Dear Friends and Supporters Our organization has proven that in times of great upheaval, we will not just survive, but thrive.

Over the last year the country faced two undeniably historic challenges. In response to the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, individuals and organizations transitioned to virtual spaces for school, work, and socialization, finding new ways to be together while keeping each other safe. In May of 2020, following the murder of George Floyd, black organizers led the nation-wide uprising to address and end racism across the country.

Breast Cancer Action has shown both adaptability and resilience through these calls to action. We have done so while continuing to remain financially secure during a global pandemic, ensuring the work of the breast cancer resistance remains a priority for individuals, advocacy organizations, and government leadership throughout immense social change.

As people across the nation are adapting to working from home, we have chosen to embrace this opportunity. BCAction has gone completely virtual and let go of our physical office space. We see the transition to a remote team not as a challenge but as an invitation to more fully take on the work of the cancer resistance across the country.

We have recommitted to ongoing anti-racist trainings with our staff, and to continue to speak out against injustice as a social justice and health justice organization. In the Spring of 2020 former Executive Director Karuna Jaggar released the article “Why We Must Be Anti-Racist.” Her writing made our position clear: black lives matter. We will not shy away from interrogating the complex ways in which racism manifests in our lives, including the health disparities we see amongst people diagnosed with breast cancer.

Our work is radically independent and our mission is uniquely enduring. Through social upheaval and shifting movement priorities, the Breast Cancer Action voice and watchdog perspective remain indispensable in speaking truth to power to address the breast cancer crisis. We couldn’t do this work if we took money from corporations that profit from or contribute to breast cancer. Thanks to your support, we don’t have to ever compromise our commitment to address and end this devastating disease.

RAPID RESPONSE TO PROTECT PUBLIC HEALTH

This year we continued our role as a trusted watchdog for the breast cancer community. We monitored a range of

legislative, agency, and treatment relevant issues.

We mobilized our national members to learn more about breast cancer issues and to take action by contacting decision-makers with online engagement tools. In addition, we were able to leverage our partnerships and role in coalitions to add and uplift a breast cancer perspective.

We provided on-going critical analysis of the COVID-19 crisis by identifying gaps in the healthcare system and mapping out implications for breast cancer patients. Additionally, we signed on to several COVID-related letters, including calling for a moratorium on utility shut offs, advocating for the inclusion of the Lymphedema Treatment Act in the next COVID relief response, and calling on California Governor Newsom to oppose new fracking permits. We also featured global health activist Gregg Gonsalves on our podcast to discuss health activism in the age of COVID-19.

Our Executive Director worked with two cross-disciplinary breast implant working groups to advise the Food and Drug Administration. In addition to submitting suggested black box warning language, they are working to develop a check list that will improve informed consent for patients. The FDA issued a draft update of its labeling guidance for breast implants. We mobilized hundreds of our members to take action and tell the FDA to strengthen its labeling guidance for breast implants and added new informed consent language.

Breast Cancer Action believes that protecting the public from toxic exposures is essential. In the middle of a pandemic, the administration is once again trying to push through its revised Censored Science rule. If passed, the revised Censored Science rule would give corporate and industry polluters a free pass. It would undermine patient privacy and hamper the Environmental Protections Agency’s ability to keep us safe from environmental exposures linked to breast cancer by disallowing many high-quality, peer-reviewed studies which are the basis of important protective regulations. We mobilized our members to submit public comments to the EPA telling them to oppose this crippling rule.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS AND THOUGHT LEADERSHIP • Our Executive Director joined the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting in San Diego, California to speak with the Executive Committee at a specially convened summit on the subject of breast implants.

• We attended and spoke out at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), the largest breast cancer conference in the world, to challenge researchers from a patient perspective and engage with allies. Additionally, our Executive Director provided real-time commentary and critical analysis of the breast cancer research presented to thousands of participants and observers.

