ith one more year to go before “the big event,” (ABMA’s 100th Anniversary) there was plenty of excitement and activities for participants at this year’s 99th American Brush Manufacturers Association (ABMA) Annual Convention, which took place March 2-5 at the Hyatt Coconut Point, in Bonita Springs, FL. ABMA President Mark Fultz, of Abtex Corporation, Dresden, NY, reported that 222 people attended the 2016 annual convention. This was the strongest attendance over the past 12 years for the convention when it has coincided with an InterBrush year (the Freiburg, Germany trade fair held every four years). Attendees heard three guest speakers, various industry reports and visited ABMA’s President Mark Fultz the annual Suppliers Display and other networking events. This included the pirate-themed Suppliers Reception. The annual ABMA golf outing was also well attended. The guest speakers were Bill Napolitano, who spoke on “Using Assessment Tools To Build A Better, More Aligned Workforce”; Steve McClatchy, who gave a presentation titled “Leading Relationships: Communicate Effectively, Resolve Conflict And Build A Culture Of High Trust”; and John Kennedy, who discussed “Vision, Values and Volition.” Among those at this year’s ABMA Annual Convention were 24 firsttime attendees, which Fultz said is extremely important. “First-time attendees are the lifeblood of any organization. We all want

to do our part to encourage more people to come and experience what a great organization we have,” Fultz said. “There were also 44 exhibitors at this year’s Suppliers Display. This was the second highest number since 2007.” Much discussion and planning also took place for next year’s 100th ABMA Annual Convention, scheduled for March 22-25, 2017, at the Hyatt Grand Cypress, in Orlando, FL. “Our convention in 2017 promises to be a knockout,” Fultz said. “I have been a member for 23 years. Each convention seems to get better. Next year’s convention should be the best yet. “Our mission is to ensure that everyone who attends the ABMA Annual Convention feels welcome, has fun and finds value for his/her company.”

his year’s Opening Business Session, held March 3, featured representatives from two European brush associations as well as introductions of new ABMA members and first-time convention attendees. FEIBP/European Brushware Federation representative Philip Coward, of Hill Brush Inc., Mere, Wiltshire, United Kingdom, invited everyone to attend the FEIBP Brush Conference. This year the annual event is scheduled for September 7, 8 and 9 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Visit www.congress.eurobrush.com for more information. The event was recommended by ABMA President Mark Fultz prior to Coward’s address. “I had the opportunity to visit my first FEIBP meeting last September. Over the years, I have heard what a great organization it is, and how welcoming their members are, and I found this to be absolutely true,” Fultz said. During his address, Coward also presented a report on the current

business climate in Europe, one that has experienced various challenges over the past several years. “The European Union (EU) has had a number of serious matters to deal with in the past year. There have been continuing (economic) problems in Greece as well as the unprecedented migration of refugees into Europe,” Coward said. “There is also the June referendum for voters in the United Kingdom, which will ask whether or not the UK should stay in the EU. This is a concern from a business point of view as it brings uncertainty. We will see what happens. The EU, as a whole, has seen little growth over the past 12 months.” He added that unemployment rates in such European countries as Spain and Greece remain high. “We are living in unpredictable times,” Coward added. Daniel Strowitzki, representing Messe Freiburg/InterBrush, reminded ABMA members that the upcoming InterBrush trade fair is scheduled for April 27-29, 2016, in Freiburg, Germany. This global specialized trade fair — held once every four years — features machinery, materials and accessory equipment for the broom, brush, paint roller and mop industries. “It’s a sold out show for exhibitors. Meanwhile, visitor registration is currently available online,” Strowitzki said. Visit www.interbrush.com for more information.

New this year will be a kickoff event to InterBrush, taking place in downtown Freiburg on Tuesday, April 26, according to Strowitzki. “Included in this event will be an exhibition featuring 150 years of brush making,” he said. Several new ABMA active (manufacturer) and affiliate (supplier) member companies were also recognized during the Opening Business Session. Representatives who were in attendance at the Opening Business Session spoke about their individual companies. They included: • Steve Bernier, of Les Brosses Lacasse, St-Alphonse, QC, who explained “brosses” is a French word for “brushes.” The company refurbishes, designs and manufactures various types of products, including industrial brushes; • Donald Dray, of Fiberglass Innovations, Rockford, IL, who stated: “We make a variety of fiberglass products, ranging from simple rods to fairly complex profiles. This includes items featuring a variety of chemistries, depending on specific product use, tensile strength, etc.” Dray added that the company has been in business for 30-plus years; • P.G. Tissa, of Tissa Saw Mill & Timber Stores, Kadawatha, Sri Lanka, who explained the company exports such products as brush backs to North America, Europe and the Far East; and, • Carsten Bo Pedersen, of Vikan A/S, Skive, Denmark, who said the company has been manufacturing brooms and brushes for 120 years, and

A highlight of the ABMA Annual Convention is the Suppliers Display program. This year’s event featured 44 exhibitors.

“It’s a great time to look toward the future, especially in light of the upcoming InterBrush exhibition in April, and the 100th ABMA celebration in 2017,” Fultz said. “The ABMA Board of Directors has been discussing the possibility of updating our logo for some time. It was not an easy decision. Certainly, there is a lot of historical significance with the previous logo. “However, there were also a couple of drawbacks that we often noticed over the years. If you Google ABMA, our association rarely comes up on top. Typically, we find that there is the American Boiler Manufacturers Association, the Animal Behavior Management Alliance — which uses a logo similar to our previous one — and the American Bearing Manufacturers Association. Therefore, in anticipation of our 100th anniversary, we updated the logo and it will be featured at InterBrush. We are also going to completely

