August 1, 2020 Dear BB&N Community, This is a letter that no Head of School would have ever contemplated having to write. Yet, after months of planning, I am eager to share with you our plan to open BB&N in a Safe, Smart, and Resilient manner.

Safe. Our first priority is the safety of every member of our community. I believe that our plan outlines a myriad of ways we plan to keep our community as safe as possible. From enhanced safety protocols, to the ability to adapt our approach based on the trajectory of the pandemic, to putting our students in cohorts to limit exposure, we have developed a plan that prioritizes safety in all ways. As a day school, safety must be a shared responsibility between school and home.

Smart. I am excited about the many aspects of this plan that demonstrate creative solutions to the

challenges facing us. As you will see, we are reconfiguring spaces throughout all four of our campus to support in-person learning. We created the Knight Corps, comprised of up to 20 members, to support teaching and learning. We are pleased to offer Knight School in the Hybrid model to support families who need their child(ren) to attend school during Remote days. We have adapted schedules, added supports, developed new athletic offerings, and will provide lunch for all students B-12.

Resilient. We are a community committed to helping each other thrive and grow, even in difficult times. This plan allows for us to move easily between three models and to ensure all of our students are receiving an excellent education regardless of the model we employ. We are also strengthening our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion during a time that demands our continued focus on becoming an anti-racist institution. I believe we are poised to reopen and stay open in a manner that will help build the culture of our school.

I am proud of the work that this document represents. None of this would have been possible without the efforts of our families, our students, our teachers, our Board of Trustees, and our Leadership team.

HEALTH & SAFETY The Role of Families and Community Members The safety of our community is a shared responsibility and will require a partnership with our students, faculty and staff, and families, based on a foundation of mutual trust. The first key safety measure that any student, faculty, or staff member can take is to stay home when they are not feeling well. There will be times this year when we will need to ask our community to adhere to new protocols, and it will be the combined responsibility of all community members to comply with these state and school recommendations and policies. Parents and guardians, we particularly ask you to join us in the responsibility of keeping our community as safe as possible.

Primary Safety Protocols Face Coverings All students and adults are required to wear face coverings. Mask breaks within an appropriate setting and distance will be built into the daily schedule with frequency based on age/grade level. BB&N will provide each student and adult with two washable face coverings.

Students and adults should wear these, or their own, face coverings to school every day.

Disposable masks will be available as needed. Mask break rules and schedules will be available after state guidance is released later this summer and before school opens. Medical exceptions and alternatives to face covering will be made on a case-by-case basis and in consultation with the student or adult’s treating physician, the campus nurse, and/or human resources. Students will maintain at least a 6-foot distance when not wearing masks for mask breaks or for activities such as eating lunch.

Physical Distancing Students and adults will maintain physical distancing in and out of the classrooms in accordance with state guidance. Movement on campus will be managed through both the use of staggered timing and direction. Staggered timing will be used during drop-off, pick-up, movement between classes, and in scheduling transitions to and from outdoor spaces. Directional hallways will also be used to decrease contact and promote distancing.

Classroom configurations have been designed to adhere to guidance on distance and to be directional (desks facing the same direction). Faculty space for teaching in the classroom has been measured and marked. Larger spaces such as common areas or community rooms have been redesigned for distanced teaching spaces.

Student Cohorts Each campus has been organized by buildings, classrooms, and cohort groupings in a pattern that reduces both the number of student-to-student and teacher-to-student socially distanced contacts each day. Faculty and specialist schedules have been adjusted to accommodate fewer cross-grade assignments to the extent feasible. Spaces have been redesigned and assigned to decrease the number of cohorts using any given space. Bathrooms have been assigned to cohorts as well. Per state guidelines, students will be given assigned seating in all classroom spaces as well as in other study rooms, with desks and other furniture organized directionally.

Some on-campus programming, such as affinity groups and wellness or counseling programming, might require the participation of students from more than one cohort.

In these instances, faculty and staff will ensure that this programming occurs outside, is 4

appropriately supervised, and that students are wearing face coverings and are spaced at least six feet apart. Any exceptions to these four conditions must get prior approval from the Health and Safety Committee. Any faculty members who need to teach across cohorts will observe stringent hand hygiene and remasking protocols..

Hand Hygiene Handwashing and hand sanitizing will be required for students and adults throughout the school day. In accordance with state guidelines, students and adults will be required to practice hand hygiene when they arrive at school, before eating, before putting on and taking off masks, and before dismissal. Handwashing and hand sanitizing schedules will be built into the daily schedule for each grade. In addition, students and adults will have access to handwashing at any time in the assigned bathroom area for their cohort as well as access to hand sanitizer provided in every classroom.

Staying Home When Not Well Students and adults are required to stay home if they are not feeling well. Students and adults are also required to stay home if they have had close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19. Families and employees will need to follow a daily health check and symptom screening. Students who display symptoms while at school will be moved to a specific room designed for medical isolation by the school nurse and sent home.

