Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. PSALM 51:10

Keeping A True

A Season of Spiritual Renewal

February 10-March 26

Rev. Walter E. Daniels, Pastor

From the Pastor...

The Season of Lent My brothers and sisters, we have entered the Season of Lent. This is a time in which we prepare for the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. We can use this time to reflect on Jesus’ suffering, sacrifice, life, death, burial, resurrection, and intercession. This Season of Lent represents the time Jesus withdrew into the wilderness for 40 days before He began His ministry here on Earth. So during these six weeks we will imitate Jesus’ sanctification period. Lent is also a time of repentance and mourning. Therefore, with repentant hearts, let’s sanctify ourselves with fasting. We will fast, pray, and study to incorporate spiritual discipline into our daily lives. For those of you who already have daily devotion -- wonderful. For those of us who do not, let this be a time to begin. Daily devotion provides a period of our day in which we can commune or connect with God. What a wonderful opportunity to rededicate ourselves to God for the work of His Kingdom here on Earth. For those of us who are new converts to the Christian faith, Lent provides an excellent season for Christian instruction in the faith. You may already have been baptized with water, but we encourage you to seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This Ash Wednesday is our time to begin our fast and spiritual discipline. I pray at the end of this Lenten Season, we will finish with a closer relationship with Jesus, renewed fellowship with our Christian family, and fresh revelation from the Word of God. Yours in Christ, Rev. Walter Daniels, Pastor

Types of Fasting There are several types of fasting. The one you choose is between you and God. He will honor your best sacrifice. Full Fast Drink only liquids (you establish the number of days). The Daniel Fast Eat no meat, no sweets and no bread. Drink water and juice. Eat fruits and vegetables. 3-Day Fast This fast can be a Full Fast, Daniel Fast or give up at least one item of food. Partial Fast A partial fast is from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm or from sun up to sundown. You can select from three types of fasting —a Full Fast, Daniel Fast or give up at least one item of food. Scripture References for Fasting: Matthew 6:16-18, Matthew 9:14-15, Luke 18:9-14 Relation to Prayer and Reading of the Word: 1 Samuel 1:6-8, 17-18, Nehemiah 1:4, Daniel 9:3, 20, Joel 2:12, Luke 2:37, Acts 10:30,Acts 13:2 Remember that it is the attitude of a heart sincerely seeking Him to which God responds with a blessing (Isaiah 58, Jeremiah 14:12, 1 Corinthians 8:8). May God greatly bless you as you fast! St. Mark A.M.E. Church 2016

Types of Fasting (Cont’d) The Bible describes four major types of fasting: • A Regular Fast - Traditionally, a regular fast means refraining from eating all food. Most people still drink water or juice during a regular fast. When Jesus fasted in the desert, the Bible says, “After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” This verse does not mention Jesus being thirsty. • A Partial Fast - This type of fast generally refers to omitting a specific meal from your diet or refraining from certain types of foods. Daniel 10:2-3 says, “At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.” In Daniel 1:12, they restricted their diet to vegetables and water: “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.” • A Full Fast - These fasts are complete - no food and no drink. Acts 9:9 describes when Paul went on a full fast for three days following his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus: “For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.” Esther also called for this type of fast in Esther 4:15-16: “Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” It is recommended that this type of fast be done with extreme caution and not for extended periods of time. • A Sexual Fast - 1 Corinthians 7:3-6 says: “The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife’s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband’s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” Although not mentioned in the Bible, Christians today commit to fasting from other activities as well. Some give up entertainment such as TV or movies to concentrate on prayer. Others fast from sleep or another activity for a specified period of time. 4 | Keeping A True Lent: A Lenten Devotional

Keeping A True Lent LENT PREPARATION | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8

Jesus Wept

Scripture: Luke 19:28-44

J

esus had entered Jerusalem with His triumph entry on His way to celebrate the Passover. The people gathered in the streets and shouted words of praise and adoration to Him. However, when Jesus saw the city, He wept.

KEY VERSE Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace!” But now they are hidden from our eyes.

Jesus did not weep over the physical condition of the city, the buildings or the state of the homes. He wept for the people. He cried because the people’s hearts were far from Him. At the beginning of the week, they cheered for Jesus because many had witnessed the many miracles He performed. But at the end of the week, the people will shout “Crucify Him.” Jesus sees our hearts. He knows the intent of it. He knows if we love Him or reject Him, even Luke 19:41-42 if our mouths and words say, “Yes, I love you, Jesus!” What is your heart saying about who Jesus is in your life? Will you love him and follow Him, even when the crowd is against Him? Make your choice this Lenten Season on whom you will serve. Merciful and Loving Father, we confess that there have been times we have rejected Your Son. Today, we choose to love Him and follow Him. We ask that You create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit in us so that we can love Him with our whole hearts. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Pastor Walter Daniels St. Mark A.M.E. Church 2016

Keeping A True Lent LENT PREPARATION | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9

Jesus Paid It All Scripture: Colossians 2:11-23

KEY VERSE (Jesus), having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

I

n the classic gospel song “I Am Redeemed”, we find the lyrics, “I am redeemed. Bought with a price. Jesus has changed my whole life. If anybody asks you just who I am, tell them I am redeemed.” Over 2000 years ago, Jesus did just that for the world. He redeemed humankind unto the Father again.

We as humans had fallen from grace and lost our standing with the Father. But because of the work of the cross, we have been forgiven and redeemed by the blood of Jesus. All of our sins were nailed to the cross. Therefore, we no longer have to live in sin. The good news is that Jesus not only paid Colossians the price for our sins, but today sin doesn’t have 2:14 any power over us. After Jesus nailed the sins to the cross, He went to hades and “having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Col. 2:15). He took their power away. Therefore, in Christ Jesus we have the victory over sin and the world. Father, Giver of Life, thank You for Your son Jesus. Because of His sacrifice, we are redeemed to You and can live free from sin. Grant to us enduring strength to overcome our sins and the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen. 6 | Keeping A True Lent: A Lenten Devotional

Prayer Prayer is defined as the human approach to God and addressing God in praise and adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication and intercession. A consciousness of God’s presence, love, direction and grace may be experienced. Why do we pray? We pray to be in communication with God. I pray that you will be encouraged by what you read and meditate on during this Lenten season. God Bless, Reverend Florence A. Bankston

Keeping A True Lent PRAYER | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10

Why Pray? Scripture: Psalm 143

W

hy do we pray? Is it to just get things from God? I pray that this is not the case. God I cry out to could give to us without prayer. He knows our the Lord with wants and our needs, but to bring us to His knee, my voice; He withholds from us so that we will ask. God With my voice to the Lord hears us when we pray. Prayer is the beginning of I make my that communion with God, according to George supplication. MacDonald. He says, “Communion with God is Psalm 142:1 the one need of our souls that is beyond all other needs. Talking with God is the main reason to pray.” God wants us to know him and communication with God is as important to our well-being as breathing is to our physical life. KEY VERSE

We pray to be in communion with God -- to have a relationship with Him. In Psalm 143:1, you find these words: “Oh Lord, hear my prayer. Listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.” Hear our prayer, O Lord; hear our prayer O Lord; Incline Thine ear to us and grant us Thy peace. Amen.

