BC Children’s Hospital Foundation supports the people, places and things required to ensure BC’s kids have access to outstanding pediatric care. For 25 years, we have worked with children, families, caregivers and hundreds of thousands of British Columbians to give the Hospital, the Child & Family Research Institute and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children the resources they need to excel. Over the years we have witnessed much advancement – in treatment, research, access, technology, attitudes and philosophies – that has transformed pediatric care.You have participated in bringing about this change. Breathing easily is not something five-year-old Katrina McIvor can take for granted. She has cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition that causes, among other things, her lungs to become clogged with mucus. While researchers at BC Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital work hard to find a cure, Katrina and her two-year-old sister Kiarra, who also has cystic fibrosis, must take medication several times a day and have physiotherapy regularly to alleviate their symptoms.

BC Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital is responsible for a larger population of children than is any other hospital in Canada.The Hospital treats over 70,000 children, from infants to adolescents, each year.

In the five years since her birth, Jeevan Basra and her family have become closely acquainted with BC Children’s Hospital. Born with a life-threatening heart defect, Jeevan was first admitted when she was just 48 hours old, weak and struggling for breath. At six months she underwent heart surgery and a challenging recovery. Today, Jeevan still makes regular visits to Children’s to monitor her health challenges, likely related to a genetic condition. In 2006-07 Jeevan served as Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

In January 2007, six-year-old Colton Boechler, and likely thousands of other kids across Canada, caught the flu. In Colton’s case though, the virus attacked his heart, causing cardiac arrest.Then his lungs failed. Colton spent weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at BC Children’s Hospital, hooked up to a sophisticated piece of equipment that did for Colton what his own heart and lungs could not. Today, as Colton continues to recover at home, even doctors who are reluctant to use the term ‘miracle’ say it’s the best way to describe his survival.

CHRISTINA

In June 2001 Christina Basi experienced a strange numbness in her left hand and then her left foot. Within minutes, bleeding in her brain had left the energetic high school student paralyzed. Her treatment at Children’s, in the Emergency Department, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Neurology ward, saved her life. Although her plans to study nursing were stymied by a relapse – she still experiences some paralysis and impaired vision – Christina, now 22, remained true to her interest in health care and works for the Provincial Health Services Authority, a testament to willpower and the care provided at BC Children’s Hospital.

Over 67 per cent of children treated at BC Children’s Hospital come from outside the City of Vancouver.

BRUCE

Bruce Bryant is a natural comedian, but the cancer he fought in his first years of life was no laughing matter. At the age of two, Bruce was diagnosed with an aggressive liver cancer and tumours on his lungs. After undergoing chemotherapy using a new combination of drugs developed by researchers at Children’s, and rounds of surgery to remove the tumours and 70 per cent of his liver, Bruce beat the odds. Today, at age 11, Bruce has been cancerfree for nine years.

When two-year-old Colvin Wong celebrated his second birthday, and had not yet spoken his first word, his parents knew something was wrong. In January 2007, doctors at Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s confirmed that Colvin had severe to profound hearing loss in both ears.Today, Colvin wears hearing aids and is scheduled to undergo cochlear implant surgery at Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital shortly. His doctor is optimistic that Colvin will soon be better able to hear the voices of the people who love him.

Hundreds of thousands of children have received care at BC Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital and Sunny Hill. These buildings have served British Columbians well, but there is a limit to their ability to keep pace with the change that has re-shaped medicine. Today weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re supporting the expansion of the research building to facilitate discovery, the renovation of parts of the Hospital to address near-term needs, and the establishment of regional pediatric clinics. We are also looking ahead, anticipating the healing environment of tomorrow, and building support to provide for the next quarter century of pediatric care.

Here, where the nurse-to-patient ratio is one-to-one, health professionals care for the provinceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s critically ill children. Rosella works closely with families and staff to ensure continuity of care and information sharing as her nursing colleagues rotate through 12-hour shifts.