Rebecca is a hard working student with a rich and diverse history of club and community involvement. She is a very worthy recipient,” he said. Fultz added that the ABMA Foundation is a catalyst for uniting people and organizations, making a difference through better education and opportunity. “We secure contributions and provide grants for sustainable programs in research, education and assistance for our industry associates and their families in need,” Fultz said. “(The Foundation’s) strategic ties with ABMA, coupled with its strong volunteer leadership and generous donors, give it a powerful yet flexible infrastructure to anticipate and quickly respond to the needs affecting our industry, and the welfare of its associates.” Fultz added that application forms for future scholarships can be found at the ABMA website. “We also certainly welcome tax deductible contributions to the ABMA Foundation. It’s very gratifying to know that as we approach our 100th anniversary as an association, we are in a very strong position to give back to our industry, member associates and their families,” Fultz said. Another major topic at this year’s Opening Business Session was next year’s 100th ABMA 5 SECONDS anniversary celebration. Part of this event will be the LATER release of a documentary film titled, “The Brush Industry: A Manufacturing Love Story,” produced by Robin Christian Peters, of Dreamscape Design. “We have been working for several years on this BEFORE AFTER (documentary), trying to capture the essence of our industry and organization. The majority of ABMA Drone Delivery? Board members have had the opportunity to see the Not yet - But the ability to ship a long mopstick in a short documentary as it’s been developed thus far. The documentary will show how resilient, vibrant and important our industry has been, and how we are well positioned to carry on for kevin@monahanpartners at least the next 100 years.” 200 N. We are committed to serving the industry as well as increasing brush penetration and usage worldwide.” It was also announced by Fultz during the Opening Business Session that The ABMA Foundation has awarded Rebecca Porter a $2,500 Kathy K Parr Scholarship, helping her with business courses in liberal arts studies at Allegheny College, in Meadville, PA. She is enrolled as an undergraduate student and is the daughter of Mike Porter, an employee of Precision Brush Company. “We are very pleased to award this scholarship to Rebecca as her

anniversary celebration is going to be like next year,” Fultz added. “We have been working for eight or nine years to put this thing together. It’s definitely something you are not going to want to miss. Next year’s convention would present a good opportunity to bring more people from your organization to this event. It’s something you are going to want to share. We are encouraging as many people to attend as possible.” Fultz added that people wanting to participate in the anniversary effort in any way, including the documentary, can contact David Parr or members of the ABMA 100th Anniversary Task Force. Task force members include: Chair Greg Miller; Jeff Malish; Carlos Petzold; Kristin Draper, of Draper Knitting, Canton, MA; Chris Monahan; and Bruce Gale. Fultz also asked ABMA members to make a short video of their employees saying “Happy 100th Anniversary ABMA.” This can be done with a smartphone or video camera. Video snippets should be sent to ABMA documentary producer Robin Christian Peters at robin@dreamscape.la. “We hope to develop a collage of employees wishing our association happy birthday, to be shown at the 100th anniversary celebration. This gives your employees the opportunity to achieve a little bit of fame,” Fultz said. “We think this is going to come together very nicely.” Another highlight to next year’s celebration will be the creation of an artistic piece made entirely of brushes and related parts. “We need donations such as spare brushes, rollers, squeegee parts, etc., — anything you have to help us. These parts don’t have to be perfect. Seconds are welcomed,” Bruce Gale said. Also needed for this project are raw materials in as many colors and textures as possible. “An artist will take these items and incorporate them into an artistic piece,” Gale said. “Donations should be sent to David Parr.”

Fultz added: “We are very greatful with the amount of overall contributions that have been made thus far, and the amount of support that we have gained, for this epic event that will take place next year. I would like to recognize each one of the 100th anniversary sponsors.” Donations to the 100th anniversary effort at four specific levels include the following benefits: • Platinum — Donations or pledges of $50,000 and above. Committee Reports Highlight Closing Business Session

arious ABMA committee reports were presented during this year’s Closing Business Session, held on March 5. This included the ABMA Finance Committee report, presented by the committee’s Chair and ABMA Treasurer Scott Enchelmaier. He reported 2015 was a very strong year for the association. Due to its current solid financial

health, the ABMA Board of Directors voted to keep member and supplier dues for 2016 at the same level as the previous year. ABMA Convention Committee Chair Carlos Petzold discussed the locations and dates of the next four ABMA Annual Conventions. They are: March 22-25, 2017, at the Hyatt Grand Cypress, Orlando, FL; March 21-24, 2018, at the Westin Kierland, Scottsdale, AZ; March 20-23, 2019, at Paradise Island, The Bahamas; and, March 4-7, 2020, at the Renaissance Vinoy, St. Petersburg, FL. ABMA Public Relations Committee Chair Greg Miller reported that most of the association’s public relations activities are currently being directed toward the 100th anniversary celebration. “We will have an outstanding venue in Orlando next year. Our committee continues to meet, and we are getting closer to finalizing details for this event and program,” Miller said. “Please be on the lookout for more information regarding the 100th anniversary celebration. It will be found on the newly released ABMA website as well as on the association’s Facebook page, email blasts and through the trade press.” ABMA will also have an exhibition stand at the upcoming InterBrush, Miller said. It will be manned by David Parr and other association representatives. Miller and Carlos Petzold also spoke of the need for greater participation in the ABMA William A. Cordes Innovation Excellence Award. The award is designed to recognize outstanding innovation regarding a manufactured product, component or service designed for the brush industry. It was reported that not enough entries were submitted for this year’s award. “We need at least three submissions to have a contest. It’s an important award that showcases innovation and technology which drives our industry,” Petzold said. “Many companies involved with ABMA are developing new products and innovations every year. It’s important to

celebrate this for your company. The award’s rules are listed on the ABMA website.” ABMA Safety & Standards Committee Chair Scott Enchelmaier reported on updates involving ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and ASTM compliance issues. He also stated that the safety slip program remains available for power brush manufacturers. New icondriven safety slips include a manufacturer’s mark that has to be submitted to the committee for identification purposes. Enchelmaier spoke as well of the ABMA Expert Witness Program, which remains available to any member company that becomes involved in litigation. ABMA Statistical Committee Chair Jill Shinners was unable to attend this year’s Closing Business Session. Therefore, David Parr presented her report, urging association members to participate in the upcoming ABMA Wage Survey, which will take place later this year. “It’s a very important and useful benchmarking survey. A lot of companies use this survey to help evaluate their wage and benefits structure,” Parr said. “The survey is designed by our members. Steps are taken to make sure it remains current and features useful information.” It was also noted during the Closing Business Session that Kevin Monahan, of Monahan Partners, Arcola, IL, presented a report at the ABMA Broom & Mop Division Meeting, on March 2, discussing last year’s National Broom, Mop & Brush Meeting. This event is held each fall in St. Louis. Monahan is the current co-chairman of the meeting. “We had a great time last fall, and plan to hold the next event on Nov. 17-18 in St. Louis,” Monahan said. “It’s a very efficient and affordable meeting, featuring guest speakers, industry reports and networking opportunities. Last year we saw a three-year high in attendance, and hope to have an even better turnout for this year.”

