STATEMENT OF PURPOSE In an effort to provide students and families with maximum flexibility during this unique school year, Buckingham Browne & Nichols School is offering BB&N@Home, a remote learning option for those needing or electing to continue their education from home. For as long as necessary, BB&N@Home will be available as a high-quality, parallel option whenever the campus is open for in-person learning. We invite you to learn more about BB&N@Home in order to make an informed choice about which model of learning best suits your family’s needs.

Dear BB&N Community, These are challenging times—for students, for educators, for families, and indeed for our society as a whole. Never in recent memory has the start of a new school year been fraught with so much uncertainty and so much anxiety. August should be, and will be again, a time of excited anticipation about reuniting with friends and teachers, back-to-school preparations, and savoring the last remnants of summer break.

This year, however, with the reality of COVID-19 still looming large, we find ourselves preparing for school in a very different way. As we individually and collectively endeavor to stop the spread of the virus, we must all do our part by adhering to the guidance set forth by the medical experts. We wear masks. We monitor and report our symptoms. We wash our hands vigorously. We limit our contact with large groups of people. We remain six feet apart from one another. And for some, we stay home until we know we are safe to return to the familiar rhythms of life before COVID. At BB&N, we have been working hard since before the end of last school year to prepare for our reopening, and with September 9th/10th just around the corner, we are excited to share our program for meeting the needs of those students, B-12, who will be continuing their learning at home. This document, titled Connected@Home, numerates our schoolwide approaches and campus-specific plans for ensuring that our at-home learners receive developmentally appropriate, engaging, and responsive instruction and that physical location does not dictate the quality of their educational experiences this year.

As the new Chief Learning Officer, I am energized and excited to be joining a community that is proud of its long-standing track record of educational excellence but also committed to deep reflection in service of ongoing improvement. As my own kids, and so many other young people these days so often say, “Let’s go!”

BB&N LEARNING MODELS

OVERVIEW OF BB&N@HOME Depending on the campus, grade level, and subject area, BB&N@Home will take different forms, but all @Home learners will remain connected to their teachers and peers through class time and community events. While this modality of learning will necessarily have different features than BB&N@School, students will nevertheless follow the same curriculum and be poised to advance to the next grade level with their classmates and peers. For details, see the campus-specific descriptions on the following pages.

BB&N@School BB&N@School is the program designed for students who spend part or all of each week on campus. Depending on which model the school is engaged in—All on Campus or Hybrid—and the ages of the students, students will learn on campus from two to five days per week.

Our faculty have focused their professional development this summer on strengthening specific competencies and skills related to remote teaching and learning. This professional development, combined with critical reflection from last year as well as redesigned daily and weekly schedules, set the stage for a robust and engaging academic experience for all students regardless of whether they are learning at home or at school.

Technology The BB&N@Home program utilizes a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning platforms, including Zoom, Seesaw, Google Classroom, and PowerSchool.

Remote Support We have a support team ready to assist with technology issues. BB&N@Home students and families who encounter any technological challenges should email their teacher(s) as well as OnlineLearningHelp@bbns.org. Our technology team will reach out to assist in as timely a manner as possible. We also recommend reviewing this page on our Learning Hub, which explains the technical specifications for the online platforms that BB&N uses.

BB&N@Home BB&N@Home is the program designed for students who engage in learning from home five days per week even as the majority of their peers and teachers are attending school on campus.

Minimum Commitment To allow for appropriate staffing and preparation, students who begin the year in BB&N@Home must remain in this mode for a minimum of four weeks, at which point families will have the option to switch to BB&N@School.

General Guidance/Expectations for @Home Learners Across campuses and classes, we have found that students do best following a regular routine.

BB&N@Home students and students who are learning from home in the hybrid model should adhere to the following guidelines: • Wake up, get out of bed, and ensure that you are dressed in a manner that is appropriate for school.

Virtual BB&N Virtual BB&N describes the scenario where, based on guidance from health experts and government officials, our entire community returns to online teaching and learning, akin to how we concluded the 2019-2020 school year.

• Find a place to work that is comfortable, but not cozy. Remember, if you are using a videoconference for your class, you want to look presentable and be mindful of what the camera picks up in the background.

• If there are other family members in the room, use headphones, if you have them, when you are engaged in a videoconference. Remember to put your microphone on mute when you are not speaking to limit unwanted sound.

• Treat peers and teachers in online learning spaces with the same respect that they would receive in a classroom. Be kind and respectful of all while engaged in a videoconference, on message boards, and collaborative tools.

• Avoid having distracting items around your computer, like food or phones. You should not eat or text during a synchronous session.

Across campuses and classes, we have found that students do best following a regular routine

• Zoom sessions are more productive when we engage in face-to-face conversations and keep our cameras on.

Doing so provides a personal connection for the learning community, allows teachers to better support students, and enhances the engagement between all participants.

• In the event that a student has their camera off, teachers will remind all students that there are times that people will have their cameras off. Students who wish to have their camera off should communicate with the teacher in advance of the class.

If pre-communication does not occur, the teacher will check in later with the student or family assuming good intentions.

• Recording a session or posting sound, video, or images (such as screenshots) of faculty, your peers, or others is NOT allowed during a synchronous session, whether group-based or one-on-one.

• Sharing Zoom invites, links, or passwords with anyone outside your class is not allowed.

• Please remember the policies included in our student handbook apply in the virtual classroom just as they do in the brick-and-mortar classroom.

• If you need to reach out to teachers beyond school hours, you should do so through email, as you normally would.

• If you have any concerns, feel free to reach out to your advisor, grade dean, counselor, or campus director.

LOWER SCHOOL — LS@HOME LS@Home is designed to reinforce the dynamic teaching and learning environment that defines the Lower School.

While it is not possible to replicate exactly what we do in person in an online environment, our values-driven principles guide our LS@Home programming—academic continuity, social and emotional well-being, creation of meaningful academic experiences, and developmental appropriateness. LS@Home students will participate in an engaging program aligned with the academic expectations experiences of their @School peers.

Lower School students benefit from both connection to their peers and consistent support from teachers. The BB&N@ Home Teaching Team is a group of BB&N teachers dedicated to providing instruction to students learning at home. Knight Corps members will also play a supportive role where appropriate. BB&N@Home teachers will be in constant contact with the grade-level teachers to make sure students are progressing through content and staying connected to their @School community. The @Home teacher will provide students feedback on their work and assess students to ensure their progress is moving at an appropriate pace and that they are reaching important academic milestones.

All students will engage in synchronous and asynchronous learning sessions each day. BB&N@Home teachers will interface with students at home throughout the week using various grouping strategies to complement instruction and developmental needs. BB&N@Home students will also participate regularly in Morning Meeting and lunch with their @School classmates and have an opportunity to tune into specific social activities such as Community Time.

When appropriate, @Home students will be able to Zoom into academic sessions with their @School peers. Effective learning looks different across the Lower School based on development. Therefore, as the following schedules indicate, students in upper elementary grades will Zoom in to join their @School peers to access learning. Drawing from our knowledge of teaching, learning, and child development, conversations within our professional learning communities, and deep reflection on the Lower School program last spring, schedules will vary by grade-level bands.

Grade-specific highlights from the schedules include:

Beginners & Kindergarten Beginners and Kindergarten students will be guided through their day by a BB&N@Home teacher. Students will engage in grade-specific skill development as well as mixed grade work/play. Integrated Arts will be included in the schedule and led by a BB&N@Home specialist teacher.

Grades 1 & 2 The Grades 1 and 2 program will prioritize Reading, Writing Development, and Mathematics. Students will have a BB&N@Home Teacher for each of these subjects.

Instruction will take place in mostly small groups and at times in 1:1 sessions. Students will take part in Integrated Arts led by a BB&N@Home specialist teacher.

Grade 3 Students in Grade 3 will work with a BB&N@Home teacher for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Students will take part in Integrated Arts and Technology/Coding led by BB&N@Home specialist teachers.

Grades 4 & 5 Students in Grades 4 and 5 will work with a BB&N@Home teacher for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Students will take part in Integrated Arts and Technology/Coding, as led by BB&N@Home specialist teachers. Students will also Zoom into World Languages with their @School teacher and peers. In addition, Science will be included as a special where students will engage in work asynchronously and also Zoom into their classes with their @School teacher and peers.

Grade 6 Through Zoom, students in Grade 6 will adhere to the daily schedule followed by the bulk of their peers @School. As students move throughout the day, they will be shadowed by an @Home learning liaison whose role will be to facilitate learning for the @Home students.

TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES

We will be furnishing “pop-up� classroom spaces at the Upper School with technology and designs that meet the requirements for hybrid learning and support engagement when students are remote.

We have upgraded all faculty and staff with a pro Zoom account. This provides teachers with more dynamic ways of connecting with students and providing engaging, collaborative lessons regardless of the model that is in effect during the coming year.

We are expanding access to online learning tools and applications to support teaching and learning.

MIDDLE SCHOOL — MS@HOME MS@Home students will largely follow the same schedule and course of studies as their peers who are in school. There will be a blend to their experience. MS@Home students will access the majority of the in-person classes on campus via Zoom, and on remote days all students and teachers will Zoom together for the synchronous learning portion of each class. Where appropriate, and when there is a critical mass of MS@Home students, classes may be created to allow for @Home students to be a specific remote group supported by a dedicated remote teacher. [These potential remote group classes would most likely be scheduled later in the afternoon.]

PowerSchool will be the primary platform from which students will access course syllabi and other course-related materials. Each day will begin with an advisory period and there will be two longer (75-minute) class blocks each week. A schedule with longer class meetings and fewer classes per day creates a calmer pace with fewer daily transitions and preparations for students and greater flexibility for teachers.

MS@Home students will have access to most aspects of the program. As with all MS students, our MS@Home students will begin their day with an Advisor checkin. Each grade will also have a Remote Program Coordinator who will check in with students each day and with parents once a week. As is the case when all students are at school, E block is always available. MS@Home students will be able to arrange for one-on-one meetings with their teachers outside of class time to ask questions and/or receive additional support. Although assessments in some classes may look different for @Home learners, students will continue to be assessed and receive regular feedback on their mastery of the academic material.

MS@Home students are also invited to participate in special Middle School lunch groups, activities, and clubs. All special lunch groups, most activities, and clubs are remote for everyone. Signups will occur through Advisory during opening weeks.

These connections will be essential to students’ academic success as well as social and emotional well-being.

UPPER SCHOOL — US@HOME US@Home students will adhere to the same schedule and course of studies as their peers who are in school. US@Home students will access the in-person classes being held on campus via Zoom, and on remote days, all students and teachers will Zoom together for the synchronous learning portion of each class.

For 2020-2021, mindful of the need for mask and screen breaks, the Upper School schedule has been constructed to allow for 10-minute transitions between classes and an extended lunch break in the middle of the day.

Advisors will be available for additional support for US@Home students, and members of the US@Home teaching team will also be assigned to be in regular contact with US@Home students to assess and refine approaches to meet their needs. All Upper School faculty are committed to designing lessons that are inclusive of and attentive to students Zooming in from home.

With the exception of some Wednesday athletics and arts activities, US@Home students will be full participants in the Upper School program alongside their US@School peers.

TRANSITION TO VIRTUAL BB&N In the event that BB&N needs to migrate completely to the Virtual learning model, BB&N@Home students will seamlessly transition with the rest of the school to online learning. Since the spring, we have been enhancing our virtual learning experience. Our faculty have prioritized online learning in their professional development over the summer and are ready to offer dynamic virtual classroom experiences B-12. We have created schedules that allow for regular live instruction from teachers, asynchronous learning, ample opportunity for community events, and time to focus on social and emotional well-being. Virtual BB&N will incorporate all the digital platforms outlined in the BB&N@Home plan.