BC Children’s Hospital offers the province’s children an exceptionally high standard of pediatric care. Yet, because BC is a large province, families who live outside the Lower Mainland often face long, expensive and inconvenient journeys to Vancouver to receive care at Children’s Hospital. In January 2007, the Overwaitea Food Group announced a pledge of $20 million to Child Health BC, an initiative aimed at ensuring that all of BC’s children have access to excellent pediatric care in their own communities. This network of medical professionals and BC’s health authorities and agencies, is working to enhance or initiate the provision of specialized pediatric care in regions across the province. This includes supporting the construction or renovation of facilities, equipment purchases, and training and education of health professionals. Eventually, Child Health BC will have a physical presence in all of the regional health authorities and a still broader reach through its programs. In 2006-07, Child Health BC funded four prenatal cardio-respiratory monitors at Prince George Regional Hospital, facilitated and supported several gastrointestinal clinics for children and youth at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, facilitated the development of Emergency Department treatment guidelines for six common pediatric conditions, and hosted workshops dealing with Down syndrome, epilepsy and childhood cancer. 13

RESEARCH

Scientists at the Child & Family Research Institute are dedicated to understanding, preventing and curing diseases that affect children and families. Our researchers – who come from some of the world’s top centres and universities – are making discoveries in cancer, diabetes, genetics, infectious diseases, mental health and nutrition. The Research Institute has grown dramatically since its inception in 1995. In the past year alone, our studies of childhood illnesses have increased by 10 per cent. In 2006-07, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation provided more than $9 million to the Research Institute and its scientists, enabling them to dedicate more effort to research that benefits children worldwide. The Foundation continues to rally the community to raise $22.5 million to support a 10,890-square-metre Research Institute expansion currently underway. Scheduled for completion in late 2007, the expansion will attract and retain more first-class scientists by providing the space and resources needed to discover improved treatments and ultimately cures for diseases that affect children and families.

Dr. David Speert was awarded $3,226,617 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation for our Centre for Understanding and Preventing Infection in Children, focusing on global childhood infectious diseases. Dr.Michael Hayden and Dr.Bruce Verchere discovered that high levels of cholesterol in the pancreatic beta cells damage the body’s ability to secrete insulin, which is likely to contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes.This discovery provides hope for the prevention of diabetes. In February 2007, the For Children We Care Dinner contributed over $538,000 toward a $15-million Centre for Molecular Medicine & Therapeutics Endowment. 14

On January 29, 2007 the new Mental Health Building at Children’s Hospital officially opened its doors. This new facility is improving access to world-class care for approximately 140,000 children and adolescents with mental health conditions in BC. With all of our mental health programs under one roof, we are now able to expand programs and services, giving kids more dedicated time with caregivers and an enhanced quality of care. Our research capacity has increased, enabling us to translate research findings into improved treatments. A dedicated Telepsychiatry room, the Kelty Knowledge Centre, will allow us to provide direct service to children and families across the province, strengthening partnerships and teamwork among caregivers in the assessment and rehabilitation of children and youth with brain and behaviour disorders. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation raised $6 million toward the construction of the new Mental Health Building. This goal was reached thanks to the incredible generosity of the community. Supporters for the new facility included the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation, Paul and Mary Goh, Auxiliary to BC Children’s Hospital, Great West Life, Canucks for Kids Fund, Hank Ketcham and Jake and Judy Kerr. Additional support came from fundraising events in 2006:

SUNNY HILL CENTRE FOR CHILDREN

BC kids made 9,706 visits to Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children last year for conditions ranging from accidental injuries and genetic disorders to bone or spine deformities and behavioural conditions. These children are treated by some of the best developmental specialists in the world, all of whom are dedicated to making life better for kids with disabilities and chronic health conditions. Health care for kids with disabilities has changed dramatically in the 75 years that Sunny Hill has been caring for children. Today, we can identify health challenges earlier and begin treatment sooner. Many children now receive treatment as day patients, or are treated in their home communities, and few are admitted for long stays. Sunny Hillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s focus is on ability, rather than disability, and services are geared toward helping each child reach his or her full potential. This can mean helping children learn or re-learn to walk or talk, or ensuring they have the right wheelchair or talking computer to assist with mobility and communication. In 2006-07, Sunny Hill received $1.35 million in donated funds to enhance care for children living with conditions that affect their growth and development. These funds are used to support research, education, equipment, programs, leadership and the Child Development Evidence Centre. 16

