Sydney’s Top 3 Favourite Beaches

Sydney is one of the most famous cities in the world; it has been attracting tourists for countless of years and has likely never failed to impress a single person. At the top of the very vast list of what makes this city so amazing is its stunning beaches. So weather you are passing through or here to stay a while, here are 3 of our favourite beaches to visit at Bridge Climb Sydney. Palm Beach Only one hour north of the CBD is the extremely popular Palm Beach. Although it is well known amongst locals and tourists, it is relatively quiet when compared to beaches like Bondi but it still offers something for everyone. At the northern end of the beach is a spot for suffers, so swimmers can enjoy the calmer waters. Palm Beach is also the Home of the TV series ‘Home And Away’ which can be an added aspect of entertainment when you never know who you are swimming next to!!

Bondi Beach Bondi is by far, one of the best beaches in

Sydney and for absolutely good reason. Indeed it is known for getting busy but this is also something of which makes it so incredible, because it always upholds a fantastic atmosphere. Bondi is also very popular because of the surrounding activities that are accessible; there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby to take in the vibe!

Manly Beach Manly Beach is incredibly popular amongst sporting enthusiasts as there is everything from stand up paddle boarding, jet boating and even volley ball. Whilst this keeps many individuals entertained to no end, there is

CRYSTAL BALLS Our resident psychic, Crystal, tells you your misfortune for this week Virgo After being snapped by the paparazzi while accidentally brushing past Taylor Swift on the street, you are quickly assumed to be her latest romantic entanglement, appearing in Take a Break magazine under the headline “Has Tay-Tay found true love at last?”. The same picture appears in Women’s Own a week later but with a jagged cut down the middle under the headline “On the rocks?”. A couple of months later, Swift releases a song about how much you “did her wrong” and that you were “just another playa”, which goes to No.1 in 17 countries.

Libra After years petitioning the local Planning Committee, the Zodiac finally gets permission for the construction of a library by adding the letters “R” and “Y” to the end of Libra. Your “scales” symbol is promptly changed to a picture of a bespectacled woman “shushing” and you are legally required to give your books and DVDs to anyone who asks for them. Ditto for free access to your Wi-Fi too.

Leo A post-Christmas dinner game of Trivial Pursuit takes a turn for the worse when an argument breaks out over which of the American great lakes is the biggest. By the time it’s resolved, both your parents are in hospital and you have stab wounds in your left leg. Turns out it was Lake Superior. Obvious when you think about it.

You try to start a Fight Club at your local pub, but the idea quickly dissolves when the only person who shows up is a guy known only as “Big Dave”, who duly beats you to a bloody pulp.

Scorpio With Jupiter in the ascendancy over the new moon, expect to find opportunity in adversity throughout December. There’s more full frontal funny girl action in Welcome To Me starring Kristen Wiig too. Anyway, those are just some examples of every cloud having a silver lining.

ASK CRYSTAL Dear Crystal,

I’m the warrior leader of a resistance movement fighting against the tyrannical rule of President Snow in a dystopian world where children are forced to kill each other for the entertainment of the social elite in a futuristic form of gladiatorial-style combat set in a simulated arena. Having won these “Hunger Games”, as they are known, I elected to fight back against this corrupt and fascist capitalist regime with the help of a trusted band of rebels and other true-hearted victors of the games, who help me inspire and unite the masses against their totalitarian oppressors. My problem is, someone hacked into my Apple account and uploaded a load of naked photos of me to the internet. How am I supposed to stand as an iconic symbol of hope against oppression when half my followers are fapping over pictures of my tits? Katniss

Dear Katniss,

Sorry my dear, I’d love to help, but I’m just having a rocking out moment to classic alt-rock album ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ by The Smashing Pumpkins. “Poooorcelina of the ooooosheeeeEEEEeee-unnnnn!” Dooooo-doo-dodoodle-ooooo, nuh, nuh nurrrrrrrr, weeeeeeeeee!” “Poooooor-suuuuuuu-leeeeee-naaaa.”

Dear Crystal,

I’ve recently been made redundant after 35 years doing the same job. I can’t afford to retire just yet, but no one will take me on at a reasonable salary due to my age. It’s been a month now, and I’m so worried that I haven’t even told my wife yet. The stress is driving me to drink. If it goes on much longer, we might even have to sell the house. What should I do? Roland

Dear Roland,

“I’ve never been to Australia, so I’m really looking forward to it,” said Gazza after announcing the five venue tour which begins in Adelaide (Adelaide Oval) on January 4. Perth (Astor Theatre, Jan 5) Melbourne (Comedy Club, Jan 6), Sydney (Enmore Theatre, Jan 7) and Brisbane (Tivoli, Jan 8) are the tour dates with Gazza promising a non-stop 2-3 hours of laughter. “I’ve been blessed to have such love from the fans in the game and as you know I’ve had a few problems along the way and throughout my life, but I’m still here and taking life one day at a time,” he said about his tour. “The show is full of laughter, with a few serious moments and an occasional tear if it gets to me when the audience show their appreciation.”

England soccer star’s one-man show comes to Australia Paul Gascoigne is arguably England’s best soccer player of the past 30 years - a cheeky, individualist who in 1990 became a world star. Even the great Pele said ‘Gazza’ was the best player of that World Cup tournament. Gascoigne’s career spanned 20 years in three countries - each time drawing hundreds of thousands to watch him play. The flick, the nutmeg and the outrageous chip for goal, all in his huge repertoire of tricks. Gazza earned 57 caps for England and was described as the ‘most gifted player of his generation’ by England’s National Football Museum. Now he’s coming to Australia in a

Gascoigne played for Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio in Italy, Glasgow Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton in a career that saw him score 83 goals in 388 first team appearances. Few can forget the tears in the 1990 World Cup semifinal as England lost out to Germany on penalties or the magical ruin and goal that saw England beat Scotland at the UEFA Championships in 1996. They are all in Gazza’s repertoire on this first tour Down Under. Peter Rowe caught up with Gazza for an exclusive Q&A for us. Give us a brief history of how long have you been doing your one-man show in the UK? On and off for about eight years, always with Terry Baker from A1 agency. He’s the person who knows me better than anyone else. And the best memory of playing for a club, and for England?

People say my best game for England was the victory against Holland in 1996. The crowd were chanting there’s only one Paul Gascoigne over and over. It was very special. The 1990 World Cup - Best memories? 1990 was my first major tournament. It was so sad to lose in the semi final. I would have missed the final, but it still would have been great for the lads to get there. Who was your boyhood football hero? I was a Newcastle fan as a boy. Once I started playing I loved playing with Bryan Robson who was such a great help to me as a young player. I loved my time at all the big clubs. Spurs was special and my two years at Rangers were just fantastic. Best coach? I had lots of great coaches. Terry Venables was exciting to play for and I had great times under him at Spurs and in ‘96 for England. Sir Bobby Robson was special and quite amusing in some ways. Walter Smith gave me a great time at the end of my career, but he wasn’t someone to disagree with!. Your best goal or move that set up a goal? A: I scored my best two goals probably for England v Scotland and the long run for Rangers v Aberdeen. Oh, and the free kick in the FA Cup. Toughest opponent? Hardest opponent, there were many. Ultimately Vinnie in the famous photo of him tackling me, lol, but Terry Hurlock was frightening as well.

shows to hear about them though. Half the show is about the funny times. Don’t come if you’re not broad minded by the way!! And the saddest… ? Saddest times were missing going up the steps when we won the FA Cup final. i was already in hospital. Obviously losing in the World Cup semifinal as well. I was very sad to leave Rangers as well and would have stayed longer if i had my time over again. If you could be 30 years younger and be back on the field at St James’, what would you change? I guess if i could have my career over again I’d have been a bit less reckless, but maybe my recklessness gave me an edge. I would definitely have gained an extra few inches in ‘96 and equalised!! What is the format of your show? Our show is mainly full of laughter with a few serious moments and occasional tear if it gets to me when the audience show their appreciation. Hopefully we will see loads of you during our run of five dates. I’ve been blessed to have such love from the fans and obviously I’ve had a lot of problems along the way and throughout my life but I’m still here and taking life one day at a time.

