Beagle Technology Group, formerly Beagle Aerospace is changing and adapting to meet the demands of their dynamic market place. They have had a remarkable year, and as their new Managing Director John Taylor put it, “The past 10 months has been a very exciting time for the Company: we have undergone a phase of major investment, expansion and restructuring, John Taylor resulting in the launch of the new Beagle Technology Group. Having been in the business for over 50 years, Beagle is building on its rich heritage and unique skills set, across a wide range of technologies, to innovate and win business in new markets.” Beagle is an Aerospace, Military and Civil components manufacturer, using Composite, Sheet Metal and Machined stock. They number BAE Systems, Rolls Royce, and many major airlines among their prestigious customers, and specialise in precision components that are lightweight but manufactured to have high strength. The company also deals in the repair of aircraft structures. Since the restructuring the company is now split into 6 divisions, Maintenance Repair & Overhaul, Aerospace, Defence, Composites, Treatments and Precision, operating as a fully integrated whole, providing a comprehensive range of products and services to meet the demands of the precision engineering sector. The major event of Beagle’s year was the launch, at The Paris Air Show in June of their new name and group structure. Additionally, the Beagle Technology Group was delighted to be showcasing its thrust reverser overhaul capability and several other aircraft components for the first time at the Paris Air Show. John Taylor when making his announcement said, “We anticipate considerable interest from our customers around the world, especially as today we announce the addition of 737 New Gen reverser capability."

Other news in this eventful year includes the award to Beagle Technology Group of a major contract in July to supply composite components for an MOD Light Protected Patrol Vehicle. As a result, the company is recruiting up to 25 operatives and two supervisors to fulfil the order. They appeared for the first time at Subcon 2011, the UK’s International Subcontract Manufacturing Show, held in this year in Birmingham, in June, where Beagle Aerospace showcased its unique range of skills and process capabilities. And in May this year Beagle showcased its thrust reverser overhaul capability and several other aircraft components for the first time at the Airline Purchasing & Maintenance Expo in London’s Olympia. Beagle Technology Group is certainly not standing still; they are looking forward to the next 50 years as a globally focused group, committed, proven and reliable, able to meet the demands of their customers for an integrated solution to their requirements.

Innovative Logistics Solutions

IF you’ve got a tank that needs transporting or a helicopter requiring hoisting, PDF Services Ltd is the company to do it. Moving the more unusual items - a submarine tailshaft for instance - is all in a day’s work for the Clevedon company that is renowned as a specialist hiab operator. A Ministry of Defence logistics provider and prime lifting contract holder it may be, but PDF Services offers a complete range of organic logistical services and is confident it can provide a cost-effective solution to any logistics requirement; large or small, complex or straightforward. Its forte is the supply and use of self-loading vehicles - known as hiabs - to satisfy all lifting and transportation needs. As member of ALLMI ( theAssociation of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers), all of PDF’s drivers are fully qualified and experienced to operate its wide range of vehicles fitted with cranes, including the company’s 125 tonne/metre giant, one of the largest capacity hiabs in the UK. The added benefit of using these kinds of vehicles is that it saves you time and money by not having to organise a crane,” says PDF Services’ managing director Paul Freeman. “Our skilled drivers take care of everything for you.”

8

The company has 98 vehicles and more than 200 trailers at its disposal as part of its outstanding and comprehensive haulage service that operates throughout the country and across international boundaries. If cranes are required, be it CPA contract lifts or project lifts, the company can help, with its experts able to make a free site visit and survey to gain a more detailed understanding of a customer’s requirement before producing a detailed report with full and accurate costs.

4214:OC Robotics 18/08/2011 10:25 Page 10

Bristol company OC Robotics is “reaching the unreachable” using their snake-arm® robots. Snake-arm robots are ideally suited to many industries and hazardous environments because they are slender and self-supporting and can be steered round obstacles and in confined spaces. The exceptional ability of snake-arm robots to manoeuvre into otherwise inaccessible spaces makes them valuable in a vast number of applications in high-value industrial markets.

The company has come a long way since the first prototype was built in 2001. A decade later, OC Robotics has delivered robots and provided consultancy and analysis for industries spanning, amongst others, nuclear, aerospace and security. Confined spaces are ubiquitous, in sectors ranging from storage to construction, and in hazardous environments such as under-water, radioactive enclosures, and toxic fluids. OC Robotics is the key.

OC Robotics develops snake-arm robots for confined and hazardous spaces and offers a complete range of robotic manipulators, from the Explorer™ range through to custom bespoke solutions. They also provide robotic end effectors and tooling, and a complete range of consultancy and problem analysis services. They provide innovative solutions to other problems that may not require a snake-arm robot, but benefit from another type of robotic solution, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROV). OC Robotics was formed in 1997. The vision of the founding directors, Rob Buckingham and Andrew Graham, was to see innovative robotic systems become a commercial reality.

Aircraft manufacturers have been researching low cost, highly flexible automation for several years. However, tasks within rib bays and other low access areas found throughout aircraft structures have remained practically inaccessible to automation. Operating within a rib bay requires some of the capabilities of industrial robots, e.g. the ability to place tools precisely, but other capabilities must be added to operate within confined spaces. In particular it is necessary to have a robot arm that does not have prominent ‘elbow’ joints. Snake-arm robots, having continuous curvature along their length, are ideal for these applications. OC Robotics is working with aerospace partners, focused on aircraft assembly, to develop a comprehensive toolkit for low access assembly tasks.

OC Robotics, Unit 5, Abbey Wood Business Park, Emma-Chris Way, Filton, Bristol, BS34 7JU Telephone 01173144700 E-mail contactus@ocrobotics.com In April 2003, OC Robotics signed a contract with the UK MoD to build a snake-arm robot to be used on a remote vehicle. The arm had to be 2.5m long and able to carry a payload of 25kg. It also had to be capable of towing a car. OC Robotics has designed the system so that the arm, the cheapest part of the system, can be detached remotely allowing the robot to discard it if it gets trapped or wedged, and return to the operator so that a new arm can be attached. Arms can be quickly hotswapped if a different tool or arm size is required. OC Robotics snake-arms are axially strong because of the high loading ability of the wires running along their length and the robot was demonstrated towing a car. Snake-arm robots are ideal for use in the maintenance of nuclear reactors. In May 2010 OC Robotics completed the first deployment of a new snake-arm robot designed to conduct inspections within the Upper Feeder Cabinets of CANDU reactors. OC Robotics is IS0:9001 approved and won the Queens Award for Enterprise: Innovation in 2009. The company expects to continue its expansion while actively investigating new applications.

Pollinger & Warren ENGINEERING LTD

PRECISION is the key word at Pollinger & Warren Engineering Ltd, right from the description of the company and its services, though to the attention paid to clients’ requirements. With a total staff roll of three, the phrase ‘small is beautiful’ really applies when it comes to the Bristol firm, which has been established since the 1970s.

Because of their strict hygiene policy they were not allowed to the open doors and windows in hot conditions because of the risk of insects and vermin entering the building.” When it comes to producing one-offs, bespoke parts and components, Pollinger & Warren is ready to help, manufacturing to a customer’s drawing sketch or sample - and on the occasion that it can’t do the job, it knows someone who can.

