, unsatiated by the grueling two hours of after-school training, would continue balling out at the weekly BCIS community games, fueled by a youthful zeal, facing staff and parents in an often more physical and competitive encounter. Coming home and falling asleep immediately after the Friday basketball-marathons always marked the end of a satisfying, fulfilled week at school for Dani. Beyond this, he cited the inter-school ACAMIS tournaments held all over the country as highlights of his high school experience as well, forming irreplaceable bonds and creating unrivaled memories with BCISer and non-BCISers alike. Dani, despite being a self-admitted mischievous child, takes with him a number of valuable lessons from his time at BCIS; the international culture, the diversity, and the sheer volume of academic and extracurricular opportunities all shaped him into the open-minded person he is today.

His valuable IB diploma exempted him from the first year of his university courses in Ningbo, and almost as an additional and fatalistic reward for completing the demanding two-year DP, this course is where he met his girlfriend, now wife. This year they moved to Rouen, France, with a puppy and a sense of adventure, as they start a new chapter in their lives in Europe. His wife has a position at a university in Rouen, while Dani is studying for a master's degree in mechanical engineering at a business school in the area. Having gone from Italy to Beijing, Beijing to Ningbo, and now Ningbo to Rouen, Dani is no stranger to relocating and starting anew, however there always remains some degree of reluctance. ‘Home’ is a complex concept for him: Italy represented youth and leisure, China marked growth and development, while France is a symbol of the future and ambition.

Upon their arrival in France, the sadness that remained from parting ways with their home of over many years was quickly overshadowed by excitement and enthusiasm for the culture, architecture, and lifestyle of their new home. "Born in one country, raised in another—this experience made me realize that life is about accepting constant change and integration,” Dani remarked. “Friends come and go, and through this process, you also meet many new people; it's important to embrace this uncertainty with positivity.”

Noam

Entering a new environment can be an intense experience, but somewhere between excitement and unease, Noam found that her first sight of Beijing’s winter was something that provoked a striking feeling in her — the image of frozen lakes and sheets of white covering the school field was something she had never seen before, and remains a formative memory of hers.

Joining BCIS in the 7th grade, Noam did not find the transition and integration into a new school particularly difficult, having transferred schools multiple times during her 13 years at that point. However, it was moving back to Israel which proved to be the biggest challenge for a 16-year-old Noam, whose native language was English. She had to start learning Hebrew systematically at the local high school, and initially found it difficult to make friends, however despite these experiences, Noam believed that settling back in Israel was the right decision, as it is a crucial part of her personal identity which was, up until that point, as of yet properly explored. With her parents growing up in Israel and her abroad, this gap in experiences and identity between them is something Noam looked to bridge, hoping to build her own family there in the future.

In 9th grade at BCIS, Noam attended a university fair hosted at the school, and after seeing the diverse courses and universities on offer, she decided then that she did want to continue her studies at the tertiary level. In Israel, all young people are required to serve in the military after high school, and only after completing this service can they decide whether to continue their education, with most of those who do choose to go to university starting around the age of 23. During her military service, Noam found her passion for communication and service; she was a social worker who mainly took care of volunteer soldiers whom she shared a faith with, coming from all over the world, providing them with comprehensive assistance in a kibbutz, a type of communal, agricultural settlement unique to Israel.

Staying true to her passion for service, Noam is pursuing a degree in rehabilitative psychology. During an internship, Noam had the opportunity to come face to face with patients who had experienced major trauma, as she highlighted to us the importance of, and emphasis needed on, psychological rehabilitation. The people Noam encountered were at the lowest points in their lives, urgently needing help to overcome their grief and trauma, aiming to establish a life less burdened by anguish. This experience strengthened Noam's belief that, despite its challenges, this field of study and profession is essential, especially in a region prone to experiencing conflict. Considering the special nature of this occupation, Noam knows that life and work will inevitably intersect, but it is important to learn how not to let it affect her personal happiness; after all, only by feeling warmth and happiness in the first place can one continue to move forward and have the strength and ability to help others.

Claudia

Claudia

On her return to Spain, there was still a feeling of unfinished business between Claudia and China. As her university years in her home country were coming to an end, fueled by her goal of rekindling her Chinese connection, Claudia participated in an exchange program at Tongji University in Shanghai. Wanting to master the language in a fluent and authentic manner became a mission for Claudia since she had left, and this was a chance to make some serious progress. Some might say be careful what you wish for, though; Claudia had applied to the Environmental Engineering courses in the English-language stream, however by some twist of fate, an administrative error meant that she was put in the Chinese-language section. Her, at the time, limited Chinese abilities were pushed to their limits, as she tackled the technical language and high-concept ideas with a gung-ho attitude, but ended up leaving the course with a new language acquired, new friends gained, and new memories made.

