Two BB&N Community Members Honored with CASE District Awards In January, two members of the BB&N community received awards at the CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) District 1 Conference in New York City.

Shelly Nemirovsky, P’16, ’17, ’19, was honored with the organization’s prestigious Distinguished Friend of Education Award for the crucial role she played as chair of BB&N’s Opening Minds Campaign and her role as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. The award is presented to a volunteer who has made outstanding contributions to education and whose extraordinary leadership has influenced an institution’s cause or the cause of education in general.

Woodie Haskins, Assistant Head of School for External Affairs, received the Quarter Century Circle Award, which honors those who have completed 25 years of service for non-profit organizations in

the advancement profession. Haskins’ distinguished and sustained career in support of education reached another venerable landmark this past fall when philanthropic support of BB&N during his 17-year tenure surpassed the $100 million mark.

“The plaudits for Shelly and Woodie are so well deserved,” said Head of School Rebecca T. Upham. “They’ve been so dedicated to the cause of advancing the mission of this incredible school. And, to their credit, each would insist that the spotlight be trained upon the legions of BB&N backers who committed themselves so passionately to making the Opening Minds Campaign such a transformative milestone for the School: from Gary Gut, P’03, the campaign’s first chair, to every one of the 5,453 donors and 1,850 volunteers who were unwavering in their support.”

Senior Wins First Place in National Photo Contest BB&N is proud to share that senior Francesca Santucci was awarded first place in the Drexel University High School Contest Exhibition last semester for her photograph titled “Peaches and Pancetta.”

Santucci’s contemplative still life bested 1,849 other submitted photographs, and earned premier placement among the 140 photos that were chosen to hang in the contest’s resulting exhibit.

“Francesca has made a number of outstanding contemporary still-life photographs,” says photography teacher Parrish Dobson. “The winning photograph is so beautifully subtle in its color—I am very happy that her fine work got the recognition of this prize.”

Sponsored by Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design (one of the 12 schools that make up Drexel University in Philadelphia), the contest is held annually to solicit the best high school photography from around the country.

For her win, Santucci was awarded a cash prize and an invitation to the exhibit’s opening reception. The exhibition ran from February 4 through March 2 in the university’s photography gallery in Philadelphia.

Fourth Grade Gets Energized with Solar-Powered Cars Late last fall, fourth graders at BB&N spent some time exploring the impact we all have on our environment. Students learned about pollution and discussed ways to help such environmental problems.

The fourth graders then spent January making cars from Lego pieces, solar panels purchased at RadioShack, and high-torque motors. Because this was not a kit, the students spent a lot of time designing and constructing their cars. Teamwork and negotiating of ideas were essential to make certain everyone’s voices were heard; platforms had to be built, wheels needed to be attached, and motors had to be secured in such a way that they were able to spin on an axle.

A third of the students were able to get their cars to work, and were bursting with ideas and tips to share so next year’s fourth graders could be even more successful. Although not all teams were able to build a working car, everyone was so invested in the project that one team’s success was the entire class’ pride.

“The thing I liked most about this project was racing,” said Caeden Bright. “I got to see our car move and that made me proud. I learned that everyone has their own ideas and if you put them all together it makes a wonderful car!”

Middle School Actors Delight in Guys and Dolls This spring, the Middle School Big Room was transformed into early-1950s New York City for a performance of Guys and Dolls. The students took on the characters of gangsters, gamblers, missionary workers, and lounge singers in a wonderful rendition of Abe Burrow and Jo Swerling’s renowned musical.

Both romantic and comedic, Guys and Dolls portrays tough questions like what makes someone a sinner or a saint, and is it possible to change someone?

Directed by drama teacher Christa Crewdson, and supported by musical director Kathi Gellar, the cast of 20 seventh and eighth graders performed the famous musical numbers such as Luck Be a Lady Tonight and Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat spot on. The vibrant costumes and set design made the audience feel as if they really were in the colorful world of underground gambling matches and the bustling streets of Times Square.

Students Take on Italian Accents in US Musical

During the Upper School winter performance of Do I Hear a Waltz?, the actors spoke such wonderful Italian, as well as English with Italian accents, that the audience felt as though they were practically in Italy. Set in Venice in 1964, the Arthur Laurents’ play tells the story of Leona Samish, a single, middle-aged woman in search of romance who hopes to find it on her trip to Italy.

Eva Murray ’13, who played Leona, did a fantastic job conveying her character’s trust issues and insecurities, while Nate McLeod ’13 played Renato, Leona’s love interest. The actors inspired bouts of laughter during lighthearted numbers such as No Understand, and imparted sincerity during We’re Gonna Be All Right.

Directed by theater teacher Mark Lindberg, the 30-person cast performed an astounding 17 musical numbers backed by a nine-person band directed by chamber music and orchestra teacher Brian Reasoner. In addition, the set design replicating the famed Rialto Bridge completed the theater’s Venetian transformation.

Breanne Duffy ’01 x 1 x After earning her A.B. in Visual Art and History of Art and Architecture from Brown University, Breanne continued her study of fine art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Her graduate studies focused on the creation of new aesthetics inspired by ruptured urban environments.

Combining Old Master painting, digital imaging, and screen printing, her mixed media artworks form an aggressive harmony between the classic and contemporary. After returning to Boston to work at an educational technology company, Breanne displayed work both at BB&N and in an independent show alongside BB&N Upper School art teacher John Norton. One of her mixed media pieces recently won a contest sponsored by a non-profit theater company, LiveWire Chicago. As the winner, her artwork will serve as the inspiration for ten short plays, submitted by playwrights from around the world and performed in Chicago this June. www.breanneduffy.com Eric Hamilton ’80, Producer for NBC’s Olympics website x 2 x “Like many of us, while growing up I pined for the arrival of an Olympic year, when we would all glue ourselves to the television for two weeks, devouring every moment. But it never seemed like enough. Now, as luck and technology would have it, I’m at NBCOlympics.com, at the center of an online video operation that this summer will comprise thousands of hours over the 17 days of the Olympics. It’s the smorgasbord I could only imagine as a kid.

“I come from a traditional sports/TV documentary background, but I’ve found producing online content to be liberating. The online video world is horizonless, free from the bounds of channels, or even time. (Miss a rowing race when it’s live at 5:00 am? Watch it on-demand when you wake up.) And online audiences prefer less-produced, “primary source” content; so we experiment, searching for Olympian moments in little-known sports, and little-known perspectives on the best-known events. For example, four years ago in Beijing, when Jason Lezak swam an otherworldly anchor leg of the 4x100 freestyle relay to beat the favored team from France, we decided to show the entire relay from underwater. You can actually see the swimmers’ faces and bodies, and suddenly you feel like you’re inside their world. And seeing their effort is the essence of the Olympics to me. Of all those hours of coverage, every second is some athlete’s moment of truth. To help reveal those moments is a great privilege...and I still devour every minute.

“NBC’s Olympic website launches in April, roughly 100 days from the beginning of the Games, but a small selection of videos from Beijing are available now on the site (including that underwater 4x100).” www.nbcolympics.com Darius Scott ’79, Resolution Jazz Group x 3 x In 1994, pianist Darius Scott, having been schooled on the bandstand through diverse experiences with some of the finest musicians in Maryland and Washington, DC, also wanted to develop his own musical presentation. This desire marked the inception of his Resolution Jazz Group, through which he explores his love of straight-ahead jazz. Darius’ repertoire and playing style are strongly influenced by artists like Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, Red Garland, and Wynton Kelly. He performs his own compositions and jazz standards, often as The Resolution Trio, in nightclubs, coffee houses, and private parties, creating an uplifting mood and grabbing audiences through the music. www.resolution-group.com Ann Landis McLaughlin ’47, A Trial in Summer – a novel x 4 x Ann’s seventh novel was published in the spring of 2011. Lorie Bronson, an idealistic college freshman, arrives in San Francisco in the summer of 1939 with her father, who is the judge in the deportation trial of a longshoreman and labor leader. San Francisco is full of contrasts, from the luxuries of Nob Hill, where the family is staying, to the dangerous docks that Lorie explores. Lorie misses her dead mother and resents her father’s new wife. A passionate photographer, Lorie disobeys her father and goes down to the docks to photograph longshoremen at work and in strikes. She meets Dave Rafferty, who says he is a longshoreman, and Lorie talks to him about the trial. But Dave turns out to be a company spy who steals her camera and endangers both the trial and her father’s career. In surviving her own trial during the long summer, Lorie learns about labor and social justice and achieves a more mature relationship with her father and a clearer sense of herself. www.annmclaughlinwriting.com

Virginia Biggar ’81, Sweater Queen: May Gruber and the Rise of Pandora Industries x 5 x Ginny was a writer and producer on the film Sweater Queen: May Gruber and the Rise of Pandora Industries. As a former reporter for National Public Radio in Los Angeles and Washington, Ginney covered breaking and feature stories, including the Clinton impeachment trial, film merchandising, and the OJ Simpson civil trial. She also authored a history of one of the oldest girls’ camps in Maine, It’s Hats Off to Alford Lake! 100 Summers of Voices, Friendship and Community. She makes the team as a marketing ploy by the internet-millionaire owner, and ends up surprising everyone, including herself. Dara Kosberg ’96 had no idea what to expect the first time she walked into an inner-city New Orleans elementary school as a brand-new member of Teach for America. But at the very least, she figured her classroom would have walls.