Over the decades it has dealt with the requirements of thousands of local businesses, always providing quality work with short lead times. General precision engineering is just one aspect of the broad range of engineering services provided by the company, based in Charlton Road, Kingswood. It also carries out toolmaking and CNC machining as well as offering the complete engineering service where fabricating, welding, heat treatments and surface treatments are required. This diversity of services is reflected in the variety of clients which go to make up its large customer base that includes such prestigious names as Rolls Royce, Toyota and Kliklok. “We have small medium and multi-national businesses, each of whom get the same attention to detail regardless of size and complexity,” says company MD Steve Pollinger. Civil engineering, plant and machinery, packaging, aerospace, automotive, medical and even body jewellery are just some of the sectors for which Pollinger & Warren has produced products. Yet despite the precise nature of their craft and the close attention to detail paid by the company’s skilled employees to all projects, flexibility is of crucial importance, too. “We pride ourselves in being very adaptable and do our best to assist with all enquiries,” explains Steve. “If a customer requires help with the design of a component or tool, we can help as we have experience of working with individual clients in developing their projects and prototypes. “For example, we worked with a local packaging company, manufacturing and fitting fly screens and doors, through out its converting area.

12

“If you can’t source the part of the shelf, why not have it made,” suggests Steve. “We have experience of working with people who are into many different engineering fields such as model engineering, custom or classic car restoration, marine, boats etc. “Although not auto engineers, we have worked with car clubs machining engine blocks, cylinder heads, fly wheels and the like and have also manufactured many items for the marine and super yacht building industries.”

EMC Services (Wales) Ltd are well established electrical contractors who have been trading for 10 years. They have an extensive portfolio in the electrical field, offering services spanning domestic, industrial, commercial, maintenance, street lighting, portable testing, installation testing, emergency lighting and fire alarms. The firm also offer design and build services, contract management, project supervision and service contracts. They deal with a number of major contractors, notably Dawnus Construction Ltd, Swansea; and have also just been awarded a contract in Sierra Leone in West Africa. EMC are very proud to announce that they have gained planning permission for their new 2 storey, headquarters building at Heol Glasdwr in Parc Pensarn. The project will cost nearly ÂŁ650,000 and is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government, which means that they will be able to build the new building to the highest environmental standards, which will reflect the aims and aspirations of such a forward looking and rapidly developing company.

The move has been made possible by a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Single Investment Fund, which is helping to both safeguard jobs, and hopefully, create new jobs. The move will make EMC even more efficient, and help to reinforce their professional image. The new headquarters building occupies a high profile site on what is rapidly becoming an important new development area in Carmarthen, with good transport links, and easy access to the motorway network. This is a very significant move for EMC in its 10th year of business, and everyone at Bristol Business Post wishes them every success.

Lighting the way to the future, Lighting Services are at the cutting edge of lighting technology and services. Efficient and effective use of lighting is a major element in modern design, allied with the current need for economic, energy efficient and eco-friendly applications. Lighting Services provide a centre of excellence in the UK lighting industry, in their commitment to supplying and understanding the latest technology and their focus on the most advanced solutions in the market. They work very closely with the world’s leading manufacturers such as Phillips, Osram, Ge, Tridonic, Illuma, Zumtobel, and see it as “part of the job” to provide essential links between supplier and customer.

The University of West England owes it’s innovate lighting to Lighting Services design department, Lighting Services have installed completely new and sustainable, intelligent LED lighting solutions in a range of areas, including Reception, Café, corridors, classrooms, lecture theatres and design studios. Intelligent lighting control gives the facility to not simply programme switching on and off times; special sensors detect occupancy levels, therefore not coming on if the room is empty. The sensors also detect the levels of natural light in a room and adjust the brightness accordingly, even varying the light levels across different parts of one area. Among their many other major clients needing cost effective state of the art lighting as part of their corporate personae they include John Lewis, Bristol Airport, Air Bus and many others. The company are expanding the range of services they offer by branching out into online services for their commercial customers, with an on line shop and a brand new web-site in partnership with Illuma Lighting, www.shoplightingdirect.co.uk.

Lighting Services 3, Avon Valley Business Park, Chapel Way, St Annes, Bristol BS4 4EU Telephone 01179720030 E-mail sales@lightingservices.com The energy, and therefore cost, savings that can be made by the installation of LED lighting is often substantial, and is especially useful in light sensitive situations. The National Trust comes to Lighting Services, as the country’s leading specialist on energy efficient lighting for historically sensitive environments, for help with many of its projects. The Trust has to be very aware of costs, and of energy usage, while protecting the delicate materials in its care, and is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. Sometimes, as at Quarry Bank Mill, the solutions were fairly straightforward, the replacement of 500 existing halogen downlights with 3W and 7W LED lamps, with no need to replace the existing fittings has led to a massive annual energy saving, even after the cost of the replacement bulbs, of nearly £8000. Lighting Services brought their same balance of a modern and efficient lighting solution to another historic context, when they were entrusted with the new display lighting at the Brighton Toy Museum under the arches of Brighton Railway Station. With the use of new retrofit LED lamp solutions they were able to give them some of the most stunning display lighting seen in a museum - whilst making enormous energy and maintenance savings. Although these prestigious projects are all to do with conservation in every sense, clever use of lighting solutions is equally applicable in new situations, Lighting Services lighting design department produces dramatic, efficient, practical and simple lighting solutions, for some of the country’s most well known organisations and businesses keeping them up to date on sustainable and efficient lighting solutions.

TWO Somerset companies are reaping the benefits of joining forces. Both established and well-respected businesses singly, Landscape Services (SW) Ltd and Mike Taylor Machinery Ltd teamed up to share premises and staff earlier this year. The landmark move was marked with a high-profile opening ceremony performed by MP, Dr Liam Fox earlier this year, at their new premises on the Southfield Road Trading Estate, in Nailsea. Already the list of public and private sector clients is lengthy for both. For Landscape Services it includes English Churches Housing, Avon Fire and Rescue, Nailsea Town Council, Balfour Beatty, Interserve and Brunel Care, while Mike Taylor Machinery is proud to handle work for the University of Bristol, Bristol City FC, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, The Bishops Palace,Wells, and Tickenham Golf Centre, among others.

The gang outside the Unit. Back row left to right, Martin Lomax, Pete Weston, Will Stops, Mike Taylor. Front row, Ben Neades and Andy Smith.

The titular head of Mike Taylor Machinery, which provides Landscape Services with all of its machinery back-up, brings more than 40 years’ engineering experience to his company, including being one of the original ‘Atco Men’ a mower service engineer, starting in 1974. Today his company really bowls ‘em over in the sporting world as it has become the “go to” place for cricket pitch roller renovations, supplying them to clubs in Cornwall, London, the North East and Cambridgeshire. However, that’s just a small part of the firm’s extensive services, which also incorporate servicing and repairs to all horticultural equipment, large commercial works on tractors etc and supplies of new and used machinery.

Left to right, Will Stops, Mike Taylor, Liam Fox, workshop foreman Andy Smith, apprentice Ben Neades.

However, for each, the innovation has meant changes to business operations in terms of opening hours and sectors served - and both are enjoying the results, with new customers and commercial opportunities opening up. Will Stops of Landscape Services and Mike Taylor have known each other for many years and an obvious synergy existed between their firms so the resulting move was a real marriage of convenience. Landscape Services, founded by Will and his wife Esme in 1992, provides comprehensive grounds maintenance and landscape services, including grass cutting, weed control, hedge trimming, litter collection, tree surgery, planting and turfing to clients across Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucester, South Wales and the Forest of Dean.

“The new premises have now allowed us to expand into the domestic market,” adds Mike. “We now have a modern facility with a large workshop,wash-down area and trade counter and the domestic work balances well with the seasonal commercial work which was concentrated in the winter. “We now are open on Saturdays and we are looking at developing the retail side of things for next year with plans for a new showroom that will open in spring 2012.”

For further information about both companies, visit www.landscapeservicessw.co.uk and www.miketaylormachinery.co.uk. Landscape Services can be contacted on 01275 859 525 and Mike Taylor Machinery on 01275 852970.