Employees who display symptoms while at school will notify their supervisor for coverage and go home immediately.

Enhanced Health Policies and Protocols Several school health and student handbook policies and protocols have been enhanced or revised in response to state guidelines and best practice to reduce the spread of COVID-19. These policies and protocols include return to school from illness, attendance, response to COVID-19 in and out of school, restriction of visitors on campus, travel restrictions, suspended field trips and open campus, teaching practices to reduce shared materials, and enhanced cleaning protocols. Policies will continue to be enhanced or created based on state guidance released over the summer and updated accordingly. The 2020-2021 student/family handbook will be available in mid-August.

Students will be organized into cohorts that reduce the number of contacts and minimize the mixing of students to the extent feasible.

Handwashing removes pathogens from the surface of the hands.

While handwashing with soap and water is the best option, alcoholbased hand sanitizer (at least 60 percent ethanol or at least 70 percent isopropanol) may be utilized when handwashing is not available. Handwashing and hand sanitizing will be required for students and adults throughout the school day.

Enhanced Health Policies and Protocols School health and handbook policies and protocols will be enhanced and enforced to prevent the spread of and to respond to COVID-19.

COVID-19 COVID-19 is the disease caused by the new coronavirus that emerged in December 2019. Symptoms include cough, fever or chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle or body aches, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, and congestion or runny nose. COVID-19 can be severe, and may cause death. The new coronavirus can be spread from person to person. It is diagnosed with a laboratory test. There is no COVID-19 vaccine yet.

HEALTH & SAFETY Additional Health Measures Alongside the primary strategies noted on the prior two pages, we have also implemented a robust set of additional procedures and practices to enhance the safety of our community: Air Circulation and Ventilation We recognize the importance of ventilation and air cleaning to create safe environments that will reduce risk with an airborne virus. When we started our planning for this school year last May, one of the first things we did was to conduct a thorough evaluation of air filtration, ventilation, and air handling systems in every single room across the 23 facilities on our four campuses. We partnered closely in this work with our longtime consultant and mechanical contractor, Cox Engineering.

The firm is widely known for their expertise in HVAC best practices, and they have far-reaching experience with hospitals, schools, and other public institutions.

Our team has upgraded air filters to the recommended MERV13 standard; these filters will be replaced every two months. Routine maintenance has been performed on all HVAC systems to verify the operation of all air handling and ventilation equipment. In addition, all HVAC systems have been inspected, cleaned, and disinfected where possible. We have made a significant investment to install 160 HEPA air purifiers in order to align the ventilation and air filtration in the rooms across our four campuses with best practices. Our building automation systems, under normal circumstances, typically would be set to non-occupied during nighttime hours. This fall, however, we are changing our protocol to keep these systems running non-stop to allow for continuous ventilation.

Additionally, upon the start of school, the facilities staff will work with faculty to encourage the opening of windows and doors whenever possible to further increase air flow and introduce even more fresh air into learning spaces. Facilities staff have also made adjustments to windows’ range of motion to allow for increased ventilation. Weather permitting, teachers will be encouraged to conduct classes outside in the newly configured outdoor learning spaces across all campuses.

Cleaning Practices Our janitorial services are provided by a combination of internal staff and the national firm Cushman and Wakefield. All shared spaces across campuses will be cleaned and disinfected at least daily and high-touch surfaces will be cleaned multiple times per day on a regular schedule. Special attention will be given to classroom surfaces, bathrooms, door handles, shared objects, and high-traffic areas.

Disinfecting supplies will be available for use in each classroom. Where disinfectants are used, products will be from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved list of disinfectants to use against COVID-19.

The school is also installing clear plexiglass shields in areas where there is frequent face-to-face interaction (front desks, librarians’ desks, business office, division offices, etc.). To avoid crowding in bathrooms and locker rooms, capacities will be limited. Water fountains will not be in use this year, but touchless water filling stations will still be accessible and regularly disinfected. We encourage students to bring their own water bottles to campus in an effort to promote hydration, encourage sustainable practices, and limit the spread of germs.

HEALTH & SAFETY Signage Physical and digital signage will be placed throughout the campuses to provide reminders about safe hygiene practices. Floor markers for proper physical distancing will also create a healthier campus community for all.

Response to COVID-19 in School BB&N’s COVID Response Team includes the school nurses and administrators. This team will work with the Department of Public Health to support all efforts for identifying, quarantining, and contact tracing should a student or adult at school become symptomatic or test positive for COVID-19. Massachusetts has released an initial set of protocols for a school response to COVID-19. Families and employees will receive instruction from BB&N before the start of school on how and when to report symptoms or confirmation of illness to the school to support these efforts to prevent spread. As these guidelines emerge, we will continue to refine our practices in partnership with our consulting physician, Dr. Richard Goldstein of Boston Children’s Hospital.

