Who is your Superhero? At BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the Child & Family Research Institute we have tens of thousands to choose from. Every day, our young patients, their families, our staff members and donors show qualities – bravery, strength and compassion – that make them Superheroes. BC’s kids place their trust in us every day and it’s our duty, and privilege, to honour that trust. Thank you for being a Superhero.

Paige Roper

Twelve-year-old Paige Roper has an inoperable and rare form of brain cancer. The tumour caused her to have seizures and she was quickly placed on chemotherapy treatments at BC Children’s Hospital. She also had a drainage shunt inserted to relieve the build-up of fluid in her head. Although Paige has had countless blood tests, MRIs, and kidney tests, her spirit never fails her. An aspiring actress and singer, Paige brings a smile to everyone she meets, and uses her voice and wisdom to help bring hope.

BC Children’s Hospital serves over 1,000,000 kids – more than any other hospital in Canada!

John Janowicz

When John was just three months old, his kidneys were found to be in full failure. Diagnosed with Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, a metabolic disorder, John had trouble chewing and swallowing, and he is unable to sit up or walk on his own. Thanks to support from his family and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, John gets around independently with a customized wheelchair, and participates actively in family and school activities like any 11-year-old boy should. John was our 2007-08 Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child.

Felix Harries is a fighter. He has gone through many neurosurgeries in his young life, his first when he was just 10 days old. After doctors recognized that it took more than a shunt to drain the build-up of excess fluid in his head, they removed two areas of his brain – the left and right choroid plexus – to avoid skull deformities and brain damage. Felix recovered extremely well from his surgeries and his parents are grateful that their little boy is finally thriving like a typical one-year-old.

BC Children’s Hospital treats an average of 600 sick and injured children every day! Troy Weatherly

Looking at Troy Weatherly now, it is hard to imagine the active 10-year-old was at risk of being paralyzed and unable to speak for the rest of his life. When Troy was two years old, he was struck by a car and thrown over 12 metres. Although surviving the impact was a miracle in itself, Troy sustained a fractured spine and a severe head injury. His injuries caused him to undergo two neurosurgeries at Children’s Hospital, constant monitoring in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for weeks, and a long rehabilitative process at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. Troy does not remember much of those days now, as he is busy skiing, playing golf and practicing his karate skills.

Report of the President and Chair

For several years we have been working quietly to build awareness of the need for a new BC Children’s Hospital. At the same time, we have been quite vocal about the high calibre of care provided to BC’s kids by the staff at the Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, and about the importance and potential of the research undertaken at the Child & Family Research Institute – all of which are supported by our Foundation and you, our donors. In February, as our 2007-08 fiscal year drew to a close, the Government of British Columbia announced in the Throne Speech that it shared our view that a new Hospital for BC’s kids is a priority. In April 2008, Premier Gordon Campbell joined us at the Hospital as we launched the $200-million Campaign for BC Children, lending his voice and his government’s support to the cause. Since then, with the help of Global BC and partners around the province, we have been taking our message to British Columbians as we ask them to be Superheroes for BC’s kids. Superheroes are responding. Teck Cominco Limited quickly stepped in with the largest contribution in the Hospital’s history – a gift of $25 million to the campaign – and many others are stepping forward to help. 9

Of course, the opening of the new Hospital and the relocation of Sunny Hill’s services to the Hospital site are still a few years away. The Campaign for BC Children is building a bridge to the future. In the meantime, there are still children to care for – more than 72,000 BC kids a year – and knowledge to be gained through research. This is where your support is invaluable. In 2007-08 we received donations from 103,435 people from all over BC. Thanks to their support, and that of our corporate partners, we were able to provide $40.2 million to the Hospital, Sunny Hill and the Research Institute. This annual contribution ensures that BC’s kids receive excellent, rather than adequate, care at our facilities, and that our researchers can forge ahead in search of better treatments and cures. Once again, we received the support of thousands of volunteers. They breathe life into the many events we hold throughout the year, including the 2007 Miracle Weekend, which raised $14.7 million – once again setting a record. As we move forward with our campaign, we do so with the confidence that British Columbians will help us meet the medical needs of children today and in the future. The early days of our campaign have shown us what we already know – that BC is full of Superheroes. Thank you for your support.