Keeping A True Lent PRAYER | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11

We Pray to Give Thanks to the Lord Scripture: Psalm 118

I

n the Nigerian hymn “Imela”, you find these words: “We thank you, thank you God; we thank You for who You are. You have been good to us; we thank You, O great God.” Beloved thankfulness is feeling or expressing gratitude, or being appreciative. Are you thankful for the many blessings God has given you? Blessings you asked for -- many you didn’t! I thank you Lord because You have blessed me with all my needs. I am healthy and feeling great; I am rich and full of the grace and mercy that only You can give. Thank You Lord for family, friends, my Church and loved ones. I am especially thankful for Jesus. Amen.

St. Mark A.M.E. Church 2016

KEY VERSE You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God and I will exalt you. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever. Psalm 118:28-29

Keeping A True Lent PRAYER | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12

Where Should We Pray? Scripture: Matthew 6: 1-15

KEY VERSE He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord.

W

here should we pray? Matthew 6:6 says:“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Is where we pray important? Jesus says we should go to pray somewhere that is private. Go into your room and shut the door. God will see you, hear 2 Kings 4:33 your prayers and bless you. When Jesus wanted to pray alone he went off by himself. In the Gospel of Matthew 14:23, we find this reference: “After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” In the Gospel of Mark 6:46, we find this reference to where Jesus prayed: “After leaving them, he went on a mountain top to pray. Go somewhere quiet and private. It is easier to speak to God in a quiet still place, a place where you feel safe.” Lord, lead me to that place where I can speak to You and feel Your presence. A special place in my spirit and my heart, so that when I call on You, I know You will answer. Lead me to a place of refuge, shelter, peace, love and joy. Amen.

How Should We Pray? Scripture: Psalm 32

H

ow should we pray? When the disciples KEY VERSE asked Jesus this question, He said to them, Blessed is “This, then is how you should pray: Our Father he whose in heaven. Hallowed be your name, Your kingdom transgression come; Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. is forgiven, whose sin is Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our covered. debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from Psalm 32:1 the evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever, Amen” (Matthew 6: 9-15). This is how we were taught to model our prayers. To honor God; to thank God; to ask for our daily needs; to ask for forgiveness and to forgive others; to keep us from sin and temptation; and to praise God. Then in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 18:9-14, Jesus told the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself, while the Tax Collector asked God to have mercy on him because he was a sinner. Then Jesus said, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Lord, lead me and guide me, so that my prayers keep me humble and honor You. Amen.

For Whom Should We Pray? Scripture: 1 Timothy 2:1-6

KEY VERSE I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone, for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Timothy 2:1-2

W

e should pray for all people in all situations. When we pray for the needs of others, that is called “intercession”. Intercessory prayer is the act of praying for other people. The Lord instructs us to pray not only for our own needs, but to reach out and pray for others. In the Gospel of Matthew the 5th chapter, verse 44, Jesus tells us to “pray for those who persecute you.” We should pray for friend and enemy alike, so that we can be blessed. We also are called to pray for our leaders and those in authority. This is good, and pleases God our Savior. Lord, as I make intercessions for others, please make me a blessing to someone on this God’s day and every day. This is my prayer. Amen.

How Long Should We Pray? Scripture: Ephesians 6:10 –20

H

ow long should we pray? You have heard the expression, “PUSH” (Pray Until Something Happens). 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “Pray without ceasing. Pray continuously.” We should pray until we hear from the Lord! It is my belief that if we ask the Lord for a praying spirit, He will tell us what to say and how long we should continue. We will feel it in our spirits -- that all is well with our souls! Prayers can be of any length, just as long as they come from the heart!

KEY VERSE And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6:18

Lord, give me a discerning spirit so that my prayers do not fall on deaf ears. Help me to keep on praying for the needs of the world’s situations and people. I will pray until I hear a word from You. Amen.

Oh Lord, help! pray and not If we are sincere in our prayers, the Bible says give up. in 1 Peter 3:12: “For the eyes of the Lord are on Luke 18:1 the righteous and His ears are attentive to their prayer.” We must pray and not give up! James 5:16 reminds us that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Keep praying beloved of God. Know that God hears our prayers, and He will bless us. Continue to pray beloved, don’t give up. Get ready for your breakthrough! KEY VERSE

The Importance of Fasting • Fasting was an expected discipline in both the Old and New Testament eras. For example, Moses fasted at least two recorded forty-day periods. Jesus fasted 40 days and reminded His followers to fast, “when you fast,” not if you fast. • Fasting and prayer can restore the loss of the “first love” for your Lord and result in a more intimate relationship with Christ. • Fasting is a biblical way to truly humble yourself in the sight of God (Psalm 35:13; Ezra 8:21). King David said, “I humble myself through fasting.” • Fasting enables the Holy Spirit to reveal your true spiritual condition, resulting in brokenness, repentance, and a transformed life. • The Holy Spirit will quicken the Word of God in your heart and His truth will become more meaningful to you! • Fasting can transform your prayer life into a richer and more personal experience. • Fasting can result in a dynamic personal revival in your own life-and make you a channel of revival to others. “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14

Hungering for God Scripture: Romans 14:1-13

KEY VERSE He who eats does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. Romans 14:6

D

o you hunger for God? Do you desire to know more of Him, to be more like Him, and to give glory to Him? John Piper, author of A Hunger for God says “fasting gives glory to God when it is experienced as a gift from God aimed at knowing and enjoying more of God.” God is glorified when we desire above all else, to become most satisfied in Him. David, who was called a man after God’s own heart, hungered for God. He fasted, prayed and praised God. In Psalm 34:8, He says, “O taste and see that the Lord is good.” When we hunger for God in fasting, He will satisfy us with peace, joy and enlightenment beyond measure.