Health & Counseling Services One of the primary goals of the Health Services Department is to support the educational process by enhancing the health of all children within the community. The school nurses will continue to offer their usual services to our families, including the promotion of healthy lifestyles, health care counseling and guidance to students and their families, identification of health concerns by observation, and assessment of needs and appropriate care, medication management, and immunization verification according to state guidelines.

LEARNING & TEACHING OVERVIEW

Our Three Learning Models

In response to the ever-changing nature of this pandemic, we have created three learning models for the 2020-2021 school year. Each of these models is guided by our desire to balance:

All on Campus

Hybrid

All Remote

All students B-12 are invited to come to campus for instruction each day; remote learning is available for those unable to come to campus for health or other concerns.

Reduced numbers of students will learn on campus if distancing guidance requires 6-foot spacing. Grades B-6 are fully on campus daily. Grades 7-12 come to campus in two cohorts that alternate on-campus and remote learning. Fulltime remote learning remains available for anyone not coming to campus.

All students are learning from home, should the campus need to close.

All on Campus If guidance from federal, state, and local experts determines that 3-to-6 foot separation between individuals in any classroom or other school setting is safe, this would allow for attendance on campus of all BB&N students B-12. Student interactions would be limited with a focus on creating separate cohorts by grade. Accommodations to maximize safe attendance would pertain to all aspects of campus operations, including but not limited to: room configurations, face coverings, hand hygiene, restrictions on large-group gatherings, different procedures for lunch and snacks, and enhanced sanitation and disinfection. Remote learning technologies and strategies would still be used in certain circumstances.

Hybrid The Hybrid approach allows us to maintain a minimum of 6-foot separation between students in our classrooms. The Hybrid approach is defined by on-campus learning for a reduced number of students per day, combined with remote learning for the remainder of students. The Hybrid approach would feature B-6 students attending campus each day, while students in Grades 7-12 would alternate between on-campus learning days and remote learning days based on their grade. The school’s 46 Belmont Street building will be adapted to become Knight School, which will provide support for students who need it during remote learning days (see more at right). We have also planned for a “LS Super Hybrid” model, in which students in Grades B-2 would learn on campus in very small groups, due to their developmental needs, while students in Grades 3-12 would be engaged in remote learning.

All Remote If it is determined that on-campus attendance cannot be safely conducted, then 100% remote learning will be enacted for as long as those conditions apply. Enhancements to the Spring 2020 remote learning pilot include: universal 1:1 device access for all students and teachers, advances in curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments, more robust schedules, increased health and wellness programming, and improved and expanded extracurricular options.

LEARNING & TEACHING Expectations We believe it is more likely than not that BB&N will need to engage in more than one of the models for at least some interval during the coming school year. That is why we are building complete plans for all three models now.

A flexible and adaptable mindset will be essential for all members of our community to maintain for the 20202021 school year.

If circumstances allow, BB&N will endeavor to provide a minimum of one week of lead time concerning transition from its current model to one of the other two models during the 2020-2021 school year. Exceptions will apply if safety concerns demand a more immediate transition.

All Students Have the Option to Learn Remotely In all of these models, students have the ability to access learning remotely. We are cognizant of the fact that each family has unique circumstances that inform the decision about how to access school. We are committed to ensuring that all students are able to learn either remotely or in-person. Specifically, one responsibility of our Knight Corps members will be to support students who are learning remotely when the rest of the class is accessing in-person instruction. You will be asked to indicate the likelihood of your child(ren) needing to study remotely when others are on campus in the accompanying survey.

Knight School We are aware that for many of our students and families, remote learning from home presents a challenge. In response, we have created Knight School at 46 Belmont Street, BB&N's administrative facility in Watertown. Only available during the hybrid model, this program allows students in Grades 7-12 to come to 46 Belmont on their “remote days.� We will do our best to accommodate demand based upon the social distancing restrictions that will be required. Participating students will be separated by grade, thus remaining in cohort, and will be able to access remote learning under the supervision of our Knight Corps members. You will be asked to indicate the likelihood of your child(ren) accessing Knight School in the accompanying survey.

Cohorts In each of our on-campus models, students will spend the majority of their day with their cohort (students in their classroom or grade) with minimal physical contact with others outside of their classroom or grade.

Students in different grades will not come in contact with each other while indoors. Specialist teachers will travel to the students and work with students in their cohorts to minimize movement throughout the campus.

In addition, specialists will only see two grade levels per week to minimize contact.

Instruction In each of the LS learning models, the most important points of emphasis as we facilitate effective learning in the models are: academic continuity, social-emotional health and well-being, the creation of meaningful academic experiences, and developmental appropriateness.

The Lower School is fortunate to have a campus that can accommodate all students B-6 on campus for both the All on Campus and the Hybrid models. When on campus, classroom instruction will happen in the typical manner while adhering to the appropriate distance and safety guidelines. Our intent is to provide a full range of programming and learning opportunities as in a typical school year while ensuring that students progress through all the standards and practices necessary for their specific grade level. Additionally, teachers will have to adjust some instructional practices to maintain physical distance and minimize the sharing of materials. Each student will be given a set of school materials that is theirs and theirs alone.

