Launching a dedicated ‘Fan Zone’ to celebrate this year’s anticipated FIFA tournament, Coogee’s legendary beachside hangout is pulling out all the stops…

As World Cup fever slowly sweeps the nation, football fans from all corners of the globe will join forces to watch in trepidation as the results of the 2018 FIFA World Cup dramatically unfold. From Brazil to France, to Australia to Russia, 32 teams will battle against one another in a bid to win this year’s esteemed championship title.

For those who aren’t planning to trek across the Pacific, Coogee Bay Hotel will be swinging open the doors of its iconic music venue to host a hub of FIFA-fuelled fun. SELINA’S legendary stage, which has welcomed all kinds of musical greats over the years, (everyone including Nirvana and INXS to Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel have performed there) will be transformed into the ultimate football playground with retro arcade games, soccer-themed amusements, live match screenings and a throng of live music and entertainment.

A bit of an institution on the sports scene, its enviable beachside location together with its screenladen Sports Bar and sprawling garden are more than enough to draw in the crowds, but with the addition of this year’s World Cup Fan Zone, things are about to heat up for bonafide footy fans.

World Cup ’18 Fan Zone From 15 June, SELINA’S will become a bubbling hub of activity, with plenty of football paraphernalia to get you in the spirit.

Offering a fun-filled space for all to enjoy - you can just as easily rock up with your mates as you can with the kids - this playing field comes stacked to the rafters with all kinds of sporting amusements, along with a jam-packed calendar of activities, all of which are entirely free.

Football nets adorn the walls and ceilings, whilst sofas and giant football beanbags are perfectly positioned beneath the mammoth 250 inch projection screen, where you can catch all the live action.

But it’s not just about sitting down to watch the game, this immersive space has enough to keep you entertained from morning, noon and night. Look forward to limited edition burgers and buckets of chilled Bud, football-themed trivia and singles’ mixer nights (singleton’s wanting to find their football match should clear a space in their diaries on 27 June) and FIFA gaming comps every Saturday where you can show off your soccer skills to win some great prizes.

Live bands will take to the stage every Friday featuring some of the area’s best local talent (Rackett, Marvell and Shag Rock are set to play over the course of the games), and for one night only Coogee United FC will hang up their football shirts to strut their stuff on SELINA’S stage (yes, there’ll be swimwear) in a hope to be crowned Mr World Cup. Prepare to get excited ladies.

For kids (and big kids) there’ll be gaming sections dotted around (think arcade games, foosball, air hockey, Playstations and virtual headsets), and don’t forget to dust off your best Aussie soccer colours to support the lads, and be in with a chance of winning some fab World Cup memorabilia.

Optus Sport will broadcast live from SELINA’S during the Australia vs. France game, and they’ll be interviewing throughout the course of the evening, so be sure to get your game face on - or indeed bet on who you think will win, as there’ll be betting facilities both in the Fan Zone and Sports Bar. Lastly, in a build up to the final, the Fan Zone is set to throw an epic closing party with live DJs, games and exciting giveaways.

It’s come round again! Yes, the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia this year will be kicking off on the 15th June (in Australia) with the hosts Russia taking on Saudi Arabia. The game starts at 12am (AEST) but, that won’t be the earliest kick off time, unfortunately with match times running between 8pm and 5am AEST. There will be quite a few games starting in the early hours of the night from 12am to 3:30am (AEST) but luckily some of the major matches including France v Australia (7pm AEST), Portugal v Morocco (9pm AEST) and Brazil v Costa Rica (9:30pm) to name a few. Who Are Ya? WHO R YA? Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Aussie... It’s finally here, late nights at the pub or lots of coffee and a solid excuse (for some) to be late to work for a whole month. For us lucky folk Down Under, the World Cup is yet again not being shown at friendly times but we’re going to make the most of it and get involved by using this time to explore the best bars and venues around Australia that will be representing our various countries to show the World Cup LIVE & LOUD! Wendy’s Secret Garden Behind Wendy’s Secret Garden is a true to life heartwarming story of love. When artist Brett Whiteley passed away in 1992, his grief stricken widow, Wendy Whiteley channeled her love and emotional tumult into developing an abandoned train yard space into a garden. In terms of the historical value of this pub, it’s a gem of a heritage building which has been restored. Its split level designed deck is absolutely perfect to spend a quiet evening with friends over a pint of some finely crafted beer, artisan wine or cocktails. Burgers are big here and taste absolutely delicious. Flipside burger orders are perhaps the most sought after item on the menu and can be ordered from the bar itself.