Message from the Campaign Chair

Annual reports typically reflect on a period of time passed – the year behind us. My focus, as Chair of the Campaign for BC Children, is firmly on the future. I am privileged to be working with Foundation staff and volunteer members of the Campaign Leadership Council and Superhero Council to ensure we raise the $200 million we need to support the construction of the new Hospital, the relocation of childhood development and rehabilitation services to the Hospital site, and the delivery of specialized medical care to children all over the province through Child Health BC. We’re off to a phenomenal start. Premier Gordon Campbell has confirmed the Government of British Columbia’s commitment. The Overwaitea Food Group and Teck Cominco Limited have made substantial lead gifts. International recording phenomenon Michael Bublé has joined us as campaign ambassador. And, Global BC stepped up to partner with the Foundation to enlist the community’s support. 11

A lot of hard work remains ahead of us. As the Provincial Health Services Authority and staff at BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children move forward with plans for the new building, we’ll be reaching out to individuals and corporations across the province. Our ultimate goal is for every man, woman and child in BC to embrace our campaign – and to make a Super-heroic effort to get involved. Children’s Hospital belongs to every one of us and we have the opportunity to make it truly world-class. The future belongs to our children and grandchildren. It is our responsibility to give them every possible opportunity in life, and there’s no greater gift than good health and the opportunities that come with it. Thank you for being a Superhero for BC’s kids.

The Campaign for BC Children

Building a new Hospital for BC’s children

The $200-million Campaign for BC Children will transform the delivery of medical care to children in BC. The largest child health-care fundraising initiative ever undertaken in this province, the campaign will support the construction of a new Children’s Hospital and the relocation of childhood rehabilitation and development services to the current site, as well as research programs and improved delivery of care to children across the province. We are asking all British Columbians to become Superheroes for BC’s kids. THE NEW HOSPITAL

A new Children’s Hospital will bring together the advanced technology, innovative spaces and skilled professionals needed to harness the full potential of pediatric medicine. The new building will be a state-of-the-art healing environment designed specifically for kids and will house the acute care components central to any hospital: Intensive Care, Emergency, Surgery, and Diagnostics & Imaging. 13

BC Children’s Hospital cares for over 1,100 children in its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit each year.

The acute care building in the new BC Children’s Hospital will be named for Teck Cominco Limited, which made a generous gift of $25 million toward this building. Naming opportunities, valued at $5 million each, still exist for the Emergency Department and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Diagnostics & Imaging and Surgical Suites can be named for $3 million. PICU staff care for children with the most severe illnesses and injuries. Limited bedside space for caregivers, family and equipment, and too few isolation rooms pose challenges in treating severely ill children. In the new PICU, children will benefit from the most sophisticated technologies and life-support systems, with their families at their bedside – all of which speed physical and mental recovery. PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (PICU)

The Emergency Department is among the highest profile components in any hospital. Currently, the ED at Children’s Hospital receives close to 40,000 visits annually – more than double its designed capacity. The new Emergency will facilitate the treatment of children suffering from everything from minor ailments to life-threatening conditions. Children will receive rapid diagnoses and treatments in a childfriendly environment equipped with advanced medical technology. EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT (ED)

We’re relocating services for children with developmental disabilities to the new Hospital.

Over 7,000 surgeries take place in our Operating Rooms each year. The newest ORs, on which ours will be modelled, are versatile spaces designed to accommodate larger surgical teams and the equipment required for complex and minimally invasive surgeries. The goal is less pain, less blood loss, and faster recoveries. SMART OPERATING ROOMS (OR)

Our Radiology Department does an average of 54,000 diagnostic imaging procedures each year. Hospital staff rely on sophisticated imaging equipment to inform their diagnoses and treatment decisions. In the new facility, children will benefit from speedier diagnoses thanks to rapid access to superior images.

RELOCATION OF CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT AND REHABILITATION SERVICES

Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children cares for kids with developmental disabilities. The challenges faced by these children, and their families, often differ greatly from those of children treated at BC Children’s Hospital alone. Even so, they often require the services of medical professionals and treatment facilities at both sites. 15

Moving Sunny Hill’s services and expertise to Children’s Hospital will make it easier for patients to receive care from a range of specialists. The relocation will streamline diagnosis and treatment; improve access to programs and technology-based therapies; minimize the burden of travel on kids and families; and enhance clinical and research collaborations. The naming opportunity for the new Childhood Development and Rehabilitation facility is valued at $20 million. There are also naming opportunities for areas such as schoolrooms, playrooms, research labs and building wings. CHILD HEALTH BC

