market snapshot It’s the calm before the storm. Since Vail Resorts purchased our ski area last fall, we have observed lots of new visitors with accents from afar. Through Vail’s marketing and their Epic pass, which allows members to ski at participating resorts worldwide, many visitors are discovering Crested Butte for the first time. We had a great year of snowfall, with nearly fifty percent more than average. This translates to return visits this summer from people who really enjoy our outdoor lifestyle, world class skiing and friendly people. Our real estate sector is now experiencing the positive effects of the Vail attraction. Condominiums on the mountain are being absorbed quickly as they enter the market. The average condo is now $490,000, a 40% increase from the spring of last year. Homes in town are going fast, and inventory is very light. Land sales have continued to increase with diminishing availability. Prices continue to firm up as new offerings are obtaining higher prices. More expensive properties are selling, fueled by investor confidence and a desire for portfolio and lifestyle diversification. Average Price* Crested Butte Mt Crested Butte Mt CB Condo/ TH Crested Butte Rural CB South Land
$ 1.3 million $ 1 million $ 490,000 $ 1 million $ 725,000 $ 384,000
Why so much demand, in a leveling national climate? People are seeking quality of life. They are working remotely, removed from the congestion of urban living. Crested Butte is literally a last frontier at the end of the road. Our forefathers and leaders have been vigilant in protecting the quaintness of our community and moderating thoughtful growth. Our town is a National Historic District. As a complement, we are opening a fabulous new Center for the Arts which will host compelling visual, literary and performing arts events. Bluebird is the exclusive marketing representative for Aperture, the premier development for distinctive new homes on up to one-acre tracts within walking distance to downtown. Several homes are under construction this summer, all with panoramic mountain views and easy access to trails and the Slate River. As the fastest growing brokerage in the valley, Bluebird leads the market with $150 million in active volume and 50 properties priced over $1 million. Our inventory represents one third of the offerings in the Crested Butte region. With low interest rates, the limited availability of real estate, and the success which surrounds Vail owned resorts, Crested Butte is positioned to be a great investment destination for the foreseeable future. * CREN MLS, 4/17/19, rounded to the nearest 1000th.

humble heights by bud bush
ometimes you’re going with the flow, enjoying what you love, and you wake up one day and realize you have something special. This is the story of world champion half pipe freestyle skier Aaron Blunck, of Crested Butte, who just loves to ski and be with his friends. At 22, he already has the perspective of a seasoned athlete, partly because he started competing on a world platform as a teenager, but mostly from his humble upbringing and perspective on life and sports.
this is real “Growing up, there were skiers and there were hockey players,” compares Aaron as he describes the athleticism of kids in Crested Butte. Aaron played both sports at the time. The ski teams and hockey teams had rigorous schedules which included training and travel. “My dad encouraged us (with his brother, Nolan) to pick a sport because we weren’t helping either team when we weren’t there.” Aaron’s father recognized Aaron’s talents in skiing and lead him to the ski academy in Vail to become a formidable competitor in freestyle skiing. “I just love to ski, and started out following my brother around the mountain,” smiles Blunck. Things changed a bit with the move to Vail during high school. “This was a whole new set of friends who were different from me. I grew up in a working-class family, and they couldn’t understand why I was always go-go, with a hard work ethic. This is just how I was raised.” 16
“My friend, Torin (Yater-Wallace) and I were blessed that we were able to ski with the dudes we looked up to,” reflected Aaron on the early days of competition. As they learned about the trappings of being cocky and entitled, he became philosophical with, “You have one podium and you’re not the biggest dog out there…don’t ask for a lot, and good things will come your way.” Thinking about leading by example, he added, “My parents raised me to be true to myself, and don’t be the village idiot.” The transition was a challenge, but everything started to click in Vail. As his skills sharpened, Aaron earned an invitation to the youth Olympics, then the pro circuit. “Getting the X Games spot,” exuded Aaron, “everything changed from there. Ok, this is real.” When referring to goals and pressures, he explains, “I like to see where things take me…I expect the worst, and if anything better happens, it’s the cherry on top of the cake.”
on top Aaron Blunck has competed in two Olympics and multiple world championships and X Games competitions. He speaks about the comparisons of different stages, “The Olympics are very stressful, especially competing for four spots among twenty US athletes. There is no time for errors. We have to be ‘on’ all season long.” Since the winter Olympics occurs once every four years, all of the preparation and timing have to align perfectly for the main event. Speaking about the competitions leading up to his most recent trip to PyeongChang, China in 2018, he woefully notes, “three events and three hospitals,” foreshadowing his less than perfect condition and performance.