Alec Black uses a sophisticated motion capture system involving multiple cameras and sensors to track a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s movements in the Shriners Gait Lab at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. This system enables BC Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital and Sunny Hill staff to determine the course of treatment for children with mobility challenges and to gauge the success of treatments.

Innovation in medical technology continues to permit steady improvement in care. Advances in imaging and diagnostics speed treatment and healing. New tools enable new techniques such as image-guided, minimally invasive surgery. Technology, in the hands of skilled professionals, is helping children learn to walk again after suffering debilitating injuries. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enabling them to return home sooner, with less pain, following treatment. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s saving lives. The equipment we provide for our scientists and medical professionals is more than metal, wires and microchips; it is hope. It is life.

BC’s Children’s Hospital provides expert care for the province’s most seriously ill or injured children. Many of the specialized pediatric services at Children’s are not available anywhere else in the province.

O U R H O S P I T A L F A M I LY

Each year, Hospital employees dedicate time and energy to help the children of BC. Last year, in addition to their daily commitment to our kids, members of the Hospital Family made significant financial contributions to our cause. In 2006, 45 Hospital Family leaders, including physicians, researchers and executives from BC Children’s Hospital and the Child & Family Research Institute, contributed a total of $451,500 and made pledges of $739,500 over the next five years. Demonstrating leadership in workplace philanthropy, each of these 45 individuals became members of the Children’s Circle of Care with an annual gift of $10,000 or more to Children’s Hospital. With matching funds, these leadership gifts amount to more than $900,000. Hundreds more of our Hospital Family members from Children’s, the Research Institute and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children contributed another $81,895 last year, and made pledges of $245,137 over the next five years. In several Hospital departments, 100 per cent of employees supported the Foundation.These include the Safe Start Program, the Division of Developmental Pediatrics and BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. 21

When Vancouver businessman and philanthropist Djavad Mowafaghian saw the cramped quarters where young cancer patients at BC Children’s Hospital waited for and received treatment, he felt compelled to act. His gift in 2004 of $6 million to the Hospital is having an impact on an ever greater number of children, their families and the caregivers who staff the day clinics in the Djavad Mowafaghian Wing. Where patients and caregivers once struggled in close and cluttered quarters, there is now light and space. Renovation of the Oncology/Hematology/Hemophilia Day Clinic was completed in early 2006. Since then, the Allergy,Asthma Education and Respiratory clinics have been rebuilt, as have the Pulmonary Function and Exercise Physiology labs and the Diagnostic Neurophysiology Department. These clinics, along with others in the Hospital, and the Ambulatory Care and Mental Health buildings, see over 100,000 patient visits every year. The final phase of the renovation project, which includes a new lobby, Auxiliary gift shop and refreshment area, is nearing completion. Mr. Mowafaghian’s commitment to improving conditions in these areas reflects his desire to have an immediate impact on the lives of BC’s children. 22

Worldwide, almost 11 million children under the age of five die every year from malnutrition, infections, measles or malaria. The vision of the Centre for International Child Health is to train health-care professionals and improve child health care in developing countries. Our Centre puts BC Children’s Hospital in the forefront of global child health leadership, giving us an edge in recruiting future pediatric leaders to our site. Since 2004, the Centre for International Child Health has established partnerships in China, Uganda and Ladakh, India. In 2006, three cardiac specialists and one newborn intensive care specialist from China spent up to a year training at BC Children’s Hospital. In September 2006, a team of five neuroscience professionals from Guangzhou Children’s Hospital in China arrived and participated in a six-month training program with our neurosciences team to increase their knowledge and skills. The first phase of the Brighter Smiles oral health program, a partnership with Uganda’s Makerere University and Mulago Hospital, took place in Uganda in the summer of 2006. Nearly 600 elementary students in four communities participated in this program to promote better oral health in children.