Every year close to 50,000 children and their families travel from outside Vancouver to receive specialized care at BC Children’s Hospital. These journeys exact an emotional and financial toll – creating childcare and employment challenges and putting strain on the very fabric that holds families together. Child Health BC is helping establish and equip facilities for specialized pediatric care in regional hospitals and clinics; providing training in pediatric care and mentorship to health professionals across BC; and supporting specialist visits to the regions, ensuring that BC’s kids have access to high quality pediatric care, wherever they live in the province. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is raising $50 million for Child Health BC. Last year, Overwaitea Food Group became Child Health BC’s lead benefactor with a $20-million gift. Additional naming opportunities are available. 16

CHILD & FAMILY RESEARCH INSTITUTE EXPANSION

More than 300 researchers, trainees and clinician scientists work together at the Child & Family Research Institute and BC Children's Hospital to improve the health of BC's kids. A 10,890-square-metre expansion of the Institute, completed in 2008, provides an environment for scientists to find better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent childhood illnesses; enables our research programs to grow (without it we risked losing some of our best investigators); and provides essential space for the translation of research into cures and improved therapies for BC’s kids. Naming of the Child & Family Research Institute expansion is available for $20 million. Naming opportunities for the Centre for Molecular Medicine & Therapeutics, the Diabetes Lab, the Genetics Lab, and the Mental Health Lab are also available. 17

EXCELLENCE IN CHILD HEALTH FUND

$13,000,000

Allocated to the Excellence in Child Health Fund in 2007-08

Each year the Foundation provides $13 million to the areas of greatest need at BC Children’s Hospital and the Child & Family Research Institute through the Excellence in Child Health Fund. These undesignated contributions fund the essential services, research and advanced technology necessary to make leading pediatric care accessible to our province’s one million children. Equipment purchased in 2007-08 includes Alaris IV (intravenous) pumps, used to deliver fluids, medications and therapeutic drugs in exact doses to children; monitoring systems to track heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and vital signs, ensuring patient safety after procedures; a high-resolution digital ultrasound system and leading-edge software, enabling clinicians to more quickly and easily diagnose children; and two critical care ventilators that replaced 15-year-old models in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

SUNNY HILL HEALTH CENTRE FOR CHILDREN

$1,589,336

Allocated to Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children in 2007-08

For over 75 years, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children has served BC children and youth with disabilities. The childhood development and rehabilitation services at Sunny Hill are among the best in the world and are available to children in BC with conditions that affect their growth and development. In 2007-08, Sunny Hill had 8,660 visits from children from more than 200 communities in BC and the Yukon. Kids who come for care and rehabilitation at Sunny Hill have a wide range of conditions: from complex learning and behaviour needs, such as fetal alcohol syndrome and autism, to conditions affecting physical or motor development, such as cerebral palsy and spine

19

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation

Through an affiliation with the University of British Columbia, our child-health centres are BC’s principal pediatric medical training venues. In 2007-08, $720,000 went toward clinical fellowships to train subspecialists in Neurosciences, Orthopedics, Neuropsychology and Psychiatry, among other areas. Last year, $375,000 in funding went to the Safe Start injury prevention program and the Office of Pediatric Surgical Evaluation and Innovation (OPSEI). Safe Start educates parents and families about child safety and implements provincial child-safety programs, such as providing child car seats to needy families and a free car seat inspection service. OPSEI aims to establish and maintain a unique position for BC Children’s Hospital as a leader in the delivery of high quality pediatric surgical care, allowing our top surgeons to enhance their skills by learning leading-edge procedures. Excellence in Child Health also provides funding for innovative care and research through the Telethon Projects Competition, providing seed funding for projects that have no other funding sources.

deformities as a result of injuries. More than half of the visits are from children six years of age and younger. Sunny Hill received $1.59 million in 2007-08, including $121,900 raised by the 650 CISL Radiothon for Kids in June 2007. These funds support research, education, equipment, programs, leadership and the Child Development Evidence Centre. Some donor-funded projects included an automatic door opener for the Therapy Department, a landscaping project on the corner grounds of Kaslo Street and East 22nd Avenue, and the purchase of two amplification systems for the Hearing Loss Team. Many children receiving service at Sunny Hill also require medical care at BC Children’s Hospital. Relocating services to the Oak Street site will ease the burden on kids and families who have to travel between the two facilities, and will provide more opportunity for collaboration between clinical and research staff.

mechanisms of drug side effects, and the ethical oversight of cancer trials, among other topics, conducted by Drs. Paul Rogers, Mason Bond, David Dix, Rod Rassekh, and Chris Fryer. Dr. Poul Sorensen leads the Biology and Translational Research Committee of the COG, and Dr. Kirk Schultz leads the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) Consortium, the world’s largest pediatric BMT clinical trials network. Drs. Catherine Pallen and Sandra Dunn are investigating why cancer occurs and working toward new targeted treatments.