Do you like Japanese food and house? No problem, new event Haiku House will hit The Malthouse Theatre on the 16th of December for a celebration of Japanese food and western electronic music. Headlined by Dirtybird Records’ Justin Martin this will be fun.

Subsonic Music Festival heads back to Riverwood Downs Mountain just outside of Newcastle (about 4 hours by car from Sydney) for 3 days of camping with artists like Andrew Weatherall, Fred P, Pearson Sound and about 30 more acts. This one is a gem. Norway disco baby Todd Terje will be in the country with his live band The Olsens to headline a show at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on the 7th of December (before heading to Melbourne on the 10th of December to disco it up at the Forum Theatre). From the 8th to the 16th of December the UK’s Foreign Beggars will invade Australian shores for a national tour with appearances in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Check their FB page for more info. For some dirty warehouse vibes check out Australian indie/electro kings The Presets who will christen a brand new warehouse event series in Sydney’s Australian Technology Park in the heritage-listed Exhibition Hall on the 16th December. This should be special.

New techno venue XE54 has been the toast of the town and they continue their run in December with confirmed acts like Heiko Laux and Delsin Records’ Yaga. It’s on every Saturday night and it’s legit. Local techno crew Bunker will host the UK’s Perc on the 15th of December at The Sub Club. If you’re after techno then you have to attend at least one of Bunker’s parties.

Young crew Autosea will take over the inner-city crate and container bar Section 8 on Sunday the 17th of December for a day party with local house shaman Dreems. With limited capacity get there early as the queue’s can get wild…

Boxing day will see a beauty of party with Adelaide hero Late Night Tuff Guy playing disco before transforming into his DJ HMC

outfit for some storming techno. Going down at R Bar on the Riverbank Promenade, this might be our top pick for the whole month.

Perth The Fidelity Festival will debut on the 2nd of December at the Red Hill Auditorium with headliners alt-J, Cashmere Cat, Future Islands and many more. Put on your best outdoor bush door outfit as earthcore hits Mulberry on Swan for one day with a huge lineup of psy-trance and techno acts including John ’00’ Fleming, Morten Granau, Dave Angel alongside whole host of other atcs.

The Grand Poobah once again deliver the goods, this time on the Friday the 15th of December.

JACKMASTER Jackmaster is easily one the planet’s top party starters, and Australia will be blessed with his excellent credentials over the NY period. With an ear for a future classic track and a penchant for old-school gold, a Jackmaster set can wildly fluctuate between party tracks from different decades. We caught up with the Scotsman ahead of his headlining performance at Australia’s number one NYD event, Melbourne’s Let Them Eat Cake… Jack, thank you so much for chatting with me tonight- how are things going over in the US? All of the shows have been wicked Frankie, they’ve all had a really busy crowd, and I’ve just been playing b2b with Midland too which has been top. Playing Output, and then straight onto Miami was incredible. Sounds amazing- Midland is one of my closest mates from Leeds days, I would

have loved to see you guys play b2b! I have been looking at your gig listing on RA- you have Australia coming up- you must be buzzing?! Have you played many gigs in Oz before? Well I have never played these particular festivals before, so Let Them Eat Cake is one to really look forward to, and Lost Paradise too. The setting for LTEC looks pretty amazing. Usually I play Days Like This and mainly clubs, so New Years is going to be super special this year. I am in Bali for two weeks before the gigs too to generally keep my head down, allowing me to arrive with full vigour to Australia! It’s going to be roasting, bit different to Glasgow. What tales do you have from past Australian gigs? Oh, I have a few of those. The house and techno scene has really picked up over the last few years from my experience, and the crowds always wicked so it’s always a good party. The outdoor parties out there are amazing, there are also so many Scottish people there too, wherever I go actually – usually wearing their footy tops! Australia is a sneaky one, there’s some footage online of me playing there last time and I honestly felt like I was on the terrace at Space in Ibiza. Last time I was there, the day after my set we went out on my mate’s sailboat, and I must have been slightly inebriated

as I decided to dive off and swallowed so much salt water. Thankfully some strapping, musicly Australian dived in and saved me from drowning, I am not the best swimmer! Aww Aussies swooping in to save the day, glad they did! So when there’s no Scots in the crowd, or when you’re out on the road, what home comforts do you miss the most? I mostly miss my mates when I am on the road, the birthdays and the weddings. I also miss my couch, deliveroo and TV too. I think this is the reason why I haven’t left Glasgow to move to London or Berlin- it’s because I spend such little time there, that the time I do spend at home is so valuable. If I was in Glasgow and didn’t have this job, I think I probably would have got myself into a bit of trouble, it can be a pretty crazy place party wise. It has the best scene. When I see your sets online, I love the fact that you are so very open minded with your music choices, do you spend hours unearthing the old beauties? I am like a gannet, I have a pretty insatiable appetite for music. But the issue is, is that I don’t often scratch the surface of all of the music I find as I just don’t have the time, which is why I really want to start a new radio show. I want to exercise my broad taste in electronic music. I do spend a lot of

time on YouTube, ‘related search’ is a digger’s best mate- it is a never ending world of dance music, I do love dedicating my time to finding the oldies. So what was the first single you remember buying? I am a huge Oasis fan, so I believe my first single was Oasis which I begged my Mum to buy me. The first I remember actually buying, I remember going into Fopp record shop when I was really young and I asking or dance music, not sure why and it was a mix CD from a Leeds techno party with all the classics. Yes! You’ve always had a good ear for tunes then! So where do you feel most inspired? I definitely feel most inspired at home. This is the time where I end up hanging out with my mates, sharing the love and the most of all, the tunes. Jackmaster will be playing Let Them Eat Cake NYD in Werribee Mansion alongside Stephan Bodzin, Apparat, Ame, Mall Grab, Palms Trax and more. Tix available from letthemeatcakenyd.com.au

INTERVIEW WITH MIKE CALLANDER Hi Mike thanks for taking the time to chat with us today, as we were writing this interview you were preparing your live show build for the upcoming Kölsch Live event at the Forum. Give us a little run through what you’ve prepped and what fans can expect when you’re on stage? Thanks for the chat! Yeah I’m super excited to for this Kölsch live show. As far as I know he’s only playing live in three cities for this worldwide album tour, and Melbourne is one of those. As an extra bonus it’s happening inside the incredible Forum Theatre, and I’ve always wanted to play on that stage. To get the call to support such an accomplished artist with my own live show is an incredible honour, so I’m throwing a lot at it. I’ll be using a pretty unique combination of machines that allows me to take some very stripped back hooks from my productions and then completely reinvent the drums, bass and synth lines on the fly. I use a 4-track loop pedal that’s normally for guitars, a modular synth, another little mono synth and a drum machine to make up new remixes of my tracks on the spot, while the computer is the brain to keep the timing and structure more organised. It’s the best way I can think of to keep the live thing interesting for both me and the punters. I hate the idea of just running tracks from a computer and hitting play on certain elements at certain times… if I’m gonna do that I might as well DJ. So this way I’m using the computer to deliver a bit of structure, but still have the freedom, the flexibility and the chaos to build everything else around it with a degree of spontaneity. Because my background is in DJing I want to be able to respond to the crowd and have an interaction that’s not usually possible with these really polished electronic “live” sets. It’s all held together by the Model 1 mixer that’s mostly designed for DJing, so using that helps me put the whole thing together in a way that works for the dancefloor too. I hope! You were recently invited to test out the