Dear God, I am hungry for You. Please fill my hunger as I fast today with more of You, more joy, more contentment and understanding of Your love and will for my life. Amen.

Richard Foster says in his book, The Celebration of Discipline, “More I am humbled than any other discipline, fasting reveals the things my soul with fasting. that control us. We cover up what is inside of us with food and other things.” Does pride control Psalms 35:13 you? Does anger, bitterness, jealousy, envy, strife or fear control you? If any of these do, they will surface during fasting. Initially, we will be inclined to rationalize these desires and to think that they are due to our hunger, but then as we prevail in prayer, we realize that these spirits are really within us. The good news is that deliverance from each of these vices can be achieved through the power of Jesus Christ. Dear Lord Jesus, You know all things, even the secret things in my heart. Thank You for this test that is humbling my soul. My heart’s desire is to be more like You every day. Amen.

The people came together to seek help from the Lord. But God showed Jehoshaphat that some battles do not belong to man, but to the Lord (II Chronicles 20:115). Jesus wants us to fast and pray. Solitude When we practice the spiritual discipline of solitude, we learn to separate ourselves from the distractions of the world. We isolate ourselves in order to commune with God. We are free to listen to God, often without music, phones, television, or interactions with others. Solitude offers us the benefit of freedom so the constraints of others have no effect on us. We are able to focus on our actions and thoughts as we spend time in self-reflection and introspection. Hence, our self-concept can change for the better as we learn self-identity in Jesus Christ. A few other benefits of solitude are creativity, rest, spiritual growth, and inner peace. Positive solitude allows us to be alone, but not lonely. In the busy world, we learn to be alone with God and learn of Him as He speaks to us through His word, nature, and the Holy Spirit. The discipline of solitude enables us to learn how to trust ourselves through God’s guidance as we grow to be more like Him. Rev. Queen Yancy

Keeping A True Lent SOLITUDE | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22

Walk in the Light Scripture: Matthew 5:13-20

KEY VERSE Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (NIV)

P

eople can see you better when you are living in “The Light.” Let your light shine that others will see our Savior Jesus Christ reflected in all that you do. The light that shines within will resonate as you spend time in solitude with God. In his book, Life Together, Dietrich Bonhoeffer purports a delicate balance between solitude and fellowship: “One who wants fellowship without solitude plunges into the void of words and feelings, and one who seeks solitude without fellowship perishes in the abyss of vanity, selfinfatuation, and despair.”

We should slow down in order to take stock of what we need to do and how we need to do it. Always make some time to be alone with Almighty God before making any sudden decisions or rash moves. Your tempered response will be a light to someone struggling along the way. God, I want to spend quiet time basking in Your Presence, transformed by Your spiritual light so that I may unselfishly encourage others. Amen.

Honor the Lord Scripture: Mark 6: 30-32

F

rom time to time, the Savior spent quiet time to commune with the Heavenly Father. Jesus invited the disciples to be alone with Him in a quiet place of repose, away from the press of the people and duties of the day.

KEY VERSE Come away with me to a quiet place and get some rest.

When life’s toils and snares seem to wear you Mark 6:31 down, you need to steal away with Jesus. You (NIV) need to get away from inquiring minds and busybodies to clear your thought process. You need a peaceful place to relieve the stress and bring resolution to a distressing situation. Seek the Lord in silence and solitude while you have time; seek His will for what you need to do. Make time to commune with God to instill patience and humility for carrying out the work along the journey. Honor the Lord with meditation; Honor Him with thought; Honor Him with reflection; Honor Him with consideration; Honor the Lord with His approval and confirmation. God, I will honor You in a quiet place before laying down to sleep and upon rising. I will praise God with my mind and body refreshed for another day of peace. Amen.

You who are drained by 11: 28 the day’s labor; exhausted from going in circles; (NIV) discouraged from doing things your own way. A closer walk with Jesus is time well spent. Jesus is calling weary souls to come to Him for relief, rest, and revitalization. Jesus does not promise a rest from work, rather the strength and fortitude to bear the load. No load is too heavy with God as our anchor or mainstay. God has promised to be always with us and His word is true. When we isolate ourselves from the rigors of the day and get attuned to God’s will, God will grant us the strength, give us resilience, and supply the resources to do the work before us. God of creation, I stretch my hands to Thee. Remain a resting place for me so I may continue this journey according to Your divine plan. Bless me to be anxious for nothing. Grant me sweet peace and time alone with Thee, in Jesus’ name. Amen. 24 | Keeping A True Lent: A Lenten Devotional

Keeping A True Lent SOLITUDE | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25

Wait on the Lord Scripture: Psalm 91

L

ook at the time. With whom have you been? What have you done with your time? When have you spent time with God? Thomas Merton has said, “Solitude and silence teach me to love my brothers for what they are, not for what they say.

KEY VERSE He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Your back is against the wall. All roads seem to lead toward a dead-end street. Everyone is depending on you. The hungry din roars, confounding your Psalm 91:1 thoughts. Be still! Be silent before the Most High (NIV) God. Then the words from your mouth and the meditation from your heart will be pleasing toward God and to your fellow man. Indeed, time in isolation talking to God will stir up the gift, will ensure that your seeds of faith will fall on fertile ground. Designate some time to spend with God. Intimacy with God is nourishment for the soul. Time alone with Him transforms you into His image. Your earthly potential is magnified when heart, mind, body, and spirit are in one accord with the will of our Heavenly Father. Time spent with God grants you an abundance of His grace and mercy. God, thank you for an opportunity to spend time with Thee. Oh Lord, I have often made bad decisions, but now I take myself out of the way and say yes to Your will and Your way. Amen. St. Mark A.M.E. Be Encouraged Scripture: John 14: 1-21

KEY VERSE I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

A

part from God, there is an emptiness within us that reflects our need for fulfillment to be complete and made whole. There may be times when we feel neglected, forgotten, and lonely. Never fear. God will never leave us or forsake us. In those lonely hours, make time to seek God’s will and way. God is just a prayer away.