“The school was built in the 1970s as part of this freespace initiative, but that was when they had a quarter of the students,” she says. “So, we had two floors with about 10 classrooms and 300 kids sharing each floor.

The teachers just marked off their space with furniture.

They literally had classrooms back to back where you would share the blackboard with a teacher on the other side. It was chaos.”

As a first-time teacher at Phoenix’s Agua Fria High School this year, Sarah Stanton ’07 at least has her own, physical classroom. But her Teach for America training hadn’t quite covered how to handle 36 students by herself, half of whom have Special Education needs, including an autistic student, or are English as a Second Language learners.

“I have everything from sophomores who are at a firstgrade reading level to students who are at a posthigh school reading level, and sort of everything in between,” she says.

Then there’s 2004 grad Nina Cronan’s story. A few weeks into her Teach for America assignment in the South Bronx, her high school students declared class dismissed. Within minutes they were chucking desks and chairs in the air and out the windows as if she were invisible.

“You look at the clock and say, ‘I have 35 more minutes before the bell rings. Forget about teaching them; how am I going to keep them all alive?’” she remembers.

Cronan, Stanton, and Kosberg’s experiences are nothing new for anyone familiar with Teach for America, which places thousands of rookie teachers into some of the worst-performing and most-deprived schools across the country each year. No one hides the fact that it’s education in the trenches, and that TFA members are expected to face incredible obstacles. Often, all by themselves.

“The way they described it to me was, we’re putting you in a vessel, and we’re putting you out to sea,” says Kosberg, who taught in New Orleans from 2000 to 2002. “There is that element that you are on your own to do this.”

The job tests novice teachers’ endurance, patience, creativity, and passion on a daily basis, but somehow the majority of TFA members meet the challenge, including BB&N’s graduates. Cronan wanted to quit the day her class rioted, but found strength to keep pushing. Eventually she did break through, not only becoming their favorite teacher, but earning such trust and respect that the sophomores who tossed furniture in her class, two years later, asked Cronan to be their graduation day speaker.

“We were all crying at the graduation; they were crying, I was crying. We really went through a lot that year,” says Cronan, who became a regular faculty member at her school once her Teach for America commitment ended.

“There are other students I’m close with. But those were

the students who saw me at my worst, and I saw them at their worst, and we saw each other at our best. We just came a long way.”

“Out to sea” All three women joined Teach for America within days of graduating college, partly out of their desire to correct social injustices, partly because of the impact teachers had made on their own lives, both at BB&N and in college. “I was hard-pressed at the time to think of another way I could make that big a difference in someone else’s life,” Kosberg says.

Cronan, an English major at Princeton, had little teaching experience outside of tutoring students in after-school programs. Kosberg, a studio art major at Georgetown, had spent a handful of days volunteering at a Washington, DC, charter school. And Stanton, a Spanish and government major who also went to Georgetown, had tutored underprivileged children briefly during several trips to Honduras as a volunteer.

After a brief Teach for America summer boot camp each woman was handed her own classroom—and the real learning began. Woeful facilities and discipline issues were the most jarring revelations, but the bigger shock for each teacher was realizing just how far behind her students were, and how foreign even basic learning concepts were to them.

Stanton was assigned to teach sophomore English, figuring she would give homework readings from books and discuss them in class. But with so many English as a Second Language students, she had to teach

vocabulary, grammar, and basic plot elements instead.

And since her school didn’t have enough books, all readings had to be done in class.

“It was something I never could have anticipated—not being able to assign reading homework,” she says.

Just hours into her first day in New Orleans, Kosberg had a student throw a tantrum and run out the building’s fire exit. She soon learned that her class had been stacked with students no other teacher wanted, including several who’d been kicked out of other schools for behavioral issues.

Kosberg wasn’t able to control them, either. But she had great sympathy for them.

“The behavior problems in the classroom...a lot of that was because they couldn’t follow what was going on.

They were so far behind. They couldn’t read,” she says.

“It was just so sad.”

Cronan faced a similar problem with many of her Bronx high school students. But instead of acting out their frustration, they were apathetic toward school.

“When you’re that far behind in school the feeling is, why am I even going to bother? I can’t catch up. I’m reading at a third-grade level and I’m 18,” Cronan says.

“I felt I was running out of things to do and energy to expend. I just felt overwhelmed, and felt no matter what I did, I couldn’t make a difference.”

Nor did her students want her to. By the end of Cronan’s first week teaching, her class declared it their mission to make all the new teachers at school quit by Thanksgiving.

Stanton’s afternoon appointments began to fill up. Pretty soon, she found students waiting at her door by 6:45 am, hoping to get in a little extra help before the bell rang.

She also figured out smarter ways to teach the vast array of students she’d been given.

“You learn to use your high-level kids as huge resources. Have them teach to the lower kids, then you hit the middle kids,” she explains. “And as you get to know each student more, you know what works for them. This isn’t my English as a Second Language kid: this is my student who really needs a Spanish-English Dictionary.

This is my student who needs to have a seat in the back of the class away from everyone else. And this is my student who needs to be allowed to listen to some music.”

For Kosberg, everything changed a month into the school year when she was reassigned to be the school’s reading specialist. Instead of trying to control 30 students in a classroom without walls, she was able to concentrate on small groups of six or seven children in a quiet area of the building.

In her new role she was able to use creative approaches to teaching—she had her dad build a puppet theater to help students act out the stories they were trying to read—and track each student’s progress, figuring out which lessons did and didn’t work for them.

“It was the first time in years that the work had actually been appropriate for them and they

TURNING THE TIDE All three women felt they’d failed their introduction to Teach for America. Cronan and Kosberg weren’t sure they would last even the semester. But through both subtle and direct changes, they all found their footing.

Stanton stayed after school every day to offer extra tutoring to students, but no one ever came. So, she decided to pick out the students who truly needed help, and personally invite them to tutoring, writing down their names and appointment times in her planner for them to see.

They felt that I was making time for them, and if it was written in my planner, they should come,” she explains.

“And I would check in with students the next day: ‘I really missed seeing you at tutoring. What’s up? Can you come today? When can you come?’ It was building this idea into them that I was investing in them, and it wasn’t just that I was hanging out in my classroom after school and if they stopped by that was fine. It was that I genuinely wanted to see them.”

were getting the individualized attention they needed,” she says. “A lot of these kids had been stagnating for years at the same reading level. In the year they worked with me, a lot of them went up a year or a year and a half in reading level. It was wonderful.”

Cronan’s breakthrough was arguably the toughest.

Her first obstacle was proving to her students that she wasn’t going to give up, no matter what they put her through.

“My students just need to test the adults in their lives sometimes,” she says. “Once you showed them that you were just going to keep trying, past the point of exhaustion, past the point of even reason, that you weren’t going to abandon them and that you were there for them, they opened up.”

around all the time and my mother would say, ‘Nina, stop being so holier than thou.’ The kids burst out smiling because that was the first time they had ever heard my first name. ‘Your name’s Nina? You used to boss your siblings around?’ It was just a moment where they saw a little glimpse of me as a person, and that was OK.”

RESHAPING THEIR LIVES Cronan, 25, is finishing her fourth year at Dreamyard Prep in the South Bronx, a few blocks north of Yankee Stadium.

She’s head of the English department, and one of the most popular teachers at school.

“I don’t have any behavioral management issues. They come in, they sit down, and they do their work,” she says. “It’s a different world, but it’s not different kids. I’m different.”

But Cronan’s real epiphany came when she learned that she, too, needed to change. She had thought that an innercity school teacher needed to be hard-nosed, strict, rigid, and closed off. Instead, she just needed to be herself.

Teach for America, indeed, has changed all three women.

The program forced them to face failure, pushed them beyond their limits, and made them work harder than they ever had in their lives.

“If you expect students to be vulnerable enough to learn, then the teacher has to be vulnerable, too. It’s hard to do that, but that’s the reality,” she says.

It also gave them a first-hand look at the incredible disparities in American education.

“I remember we were reading a passage out loud and one of the terms was the expression ‘holier than thou.’ One of the students asked what does that mean? I was about to give kind of a dictionary definition, but I instead said, ‘You know, when I was growing up I used to boss my siblings

“I know now that the New Orleans school system is getting better, but there was a part of me, after Hurricane Katrina, that felt that maybe if my students ended up in another city, they’d get a better education,” said Kosberg, 33. “It’s sad to think of a community getting displaced, but I remember thinking, ‘Oh, those schools in Houston are better.’”

Kosberg never taught again, but the conditions she saw at Fisk-Howard Elementary School have impacted her career. This spring she’ll receive a master’s degree from The Stanford University School of Education.

Her long-term goal is to work with businesses and educational foundations to close funding gaps in K-12 schools.

Cronan’s success has been tempered by the fact that her school continues to receive failing grades, and could be shuttered in September. She’s not yet sure whether she’ll stay or move on.

Stanton, meanwhile, is completely immersed in her job, rising at 5 am for tutoring sessions and parent meetings before school, and staying until 5 pm, when the last pupil departs. At night, the 23-year-old grades papers and writes lesson plans until she falls asleep.

“I really love my job, but I don’t think Teach for America has finished changing me,” she says. “I made a two-year commitment, and I’m just a quarter of the way through.”

The South Bronx high school where Nina Cronan teaches is, in many ways, unlike BB&N. But students there aren’t nearly as different as she thought they’d be.

“People think that, oh, it’s an impassible barrier between one world and the next. It’s just not. It’s kids getting crushes, and talking with their friends, and the kid who gets left out, and the class clown, and the dorky kid who turns in his homework every day, and all that,” she says. “Yes, the language is different, and some of the clothes are different, but the way that teenagers interact is the same.”

We asked each of BB&N’s Teach for America members to name their most memorable students from their two-year assignments. Here’s who came to mind.

Sarah Stanton: I have one one student, Val, who is usually here morning, noon, and night.

Val is a superstar. She’s super-involved in the Boys and Girls Clubs, she’s taking AP classes and honors courses, and she has a goddaughter, Jalen, her friend’s daughter, who is one year old. Val has Jalen over at her house many nights a week and takes her to daycare. She’s essentially a second mother to Jalen. Val is a sophomore.

Marco came in this morning with his glove to tell me about baseball tryouts.

He is super, super smart, but it’s really hard for him to do something unless he has ‘that reason.’ He has never lived with his parents, so the idea ‘I’ll make my parents proud’ is not necessarily the feeling that immediately resonates with him. He lives with his grandmother and he worries more that he’s a burden on her. He’s more concerned about her not worrying about him than being an academic success.

Dara Kosberg: Rodneisha was probably one of my hardest kids. Wow, she was pretty tough. I would say even in second grade kids would come out of the school yard bloody because she had beaten someone up. But I had her in my reading group and in my third-grade class, and I think we formed a pretty tight relationship. I don’t think she had a ton of support at home, so I hope that things worked out for her.

This little boy named Erin kind of had the sense of humor of an 85-yearold somehow. He had some learning disabilities but he tried so hard. Every single day he came in and was so committed to learning. He was probably a little dorky, so kids didn’t think he was cool, but to me he was sort of the model. He was nice to everyone. He was just this sweet, committed kid.

Nina Cronan: During my first year I quickly formed a relationship with Denisse, who had a really tough life. She came to me sobbing one morning saying, ‘Miss, can I live with you? I can’t go home.’ I had graduated from college just a few months earlier and here is this teenager who thinks I’m the stable adult she should be living with, not her mother. She didn’t come to live with me, but I worked with her and with a counselor on her struggles. She’s an incredible poet and writer, and she went on to graduate. She’s now at Hobart and William Smith, a liberal arts school in upstate New York.

Nelson had this long hair and was very emotional, one of those dark, brooding teens. He thought that school was pointless, though he was actually very bright. We struggled for a long time. Last week I saw him on the train, and his hair was short, he was all clean cut, and he gave me a hug. He was going to class at Borough of Manhattan Community College and was all like, ‘How are you? So good to see you. I loved your class.’ It was one of those nice moments where you see kids maturing and moving on.

A surprising number of Browne & Nichols, Buckingham, and BB&N graduates have found love as a result of their time at the School.

Some seemed destined to tie the knot from early on, others barely knew each other until years later. But knowingly or not, each of these couples began their journey on the banks of the Charles River.

Ted and Lucy Rand never met during their Browne & Nichols and Buckingham days. It took a visit by Ted to see his sister, who was working at the Tenacre School in Wellesley, to chance upon his future bride. “Lucy was teaching with my sister,” recalls Ted. “Needless to say, at first sight, the ‘sparks began to fly!’”

Sixty-four years later, the sparks are still flying. A conversation with either reveals a generosity of spirit, warmth of character, sense of humor, and mutual affection that has served the couple beautifully since their first days together. “We listen to each other,” says Ted, when asked about the secret to a long, happy marriage.

With regard to BB&N, their recollections are fond and proud, but it’s the future they focus on: “We hope BB&N will continue its high standards, and maintain human dignity and respect.”

Full of curiosity and interesting anecdotes, Ted relates an adage he and Lucy have embraced: “Help thy brother’s boat across, and Lo! thine own has reached the shore.”

“I don’t remember who said that, but it’s served me well,” he laughs. It’s hard to disagree with 64 years of marriage.

Wedding Date: Februar y 11, 2012 Wedding Location: Shelburne, VT Wedding Song & CAKE: Although there was no official wedding song, Ellen describes the significance of their wedding cake: “It was made by my granddaughters (ages 18 and 15) using the same recipe that I used for their parents’ wedding cake 20 years ago—a delicious spice cake.”

Honeymoon: Jay Peak ski area in northern Vermont: Although the eight-degree weather and 22-mph wind made skiing impossibly uncomfortable, “sight seeing, lollygagging…and wonderful food” abounded.

Tom and Ellen’s story is truly a tale of BB&N roots running deep. After graduating from Browne & Nichols and Buckingham respectively in 1956, it would be another 56 years before Cupid saw fit to join the couple.

“There is a lot of history between us and the School even though we never formerly met,” says Ellen. “Tom remembers seeing me in the Browne & Nichols and Buckingham co-production of Down in the Valley. All the girls were wearing long dresses and the boys were dressed as railroad workers singing songs. But he was doing other things and our paths never crossed.”

More than 50 years later, Alumni/ae Director Beth Jacobson unknowingly donned the hat of matchmaker when she brought the couple together in anticipation of their 55th reunion.

“Beth contacted me and said, ‘You two are within driving distance, why don’t you get your classes together and make this a big celebration?’” recounts Ellen. “So Tom and I met at Barnes and Noble in Burlington, VT, to send some emails to our classmates from his laptop. Pretty soon we got together to do some contra dancing, and things took off from there.”

Ironically, it was probably not the first time the two had danced together!

“It turns out that both of us had likely danced together as teenagers in the southwestern area of New Hampshire. He spent his summers in Jaffrey, and I spent mine in Dublin,” muses Ellen. “That was what you did on weekends back then as a teenager, went to the various town square dances (that or a drive-in theater, but who had a car?!). So, we may have dosey-doed, but we never did meet and go by first names.”

The coincidences don’t end there. Various Cambridge connections unite Tom and Ellen as well, none more relevant than their mutual respect for former Buckingham math teacher, Marian Vaillant.

“Miss Vaillant was my mentor at Buckingham, and she and Tom’s mother were best friends at Radcliffe. So, Tom grew up respecting Buckingham a lot, and when the two schools merged in 1974, it was really quite a celebration.”

“I noticed him right away at dancing school, which we all attended, because he was one of three boys who were tall enough for me to dance with comfortably,” recalls Margaret fondly. “I was already at my full height and most of the boys were much smaller than I was. At one point that first year, Jack and I won one of the dance competitions at that dancing school. Jack was, and still is, an excellent dancer.”

Margaret also recalls performing in a production on which Buckingham and Browne & Nichols collaborated.

“Jack and I both spoke French fluently, so we were cast in Jean Anouilh’s Antigone. He was the king and I had the part of the nurse. We would rehearse together, and it was at that time that we started dating.” The couple never looked back, and were married right after college.

If you could write the script for an alumnus/a couple’s journey, perhaps Jayson and Elena would be the template to work off of. To hear Elena tell it, there’s very little When Harry Met Sally angst in this tale.

“We were always friends at BB&N, and then started dating sophomore year,” recalls Elena. “We even went to senior prom together, although neither of us can remember where it was!”

Jayson paints a slightly different picture: “Well, I wanted to date Elena for many months but she wasn’t interested.

After a double date to a Paula Abdul (ha!) concert with different dates, we connected when I asked her to go to my cousin’s wedding with me in November of 1991.”

The college years saw the couple parted, Elena at Boston College and Jayson at George Washington University, but “we dated long distance for most of it,” says Elena. “And reunited when Jayson returned to Boston.”

While well aware of the clichés and “awwws” that accompany a courtship such as theirs, Jayson and Elena are laughing happily along. “Many people say high school sweethearts don’t last, but we’ve celebrated ten years married, have two wonderful daughters (Julia, 5, and Chloe, 2), and find that our friendship, laughter, and great communication make it all work.”

“Fritz and I were friends at BB&N; we went to each other’s graduation parties and knew each other really well,” says Lisa.

“But I don’t think anyone would have bet even a dollar that we’d end up together, we were so opposite.”

Lisa paints herself as the straight-and-narrow good girl to the more rebellious Fritz. “I was class president, wore a scarf, and probably looked like I was ready for the monastery,” she recalls.

“Fritz was kind of a bad-boy kid (well, how bad can you be at BB&N?). He had the hat on backwards, and the chinos frayed at the end—he was a jokester.”

The two lost touch after high school but serendipity intervened when they both wound up in Providence, RI, she at law school and he at medical school. “We lived a half-mile apart,” Lisa says.

“For three years, I probably jogged by his apartment four times a week without even knowing it.”

Fritz and Lisa’s story falls into the category of “truth is stranger than fiction.”

Here is where the story takes a Hollywood twist: “My college roommate Krissy Guleserian was chief resident in the hospital Fritz was interning at, and I was going to say my ‘good byes’ to her on one of my last days before moving to Boston for a job. I remember sneaking into the intensive care unit with Dunkin’ Donuts for Krissy as sort of a parting gift, and crashing into Fritz as I spun through the doors. Of course, coffee spilled everywhere.

The stars must have aligned…we recognized each other right away. We went out for sushi the next night, and were married seven months later.”

Rebekah Splaine Salwasser ’96 Wedding Date: August 20, 2011

Wedding Location: Heath, MA Wedding Song: These Arms of Mine, by Otis Redding Honeymoon: Hawaii: “ We hit all four islands, hiked to see lava flow, discovered several deserted beaches, and went kite surfing to name a few highlights.”

Prospects didn’t start out all that well for Zac and Bekah as a couple. “I was a lifer and he came in the seventh grade,” says Bekah. “We were friends, he actually asked me out in seventh grade but I said ‘no.’ He claims I made some bogus excuse like I was busy or something, but I don’t remember exactly. It’s funny now.”

And then there was the party he threw that Bekah may or may not have been invited to. “Friends of ours will say, ‘Remember Zac’s party?’ And I’ll say, ‘Oh, I didn’t go to that…wait, was I invited?’”

But reparations began in the winter of 2009 at a Boston Celtics game. Zac was home for the holidays from Los Angeles, where he was living at the time, and Bekah was working with the team.

“He was in the nosebleed seats, and I was working for the Celtics then…it seemed like whenever BB&N alums were at a game, I would get a text saying, ‘We have to catch up!’ but mostly just trying to get a seat upgrade,” laughs Bekah.

“So, like most people, he texted me that night…but I saw right through it—‘sorry, I’m unavailable right now, but let’s grab coffee tomorrow to catch up.’ We both had to cancel coffee for some reason, but I asked him to come out and meet me and some friends in Harvard Square later that night.”

There’s no haziness surrounding what happened next: “We had a great night, and spent every day for the next few days together,” recalls Bekah. “He even changed his flight back to LA two or three times to stay longer.”

After four months of dating long-distance, Bekah received a job offer in the area that she couldn’t refuse, and Zac moved back to Cambridge.

“He’s amazing, he’s inspired me. Now if I can just get him to go to Strawberry Night….”

Rachel Hirsch ’93 Wedding Date: June 25, 2011

Wedding Location: Brewster, MA (in the backyard of Rachel’s house!)

If you ever needed a compelling reason to attend Strawberry Night, Josh and Rachel’s story might be it. While at their 15th reunion, mutual friend Sarah (Edgerly) Foleno ’93 suggested that the three of them all go out to dinner since Josh had just moved back to Cambridge. “ Josh and I quickly established a mutual love for break dancing, the 70’s TV show Welcome Back, Kotter, the Pixies, good food, and most of all, each other,” says Rachel. “We were engaged two years later.”

The “reunion” wasn’t completely out of the blue as Rachel confesses to having had “a secret crush” on Josh during their senior spring.

“He was quiet, tall, really good at math, and had beautiful eyes— I thought he was quite intriguing,” she recalls. “Josh thought I was nice, I guess...he thought I was very social and artsy.”

The couple had also taken French together for a couple of years and had worked on the same team during 10th grade debates, “although in both of these cases, neither one of us remembered the other one being there, and we discovered it through friends and funny, coincidental memories.”

Thank goodness for friends….

A g A M E Max Seidman ’08

Max Seidman ’08 thinks about games very differently than you do.

He uses words like mechanics, message, and action step; he has read textbooks about game design; and, of course, he has logged thousands of hours playing them.

Like every other passionate gamer, Seidman’s eyes light up as he talks about the dream: “Of course I’d love to design games, I’m like most gamers—that’s the hope.… ” But unlike most gamers, Seidman, a senior at Dartmouth, has already designed one, and a very successful one at that.

Bent over a colorful, rectangular game mat, long hair hanging down, Seidman gives a walk-through of Pox: Save the People, the board game he co-designed for the Dartmouth research laboratory he interns with, called Tiltfactor.org.

“The core concept of Pox… is to get across the message of herd immunity,” explains Seidman. “Which follows, ‘If I vaccinate myself I’m not just protecting me, I’m protecting everyone around me.’”

The premise of the game is simple: a deadly disease has broken out in the neighborhood, and it’s the player’s job to contain the disease. The hope is that players will learn, through the trials of the gameplay, that “prevention is more effective than treatment in controlling communicable diseases.”

This subject matter is a far cry from the games Seidman grew up playing, which included typical action/adventure titles (he cites EV Nova, Lost Cities, and Dominion as some favorites). But Tiltfactor is a different kind of company, as is touted by its motto: “game design for social change.”

And the idea for Pox actually spawned from a need in the New Hampshire health community.

“We were approached by the New Hampshire Mascoma Valley Health Initiative, an organization that was smack dab in the middle of the ‘do vaccines cause autism?’ scare,” says Seidman. “They were having trouble convincing people to vaccinate their children and asked us, ‘Could you make a game about this to help educate people?’”

The result was Pox, and since its release in Spring 2011, it has become one of Tiltfactor’s biggest successes, drawing rave reviews and chalking up big sales.

“We took it to Gencom, a huge gaming convention in Indianapolis last summer, and that was one of the most gratifying experiences,” Seidman says. “We’ve got pictures of a group of six-year-old girls, and then a guy celebrating his 65th anniversary of gaming, playing it. I’m flabbergasted constantly by how much, and how many people, enjoy this game.”

Since then, Seidman has designed and launched a mobile app for Pox, which is selling well, and most rewardingly, he relates that “we’ve sold a large number of copies to the New Hampshire public school system where it is being used with great success in the science curriculum.”

The opportunity has been sort of a dream scenario for Seidman. Although he is working towards a bachelor’s degree in engineering, a career he is still very interested in, Seidman credits Tiltfactor with opening the door to a another potential path: game design.

Founded by Dartmouth Professor Mary Flanagan in 2003, Tiltfactor’s lab exists in a white clapboard Colonial house in the center of the school’s campus. The company employs four full-time staffers and between four to eight interns, the latter of whom work mostly for course credit, but occasionally for cash during the summers or if their course schedule will allow a part-time job.

Flanagan began Tiltfactor with the mission of becoming the first academic center to focus on “critical play.”

“Our mission is to research and develop software and playful art that creates rewarding, compelling, and socially responsible interactions,” she says, and notes that having interns like Seidman has been a boon to her company.

“Max excels at seeing how systems work and is interested in diverse problems,” says Flanagan. “He’s a flexible thinker. He’s 100% reliable, analytical, and can look at a problem through many ‘lenses.’”

Talking to Seidman, what really comes through is just how carefully he does think through what most people would consider just fun and games. “We just received a grant from the National Science Foundation to create a series of games helping to decrease gender bias and stereotype threats in science, technology, math, and engineering fields,” he says.

“This is a challenge…the danger is that you design a game, slap a story on top of it, and say, ‘Now it’s teaching something!’ While that might be true, it would be more resource-effective to simply make a pamphlet or book in that case,” he says. “You want to make the actions the player is doing actually speak to your message, and for our games—for social change—we pay very close attention to the message and values we’re imparting.”

It’s not all philosophy, though. Sometimes you just have to sit down and play. “I’ve been a gamer since Middle School, and it’s like most forms of creation; in order to write well you have to read a lot, in order to direct films you have to watch a lot of films, and in order to design games you need to play a lot of games.”

Somebody has to do it…and Seidman is happy to oblige. b

Unbeknownst to many, BB&N’s Renaissance Hall harbors a secret: one of contemporary jazz’s finest pianists, Pandelis Karayorgis.

By virtue of a more than 20-year career as a musician, and his 21-album catalog, the modest teacher-byday is recognized in jazz circles as a major talent. In one recent article, Chicago-based music critic Peter Margasak described Karayorgis as “one of jazz’s best and most underrated pianists.”

But perhaps Karayorgis’ finest performance has been his work in BB&N’s rehearsal rooms over the past 17 years. It is there that he relishes instilling a passion for music into, and coaxing muted, diminutive fifths out of, Middle and Upper School students.

The Bulletin spent some time with Karayorgis recently to learn more about his life’s passion: jazz.

I t was with mixed emotions that Pandelis Karayorgis recently sold his 1981 Rhodes Key-

board to BB&N. The beloved and well-seasoned instrument had been purchased for him by his parents in Athens, Greece, when he was an aspiring 18-year-old musician.

“I think it is getting a good home here with these wonderful students,” he says cheerfully of the scuffed and scratched-up instrument. But to understand Karayorgis as a musician, you have to travel back to a time when his “Rhodie” keyboard glistened like polished ebony under the hot, white lights of Athens’ underground music clubs.

Toting the bulky instrument to four gigs a week while he studied economics (at his father’s insistence) at the University of Piraeus, Karayorgis was just beginning to forge the musical identity that would come to define his life.

“Those early years, the early ’80s, were a period when jazz really flourished in Greece…it was a movement of sorts, a renaissance of arts following Greece’s suppressive dictatorship of the ’70s,” says Karayorgis from Room 218 in Renaissance Hall.

That liberating and free spirit stuck with Karayorgis to the point that his style personifies the avant-garde; much more innovative and cutting edge than mainstream jazz, and at first listen, perhaps more difficult to digest. “My own sister will not listen to my albums,” says Pandelis, with a laugh. “But she loves to come see me play in person; the performance, the context, the interplay of people with real instruments…that is an essential part of jazz.”

He has played to hundreds of people in Vienna music halls, and he has played on streets in front of ten people with a cup set out to collect change. “I do this because I love it, and although I only perform two or three times a month now, I am so lucky to have that flexibility and the chance to be immersed in jazz every day at BB&N.” Karayorgis has shepherded a vibrant jazz program at the School, stressing not only the mechanics of playing, but also the history and spirit of the music.

“Jazz is about so much more than just the notes,” says Karayorgis.

“It’s about finding your voice, capturing the soul of the music. It’s about absorbing what came behind you, and making your own statement going forward.”

It’s not the approach found in every high school or middle school jazz program. “I could just purchase the sheet music for each piece and assign it to students,” explains Karayorgis, “but I’d rather arrange each part to fit the specific talents and strengths of the players.”

In each of the four different groups he teaches at the School (a Middle School group, a ninth grade group, and two ensembles of primarily

Karayorgis’ latest album, System of 5 , features his nationally lauded Karayorgis Quintet. The record personifies Karayorgis’ progression as a trailblazing pianist, and surfaced on several top-20 album lists in 2011. upperclassmen), the results are unique performances by students stretching and reaching for goals catered specifically to them.

Because of his own avant-garde style, Karayorgis enjoys the opportunity to play the more traditional forms of jazz at BB&N with his students, but he is quick to point out that the kids aren’t just performing straight-ahead Duke Ellington standards: “They are tackling some very heavy compositions by jazz innovators such as Sun Ra, Thelonius Monk, and Charles Mingus.”

Attempting more innovative compositions nudges students outside of their comfort zones—“for that is the real history of jazz,” Karayorgis says. “At its roots, it was the expression of a marginalized section of society; the true jazz innovators were going against the grain, not just of music, but of society.”

Few things please Karayorgis more than when a student grasps jazz as not only music, but as an expression or art form. “This year I have students emailing me YouTube clips of performances they saw and want to learn,” Karayorgis says, and his eyes light up at the thought.

Former math teacher Manny Sargent, who still possesses the clear voice and infectious enthusiasm he brought to the Upper School campus, will be ninety in November. He was planning a large catered party until it struck him that with so much hunger in the world he did not want to spend his money that way. Since the death of his wife Mary, he has lived alone in the gracious early 19th-century home they created on a street of old houses in Bath, Maine. Over the front door flies a colorful, slightly incongruous Earth Day flag. “It’s more an emotional than a political statement,” he says. “It’s important for people to realize we’re on the planet together.”

A graduate of Belmont Hill and Amherst, Sargent worked as a salesman for the American Can Company, and then taught at Governor Dummer for seven years. After earning his Master’s degree at Bowdoin, he went to Nobles for seven years, Roxbury Latin for one, and BB&N from 1976 through 1988, except for one year spent as a sabbatical replacement at Wellesley. “I was the ISL league bum. My entire experience was in private schools—no license needed,” he observes.

“BB&N was a very nice fit. I was very comfortable with the kids, who were among the most able I ever had anywhere, and included two Rhodes Scholars. My approach was quite simple: I considered that I was in competition with everyone else for my fair share of students’ time and had to make it appealing. We had fun but got some work done.”

Mark Fidler, a former colleague and current member of BB&N’s math department, elaborates: “He used his bigger-than-life personality to engage and entertain the students and was clear as day in the lessons he taught. I recall being impressed by the rapt attention of his students. Back then, we all taught on green chalkboards, and I remember Manny’s excitement one day when two slivers of chalk tumbled down the board together. He made it seem as exciting as the Kentucky Derby. And then, quickly, the topic was math again. I later learned about Manny’s annual partner test, a take-home test where each student pair had a week or so to work through ten killer integration problems. I was amazed at how engaged the students were. That insight resulted in my series of proof partner quizzes and partner test in my Honors Geometry classes. To this day, they are a cornerstone of that course.”

“When I decided to retire, [former Head of School] Peter Gunness asked me to stay for five more years, but I wanted to spend more time with Mary,” Sargent recalls. “We moved up here to Maine partly because my father used to sail up here when I was a boy. Soon after, Bowdoin needed a sailing coach, so I said, ‘I'll keep the kids from drowning.’ We had cruddy boats and fewer regattas. It was hard to get the kids out of bed. Now they have quite an elaborate program. I taught evening school at the Bath-Brunswick Community College and am still a volunteer tutor, mostly for people in their thirties making life changes—free math help and quite a bit of satisfaction. Right now, I am helping my barber and her husband with math.”

From his front door, one passes through an exquisitely assembled New England interior, a tribute to his wife Mary’s taste and discernment over many years, past the dining room sideboard with its portrait of 19th-century Bostonian Lucius Manlius Sargent (“I think he was something of a scoundrel,” Manny remarks), and finally reaches his neat workshop, where Sargent spends most of his time. Hundreds of pictures of family, students, and friends line the walls. Here (and throughout the house) one encounters numerous versions of Mary looking out at the viewer. “I have a guy coming by on Monday to thin my tools out a bit,” Manny observes. “When I was a woodworker I went to workshops and saw violin bows and coffee tables guys made, and I was just doing bread boards. The lady in the frame shop put me onto this cross stitching. I get pleasure out of sharing it. I started with tiny things like bookmarks. Then I saw a kit at Jo-Ann’s that took about five months and got me confident enough to improvise. This is number five. I began it on June 20th, and it took about 200 days or 400 hours. I am sending it to my stepdaughter next week as a surprise.”

He proffers a Katahdin Crunch. “I give candy as hostess presents nowadays,” he explains, “and deliver muffins and candy to the bank.

The people at the Bath Sweet Shoppe make up these ‘Manny bars’ (chocolate bars whose wrappers bear Manny’s picture and a saying, such as ‘Sweet and Sarcastic but Never Bitter’).” From his wallet he produces some “Manny money.” He dispenses the bills to kids to take to the candy store and exchange for the bars, which are kept there in a special metal lunchbox.