PLAYdifferently MODEL 1, how was your overall experience? Do you think the PLAYdifferently could rival the industry standard Pioneer or popular Allen & Heath mixers? It’s a game changer. I don’t think it rivals other mixers, I think it blows them out of the water. Of course this is a personal thing, so I understand that some performers will have different priorities for features and layout, but for me this is how I want a mixer to be. I find myself more confident and more intuitive when I’m using it, and it has inspired me to be more adventurous with the way I present music for both DJing and live shows. School of Synthesis is your educational facility that you’ve co-founded with David Carbone in 2012. What are the top three tips you can give to budding producers out there? 1. Forget about being a superstar and start finding a way to enjoy the act of creation. If you enjoy it you’ll do it more often, and if you do it often you’ll get good at it, and maybe then (after a long time, unless you’re really gifted or really lucky) maaaaybe you’ll be a superstar. Even if you’re not, you will have had heaps of fun along the way. 2. Each time you start a new project, change the way you attack it. If you normally start with drums, try writing a hook without percussion, or if you normally start with a hook, make a nice drum loop first. You can always do the parts that come easiest later, but if you never get past the harder elements you just end up doing the same thing forever. This new approach will deliver different results and you’ll learn along the way. 3. Collaborate. I’ve learned more from the people I work with than I have from any class, tutorial or textbook. Melbourne’s Revolver Upstairs is known as your second home, what was the best night/ day you’ve ever had in the infamous establishment? I can’t remember the year, (maybe 2009?) but watching Matthew Dear tear the place apart at one of the early Summer Series parties was truly inspirational. It’s such an interesting spectacle to see that place

explode the way it does. There’s an energy that people recognise, tap into and share as soon as they walk into that back room. I’m very lucky to tap into that myself every Friday night as a resident. There has been such a massive boom in the DJ/production industry of late, what’s it been like to have watched it grow from your perspective? Like anything, the growth of this industry has pros and cons. What I love about it is that hard working artists have a chance to make a living from pursuing their passion. What I don’t like is that I need to sift through a lot more shit music to find anything I want to hear or play. You’ve been working closely with Kim Moyes quite a lot lately, forming a duo with him and now your upcoming record label Here To Hell. Talk us through your label a little, what’s it going to be about? The plan is pretty ambitious. We’ve got 5 records lined up for next year already, with the first arriving on vinyl in mid March, and then a plan to release them in quick succession. We’re doing it this way because the output is quite diverse, so we don’t want to give anyone time to develop any misconceptions about the kind of music we’ll release. The spirit of what we’re doing is informed by techno, of course, but there’ll be ambient, all sorts of electronic and even some Aussie rock! The first record is a couple of remixes that Kim and I have done for The Drones, and it’s the first time they’ve ever been remixed. We can’t wait to see those on the shelves and hear them in the clubs. You’re well regarded as one of Australia’s finest DJs and producers, if you were 18 years old today and starting again from scratch, what would you do? Learn the piano! Or any instrument for that matter. The older I get the more I appreciate when people can just sit down and make an instrument “sing” in a way that’s natural and human. A pretty amazing feat is you recently worked with The Avalanches on taking their studio productions into the live spectrum, is this line of work something you would like to do more of in the future? Working with The Avalanches was (and

still is) an absolute dream, because they’ve inspired me in so many ways, and I see in them a level of artistry that’s not common. To watch their albums grow into a worldwide tour was incredibly satisfying. Still it’s a LOT of work to build a show from scratch and then take it on the road, so I think to get involved on that level for other artists it will really depend on how much I love the people and the art. For now I’m happy working with them when they need it, and on my own stuff the rest of the time. With the new label, gigging every weekend and a lot of studio projects on the go I’m already spread pretty thin. You’ve spent quite a bit of time touring internationally, specifically in Berlin where you’ve played at Watergate, Rex Club and more. What has DJing overseas taught you that you wouldn’t have learned otherwise? I love that every city and its clubs or parties have a different personality. Rex in Paris is completely different to anywhere in Berlin, and both of those cities have a different vibe to what’s happening at home, and yet it’s nice that you can be at any of these and feel somehow familiar. The main lesson for me has been that what we are doing at home is as good as anywhere else, and that the artists in Australia deserve international success. You’re due to play some awesome shows this Australian summer season and beyond, what are three gigs you’re most excited for? Look out Let Them Eat Cake! It’s very exciting to play at the time and stage I’ve been scheduled (but can’t announce yet) because I’m wedged between some serious legends. Then there’s Rainbow Serpent, the best party I’ve ever played. I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve played there (it must be getting near 10?) and every time is an honour and bloody ripper time. And finally I am over the moon to be included on the lineup for Pitch Music and Arts Festival. After they launched earlier this year I saw some incredible footage and read rave reviews, so I am happy to experience that in March 2018. It’ll be a bit of a juggling act that weekend as I’m on the road with The Avalanches and they’re doing Golden Plains on the Saturday night, but we found a way to make it work and I can sleep some time after :)

EVERYTHING EVERYTHING INTERVIEW AHEAD OF FALLS FESTIVAL

It’s been over a decade now since Jonathan, Jeremy, Michael, and Alex met in Manchester and formed the band now known as Everything Everything. In that time the band has gone from strength to strength, with every new album released they continue to grow both as musicians and performers. These four already have a Mercury Prize nomination and three Ivor Nevello nominations to their name, and have just released their fourth latest album ‘A Fever Dream’. Paraic Walker catches up with bassist and backing vocalist Jeremy Pritchard ahead of their upcoming tour to Australia that will see them playing the famous Falls Festival in the New Year. Hello guys thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us! How is the tour going? Good thanks. We did a load of little shows in the UK to break in the new songs back in June, then the UK and EU festival season, then we played about 7 different record stores the week the album came out, and we’ve just done a US headline tour, so it’s been quite varied so far. You’re coming to Australia in

December, and playing a number of shows across the country, is there a particular city you’re most looking forward to playing? Will you get any time to explore? We’ve loved Sydney and Melbourne especially in the past, so it’ll be great to be back there. But we’ve never been to Byron Bay proper before, or Fremantle or anywhere on the west coast so we’re looking forward to that. We’re starting in Tasmania too, about which we know almost nothing! Australia’s got some crazy adventure sports, have any of you ever been skydiving or made it out to the Great Barrier Reef? Do any of you fancy jumping in a cage with a Croc or Shark? We went shark diving in South Africa a few years ago actually. It was hands down one of the most incredible things we’ve been through together. I would love to do it again. It must be hectic being on tour so much, do any of you have any funny rituals or things you can’t travel without? We listen to the first minute of a particular Tom Jones before we go on stage. It’s a really unhealthy habit we’ve developed... First stop will be Falls Festival, which has an epic line up again this year, is there anyone on the lineup you’re particularly looking forward to seeing? I saw Fleet Foxes earlier this year and they were amazing, so honest, such bare bones. So I’m looking