The Department of Oncology/Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplant saw over 900 patients in active treatment or follow-up care last year. Of those, 151 were newly diagnosed with cancer. The Hospital had more than 7,100 Oncology Clinic and 620 Hemophilia Clinic outpatient visits, with over 1,050 clinic visits from kids in longterm care.

Identification of a new tumour gene HACE1 by Dr. Sorensen’s group was published in the journal Nature Medicine.

A COG study led by Dr. Schultz found that children with a certain type of acute lymphoblastic leukemia who receive imatinib (Gleevec ®) with intensive chemotherapy had significant improvements in survival.

Advances in treatment are directly related to participation in clinical trials. Our program has over 500 children currently registered with the Children’s Oncology Group (COG). We provide international leadership for clinical trials in nutrition therapy, sarcomas, Wilm’s tumour,

A research team led by Dr. Schultz identified a combination of four key biomarkers – blood proteins – in children with chronic graft versus host disease, a discovery that could help doctors diagnose, treat and track the disease, and predict a patient’s response to treatment.

ACUTE CARE

$96,000

Cost to fund two critical care ventilators for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The Emergency Department (ED), Operating Room (OR), Imaging & Diagnostics, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) form the core of acute care at BC Children’s Hospital. Highly specialized staff in these areas care for BC’s critically ill and injured children. The ED receives close to 40,000 visits each year. In 2007-08, the ED acquired new monitoring systems used to observe children’s heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and other vital signs, at the bedside. Used throughout the Hospital, these machines improve safety and enhance caregivers’ ability to act quickly in life-threatening situations by providing consistent patient-specific information. Last year, our surgical teams performed 7,200 procedures in the OR. Our cardiac surgeons performed 139 open-heart surgeries; 65 per cent of them on patients under a year old. Chief of

CHILD HEALTH BC

$1,500,000

Committed by Child Health BC to build a pediatric ambulatory care unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital

BC’s kids live in a province larger than the states of Washington, Oregon and California combined. Each year, over 48,200 children and their families travel from outside the City of Vancouver to BC Children’s Hospital for care. Established in 2005, Child Health BC works with caregivers around the province, the Provincial Health Services Authority, the five health authorities and the Ministry of Health to ensure children all over BC have access to a consistent, high standard of pediatric care. Child Health BC is improving access to care and encouraging greater efficiency and collaboration among professionals and agencies involved in child health. The program will eventually have a presence in every region in BC – so children and families can receive the care they need closer to home.

A $20-million pledge from lead benefactor Overwaitea Food Group in January 2007 spurred the establishment of many projects. In August 2007, Child Health BC announced the construction of a pediatric ambulatory care unit to house diagnostic and treatment clinics in specialties such as gastroenterology, endocrinology, and neurology at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. In November 2007, Richmond Hospital opened a general pediatric clinic, an early childhood mental health program, and a primary care maternity clinic. Plans to expand the Northwest Public Health Audiology Program in Prince Rupert are also underway. In the summer of 2007, Child Health BC and BC Children’s Hospital Foundation commissioned a report on health issues for BC children aged 10 to 16. The results shed light on kids’ health concerns and are influencing policies at a provincial level as part of the Conversation on Child Health: a Youth Perspective. As part of Child Health BC’s Interprofessional Workshop Series, workshops on topics including childhood cancer, epilepsy, and shaken-baby syndrome provided a forum for knowledge-sharing among health-care professionals from across the province.

The Centre for Research in Childhood Diabetes (CRCD) conducts multidisciplinary research into type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Last year, CRCD head Dr. Bruce Verchere and geneticist Dr. Michael Hayden found high levels of cholesterol in the pancreas damage our ability to secrete insulin and may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes, illustrating the promise of collaboration. The fourth floor of the expanded research building is dedicated to diabetes research.

In 2007-08 BC Children’s Hospital Foundation provided $9.3 million to support clinical research, education, infrastructure and equipment, programs and researchers at the Child & Family Research Institute. Recent expansion of the Institute has opened the doors to several core centres where top investigators collaborate on research into childhood diseases to build knowledge and provide the latest treatments as soon as they are developed and approved.

On November 15, 2007, Dr. Hayden received the Prix Galien Canada (Research) 2007 award for his contribution to biopharmaceutical research.

Published March 7, 2008, in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, research shows too much meat and not enough fish may pose a risk to infant neurological development, an important discovery in developing dietary fat guidelines for expectant and new mothers.

