DECEMBER 2022

Our Mission

From the desk of The President

It is hard to believe we are about to complete the first semester of this school year. It wasn’t too long ago that we welcomed 1,148 students back into the building. The energy and enthusiasm in the school has been refreshing as our students continue to learn, grow, and enjoy all that Bishop Carroll Catholic High School has to offer.

Bishop Carroll Catholic High School is built on Catholic fellowship and intellectual rigor, our programs in academics, athletics, faith and service, and the arts provide unlimited opportunities for student success. Bishop Carroll Catholic High School is a place where tradition and innovation meet, and it is a goal of our school community to continue to provide a cutting edge, Christ-centered education for our students. This is evident through our academies and partnership with WSU Tech.

Bishop Carroll’s primary mission is to provide opportunities to strengthen the faith of our students. Catechesis, evangelization, and service are key components of our mission to educate in a Christ-centered environment. We work to insure our students are taught the faith and given opportunities to also live the faith in order for it to become a key part of their identity. Students are provided daily opportunities for prayer, religion curriculum, service work, and participation in the sacraments including daily Mass and confession. This is evident through our increased seminarian and religious vocations discernment from our alumni.

Bishop Carroll Catholic High School provides many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities. From interscholastic sports for boys and girls, many clubs and fine arts opportunities are available. We are proud to have successful programs where students can grow and evolve as well rounded individuals. These programs are great opportunities to engage students in their high school experience, make life-long friendships with their classmates, and develop their abilities to work with others in their future vocation.

In this issue you will find our report of all those who gave to the 2021-2022 Annual Fund. We are tremendously grateful and blessed to have exceeded our goal for this past year. As the cost to educate our students continues to increase it is of the essence that we continue to work together and support the Bishop Carroll Fund. Thank you for your prayers and continued loyal support to Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.

We love hearing about what our alums are doing. Thank you and God bless! Stay

Grace (Buessing)

Biby 2017 Grace came back to Bishop Carroll because of the Catholic faith present at Carroll. She loved getting to share values and morals with her teachers as a student and excited to get to share those same experiences with her students. One of her favorite high school memories was hearing everyone sing "Humble Thy Self" at all school Mass. "It was loud and beautiful!"

Alexander Boschert

2016 Alex returns to Bishop Carroll reflecting on all the good memories and the great teachers he had when he was a student. The main reason for his return is the values and dedication to the Catholic faith which is hard to find anywhere else. One of his best memories was eating lunch in Boo’s classroom all senior year.

Jackie (Breer) Foltz

1984 Jackie feels like she has returned home. Many of her core values come from her catholic education. "The first time I attended Mass at BC this year was breathtaking. Being able to attend Mass during school is truly a blessing." As a student at BC Jackie remembers Sr. Giovanni's "rhetorical question", cheering, attending events, and how each teacher cared about the students.

Nathan Hampton 2008 Nathan Hampton returns to Bishop Carroll because as a student, Bishop Carroll was always a family first environment. He left the corporate world to be able to spend more time with his family and be a part of a family first culture. One of his favorite memories of being a student was the groundbreaking ceremony for the addition to the school and Activities Complex.

Chris Jaax 2001 Chis is a returning to BC because Bishop Carroll is a great school. "The Catholic culture that is present in the halls not only develops the students into disciples of Christ, but also me as a teacher. It is a great place to be a part of and also makes me a better person." Chris’s favorite memory was beating Liberal and qualifying for the state playoffs. "I remember scoring the last touchdown of the game and the crazy coach being upset."

Sarah Kotrba 2015

Sarah returns to Bishop Carroll serving the community that laid the foundation for her own formation and where she first encountered Christ. Her favorite memory from high school was when Sr. Mary Faustina assigned going to holy hours outside of school time as homework. Weird that a homework assignment was her favorite memory but she developed lifelong friends that would form a group called Adoration Fridays.

2018 "Ultimately, the Lord and His will has brought me back to Bishop Carroll." Grace is excited for the opportunity to minister to students who she can very easily relate. Her favorite memory from high school is the time in choir and theatre! She also remembers the love of the teachers and the help they provided during her hardest days; giving grace when she needed it most, and lending a listening ear when she was stressed. BC is a special place!

1984 Sherry found it exciting to return to her alma mater and teach something she loves, English. One of her favorite memories from high school was celebrating with her classmates David Chadd and Tim Higgins at junior/senior prom.

Ashley is excited to be back with family sharing the hallway with a multitude of nieces and nephews. Her favorite memories include dances, sporting events, and pep rallies. Some more specific ones include Mr. Ebright’s government class where she learned how to get out of speeding tickets along with meeting one of her best friends in Mr. Nielsen’s biology class.

Olivia Robben 2017 What brought her back to BC was the people, the teachers and administrators who had done so much for her. She wanted to give back to students what she had received. "Bishop Carroll has always been home to me. My favorite memory is when my brother won the State Football Championship his senior year. As a student, I was blessed with the best classmates during my four years of high school creating lifelong relationships."

Dear

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER

Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Bishop Carroll,

“Lord, Increase Our Faith”

As you all know, Bishop Carroll is different from other high schools, the mission of our institution is more than just merely education, we’re about assisting parents in helping to form the whole person after the image of Jesus Christ himself so as to enliven and transform the culture as grateful stewards of God’s gifts. This mission all begins with faith! Around a year ago one of my more bold and inquisitive students asked me bluntly, “Father, why should I believe in the faith, why does it matter if I believe in Jesus Christ?” I was struck by the sincerity and honesty of the question, and the last thing that I wanted to do in that moment was to put forward a meaningless platitude. I answered the student by speaking from my personal experience, that I believe in the Catholic faith because I believe that it is true and that it is from that most fundamental of truths that I have hope!

Faith most fundamentally is a different way of looking at the world, namely, that all of reality has been transformed because of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. At my best, I see everything, and I mean everything, through that most fundamental lens! The great Christian apologist C.S. Lewis articulated this very idea when he said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” In other words, faith was such a part of Lewis’ life that once he had encountered the reasonableness of the faith that lead to his conversion it transformed the way that he saw everything else in the world. That is what we are trying to do here at Bishop Carroll, to see all of our subjects, whether it be history, science, or literature through the lens of the resurrection. If our Catholic faith is true, then the resurrection is the ultimate reality, and that is the way that we need to educate our students.

I have seen the transforming power of faith in my own life. In fact, when I have “faith the size of a mustard seed” to quote our Lord, it is then that I find the most hope and joy in my life. I have found that when I see the world through this lens of faith that I am the best priest, teacher, and preacher I can be. It is on those days that I can approach the combative or apathetic student with sincere hope because I know that resurrection has redeemed this seemingly “hopeless” situation. I have found that I am more attractive on those days as well, because the students see a change in me, a change that I am not responsible for, but rather that I have been transformed by the grace of our resurrected Lord. Every day in my morning prayer I conclude my holy hour by begging the Holy Spirit to make the resurrection a palpable reality in my life, not an abstract thought or philosophical inquiry, but a lived experience that transforms me now!

Friends, may we Catholics echo the great plea of the Apostles, “Lord, increase our faith!” When we have faith, even if it’s as small as a mustard seed, it is then that we can be disciples who transform the culture as stewards of God’s gifts, what we here at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School are all about. We do that by the naturally attractive witness of our lives, that we are men and women who have been redeemed by the resurrection of the Incarnate Son of God. When our faith instructs us in that fundamental truth, how can we not be filled with joy and hope… who isn’t attracted to that?

God bless!

With father ed Herzog
