MESSAGE

MAXIMIZE THE ART OF RISK TAKING

Welcome to the 15th Annual Pillars Conference

This year’s theme, "Maximize the Art of Risk Taking,” addresses the reality of risk in every situation. Although living with risk may seem like simply leaving things to chance, we must learn to distinguish between scenarios that give us time to think things through and those that don’t allow the luxury of time but demand that we make an immediate decision or choice. Rational decision-making in risk situations is both an art and a science, as we will learn from our conference speakers Their differing perspectives and unique insights will guide our exploration of this critically important topic.

A former marine and current pilot will share insights on risk assessment and decision-making in high-stakes situations, drawing from his military and commercial aviation experiences. A program director serving the homeless will discuss the risks involved in providing aid and support to vulnerable populations, offering a unique perspective from the social services sector A former NFL offensive lineman now serving as a financial planner will offer his perspective on managing personal finance and investment risks. And a current university president from Haiti will impart the wisdom and expertise he has gained while leading an educational institution during times of political chaos and instability.

The opposite of taking chances or living by luck, maximizing the art of risktaking requires imagination, courage, bravery, and integrity. The art and science of risk-taking entails an ongoing commitment to reality and to new possibilities at all costs When we consider Leonardo DaVinci's early drawing of a flying machine (image below) and the Wright Brothers’ powered flight at Kitty Hawk, which it inspired (on the brochure cover), we understand that these both exemplify the art of risk-taking: bold, innovative attempts to push the boundaries of human knowledge and capabilities, driven by curiosity and a willingness to embrace the unknown.

Join us as we explore the principles guiding these visionaries and learn to apply such calculated risk-taking strategies to our own endeavors.

Sincerely,

SPEAKERS

MAXIMIZE THE ART OF RISK TAKING

MINIMIZE YOUR EXCUSES

President Jean D. Darius will deliver a two-part keynote address on "Maximizing Risk in Times of Chaos," exploring the concept of risk-taking and its implications in various aspects of life The presentation will be complemented by student presentations that highlight real-life experiences of embracing risk and uncertainty. The first student subsection will highlight excerpts from veterans' oral histories that showcase their experiences with risk-taking, overcoming fear, and personal growth through adversity. The second subsection will highlight stories and testimonials from international students about the risks they took in pursuing education abroad

Mitigation of financial risks

Mark Baniewicz will discuss robust risk mitigation tactics for investing and managing finances effectively. The importance of preparing for economic storms by stress-testing investment portfolios will be highlighted. The presentations provide attendees with practical strategies for mitigating financial risk while embracing calculated risks that can lead to sustainable growth and positive societal impact. The student subsection will showcase the application of Social Return on Investment (SROI) as a tool for measuring the true value created by risk-taking initiatives.

THE ART OF RISK TAKING

Jean Dona Darius, president of L'Université Chrétienne du Nord d'Haïti (UCNH), made the daring choice to return to his homeland, Haiti, amidst the nation's spiraling chaos and gang violence. His decision exemplifies the art of calculated risk-taking in the face of adversity, driven by an unwavering commitment to restoring hope where it has been all but extinguished Having lived and worked in the United States, France, and Belgium, Darius has witnessed firsthand the stark contrast between the promises and challenges that risk-taking presents across diverse cultural landscapes.

This breadth of experience has shaped his vision of addressing Haiti's turmoil as an urgent need on the global stage. Undeterred by the nation's descent into lawlessness, with gangs controlling vast swaths of the capital and essential services crumbling, Darius has chosen to confront the chaos head-on as the president of UCNH, the 77-year-old university in Northern Haiti. His decision is a testament to the power of resilience and the belief that even in the darkest of times, hope can be rekindled through bold action

While many have abandoned Haiti to its fate, Darius stands resolute, embodying the essence of risk-taking in chaotic times His journey reminds us that true change often requires venturing into the unknown, embracing uncertainty, and challenging the status quo.

THE ART OF RISK TAKING

Mark Baniewicz didn’t follow the typical path into the world of finance. After majoring in the subject as an undergraduate, he turned down a Rhodes Scholarship to join the NFL Over the course of his brief professional football career, he saw his contemporaries fall into all sorts of financial troubles, despite impressive contracts. Mark saw that people with money were often taken advantage of and rarely protected properly—something he set out to fix when founding Socius

Mark first began managing capital upon leaving the NFL to earn his M B A , where he was part of a small group of students tasked with managing a portion of the university’s endowment fund. His group outperformed the professional managers Mark has been living and breathing finance ever since

A Certified Financial Planner™ professional, Mark founded Socius in 2004 to help families navigate a financial services industry that was stacked against them and overly salesoriented As the President and CEO, he provides leadership and strategic direction, contributes to major decisions around client capital, and spends as much time as he can with clients

Mark earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, and his Master of Business Administration from the University of North Florida

Risk of Soaring to Great Heights

Risk in Compassionate Service

Keith and Gesula Cavanaugh will emphasize the importance of prioritizing people through the principles of servant leadership, a leadership philosophy that focuses on serving others Drawing lessons from working with those who experience homelessness, Cavanaugh will share insights on ethical risk-taking and finding the balance between profit and purpose. The presentations will be complemented by student reports proposing ethical frameworks, guidelines, or best practices for the responsible integration of Brain-Machine Interface (BMI), contributing to the broader conversation on balancing the art of interacting with human beings while mitigating the risk of dehumanization that may occur due to interfacing with machines.

The image of the aircraft on the cover is The Wright Flyer (also known as the Kitty Hawk, Flyer I or the 1903 Flyer)

The Kitty Hawk is the first aircraft to make sustained flight. To do so, the Wright brothers exemplified a disciplined and calculated approach to risk-taking. They methodically prepared by conducting extensive research, wind tunnel tests, and incremental glider experiments to gain aerodynamic data and master control before attempting powered flight.

They chose the ideal location of Kitty Hawk for safe testing and took deliberate precautions like ensuring soft landing areas. Wilbur emphasized the importance of not taking "dangerous risks" prematurely, instead advocating for a step-by-step process of incrementally introducing greater risks only after mastering each preceding stage. This prudent, iterative approach allowed them to make pioneering achievements while meticulously managing and mitigating risks along the way.