In our Remote model, students will engage in both synchronous and asynchronous sessions throughout the day.

For synchronous sessions, students will join Zoom sessions set up and led by their teachers. For asynchronous sessions, students will engage independently in teacher-created academic experiences. Across all learning models, BB&N librarians will continue to support students by providing digital access to resources and databases.

Schedules When on campus, the Lower School schedule will resemble those of past years: Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM and Wednesday 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with possible staggering of arrival and departure times. The academic schedule will build in time to accommodate mask breaks and outdoor recess breaks.

When learning remotely, Grades 3-6 will be meeting from roughly 8:00 AM-1:00 PM. Grades B-2 will end earlier.

All students will be given breaks throughout the day. In addition, due to developmental needs, differences will exist among the schedules for the following grade level clusters: B-K, 1-2, and 3-6. Morning care/early-morning drop-off will not be offered this year.

LEARNING & TEACHING AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL All on Campus • All students are on the 80 Sparks Street campus, spaced 3-to-6 feet apart • Students will be in daily contact only with classmates in their same grade, along with their teachers • Class sizes will be similar to a normal school year, typically ranging between 9 and 16 students per class • Some classrooms will be reconfigured to accommodate 3-to-6-foot distancing and to allow for grade-specific classrooms • No large-group gatherings will occur during the academic day

Cohorts During the academic day while learning on campus, Middle School students will come into contact only with classmates of their own grade, as well as teachers. In addition, we have created smaller cohorts within each grade. There will be no cross-grade, in-person activities or gatherings indoors during the academic day.

Instruction We understand that the Middle School years are crucial to students’ academic, social, physical, and emotional growth, and especially given the current environment, we believe that providing a space for consistent engagement with both peers and faculty is critical for student well-being. Regardless of the model, the Middle School program will continue to foster a nurturing community with an engaging and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Advisors are vital in supporting students as they learn to navigate their time at the Middle School, and in our home/school partnership advisors also serve as the first contact for families. With our emphasis on a whole-student approach as well as the importance of student-faculty connection, we foster self-advocacy and independence in learning. Across all learning models, BB&N librarians will continue to support students by providing digital access to resources and databases.

Schedules A consistent schedule will exist across all three Middle School learning models, with the academic day running from approximately 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Advisor/advisee time begins each day, followed by a rotating academic block schedule and ending with athletics or Flex time: advisory, wellness, or additional programming, depending on the day.

LEARNING & TEACHING AT THE UPPER SCHOOL All on Campus • All students are on campus, spaced 3-to-6 feet apart in the main academic complex, and 6 feet apart in the Nicholas Athletic Center (NAC) » Grade 9-11 students will each be assigned to one-third of the main academic complex » Grade 12 students will have all classes in the NAC • Class sizes will be similar to a normal school year, typically ranging between 12 and 16 students per class • While on campus, students will be assigned to Zones so that they are in daily contact with only their cohort (classmates in their grade), and to specific spaces within their Zones for free blocks (see Page 15 for Zone renderings) • Students will not be allowed to leave campus and then return back to school on the same day • No large-group gatherings such as X-block assemblies will occur

Cohorts In both of our models that involve time on campus, students will spend the academic day coming into contact only with classmates in their own grade, along with their teachers. The four different grades will have a unique Zone on campus, and within these Zones students will further be assigned specific spaces during their free blocks to limit the number of contacts each individual is exposed to on a given day. Some programming, such as affinity groups and wellness or counseling programming, might require the participation of more than one cohort. In these instances, faculty and staff will ensure that this programming occurs outside, is appropriately supervised, students are wearing masks, and students are at least 6 feet apart.

Instruction In all three of the Upper School learning models, we will stay true to the hallmarks that have long defined our program: the depth and strength of our academic offerings, as well as the strong connections that are forged between students and teachers and from peer to peer. Across all three models, we are committed to maintaining the entire slate of our curriculum, including all of our elective classes. In addition, all three models feature the class meeting together, either remotely or in person. We will also continue to follow a block schedule in all models, with the instruction lasting 45-to-60 minutes per period. These characteristics will remain consistent threads of the Upper School experience during the coming year, regardless of the model or models in use. BB&N librarians will continue to support students by providing digital access to resources and databases.

All Remote

Schedules The All on Campus model will feature a schedule modeled closely after the Upper School’s regular schedule, with the exception of no X-blocks or lab/conferences. Classes will meet four times per week.

For the Hybrid model, Upper School academic classes will take place on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, with Wednesday being reserved for extra-curricular clubs and team athletics. This allows for the consolidation of teaching time in any one day, enhances cleaning protocols during the week, and provides the opportunity for cross-grade activities at least one day per week.