Jesus often separated Himself to a secluded place where He and the Father communed. Until we seek His Spirit for truth, we will not be who God intends us to be. When you seek God, be ready for the truth. Can you handle the truth? Make a decision today to change your empty moments of solitude filled with The Bread of Life, by seeking the Way, the Truth, and the Light of Jesus. Everything you touch will begin to improve. When Christ sacrificed His life for you and me, He did not make any excuses. But the good news is He rose. He lives! What are you sacrificing in your life for Christ? John 14: 6 (NIV)

You cannot come to the Father except through Jesus. No excuses! God, teach me to remove self-denials, pity-parties, and all options in life that are not pleasing in Your sight. God, I thank You for Jesus Christ and everything He did on Calvary to save my life. Amen. 26 | Keeping A True Lent: A Lenten Devotional

Meditation and Study In the book, Celebration of Discipline, by Richard J. Foster, he defines meditation as “the ability to hear God’s voice and obey His word.” During our meditation period, we allow God to mold our hearts into an inner sanctuary. This is a necessary spiritual discipline in that we are transformed because of what we store in our mind and spirit. What we store in our mind and spirit then manifests in our behavior. Meditation, then, is an opportunity for us to fellowship with God, and to have our minds transformed and renewed to resemble His thoughts, words, and actions. Study goes hand and hand with meditation. We are to study the word of God in order to transform our minds. The word of God is what we store in our mind and spirit during meditation. As we study, we can follow through with what is described in Philippians 4:8-9: “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” Meditation and Study are those spiritual disciplines that help us to be transformed into new creatures in Christ Jesus. Meditating on God’s Word Day and Night Scripture: Joshua 1:5-9

KEY VERSE This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8

T

his book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth - the law which had already been written by Moses, and from which he and the people were to take all those precepts by which their lives were to be governed. Though there was a copy of the law laid up in the sanctuary, this was not sufficient. Joshua must have a copy for himself, and he was to consult it incessantly, that his way might be made prosperous, and that he might have good success. If he kept God’s word, God would keep him in body and soul; if he should observe to do according to that word, then God would cause all his way to be prosperous. Those who are obedient to God lack no manner of thing that is good. God, teach me to remove selfdenials, pity-parties, and all options in life that are not pleasing in Your sight. God, I thank You for Jesus Christ and everything He did on Calvary to save my life. Amen.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the word that you have written for me to live by. Help me to grow in Your word through daily mediation. Allow me to take one day at a time mediating on Your goodness, Your love, Your peace and Your joy. Amen.

Visualizing God Scripture: Psalm 1:1-3

N

o matter how we pray, the purpose of prayer is to put ourselves in the presence of God. One way of doing this, is to use images. Images are excellent ways to help one assimilate lessons into their personal prayer lives. I am admittedly a visual person, so pictures, icons, and art help put me in the presence of God. For visual learners (and visual prayers), you may use paintings and icons of Jesus to inspire prayer. As we read God’s word, visualize the story, the messenger giving the message. Ask yourself, “What is it I am to take from this?”

KEY VERSE But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:2

You may have to steal away to a quiet location. I oftentimes sit out on the balcony and look into the sky as I read and meditate to hear and see God! The key is to relax and eliminate all distractions to focus on the meditation. Dear Heavenly Father, Your word was the beginning and Your word is the only thing that will last. Plant Your word deep in my heart as I study and grow closer in You. Amen.

Thoughts, Words and Deeds Scripture: Psalm 19

KEY VERSE Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

A

LL the words that we speak (on our jobs, about others, even in challenging situations) and the meditation of my heart – (The thoughts of my heart) BE ACCEPTABLE IN THY SIGHT! It is important that we understand as children of our Lord and Savior that we are to meditate on Him daily, throughout the day asking God to take control over our thoughts and words. We should pray to Him to exert such an influence on our minds that our words and thoughts may be right and pure. We must understand that the sincere desires and wishes of true piety that the thoughts and words may be acceptable or pleasing to God.

Although many may say it is hard, we are commanded to read God’s word and meditate on it daily. This is not about pleasing ourselves, or pleasing our fellow-men, but it is about pleasing God. The great objective is to secure acceptance with Him; to have such thoughts, and to utter such words, that He can look upon us with approbation. Dear Heavenly Father, I ask for forgiveness for any thoughts, words, or deeds that are not pleasing to Your kingdom. I ask You now to come into my heart, clean me up so that every word that comes from my mouth and all that I meditate on in my heart is acceptable in Your kingdom. Just as a son often rebels against the guidance of his father—not trusting his judgment or not accepting his discipline—so do we often fight against the hand of God: The hand of God is a symbol of God’s guidance, instruction, and discipline. The more we recognize the hand of God, the better we will be able to follow His lead. Through the study of God’s Word, a strong prayer life, and an abiding trust in God, we can learn to recognize, trust, and enjoy the hand of God moving in our lives. Power of Godly Thoughts Scripture: Philippians 4:4-9

KEY VERSE Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. Philippians 4:8

A

famous scene in Peter Pan illustrates the power of thoughts. Peter is in the children’s bedroom. They have seen him fly and want to fly too. They have tried it from the floor, then the beds! The result is failure. Finally, John asked, “How do you do it?” Peter answered, “You just think lovely, wonderful thoughts and they lift you up in the air.” In a sense, the same is true for the believer. You can change your life by changing the way you think. As I sat in the pit of depression, I began to see that my destructive thought patterns had become a vicious cycle of self-condemnation and insecurity. The cycle had to be broken. I began to pray for direction, asking God to take control, knowing that only He could accomplish what I was asking. The “handle” for your thought life is a willingness to recognize the power of your thoughts, a commitment to God’s standard concerning the mind and a choice to practice right thinking. Surrender to the power of God and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask You to help me recognize my thoughts. When they are not true, honorable, pure, or loving, gently guide me to Your word so that Your thoughts become my thoughts. Amen. 32 | Keeping A True Lent: A Lenten Devotional

Simplicity Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God. William Carey Simplicity is the state or quality of being free from complications. This is in regard to our actions, thoughts and motives. Lent is a good time to reflect upon these things. The Lord has given us a simple plan for our life. The “Good News” of our Lord is simple to understand by even a young child. For example, Micah 6:8 says: “What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God?” Lastly, John 14:13 simply tells us that we can go to God for all things, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” Simplicity in Christ means acceptance, clarity, clutter free, gratitude, joy and living in the present. Are You Content With God’s Love? Scripture: Psalm 63

KEY VERSE My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise Thee with joyful lips.