In many instances, the service is bespoke, with the client deciding what is done, when and how, but the company does design site specific services for the maintenance of individual sites or customers, taking into account equipment required, timing of visits, ie out of hours or weekends, and, crucially, budget. “People are finding things hard and so we try to work with customers to ensure that they are receiving the most cost effective-service possible but maintaining high standards and reliability,” explains Will. “We are always gaining new customers but we try to grow organically ensuring that growth is sustainable and our focus is on retaining customers.”

You will be working with someone who has had seven years of architectural training – no other building professional is trained to such a level of expertise – and you will have an expert on board to help you realise your vision and add value to your project through good design and sound construction. Selecting the right architect is one of the most significant decisions anyone with a building project can make and the Royal Institute of British Architects can be relied upon to guide that choice. The RIBA was established in 1834 and received its Royal Charter five years later. In common with many trades and professions of the early Victorian period, the profession recognised that collaborative working between practitioners was beneficial in terms of raising and maintaining standards, generating business, and speaking with a collective voice on issues of mutual interest.

JANE BICK INTERIORS Interior design partnership Jane Bick Interiors are looking for a challenge, they would love to design and furnish the interiors for a castle, or perhaps another classic car. The last one, a Riley was a family affair with their brother’s company, [LJ & JL Whitcher, car finishers] doing the bodywork, while they did the hood, interior upholstery and carpets. Jane laughed as she said that the task was “Stressful but very rewarding”. Formerly known as “Jane Bick Seamstress” Jane Bick Interiors is now a husband and wife partnership, Andrew and Jane Witcher, each offering over 25 years experience in upholstery, soft furnishings and interior design, enabling them to produce work of a very high standard. Andrew covers all aspects of upholstery, from classic cars and boat interiors, to antique and new bespoke upholstered furniture, all using traditional methods. Jane can help with all your interior design problems, as well as providing quality handmade curtains, pelmets, cushions and blinds. Their large fabric library also incorporates lighting, wallpaper, paint, rugs, tassels and trimmings galore. Although much of the company’s work is undertaken for private clients their client portfolio is divided almost equally between the private and commercial sector. The bespoke service they offer is very highly valued, particularly for their sympathetic approach to period properties, and has led to their client base stretching far and wide. They currently have a large client base in both the South West and Surrey, with a few far flung clients in the Lakes and a couple in Austria! They travel a lot!

Jane Bick Interiors are currently looking for larger premises in which to display their exceptional range of fabrics and accessories, but their customers can be assured that the same attention to detail and high standard of finish will remain constant whatever project this company undertakes. Jane and Andrew insist that “all our clients are special”, although they do have the odd footballer, millionaire and hotel, the last boutique type – hotel being Jesmonds of Highworth, each client will receive the same thoughtful care and consideration. Jane and Andrew take real pride in bringing a client’s project to completion and seeing the look of pleased delight when the dream is realised.

But Building Supplies is more than just a source of wood, building aggregates and landscaping - one of its most recent ventures, Just Reclamation, was added to the company portfolio last year and specialises in architectural reclamation and salvage.

The company can also arrange for carriers to undertake deliveries which are required to go even further afield. Visitors to the site looking for building aggregates can find them available bulk bagged, midi-bagged or loose, along with large stocks of treated planed timber and decking, sheet materials, ironmongery, rainwater and underground drainage. There’s plenty of bricks and blocks, too, and customers who are looking for something specific can take advantage of the free brick matching service.

ROBERT FLEMING Masonry and Conservation Limited Robert Fleming is a specialist stone mason with a strong interest in conservation and historic buildings. Robert has been a stone mason for nearly 30 years and has gained a wealth of experience in all aspects of Stone Masonry. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Stone Conservation. In July 2005 he and his wife started Robert Fleming Masonry and Conservation Ltd., which remains a small company only using skilled and trusted sub-contractors when certain specialist skills are required or extra labour is needed.

The design incorporated several different window surrounds and niches which could be used in a Gazebo, follies or to create a screen between two areas of garden. They also displayed a selection of obelisks and a ball finial which make attractive features for patios, walls or flower beds. Robert has a good relationship with local conservation officers, and English Heritage, and as a result they were called in to help with the preservation of some medieval ruins, the purpose and history of which were unknown. The consolidation of this particular ruin was very successful and made some of the hidden archaeology more obvious. The site is still active and a full survey is to be carried out by English Heritage. As well as working to preserve the built heritage of England the Company also carry out works such as new builds for private clients and Local Authorities. At present they are working on a Palladian Style new build in South Gloucestershire and constructing new extensions to a Georgian fronted Rectory near Cheltenham.

Robert Fleming Masonry and Conservation 65 Pickwick Road, Corsham, Wiltshire SN13 9BS Telephone: 07970 446294 E-mail: robfleming.stone@hotmail.com

From their workshop in Castle Combe they are able to supply masonry units such as window and door surrounds, copings, cornices, chimney stacks and all other architectural stone detailing from any architectural period. The majority of stones in which they work are the Bath Stones, Limpley Stoke or Hartham Park but they are able to work in many other types of stone. In order to promote the use of architectural natural stone in the garden they decided to take a Trade stand at the Malvern Show in 2007. They were delighted to be awarded a Silver Gilt Medal for their display.

Dashers Ltd

Suppliers of cooked and frozen uncooked handmade Cornish pasties Dashers Ltd proudly announce the launch of their new web-site at www.dasherspasties.com. The web site makes ordering from their delicious range of pies and pasties, whether frozen uncooked, or cooked, pasties and pastry products, just the click of a mouse away, and is the next stage in the company’s expansion of the wholesale side of their business. Dashers offer free delivery to local pubs, clubs and food outlets. They also have a popular retail shop in the town centre of Torpoint in Cornwall for supply to the general public.

Their pasties and pastry products are all hand-made using the traditional Cornish recipe combined with their own special blend of seasoning and their own shortcrust pastry, and when they say “hand made” they really mean it, every pastry circle and every crimp is done by hand at Dashers, even mixing the meat and vegetables together and placing the mixture on to the pastry, is all done by hand, and on their own premises. The work is all done by local employees, and over the years they have developed their own distinctive brand with the emphasis being on first class quality and flavour.

Dashers are based in Torpoint and manufacture high quality Cornish Pasties and pastry products which they supply across the Plymouth, Torpoint and Rame Peninsula area. They use the finest quality Cornish meat and vegetables in their steak pasties. Rather than cutting corners and using the inferior cuts of meat found in many so called Cornish pasties, they only use the highest quality Cornish skirt steak, sourced in and around the Truro area and sent to a local butcher for preparation. Dashers choose only the leanest meat and have it delivered fresh every day. All the vegetables they use are grown and prepared within ten miles of Torpoint.

Chunk are especially proud of their pork pies which are made with local fresh ingredients, a proper hot water pastry and just the right amount of jelly, they are truly delicious. Chunk is not allowed to call their steak and vegetable pasties “Cornish Pasties” because they are not made in Cornwall! Since inception in 2006 Chunk has spent 4 years developing their range and getting the hunks and hunkettes ready to grow the business. They only use local free range meat, poultry and vegetables, and their pies and pasties are prepared using traditional cooking methods. They even make all their own stocks, gravies and pastry, creating flavours that have been lost from modern, commercially, mass produced foods. At Chunk they believe that consumers still want “proper food” and despite the recession are willing to pay that little bit more for it, relishing simple, tasty natural food from Devon. Customers are initially attracted by the funky packaging and branding but once they have tasted these premium quality products they return for them again and again; your sales figures will speak for themselves.