For the All Remote model, each class will meet synchronously three times per week, with one 60-minute block and two 45-minute blocks. Additional asynchronous work will also be assigned.

The logistics of a hybrid learning environment are not static.

The keys to designing a successful hybrid learning environment are agility and mobility. At BB&N, access to classroom and learning resources can happen anytime, anywhere. Whether in a classroom with their teacher, in a different classroom connecting into the primary classroom, at home connecting into a live classroom, or entirely remote, BB&N students will never be without access to our world-class program.

Regardless of our model in the fall, students and faculty will connect through singular access points that link to a variety of secondary resources for learning. The primary access points for students and faculty are as follows:

Pop-up classrooms have been created to extend access for all students and faculty to ensure effective social distancing practices and accommodate anyone who may be vulnerable due to health-related issues. Pop-up classrooms are equipped with mobile learning stations that allow faculty to either teach live and broadcast out to students, or have students connect into live BB&N classes. Regardless of the learning model that is in effect, BB&N students and faculty will have multiple dynamic avenues for connecting and collaborating.

Grades B-2 SeeSaw Learning Management System: this system is new for our B-2 students and designed for engaging parents, students, and faculty in a singular learning space.

Grades 3-12 Faculty will design classroom pages using the PowerSchool Learning Management System. This will be the primary vehicle with which faculty will share assignments, resources, etc.

Students should check in daily to their classroom PowerSchool page for updates and assignments.

• In addition, all faculty members are being furnished with iPads to support dynamic, engaging lesson design and serve as another tool to engage all students. The iPad will also serve as a way to connect faculty to students no matter where they are physically in the hybrid learning environment.

• BB&N faculty members participated in a Global Online Academy course this summer to support asynchronous lesson design and remote learning assessment tools, among other topics.

• BB&N faculty have access to the recently developed Teaching and Learning in the Remote Classroom website, which offers an array of resources relating to instructional design and technology tools.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS BB&N places a very high value on the social and emotional wellness of every member of our community.

Successfully re-engaging our students, supporting our faculty and staff, fostering a sense of collective responsibility, and creating a solid foundation for learning all depend on concerted attention to social and emotional wellness. To this end, BB&N will provide additional resources for students and families, and for faculty and staff, to enhance their social and emotional resilience, feel a sense of belonging, heal, and thrive.

By organizing our plan around a culture of community and care, we are underscoring a core value that must guide every person living and learning on our campuses—caring for ourselves and for others. As circumstances continue to change, rest assured that we are committed to being flexible, responsive, and willing to adjust our course of action to best support the health and safety of all.

Preparing Your Child for Return to School We believe that returning to school in the fall is important for the well-being of children. As we have experienced, there is a cumulative cost to isolation for children and young adults. We also know that school closure has impacted parents, who are balancing caring for children with their professional responsibilities.

We are partnering with public health officials to make our school as safe as possible and ensure that every student’s well-being is a priority. Throughout the fall, we will continue to assess the social and emotional needs of our students, families, faculty, and staff.

At the start of the school year, we will take the necessary time to adjust to some new routines that are meant to keep everyone healthy. We list here some specific steps you can take with your child(ren) to help prepare them for the transition to school.

• Review what a distance of six feet looks like and practice keeping social distance in public.

• BB&N will provide face coverings for every student, but you should secure a supply of face coverings that are comfortable for your child. Practice wearing 18

them for increased periods of time each day in an effort to normalize them. Discuss proper mask care, including not sharing masks and storing masks carefully.

• Where appropriate, practice being around other people, putting social distancing and face covering measures into practice. Brainstorm ways to safely greet peers and/or faculty from a physical distance.

• Begin conversations with your child about what school might look like based on this reopening plan.

• Encourage good hygiene by modeling washing hands frequently and thoroughly, and avoiding touching the face and eyes.

• Practice coughing into elbows and monitor your child’s temperature on a regular basis.

• Introduce a routine that is more like school the closer we get to September, so that students have fewer adjustments to get used to.

• Watch and listen to your child and be attentive to any changes in their mood or behavior.

• Ask questions and reassure them that the adults in their lives and in their school community are here to care for them.

Support Resources for Students & Families As we reopen school, we recognize the complex and varying ways in which our community members are experiencing the pandemic, including a range of emotions related to stress, anxiety, trauma, loss, and isolation. Our support for students and families will include: • Opportunities for families to share the impact of COVID-19 on students and families, as well as any specific needs they foresee in the 2020-2021 school year.

• Space for students to process feelings through peer-to-peer support systems.

• Support for students whose family members are essential workers.

• Space for students who are coming from communities that have been disproportionately impacted, as well as space for those who want to learn more about how to be supportive.

• Increased focus on the language of emotions and emotional literacy; students may be managing large, unfamiliar emotions and may need support processing.

• Ongoing faculty-facilitated dialogue with students to support coping as things shift and change.