A

re you content with the things in your life? The Psalmist says in Psalm 63: Because of the love of our God, I will bless thee while I live. Praising God must be the work of our whole lives and it is simple to praise God for His love that is shown to us every day.

In all our prayers and praise, we are taught to begin with, “Hallowed be Thy name,” and conclude with, “Thine is the glory”. We give honor and praise to God; Psalm 63:5 it may be taken not as a petition, but as adoration. We must begin our prayers with praising God, and it is very fit that He should be first. Then our end to the prayer should include giving God the glory. Thoughts of God must not be transient thoughts passing through the mind, but abiding thoughts dwelling in the mind. When our minds are stayed on praising God, we experience indescribable life opportunities simply by giving to God His due praise. Lord, thank You for Your love. Help us to simply love and praise You for all of Your goodness today and every day. Amen.

God Will Provide! Scripture: Luke 9: 12-17

esus took two loaves of bread and two fish and fed a multitude. We know that we need food to sustain our physical self. In the scripture today, Jesus shows us how in a time when we may feel helpless, He makes a way. Human needs were provided for.

KEY VERSE And they did eat, and were all filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

Jesus cares more for the food that feeds our spirit. When Jesus was approached by the tempter after fasting for forty days as recorded in Matthew 4:3; When Satan tempted Him, Jesus states, “It is written, Luke 9: 17 ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’ Our souls need to be fed and nourished by the spirit of God. Jesus’ prayer, “Give us Lord our daily bread!” speaks of this need as well as a physical need. We have to have spiritual sustenance to sustain our daily walk with the Lord through obedience. When we as Christians read the word of God and apply it to our lives, we are nourishing our spirit person. True understanding comes by applying the word of God to our lives. Lord, thank You for feeding us daily. Thank You for Your coming to us in a time of need. Continue to feed us during this Lent season. Amen.

C

hrist gives us the assurance that He will take care of us. God has made us a promise and His Word is true. We can move forward because He is ahead of us in all things.

In the poem, “Footprints in the Sand” is a wonderful description of how God simply will take care of us in all circumstances. Mary Stevenson states in the poem, “Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there was only one set of footprints.” And the Lord replied: “My precious child, I love you and Hebrews 13:5 would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.” No matter the issue, God is there to bring us through. This is simply faith. Matthew 17:20 reads: “If you have the faith of a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence place; and it shall be moved; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Lord, thank You for Your promise to be with us. God Pours Out His Wisdom Scripture: James 1:1-8

KEY VERSE If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

J

ames says that God gives to all men generously when asked. Just picture God stretching or spreading out His table of wisdom. The way God dispenses His wisdom to those who ask is by lavishly pouring out to them the supply of that which they need. We ask God for wisdom so that we can be wise in our decisions.

Sailors rely on buoys to mark trouble spots in the sea. God’s promises of wisdom are ours for the asking to help us to avoid dangerous spots that could be in our James 1:5 lives. His commandments as well as His promises are like buoys for us, revealing the trouble spots and rocky points of life. When we follow the wisdom found in God’s Word and thereby steer clear of what is harmful to us, life is not only more enjoyable, but more productive. God gives His wisdom simply, plainly, straightforwardly, to all of those who ask Him. God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong (1 Corinthians 1:27). Lord, thank You for leading us and guiding us through the trials of life. We pray for Your wise counsel in all things. Amen.

Worship Worship is giving God the best that He has given you. Be careful what you do with the best you have. Whenever you get a blessing from God, give it back to Him as a love-gift. Take time to meditate before God and offer the blessing back to Him in a deliberate act of worship. If you hoard it for yourself, it will turn into spiritual dry rot, as the manna did when it was hoarded (see Exodus 16:20). God will never allow you to keep a spiritual blessing completely for yourself. It must be given back to Him so that He can make it a blessing to others. Rev. William Moore

ethel is the symbol of fellowship with God; Ai is the symbol of the world. Abram “pitched And he moved his tent” between the two. The lasting value of our from there to public service for God is measured by the depth of the mountain east of Bethel, the intimacy of our private times of fellowship and and he pitched oneness with Him. Worship Is Holy! Scripture: Psalm 99: 3, 5, 9

A

fter the letters to the seven churches in Asia were written, John begins to record what he saw in his heavenly vision. In chapter four he gives a description of the throne room and tells of the four living creatures who do not rest day and night saying, Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is and is to come.

KEY VERSE Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at His holy hill; For the Lord our God is Holy. Psalm 99:9

What revelation did these creatures have that prompted their “non-stop” worship? To begin to answer that question we don’t have to look much further than their first three words, “Holy, Holy, Holy.” By repeating holy three times these creatures were beholding someone who was completely Holy. The Greek word used for Holy in Revelation 4:8 is hagios. Hagios means sacred, physically pure and morally blameless. God may be more Holy than He is anything else. There is no evil, corruption or sin neither in Him nor around Him. Wherever His presence resides is Holy. Let them praise Your great and awesome name--He is Holy. (Psalm 99:3) Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool--He is Holy (Psalm 99:5). Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his Holy hill; for the Lord our God is Holy. (Psalm 99:9)

Created to Worship! Scripture: Ephesians 2: 2 -8

KEY VERSE …and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

I

n Ephesians 2:6, Paul writes that God has made us to sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Notice this is not just a future hope but a present reality. You may wonder at times how anything on this earth could be heavenly. Regardless of how things look around us, in Christ, God has granted us a heavenly position. Remember, Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2).