summer & fall | 2019
An Olympic medal has evaded his winnings, but Blunck was the X Games champion in 2017. “The X Games is the most meaningful event for free skiers because this is where it all started, and it attracts the top athletes worldwide,” exclaims Aaron. The Olympics and world championships came later. This timeline is similar for slopestyle, snowboarding, supercross, biking and skateboarding, which all premiered as competitive sports in the X Games. The X Games gets the most media coverage, but the world championships has the distinctive title and attracts the big sponsors. Aaron recently became the World Champion in freestyle half pipe skiing in Utah and modestly reflects on his pinnacle achievement as just one of many stops on the tour, “Great, I won this event, but the next event you never know…two weeks later, I go to Mammoth and don’t even make the final.” Riding half pipes is very difficult on the body. The surfaces are very firm and ice packed, and falling as well as landing the wrong way creates fractures, dislocations and contusions. He recognizes, “In this sport, I know I’m gonna get hurt, so just be humble about it. There’s a point when you’re on top of the world, then the next thing you know, you’re lost in the crowd.”
roots and influences Aaron grew up and still lives in Crested Butte, a small Rocky Mountain town full of elite athletes and majestic peaks that keep him in check, “You’re never going to be bigger than the mountains. My parents taught me that.” Aaron’s mother is a former ski school instructor and his grandfather, Robel Straubhaar started the ski school in 1961. Blunck loves to be home in the mountains, either taking solo hikes or rides while being inspired by the landscape, or meeting friends in the backcountry for some smooth turns on soft terrain. He remains humbled by his hometown vibe, reflecting, “There’s always something bigger and greater than you.”
Speaking about the people of his town, Aaron appreciates how supportive the community and his family have been. Admiring his brother, he smiles, “Nolan skied first, so I had to do it. He’s two years older and we pushed each other in a friendly way – not competitive. Nolan loves photography, but he’s still a ripping skier. It’s a great combination for us. If I had to have one dude with me at all times, it’s him. He’s a motivator, smart and strong willed. There is total trust with us – family and protection.”
what’s next You might think that a twenty-two-year-old athlete might just be getting started, but in the world of half pipe free skiing, the veterans move to other areas usually by their late twenties. This is due to the pounding nature of the unforgiving arched block of ice that they navigate. In talking about the pipes, Aaron’s favorites are Park City, Utah and Copper Mountain, Colorado. “Park City has the perfect slope of 19 degrees, steep but not too steep, and pretty warm comparatively, usually above 20 degrees. I’ve done well in that pipe and trained well there.” The Park City half pipe was constructed for the 2002 Olympics and was one of the first of its kind in the world. The Copper pipe holds a special place for Aaron as he reminisces, “I had a friend, Asher Crank pass away there when he was 17. I feel like I am skiing with him at Copper. Asher got me in to freestyle in sixth grade and encouraged me to compete.” Fast forward to the near future, Aaron forecasts, “I want to be there in Bejing for the Olympics in 2022.” At that time, Blunck will be 25 years old and still in his prime. He would like to continue to compete in the X Games as well. He says that at 29, for the 2026 Olympics, he might be past his peak, “There’s so much wear and tear on your body. I’ve already had a separated shoulder, bruised heels and broken ribs among other things (like reconstructive knee surgery). There’s also post Olympics depression that is real.” Remembering the transition from the training, 17

build-up, media hype and competition, and back to ordinary life circumstances, Aaron sees new adventures following his next Olympics, “There could be touring, video parts and social media. People like seeing competitions, but they also love video of us ripping in the back country,” adding that the soft snow on the back country jumps is a lot easier on the body, not to mention huge fun and no pressure.
having fun Aaron has seen so much of the world already at such a young age, training, competing and exploring. Besides Crested Butte, Iceland has become one of his favorite places to ski. It has mellow terrain and unique vantage points, as he described, “…skiing from the top of the peak down to the ocean, and getting picked up on the beach. Iceland has the most friendly people I’ve ever met.” When he’s not skiing, Aaron loves the solitude of fishing, the juxtaposition of skateboarding and the escape of mountain biking. He thrives on the freedom of cross-country biking as well as the energy of downhill ripping. Speaking about the 700 acres of single track in Crested Butte, Aaron emphasized, “I have lots of friends who come to visit for the mountain biking even if they haven’t skied here. This is where it all started, our hall of fame and museum…people riding over Star Pass (to 18
Aspen) and Kebler Pass. This place is the mecca of mountain biking!” Having fun to Aaron means filling his ears with inspiring tunes. “When I’m cruising, it can be rock, reggae or even some outlaw country like Willie Nelson or Robert Earl Keen. For park and pipe, it might be rap or hip hop while competing…something upbeat like Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar or old Dre and NWA.” Aaron sums up his experience with, “I’m blessed to be out here, and it comes from this community. I just want to ski and bike. Money isn’t important and my friends keep me in check. I tell kids to chase their dreams and don’t listen to the naysayers. I thrive on people that tell me I can’t. My dad could have played professional sports, but no one encouraged him. My parents have been huge inspirations, telling me to do what I love and have fun.” Blunck’s humility is beyond his years and he is grateful for the life he has, and he’s enjoying the ride just the same, whether it’s on the podium or in his back yard. During a recent trip, Aaron was courteously listening to a woman from Winnetka, Illinois telling a story on the airplane. She said that her neighbor’s grandson is a professional skier from Crested Butte. Aaron laughed in humble amazement at our small world connections, “That’s actually me, and you must live next to my grandmother!”