We are developing procedures to address the return to school of students with physical or health impairments who may require additional assistance. Our nurses, counselors, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Global Education (DEIG) Office, and Learning Support team are here and ready to help.

SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL Support Resources for Faculty & Staff

BB&N’s faculty and staff are the backbone of our school and have been no less impacted by the pandemic than our students and families. Caring for the needs of our educators is essential to ensuring that they are able to focus on the work of educating our students. A Social and Emotional Wellness Committee was created during the pandemic to connect with and support faculty and staff. As a result of this initiative, faculty and staff enjoy a range of new wellness resources, including: • Individual and group counseling sessions with mental health professionals

BB&N Information & Training Resource Guide The BB&N Information & Training Resource Guide serves as a useful resource for faculty, staff, parents, and students.

It compiles safety and health information in one easyto-navigate location, offering immediate access to BB&N precautions, policies, and training resources. For example, there are numerous videos about topics such as mask wearing, hand hygiene, and social distancing to assist parents in preparing younger students for safe and healthy behaviors during this time. This guide is continually updated with new information as it becomes available.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND GLOBAL EDUCATION Core Principles We at BB&N acknowledge that, as a society, we are at a pivotal moment in meaningfully addressing centuries of oppression and systematic racism, and prioritizing the work of dismantling racism within our institution. BB&N’s commitment to diversity is integral to the mission and vision of the school. As we plan to reopen BB&N for the new school year, our entire community is committed to ensuring that a range of equity principles are placed at the forefront of the school’s plan, including: • Centering the needs of students, families, employees, and communities who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic (immigrants, essential workers, immunocompromised people, Black & Latinx communities) • Creating equitable learning opportunities for all students • Accommodating employees who may be unable to be physically present on campus

• Continuing to foster meaningful service-learning and community engagement by encouraging advocacy and activism.

• Creating more opportunities for Upper School and Middle School students of color to connect via the Upper to Middle School Connections Program. The goal is to provide historically underrepresented groups of students more opportunities to connect with peers, gain leadership training, and create enriching community initiatives.

• Launching an Alumni/ae & Students of Color Mentorship Program & Speaker Series in partnership with the Alumni/ae Council, Alumni/ae of Color Network, and Alumni/ae Programs. This new initiative aims to provide high school students of color with opportunities to connect with, as well as receive advice and support from, alumni/ae of color.

• New Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) groups will provide a core community experience and equip faculty, staff, and students with the language and skills to turn the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and global education into action.

These include: » SEED for all new hires and members of the Senior Leadership Team » Introduction to SEED for students via a Senior Spring Project seminar.

• Adding to the list of DEIG offerings on the BB&N Hub in partnership with the Professional Development team.

• Infusing a DEI and global perspective throughout our curriculum through examples such as the Lower School partnering with Reimagining Migration and the Middle and Upper Schools partnering with History UnErased.

DEIG Programs for 2020-2021 The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Global Education (DEIG) Office will continue to run all existing student programs, albeit modified in some ways. We aim to continue providing students with a safe, supportive place, and meaningful programming. Our school community’s experience over the past six months has not been monolithic. Many Black students do not feel as though their experiences are acknowledged, reflected, or lifted up. We welcome the opportunity to reflect on the fact that our personal experiences may be different from the experiences of others. We are committed, even during this global health crisis, to continue to strengthen our work toward becoming an anti-racist institution.

This work includes: • Adding to the content, trainings, and interactive spaces on the DEIG pages of the BB&N Learning Hub: Understanding Racism and Becoming Anti-Racist (see right).

ATHLETICS Guiding Principles • The health and safety of B-12 students, faculty, and staff will guide all Athletics Department decisions.

• We recognize the value of athletics and movement as an important component of student life, and we will seek to provide opportunities and seek to balance opportunity with safety.

• We will incorporate stringent health and safety measures in all aspects of our athletics program; consistent with policies established by the state once they become available.

• We recognize that the Athletics Department plan must be durable and able to adapt to changing circumstances.

Physical Education & Athletics This Fall LOWER SCHOOL

MIDDLE SCHOOL

UPPER SCHOOL

Lower School B-5 students will continue to participate in a physical education (PE) program, with modifications made to curriculum and activities to align with state guidelines.

PE activities will take place outdoors with proper physical distancing, cohort, and face covering protocols.

Participation is mandatory for all students.

Grade 6 will participate in athletics separately in their own cohort on the Lower School campus. Additional instructors will be added to support 6th graders.

Middle School students will participate in an outdoor athletics program two days per week at the end of the academic day this Fall. Grades 7 and 8 will separately participate in the program with sport-specific and athletic options at the Upper School athletic fields. Transportation from the Middle School to the Upper School will occur using BB&N buses in a manner that aligns with health and safety guidance. During inclement weather days, MS students will remain at the Middle School, and parents will be notified to pick students up at 80 Sparks Street.