Despite her busy work schedule, Claudia still finds the time to diligently practice Chinese on Duolingo for at least three minutes every day. If one had any doubt Claudia was a product of an international education, one would just need to look at her speech at her brother’s wedding. Her brother Daniel and sister-in-law Christine (both also BCIS alumni!) were gifted with a trilingual MC, as Claudia delivered spoke in Spanish, English, and Chinese to ensure the ceremony was understood and accessible to the cosmopolitan crowd. Studying and living in China transformed Claudia's mindset and broadened her horizons, experiencing the rapid development of the country and the opportunities brought by these changes. In contrast, in Spain, she describes most people at work as disliking change, whereas Claudia is very willing to take on projects full of unknowns and challenges, volunteering and taking a leading role whenever such opportunities arise.

"I always seek diverse cultural experiences and enjoy collaborating with people from different nationalities and backgrounds," Claudia remarked. "Growing up in an international environment has made me more empathetic in my interactions. I can more easily grasp the cultural influences behind certain actions, especially when clients require tailored, culturally specific sustainable environmental plans."

At work recently, Claudia has been instrumental in solving a number of problems international clients have faced with data gathering and presentation, building a visual business dashboard for tracking one’s ‘water footprint’. It is professional wins like these which show the value of her choice of major, as well as reflect the type of leadership skills and confidence developed in international schools. Claudia, inspired by the magnificence of nature from an early age, had always hoped to contribute to its preservation, and is doing so with similarly big-picture and globally minded people. Claudia’s China story is far from complete – she is getting married next summer, and the couple are planning a return to the Middle Kingdom, with new perspectives and experiences, however always driven by the same desire to make connecting cultural bridges a core part of her identity.

From BCIS to the World

Like countless Chinese students dreaming of furthering their education in the United States, Gary and Sunny both set sail from the BCIS community ten years ago in pursuit of an elite educational experience in a new and ofthyped world, exploring a new environment and broadening their horizons.

Sunny

Sunny was well acquainted with the international school system before joining BCIS, having attended various across Beijing beforehand, always with the goal of studying at university abroad. A full scholarship offer at BCIS marked the start of her journey as a Warrior, quickly integrating into the highly multicultural student population. The University of California, Berkeley was her next destination after graduation, and upon completion of her undergraduate degree, the dilemma between more education or entering work arose in her life, eventually deciding on the latter. Hong Kong was calling, and as one of the global financial centers of the world, it was an attractive destination for recent graduates. Working in high-rise office buildings in a bustling and fast-paced environment became part of Sunny's daily life. Currently, Sunny works at a private equity firm in Shanghai, and although she remains busy, her life has found a more balanced pace.

Gary’s desire to move to the United States came from his experiences in public school; having always wanted to express himself in and out of the classroom, it seemed tertiary education abroad was the way to go. Gary attended three different high schools throughout his late teens: one year in Shenyang, a second year in the United States, and a third and final graduating year from BCIS. With public school courses, AP courses, and IB courses all under his belt, Gary had to circumnavigate a complex web of logistic obstacles when applying for universities, needing to submit three types of transcripts and reports. Admissions officers even had to email him to inquire about his specific situation, understanding the reasons for transferring and the grading standards of different curricula. On his return to China, the choice of BCIS was made without hesitation, helped in no small part due to its location, avoiding the hours-long travel to Shunyi and back as would be the case with most other options. The IB curriculum suited Gary well, allowing him to explore his interests and strengths through its projectfocused delivery and its comprehensive six-subjects + EE and CAS model. After high school, Gary returned to Boston for college and later pursued a master's degree in sports management at Columbia University in New York, staying in the United States to work upon graduation. Now, he has returned to Beijing and works as the social media manager for NBA China.

Sunny

Picturing what your life might look like as a grown-up is something all kids engage in; some may have decided on their dream job early on, while others find their calling further along their path. Life is about actively facing choices time and time again, and in this process, one becomes closer to nailing down what directions they want to go in.

Sunny chose to attend university in bright, sunny California, a place that matched her not just her name but also her disposition. The University of California, Berkeley is located in the world's tech startup hub— Silicon Valley —a place brimming with innovation, an entrepreneurial spirit, and opportunities, making it a land of hope in Sunny's eyes. At university, she often found that, compared to her peers, as an IB student, writing papers was not a particularly arduous task, hinting at the effectiveness of the IB’s more concept-based learning methods, as opposed to an emphasis on test preparation. Sunny majored in both Biology and Economics, before continuing her journey of academic and professional exploration through her following internship experiences.

Having experiences interning both in labs and offices, covering both of her fields of expertise, Sunny had come to the disappointing realization the medical profession she once longed for was far different from her original expectations. In reality, she found that most doctors work independently, contrasting sharply with Sunny’s affinity for social interaction and teamwork. So, it became apparent that going down the route of her other major, Economics, much more strongly aligned with Sunny's ideal model of a workplace and work culture. With graduation from university looming, Sunny had a decision to make: would she further her studies and get a master’s degree like most of her peers, or would she take the leap into entering the workforce? The circumstances at the time – an exciting job offer at the right place and right time – nudged her towards making the choice to leave academia, at least for now. Looking back, Sunny is grateful and relieved to have made this decision at the time she did, for if she pursued further studies, she would have had to find a job in this field just as the world began to experience the economic shock following a massive global pandemic. "It is crucial to seize opportunities as they arise,” she said.