In two new initiatives health-care providers from BC Children’s will provide training in emergency medicine and infectious diseases to caregivers in China. A rehabilitative training program in Ladakh, India begins in June 2007. 23

The Excellence in Child Health Fund supports the areas of greatest need at BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, and the Child & Family Research Institute. These undesignated donations fund vital research, staff and family education programs, and the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment – all essential to maintaining the unique and specialized care that children require. Funding priorities are determined by the Hospital, Sunny Hill and Research Institute each year, and the availability of undesignated funding enables these three facilities to address urgent needs quickly. The Excellence in Child Health Fund is critical to our ability to provide optimal medical care and treatment to BC’s kids. In 2006-07, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation contributed $14.3 million to meet the urgent funding needs of the Hospital and Sunny Hill. 24

CHILDHOOD CANCER PROGRAMS & RESEARCH

Cancer therapies developed in the 1940s and ‘50s were more often based on trial and error than science. Today, scientists work at the molecular level to develop medications that destroy cancer cells. Last year, there were over 7,000 visits to our Oncology Outpatient Clinic and over 1,000 kids were in follow-up care. Each year, 100 more BC children become long-term survivors of cancer. Our researchers estimate that there are more than 5,000 survivors of childhood cancer in BC today. We conduct an integrated research program within the Hospital and in four research laboratories. We provide significant leadership in clinical trials in the Children’s Oncology Group, the Pediatric Bone Marrow and Transplant Consortium, and the Canadian alliance of pediatric oncology treatment centres. We completed clinical trials for a new drug – Gleevec – the first of its kind developed to fight cancer by turning off an enzyme that causes cells to become cancerous and multiply. Gleevec can be taken orally rather than by injection, and is now being used to treat some forms of leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer.

Our survival and cure rates rank with the best in the world. We recently recruited Dr. Rod Rassekh, who completed his MA in Health Care & Epidemiology at UBC as the Michael Cuccione Foundation Fellow. 25

CARDIAC CARE

Cardiac care for children has changed dramatically since BC Children’s Hospital first opened. Today, many newborn babies require just one surgery to repair defects. New catheter techniques are used to dilate vessels and valves and to close holes and abnormal arteries. And a team approach – involving a cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon – allows the heart to be repaired more easily and with better outcomes for the child. Roughly 400 babies are born with heart conditions at our site each year. Our surgeons performed more than 130 open-heart surgeries on children last year, most on patients younger than a year old. Researchers at the Child & Family Research Institute collaborate with Children’s cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to reduce the risks of pediatric open-heart surgery, prevent heart disease and improve treatments for children and infants with cardiac conditions. Our success rates for open-heart surgery on infants over one month of age and children older than one year are consistently over 97 per cent – better than the Canadian average. Our cardiac team is also helping children in China. For the past three years, cardiac specialists from BC Children’s have made two trips a year to Children’s Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai, performing over 50 life-saving heart surgeries on children and training Chinese medical professionals in pediatric cardiac care. 26

Report of the President and Chair

2006-07 was a year of milestones and anniversaries for the Foundation, as well as BC Children’s Hospital’s 25th year of operation at its current site and Sunny Hill Health Centre’s 75th anniversary. With your support we reached new heights, with record annual revenue of $91 million in pledges and cash. We received donations from 82,513 people, over 4,000 more than last year. This reflects the importance British Columbians attach to the well-being of our children. We saw the opening of the Hospital’s new Mental Health Building, made possible with the support of many donors. We were also able to announce the completed renovation of several day clinics in the newly named Djavad Mowafaghian Wing – renovations that have provided a more comfortable and efficient area for the children and families who visit these clinics. 27

BC Children’s Hospital has more than 154,000 patient visits each year to the combined Ambulatory (outpatient) Clinics.