Guidelines for athletics are expected from the Commonwealth during the first week of August. As things stand now, we are hoping some level of competitive team sports will happen for Upper School varsity and junior varsity student-athletes this fall, but this could change. Our hope is that team practices and other athletic activities will occur at a minimum of two days per week. All athletic activities and team practices will take place outdoors.

ATHLETICS Steps for Starting Athletics Upper School Athletics Requirement

• No athletics will occur before September 14; information about tryouts will be sent in coming weeks once state guidelines are established.

BB&N’s typical athletic requirement policy for Upper School students will be modified for the 2020-2021 year. The team requirement will be flexible this year: for 9th and 10th graders, the typical three-team requirement is on hold, and we will not be requiring students to sign up for a team in order to meet this expectation. The Athletics Department will ask students to participate in an activity offered at BB&N or independent from BB&N at least two days per week in the All on Campus and Hybrid learning models, and at least one day a week in the All Remote model. We are committed to offering a range of exciting options to meet this requirement. If students plan to participate in an activity off campus, we ask that a waiver be completed and sent to the Athletics Department as soon as possible. We will continue to track student athletic activities consistent with past practice.

• Comply with state and local health and safety guidelines.

• Identify, configure, and organize practice and play areas to meet safety guidelines.

• Complete mandatory safe-return training for all coaches and student-athletes.

In addition, BB&N will adhere to the following guidelines for the safe return to athletics: • We will consult with our school physician about the use of face coverings during athletic participation, as guidance continues to emerge.

• Adult supervision will be in place for all athletic activities.

• All athletic activities will take place outdoors.

• Locker room use will be modified, if available according to current health and safety policies.

BB&N is committed to providing students with an athletic experience to the fullest extent possible. Although the Independent School League (ISL) has made the decision to cancel league championships, we will continue to work with other independent schools in our league and beyond to schedule games, if possible to do so safely.

Athletics Transportation BB&N will create a transportation plan for each off-campus game which may include bus transportation, family drop-off, and students driving themselves. Note that a student may not drive other non-family member students to games or practices.

Dining

Transportation

This year, for the first time, BB&N will offer snack and lunch options for all students in Grades B-12. Each day, these lunch and snack options will be delivered to students in their classrooms or cohort spaces. Students are also welcome to bring their own food from home, but refrigeration will not be available. Students will not be permitted to share food with others. Food allergy information for all students will be updated and shared with classroom and cohort faculty to ensure the safety of our students with life-threatening allergies. Students should bring a water bottle to school every day so that they can refill it as needed.

The 2020-2021 morning transportation schedule will look similar to the 2019-2020 year.

To the extent possible, buses will leave school buildings at the end of the school day to minimize the amount of wait time for students. The new athletic and extracurricular program will allow for more Upper School students to ride afternoon buses home each day.

BB&N will add two buses to the current morning and afternoon transportation routes to add capacity and separate Lower School students from Middle and Upper School students.

Food will be served in the students’ classrooms or cohort spaces and, weather permitting, students may be allowed to eat outside. Students will be assigned seating during lunch.

Students will be required to follow a hand hygiene schedule and eating spaces will be cleaned before and after snack and lunch. When students’ masks are removed to eat their lunch or snack, they will be required to maintain a distance of 6 feet or more.

Dining staff will prepare individually packed, grab-and-go lunch options using disposable serving containers and utensils. Snacks will consist of individually packed dry snack items (chips, crackers, pretzels, etc.) and washed, wrapped whole fruit selections (apples, oranges, bananas). The NAC Cafe and self-serve buffet service will not be available.

BB&N Dining Services operates in compliance with state and local inspectional agencies.

Dining Services will employ the following safety protocols: • Staff will be required to wear clean aprons, disposable face masks, protective gloves, and practice hand sanitizing procedures throughout the work day.

• Staff will alter typical protocols and transition to just one meal preparation per day.

• The kitchen area, all kitchen surfaces, and equipment will be cleaned and disinfected at regular intervals throughout the day.

• Dining Staff will work at assigned stations to observe safe distancing.

The transportation team will adopt a transportation plan that employs the following minimum safety protocols on buses: • All families will be required to complete the mandatory health check of their child before allowing them to board any BB&N transportation vehicles.

• Students will be required to use hand sanitizer as they enter and exit the bus.

• All students, staff, and drivers will be required to wear a face covering on the bus.

• Assigned seats will be marked to show where students should sit to facilitate maximum distance between children on school buses. Capacity on each bus will not exceed 32% unless state guidelines change.

• Bus windows will remain open as weather permits.

• Buses will be cleaned and sanitized after the completion of the morning and afternoon bus routes.

• Buses will be loaded and unloaded to ensure social distancing during the process.

Families who plan to use the school’s Transportation Program must commit to riding the bus for the full year. However, fees will be billed monthly; if BB&N moves to Fully Remote learning for more than a week at a time, the school will offer pro rata refunds. If the school moves to Hybrid learning, transportation fees will be charged at 60% of the full rate.