If you would like to sample any of their products, or if you are a wholesaler looking for a great new range for your September brochure, give the hunks and hunkettes at Chunk a call. Look out for “Events at Chunk” their travelling trade stand which appears at lots of shows, festivals and trade fairs, during July, August and September, when you can try the products for yourself. Chunk is still expanding on the present site. Constant investment has been taking place, and they are currently expanding into new office space, while continuing the refurbishment of the busy bakery. Award winning artisan bakery, Great Taste Awards 2010, Taste of The West 2010 Great Taste Gold 3* award winners 2011 and have reached the finals in the Baking Industry Awards 2011. Bread-making at The Thoughtful Bread Company is a labour of love. Their bread is made from the most seasonal, and locally sourced or foraged ingredients, fresh each and every day.

offer a range of seasonal breads, including, Wild Garlic, Nettle and Chive, Potato and Rosemary using mashed potatoes in the mix, or Cheddar Gorge Vintage made with genuine Vintage Cheddar from the only proper cheese maker still working in Cheddar. They are also have plans to develop an exciting range of gluten-free breads to sit alongside their existing offerings which include yeast free, wheat free and dairy-free, as well as vegan options.

Founded just two years ago by Duncan Glendinning, who has a passion for “real food, made by traditional methods, in the most ecologically friendly way possible, the company has grown organically from a two man operation, in a 400 square foot space on the farm, to six people working in a purpose built bakery of 1200 square feet, based on the popular Farrington’s Farm Shop land.

Their relentless drive for quality and products of real pedigree have attracted some lucrative customers through the restaurants and cafes they supply up to Michelin level and have scooped numerous awards since they first opened shop in recognition of the quality of the products and the environmental and ethical stance they adhere to, day in day out.

At The Thoughtful Bread Company they believe that it’s not just their bread that will put a smile on your face; it’s the people, the ethics and their environmentally-friendly approach to business that they adhere to each and every day.

Visit their quirky “flagship store, a wooden hut in Green Park Station in Bath, part of the Farmers Market open Tuesdays through to Saturdays, or the farm shop at Farrington Farm Shop at their base at Farrington Gurney.

Bread, the natural way Free from improvers and additives, with extended proving times, and made using only the freshest of ingredients, all sourced within a 40-mile radius from quality local producers, home grown or foraged by themselves their bread is a healthier, tastier alternative. They source most of their flours, which are made from British wheat, wherever possible, from Shipton Mill in South Gloucestershire. Many of their recipes also use rye, or spelt, a very old and more digestible variety of wheat. Their Spelt, Walnut and Raisin loaf is just one of the special breads on offer. At The Thoughtful Bread Company they depend on the seasons to yield a variety of locally-grown produce and a bounty of foraged goods from the wild larder. This is why their breads will vary throughout the year in tune with nature - the way it should be. More variety is introduced from their “barter shop in Bath, where people trade their surplus fresh produce for bread; last Christmas’s mince pies used barter apples for the mincemeat filling!

4131:Butts Farmshop 18/08/2011 12:23 Page 37

The Butts Farm was purchased in 1990 by Gary Wallace and Judy Hancox/Wallace with the purpose of opening the farm to the public and promoting rare breeds of British livestock. Opened to the public in 1991, it is family run and provides a real hands-on farm experience with many activities for young and old to participate in. You can cuddle bunnies, milk goats, bottle feed lambs and kids, feed chickens and collect the eggs, ride a pony, even groom a donkey. The farm also offers the opportunity for schools and colleges to bring their classes for educational visits to the farm to learn how the meat gets from “Farm to Plate”. Judy's ability to produce high quality livestock and her broad knowledge of food and cooking combined with Gary's expertise as a Master Butcher, their enthusiasm and good public and media relations, made it a natural and logical progression to build a farm shop at The Butts Farm. The award winning Farm Shop (also a Rick Stein Food Hero) is dedicated to promoting the exceptional benefits of Rare Breed meat, home-cured bacon, superb sausages and local vegetables, eggs and home produce. All their stock is raised traditionally in a natural stress-free environment which produces meat of outstanding quality and flavour. Although the Farm deals mostly with the public, with the Shop it’s both the public and the catering trade as they supply many local and London-based restaurants. Gary also runs one day basic butchery courses. Since taking over the farm, Judy has expanded her existing flock of Rare Breed sheep, goats and poultry with the addition of cattle and pigs and her Gloucestershire Old Spot pig herd is one of very few in the UK that carry the new EU TSG accreditation. In 1999 Judy and Gary started the very popular Cotswold Gourmet Mail Order Meats catering for the large number of people throughout the country interested in Rare Breed and traditional meat. In the winter Judy has time to attend local farmers markets where again the quality of the meat, poultry and eggs produced at The Butts Farm has been proven by its popularity.

The Butts Farm has not only become an extremely popular and informative tourist attraction but also a source of high quality breeding stock. The highlight of the Rare Breed Survival Trust’s year is the annual Show and Sale. Stock from the Butts Farm has never failed to gain at least one Best of Breed award in the last 6 years.

DUNSTAPLE Farm ice cream is really hot stuff - and that’s not just because it’s produced curry and chilli flavours. The extraordinary varieties were special one-off batches, created at the request of a customer for a special occasion and, some would say, an acquired taste. But the client loved them - and that’s a far more familiar scenario for this company whose delicious award-winning ices are the cream of the West Country crop, winning awards at some of the region’s biggest shows, such as the Bath and West and Devon County. “You’d eat it and because it was cold think it was alright and then,, about two minutes later you’d get a sudden kick of chilli,” remembers Dunstaple Farm’s Jo James of the sp-icy dish.

But she and husband Tom love getting suggestions for unusual varieties to add to their staggering collection of 40 different flavours - with their own two children often providing a rich source of inspiration. Chunky Ginger, Irish Chocolate Cream, White Chocolate Avalanche, Lemon Merringue, Butterscotch Crunch, Black and Blue are just some of the tastes being savoured by ice cream gourmets. Others proving impossible to lick in the competition stakes include Raspberry Pavolova, Clotted Cream Vanilla, Black and Blue Crumble, Strawberry and Double Choc - all of which have garnered the plaudits of competition judges - and prestigious awards.

Proof indeed that Tom and Jo’s recipe for their ice creams is also one for success: fresh whole milk from his brother’s cows, produced on the family-run farm in Holsworthy, clotted and double cream from local dairies and only using ingredients, including flavourings and colours, all of the highest quality and natural. Well apart from the Bubble Gum flavour. ‘Out of all the different flavours we do that’s the only one - we have not been able to find a natural blue colouring,” sighs Jo. “We are still looking and are really keen to find it.” Awards, sought-after tastes, an ever-increasing customer base and an enviable reputation as one of the best ice cream makers in the region - it’s all a far cry from when Tom and Jo bought an existing small ice cream dairy back in October 1999. “It was on a farm where Tom used to work, but he was doing long hours for someone else and thought it would be nice to work for himself,” she remembers. “We had two small children but he didn’t get to see them very often so we bought the business, moved it to our farm and have been making ice cream ever since.” They started out with 17 customers and zero experience of making ice cream but through a process of trial and error, willingness to try different things and natural progression, built it into the successful award-winning company it is today. “We didn’t go into it just to win awards,” adds Jo. “We just reached a point when we thought ‘we’ve got certain standards here now’ and entered a competition to just see how we’d get on. But winning prizes is quite exciting!”

They keep an active presence at trade shows and word-ofmouth recommendations are proving a powerful source of new custom but the company’s reputation is also spreading due to its location in such a popular tourist destination “People holiday here and when they get home, email us to ask where they can buy our ice cream,” says Jo. So hopes for the future include expanding the distribution area to other parts of the country - and there’s always a new taste to test; although Apple Crumble won’t be making it through.

“It tasted delicious but the apple flavouring is quite delicate and a lot was needed to make it work so it was just too expensive to produce,” rues Jo. “It was a shame because it was really quite lovely but Tom is always experimenting and customers often ask us if we’ve tried making something so we’ll have a go - and if it’s economical to do so then we’ll take it on board.” For further information about Dunstaple Farm Dairy Ice Cream and its products, plus a list of where to buy, visit www.dunstaple.co.uk.

GOODFELLOWS DESPITE being set just a step from the famous Gothic Wells Cathedral, at the centre of the landlocked historic city, Goodfellows is creating a stir in gastronomic circles - for its seafood.

in some of the greatest kitchens in Europe, has already achieved two red AA rosettes and placed on three occasions in The Times’ Top 10 Restaurants, while Goodfellows scored highly in the Good Food Guide, was Somerset Restaurant of the Year in 2006 and won Best Restaurant in this year’s inaugural Taste of Somerset Awards.

It’s not just the fresh fish, caught off the Devon and Cornwall coasts, that are bringing foodies flocking - they’re also coming to taste the exquisite treats served up in the downstairs patisserie or to tuck in to a little bit of Europe found in the Sadler Street Café.

The Sadler Street Café is where is a little bit of Europe come to Wells, with the Europeans’ passion for good food, beverages and patisserie complemented by flexible hours and a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

The two-storey operation - connected by a spiral staircase - is run by former Charlton house Michelin-starred chef Adam Fellows and his wife Martine. No matter what time of day, Goodfellows can provide the appropriate dining experience to satisfy every appetite. You can look in for tea and chocolate truffles or a fruit tart at the patisserie, where Martine presides and pastry chef Catherine, creates magic; linger over a bouillabaisse in the café, or make an occasion of lunch or dinner at Goodfellows Seafood Restaurant – the main event.

The style of food is classic French country cooking, with strong flavours; here is where you might find smoked salmon with homemade rye bread to start, and follow that with Cassoulet Touloussain – duck confit with haricot beans, Toulouse sausage and pancetta – or perhaps warm goat’s cheese tart with Niçoise vegetables will take your fancy. Being open in the evenings, its simple meat and gamedominated menu provides a superb contrast to Goodfellows and with the newly-redesigned patisserie being part of the café, there’s a huge choice of sweets. Here too are a wealth of goodies, available to eat in or take out, including savoury snacks: éclairs, fruit bavarois, chocolate tarts and truffles, and cakes which are made to order, as well as an extensive range of wholemeal, spelt and rye breads croissant and Danish pastries. If you are looking for some fresh and outstanding food, Goodfellows is the place to go.

Upstairs, gourmets will find quiet and private dining, while downstairs is bursting with an exciting theatrical ambience, where the focus is on a central open kitchen where Adam and his team display and amaze with their talents. All the dishes in the seafood restaurant are cooked to order to original recipes with a modern European template. Textures are light and the flavours intense, with everything designed to complement the natural taste of wonderful local fish and seafood.

At 5 Sadler Street, Goodfellows is open Tuesdays, noon-2pm; Wednesdays-Saturdays, noon-2pm and 6.30pm-9.30pm (last orders); The patisserie and café opening times: Mondays and Tuesdays, 8.30am-5pm; Wednesdays to Saturdays, 8.30am5pm, 6pm-10pm.

The Mill Tea & Dining Room Splendid, authentic English food

There is a hidden jewel in the picturesque town of Lyme Regis, and those lovers of good food in the know, make regular visits to the award winning, quirky family run restaurant hidden away in the back corner of a courtyard under some stairs. The location in the oldest recorded part of Lyme Regis, in a listed mill building on the bank of the river Lym is beautiful and historically interesting, but what makes this small restaurant worth searching out is the splendid authentic English food prepared from scratch using only the best local produce by Anthony Mc Namara the chef. The area around Lyme Regis had been developing a reputation for good food, but there was a lack of really good restaurants serving excellent food in an upmarket setting. The restaurant is owned and run by Eleanor Bursey who has 12 years experience in the catering industry, her mother Ailsa and the well renowned chef, Anthony Mc Namara, who has 18 years experience working for many famous names as a private chef and in some of the best known and most prestigious restaurants in the country, this is his first independent venture. When Eleanor met Anthony they decided to open their own restaurant, and in September 2009 The Mill Tea and Dining Room was born.

ingredients. You will find toast and dripping on the menu and such traditional dishes as lamb faggots and potted rabbit. Eleanor is always in the restaurant, to ensure that the service is always consistent, and Anthony is always in the kitchen to ensure that the food, likewise, is always consistent. They carry an interesting range of both fine French wines and some local ones which perfectly compliment the local ingredients of Anthony’s dishes. Eleanor, Anthony and Ailsa have worked hard to build the restaurant’s reputation. As the entrance is almost completely hidden, it was important to impress the locals in order to build regular custom, rather than relying on the tourist trade, for the word to spread. The high standards they maintain have seen their reputation grow and clients book some time ahead to ensure a table for a special occasion Anthony and Eleanor’s hard work and commitment to high standards really paid off this year when they were awarded The Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year in the South-West 2011, they are absolutely thrilled, and would like to thank everyone who voted for them. The restaurant is open for morning tea, coffee and elevenses, proper lunches or something lighter, afternoon tea with real tea served in proper china tea cups, and their splendid dinners. Also open on Sundays, their Sunday lunches are considered the best in the area.

The historic Pipers Inn situated on the A39 between Street and Ashcott has been extending warm hospitality for over 400 years. The Inn is a landmark for many travellers to Mid-Somerset, and was recently named by the distillers of Famous Grouse whiskey as one of the most famous pubs in England. Although it is no longer a staging post for young couples eloping to Gretna Green, and their anxious parents in search of them, it still offers a friendly welcome to all comers. The Pipers Inn now comprises two buildings of contrasting architectural styles. A former inn on this site called The Castle appears to have been rebuilt, possibly in the late 17th century. Pipers Inn is recorded in 1723 and there are a number of romantic and prosaic reasons given for the name. Whatever the truth, an inn has stood on this site for over 400 years. About 200 years ago an imposing house was added to the side of the existing building to form the present day frontage. No attempt was made to match the architectural styling or roof lines of the original building and hence the rather odd appearance of the building today. The Pipers Inn is situated within easy reach of many local attractions, what better way to round off a day visiting Wookey Hole Caves, or one of the nearby RSPB Nature Reserves, Shapwick Heath or Ham wall RSPB Reserve to see the evening roosting of several million starlings, than to settle down in the cosy bar of The Pipers Inn with a pre dinner drink while choosing from the extensive dinner menu. Or perhaps you would prefer to call in for a delicious lunch or bar snack to recruit your strength before an afternoon’s shopping at Clark’s Village in Street, or site seeing in Glastonbury or the Cathedral City of Wells. Comfortable Bed and Breakfast accommodation is available for those making a longer stay in the area.

All food is freshly prepared, and the management and chefs refuse to compromise on offering good wholesome home cooked meals. The chefs are proud to offer a modern and varied menu, ranging from traditional favourites to interesting offerings with a global flavour. The Pipers Inn prides itself on offering good value for money, and is so particular about cleanliness that it has been awarded 5 stars for hygiene by Sedgemoor District Council. The Inn is open 7 days a week for food, with the new Sunday Carvery offering traditional roasts, a vegetarian option, and home made desserts, proving very popular. Wednesdays is Steak Night, The Piper’s steaks are flame grilled and served with a choice of delicious home made sauces. The Inn holds regular themed dining evenings and is well able to cater for parties and larger functions. Coaches and tour parties are welcome by prior arrangement. Families will be made warmly welcome, and on fine days there is an outdoor play area for the children to enjoy, set in the large gardens. The Pipers Inn has extensive car parking to accommodate the traveller of to-day, as most visitors, sadly no longer arrive by stage coach.

4465 & 4297:Ferry Boat 18/08/2011 13:45 Page 52

The Ferryboat Inn’s “farm to plate” philosophy means they want little or nothing to come between guests and the produce they serve - well, maybe except one of the best views in the South West while they wait to dine. Situated on the waterfront of Helford Passage, in Cornwall, means this 300 year-old hostelry is perfectly placed for beachside alfresco dining on sunny days and warm evenings while those on the south-facing terrace can drink in the stunning river panorama. On chilly winter nights the recently updated interior of The Ferryboat Inn, with its slate floor, wooden beams and open fireplace, is the cosiest place to be and where many love to make themselves at home in the main bar, either in front of the flickering flames or relaxing with papers on the comfy sofas. But patrons don’t just come to enjoy one of Cornwall’s most breathtaking locations - Frenchman’s Creek, the inspiration for Daphne Du Maurier’s famous novel is near - they come to feast from the inn’s menu of simply served, locally sourced seafood specialities and home-made pub classics. The inn is owned by Wright Brothers, which not only operates two successful oyster houses in London, provides oyster and seafood bars at events around the country, and runs a highly

successful wholesale division supplying many of London’s finest restaurants and hotel with high-quality British and French oysters, it cultivates and harvests more than five million native and pacific oysters a year at the Duchy of Cornwall Oyster Farm, part of the private estate of the Prince of Wales and one of the largest oyster farms in the UK. Situated not far from the Ferryboat, here is where it sells wet fish and other great Cornish seafood landed daily by the local fishing communities and delivers to all its outlets, including the inn’s kitchen, which is run by Ben Lightfoot, formerly of The Sticky Prawn on Flushing Quay.

He and his team of chefs now provide diners with a little bit of culinary theatre, shucking oysters and preparing seafood at the oyster bar, formerly the servery. For anyone wanting something a little more intimate, there’s a cosy dining room tucked behind the main bar. The Richmond Public House and Kitchen The Richmond Public House and Kitchen on Gordon Road, Clifton, is entering an exciting new period in its life, having recently (February 2011) been taken over by the owner of the Picture House on Whiteladies Road. The Richmond will join a group of very successful sites, as part of the Vintage group of public houses which besides the Picture House East Restaurant also include Tiki Bar, The King’s Arms and Kingsdown Wine Vaults. At last, The Richmond looks likely to fulfil its potential as a lively neighbourhood pub, offering good food in a welcoming ambience, with a list of fun promotions and exciting events. The pub has been refurbished generating a classic pub feeling with open fires and period fittings, in keeping with its original character. The new and highly professional management team know from experience what it takes to make a venue successful, so the future for The Richmond is looking bright. They have a very reasonably priced and tempting British menu on offer, they say “We boast the Roast with the Moast”; all dishes are freshly cooked and the new head chef will be introducing some great dishes of his own so look out for the new menus. There is a split style bar so if you prefer you can have a relaxed dining experience, or simply “chow down” in the bar. Alongside the usual range of drinks that you would expect from your “local”, there is an excellent wine list and a good choice of well-kept real ales. Early eaters (between 4 -7pm) will find special deals, and the pub regularly has exceptional promotions on food and wines.

Among some of the events at the pub organised in association with Lionsdrinkbellinis, are wine and cheese nights, ice-cream tasting, world potato night, a vintage tea party, a sausage festival, and for the calorie-carefree a Winter Pudding night! The Richmond runs regular quiz nights, open mic comedy nights, and live music evenings. You will also find traditional pub games, pool, darts and board games. For a really good time day or evening, bring the family, Bailey joked that “we allow dogs as long as they are calm and well behaved, and children until 9pm so long as they are on a leash – yes, in that order!”

The Richmond is available for private hire for events and functions, ring Bailey or Emma on 01179 237542 / www.therichmondclifton.co.uk for more information, or just to find out what’s new.

The AA award of three stars for the inn’s guest accommodation is testimony to the high standards of service and hospitality. The recognition follows fantastic feedback from the many guests who have enjoyed the comforts of the three contemporary rooms. Cornish fishing company Ocean fish are swimming against the tide, and expanding into new larger processing facilities. Construction is under way for their new 2750 square metre factory extension, due to be completed in December 2011. Ocean fish are wholesalers and boat owners supplying all fish indigenous to West Country waters to supermarkets and wholesalers throughout Europe. Ocean fish are proud to hold the MSC chain of custody accreditations for Cornish Mackerel and Sardine fisheries.

The company was founded in 1989 by the Lakeman family, who come from a fishing background in Mevagissey which stretches back several generations. The dire straits of the Cornish fishing industry and the demise of the Mevagissey fisherman’s co-operative motivated them to launch a company which would provide a market for the catches of local fishermen in Mevagissey, and generate employment in the area. From these aspirational but modest beginning Ocean fish has now grown to be a major player in the South West fishing industry, turning over in excess of £16m. Their rapid growth having led to them to outgrow their current premises of 1300 square metres, the decision was made to expand at the existing site which is located only 200 metres from the main A30 trunk road as this favourable location makes onward distribution throughout the UK very easy. As part of the growth in the market, Ocean fish have become a substantial employer in the town with 70 staff, all trained to the exceptionally high standard this company demands. The factory operates to the globally recognized “British Retail Consortium” grade A standard.

Ocean Fish prides itself on its efficiency of order processing and its ability to meet its customers many and varied requirements; and attributes its success to the commitment of its staff to meet customer’s expectations and to the freshness and quality of the fish it supplies. The company is looking forward to a continued period of growth, Colin Langley says “We feel the market is very buoyant at the moment and public awareness of the health benefits of a fish diet is increasing.” As part of capitalizing on the increased public consumption of fish, Ocean fish have purchased a 30 acre lake in Mid Cornwall with a view to rearing farmed trout. The company is to be congratulated on recognizing and seizing opportunities against the background of general decline in the British fishing industry.

Keith Cheesewright Caravans Ltd Keith Cheesewright Ltd is the professional and friendly face of caravan and mobile home purchase and transportation. With over 35 years of success in the industry, they are the place to go to. When Keith Cheesewright started up his own company, he was building on the experience gained from helping his father in the transportation of caravans and mobile homes. Arthur Cheesewright, Keith’s father, bought a jeep to move a mobile café on to Mawgam Porth near Newquay in 1952; this developed into a full time business during the summer months, and led to him starting Trewhiddle Holiday Estate, St Austell. The family, including Keith and Pat, his mother, all worked together to develop a thriving business from a run down manor surrounded by empty fields. In 1973 Keith decided to start up his own business from scratch, buying, selling and transporting mobile homes, and static caravans, with a small bank loan and the total support of his mother, Pat. The company which started from these modest beginnings has grown into a huge concern within the caravan world in Cornwall. The company have widest choice of 10 and 12 feet wide caravans for sale in the South West. At Keith Cheesewright Caravans they sell static caravans and used mobile homes from Cornwall and around the West Country. They stock new caravans and mobile homes from companies such as Cosalt, Willerby, ABI, and Atlas, among others. The company’s transportation side now operates throughout the UK and parts of Europe, using their extensive experience of over 35 years, to ensure the smoothest and most reliable service possible. Keith Cheesewright has on-site workshop facilities and a strong team who will ensure that all repairs and preparation work is completed, before transportation. A thorough check of all parts of the chassis, jacklegs and A-frames will be carried out in order to ensure the safety and

integrity of the structure. The caravan will then be delivered for export or the home market by Keith Cheesewright Ltd’s own specialised transporters, so as to eliminate any problems that might otherwise arise in transport. They have vast experience and specialised equipment for placing caravans of all sizes in some of the trickiest locations, and are specialise in abnormal wide loads. They are fully trained & registered with the local authorities to do the job without the need for third party involvement, so keeping the time and the cost down. Whatever your requirements, a holiday home or even temporary accommodation during building work, Keith Cheesewright Ltd will have the expertise needed to provide and transport the right mobile home or caravan for you to its new location throughout most of Europe and the UK. Keith Cheesewright himself still maintains an extremely “hands-on” approach, bringing a no-nonsense approach to problem solving and scheduling, driving the specialist vehicles and the basic day to day manual work. It is this personal involvement of the owner in all aspects of the business that makes Keith Cheesewright Ltd so special.

Her agile handling, quick acceleration and fast transition to planing speeds mean she performs like a sport cruiser yet her expansive light-filled saloon and three well proportioned, beautifully detailed en-suite cabins suggest a vessel of a much larger scale. It was an unsuccessful search for jewellery to complement the purchase of a crisp new shirt that, ultimately, changed Rachel Larcombe’s life. The Exeter cufflinks fan could only find pieces for men - so went home and not only made her own, she set up Lady in Links, an online boutique which turns these historically male accessories into sought-after female luxuries.

Her designs, offering a whole new way to wear jewellery, are already proving a hit, not just with professional women who require a smart wardrobe on a daily basis, but with male buyers too, delighted at having found the perfect gift for their partners. Now about to mark its first year in business with orders already coming from as far as Moscow and New York and Rachel in discussions to team up with a popular shirt manufacturer, the prospects for Lady in Links are looking as bright and sparkly as some of its stunning products.

women - professional businesswomen need stylish accessories that are practical and appropriate for the office.” Supported by Women Do Business, a service for Devon women who own a business or who are interested in starting a company, and Business Link, she underwent training on website design, social media and marketing before launching Lady in Links last July. The collection includes a number of designs unique to Lady in Links, covering different styles, materials - crystals, sterling silver, freshwater pearls and marcasite - and price bands, while the silver items are British-made. “I believe women are always looking for something new and exciting to wear,” says Rachel, who collected a Women Do Business Personal Development Award at a gala dinner last May. She uses only the finest materials and craftsmanship to design the pieces, and with prices ranging from £20 to mid £100s several pieces coming with matching earrings, it means customers can own stylish, quality jewellery at an affordable price. Combined with Lady in Links’s fast delivery, plush gift boxes, high attention to detail, and personal customer service, it’s no wonder demand for Rachel’s designs is hotter than ever. “I hope to design and introduce a collection of stylish women’s cuffed shirts to compliment the cufflinks as I am always being asked about shirts and I’m in discussions with a company to potentially partner with this” says Rachel. “I have also recently been incredibly fortunate to receive the support of a business mentor, and we are working on my Christmas campaign - which is very exciting!”

To see and order from Rachel’s collection, go to www.ladies-cufflinks.com. You can also follow on Facebook and Twitter. To make an enquiry telephone 0845 6048 162 or email thecufflinklady@ladyinlinks.com

Rachel’s designs offer a fresh take on the idea of lady cufflinks type those words into Google and you’ll pretty much get a list of designs featuring ladies AS cufflinks, all aimed at the male market. "I always wondered why it was only men who were allowed to wear cufflinks,” muses the 25 year-old whose love of cufflinks stems from her late father who founded a men's cufflink company in the 1980s. “With my background and ambition to design jewellery and run my own business, I decided to create a cufflink collection for

It ’s Cool to be an Old Bag In 2005 Sally Hurst was sitting on a beach in Devon, with her 5 children, surrounded by carrier bags, a scenario many mothers will recognise! She decided that what was needed was a strong, practical, fun beach bag, so she went home and designed one!

The Old Bag Company, The Old Bag Store, South Hams Business Park, Churchstow, Kingsbridge, Devon TQ7 3QH Telephone: 01548 853444

With so many bag companies out there Sally wanted to be different, it was important that her products shouldn’t be just well designed they needed to be well made and affordable. Sally also wanted a name to emphasis the individuality of the company that would really stand out, so when her husband Nick came up with the name “The Old Bag Company”, it seemed ideal; the ranges are named after Sally’s four girls, son Will awaits the launch of a bag for the guys. Each bag has a label inside with a message from them giving the bags a unique personality. All the bags are made of canvas, light weight, waterproof inside and machine washable. They have lots of pockets inside and out,( designed by a woman, for a woman,) making them very organised practical Old Bags. Since the first range of beach bags Sally has designed a range of every day bags, leather handbags, baby-changing bags and accessories, to include hand made purses, beach towels and mugs. Sally’s bags have won awards and so has the company, Sally has been awarded Business Woman of The Year 2011 by The Women Do Business Programme, a fantastic accolade to the success of her business. Sally’s main route to market is through independent retailers of which she has over 400 countrywide, and includes The Eden Project, Fenwicks, RNLI, Condor Ferries, Lakeland, P&O Caribbean Cruise Ships, and Cunard Cruise Ships. Their web-site www.theoldbagcompany.com is rapidly becoming their major market place, with a thriving on-line brand and its own fan club with the slogan, “It’s Cool to be an Old Bag.”

Aerosaurus Balloons Aerosaurus Balloons Ltd is flying high over the South West of England providing champagne hot air balloon rides over some of the most beautiful scenery in England. Flying from a selection of hand picked sites in Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Cornwall and Wiltshire all flights are for an hour and include champagne. The whole experience lasts 3 – 4 hours, from the initial excitement of watching the balloon being inflated to touch down. Aerosaurus Balloons is the largest West Country Hot Air Balloon flight operator, and with 23 years experience in this industry you are in the safe hands of the owners, the Street family, Aurthur, Rosemary and Charlie, two of whom are fully qualified Commercial Balloon Pilots. Over the years the company has flown over 70,000 passengers of all ages and types. A flight in a hot air balloon consistently rates among the top ten things people have always wanted to do, and Aerosaurus Balloons has a wide range of gift suggestions to fulfil the dreams of your friends and family, including an in-flight photo as a memento. From an exclusive two person flight in one of their smaller balloons, lovely for a marriage proposal, or for the bride and groom to “go away” after their wedding reception, to one of the larger balloons to carry a family party, or group of friends, Aerosaurus Balloons can cater for any occasion. Corporate hospitality is an important part of their business; a hot air balloon flight is a wonderful way to entertain clients, reward employees and add a real “Wow” factor to any campaign. With multiple balloons of varying sizes, they can provide exclusive tailored flights, team building experiences and mass balloon launches for up to 100 of your guests at one time. You can even have your name on the balloon!

Although the major part of the business is their regular scheduled dawn and dusk flights, popular with locals and visitors, Aerosaurus Balloons is regularly called upon for film work, both for the crews, flying cameramen and for photo shoots. Their membership of Balloons Over Britain means that they can offer customers the opportunity to fly in areas outside the South West, all over the UK. Recently Aerosaurus Balloons organised the Tiverton Balloon Festival, which was visited by over 12,000 people, during the two days. More than 50 balloons took to the skies on the evening of Friday the 20th and morning of the 21st and there was also an evening hot air balloon “Night Glow” where 14 balloons gave a display choreographed to music. Further events were planned for the Sunday but unfortunately, gale force winds in the area caused these to be cancelled. Despite this disappointment, the event was very successful and raised over £10,000 for the nominated charities, BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance Appeal and Exeter Leukaemia Fund. Aerosaurus Balloons is also involved in the annual West Country Balloon Fiesta in Devon, and has recently won a bid for the Balloon Event Management of Northern Ireland’s biggest ever ballooning festival to be held in August this year just outside Belfast.

banshee events SOMETIMES it’s just the cupcake served up during the break that makes a difference - but Banshee Events knows it’s the small details that make a big impact.