“When Mary was sick I was pretty out straight,” he recalls. “Afterwards, the doctor said, ‘You have to reinvent yourself and not refuse invitations.’ Cross stitching and the candy thing have helped. I have lots of people to thank. It’s good to have a support group.” Sarah Fraser at the Sweet Shoppe concurs: “Everyone in Bath knows Manny: he is beloved around town and is one of the most vibrant people I know. The bank has put him into their television commercials. He has a steady stream of visitors—former students and friends—and many admirers. He puts us all to shame, riding his bike while we use air-conditioned cars.” His recent gift to the town is a bronze bench outside the Library with two life-size children reading and space for a third to join them, a memorial to Mary.

“You want to be productive as long as you can. I did some volunteer work at one of those nursing homes and don’t want that. I do feel pretty neat—I don’t deserve it, but I think I’ll take it. I have an exercise routine. I walk on my treadmill three times a week. I put on my audio book and pedal away on my bike. Lately I’ve been reading Freedom and The Tennis Partner. Another book I read posed thirty questions by very old people to create thirty lessons for living. Where I fail is in spirituality and travel. I like to pee in my own pan. I use e-mail to keep in touch, and the furthest I drive nowadays is to L.L. Bean’s returns desk. I have a friend who teaches driver’s education, and he has authority to take away my keys at any time.”

At once supremely gregarious and truly self-effacing, Sargent is hard to sum up. Patricia Simboli ’78 helps: “When I think of him, I think of a man full of love, generosity, wisdom, and curiosity. I think of someone who has engaged life fully at every stage. Today it is cross stitching, music, and making apple sauce, but years ago it was sailing, and at BB&N it was coaching baseball and teaching math.

And it was always loving his wife. Their car, golf cart, boat, even stationery had a logo: M and M. They were like two teenage lovers their whole life. He is a study in having overcome some of life’s toughest challenges with grace, humor, heart, humility, and generosity.

His deep giving and caring make all the difference, as they did for me when I was at BB&N, and do as an adult. He is witty, fun-loving, and passionate—a teacher not of math or coach of baseball but a teacher in how to live life passionately, make sense of it with humor, and embrace it completely by giving of oneself. He is a genuine gift.” b

BB&N FUNDRAISING PRIORITIES 2011-2012 1. 2011–2012 Annual Fund The Annual Fund has an immediate impact on the educational mission of the School. This year’s Fund will directly benefit students and faculty in the following areas: • financial aid; • technology; • faculty professional development; • curricular initiatives in Arabic, math, and Middle School science; • arts and athletics programs.

Our goal for the 2011–12 Annual Fund is $2,655,000. As of late March, we have raised $1.9 million, or 73 percent of our goal.

2. Daycare Center An onsite Daycare Center for BB&N faculty and staff will enhance our ability to attract and retain faculty and staff and provide an important quality-of-life benefit for our faculty with young children. The Center would be created in renovated space on the ground floor of our 46 Belmont Street campus.

The estimated cost of the project is $900,000, which must be raised by January 2013 to ensure opening by Fall 2013.

3. Financial Aid Continuing to increase BB&N’s financial aid budget through both endowed and spendable gifts remains a high priority to support our value of a diverse and inclusive community. Currently, our need-based financial aid program supports 23 percent of our students and our long-term goal is to be able to award aid to 30 percent of our students.

4. Faculty Compensation and Professional Development Endowment Increasing BB&N’s endowment for faculty compensation and professional development remains a key fundraising initiative. Support for our faculty enables the School to attract and retain the highest quality faculty and underscores the value that we place on the connections between students and teachers.

5. Edward E. Ford Foundation Grant The Edward E. Ford Foundation has awarded BB&N a $50,000 grant which must be matched by July 31, 2012. The grant will be used to assess progress BB&N has made on addressing the achievement patterns of our students of color, develop and implement responses to that assessment, and host a symposium to deepen our understanding of differences in achievement patterns and strategies to address those differences.

He came to our 55th Class Lunch in 1998, at which we also had the Jacobses, the Chandlers, the Whitmans, Woody Smith, and maybe Jim Patterson ‘49. I think that Benny still had his law offices in Cambridge at that time. Since then, I’ve periodically relayed news of him and his relatives. Now we are seven! Last fall I spoke at the annual meeting of the Frost colloquium that his granddaughter, Lesley, convenes each year in a different place. Next September it will be held at the Frost Museum in Franconia, New Hampshire, near where both George Roorbach and

Veronica Pease Farrington ‘44 reside.

I hope that all three of us survive long enough to have a mini-reunion.

“As I write this in very early February, we have blossoming nearby us here in Washington, DC, camellias, campanula, snow-drops, crocuses, daffodils, forsythia, Japanese quince, and red-bud (the so-called Judas tree that usually flowers at Easter time). Quite a testimony to global warming!

May all these early-bloomers make it through the rest of February and beyond!

We’ve been here in Washington for 47 years now but plan to sell our house this spring and then settle in on the Vineyard. I think that when we first came here, BB&N alumni/ae convened a few times at the Georgetown home of John Moors Cabot ‘19. Cabot had a distinguished career in the Foreign Service and was an ambassador to Sweden, Columbia, Brazil, and Poland under Eisenhower and Kennedy. Chuck Colson ‘49 hosted us at the Cosmos Club around the time of Watergate. My ties to the School strengthened as we neared our 40th in 1983.

Several BB&N meetings were held at the home of the personable Zeph Stewart, a Harvard classics professor who was then serving as head of the Hellenic Institute based at Dumbarton Oaks. Zeph’s daughter, Sarah Stewart, graduated from BB&N in 1979. This year, an estate sale was held at the home here in Spring Valley of Zeph’s brother, the late Potter Stewart, Justice of the Supreme Court from 1958–1981.

Another head of the Hellenic Institute in our era was Giles Constable ‘46, a history professor at Harvard, who was a schoolmate of ours at B&N, though he didn’t graduate from the School. But his brother, John ‘44 did. He was a Harvard classmate of mine and went on to become a distinguished plastic surgeon based at Mass. General. His daughter, Amelia Constable, graduated from the School in 1978. The Constable boys joined the School at around the time of the beginning of World War II. They were the great (or great great) grandsons of the famous English landscape painter, John Constable. One year, the BB&Ners met at our home. Katharine Slade Newbegin ‘18 attended as did Pete White ‘50 and Ann Imlah Schneider ‘51. Ann worked in the department of education. My father was her pediatrician. At later gatherings, I met Ellen Frost ‘62 and some New Hampshire neighbors of Henry Maxfield ‘41. The latter were BB&N parents. Ellen has been—among her many other posts—Assistant Secretary of State for International Affairs and a

fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Her book, Asia’s New Regionalism, came out in 2008. Once I reconnected with Ellery Woodworth ‘50 when he came in from Baltimore for the occasion. He rose high up in the administration of Johns Hopkins, serving as assistant to the president of Hopkins for government relations. His father was G. Wallace “Woody” Woodworth, professor of music at Harvard and longtime director of the glee club. Ellery’s uncle was John Woodworth, musical director at our church, the First Parish (Unitarian) in Cambridge, where Leslie Pennington, the father of Mary Weatherall ‘48, was the minister. Ellery starred in the school’s Gilbert and Sullivan concerts. Recently I noticed in the rolls of the Cosmos Club the name of Robert M. O’Neil ‘52. He taught at the University of Virginia—probably in the law school—and also served as the university’s president. We’ll very much miss life here in the neighborhood of all these worthies, along with the novelist, Ann Landis McLaughlin ‘47, Nancy Ames English ‘47, and two of our four children.”

Bill Dole (Westwood, MA) writes, “A few years ago my wife, Johnnie, and I moved to Fox Hill, a retirement community, for the winter months. We were delighted to run into Lefty Thomas ‘48 and his wife, Tootsie. We have enjoyed having dinner together from time to time. We spend our summers at the Cape and like to travel. Last year we realized we had been to every state except Oklahoma, so we had to go there. On our first night in Oklahoma City, at a local bistro, the waitress 33

asked us where we were from. (Maybe we Easterners look different.) When we told her this was our first night in our 50th state she must have told the owner.

The owner came over and insisted our dinner was on the house including the wonderful desserts and all the wine we could drink. Talk about mid-western hospitality.”

Leonard Gilman (Florida) lives in North Palm Beach near one of his daughters. He retired in 1972 from the modular home business. His other daughter lives in Moscow.