What is your process for selecting songs for the tours now? Do you change up the sets for different gigs/countries? Do you find certain countries have preference for a particular sound/album? We may change one or two songs here and there, night on night, particularly with the order we put them in. But we tend to go through different phases, rather than changing it drastically between shows or different countries. Some of the older songs bubble back up to the service with a renewed relevance, so we’ve been playing a five year old album cut called Choice Mountain again recently, for example. We’re quite aware of the difference between the festival version of ourselves and the rarities that people might want to hear at a headline show, so we’re constantly finding that balance between the two. Do you try to distribute it evenly between the four albums, or take note of what the fans want? It must be hard with the way your sound has evolved over the years. We try to do all of the above but it’s difficult. Inevitably you want to play new stuff, but at the same time you can have a great time with the people in front of you playing older songs, and some of the older material is cast in a new light by the newer songs. We also like to do one or two unexpected things in any longer setlist. It’s anther fine balancing act. We’ll rotate a few songs across any given tour, just to keep it fluid. Your latest album ‘Fever Dream’ came out in August, was the process for making it different from the other records you’ve

OUTPUT FESTIVAL PROMOTER INTERVIEW – FINAL TICKET ANNOUNCEMENT The inaugural Output Festival launched at Goat Island on Saturday 25th November. Set on their very own island within the Sydney Harbour National Park, the promoters have gone above and beyond to make this an event for Sydneysiders to remember. The promoter announced that tickets to Output Festival are 90% sold out so if you’re not one of the lucky ones who has secured their spot yet we don’t recommend you sit around much longer. The full line-up has now been announced, with 3 stages hosted by UNDRCtrl, Motorik and Ricardo’s. Artists appearing on the day: Optimo, Mall Grab, CC:DISCO!, Willaris. K [live], Fishing [live], Lancelot, Jensen Interceptor, Love Deluxe, Andy Garvey, Stereogamous, Made in Paris, Motorik Vibe Council, Luen Jacobs, Annie Bass [DJ Set], Francis Xavier, Body Promise, Ariane, For Life [live], Magic Pirate,

McLean & Mai and Ricardo’s Mobile Disco. We caught up with Stixxy, one of the driving forces behind the event to get some insight as to how this all came together and what we can expect from the festival. Output is a great concept festival that showcases some amazing local talent, what sparked the initial idea? I’ve been scouting some really interesting locations for a while now, and in the end it was just a case of committing to a date and rolling the dice! Having worked in the music industry since 2001 (splitting my time between London and Sydney) and having worked on a number of big festivals over those years, it’s always been an ambition of mine to create my own festival and push a scene that I’m deeply passionate about. It helps too when you’ve got a great team around you to help bring those ideas to life. Even the location represents local heritage. Was using a unique location a big part in the event

citation? Working with a national heritage site can’t be easy. Yes absolutely. Location, location, location!! I think we all crave to go and do something new and different from time to time. Mix it up a bit. The venue is certainly an attractive part of the overall sell of an event. And trust me, Goat Island is staggering in every way. I’ve been dreaming of hosting an event there for years! What’s the crowd like at your events? We’re expecting a pretty clued up crowd that know that their stuff. A combination of the more discerning club goer and newer kid on the block, keen to find his or her new favourite rave. Hopefully Output Festival will be the one! The line up has some great talent, who’s your top 5 up and comings that we should be getting exited about? Thank you. We’re really happy with how the line-up came together. Here’s 5 to deffo watch at Output and beyond… Mall Grab – more than just hype,

made? Was there a particular influence? We really honed in on two specific things from our musical upbringings; the 90s alt rock thing (and were perhaps less embarrassed about that than before), and the nascent electronica thing. We worked much quicker than before, were generally less neurotic. Alex and Jon were taking the songs quite far before they even got as far as the rehearsal room too, sometimes just on the road, which was a new aspect. I read somewhere that your name derives from the Radiohead song ‘Everything in its Right Place’. Despite clearly forging your own name for yourself over the years do you still look up to bands like Radiohead, or others, and want even more?

Who’s the hardest member to tour with? We’re all as bad as each other (we’re not, but a gentlemen never tells). What’s the name of your favourite pub? Volta in Didsbury, Manchester, UK. What’s the name of your favourite venue? The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, UK. Who’s your favourite band right now? Er, Bill Evans...? What was the last gig any of you went to see you weren’t playing at? I went to the opera last night! Does that count..?! It was my friend’s production of Carmen at Wilton’s Music Hall in London.

I think the naming thing happened subconsciously, we didn’t even realise at the time. But that record (Kid A) played a huge part in our musical understanding (or dismantling it!) and totally blew open the doors of possibility for us as kids. It used to come on to wake me up for school in 2000 so clearly it crept in..!

Thanks for your time guys and have a great tour!

But yeah, we still look up to them, and plenty of others besides. I’m sure even Paul McCartney still looks up to his heroes.

What’s the best game you play while on the road? Tension (it’s an app, Alex hates it). We also play some arcane parlour games, organised by Alex. One is called Mafia, the other is horrible guessing game with no name and no ending.

Wed 3 Jan: Metro Theatre, Sydney

this young NSW is literally blowing up around the world right now. Very exciting times for him.

environment to be yourself and a friendly dancefloor within the community.

CC:DISCO! – dare I say Australia’s answer to The Black Madonna! She has an encyclopaedia knowledge of music, and her sets never fail to surprise and delight me!

And a personal question, how did you first get into working in the music scene and events? How do you feel the scenes adapted over the recent years? I started out back in 1998 writing festival and club reviews for Mixmag and DJ Magazine and after uni took a couple of unpaid 3 month internships to get my foot in the door. One was at a nightclub that I later worked at for 7 years and the other a record label. At that stage in your career you simply need to learn your trade, show enthusiasm and get your hands dirty. If you’re passionate then you’ll get your break naturally in time. Like any movement, the dance music scene has of course evolved and I’ve experienced it for long periods in both London and Sydney. The key is to evolve with it and don’t be left behind!

Willaris. K – hotly emerging electronic artist, with stunning ears for music, much wiser than his youthful age. Really energetic performer too. Jensen Interceptor – one of the best DJs going and a superb producer. It’s no wonder Boys Noize signed him to his label and co-produces with him. Luen Jacobs – a real star in the making. He’s refined her sound in recent times and has impeccable taste in music. One to watch in 2018 for sure. For people who haven’t been to your parties before why should they make this the first? Output Festival is a first event of it’s kind… however the promoter team behind it – UNDR Ctrl (my baby) and the Motorik cru (they just hosted Daniel Avery @ OAF on the weekend) truly believe in pushing the scene, creating a safe

Moving To Australia – An Expat Interview Girl goes to Oz on a Working Holiday Visa - temps and meets a cute guy at work, fastforward 7 years and she’s still here! We catch up with ex-pat, Rosanna Malowney, 29, originally from West Yorkshire to find out more about the journey she’s taken to be able to call Melbourne home. What made you move to Australia? Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to live in Australia. My father's sister lives in Perth and I was lucky enough to visit a few times as a child and fell in love. I finally decided to fly over on a working holiday visa. When did you make the move and how long did it take you to get set-up with a home and job? This is my second time 'moving' over, the first time as a backpacker in 2010 - it took me about 10 days of looking to get temporary work and about three days to find a house share. The second time I moved back with my Australian husband in 2015, I think it took a little bit longer maybe

4-5 weeks to find a job. Luckily enough we had family to stay with, but as soon as our first pay packets were in, we found a place in about three weeks. Was it hard obtaining your visa? Did you use a migration agent? What type of visa did you apply for? Working holiday visa, super easy! All arranged via STA Travel, didnt even think about it. The Partner visa was a lot harder, well not harder, lengthier let’s say. I applied for this visa without an agent as I knew my relationship was genuine and looking through blogs I could see that we had a lot of evidence to support the application. The hardest thing was the waiting, I think we waited about nine months from submission of documents to approval. What's the best thing you've found about living in Australia so far? I would say the food (remember I'm based in Melbourne), such an eclectic mix of cultures and amazing quality. What's your favourite way to spend your weekends? Weekends are the best! A great weekend would be heading to the Mornington Peninsula for a hike, heading to a winery for a late lunch. Back to the city in the evening to catch up with friends for dinner and drinks. Sunday would be a leisurely brunch and then head to the beach. Finally finishing off with a Sunday session at one of the many craft breweries! What's the hardest thing you've found about living in Australia?