Ephesians 2:6 NKJV

There are many instances in scripture where ordinary people saw into the heavenly dimension. One such instance occurred when the shepherds saw and heard angelic beings proclaiming the birth of Christ. Stephen, the martyr, saw the Son of Man at the right hand of God and Isaiah saw the Lord in His Holy temple. God is not way off “up” yonder somewhere. He is among us in a dimension we cannot see with the physical eye. Let us worship Him in spirit and truth. God, we thank You for allowing us to Worship You in spirit and in truth; we thank You for allowing us to be able to glimpse into the dimension of Your glory, which continues to give hope in the midst of any situation which sometimes would otherwise seem to be hopeless! ometimes, we have a tendency to get too chummy with God, or try to bring Him down to our level. A Friend He is - but an Almighty Friend, a Holy Friend. As we come to understand His ineffable nature, we shall be saved from irreverent attitudes in prayer. And yet He encourages us to come “boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16). It is because Jesus our advocate is at the right hand of God that we dare to come boldly before His throne. When God’s angels acknowledged God’s Person and attributed worth to Him, “the house was filled with smoke.” So when you and I attribute worth to God in worship, heaven is moved and God will show Himself.

KEY VERSE Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!” And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. Isaiah 6:3-4

Lord, You are my Maker, my Friend, my Savior, my King, my Master and the Lover of my soul. You are completely holy and loving. Help me to keep this balance in my worship. Meet me now and inhabit my praises. Thank You for the gift of being in Your presence. Be Glorified! Amen.

o you know how to live with little or much? Paul said, “I know how to be abased and how A time to gain, to abound” (Phil. 4:12). Job knew, too. “…Shall and a time to we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Job lose. 2:10 NIV). When Job’s world crashed around him, Ecclesiastes he tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to 3:6 the ground and worshiped. He said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:20-21). KEY VERSE

“In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing” (Job 1:22 NIV). When trouble comes our way, many of us collapse in fear and anxiety like Job, but few of us worship. When trouble strikes, most of us don’t take time to acknowledge God’s worth! Job’s wife told Job to curse God for causing him to suffer (see Job 2:9). We may lose our health or our loved ones, but we must find a place to worship God for His goodness, His grace and mercy, and His new spiritual insight. Lord, I thank You for every obstacle and for every mountain. Father I worship You and give praises, and trust You even in the midst of my circumstances. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

ing David of Israel knew something about pursuit. Many times during his crusades for King Saul and later as king himself, he was the pursuer. He pursued and subdued his enemies. There were also instances in David’s life when he was the one being pursued by his enemies. In fact, when he wrote the words to Psalm 63, he was hiding from King Saul in the wilderness of Judah but yet pursuing God!

KEY VERSE My soul followeth hard after thee; Thy right hand upholdeth me. Psalm 63:8 KJV

David was even more anxious to pursue God! In essence, he was saying in Psalm 63:8: “God, I am going to pursue you until I catch you.” King David’s prime motivation for pursuing God was that his soul was thirsty for God. He had a longing to see the power and glory of God. He realized that the loving kindness and favor of God was more precious than life. When we catch God, we will have all we need. Spirit of Worship! Scripture: Philippians 3:3

KEY VERSE For we [Christians] are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit and by the Spirit of God, and exult and glory and pride ourselves in Jesus Christ, and put no confidence or dependence on what we are in the flesh and on outward privileges and physical advantages and external appearances.

J

esus told the woman at the well in John 4:23, But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit... The word which Jesus used for spirit is the Greek word pneuma. Pneuma is defined as a current of air, breath or a breeze. So the place of worship is the spirit of man, but the means of worship is the Holy Spirit. True worshipers worship the Father in spirit and by the Spirit. To worship in spirit also means to allow the Holy Spirit to conform us. True worshipers don’t take notice of themselves for their eyes are on the Father. Their ears are tuned to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the worship leader and knows the heart of the Father. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Submission Submission is a spiritual discipline that takes place in the heart and manifests itself outward. It gives us the ability to free ourselves of the terrible burden of always having to have things our way. Because of the freedom submission allows us to have, we can release ourselves from the entanglement of our stubborn self-will. Submission allows us to esteem others greater than ourselves because we realize that we are purposed to live in service to others for kingdom work. Therefore, self-denial is a daily undertaking. The connation of self-denial, according to the world standard, brings images of being a push-over, a doormat, or a wimp. But submission is quite the opposite. To give up the right to have it our way, frees us from the bondage of self-interest. When our focus is for the greater good, the body of Christ, then we are living a life that Jesus states in Luke 9:23, “…Whoever, wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.” We must be free to follow Jesus and function according to His will for our lives. As we humble ourselves before Christ Jesus, and totally submit to Him, then we have the power to overcome. We can overcome the world and all its temptations. Let’s be encouraged to “lose our lives” for Jesus’ sake, then we will find live, fulfillment. Rev. Shirley Daniels

Lord, I Surrender! Scripture: James 4:1-10

KEY VERSE Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners; and purify your hearts, your double minded.

T

here is a familiar hymn that we sing in our church, “I Surrender All.” The lyrics are, “All to Jesus I surrender. All to Him I freely give. I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live.” Powerful words. How can I live in God’s presence if I have not given Him my life?

According to author Richard J. Foster, the first act of submission is to surrender to Almighty God. In order to do that we must understand surrender. To surrender is to release mind, body, and spirit to God’s greater authority. We are to relinquish control of all of our spiritual gifts, talents, finances, problems, and Life. We must understand that we give up our rights, will, and desires to God so that James 4:7-8 He may use us according to His plans and how He sees fit. When we do this, Satan has no power over us. Therefore, it is easy to resist his temptations. Throughout this coming year, let’s choose daily to surrender to God! Loving and Merciful Father, thank You for Your unconditional love towards us. In the name of Jesus, I totally surrender my life and being to You to use for Your glory. Amen.

Living Out the Scripture Scripture: 1 Peter 2:1-10

T

he scriptures are inspired by the Holy Spirit, therefore, they are often referred to as the Holy Writ. Since they are holy writings, it behooves me to follow them. But how can I follow what I do not know or understand? In this Christian walk, we are to submit to the scripture in order to live our lives as holy Christian examples for the world to see. This task may not be easy, but it is doable. In order to live in harmony with humankind, we must be willing to obey God which is to obey His word. Therefore, we must live a life free of malice, deceit, hypocrisy, and evil speaking.

KEY VERSE Therefore, laying aside all malice, al deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby. 1 Peter 2:1-2

Submission to the Word of God positions us to lay aside all those things that hinder our relationship with Jesus and with our fellow brothers and sisters. Not living in submission to the Word of God ushers in disobedience to the Word. It also removes us from our proper place in God as a chosen generation, royal priesthood, and holy nation. Find the courage to live the Word today! Holy Father, in the name of Jesus, I choose to live according to Your word. Help me to be strong in my choice to love You and honor You in total submission to Your word. Amen. St. Mark A.M.E. Church 2016

Keeping A True Lent SUBMISSION | THURSDAY, MARCH 17

For the Love of Family Scripture: Ephesians 5: 22-6:9

KEY VERSE With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.