He follows the activities of his three grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. He takes full advantage of living five minutes from the beach.

“What extraordinary self-discovery years those were for me: to learn English, Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Beowulf at the same time, prompting me to ask my mom in Chinese how many dialects are there in the English language; to have discovered that I could sing from Mr. Faulkner (what news have we of him?); to have sung Trial by Fire by Journey; as the foreman of the Jury not knowing the difference between a crime of ‘bigamy’ or ‘burglary,’ for ‘marrying two wives at a time’ (my sense of humor needed more English to bloom).

What news have we about Ellery Woodworth ‘50, who played the judge (and a class or two behind us)?

About Robin Brent, who played the defendant? Tom Norbury, [Editor’s Note: Passed away circa 1990] who played the bailiff? And Duncan Smith, who played the lawyer for the plaintiff?

These are small volcanic islands, formerly part of the Portuguese colonial empire, located on the equator in the gulf of Guiné off the West Coast of Africa. In the 15th and 16th centuries these small islands served the maritime explorers as a place to lay over and restock on their journeys to the Orient and the Americas (these included the ships of Magellan and Vasco da Gama). Then, as now, these two small islands are covered with lush vegetation and an unending supply of tropical fruits and fish. This visit completed our quest of visiting all the former colonies of the Portuguese empire.”

John “Jack” Grinold (Brighton, MA), the Associate Director for Communications at Northeastern University for more than 50 years, was officially inducted as the 53rd member of the Beanpot Hall of Fame.

Grinold, known as an original “Beanpotter” and the de facto chairman of the tournament Hall of Fame, has been elevated to the Beanpot pantheon as the only inductee in the tournament’s 60th year. He is the secretary of Boston’s celebrated annual winter tournament. As well, Jack was given the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award by the ‘33’ Touchdown Club. This club is an organization that is “dedicated to the game of football and its unsung heroes.”

This spring I enjoyed my role as Mrs. Jennings in the new musical Sense and Sensibility written by Jeff Haddow and composed by Neal Hampton. On sabbatical this fall, I spent three months in France. My first stop was Villefranche sur Mer where I enrolled in an immersion French program at the Institut de Francais. Armed with greatly enhanced language skills and accompanied by classmate Sue Butler, I traveled west across the south to Luz-St. Sauveur in the Pyrenees. A few days later we were joined by classmates Tish Upton and Sandra Hughes in the Dordogne, where we visited castles, churches, and the prehistoric caves. The second half of my journey included a quick trip to Italy where my daughter, Margot, and I visited the castles of a dear friend, but the bulk of the time was spent in Paris, where I lived in a little apartment on Blvd.

St. Germain in the 6th. Every day of this trip brought new adventures and delights.

Spending time with Sandra, Tish, and Sue was certainly one of them!”

San Francisco Reception February 8, 2012 More than 60 lively BB&Ners—alums and parents—from around the Bay Area gathered at the Hotel Monaco in downtown San Francisco on February 8th. Carrie Ardito Johnson '93, co-chair of the San Francisco Executive Committee, welcomed attendees to our reception and introduced the evening’s special guest speaker: Upper School English/Art History teacher Rob Leith. Attendees were delighted to have this beloved faculty member attend and to hear his news from the School and views on how BB&N has changed over the last several years. Tim Parks '01 then issued a spirited challenge to young alumni/ae to lead BB&N to victory in the February Faceoff, an ISL challenge for young alumni/ae giving participation.

Amy Totenberg (Atlanta, GA) reports, “After a long, arduous judicial nomination and confirmation process, I was confirmed by the Senate in late February 2011 as a U.S. District Court judge for the Northern District of Georgia. Since then, I have been engaged in an extraordinary learning process and new phase of my life.

What a wonderful opportunity to begin such a new professional venture—or adventure—at this point in my life! My daughters are all grown and fabulous.

Below is a photo of Ralph’s and my gang of girls taken at the formal judicial swearing-in celebration. My extended family, mostly sprinkled across the East Coast, spent the holidays, as always, together in a small spot in the Caribbean, enjoying each other’s company and the sea, sun, and stars.

BB&N Remembers Christopher Kern ’99 Family and friends gathered on February 11th to remember and celebrate the life of Christopher Kern ’99, who passed away just over ten years ago. The Stonestreet Lounge was filled all afternoon with laughter and remembrances, “just as Chris would have wanted it,” remarked his family.

Elizabeth and Greg Kern dropped the puck in memory of their brother Chris to start the varsity game.

Greg Kern ’96, his wife Keri, and their son Topher (named for Christopher) were joined by his sister Elizabeth Kern and her fiancé Jimmie, his mother Anne and father Harold, and many cousins, family friends, and alumni/ae from BB&N. Ed Bourget ’96, BB&N physical education teacher and coach, coordinated the first Christopher Kern Memorial Classic Hockey Game. More than 35 players shook out old blue and white Knights’ hockey jerseys, tied up their skates, and took the ice (some more gingerly than others) in memory of Chris. Current Lower and Middle School BB&N students held their own and zipped around more seasoned veterans. There was wonderful support and representation from Team Euro-American Air Freight Forwarding and BB&N faculty and staff.

Family friend Bonnie Tracey shared that “Chris was not just a brilliant and handsome scholar athlete; it was his charisma that captured people and for that people have lasting memories.” Anne Kern wrote after the event, “Today we shared stories and it was an amazing event for all to finally have an opportunity to recognize that huge void, and express our feelings in a healthy way.”

The day was a wonderful tribute to Chris and brought comfort to many. In addition, more than $9,000 was raised for the Christopher Kern Scholarship Fund, increasing the impact that this special financial aid fund will have in supporting current BB&N students. Dinora Walcott Alexander (Los Angeles, CA) writes, “Happy New Year!

While still acting and singing here in Los Angeles (most recently filming an episode of a new ABC show, Scandal), I am also a Professor of Theater and Public Speaking at California State University, Dominguez Hills. In addition to teaching at Cal State, I coach private acting clients and hold weekly classes through my company Acting: Honestly. I have had a very eventful end of 2011 filled with family and friends. On November 6, 2011, I became Mrs. Dinora Walcott Alexander!

I married the love of my life, Jason Shawn Alexander, at a lovely hilltop venue in Hollywood, California. We were blessed to have friends and family fly in from all over the country, including two former BB&N teachers who are family (Barbara Post and Luisa Field) as well as many of my former classmates and longtime friends, Liz Clay Roy, Caitlin Jones, Harry Pierre, Paul Solet, and Hamo Field. A few weeks after the wedding, we flew down to Miami for Art Basel where my

husband, Jason, was showing in the fair. Jason’s paintings are incredible!

At the same time, he had a solo show at his gallery in Miami, 101 Exhibit, where we were surrounded by his beautiful and moving work. Because we missed them so much, we headed east to spend New Year’s Eve with Liz Clay Roy and her husband, Rahoul, in New York. We had a blast! I can’t imagine a better way to begin 2012.

First started out working on an agriculture market development program with The UN World Food Programme (www.wfp. org/purchase-progress) and now for the past two years I’ve been working on a mobile phone for rural development project with the Grameen Foundational (check it out at www.applab.org). Any BB&N-ers around East Africa are more than welcome to give me a shout. I’ve had some interesting adventures around the continent in Ethiopia, Kenya, Zanzibar, South Africa, Mali, and more… and too many in Uganda itself to count, which is a truly beautiful, wild country! I have had my share of crazy stories as well (safely omitted here). In between when I drop back to Boston and the East Coast, my dear mate Bre Duffy and I get to hang and catch up. Bre is as talented as ever in her art pursuits, and just showcased a work of hers in a gallery in Chicago (LiveWire Chicago, Vf4 Gallery). She’ll probably kill me for saying that.”

All alums enjoyed reconnecting with former classmates, faculty, and friends upon their return home for Thanksgiving break. Joe Bradlee received Liberty League honorable mention as a freshman on the Union College baseball team.

Sarah Gottlieb is loving Tufts and is very involved on campus.

She is now working as a licensed Massachusetts EMT for Tufts Emergency Medicine Squad. She passed her licensing exams this past September and has since decided that she is going to pursue a career in emergency medicine, ideally as

an emergency room physician. Additionally, starting in February she will begin her leadership role as the New Member Educator for her sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi. She also writes for, and acts in, the school’s sketch comedy group. Major’s undecided.

Tufts has been great, and she sends her best to all of her classmates!