The Centre for Understanding and Preventing Infection in Children (CUPIC) brings researchers together to address susceptibility to infection in early childhood, innate immunity and ways to prevent infection. Part of the Clinical Infections/ Vaccinology and Clinical Studies Cores, CUPIC will be located on the fifth floor of the new research complex.

A study led by Dr. Steven Miller, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in November 2007, reveals the brains of term infants with heart disease resemble those of premature newborns. This discovery was made possible through the use of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-compatible neonatal transport incubator funded by donors.

In January 2008, the Centre for International Child Health hired its first full-time director, Dr. Charles Larson.

The Cardiac Sciences training program at Children’s Hospital of Fudan University welcomed three new centres to the program.

A new multi-year program to train midwives and nurses, support Ugandan pediatric residents and medical students, develop family medicine and improve survival of the acutely ill at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, received initial funding to improve the health of children and mothers.

To date, 18 trainers from across Canada and other countries have been recruited to travel to Shanghai.

Report from the Finance Committee

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation continued its trend of revenue growth, reporting consolidated revenues of $60.7 million for the 2007-08 year. We continue to see growth in our major fundraising programs, with Miracle Weekend revenues of $14.7 million compared with $13 million in the previous fiscal year. Major gifts from individuals and corporations generated through personal solicitation increased to $18.5 million from $15.8 million, reflecting the Hospital’s strong ties to the community. With this success came a larger contribution from the Foundation to the Hospital, Sunny Hill and the Child & Family Research Institute. In 2007-08 we provided $40.2 million to these facilities, up from $37.5 million in the previous year. We added more to endowments than in previous years, directing $5.3 million into new or established endowment funds. In September 2007 we celebrated the completion of a major capital project that resulted in the creation of the Djavad Mowafaghian Wing. An additional recently completed donor-funded capital project is the playing field behind the new Mental Health Building. Further changes to the Hospital site will occur in the near future as we work with the Government of British Columbia and the Provincial Health Services Authority to support the construction of a new Hospital. As our $200-million Campaign for BC Children progresses, we continue to set aggressive annual fundraising goals independent of the campaign, ensuring we will continue to meet the Hospital’s urgent needs each year. If you would like more information about the Foundation’s fiscal activity or to receive our audited financial statements, please contact the Foundation at 604.875.2444 or visit us at www.bcchf.ca.

BEQUEST IN YOUR WILL

Ways of Giving There are many ways to make a gift to benefit BC’s kids. PUBLICLY TRADED SECURITIES

Donating securities is the most effective way to give. If you own publicly traded securities that have increased in value and you decide to sell them, 50 per cent of the capital gain is taxable. However, if you donate these securities “in kind” to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, no tax is payable on the capital gain. The resulting tax credit from the donation of the securities will reduce taxes payable on other income. Making a gift of publicly traded securities to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is easy to do. Please contact us for a transfer form to facilitate the process. FLOW-THROUGH SHARES

Publicly traded flow-through shares whose hold period has expired are an effective way to give. Flow-through shares – shares of Canadian mining, oil and gas companies – have unique tax incentives that, when combined with a charitable tax receipt, offer even bigger tax savings. LIFE INSURANCE

Giving life insurance is a way of making a gift without depleting your estate or depriving your loved ones of other assets. At the end of your lifetime, the gift of the policy proceeds will be paid by the insurance company directly to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Depending on how the policy is structured, you may receive a tax benefit during your lifetime or your estate will receive the benefit.

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation Donor Bill of Rights The Board of Directors of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is in place to ensure that donors: 1 are informed of our mission, of the way we intend to use donated resources, and of our capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes; 2 are informed of the identity of those serving on our governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities; 3 have access to our most recent financial statements; 4 are assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they are given;

-40

Ways of Giving and Donor Bill of Rights

A bequest is a direction in your will that a certain sum of money, a particular asset, or a portion of the estate is to be given to British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital Foundation (our legal name). RRSP/RRIF

You can name BC Children’s Hospital Foundation as the direct beneficiary of the proceeds of the RRSP or RRIF or you can make a gift to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation in your will. The resulting tax credit may be used to offset the tax payable on the redemption of the proceeds of the retirement plan. PLEDGES

Our pledge program offers you a convenient method for making contributions. The program allows you to spread your contribution over three to five years, usually commencing the year the pledge is made. You will receive full recognition for the value of your contribution as soon as the commitment is made. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is a registered Canadian charity and issues tax receipts for all donations. Tax credits generated by donations can offset tax otherwise payable on up to 75 per cent of your net income in the year of the gift. Any unused tax credits may be carried forward and used to offset taxes over the following five years. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation
