Festival celebrates beauty, history of Bucks, in a time-honored manner arm sun, smell of the new mown W hay and … mineral spirits?

The first juried Bucks County Plein Air

Festival kicks off this week, when 50 artists from all over America will set up easels in various outdoor locations throughout Bucks County to feverishly paint up a storm. Artists from as far away as California will be competing for over $15,000 in prizes and creating an exhibition of work of more than 200 original pieces on display at the Plein Air Festival next Saturday, and in some cases with the paint still wet!

The Plein Air Tradition

In keeping with the en plein air tradition, the artists will explore preselected sites over three days to capture Bucks County’s “authentic essence”. The painters will choose their subjects, picking from beautiful and varied landscapes; from the broad rolling hills, dotted with livestock and farms, woods with hidden covered bridges and streams, to the quaint towns and river villages, seemingly untouched by the passage of time.

Artists have long painted outdoors. Painting en plein air was developed during the

RENNINGER’S WORKS displayed alongside those of her colleagues— present-day artists TOM CHESAR, RICHARD LENNOX and JUDITH SUTTON—highlights the visual conversations among all four painters.

The Festival features an exhibition and sale of all the artists’ work captured on canvas by some of the finest and acclaimed plein air painters from across the country. At 11 a.m. observe their techniques, when all 50 artists compete in the Quick Draw Challenge sponsored by the Arts & Cultural Council of Bucks County.

The Festival is free to the public and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. Celebrate and support the enrichment art brings to our Bucks County community.

Tuesday, June 7

DAY 1 Artists Paint Northern Bucks Spot the artists capturing everyday life in Perkasie, vistas on Lake Nockamixon, or life as it was at Pearl S. Buck’s farm or the river villages, from Point Pleasant to Upper Black Eddy to the east.

Wednesday, June 8

DAY 2 Artists Paint Central Bucks Easels will pop-up on Doylestown’s Mercer Mile, Washington’s Moland House Headquarters in Warwick, or the tow-paths and villages of New Hope and Lumberville and hidden gems in-between.

Thursday, June 9

DAY 3 Artists Paint Southern Bucks The artists must decide where history takes them;

Bristol’s Radcliffe Street, King George II Inn and its riverfront views; Newtown Borough, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places; or Washington Crossing Historic Park.

Friday, June 10

DAY 4 Tyler Tasting Party, 6-10 p.m.

Enjoy an evening filled with sumptuous food, wine, spirits, music and art at the 28th annual Tyler Tasting Party held at Bucks’ scenic Newtown campus. Voted “Best Foodie Event” for three years running, the Tyler Tasting Party will entertain attendees in the historic Tyler mansion and gardens, including a preview of the juried Plein Air works and award presentations with Master of Ceremonies David Rago, a local Bucks art appraiser on TV’s Antique Road Show. $125/tax deductible tickets available at www.bucks. edu/foundation.

Saturday, June 11

DAY 5 Bucks Plein Air Festival, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Join us in BucksCounty Community College’s Linksz Pavilion for the Plein Air art exhibit and sale, music, specialty food trucks, the College’s Artmobile, and family-friendly activities that will be on hand.

Classically trained in oil painting, Lauren is inspired by Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Vermeer and the French and Pennsylvania Impressionists.

Lauren’s landscape paintings are done both en plein air and in her studio.

Barry’s goal is to create a painting or drawing that represents a “moment” and brings something to the viewer that helps them to see more of their world.

Dottie loves the challenge of capturing the fleeting effects of light and conveying a feeling of place with freshness and spontaneity. Her work combines strong compositional elements and a concern for light and color with careful attention to abstract patterns.

first annual bucks county Kenn Backhaus, Signature Member and Past President, Plein-Air Painters of America Kenn Backhaus is a Master level artist in Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society, and past president of the Plein Air Painters of America, the oldest and most prestigious plein air group in the country. His paintings have won numerous awards, including Best in Show, Collector’s Choice, and Artist’s Choice. Kenn now resides and works in the famous Bucks County region, truly practicing in the historic traditions of the Pennsylvania Impressionists.

Al Gury, Chair of Painting, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts A painter, educator, published author, and curator, Al Gury is a recipient of the Cresson Traveling Fellowship and numerous grants and awards for painting and arts education, and was designated a master teacher by both The University of the Arts in Philadelphia as well as American Artist magazine. His work has been exhibited at the National Academy of Design in NY, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Capital in Washington D.C among others across the country.

Alan Fetterman, Bucks County Plein Air Artist A highly recognized and awardwinning American artist, Alan Fetterman produces work sought and collected for continuing the Pennsylvania and Bucks County impressionist and plein air traditions. He has been featured in over 30 solo exhibitions, his work and life have been profiled in dozens of magazines, columns, and books. Alan carries a personal and endearing connection to the rolling landscapes of Pennsylvania, especially those of Bucks County, where he lives.

Lisa Tremper Hanover, Director & CEO, James A. Michener Art Museum Lisa Tremper Hanover was named Director and CEO of the James A. Michener Art Museum in March 2012 after a successful tenure as Director of the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College. Since then she has overseen the transformation of the Michener Art Museum’s physical facility with new façade landscaping, revitalization of permanent collection galleries, refreshed curatorial efforts, and attracted over 100,000 visitors with the highly popular exhibition “From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly – Beyond the Icon.”