MILESTONES

In Memoriam Richard Darrow Kirkpatrick ‘36, age 93, of Brewster, MA, died September 9, 2011 after a long life of accomplishment. Born and raised in Melrose, he graduated from Melrose High and completed a post-graduate year at Browne & Nichols where he managed the crew team that went to the Henley Royal Regatta. He graduated from Tufts University in civil engineering, and helped establish the Tufts Yacht Club. Upon graduation in 1940, he entered the Marine Corps serving at Guantanamo Bay. He later participated in World War II in the Pacific in the Battles of Guadalcanal, Saipan, and Okinawa. Finally, as one of the youngest Majors in the Marine Corps, he became tactical commander of all engineer forces in Nagasaki just after the war with Japan ended. Richard’s hobbies included boating and genealogy.

Mary Faxon Willard ‘37, age 91 of Concord, formerly of Belmont, passed away on November 4, 2011, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Ralph H. Willard, Jr. and sister of the late Hope Faxon Allyn ‘41; mother of Deborah W. Sawyer ‘61 of Concord, Jane W. White ‘68 and her husband, Robie, of Belmont, Huntington F. Willard and his wife Vicki of Durham, NC, and the late Ralph H. Willard III. Also survived by her grandchildren, Robin Sawyer, Betsy Clarisey, Jody Swan, Jeffrey Willard, Victoria Willard, Peter White ‘02, Brook Willard, and Lindsay White ‘05, five great-grandchildren, and her sister Nancy Faxon Gourgas ‘34. Mrs. Willard was fond of gardening and the outdoors and enjoyed playing tennis. She was also active in church and community activities and volunteered for many years at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.

Henry L. Warren ‘41 of Rockville, MD, died on June 23, 2011, after suffering a heart attack. Mr. Warren founded and owned Warren-Harper Advertising Specialties, an advertising and marketing company in Bethesda from 1965 until he retired in 1979. A native of Brookline, MA, he served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. During the 1950s, he owned Anrich Enterprises, a fiberglass boat-building business in Tampa, before moving to Bethesda in the early 1960s.

David Middleton Wales ‘42, resident of Sudbury for 48 years, passed away January 8, 2012. Adored husband of Virginia (Didier) Wales for 58 years, cherished father of Holly Schunk of Kauai, HI, Nathaniel Wales of Kodiak, AL, and Robin Wales of Occidental, CA; grandfather of Hannah Wiess and Jenna Smith, brother of Roger Wales of Nashua, NH. David attended Shady Hill and Browne & Nichols in Cambridge and graduated from Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, went on to graduate from Phillips Exeter in 1942 and from Harvard in 1948. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He had a long career as a systems analyst in banking. He loved music, tennis, mountain climbing, traveling, and especially bodysurfing in Kauai with his children and grandchildren.

Stephen N. Root ‘43, age 85 of Bloomfield, CT, died at home on March 30, 2011, after a period of declining health. After graduating from Browne & Nichols he went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1946. He attended Tufts University Medical School from 1947-1949 and received an M.P.H. from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 1966.

He had a long career in public health teaching and management. His volunteer commitments included testifying before congressional groups on health care and preventive medicine as a member of the A.A.R.P. State Legislative Committee.

Daniel Charles Gerould ‘45, died February 13, 2012. He was Lucille Lortel Distinguished Professor of Theatre and Comparative Literature in the Ph.D. Program in Theatre at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Professor Gerould also held the posts of Director of Academic Affairs and Director of Publications at the CUNY Graduate Center’s Martin E. Segal Theatre Center. He was perhaps singlehandedly responsible for bringing American attention to the great achievements of Central and Eastern European drama and theatre of the twentieth century. With his writing on Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz and other revolutionary dramatists of the region, he revealed the unique, incendiary qualities of this work from the center of Europe. He also focused spotlights on American melodrama and the plays of Maurice Maeterlinck. It was, though, in his advocacy for Polish drama that he had the greatest influence, and were it not for his academic rigor and continuing enthusiasm for these plays, American stages would be far poorer. His web page at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center’s site details only a few of his many accomplishments. His most recent book, Quick Change, was published last year and contains several of his essays, including those on erotic French puppetry, the Grand Guignol, Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin, and of course his beloved Central European theatre.

Robert Shapiro ‘48, the son of a founding trustee of Brandeis University, Mr. Shapiro, who was a member of the university’s first graduating class and a longtime trustee at Brandeis, died of lung cancer January 6, 2012 at his home in Chestnut Hill. He was 81. Mr. Shapiro lived a few miles from the campus, and he met his wife, Valya Kazes, through the University. They met on a snowy night in January 1961, got engaged May 2, and married on June 16, 1961. “Bob was a man of unusually generous spirit,” Frederick M. Lawrence, president of Brandeis, said in a statement. “He and Valya have been great friends to Brandeis for so many years in so many ways. He will be dearly missed.”

Richard C. Zarse ‘49, age 81, of Merrimack, NH, and Sarasota, FL, passed away on November 26, 2011 in Sarasota. Richard was a 1949 graduate of Browne & Nichols School, a 1953 graduate of Norwich University, and was commissioned into the U.S. Army, serving as a First Lieutenant during the Korean War. Richard was President of the Heil Equipment Company of Boston for 11 years and a partner at C.M. Mixer Real Estate/Insurance firm in Wolfeboro, NH, for seven years. He was with the Nordblom Company in Boston, a commercial and industrial real estate firm, for over 25 years, serving as a vice president, before retiring in 2000.

Marta Enebuske ‘51, age 78, died December 10, 2011. She is survived by her beloved husband of 37 years, Howard E. Sandum. Marta passed away after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. After attending Buckingham, she went to Radcliffe and became an established architect in Manhattan.

She always said that Buckingham was one of the “best things to ever have happened to her.”

Augustus William Eustis ‘67, age 63, died peacefully on January 8, 2012, of complications from early onset Alzheimer’s. Loving husband of the Reverend Patricia Eustis; loving and proud father of William, Susan, Augustus, Kathryn, and Bryan; grandfather of John Widiger; survived by twin brother Frederic ‘67 and sister-in-law Lisa Eustis; sister Elspeth Taylor ‘63 and Polly Eustis ‘65. Gus grew up in Cambridge, graduated from Browne & Nichols in 1967 and then Harvard College in 1971. His successful career in computer programming included development of the first electronic voting machine and pioneering work on barcode recognition. He loved outdoor sports, working with his hands and spending time with his family.

BB&N holds a reception at its Boathouse next to the Eliot Bridge, a perfect spot from which to watch— or compete in—the world’s largest rowing regatta. [ TWO ] Maypole A fixture on BB&N’s spring calendar, dating back to the Buckingham days, Maypole brings the Lower School alive with singing, dancing, and of course…a maypole!

[ THREE ] Bivouac This 60-year tradition in the shadow of Mt. Monadnock barely needs an introduction. The two-week expedition into the New Hampshire woods is a vital character and team-building exercise for BB&N ninth graders, helping them to peel back the veneer of their daily routine, and learn lessons that will serve a lifetime.

[ FOUR ] Giving Thanks Day Every year on the day before Thanksgiving, Middle Schoolers give thanks via a wide range of community service projects on campus and throughout the region.

[ FIVE ] Senior Projects With college applications out of the way in the springtime, BB&N seniors are able to plan and carry out an independent project linked to academic goals, community service, career aspirations, or other interests. This tradition is a favorite of students and has launched many a career in unlikely directions. [ SIX ] Strawberry Night It’s party time for alumni/ae of all ages during reunion weekend in May. Platters of ripe strawberries, connections renewed, and a whole slew of fun events mark this annual favorite.

A Small Gift Now, a Huge Impact Later Janet Storella ’74, MD Janet Storella ’74, MD, looks back on her time at BB&N as a period that allowed her to foster her intense interest in math and science. “I choose to give back to BB&N because of the impact I’m making at the School with my gifts. I enjoy perpetuating the unique characteristics of the School’s incredibly talented faculty—the individuals who find each student’s potential and then diligently work to bring it out to its fullest.”

Today, as a physician working in the highly technical field of radiology, Janet is grateful to her high-caliber teachers, such as Doc Walters, for having a profound influence on her life and for the unique curriculum that BB&N offered (and continues to offer) its students. She also recognizes the School’s pioneering ways from when she was a student, such as offering coursework in Asian history and encouraging women to consider the sciences as a career path.

Janet chooses to support BB&N annually because “what I gained from the School really changed my life.” Recently, she notified BB&N that she has also provided a gift in her estate plan for the School, making her a member of the Almy Society. “Making a gift in this way allows me to provide a little bit more to BB&N than I would be able to do right now,” says Janet. “I hope others will consider this kind of gift—I feel that it is an easy way to make a significant impact on the future of BB&N.”