Bus service will not be available to non-transportation families before and after school between campuses.

CAMPUS LIFE

Campus Visitor Policy

To ensure the health and safety of our community, all campus facilities are closed to families and visitors until further notice. Only students, faculty, essential staff, and contracted workers are allowed on our campuses. Our outdoor facilities such as play structures and fields are also closed to families and visitors.

Large Group Gatherings Large group gatherings and events in our campus buildings will be canceled or rescheduled until they can be conducted in a safe manner, according to federal and state guidance. Assemblies and other gatherings may take place outside or online, depending on the content of the activity.

Overnight and Field Trips BB&N will need to postpone or cancel any overnight trips scheduled through the end of January. Similarly, no field trips that require bus/car transportation will take place until further notice. Any off-campus activities must be approved in advance by the Campus Director.

After School

Service Learning and Community Engagement

The After School program offers Lower School students a fun, enriching environment that parents can rely on for quality after-school care. The program is made up of two parts: 1) unstructured After Care, and 2) the After School Activities Program (ASAP), which consists of structured enrichment activities and programming. When BB&N is engaged in either the All on Campus or the Hybrid model, the After Care program will run from dismissal to 5:30 PM. Students will be grouped consistent with their homeroom cohorts, to the extent possible. All other safety procedures related to the school day program will be in effect as well. Additional staff will be available during After Care in the event a student must leave early. Most of the After Care program is spent outdoors on the LS campus, weather permitting. To maximize the health and safety of After Care students, no other community members—non-After Care students or parents/caregivers—will be permitted to stay on campus or use the playground/outdoor spaces.

Dismissal from After Care will be held in a central location outside of campus; students will be escorted to their parent or caregiver by a staff member.

BB&N is committed to principled engagement. This Fall, all service learning activities schoolwide will be conducted either virtually or on campus, without the physical presence of participants from outside BB&N. We will continue to uphold the service graduation requirement for Upper School students. However, we will provide greater flexibility in how students can fulfill the requirement, including a new policy focused on meaningful civic engagement, more virtual service opportunities, an online curriculum pairing action with in-depth education, and more.

ASAP classes will be offered to students in a virtual format only this Fall. The full set of offerings and pricing will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Clubs and Extracurricular Activities On all three campuses, we will endeavor to continue to run extracurricular activities and club programming, to the extent possible under health and safety guidelines. Requirements for on-site clubs and activities will include: • Meetings and activities will take place outdoors.

• All meetings and activities will require adult supervision.

• All participants will need to wear masks and remain at least 6 feet apart.

• Club and activity faculty advisors need to apply to the Health & Safety Committee for any case-by-case exemptions.

Performing and Visual Arts State guidance has been released for chorus, singing, brass or woodwind instrument use, dance, and theater: • For chorus, singing, musical theater, and using brass or woodwind instruments, these activities must occur outdoors with at least 10 feet of distance between individuals, with masks encouraged if possible. At this time, these activities are not permitted indoors.

• For non-musical theater, these activities will occur indoors with 6 feet of distance between individuals and masks must be worn.

• We will limit sharing of equipment and materials, and increase cleaning protocols for these activities.

The Arts Departments on all three campuses are dedicated to offer programs that will allow all students the opportunities to explore the arts within a safe and enriching environment through these extraordinary times. With appropriate, creative adjustments, we will offer the usual range of visual and performing arts opportunities that typically make up our program, including in-person and virtual participation in concerts, plays, and film and gallery shows. The engagement level we achieved in the spring—from teacher to student, peer to peer, and students to audience—is an inspiring benchmark for what we can achieve going forward. Our programs will encourage students’ imaginations, engage their senses, and invite communication through personal expression.

uKnighted Community • 30 uKnighted Community Response volunteers contacted every BB&N family to check in • Launched the uKnighted Community Fund to support community members experiencing financial hardship • Increased financial aid to families impacted financially by the pandemic • Coalesced community members around anti-racism work

Beginning last spring and in preparation for the 2020-2021 year, BB&N invested in a wide array of initiatives and purchases to meet the challenge of continuing to offer a first-rate education during the pandemic. Framed by our foremost priorities to keep our community safe, united, and academically engaged, we are leveraging these investments to maximize the experience this year for all members of our community.

Thriving Program • Created Knight School, transforming 46 Belmont Street into a location for students who would benefit from structure and/or supervision during Remote Learning days • Hired up to 20 alumni and others as our new Knights Corps, who will support faculty work schoolwide • Offered wide range of Summer Enrichment Courses for BB&N students at low or no cost.

• Created DEIG Information Hub, featuring a plethora of resources to help build and sustain our communities • Furnished technology for home use to ensure all students have uninterrupted access to their learning experience • Upgraded the lunch program to provide pack-and-go options for all B-12 students • Allocated $50,000 this summer for professional development for faculty to build their expertise in online instruction