We received a $20-million pledge from the Overwaitea Food Group for Child Health BC, a network that will improve access to pediatric care for children across the province. These funds will support further pediatric training of health professionals; facilitate consultation between regional caregivers and specialists at Children’s; and help establish pediatric clinics in BC communities. During the year, we financed the purchase of an MRI-compatible incubator – the first of its kind in Canada. This incubator enables clinical researchers to scan the brains of newborns – including premature babies who sometimes suffer early brain damage – with minimal risk and disruption. It enhances our understanding of early brain development and enables doctors to provide more information to parents regarding the implications of brain injuries. The funding that you – our donors – provide BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, and our Child & Family Research Institute ensures our children have access to the facilities and the equipment needed to treat them. Without these places and things, children and families would endure greater hardship and would not receive the best care possible. Ultimately we measure our success in terms of people – often, but not exclusively, children. As this annual report goes to print, we are celebrating 22 years of raising funds for childhood cancer research through the annual Childrun, our 20th annual Miracle Weekend telethon, our 20th annual Crystal Ball, our 20th annual Festival of Trees, 19 years

of Chinese-Canadian telethons, 18 years of the Shaw Multicultural Telethon, 17 years of Jeans Day and Slo-Pitch events, and 12 consecutive For Children We Care galas. The success of these events, year after year, and others held in support of our Foundation, is the result of the participation of hundreds of thousands of British Columbians – volunteers and donors who share their time and resources for the sake of BC’s kids. Many families and children share intimate, emotional and often painful stories to help others understand the need. Medical professionals, researchers, administrators and support staff share our vision and know that beyond the challenges we all face in our day-to-day work there is a cause worthy of their time and energy. We owe a debt of gratitude beyond measure to these people. In this annual report we have described how your contributions have made a difference, and shared the stories of just a few of the children you have helped. Report from Finance Committee

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation ended its fiscal year showing a significant increase in revenue from previous years. We are pleased to report that the Foundation’s 2006-07 audited financial statements show consolidated revenues of over $54.4 million. These revenues enabled us to provide $37.5 million in funding to BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, to add $4.4 million to our endowments and to end the fiscal year with a small unrestricted surplus. The Finance Committee continues to closely monitor the performance of our investment fund managers to ensure the Foundation realizes the greatest possible return on invested funds. In the 2006 calendar year, strong markets and careful fund management led to a total return on investment of 12.2 per cent, supporting revenue growth. The Children’s Hospital Lottery had one of its most successful years, generating $3.3 million for pediatric medical research conducted at the Child & Family Research Institute. The 2006 Miracle Weekend, our 19th, contributed in excess of $13 million to revenue, while major gifts from individual and corporate supporters contributed $15.8 million. Nearly double the previous year’s total.

Once again, KPMG, our auditor, delivered an unqualified audit opinion on the Foundation’s financial statements, supporting our efforts to remain accountable to our supporters and to maintain the integrity of our operations. The incredible success of recent years means that our financial goals for the future will undoubtedly be our most ambitious to date. Working in partnership with the Provincial Health Services Authority, the provincial government and care providers throughout the province, we will continue to support the redevelopment of BC Children’s Hospital and enhance child-health programs across the province. Many people support Children’s Hospital through estate plans, gifts in their will, with gifts of life insurance or a charitable trust. Some donors choose to create tribute gifts as a lasting remembrance of a loved one. These gifts honour friends, family, mentors and loved ones. They can be designated to a particular area of interest, or left undesignated to meet the Hospital’s most urgent needs.

Not long ago it was quite common for children to spend a night in hospital following relatively minor procedures. Today, children who stay overnight tend to have more serious medical conditions, such as cancer, and sometimes spend weeks or even months in rooms such as the one above in the Oncology inpatient unit.

Every year thousands of British Columbians find a way to support BC Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital, the Child & Family Research Institute and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children.