As a respected authority on breast cancer, Breast Cancer Action Breast Can-

cer Action frequently weighs in with opinion pieces and serves as an expert source for journalists around the country on important breast cancer topics. Our Executive Director’s opinion piece, “Pink-Ribbon Culture is Gaslighting Women,” which appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, was circulated widely on social media. Another op-ed on Medium, “Komen Continues to Be Tone Deaf and Colorblind,” also received an enthusiastic social media response.

• Continuing to promote education on the health impacts of PFAS, current PFAS regulation and the implications of and connection to breast cancer, our Executive Director was invited to sit on a panel hosted by our partners at the Environmental Working Group to further discuss the connection of forever chemicals and breast cancer.

• This year we launched a podcast as a new vehicle for reaching members and providing information from long-standing work and expertise from expert scientists, a radical activist, an investigative journalist, and women living with breast cancer to empower our audience to disrupt the breast cancer industry. Episode topics included The Origins of the Pink Ribbon; Think Before You Pink; PFAS; Breast Implants; The Politicization of Science; and Activism, AIDS, and COVID-19.

In our role as a thought leader, we participated in a number of events and conferences across the country.

• Breast Cancer Action was featured as the invited speaker for the Alaska Community Action on Toxics’ lecture series on breast cancer and the environment. Our Executive Director and a Board member gave a public lecture at the main Anchorage library and spoke to several high schools.

Throughout the campaign, we turned to many of our environmental justice and scientific partners who are experts on PFAs for guidance and advice.

However, we were also able to use our unique voice and truth-telling, watchdog perspective to combine research about PFAs and breast cancer, and packaged it in a compelling way, which became a new and important contribution.

STOPPING BREAST CANCER BEFORE IT STARTS

Since our founding 29 years ago, we have worked to identify and eliminate the root causes of breast cancer. As

a leading voice in the movement, Breast Cancer Action continues to connect public health with environmental concerns about fossil fuels. Our leadership in The Last Chance Alliance (LCA) continues.

Today the LCA coalition includes over 800 member groups and is pressuring California Governor Newsom to end fracking and dangerous drilling.

Throughout the year we have engaged in direct action and called on our members to contact decision makers, asking for a phase out of fossil fuels.

The entire Breast Cancer Action team joined our partners in the Last Chance Alliance to send Governor Newsom a strong message to stop new fossil fuel projects, drop existing oil production, and roll back setbacks before his annual State of the State

address. Our Program Officer testified in front of state regulators from California Geologic Energy Management (Cal-GEM) and Governor Newsom’s administration, emphasizing that fossil fuels are fueling the cancer crisis.

DEMANDING HEALTH JUSTICE

For 30 years, we’ve been a leading voice calling for compassionate, culturally competent, evidence-based, affordable breast cancer treatment for everyone.

Since our founding, Breast Cancer Action has worked to expand access to quality, evidence-based healthcare for all people. For ten years, we have supported the Lymphedema Treatment Act which would end this injustice by changing Medicare law to cover compression supplies—setting an important precedent for Medicaid and other insurers to do the same. This year, the Lymphedema Treatment Act passed through the House under the Lower Drug Costs Now Act. The Lower Drug Costs Now Act would provide Medicare coverage for medically necessary supplies to treat lymphedema and help lower costs and increase access to prescription drugs by allowing the government to negotiate with drug companies.

Breast Cancer Action is working with our partners to pass this legislation through the Senate.

Breast Cancer Action looks past the hype to independently evaluate new breast cancer drugs. This year, in addition to many other topics, we published a series of blog posts that provide updates and analysis of the latest breast cancer research and treatment.

We offer information that can’t be found elsewhere, including our new Toolkit to Navigate Breast Cancer, a two-part indispensable guide.

The toolkit is comprised of What You Need to Know About Breast Cancer and Tools and Tips for a New Breast Cancer Diagnosis to help anyone who has been newly diagnosed, as well as their caregivers, to learn about their options and partner effectively with their providers to choose the treatment that is best for them.

We also provide one-on-one information and resources free of charge to anyone who needs it. We don’t provide medical advice but our experienced and compassionate staff fields hundreds of calls and emails a year from people who’ve just re-