Although Sunny received job offers in the finance departments of several tech companies in the U.S., the nature of investment banking fit her ambitious spirit far more. After taking up an offer in Hong Kong and working there for three years, Shanghai marked the next step in Sunny’s journey, this time swapping investment banking for private equity. In the investment industry, her bilingual skills in Chinese and English are essential, smoothly facilitating international interactions and deals. Her degree in economics is obviously essential, however her background in biology certainly did not go to waste; many of the investment projects she follows are related to health and medicine, and her solid foundation in biology allows her to quickly grasp the key points. What excites Sunny most about her work is dealing with different companies and investment projects, highlighting the dynamic nature of private equity, rather than monotonously completing the same tasks repeatedly. In spite of the countless calls and meetings every day or the innumerable reviews of business plans of potential investment companies, following different industries, companies, and projects and achieving her goals in her work life is what energizes Sunny.

Gary

Growing up as an NBA fanatic, Gary, like most young basketball fans, had a dream that one day, he might in some way be involved with the professional game. In Gary’s case, the dream of holding a microphone and reporting games live to millions of people around the world is the dream that would, like Yao Ming stood in a crowd, rise above everything else. Unlike Sunny’s zigzagged journey to attaining professional contentment, Gary's job at NBA China is almost exactly like what he envisioned. Although not a sports journalist in the traditional sense of the word, as part of his work Gary often travels to watch games live and frequently interacts with the stars of the game up close.

Gary's professional connections with the NBA date back to 2019 when he had the opportunity to intern at the NBA China office in Shanghai, before returning to the U.S. and working for the Brooklyn Nets. After earning his master's degree, Gary worked in the NBA’s digital marketing department in New Jersey. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and work visa issues, Gary was transferred back to Beijing, but still as an employee of the NBA, where he worked his way up to the role of social media manager of NBA China. Basketball is a global game, but as its center lies firmly in the U.S., Gary’s cross-cultural experience and expertise is crucial in bringing the game to one of its most diehard fanbases. As the manager of NBA China's social media department, Gary holds weekly meetings with the media and content teams at the U.S. headquarters and across the world, leading his team to create 'glocalized’ content while staying aligned with the overall strategy of the company.

In May of this year, Gary returned to BCIS and spoke at the high school sports awards dinner ceremony, causing audible gasps to come from the young athletes in the audience as he recalled meeting one superstar after another, creating a tangible link between BCIS and what many students may see as a pie in the sky dream.

'Happiness’, in this strange time between youthful idealism and senior wisdom, probably comes from a combination of a few things; being able to find joy and pride in your work, being able to hold on to the childlike spark which once shaped your dreams, and being able to confidently and ambitiously seize opportunities for growth and development, wherever they may present themselves.

Gary grabbed these opportunities with both hands –from an enjoyer and consumer of sport, he found his way to the other side of the curtain, and reaping all the professional and personal rewards that come with it. Gary’s parents, his ‘backboard’, provided endless support, for which Gary is very grateful, encouraging him to pursue what might seem to some as an improbable goal. Throughout his journey, he cites them not only as providing him with ample freedom of choice but also being patient listeners and helping him analyze the possibilities outcomes of each choice whenever he faced important decisions. It is now Gary’s turn to play mentor, as he encourages younger students to dream big and work hard, just as he did, until their dreams become reality.

Sunny Gary

Sunny has found her place – enjoying her current industry and will continue to work in investment-related roles, but also with plans to explore new positions as she sees fit. Recently, Sunny was selected as the youngest board member of a NASDAQ-listed company in the health industry — a company she had invested in until its successful IPO. Her tenacity and relentlessness in her field of work has opened so many doors for her in her career, as she continues to accumulate business experience with each new opportunity, each new investment, and each new interaction. Access to entrepreneurs with unique talents, charisma, and profound industry insights means that there is no end to what possibilities await Sunny in her future, as with her innate ability to communicate between all types of people in two languages and utilize her broad skillset, the world really is her oyster. Sunny faced all types of uncertainty and doubt throughout her academic experience at university, but she faced it by taking fearless risks, accepting that one's original and ideal step-by-step plan might not always bear fruit –and that’s okay. Sunny’s story can be summed up with a quote from the wise (and sometimes mischievous) Dani; "Life is about accepting constant change and integration... it’s important to embrace this uncertainty with positivity.”

In the four years since its establishment, the BCIS Alumni Network has seen rapid development, successfully planning and hosting numerous alumni events in its relatively short (and pandemicaffected) history. Reunions have been held in Beijing, New York, Shenzhen, and Melbourne, showing the breadth of our Warrior web, as we facilitate the opportunities to make valuable professional and personal connections across the 19-year-old BCIS community. As a valuable learning resource for the current BCIS community, the BCIS Alumni Relations Team will continue to inject vitality into the school, support its long-term development, and for alumni, not just be a useful resource but also a home.

Once a BCISer, Always a BCISer.