PG 16

In other action during the Closing Business Session, the following ABMA bylaw changes were approved by attending membership. They are: • Restore voting privileges for the Past President; • Removal of references to the Management Liaison, as there has been no Management Liaison position since 2002; • Reduce the number of directors from 18 to 17, due to the removal of the Management Liaison position; • Elect six directors from the Active Membership and six directors from the Affiliate/Supplier Membership, without the divisional restrictions of the past; and, • Create four-year terms for all directors not serving on the Executive Board. “The ABMA Board of Directors felt the need to modify these bylaws to further streamline ABMA and our convention process. The goal has been to make (the Association) more efficient,” Fultz said. “As board members, our focus is to provide as much value as possible to membership, and have the convention run as smoothly as possible.”

Looking Ahead With Excitement

oon after the Closing Business Session of the 99th ABMA Annual Convention came to an end, thoughts quickly turned to next year’s big 100th celebration as well as what the future holds for the brush and related industries. “We view the 100th anniversary not so much as a platform to look backward, but also as a launching pad to look forward,” Parr said, after this year’s Annual Meeting. “We want to celebrate our industry today — its current competitiveness and how well poised it is to compete in the future. We are in a good place as an industry.”

ith more than 150 years of combined experience in the brush industry, Boucherie and Borghi design, manufacture and install brush making machines worldwide. The Boucherie Borghi Group offers technology for every brush maker, in any part of the world, for all kinds of projects, for all budgets. We provide all the brush manufacturers the right solution for their needs, helping steady growth, offering safe investments and providing reliable support. Meeting customers’ requests is a beginning, giving more to them is our promise for the future. A good mix of proven and reliable technologies and new innovative and advanced developments is what the Boucherie Borghi Group will display at InterBrush 2016.

The DMU machine (1 filling tool, 1 drill, 1 or 2 clamping stations, 5 axes) represents the ideal equipment to minimize production changeover time. The DMU is perfect for both beginners, who will find an easy way to start brush manufacturing, and experts, giving them a

very efficient tool to make specialty brushes in smaller production runs. Vertical tufting machines are the best compromise between productivity, ease-ofuse and maintenance and versatility. The SMART V2 is a family of double-head, vertical drilling and filling machines, driven by 4 or 5 axes of movement and running in a continuous work-cycle. The SMART V2 is ideal for the production of flat brushes, brooms and round head toilet brushes, at a reduced investment cost. In this vertical, double-head machine family, the top of the range for performance and flexibility is the STAR V2 (2 filling tools, 3 drills, continuous work-cycle, 5 axes), which is capable of covering the whole range of products — from banisters to clothes brushes, from tank brushes to toilet brushes — and at the same time delivers a very high production output at the maximum level in versatility. When it comes to bigger volumes and higher automation, double-head carousel machines are the answer. The range of carousel machines starts with manually fed machines like the STAR R32, a 5 axis carousel machine with 3 working stations: manual loading/offloading of the brush backs, double drilling station and double filling station. The STAR R32 can produce a very wide range of household brush models and has ergonomically designed guards to ensure the maximum ease-of-work and safety for the operator. For the production of brooms and brushes with natural as well as synthetic filling materials, the TCU offers a reliable solution and high output. The TCU range of machines is based on a modular concept: the basic machine is manually loaded, but automatic handle loading, integrated trimming as well as other automation are all available. The TCA is a high-speed machine for fine brushware such as dish brushes, and the TCU-T is a long-stroke machine for heavier brooms. The STAR R2 is a high-output production work cell for dish brushes. It has automatic block feeding and 4 working stations: loading, drilling, filling and finishing. Facial brushes are gaining popularity very quickly and are now a substantial part of the market of the personal brush segment. Boucherie is a leader in machinery for this

market, and the specially-built machines of the TB3 series, with 4 or 5 axis CNC control, make these brushes at speeds up to 1,000 tufts per minute, without any index time in-between the products. Very fine cylindrical nylon or tapered filaments can be used, and automatic fiber loading systems are available for both material types. The patented CNC-controlled picker eye opening, which allows a precise control of the number of strands from one tuft to the other, is a definite advantage when manufacturing these high-tech brushes. The IDM machine is a compact, high-output machine for the production of small twisted-inwire brushes, such as mascara brushes. There are variants available with spool feed as well as with puck feed of the bristles. For the production of small and medium runs of high-quality hairbrushes, a special version of the DMU-1 is available with a short-stroke filling tool and a high-precision fiber picking system. This compact machine can produce rubber pads, radial as well as flat hairbrushes, bath brushes and nailbrushes with very short change-over times. The newly designed GIOTTO extends the already very wide range of Borghi solutions for technical and industrial brush manufacturers. GIOTTO is meant for high volume production of disc brushes, featuring continuous operations along its 3 stations. The first station allows the operator to load the virgin discs while the machine is drilling and filling them in the other two positions. Every time the drilling/filling operation is completed, the machine indexes

bringing the brush automatically to the next station. When the working cycle is completed, the disc brush returns to the first station where a CNC-controlled trimmer takes action, accurately finishing the brush, which is ready now to be taken off by the operator and replaced with a new virgin block. GIOTTO is available with a standard mechanical filling head or e-STROKE technology, Borghi’s patented electronic filling head. ARCHIMEDE (vertical filling, 1 filling tool, 2 drills, 5 axes, 2 or 3 clamping stations) and JUPITER (horizontal filling, 1 filling tool, 1 drill, 5 axes, 2 clamping stations) will also be on display with improved performance.