F

amily is one of the greatest inheritances God ever bestowed on humankind. It’s the family that God has empowered to be our unit to which we belong. The family has been sanctioned to help build our self-concept, self-worth, and spiritual values. It is through the family unit that God put into practice divine order.

Fathers have been given the responsibility of head of household. He is the one to set the spiritual foundation for the family. They are also commanded to show Christ’s perfect example of love through his display of love to the wife and Ephesians mother. The mother and children learn submission 6:7-8 from the father by how he loves, cares, protects and provides for the family. As the father submits to Jesus, and gives up his will for the love and good of the family, he teaches the family to submit to him and to care for others. Submission to Christ is the father’s strength and inheritance for the family. Every Head of House (male or female) has the responsibility to love and submit to Christ first. Then the home is in order. Our Heavenly Father, it is to You that we lift our hearts of love in total submission. Help us to be faithful in our love to You and our family, in the name of Jesus. Amen. 50 | Keeping A True Lent: A Lenten Devotional

Not Me First, But Others! Scripture: Philippians 2: 1-15

P

aul writes this letter to the people of Philippi in order to encourage them to be humble and unselfish. Learning how to willingly put others first is taking the posture of the cross. Jesus loved, suffered, and died putting others first. We are admonished to display the same example daily with a glad heart. When we put others’ needs above our own, we live a life of submission. No task is too small or too great for us to perform for the benefit of others. When we have the opportunity to share our tools, drive someone to the doctor or wash a neighbor’s dishes, we are contributing to the work of God’s kingdom here on earth in total submission to Christ Jesus. God responds to our acts of love by taking care of our needs. A life of submission is the life Jesus lived while on Earth as a shining example to all. Won’t you live a life of submission by putting your neighbors first?

KEY VERSE Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:14-15

Our Father, You are Jehovah-Jireh, our provider. Help us to meet the needs of our neighbors as a good neighbor should. Bless us in our needs as we surrender to You. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen. St. Mark A.M.E. Church 2016

Keeping A True Lent SUBMISSION | SATURDAY, MARCH 19

Sober Minded! Scripture: Romans 12

KEY VERSE For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

A

s captain of my high school cheerleading squad, there were often times I had to make decisions that were best for the entire squad. At one pep rally, one of our teammates wanted to be the one being lifted in the stunt instead of being the one lifting another. Therefore, I saw it as my responsibility as the captain to take her place. It was the perfect opportunity for me to demonstrate that we all were valuable members.

Living in total submission to Christ Jesus is to dedicate all of our gifts, belongings, and finances to Him. We realize that Jesus has given us every gift, spiritual and tangible to use in us for His glory. In order for the gifts to be effectively used in us, we should remain humble before God and man. As a Romans 12:3 sober Christian, the spotlight should always be on Jesus and not on us. As we glorify Jesus first, then He will use our gifts to edify the body of Christ. Our spiritual and financial gifts are given to us to bless others. As we use them for that purpose, then Jesus will bless us, oftentimes through others. Hence goes the circle of life. We are all interdependent on each other in this walk. Holy Father, thank You for the gifts You give. Empower us now to serve others with those gifts. In Jesus’ name. Amen. 52 | Keeping A True Lent: A Lenten Devotional

Keeping A True Lent SUBMISSION | SUNDAY, MARCH 20

Attitude of Servanthood Scripture: Mark 9: 33-50

S

alt is a mineral that is processed in the Earth as a rock. Then, the process of mining extracts it from the Earth. The pressure of mining produces a mineral that is essential to every living creature. So goes servants. True servants must go through the process of submission to God and others and are tempered with self-denial and compassion. Why must they enter and forge through this process? They have something that is essential to humankind. They have gifts and talents that are to be offered up as service to help save men, women, boys and girls from spiritual death.

KEY VERSE Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another. Mark 9:50

As we travel through this Lenten Season, let us examine ourselves. Do a spiritual checkup and determine are you fulfilling your spiritual purpose. Are we using our spiritual gifts to edify the body of Jesus Christ? Are we letting our light shine for the world to see our good works and glorify God? Our Father and Creator, thank You for making us the salt of the Earth. We humble ourselves to You now in total submission. We choose to use our gifts to bless others and serve them for the building of Your kingdom here on Earth, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Keeping A True Lent SUBMISSION | MONDAY, MARCH 21

The Power of Submission Scripture: Luke 3: 15-22

KEY VERSE When all the people were baptized it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened.

I

n this Luke text, Jesus and John demonstrate the power of submission. John took the focus of the people’s expectation off of himself. He let them know that he was not the Savior, but it is the one that comes after him that will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John submits to Jesus.

After the baptism of the people and of Jesus, He submits to the Father in prayer. Jesus prays so hard that the heavens open up and the Holy Spirit descends on Him. Jesus knows He cannot do anyLuke 3:21 thing without the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is God. Yet He prays to God Almighty. Because of His submission, God is well pleased. When we learn to submit to God, the favor of God manifests in our lives because submission pleases Him. When we yield to the power of the Holy Spirit, we have a greater impact on the world. Why? We understand that it is not our power, but the power of God operating through the gifts of the Holy Spirit that does the work. Submission to Jesus gives us power to do ministry. Holy Father, You are the Mighty God. We submit ourselves to You. Let Your gifts manifest in us to impact the world for Your kingdom, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Service

Service is defined as the work done by one person or group that benefits another. It is an act of help or assistance or an act of public worship. As Christian followers of Jesus, we are expected to serve others. When we offer service, it meets needs and also expresses thanks to God. It may encourage others to praise God because of the good works displayed. In I Corinthians 12:4-9, it speaks to the many gifts and services that God blesses us with to edify the body of Christ. Basically, service builds up the body of Christ. For it is when we learn to put the me, myself, and I aside that we learn to be the tool God intended us to be. One example is the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:2537). The Samaritan did not forgo the opportunity to meet the need of someone who was in desperate need of care. He did not stop to discuss whether the injured man was of the same faith, race, or creed. He simply rendered aid to a suffering man. In order to serve others, we must first love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus provided service to all without judgment. He met physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of all He encountered. We are to follow His example. Rev. Melvin Coltrane

Keeping A True Lent SERVICE | TUESDAY MARCH 22

A Great Servant Scripture: John 13: 1-20

KEY VERSE Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.