With the Banshee Events flair for creativity and attention to the tiniest detail, every event is memorable, even for those with tight budgets.

The company’s eye for detail and boundless creativity ensures customers return again and again, be it for a team building event, a corporate day, product launch or a private gathering. They know Banshee Events will organise something special.

“The small details make an event special,” says Amanda. “For example, if it’s a team-building event it might be prizes at the end of the day or cupcakes at break time. All these little things make a big difference to the people that are taking part.”

Owners Tony and Amanda Quinn bring a combined 30 years’ event planning to everything they do and every one of their project reflects that wealth of expertise. We can help to make any event go without a hitch, to budget and with style and finesse,” says Amanda.

“When budgets are cut they are the first to go and one of the talents we’ve developed is devising ways of making people still feel they’re part of a special day while saving money. We’ve put a lot of effort into providing this kind of service.”

“We don’t do “boxes on the shelf-type packages, that’s not how we work at all. “We work with customers to find out exactly what their objectives are and deliver exactly what they’re requesting, rather than fit them in to a selection of supplied packages. “That’s what keeps people coming back. About 80% of our business is repeat business because customers know we can come up with something different for the next time based on what we already know about them, what their internal culture’s like, their budget and how they like to do business.” Tony and Amanda launched Banshee Events in 2005 and the company’s success has seen it become a force to be reckoned with on the events planning scene. Based at Winterbourne Stoke, near Salisbury, and with two members of staff and an army of trusted freelancers, Banshee Events is responsible for a wealth of functions taking place across the country, from Birmingham to Cornwall. Most recently it completed a project with London communications agency, Imagination, to devise and deliver a series of roadshows around the country for Mazda UK, while other clients include Waitrose, Barclays, the Crown Prosecution Service, Business Link and many other SMEs and private individuals. “We offer a personal, hands-on ideas and production service, providing full end-to-end management of an event or we can produce individual elements while working closely with other providers or in-house teams to ensure a seamless match,” says Amanda.

Networking events, conferences, exhibitions, award ceremonies, private and corporate parties, product launches, team building, hospitality, international events, incentives, public events, charity events, strategy days plus a wedding or few Banshee Events makes them all unique. “We do event management because we love it and believe this shows through in the final event,” says Amanda. “Let us take the strain, so you can sit back and be a guest at your own event.”

4361:North Devon Media 19/08/2011 12:13 Page 72

The friendly, approachable face of PR, Debbie Manners, has won her first award. The award, from Women Do Business, is for “Best Growing Business, 2011” for her company ND Media. Debbie worked for the BBC for 15 years, including Radio 4, working as a Senior Producer in the main Radio Newsroom in London, and subsequently as a freelance reporter for programmes including Farming Today and Woman’s Hour. She has experience at all levels of BBC Radio journalism, Debbie has also worked in BBC regional television and for a wide range of magazines and publications. She started her own business by working freelance, offering PR to small companies, in the form of press releases, newsletters, editorials, leaflets, and flyers. Her goal was to offer affordable, accessible and jargon free PR to the type of small North Devon business that might be tentative about employing a large PR company. As the business grew, Debbie realised that it was time to give her business a name and in 2008 N D Media (short for North Devon Media) came of age. N D Media is proud of its reputation for honesty and integrity, if Debbie feels that the client’s idea won’t work, she will say so, and tactfully suggest an alternative. She will then encourage her clients to look at their business in a different way and to think about what they are doing that could be newsworthy, and how they could use that to promote their business. As a result N D Media has a very high success rate of getting press releases published by newspapers – about 80%. Debbie is especially proud that almost all her PR clients have stayed with her from the start of their association, and continue to use her services. Her client base is as varied as her approach; she deals with a wide range of small local businesses, many of whom have come to her via personal recommendation, including providers of holiday accommodation, retailers, complementary health, interiors, gardens, estate agents, etc. ( ! $*# (, !! +$#

A couple of years ago N D Media started to also offer business and web videos, with Debbie’s husband, Philip Loat, doing the filming. Philip has over 20 years experience as a reporter and cameraman, working for various organisations including Reuters and the BBC, both in the UK and overseas. With so much experience in broadcasting and journalism, far more than most video production companies, they can put together a film from start to finish, with a well written script and beautifully filmed and edited pictures. The journalism input makes them really stand out because they can demonstrate a clear understanding of the best way to put across a company’s message on film. Debbie works mainly from her office at home, meeting her PR clients in their own places of work, or in the relaxed environment of a coffee shop, which helps to build a strong rapport with her clients; for filming projects they meet on location. Debbie has developed strong links with local and regional papers and magazines, and has become more involved with other businesses through helping to run the South Molton Women Do Business Group. She has this advice for women running their own businesses. “Being self employed is very satisfying, when you achieve something you know that it is through your own efforts. Believe in your product and yourself.”

Centre wins gold in Green Award In April 2011The Taunton Conference Centre based at Somerset College, Taunton, won the coveted Gold Green Tourism Award – the top level in the national scheme to promote sustainability and green issues within tourism. It was awarded by the Green Tourism Business Scheme, validated by the tourism body Visit Britain and assessed against rigorous criteria ranging from energy and water efficiency to waste management and more. “We are thrilled, especially as the gold award is very difficult to achieve and we won it first time,” said Conference Manager Sam McIntyre. “We have worked hard to ensure we’re sustainable by analysing all processes from recycling policies to the food we use, from using renewable energy and reducing our carbon emissions to sourcing local food and supporting the local economy.” The Taunton Conference Centre includes two venues, the main Conference Centre and the unique Genesis Centre. This is a renewable energy training centre for the South West, a light and spacious environment that also demonstrates sustainable construction such as cob, straw and earth materials. The Centre offers up to seven flexible meeting rooms to hire for meetings, exhibitions and banquets in a sustainably aware environment. The venues cater for numbers from 10 to 200, and include everything from a conference hall to small meeting rooms, locally sourced catering and state of the art technology.

held at Somerset College in Taunton. KEG aims to help businesses in the South West develop knowledge and expertise in sustainable construction and green technology and is funded by the South West European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and South West Regional Development Agency. The networking event was the first since the project was launched, to help companies interested in the green economy forge links with complementary members across the region. The facilities at the Taunton Conference Centre are suitable for any organisation which runs any type of event, from training to product launches. The Centre offers a professional service while retaining its own unique character, through the excellent personal service it provides. Conference facilities which carry such evident green credentials are becoming increasing relevant to major companies such as Clarks International and Nissan who have both held events at the Centre. The Taunton Conference Centre is launching its new website in 2011, in order to engage effectively with the corporate market.

The Conference and Enterprise Centre, as it was then known, opened for business in July 2003. Its aim was to provide the College and the local community with a valuable resource in the promotion of enterprise skills, link Higher Education students with local companies for work experience and research projects, and provides a venue to hold large group lectures, events and exhibitions. The Taunton Conference Centre has gone from being a College facility that has a large room in it that would be good for conferences to a conference centre in its own right that offers some of the best facilities in the South West. The Centre was the ideal venue for a meeting on May 19th when a group of West Country companies gathered at the Centre for the first network meeting of businesses involved in the £750,000 Knowledge Exchange at Genesis (KEG) project,