Obviously the distance and time difference is pretty hard. Have you travelled around Australia at all? If so where has been a highlight? Yes! So many highlights but the Bay of Fires, Tasmania on a sunny winter's day with noone else around was pretty spectacular. Do you hope to stay in Australia permanently or is your move just for a while? Permanently, I still have the travel bug but Melbourne will always be home. What's the one thing you miss about home? Family. What's the best thing about moving to Australia? Lifestyle. And what's the worst? Price of alcohol. If you had to give anyone who is moving to Australia a bit of advice what would it be?

I would say, save more money than you think. Everything seems really expensive on the pound, especially the beer (because it is!), don't expect to walk into a job, the job market isn't too great down here, be realistic. On a more positive note, make the most of all the wineries, breweries. Drink all the hipster coffee and eat all of the amazing food! What do you do for work? I work for a digital marketing agency as a Production Assistant. And is it a difficult industry to find work in there? I don't come from a digital marketing background but there are a lot of jobs around. Like anywhere they want you to be young and have heaps of experience. Just a matter of doing the leg work and making the right contacts. My previous role in the UK was a Project Manager for FMCG - specifically packaging design, I really struggled to find jobs in this area. by Sandy Dhaliwal

Get Admitted For Brunch At The Dispensary Currently living in Melbourne and eating out as much as physically possible, Arti Rajput is a travel writer and a contemporary fiction author. St Kilda is backpacker haven in Melbourne but also a popular haunt for expats and like-minded Melbournians. This suburb may have endless places to brunch, but The Dispensary sets itself apart. Located at 13 Brighton Road, St Kilda, it is true to its name. Decked out as a medical dispensary, they’ve crossed their T’s and dotted their I’s when it comes to décor. The concept behind this well-thoughtthrough theme is that the first combined dispensary and clinic in the British Empire was opened here. Australians put everyone else to shame when it comes to brunch and Melbourne is the top dog. With a quaint bench and pillows outside, The Dispensary makes it known that this is a coastal suburb. You may be a longer walk away from the sea, but the exclusivity of this location along with outdoor seating all has a charm of its own. I went for a cliché Sunday brunch with a few friends and the Melbourne weather heldup all morning. The rain started before we left, but sheltered by their big umbrellas, it was quite an enjoyable experience sitting outside. Inside the establishment you will find a tray with newspapers and the menus placed in a first aid box, making it feel like a waiting room but keeping a spacious, well-lighted feel. On the counter there are appetising pastries and muffins, with tiny flags in them. I dare you to resist. The Dispensary is an exciting place to eat, simply because it’s more pleasing to the eye. Not only is the décor astounding, but the food has merit of its own. Who wants avo and eggs, when you can try a new combo

or something a little more spontaneous and exciting, like the suburb itself?

Stand Out Brunches A few of the things that stood out for us on the menu were the ‘Veggie Breakfast Roll’, with avocado and feta, egg, rocket and hollandaise sauce for $11.90. Hollandaise sauce is a staple with eggs. The richness adds to many dishes. The zest in the hollandaise sauce complements the avocado. Note to self: it will get messy the minute you sink your teeth into the roll but you can always lick off the drops down your arms. Spillage is ‘lickage’, after all. ‘Dukkah Eggs’, with smashed avocado and feta, poached eggs, Egyptian dukkah and coriander on sourdough for $18.90. I’ve never tried dukkah eggs before. Dukkah is an Egyptian spice made up of herbs, nuts and other spices. Typically used as a dip, here the eggs are poached and have the spice dusted over the top. ‘Corn Fritters’, with bacon, avocado and feta, coriander and truss tomato for $18.50. You can add a poached egg for $2.00. The corn fritters are light and not doughy, like most others. It makes for a messy but delicious eat. The poached egg is a must, it’s a shame that you need to add it on as an extra but make sure you do. The avocado is seasoned with a hint of lemon juice that gives an extra punch to the taste buds. Normally my friend skips any additional sauces, but the homemade tomato sauce it’s served with is already a great companion to the mouth-watering dish. Her favourite

brunch meal since arriving in Melbourne. I’d never heard of half of these breakfast combinations until coming to Melbourne. The Dispensary takes it up a notch with flavours. You can’t go to brunch in St Kilda without ordering yourself a drink to go with it. I opted for the malted chocolate milkshake for $6.50, which didn’t last long because it was too good to stop. The others also had a smooth ‘Mango Elixir’ smoothie

and a coffee. Both cold drinks going down well in the heat. This great brunch spot serves itself well for a day when you want to get away from the St Kilda crowds, but not too far. If you go on a Sunday, have a relaxing morning eatingout at The Dispensary, then head on down to the St Kilda Esplanade for their bustling Sunday market.

Everything You Need To Know About Superannuation Lodged within the Australian Superannuation system is a savings account that you would not have had otherwise. From your very first pay check, the Australian Government have been collecting Super payments and slowly, but surely, you have unknowingly been saving your pennies on the side. The professionals from Backpay.com has told us everything we need to know, which is likely why so many travellers turn to their services to get back all the dollar bills they have been saving. Everything you need to know Ok. Declaring itself as super is a tad outlandish as superannuation is basically a pension arrangement. Yup. That’s not even barely stirring is it, let alone super. However, in Australia this is governmentsupported which also means that minimum provisions are enforced for employees, which is kinda nice. From July 1st 2013 employers were required by law to contribute a minimum of 9.25% of an employee’s ordinary time earning into a superannuation fund, which is called a ‘Superannuation Guarantee’. The detail that is really super is that this is an additional payment borne by your employer; it is not deducted from your gross pay. There are also plans to increase

the proportion to 12% by 2019, which is nice. The payment is based on your pre-tax earnings so if you earned $500 before tax for the month you should be entitled to an additional $46.25. However, do not be alarmed if your superannuation balance looks a little skinny as 15% is taxed by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and funds constantly charge administration and insurance fees which can amount to $5-10 per week. To be eligible the employee must be over 18, working over 30 hours a week and earning over $450 per month from one employer, so it would be beneficial to hold

a single job instead of several. As far as assurances go the Australian Government have that covered too as from 1st January 2014 employers were obligated to pay default contributions to an authorised MySuper product, with the most well known being AustralianSuper and AustSafe Super. This means that losing your payment due to a suspect provider is now far less a risk. That all sounds grand and all for Australian citizens yet for short-term visitors such as those on Working Holiday Visas the reality is a little different. Of course, if you meet the criteria then you can expect the contribution. Remember, as long as you earn over $450 a month from one employer you will be entitled. The arrangement is for any worker; whether permanent or casual, resident or non-resident for tax purposes (that would be you by the way). Arranging your superannuation is relatively straightforward. You can set up your own super account, which is the simpler choice if you intend of taking on temporary work or travelling while in Australia. You could also ask the bank to set up your super when you open an account with them or you can join the super account set up by the employer. If you do opt for the company’s super account and lose the paperwork do not fret, simply contact the ATO and they can help locate your super. For anyone being paid in cash it may seem great to have your wages in your hands to hold and then spend but you will be missing out on superannuation. You read that correctly. For all those lovely, crisp banknotes in your pocket you will be losing out on FREE MONEY. Working holiday makers are allowed to withdraw their superannuation either when their visa expires or whenever they leave permanently. This is known as the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment or

DASP. A point to note is that you must have left Australia before this can be paid; the application includes checking that any temporary visa has been cancelled by the Department of Immigration. Indeed, The Australian government must get really irked with these departures as they then take out a further 35% when you apply for the withdrawal. Bit harsh. Another point to note is that you are much better off claiming it sooner rather than later. In fact, if you do not claim your super within six months of leaving Australia, or within six months of the cancellation or expiry of your visa, the ATO will claim the money and it could be a while to organise its release from their tight grasp, especially from abroad. Still, the money is yours but if you are having trouble working out how to claim it then do not worry. If you have already claimed your taxback then the same company, and even the very same tax professional, should be able to assist you in claiming your superannuation. All you need to do is provide your membership details, fill in some forms and the tax professionals will do the hard work while you wait for the payment to arrive. Most charge a flat fee of around 15% for the service and you should receive your super within 28 days of the Australian Tax Office receiving your application. Superannuation may not exactly be super but it is free money that you should be entitled to when working in Australia. Setting up your account is simple and claiming it back once your visa has expired is not that hard either. Just do not forget about it, it is free money after all. For the Fastest Track To Receive Your Super, Visit backpay.com

1) Arvo. This is short for ‘afternoon’. ‘Morvo’ and ‘Evo’ didn’t catch on. 2) Bluey. This is used for an array of different things from ‘swag’ (because personal possessions were traditionally transported in a blue blanket covering) to a traffic ticket (because they were originally printed on blue paper) but the most entertaining answer is it is used to describe someone with red hair. Yes, you heard correctly. 3) Boardies. These are the shorts typically worn by surfboarders.

Learning the Australian Language! Planning on a move from U.K. to Australia in the New Year?! You may think that the one thing you don’t have to worry yourself with learning a new language. Think again! Over several centuries, those Australians have stretched and played with the English language as if it were a ball of dough! So it’s important to bone up on the sayings and phrases that you will undoubtedly encounter as you make a new life for yourself in Oz. Here is a selection of the key Australia phrases you are likely to come across:

4) Boogie board. A half-sized surfboard. For smaller surfboarders. 5) Chook. This is an affectionate term for a chicken, usually the kind kept as pets rather than the kind you see in the frozen aisle of Coles. 6) Coles. It’s a supermarket in case you were wondering. 7) Dunny budgie. Or you could just say ‘blowfly’. Not as funny but not as many syllables. 8) Handle. A beer glass with a handle, which speaks volumes about how much beer is appreciated in Oz. 9) Jaffle Iron. This is a sandwich maker, which is good for diets because most of the sandwich stays welded to the iron. 10) Longneck. A 750ml bottle of beer in South Australia. (See ‘Handle’.) 11) Schooner. The size of glass that is inbetween a half pint and a pint. Aussies tend to drink a schooner opposed to

a pint, as this prevents the beer from warming in the Aussie heat! 12) Mystery Bag. A sausage. Perhaps the best slang ever. 13) Nipper. A great name for a young ‘Surf Lifesaver’. This is a movement in Australia (and South Africa) that promotes safety at the beach and on the water for kids, kind of like the scouts but with swim hats. 14) Polly. A far too cute a nickname to describe a politician. 15) Postie. Are you seeing a theme here? 16) Sunnies. I think you are. 17) Thongs. No, not the bizarrely inadequate item of underwear but flipflops or sandals. This is an important distinction to make otherwise one or two conversations may end in red faces all round. 18) Ute. Short for ‘utility vehicle’, the kind you only ever saw in Britain on adverts for Castlemaine XXXX. So there you have it, some useful terms to help you get by during those difficult first few months. And if you need any help getting there, Seven Seas Worldwide are on hand with a top relocation service, sending household items from A to B and all the way back again if necessary. Check out the website over a Longneck for more information. www.sevenseasworldwide.com.

jobs. visas. shipping. mortgages. fx. health insurance. bbmlive.com A New Year Resolution: Come And Teach in Australia! If you’ve ever travelled to the land down under, you’ll know that the people of Australia are a pretty laid back species. What with the seemingly endless sunshine, amazing beaches and great opportunities it’s hard not to be! Now, imagine working in an environment like this. If you’re a teacher in the UK looking for a lifestyle change, look no further than Australia for your next destination. Say goodbye to rainy mornings and little work life balance and welcome excellent job opportunities and great rates of pay - who knows, you might even take up surfing! Why emigrate to work as a teacher in Australia? One of the biggest draws is the lifestyle. The sunny weather (which is fairly constant all year round depending on where you decide to relocate to) allows for much more time spent in the great outdoors. From water sports to hiking, there are many fun, exciting ways to keep fit which may not be accessible in the UK. There is also the draw of the cities; from the endless entertainment opportunities of Sydney to the gastronomic and shopping delights of Melbourne, every city has its own unique charm, and you’re sure to find interesting ways to occupy your time.

What Visa and Qualifications Do You Need to Teach in Australia? Finding a job in Australia may seem like a daunting job, but it need not once you know the steps you need to take. First is the matter of Visas; if you’re under 30, a Working Holiday Visa may suffice, but we aware that these only allow you in the country for a maximum of 12 months. Alternatively, you may be required to enter Australia as a skilled migrant or on a state sponsored visa. In terms of the qualifications

necessary, you’d need a university or college teaching qualification, such as an undergraduate professional degree or PGCE that is recognised by the Australian Government. You’d also need to meet all English language requirements, which may mean taking an IELTS test or equivalent English Language test. Don’t let these steps put you off - if you’re already working as a teacher in the UK it’s very likely you already fill these criteria.

Where Should You Go? Although the cosmopolitan lifestyle may initially draw you, it’s worth looking to more remote areas, such as the Northern Territory, for job opportunities as this is where there is a shortage. If you can’t resist the big lights of a city, it is perhaps best to become a casual teacher first and work your way up. If you need help working out where to relocate to, Smart Teachers can assist; they hire for a ‘wide range of roles [...] in independent schools across your local state and nationally.’ They let ‘you set the parameters on where you’d like to work, and in what capacity’, giving you complete freedom of choice. Top things to do in Melbourne on a Weekend So you’ve saved up enough and made the leap. Congratulations! You’re now officially on a working holiday in Melbourne with a whole new corner of the world to explore. Sound overwhelming? Don’t worry; we’ve pulled together just a few ways in which you can begin to discover the Melbourne area. Wine Tasting Well, you may as well start as you mean to go on! Melbourne is famous for its wine-tasting tours, which take in the historic Yarra Valley vineyards, mixing fantastic natural views with the additional upside of sipping chardonnay, pinot noir, and sparkling wine while you do it. The list of available wine tours is nearly endless, so shop around, check out some reviews before you

embark, and you’ll be sure to find something to suit your tastes and your budget. Walk the Golden Mile Ask most Australians, and they’ll point to Melbourne as the cultural heart of the country. And what better way to get to know your new home than to take a walk through its heritage? Not only is it a great activity for history buffs, but it’s a memorable way to orient yourself to a new city. The tour takes in the immigration museum, Melbourne Town Hall, and the Block Arcade, among many other sights and slices of history. Even better, you can take the tour absolutely free – just follow the markers and keep a smart phone handy as your tour guide. Hiking around Mornington Peninsula Sooner or later you’ll want a break from city life, so head out to Mornington Peninsula for 100+ kilometres of hiking trail – or try one of the smaller routes if you’re looking for more of a stroll. The peninsula is a rugged, breathtaking place of secluded bays and hidden coves, but is home to many gentle hiking paths for the casual walker. Pack some lunch for a picnic or stop in at one of the local villages, and you can easily spend a day here. Melbourne Zoo The zoo is always a great day out, whether you’re with friends, family,

or maybe even a new Australian beau. As Australia’s oldest zoo, Melbourne Zoo comes highly recommended, and can be found just a short car or tram journey from downtown. For a different experience, try the Roar ‘n’ Snore overnight camp in the former elephant house, and explore the mystery of the zoo after dark. As for its residents, expect the usual assortment of tigers, elephants, gorillas and crocs. Crikey! Phillip Island Located on the far side of the Mornington Peninsula from Melbourne, Philip Island provides an excellent getaway, and can be reached by car or bus via the San Remo Bridge. Home to some of the most reliable surf conditions in the country, Phillip Island also boasts the Penguin Parade, as Little Penguins return to shore after a day’s fishing. For the petrol heads, the island also has its own Grand Prix Circuit. We’re just scratching the surface here, but we’re confident that starting with these will give you the thirst for adventure to discover the rest of what Melbourne has to offer. Bringing British Goodies to Australia for Christmas

We’re aware that Australia may not offer the white Christmas and Mum’s roast that you get back home, but there’s no reason you need to spend it alone or without festive cheer.

Christmas in Australia is a different affair to the one you may be used to back in the UK and Ireland. Instead of three feet of snow, there are miles and miles of beautiful beaches, and due to the opposite seasons everyone’s walking around in bikinis, swimming shorts and flip flops rather than puffa jackets and boots. A hot dinner of meat, potatoes and gravy will be the last thing you crave when the sun is beating down and the thermostat reads 30 degrees Celsius. Christmas dinner here is more of the salad, fish and cocktail variety, and will most likely be served up on the beach from a public BBQ. Should you be missing home comforts and being surrounded by family, you can take half an hour to Skype them as they unwrap presents in front of the tree and try to make you feel involved. If they haven’t

sent you a hamper full of goodies (are they still punishing you for leaving?), have no fear! Treats from Home offers the perfect solution for you to grab you favourite British goodies! Biscuit hampers, advent calendars, Cadbury’s selection boxes, Jelly Tots tubes and Jacobs Cheeslets, you will not miss out! There will also be a whole host of Christmas parties, Boxing Day parties and all manner of festive events to keep you entertained. So fear not, your first Christmas Downunder may not be that traditional, but they’ll be plenty of places offering festive meals and celebrations to keep you more than entertained – and if the family don’t send you that hamper of goodies, forget them, you’ll be getting a tan for Christmas! Head to www.treatsfromhome.com.au to grab you favourite Christmas goodies!

A SUNNY CHRISTMAS ON FRASER ISLAND To find out just what it’s like on K’gari (aka Fraser Island) during the festive season, we put our questions to Hana White (aka Mumma Bear) of Drop Bear Adventures. What is the best thing about Fraser Island at Christmas? For me, nothing beats a good swim during the heat of the Christmas season, so I would have to say the freshwater lakes. The cool, crystal-clear freshwater is the perfect temperature in the festive sun. It’s lovely and lukewarm, so you can dive right in and stay in there until you’re all pruned up! What are the swimming opportunities like? K’gari is home to more than half of the world’s perch dune lakes. Although you can’t get to all of them on the island (unless you are up for some serious bush bashing), you still have over 10 of them. There are also beautiful freshwater creeks pumping out thousands of gallons of water every hour on the beach, so you’re never short of a swimming spot on the island.

Top 20 Things to Do in Kuranda, Tropical North Queensland If you are heading to the skyrail you will also visit Kuranda, the village in the rainforest of Tropical North Queensland. And you may be surprised by how much there is to do in the quaint little rainforest village. There are 2 very popular ways to see Kuranda and this is with Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Kuranda Scenic Railway. After arriving via Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, make sure you leave yourself at least 2-3 hours to wander around Kuranda's shops and markets, stop by the cafes and art galleries, explore the rainforest walking tracks or take in a boat cruise along the Barron River and visit a couple of wildlife attractions and so much more! The beauty of Kuranda is everything is close by, so it is easily explored on foot. There is a diverse range of restaurants and cafes with great local food as well as international flavours and they are all within a five-minute walk of each other. Food crawl anyone? Shopping is the other great experience when you wander the village. Put on your hiking shoes and take one of the many scenic walking tracks and trails in Kuranda where you can explore the rainforest and see then iconic Barron Falls.

Top 20 things to do in Kuranda 1. Visit the world famous Kuranda Markets every day of the week 2. Play a game of mini golf, hidden in a lush rainforest setting 3. Watch old-fashioned candy being made (and then buy it and eat it!) at the Kuranda Candy Kitchen 4. Relax and savour local coffee at one of the many quirky cafes 5. Say hello to a life-size Allosaurus Dinosaur 6. Buy a home-made ice cream from the world famous Red Ice Cream Van 7. Check out how bees make honey (and taste it at the honey house.. yum!)

8. Cruise the calm waters of the mighty Barron River on the Kuranda Riverboat 9. Explore the picturesque rainforest walks around the village 10. Discover the amazing world of butterflies at the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary 11. Hand feed kangaroos and wallabies at Kuranda Koala Gardens 12. Capture the Barron Falls in all its glory 17. Ride an ATV quad bike through the rainforest. For thrills and spills go with Down and Dirty Quads and for a more relaxed journey through tropical fruit orchards and rainforest check out Barron Falls Estate 18. Make sure you include a visit to Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Kuranda on your next Tropical North Queensland Holiday. Visit: www.skyrail.com.au to find out more.

Where’s the best place to relax at Christmas on the island? That’s a little trickier to answer as the island itself is so relaxing, but if I had to choose my favourite hammock spot, of course, it would be the front garden at the Drop Bear Beachcamp. I love finding a shady spot with ocean views and knowing I’m close to all the benefits a fridge brings during the festive season! What wildlife can we expect to see on K’gari? Summer is when most wildlife comes out to play. Typically, you can expect to see goannas, eagles, turtles, snakes, spiders, all sorts of crabs, a whole load of birds,

echidnas (the Aussie version of a hedgehog) and, of course, our famous dingo. We also spot lots of marine life such as dolphins, manta rays, Humpback Whales and sharks. It’s a wildlife frenzy on K’gari. What’s your favourite place on K’gari? My favourite place without a doubt is Sandy Cape. Only a few lucky people make it up to the tip of the island every year. It’s a bit tricky to get to, but once you’re there, you couldn’t feel further away from everything and that’s its charm. Totally cut off from any creature comforts but surrounded by untouched beaches and piercing blue waters. I’ve been lucky enough to go there six times in my seven years on Fraser and one of those visits I shared with close friends and family as I said “I do”. And most importantly, how do you celebrate Christmas on K’gari? We love to make Christmas extra special for all those who come to join us during the festive season! We decorate our camp and retreat to ensure there’s heaps of festive cheer! Being half Welsh I do occasionally miss the home comforts that cold Christmas brings so ensuring our guests have a bit of home here is super important! And where possible we deliver Christmas treats! Christmas on K’gari is like no other, and you can be sure that all of our beautiful Drop Bear family will deliver a festive season to remember! Drop Bear Adventures run tours of Fraser Island throughout the year. Find out more at www.dropbearadventures.com.au

5 Travel Hacks That Help Traveling Around Australia With Mulgas Adventures Mulgas Adventures have been taking thrill seeking adventurers on fun and exciting tours for many years. With the environments in which they explore; such as the Red Centre, Uluru, Alice Springs and Northern Territory being as equally hostile as they are beautiful, their Tour Guides have adopted some travel hacks which they recommend travellers should also consider when joining the team on their explorations.