Oral Care Toothbrush Production Lines And Work Centers

Boucherie has developed a variety of toothbrush manufacturing equipment. Machines range from the compact high-performance TB3-A/100 stand-alone tufting machine, through the TB3-TS and TB3-FS, which are economically priced, full production lines for

less demanding applications, to the sophisticated TB3-FM and TB3-FM/L, which are available with all kinds of automation. All of these single-head machines run at continuous speeds up to 1,000 tufts per minute. For the highest production, Boucherie offers the TB32-Flexi range of machines, which can be equipped with 2 or more filling tools; with this concept Boucherie has taken one more step ahead of the competition when it comes to output, flexibility and sustainability of toothbrush production lines. This is the world’s first modular multi-filling tool machine which can be built with a footprint to fit to the available workspace, and with all the required additional equipment to manufacture any type of toothbrush with exceptional quality and high efficiency.

Anchorless Toothbrush Production Lines And Work Centers

In the field of machinery for the oral care industry, Boucherie clearly established a leadership position in anchorless technology with the tried and proven AFT technology, and the more recently introduced AMR technology. For 16 years now, Boucherie has built a vast experience in this field, and has become the partner of choice for the world’s major toothbrush makers in the development of new products. The AFT/CNC was the first commercially available machine for tufting toothbrushes without using anchors. Block tufts, strip tufts and various combinations of tuft angles widen the range of design options for toothbrush heads. AFT and AMR machines are available in different levels of automation, from completely hand-loaded to fully automatic. A unique feature of the Boucherie anchorless lines, is the integrated pre-end-rounding of the filaments. The filaments are pre-cut pucks that are endrounded in the quintuple fiber box, with individual end-rounding settings for each channel of the fiber box. This means that each type or color of filament can be end-rounded with the parameters that are best suited for that material. Because the tuft shaping happens later, long or short filaments are end-rounded in the same conditions. Furthermore, the endrounding happens far away from the finished product, which avoids contamination of the toothbrush with dust particles.

With V-Air Machines, a new member has been added to the Boucherie Borghi Group in the past year. The AVT-S12 tufting machine is very compact and simple to maintain. It uses vacuum technology to make up to 30 brush heads per minute, and the products have an excellent strand and tuft retention, which can feature tufts of different section shapes. On top of that, the technology produces extremely little filament waste. The FRM is a stand-alone, preend-rounding machine that end-rounds and cuts the filament pucks with great precision, and matches the fiber requirement of 3 AVT tufting lines. The new SHARP BLD is the ultimate solution for finishing virtually any type of brush such as tank brushes, fender brushes, toilet brushes and other speciality brushes. It has 2 clamping stations, so the operator can load and unload the brushes in one position, while on the second position the trimming and flagging units are working on the previously loaded brush. The tools are CNC controlled, ensuring the maximum flexibility and the possibility to program various curved brush profiles. The already popular SHARP 6 trimmer will also be on display with three totally renewed versions: SHARP 6 PLUS, SHARP 6 BASIC and SHARP 6 ePLUS.

Trimmers

In regards to twisted-in-wire brushes, the ultimate solution for the production of twisted brushes with loop-end or closed-end will be launched at InterBrush: the U TWIST machine. The OCTOPUS 2 mop making machine will also be present with a new design and new features.

or 140 years and six generations, Green has been producing brush ferrules and distributing allied products such as wood handles, plastic handles, brush pins and Milliken Nailing equipment. Changes in Green’s products have reflected the changes taken place throughout the industry, in brush styles and brush use. Founded in Newark, NJ, Charles E. Green & Son was established in 1876 by Charles Edward Green. Charles was an accomplished New England mechanic who invented a series of ferrule making processes during his career, several of which he patented. For example, brushes during Charles’ time used twine or wire to bind the bristles to the handle. Green invented the first method of using sheet steel. The sheet steel was corrugated to imitate the secure hold of the wire or twine and dipped in hot solder. Following its long tradition of innovation, exciting developments have taken place over the last few years. In 2014, Green acquired a steel stamp engraving company. Green has been using steel stamps in its ferrule production for over 125 years. It was a natural fit. Not only does Green Engraving produce stamps for the general metal working industry, it also allows for quicker lead times on custom logo ferrules and new custom die sets in its own operation. Visit www.greenengraving.com for more information. In 2010, Charles E. Green & Son purchased Milliken Machine Co. In the past five years, Green has concentrated on improving the quality of the existing Milliken machines and components. Some time during the late 1970s, Milliken developed and built the first automatic paint brush assembly equipment. The J-16 inserted a handle into a brush head, inserted nails and decorated the handle. Although it served the industry well for many years, it has been clear since purchasing Milliken that the industry is ready for the next generation of automatic assembly machines. Green has been developing the new Milliken adaptive automaton Model MX-20 for over two years, and hopes to debut the machine in late 2016/early 2017. Incorporating the latest robotic technology from ABB, the machine will be completely adaptable to product size changes, configuration changes and product handling methods with virtually no mechanical changeover. It will be as simple as selecting a program on a touch control pad. There will be no tooling changeover because the tooling will be universal and adaptive. To learn more about the Model MX-20 and its other incredible features, visit the InterBrush booth 3.3.1. wide range of items that complete any customer’s cleaning products line is supplied by G.D.F. di De Franceschi Gabriella & C. sas., of Bazzano, Italy. Along with other offerings, the company provides standard plastic blocks for brooms, brushes, floor brushes, squeegees and other articles. This includes natural varnished plastic blocks and solid plastic blocks, available in a wide range of colors — all produced by Mileva, of Italy. G.D.F. President Gabriella De Franceschi said her company continues to receive a lot of interest regarding Mileva’s wide range of plastic blocks, which are also very costcompetitive. She looks forward to meeting both current, and potential, customers during InterBrush 2016, scheduled for April 27-29 in Freiburg, Germany. “I feel Mileva is the best, and most reliable, producer of blocks in Italy. I have worked for them for many years,” De Franceschi said. “Mileva is the manufacturer for all the plastic blocks that G.D.F. sells. My job is to group together these goods for customers. I can help customers save money on transportation costs. They also only have to pay one supplier.” She added that color options are in greater demand today when it comes to blocks used for a variety of brooms and brushes. “With the blocks we are providing, by adding just a reasonable extra cost to the price of natural foamed plastic, customers can have their choice of colors without paying a high extra amount for the painting of the blocks. Since our blocks are plastic foam molded, our customers can save money,” De Franceschi said. “Usually, plastic foam is made of gray or yellow, but not in the wide variety of colors that we offer. “It’s all about new technology. We have received a lot of interest regarding the difference between painted blocks and our colored plastic foamed blocks. It takes time to understand the possibilities.” Along with its block line, G.D.F. also supplies such high quality cleaning items as extension poles, specialty