T

here is no secret about Jesus’ love and commitment to humankind. He was masterful at displaying His leadership through His service to all, servanthood. From healing the sick, raising the dead, to death on the cross for the sins of the world, Jesus exemplifies servanthood. In fact, six of the ten commandments deal with our relationship with others here on Earth. If we are to live a life that aligns with the Word of God, then we must live as servants to each other. Jesus laid aside His riches to become a servant for us. In taking up the towel, He confirmed the Father’s purpose as “The Good Shephard.”

A servant must possess a character of love and compassion. He/she must be willing to deny him/ herself. There is no greater love, compassion, or life than one of a servant. For through service to others, a servant is fulfilled. John 13: 3-4

Loving and Merciful Father, thank You for Your Son Jesus who laid down His life for us. Help us to live a life of service to all whose paths we cross. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Keeping A True Lent SERVICE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23

Service or Ambition Scripture: Matthew 20: 20-28

A

s Jesus prepared to go to the cross, as one of the final instructions Jesus states to His disciples, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father” (John 14:12). Greater works of service is the command from Jesus. It is the service to others that pleases God. Service to others allows us to embrace the characteristic of humbleness. Humbleness and a servant attitude make us more like Jesus. The measure of greatness is not position, power, or prestige; it is service.

KEY VERSE Yet it shall not be among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. Matthew 20:26

Holy Father, in the name of Jesus, help us daily to deny ourselves and take up our cross to follow You through our service to others. “You can start right where you stand and apply the habit of going the extra mile by rendering more service and better service than you are now being paid for.” Napoleon Hill

Keeping A True Lent SERVICE | THURSDAY, MARCH 24

Bear and Share Burdens Scripture: Galatians 6

KEY VERSE Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

W

e are responsible in offering service to those who are lost and seeking God. We are no better than anyone else because we all have sinned and come short of God’s glory. However, God has blessed us with His grace and mercy so that we can service others. In fact, God allows us to use our life experiences to help someone who may be going through the same trials. He didn’t deliver us to just sit back and act as if we are perfect, because we’re not.

There is work to be done so that we spread the gospel and be supportive of each other. We can’t compare ourselves to anyone else because we all have different gifts and a different measure of faith. At that moment in time, it’s not about you or me. It’s about God and His glory through service. Once we have reached a level of maturity, we understand that service to others is what shows our love towards others. As we travel through this Lent Season, let us be perfected in the love of God through our service of bearing and sharing the burdens of our neighbors. Heavenly Father, help us to remember that Jesus was a humble servant. Help us to show forth Your love through our service to Your people. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Keeping A True Lent SERVICE | FRIDAY, MARCH 25

God Pleasers

Scripture: Ephesians 6: 5-9

W

e all work to get the basic necessities of life. We obtain the things we need and sometimes the things we want. Even though we work hard, there are times we forget about God and our fellow man. Work becomes more important. But, at the end of the day, yes, work is important and we must respect our bosses, but we must obey the REAL BOSS -- Jesus Christ.

KEY VERSE With goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men. Ephesians 6:7

Apostle Peter encourages us to have goodwill towards all people. Not with lip service or eye service, but loving actions that will benefit others. However, we have to do things in a way that pleases God. Understand that no matter what we face in our lives, we are to ensure our goodwill is rendered as if we are offering our service to God. As we serve, let us do so with love and humbleness of heart. Dear Father, let us not be just eye service Christians. But create in us a heart to serve others with goodwill towards all men, In Jesus’ name. Amen. “Think of your fellow man, lend him a helping hand. Put a little love in your heart. You see it’s getting late. Oh, please don’t hesitate. Put a little love in your heart. And this world will be a better place for you and me. You just wait and see!” Jackie DeShannon, 1969 St. Mark A.M.E. Church 2016

Keeping A True Lent SERVICE | SATURDAY, MARCH 26

Perfected Love Scripture: 1 Peter 4: 7-11

KEY VERSE And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8

I

n these days and times, we must learn to love each other. We need to open ourselves to others through prayer for others and service to others. As we participate in activities that meet the needs of others, we are displaying the love God has for us. Using our gifts to aid others is a command from God. We are not to be rude or mistreat one another. When we offer our service, the Jesus in us loves the Jesus in them and there begins a connection. The ministry of help begins to the glory of God.

Fervent love for others allows us to serve them -- for without love we can do nothing. Sharing, caring, giving, helping, and loving are service attributes that each saint should not be without. Being hospitable to others with a service attitude is what each of us should display inside the House of God and outside the walls of the church. A good example of this is when we serve breakfast to the members and to those who come in from the cold to receive a hot meal. Serving them with a smile and conversation connects with them in mind, body and spirit. In 2016, let us commit to love and be loving in our service to others. Thank You Father God, for the love You give us. Now let us serve others with love to the uplifting of Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen. 60 | Keeping A True Lent: A Lenten Devotional

Keeping A True Lent RESURRECTION SUNDAY | MARCH 27

The Appearance of Jesus Scripture: Matthew 28

KEY VERSE When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. Matthew 28:17

R

esurrection Sunday is a day of celebration across the Christian community. It represents the covenant relationship of Jesus returning for His saints. As Jesus appears to His disciples, their first response is to bow in reverence and in worship. They understood that Jesus’ appearance was the fulfillment of the promise. Oh how awesome the feeling of a fulfilled promise!

When Jesus appears in our lives to fulfill a promise, what is our response? Do we hastily seek to enjoy the benefits of the promise? Or, do we seek to worship Him with prayer and thanksgiving? Knowing that all good things come from God, “and no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11), when Jesus appears in our lives He brings healing, deliverance, peace, joy, forgiveness, strength, life, and love. As we see Jesus in our daily activities, it is an opportunity for us to be grateful for His faithfulness. Let us spread the word that “Jesus Lives and is still making appearances in the lives of humankind.” Oh Precious Savior, Thank You Jesus for Your appearance in our lives. We thank You for Your unconditional love that is faithful every day. We give You honor and praise for Your presence that keeps us daily. Hallelujah! Amen.