3 - Solar Power Battery Charger “I love gadgets that work whilst walking, attach a solar powered charger to you pack and plug it in, this saves fighting for the power at camp if there is any available. With the number of completely clear sunny days being 200 a year on average and the average hours of sunshine being 9 hours a day, there is plenty to go around.”

4 - Swimwear

Here is what Mulgas suggest!

“Yes there is water around! Summer temperatures can be high but there may be an opportunity for a swim. If exploring central Australia, there are many waterholes sheltered by amazing gorges. You just have to find them!” Or like Mulgas, Know exactly where they are!

1 - Comfy Shoes

5 - Say G’day and Wave

“With beautiful walks it is essential to have shoes that feel great on your feet, this will lessen or eliminate blistering and provide the support you need so you can enjoy the scenery and not worry about your feet.”

2 - Camelback/ Hydration Pack “With the outback having such a dry climate, it is easy to become dehydrated. Hydration packs make it ten times easier to stay hydrated; I prefer a 3 litre size pack which should be enough for a few hours of hiking. I take it everywhere, even while exploring cities as it saves you money and protects you from the heat.”

“With the area being so remote and the population so small, it’s essential we all get along! Don’t be afraid to say hello or wave to a passing car, it could help you out at a later stage of your travels.” It most certainly helps to gain knowledge of the small hacks which make travelling around Australia that much easier and now with Mulgas Adventures advice, you’ll be well on your way to make the most of your Aussie experiences. Experience Something Different in Darwin Northern Territory’s Darwin is the only tropical capital in Australia, and at times feels a world apart from the rest of the country. It’s immense natural heritage, dramatic history and strong indigenous culture make for a whole host of unique experiences for you to try.

Be Amazed by Planes

Meet the Aborigines

It takes a day tour to fully take in the rich greenery and amazing natural beauty of the place. There are massive termite mounds, thundering waterfalls you can (try to) swim up to and colossal crocodiles lurking around the Adelaide River. To get a good look at them, it’s best to take a boat trip, then have dinner by sunset before heading home.

Aboriginal culture is a vital part the Northern Territory: Pukadal Aboriginal Cultural Tours is a local operator which provides authentic visits into Kakadu, so you can experience this first-hand. The family-owned business avoids overcommercialisation and focuses on genuine interaction with the hosts. You’ll learn about spear-throwing, didgeridoo, slapsticks, bush tucker and natural medicines alongside traditional greetings, Dreamtime, basket-weaving, all right next to a scenic billabong. About as Australian as you can get.

Take a Dip with Some Crocs The only place in the whole of Australia which offers the exclusive ‘Cage of Death’ experience, Crocosaurus Cove is the perfect place to get up close and personal with the grisly creatures. Put on some goggles and dive underwater in a giant glass cylinder to come face to face with a full-grown crocodile and cross your fingers that the attraction doesn’t live up to its name.

The Darwin Aviation Heritage Centre is one of the most incredible collection or wartime aircraft in the world. The award-winning display, with a range of Australian, American and Japanese planes is easily accessible by bus from downtown Darwin, and worth visiting even if you don’t like planes. The collection is a living showcase of the key players of WW2 in the Pacific, and houses everything from Spitfires to the ‘flying fortress,’ a massive B-52 bomber that barely seems to fit in a hangar. This massive construction is only one of two contained outside the USA.

Take a Trip into The Depths of The Top End

See the Sunset at Mindil Beach Markets After a busy day that probably featured lots of crocodiles, watching the sun set over Mindil Beach is a must while in Darwin. The markets are held between 5pm and 10pm during the dry season (April to October) on the waterfront by Darwin’s casino. You can browse the hand-crafted goods for a more authentic souvenir, or simply lay back on one of the grass with dinner (you’ll find cuisine from pretty much everywhere) and some seasonal fruit from the region, or perhaps a French pastry. Sunset culture in Darwin is practically a way of life. To book your very own Crocosaurus Cove experience visit crocosauruscove.com

Located in the northwest of the state, there’s everything from savannah to the sea with plenty of surprises. There are so many highlights

in the Kimberley region, it’s impossible to pick just one. While you may be sad to leave one, you’ll be amazed at what lies just around the corner. Other lush oases include Manning Falls, the Zebedee Springs, Bell Gorge and Windjana Gorge, the latter of which is home to harmless freshwater crocodiles. Escape to Kangaroo Island this Christmas Head over to Kangaroo Island for a festive season with a difference… Swap cranberry sauce for home grown honey, chocolate-brown reindeer for chocolate-brown kangaroos, and soft white snow for soft white sand, and you’ve got yourself Christmas on Kangaroo Island. South Australia’s largest island is just a ferry ride from Adelaide, and welcomes you with incredible natural beauty, from the flourishing bush to the rugged cliffs and many bays and beaches. Bathed in warm sunshine during December, you can truly explore this wonderland for what it’s worth. From the wilderness of Flinders Chase National Park in the southwest to the northeast town of Kingscote, there are many attractions spread throughout Kangaroo Island.

renowned for being one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. With a sweeping curve of white sand and turquoise waters lapping the shore, it’s the perfect place to lie back and let the sun do its work. If you’re not one for sitting around, you can also try your hand at fishing, surfing and kayaking, or head up to Little Sahara – Kangaroo Island’s only sand dunes – and sand board your way down or get to grips with a quad bike.

Proud of local produce such as honey, eucalyptus oil, wool, wine and lavender, you can meet the farmers and growers and purchase a gift or two. It’s so popular, in fact, that you can follow a trail to farm gates and cellar doors, exploring Kangaroo Island as you do so.

The coast is also where you will find Flinders Chase National Park. One of the most popular destinations on Kangaroo Island, it is home to two very unique geological formations. At the end of a wooden boardwalk is Remarkable Rocks; 500 million years old, these granite boulders have taken on an incredible shape, which justifies the name given to them – a particularly special photo opportunity with the ocean in the background. On the southwest tip of Flinders Chase National Park is Admirals Arch. Located near Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, this rock bridge was once a cave, and still holds the stalactites that dangle from the ceiling.

The natural habitat of Kangaroo Island not only makes it ideal for local producers, but also for wildlife. Some of the best times you can have on Kangaroo Island are when in the company of the sea lions on Seal Bay, or when you find a family of kangaroos feasting upon on a headland. There are also echidnas, koalas, pelicans and dolphins that provide a plethora of wow moments. The warm temperatures make December a great time to head to the coast. Vivonne Bay is