buckets, dust pans, mops and metal handles. These products are shipped throughout the world. “We always strive to provide quality products for the different markets we serve. Business has been good, and our products are enjoying strong demand,” De Franceschi said. “I have been in this field for many years now, including 33 years with G.D.F. It’s always a pleasure to work with our customers.” De Franceschi started G.D.F. in 1983 after gaining experience in the field of synthetic monofilaments. The aim of the company remains the same — to provide brush and broom makers with components so that they can make their products from one source. “After working for some of the major Italian monofilament companies, I decided to become a sole trader with the main objective of grouping together all of the necessary components for customers, and servicing the worldwide market with quality products, reliable service and competitive prices,” De Franceschi said. “Long-term agreements — most of them on an exclusive basis with my specialist suppliers — provide my company with products featuring required standards and special prices for competitive sales.” Caring about customers’ needs, along with quick service and offering quality items at competitive prices, separate G.D.F. from the competition. Improving on the company’s ability in these areas continues to be an increasingly important goal. “It’s also important to inform customers about product solutions which are already present in the market,” De Franceschi said. very four years brush makers worldwide look toward one of the biggest events of the sector - the InterBrush fair in Freiburg, Germany. Machine manufacturers and material suppliers show the very latest in brush production. As a leading manufacturer of production machinery for industrial brushes, InterBrush has been the most important fair of the sector for Wöhler Brush Tech for many years. InterBrush provides a good opportunity to take a look at the coming Wöhler Brush Tech highlights. It’s already been four years since representatives of the worldwide brush industry last came together in Freiburg to present both innovative products and the latest technology. Many are already eagerly awaiting the highlights of the 2016 fair. The focus of interest among the industrial brush producers will be mainly on the increased efficiency and quality of machines and new products. This is exactly what Wöhler Brush Tech has concentrated on over the last few years. Wöhler Brush Tech manufactures machines based on a modular system, and yet developed on and integrating custom demands.

Highlights From The World Of Strip Brush Machines

Wöhler Brush Tech – that’s the world of brushmaking machines. This world consists of various areas of brush types. The world of strip brush machines offers a whole range of machines for strip brush production. Together, with a diversity of available additional modules, each machine can be tailored to specific customer requirements. The world of strip brush machines from Wöhler Brush Tech will bring forth a true InterBrush highlight. Although only little information has been released to date, Wöhler will present a low-cost strip brush machine, along with the proven models SBM 92 and SBM 840. The concept of this machine was not only to ease entry into the strip brush market, but also to offer existing strip brush producers the opportunity of developing new products without blocking production on their high performance machines. The new strip brush machine is also ideal for producing midsize runs.

MSB 960

Production Machines For Power Brushes At InterBrush 2016

Visitors will be particularly excited about seeing the latest in the world of power brushes. Apart from presenting innovative twist-knot forms, Wöhler will also set new standards in production output. A total of three new machines from this area will be presented at the Wöhler fair stand of around 500 m², with the main focus on twist-knot and segment brushes. These new machines, expanding the ZVA and BSM model ranges from Wöhler Brush Tech, will be on show at InterBrush.

Production Of Twisted Brushes For Industrial Applications Newly Defined

With the TIM 4, Wöhler Brush Tech will present the world first 4 core wire fully automatic machine. For the brush industry, this means nothing less than new possibilities and application areas that are just waiting to be developed. New production possibilities for small twisted brushes are illustrated by the MTI 960. Along with machine efficiency, another factor of growing importance in brush production will be customized products. Brush producers need machines offering flexibility regarding customer-specific requirements. Machines for subsequent processing, such as brush trimming, are tremendously important. With the trimming bench TU 500, Wöhler Brush Tech has successfully realized these requirements. Optimized for trimming segment brushes or roll brushes, the TU 500 also offers the possibility of contour trimming. The world of paintbrush and roller machines will be another area showed at the Wöhler fair stand. Following the acquisition of the roll pin division of MBK Maschinenbau GmbH, new machines have been taken into the portfolio. These enhance the existing machine range with several interesting applications. In addition to the innovations Wöhler will be showcasing at InterBrush, additional machines will be available for viewing at the company’s

or more than 70 years, DuPont Filaments has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations. Building on a legacy of innovation, our global team of scientists and development engineers continues to expand the broad range of filaments offerings for premium quality brushes and industrial applications, giving leading global brands and brush manufacturers ever more flexibilities in brush designs. To see more highlights DuPont Filaments brings to InterBrush 2016, visit us at Stand 2.5.4, Hall 2.

Health Deserves The Best Filaments - Toothbrush Filaments

The most important component of a toothbrush is the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, DuPont Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of DuPont™ Tynex® (nylon 612) and DuPont™ Herox® (nylon 610). Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using DuPont filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrushes are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, DuPont Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio. DuPont™ Tynex® Brilliance Pro filaments, launched in late 2015, are a prime example of DuPont’s newest innovation that combines both visual attractiveness and functional benefits. With its unique diamond shape profile and distinguished color effects, it is the ultimate filament for premium toothbrushes. The soft bristle of Tynex® Brilliance Pro, with its outstanding translucency and glisten-ing look brought by a proprietary color recipe, will make any toothbrush an “eyecatcher” on the shelf, while retaining the superior cleaning ability for interdental and plaque removal performance. As Herox® was successfully reintroduced to the toothbrush filament market by DuPont, it is known as a “green” material, with 67 percent of its ingredients coming from renewable sourced raw material. PG 36

Another innovation, DuPont™ Herox® Binchotan filaments, was added to the product portfolio in 2015 as DuPont adapted its product strategy to provide tailor-made solutions targeting customer needs and growth in Asia Pacific. Capturing the emerging trend of using charcoal in various dispensary applications, especially in Asia, DuPont Filaments brought yet another innovation to the market by combining nylon and binchotan charcoal powder. The binchotan charcoal powder used by DuPont is manufactured from 100 percent natural wood through a specialized carbonization process in Japan, where binchotan originated. The combination of nylon and binchotan, with perceived functional benefits commonly known in Asia and increasingly in other regions, allows toothbrush designers to bring new concepts of toothbrushes to consumers. DuPont™ Herox® Link filaments, another member of the Herox® family and a “new” nylon material using co-extrusion technology, was recently introduced to toothbrush customers. These are customers seeking alternative nylon filament solutions with better cost effectiveness, and that also retain the good performance needed to better satisfy their markets in need of comparatively softness for toothbrush filaments.