Ezra Pound While there are plenty of pubs in Perth, styled after the American Prohibition era,

Ezra Pound is an experience all together. In fact, if prohibition was still enforced, guests would be in the safest place as this pub in Perth is not known to many and is quite hard to find. Hidden in a narrow laneway, the niche bar is accessible only through a car park. Named after a London based British poet, the pub is big on cocktails.

The bar staff would be more than happy to pour out any request that’s not on the menu. Hungry guests can find satisfying nibbles to go down with drinks. Beer bottles are served in paper bags to add that touch to coincide with its quirky ambience. Here amid the graffiti smeared walls of Ezra Pound’ laneway guest will taste some unusual brands such as Kooinda Valhalla Ale. The crowd is a mixed bag, but the experience is definitely other worldly.

The Bird pub comes with a bit of history.

Its walls of exposed brick have hosted bands and DJs, earning it a name as a popular live music hang out. Guests should not be put off with its size, and once one begins spending time here, they begin to understand why it’s perhaps the coolest bar in Perth. During the 1920s the buildings now courtyard was home to a brothel which then later was converted into a butchery.

The charring from the smoked beef and other meats is still visible on the walls. In 2010 the place took on its current theme of the hippest live music venue in Perth. It’s a convivial atmosphere that pervades the ambiance at The Bird especially in its open air spaces. This is definitely a place not to be missed and definitely packs in some attitude.

Polychrome East-London-based Polychrome, who channel the spirit of Cocteau Twins with the electronic ecstasy of M83, are made up of Oliver of The Bronze Medallists and Victoria of Victoria and Jacob. Victoria and Jacob have been championed by the likes of NME, Time Out, The Line of Best Fit, Uncut and DIY to name a few, and have also supported The Mystery Jets, Com Truise, Daughter, and Katy B. Oliver, frontman of indie electronica band Bronze Medallists (also solo performer/activist Olly the Octopus AKA ‘Boris Johnson’s Nemesis’ – City AM), has worked with the likes of Lucy Rose, Mt Wolf, L.A. Salami, and been supported by Radio 1, Radio X, Radio 2, and 6music to name a few.

Hey Polychrome – welcome to BBM. What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to you so far this year?

Releasing our debut album and playing it live for the first ever time! It was the culmination of a lot of hard work and it’s exciting to see it go forth and hopefully multiply....

For those who haven’t heard your music yet, how would you best describe your sound?

Answering this question always reminds me of the characters in the Mighty Boosh wandering around the desert looking for ‘The New Sound’, an enigmatic undefinable ghost you can’t hold on to. I suppose we searched around our own desert (in

the Scottish highlands) and we bleached out some analogue synths and added way more reverb than you should ever do and added some old drum machines. Sort of colliding dream-pop and synth-wave if compound-worded-genres are your thing...

How did the project Polychrome materialise?

I produced Victoria and Jacob’s debut album (Vicky’s previous band), and stole her from Jacob to start our own project together.

Only joking! Jacob and her still work together too and he has his own solo stuff under the name Yukka, which is great.

He played at our album launch actually.

You wrote a lot of the album in Scotland, how does everyday life there differ to somewhere like London?

Waaaaaaaaaaay more chilled, metaphorically and literally, and a lot less breathable particulate matter.

It rains a bit more too but it’s somehow nice rain that you don’t mind schlepping through.

It’s actually so beautiful there and so attractive to tourists it’d be even more crowded than London were it not for the midges keeping the human population under control.

Do you think the Highlands influenced your sound at all?

I think geography has a huge influence on creativity. Have you ever watched Skandi Noire?

When was the last time you had a proper holiday and where did you go?

Ooh, its been a while. I’m quite into surfing (yes in Scotland, yes I’m mad), so I try to go somewhere vaguely warm to do a bit of that when I have the chance. Like Portugal, or the Canaries.

Who would be your dream collab?

Our latest single ‘Dreaming About You’ was sort of about

Ryan Gosling. If you’ve seen La La Land you’ll know he can really sing. That would certainly make Vicky’s day if we could record the follow up with him. ‘Dreaming About You 2’ - It works on so many levels...

Pale Waves Interview – Heather Barron-Gracie Bristling with dark energy, pure pop sensibilities and new wave synergy, Manchester’s Pale Waves make their debut appearance in Sydney and Melbourne this July.

Fresh from confirming themselves as the band to watch at this years’ SXSW Festival, the indie-goth four piece have announced a run of shows off the back of hugely popular singles There’s A Honey, Television Romance, and the recently released ALL THE THINGS I NEVER SAID EP, containing Radio 1 playlist singles Heavenly and New Year’s Eve. Hello Heather, thank you for taking the time to talk with us today. How has your week been going?

Hi! My week is going well thank you! We’ve been in the studio for around three weeks making our debut album so that’s been my week so far…..

You guys had a massive 2017, and you seem to carrying that momentum through with you this year. Were you surprised by all the hype surrounding you now, or do you feel its outcome four years hard work on your part?

The momentum around our band is everything we could ever ask for. I started writing music as a young child and all I ever wanted was for people to listen and care. So now that we’re finally receiving recognition it’s really satisfying. We work so hard as a band and I hope people know that when they see the hype we’re creating!

How have you managed your sudden life change?

Can you still walk around your local supermarket in Manchester and not get stopped by one adoring fan, or another?

My life has definitely changed over the past year quite significantly. I went out in Manchester for the first time in a good while and got stopped a few times by Pale Waves’

fans. It’s really lovely, I adore meeting people that love our band it’s the best feeling, you almost feel an instant connection with them because you both share love for something in common.

You released your debut EP ‘ALL THE THINGS I NEVER SAID’ in February. That must of been an amazing feeling to finally get it out there. Can you tell us a bit about what influenced your song choices on this EP? Some songs just instantly stood out as the ones to be on the EP. However Heavenly and The Tide were songs that we have had from the start of Pale Waves, so it made sense to release them in the period before our debut record.

You have mentioned in other interviews that there is a full-length album on the way, what can we expect? Will it differ much from the EP? Yeah it will definitely differ from the EP. Albums are great because it gives you a whole new world to show how creative you can be. The album will basically be an insight into my mind and my world. The songwriting is more honest and in-depth than I’ve ever gone before.

Did you have to change the songwriting process when thinking about a full-length album? Where do you even begin? Lyrics, guitars, base line or can it differ with every song?

Our songs can start by various ways usually a song will begin from me and my acoustic, or Ciara will write a song musically and present it to me then we join forces I making great pop music. We’re a dream team when it comes to writing; there’s no other person I would trust with my music other than Ciara.

You and Ciara met at University, in Manchester, what were both of you studying? Did you have any plans for a career outside of music, or was this always in your mindset?

We were both studying music. Ciara and myself always knew from a young age that we loved music and we would grow up doing nothing else.

You are coming to Australia this July, playing two shows in Sydney and Melbourne, are you excited to playing to fans on the other side of the world?

Yeah, so excited! It’s everyone’s first time going to Australia

so as you can imagine we can’t wait to get over there.

Did you ever imagine you’d be flying for a whole day to play your music to fans? I hope you are all comfortable flyers!

It seems pretty surreal that we can travel so far from home to play our music to people that want to hear it. We’re not great flyers, but we’re happy to do it come and play for our fans over there!

What has been your career highlight so far?

Playing our biggest show in London a few days ago. There’s nothing like watching your own band grow and move into bigger venues.

How would you describe Pale Waves sound in three words?

Following last month’s interview feature with Sonus Festivals After Movie Director, we got inspired to hear more about Croatia where the festival is held. This brought us to reaching out to Felver, one of the Sonus resident DJ’s who’s been Zagreb based for 26 years.

Croatia has fast become Europe’s number one festival clubbing destination and every year the country which has a population of just 4.1 million his visited by over 16 million tourists, many who visiting for their unique festivals that are set in absolutely stunning locations such as Pag Island, where you’ll find Sonus.

part, it’s a wonder. So, it is very difficult, clumsy on my part for that matter, to name a few interesting places. But, let’s do it… the wines of Ilok, plains of Slavonia, hills of Zagorje, my Zagreb, Istria’s magic, Kornati with its sail, the wonderful Split, the landlocked lakes, the mountains if you feel like it..., just take a pick.

From boat parties to club takeovers, beach raves to all day kicks ons, there’s a party for everyone and Sonus has been representing and leading the way for the global tech house scene for 6 years. Enough from us, here’s what local legend Flava has to say…

There are other locations in the Balkans that also throw great parties and festival such as Serbia but it’s quite clear Croatia is the place that has risen on the map.

Why do you think this is?

The Croatian coast makes one of the biggest stages to organise clubbing and festival-type events. A thousand islands to choose from, and it’s been quite a spur for the hoist of interest. The Belgrade scene, the traditional zing to Sarajevo dynamics, Slovenia’s Ljubljana, all the great places.

Croatia follows an upward trend because of a persistently had work by all of us. And it pays off.

What’s your name and what do you do?

My name is Felver. Marijan Felver. Nice of you to have called in, much appreciated.

I’ve been a Zagreb-based DJ for the past 26 years, trying to spearhead music throughout Croatia to the best of my ability. True, being a DJ is my primary calling, but I’ve tried to have my career evolved by working as a radio musical editor and a program manager for many clubs. Another thing I take very seriously is promotion, as it puts me in touch with people in whose work I’m interested. I think of it as an audience-toaudience connection, by putting their-tomine audience together.

Where are you originally from?

Natural breed of Zagreb!

Croatian tourism has exploded in the past few years. Do you feel this has been a good thing for the local music scene?

Over the past twenty years, the Croatian electronic scene has changed at so many levels. New blossoms and critical points, the whole nine yards. I would think that the most important change has to do with the size of the scene. Nowadays, it’s a way bigger, more dynamic and much more developed. This may be thanked to the hard work of local DJs and a multitude of summer festivals across the Croatian coast in the last ten years or so.

Croatia has a huge festival scene from Soundwave in Tisno, Ultra in Split, Sonus in Zrce to Outlook in Pula. Which is your favourite?

Well I either performed at or visited each of these places. A performer or a visitor, I always had a wonderful time. Sonus linked in with me from its very beginning, and while Istria is one of my all-time favourites, I must say that my heart goes with Zrće and Pag on this one.

After a big night out do you go for some Čevape or a Burek?

Always secretly on my menu, but I save it for not so big occasions. I keep it for the more ordinary times. You know, when you’re not so much impressed with other things that would otherwise distract you from Ćevapi and Burek.

What would you say is a must-see destination in Croatia?

Croatia is a very diverse country, a true beauty. Not a big country, but with scores of things to see, even if you just talk about Zagreb and its vicinity. The coast and the island, more than a thousand of them for that matter, would the be point to start your journey. The indented coast would just take much more to sail around, but it’s not such a bad thing, right? The continental

How do you compare it to Ibiza?

Never been to Ibiza, only heard it was fun.

Will make my way to it as soon as I get a chance. It must be quite the same sentiment as over here, but there should be difference, otherwise I would not want to go.

There are a few underground destinations the Beats Travellers love to party at, such as Kocka in Split. What is your favourite underground rave spot?

The Stereotip Sundays’, the Masters and the Funk in Zagreb.

What is the best party you have played at over the years? And is there a favourite club of yours that people should not miss on their time in Croatia?

There are so many people and clubs, so much groove brought about by each and every one of them. Almost impossible to single out one of them, it depends on the day of the week. And every day brings its own surprise. The best thing for me is to be on the lookout and get surprised. If not, well tomorrow’s another day.

If you have one day off at a festival.

What would you be doing? Heading to the beaches, trekking up mountains or something else? What’s would you recommend we get up to?

Quite honestly, I don’t really care what and where, people of my choice would be my pick. If I had the people I loved around me, I can sit at a treetop or in a five-star hotel. It’s all about who makes your juices running. It’s about the atmosphere and the energy. So, I can climb the mountains or be at beaches, or at home, as long as I’m happy with what turned to be the best party I threw yesterday.

If you had 24 hours to travel to around Croatia what’s your top 3? i.e. must eat, must see, must do, must meet...

All four criteria met with these one: At Draško’s in Zagreb, but you need me for this one as you can’t get in without a referee.

The Kimberley Travel Guide The Kimberley is Western Australia’s remote and sparsely populated wild heart, and one of the best places in the country to experience Australia without the crowds. Covering an area of over 164,000 square miles – that’s nearly 425,000 square km – the Kimberly is twice the size of Victoria with just 40,000 people living in the area, half of which are Aboriginal. The area is chock full of ancient landscapes, pristine white sand beaches, along with some bizarre sights (a horizontal waterfall anyone?). There is so much to see and experience here you might plan for a week, but end up taking a month.

Most visitors enter the Kimberley through the coastal town of Broome, flying direct from Perth year round, with flights from Melbourne and Sydney during high season. Broome is itself a great place to hang out for a few days. Directly facing the Indian Ocean, the town is famous for its pristine beaches, the most famous of which is Cable Beach boasting a whopping 22km of squeaky white sand. Take a camel ride here at sunset and take in the views.

Heading deep into the Kimberley it soon becomes obvious the area’s natural wonders are its biggest draw. The World Heritage Purnululu National Park is home to the fantastically named Bungle Bungles, 360 million year old rock domes which rise up from the flat

land in spectacular fashion. Tiger striped and eerie, a walk among the enormous rocks is one of the top experiences in the Kimberley.

Visit them yourself from Halls Creek (100km away) or join a guided tour.

Another strange yet awe inspiring sight is Horizontal Falls, a waterfall that doesn’t actually fall. A freakish natural phenomenon where tonnes of sea water are squeezed through a tight gap between twin mountain ranges, the huge tides crashing into the coast reach up to 13 metres, and give the “falls” their ferocity and whitewater. Hop on a jet boat through the middle for a thrilling experience.

Who is the typical type of person who can be found on a tour?

I can honestly say that we see people from all different walks of life! From wine lovers to people just wanting to experience the greater Perth. Our tours cater for just about anyone – Although we get through a bit of wine tasting – those that don’t enjoy wine as much still have a great time.

The demographic is very broad also as our tours appeal to any age group.

For someone with no experience with choosing wines do you have any tips on the best wines to take away from the tours? Is there a particular wine that the Swan Valley is famous for?

I always tell my guests to buy what they love and not wait until the next winery. Because what they love may be at the first venue! I’ll give some wine tasting tips to the guests as well. If they are tasting the wines properly then they will be more likely to know whether a particular wine is right for them or not.

The Swan Valley is renowned for Verdelho (a lovely Portuguese white variety) and also the fortified wines are out of this world!! I could keep going however these two would have to be the signatures for the Swan Valley.

Food and wine tours have been growing in popularity over recent years, do you have any advice to help people choose the right tour?

1. Car maintenance Before you set off it’s a good idea to make sure that your car is properly maintained.

Many people have fallen into the trap of driving something that has broken down on them and then having to fork out to repair it – cutting into their travel costs.

Everything You Need To Know About Superannuation Lodged within the Australian Superannuation system is a savings account that you would not have had otherwise. From your very first pay check, the Australian Government have been collecting Super payments and slowly, but surely, you have unknowingly been saving your pennies on the side. The professionals from Backpay.com has told us everything we need to know, which is likely why so many travellers turn to their services to get back all the dollar bills they have been saving.

Everything you need to know Ok. Declaring itself as super is a tad outlandish as superannuation is basically a pension arrangement. Yup. That’s not even barely stirring is it, let alone super.

However, in Australia this is governmentsupported which also means that minimum provisions are enforced for employees, which is kinda nice. From July 1st 2013 employers were required by law to contribute a minimum of 9.25% of an employee’s ordinary time earning into a superannuation fund, which is called a ‘Superannuation Guarantee’. The detail that is really super is that this is an additional payment borne by your employer; it is not deducted from your gross pay. There are also plans to increase the proportion to 12% by 2019, which is nice.

The payment is based on your pre-tax earnings so if you earned $500 before tax for the month you should be entitled to an additional $46.25. However, do not be alarmed if your superannuation balance looks a little skinny as 15% is taxed by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and funds constantly charge administration and insurance fees which can amount to $5-10 per week.

To be eligible the employee must be over 18, working over 30 hours a week and earning over $450 per month from one employer, so it would be beneficial to hold a single job instead of several. As far as assurances go the Australian Government have that covered too as from 1st January 2014 employers were obligated to pay default contributions to an authorised MySuper product, with the most well known

being AustralianSuper and AustSafe Super.

This means that losing your payment due to a suspect provider is now far less a risk.

That all sounds grand and all for Australian citizens yet for short-term visitors such as those on Working Holiday Visas the reality is a little different. Of course, if you meet the criteria then you can expect the contribution. Remember, as long as you earn over $450 a month from one employer you will be entitled. The arrangement is for any worker; whether permanent or casual, resident or non-resident for tax purposes (that would be you by the way).

Arranging your superannuation is relatively straightforward. You can set up your own super account, which is the simpler choice if you intend of taking on temporary work or travelling while in Australia. You could also ask the bank to set up your super when you open an account with them or you can join the super account set up by the employer.

If you do opt for the company’s super account and lose the paperwork do not fret, simply contact the ATO and they can help locate your super. For anyone being paid in cash it may seem great to have your wages in your hands to hold and then spend but you will be missing out on superannuation.

You read that correctly. For all those lovely, crisp banknotes in your pocket you will be losing out on FREE MONEY. Working holiday makers are allowed to withdraw their superannuation either when their visa expires or whenever they leave permanently. This is known as the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment or DASP. A point to note is that you must have left Australia before this can be paid; the application includes checking that any

temporary visa has been cancelled by the Department of Immigration. Indeed, The Australian government must get really irked with these departures as they then take out a further 35% when you apply for the withdrawal. Bit harsh. Another point to note is that you are much better off claiming it sooner rather than later. In fact, if you do not claim your super within six months of leaving Australia, or within six months of the cancellation or expiry of your visa, the ATO will claim the money and it could be a while to organise its release from their tight grasp, especially from abroad.

Still, the money is yours but if you are having trouble working out how to claim it then do not worry. If you have already claimed your taxback then the same company, and even the very same tax professional, should be able to assist you in claiming your superannuation. All you need to do is provide your membership details, fill in some forms and the tax professionals will do the hard work while you wait for the payment to arrive. Most charge a flat fee of around 15% for the service and you should receive your super within 28 days of the Australian Tax Office receiving your application.

Superannuation may not exactly be super but it is free money that you should be entitled to when working in Australia.

Setting up your account is simple and claiming it back once your visa has expired is not that hard either. Just do not forget about it, it is free money after all.