When it comes to the cosmetics industry, consumer needs are dynamic and ever-changing. There is also an increasing expectation for high performance tools as consumer cosmetics applications are more and more specialized toward professional grades. From powder to eyeliner, mascara to nail polish, as well as facial cleaning brushes, consumers are looking for brushes with high performance in durability, ease of cleaning, soft touch-and-feel, powder pickup / release … etc. Even if different animal hair is still available as an option for cosmetic brushes in the market, responsible cosmetic brands are already leading the trend to be “cruelty free,” and use only synthetic filaments in their brushes. DuPont™ Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from DuPont’s unique polyester-based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that

create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes, with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance

versus brushes made with animal hair. Hygiene in cosmetic products is a serious but often forgotten concern. If you think your makeup brush is bacteria free, you should think again. Infection-causing bacteria can thrive in cosmetic brushes and products that are not adequately cleaned or are used beyond their indicated product lifespan. DuPont is helping tackle this problem with DuPont™ Tynex® StaClean® fine filaments, launched in 2015. Independent verification by an authoritative third-party testing agency has confirmed that Tynex® StaClean® fine filaments are 99 percent effective in bacteria inhibition. This is due to the silver-oxygen combination in the filaments that inhibits the growth of micro-organisms. The launch of Tynex® StaClean® fine filaments addresses the hygienic concern for cosmetic brushes.

Efficiency Deserves The Best Filaments – Abrasive Filaments

Like most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking for ways to increase productivity. The emphasis is on getting more square

feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used are quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extremes in the PH scale. The technical resources at DuPont Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range that these filaments can be used in. Brushes made with these filaments deliver cleaning performance over an improved service life, helping steel manufacturers achieve higher productivity. Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. DuPont™ Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need.

Creativity Deserves The Best Filaments – Paintbrush Filaments

When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics, such as DuPont™ Tynex®, DuPont™ Chinex® and DuPont™ Orel® brand filaments, quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, DuPont Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer cross-section that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.

ilkemp started its activities while it was still part of the Hoechst group during the 1970s. At the beginning, the company produced only monofilaments for bristles and the fishing industry, but today Filkemp offers a vast range of filament solutions for the following applications: • • • • • • •

40 Years Of Monofilament Experience

Abrasive filaments; Paper machine clothing and filtration fabrics; Sport and commercial fishing; Mooring ropes; Tennis racket strings; Grass trimming and agriculture; and, PET-G, PLA and Nylon filaments for 3D printing.

Filkemp is internationally recognized as a leading edge manufacturer and reliable partner, both in terms of product quality and service, with competitive prices and a worldwide presence. The key to Filkemp’s continuing success is not only its continuing investment program, paired with productivity improvements and sales-driven R&D, but also the company’s rigorous quality control policies, 24/7 production flexibility and long-term commitment to its customers.

Research And Development

Filkemp has been producing abrasive monofilaments based on PA6, PA6.10 and PA6.12 for polishing and deburring tools for the automotive and metal industry, decorative stones and textile industry, as well as for floor care and other markets since 2011. In this innovative business area, Filkemp aims to be one of the world’s biggest producers in the near future. For polishing and deburring processes under extremely difficult conditions, high performance thermoplastics (also called semi-crystalline polymers) are used to ensure optimum thermal resistance and stiffness recovery capabilities. To improve grit fixation within the polymer matrix, as well as thermal and chemical resistance, highly effective stabilizers are added during the extrusion process. Which raw material is best suited for a given application depends on individual working conditions. During the abrasive filament development, special care is taken on filament stiffness, grit distribution and fixation within the polymer matrix.

High Quality Abrasive Filaments

• Round or flat profile • 0.25 to 3.00 mm diameters • Custom-made products

• Grit sizes of 36 to 4000 • Level or crimped finishing • In a broad variety of colors

• Bundles, Spools or Hanks • 44 to 1300 mm cuts • SiC, AO, Ceramic or Diamond grit

In the North American market, Filkemp recently teamed up with Illinois-based AST Filaments, operating on behalf of American Select Tubing (www.astubing.com). AST recently acquired Filkemp’s former distributor, Carolina Filaments, and will continue offering filament and brush making solutions through the same levels of service, product quality and competitiveness that customers had come to expect from Carolina Filaments.

nterBrush — long known as a major international trade fair designed for manufacturers, suppliers and buyers of machines, accessories and raw materials involved in the brush, broom, paint roller and mop industries — is scheduled for April 27-29, 2016, in Freiburg, Germany. Held every four years in Freiburg, InterBrush 2016 will again take place at the exhibition and conference center known as Messe Freiburg. This modern complex combines more than four decades of event knowledge and experience with charm and state-of-the-art technology. According to organizers, InterBrush offers attendees the opportunity to become better acquainted with important trends and the latest innovations found in the brush machinery and related industries. In addition, InterBrush visitors will have the chance to speak face-to-face with many experts and decision-makers from all over the world. Approximately 200 exhibitors from 30 countries will be presenting raw materials, semi-finished products and machinery across an exhibition area of 21,500 m2 during InterBrush 2016. Some 7,000 attendees, from more than 85 countries, are expected for this event.

Exhibition space for InterBrush 2016 is sold out. According to the trade fair’s officials, 98 percent of exhibitors from InterBrush 2012 had announced four years ago that they would be back for the next event, while 87 percent of visitors were sure they would also return in 2016. As of February 2016, all exhibition halls were fully booked, all market leaders and major producers were registered and hotel enquiries for the trade fair date were high. Among the expected attendees and exhibitors at InterBrush 2016 will be many representatives and companies from North America. In fact, the American Brush Manufacturers Association (ABMA) is a supporting contributor and limited financial partner to the event, and values the contribution InterBrush makes to the worldwide brush industry, according to ABMA Executive Director David Parr. “We promote InterBrush to our members, and the industry as a whole, and will have an exhibition stand at the event, just as in past years,” Parr said. “The greatest value of InterBrush is the ability to actually shop brush machinery. That is, to go from one machine to another to investigate the specific differences between filling tools, cutters, robots and related components. “In addition, it’s easy at InterBrush to source and shop raw materials and ancillary products and services, since there are so many vendors at the event.” According to InterBrush officials, many associations and manufacturers have observed that companies in the brush, mop, roller and broom industries tend to postpone replacement investments until the next InterBrush, where they can find out about new state-of-the-art technologies and predict which types of machines their industries will likely use in the years to come. InterBrush becomes a showcase every four years for the latest developments, including prototypes, that provide a glimpse into the future. Visitors and exhibitors are international, hailing from such countries as Algeria, the United Kingdom, Belgium, China, Germany, France, India, Italy, Lithuania, Sri Lanka, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Hungary, Canada, Mexico and the United States. “InterBrush is a must, as it unites representatives of a small, yet highly developed, industry that breathes high-tech products and constant innovation,” FEIBP European Brushware Federation President Pierre Simler said. “It would be downright irresponsible to miss (InterBrush),” added Hans Zahn, representing the German Brush Manufacturers Association, underlining the importance of the trade fair. A new attraction to InterBrush in 2016 will be a special exhibition opening on April 26 in the historic Meckel-Halle, located in downtown Freiburg. The exhibition will be titled, “From Broom To Art.” The event will be presented by French and German brush associations. Visit www.interbrush.com for more information.

TOOTHBRUSH INDUSTRY STILL

oday’s toothbrushes come in many shapes, sizes and colors. They are often marketed for individual groups, such as children, senior citizens and those with disabilities. There are even toothbrushes made for the pet care industry. Broom, Brush & Mop Magazine recently talked with representatives of two U.S. toothbrush companies to learn more about the state of this important industry, and what trends are driving the market.

ince the 1980s, officials at RADIUS, of Kutztown, PA, have been designing and manufacturing toothbrushes and other personal care items that look different for a reason. They are produced with ergonomics and better health in mind. “We focus on evolving the objects used in daily life that can make life easier and add joy to mundane tasks, while still being sensitive to our impact on the environment,” RADIUS CEO Saskia Foley said. “Our products are made using low-energy machines in a woman-owned, solarpowered facility in Pennsylvania. This sustainable manufacturing process allows us to reduce waste. What little waste RADIUS does create is recycled and reused to make new products. Each product is inspected by hand and designed to last. “We offer toothbrushes for adults and children that are manufactured with premium vegetable-based bristles. These products are ergonomically designed to provide the best brushing experience possible.” Looking to reinvent something that had not been changed much for a long time, architects Kevin Foley and James O’Halloran invented a new kind of toothbrush over 30 years ago. It looked different compared to the conventional small-headed, hard-bristled toothbrushes of the day. What they developed was the RADIUS Original Toothbrush. It featured a large handle and came in both right- and left-handed versions. Also, the product included very fine filaments placed on a large oval head. By 1988, RADIUS also introduced another toothbrush design called the SCUBA. It looked similar to the Orignal, but featured a flexible, rubber handle. The purpose of the non-slip, flexible rubber material was to help the user avoid applying too much pressure on the brush head. The Original and the SCUBA are still available today from RADIUS, along with other toothbrush products, including those designed for children. Also available are complementary items such as travel cases and dental floss. All products, with the exception of the dental floss, are

produced by RADIUS at its Kutztown facility. Today, Kevin Foley’s daughter, Saskia Foley, heads the business. RADIUS manufactures products from a 20,000-square-foot solarpowered restored feed mill. The facility dates to the early 1800s in Kutztown, located in Pennsylvania Amish country. “We’ve grown approximately 50 percent over the past four years, and our growth continues,” Saskia Foley said. “We’ve experienced tremendous growth internationally. Approximately 20 percent of our sales stem from our export channel. We’re extremely proud to have won the 2015 Governor’s ImPAct Award for Export in southeast Pennsylvania. “We’re continuing to develop innovative designs and strive to introduce one to two new products per year. Products made in the United States are becoming more popular, while the natural product industry has also grown tremendously over the years.” Since most of the company’s products are made at its Kutztown facility, Saskia Foley said it’s imperative the company continue to focus on greater automation in the manufacturing process. “Products made in America, especially high-end items like ours, are typically more expensive to manufacture. We always strive to reduce expenses and keep our costs as low as possible, so we can continue to manufacture and operate in the United States,” she said. “RADIUS offers premium, niche-related products that are well merchandised. This remains our major focus.” New product introductions for the company include the RADIUS TOUR Travel Toothbrush, featuring a 2-in-1 toothbrush and travel case. “We’re planning on 2016 being a big year for RADIUS. This includes a building expansion as well as branching into another category — toothpaste. We’ll be launching the first USDA-certified organic toothpaste available in the USA,” Saskia Foley said. “It seems conventional and premium markets are coming closer together as more BBM MAGAZINE | March/April 2016

consumers make educated choices. “Product quality and effectiveness are moving to the forefront of people’s minds. We, at RADIUS, are looking forward to capitalizing on these trends, and expanding our line into new categories.” Major objectives at RADIUS include properly monitoring the company’s rate of growth, along with searching for additional talent. “Radius has approximately 30 employees, and they’re all integral to our success,” Saskia Foley said. “We thrive on having a core group of loyal employees. mission trip to the Central American country of Guatemala a little over five years ago led a married couple to delve into unknown territory and begin a toothbrush company. Today, Eric Cope heads Smile Squared, a St. Louis, MObased business that sells two types of toothbrushes to North American customers. For every one of its toothbrushes sold, the company donates a toothbrush to an undervprivileged person. It’s the goal of Smile Squared to not only remain a for-profit company, but help a large domestic and international population who simply cannot afford, or have access to, a toothbrush. “People ask me if we are Eric Cope a not-for-profit business. I tell them ‘no,’ one of our goals is to make a profit,” Eric Cope said. “We didn’t want to just beg and borrow for toothbrushes because there is a need. I believe in free enterprise, and the best way to create something sustainable is to follow a solid business plan and provide great products. “Our cornerstone as a business is to remain a giving organization, but we still have to make money. I do consider ‘giving’ as our primary value.” Smile Squared supplies two types of toothbrushes. Its original item features a bamboo handle and comes in child and adult sizes. This product is produced in China. The company’s other line of toothbrushes is called the Colorful Collection. These are plastic-handle adult toothbrushes that feature different color options. They are made by a toothbrush manufacturing company located in the United States. “When we started Smile Squared, we wanted something unique and interesting, which led our company to the bamboo-handle toothbrush. Sales have been very good. A lot of people like using natural products such as bamboo. We want to provide products that are good for both people and the earth,” Eric Cope said. “We have found success selling our products over the Internet. Our toothbrushes can also be found in specialty stores and smaller grocery store chains throughout the country. We have a retail locator available on

our website to help people find our products.” Eric Cope credits his wife, Geri Cope, with greatly helping Smile Squared get off the ground and running. “This business could not be possible without my wife. She is a financial adviser, and Smile Squared certainly has her DNA all over it as well,” Eric Cope said. “She has been instrumental by providing key strategic initiatives, vision and business strategies. “Our company also has a new business partner, and we are looking at different initiatives for 2016. He has significant experience in bringing new products to market. We are exploring how Smile Squared can grow sales in the future, and create a stronger partnership with all customers.” Although Eric Cope has long considered himself an entrepreneur and has been involved with different businesses throughout his working life, it wasn’t until he and his wife took a mission trip to Guatemala that the couple fully realized not everybody can afford, or have easy access to, something as simple as a toothbrush. “All four of our children are internationally adopted. Our oldest son is from Guatemala. My wife and I fell in love with the country years ago when we picked up our son. Later, we had an opportunity to participate in

a mission trip in the country, during which I volunteered at a dental clinic,” Cope said. “I helped teach children at the clinic how they should properly brush their teeth. I soon learned that many of these children didn’t have a toothbrush at home, or had to share a single toothbrush with their entire family. This, of course, can result in tooth decay. It’s a serious health issue that continues to take place not only around the world, but in the United States as well.” Soon, Eric and Geri Cope were looking for ways to help, which eventually led to the creation of Smile Squared. The company officially began in November 2011. Since then, it has been featured in such publications as O, The Oprah Magazine as well as on NBC’s The Today Show. Eric Cope said the business philosophy surrounding Smile Squared remains simple: “When a customer buys one of our toothbrushes, we donate a toothbrush to a person in need. We have established several relationships with non-profit organizations that help us distribute the donated toothbrushes. These toothbrushes have been sent to communities located in all 50 states as well as 26 countries around the world. “We have a person who helps us with product fulfillment, and we also use interns when it comes to our daily operations. I believe in running a lean company.” Eric Cope said he is excited about the future of Smile Squared heading into the remainder of 2016 and beyond. “We are looking to expand how we give, and I am always seeking new products that make the most sense for our business. Smile Squared will continue to reach out to customers who want to make a true difference with their toothbrush purchases,” he said. “I’m thankful for the business we currently have, and being able to provide toothbrushes to people in need. I also want to bring new partners along so we can grow the company.” Contact: Smile Squared, P.O. Box 31183, St. Louis, MO 63131. Website: www.smilesquared.com.

Freiburg is one of Germany’s most popular cities to visit and is the center of a vacation region that includes southern Germany and the nearby countries of France and Switzerland. The city is often associated with the famous Black Forest region, with its traditional cherry-andchocolate gateau and cuckoo clocks. Due to its geography, Freiburg, with a population of approximately 220,000 people, is considered the warmest city in Germany. It boasts a sunny climate and easy access to the Black Forest, making the area a hub for regional tourism. As a university town, Freiburg also offers a wide selection of cultural events, restaurants, coffee shops, museums and art galleries. The area’s pleasant climate allows for extensive wine growing. Freiburg’s traditional cuisine is based on white asparagus (Spargel), river trout and “kässepätzle” (a cheese-covered dish of noodles). In the center of Freiburg’s “old city” is the Münsterplatz, its largest square. A farmers’ market takes place there every day except Sundays. This is also the site of Freiburg’s Münster, a gothic Minster Cathedral constructed of red sandstone, built between 1200 and 1530. The Freiburg Münster is known for its towering spire that can be seen for miles. Freiburg is located in the middle of a dense network of international airports. EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg is located in nearby France, about 40 minutes from Freiburg. In addition, Frankfurt Airport in Germany, one of Europe’s largest hubs, is a two-hour train or car ride from Freiburg. Trains leave from the airport’s long distance train station to Freiburg on a regular basis. Trains also arrive in Freiburg from many other locations in Germany, France and Switzerland. “Freiburg has made great strides recently in attendee transportation logistics, with the addition of a commuter rail system to the Messe,” Parr said. “The new service will make it even easier to travel to InterBrush, greatly lessening the need for a car.” Visit www.freiburg.de for more information.

American Select Tubing Acquires Carolina Filaments

American Select Tubing has announced the acquisition of Carolina Filaments, LLC, effective February 29, 2016. Operating as AST Filaments, the company markets, stocks and distributes filaments for Filkemp (Portugal), Plasticfibre (Italy), and other potential partners to customers in North America and Mexico. “Brian Crawford, founder and owner of Carolina Filaments, remains with AST Filaments to ensure a smooth transition for both customers and suppliers,” said AST. With over 30 years of experience in the brush and filament industry, Crawford works closely with Dustin Maninfior, who is sales manager of AST Filaments, and Jennifer Wright, who has customer service responsibilities for the new venture. Filkemp is a producer of abrasive filaments, and is located near Lisbon, Portugal. ISO certified, Filkemp products using nylon resins in conjunction with silica carbide, aluminum oxide, ceramic, and diamond aggregates provide engineered solutions for industrial, floor care, stone polishing, automotive, and other markets. Plasticfibre, located in Bologna, Italy, is a manufacturer of synthetic filaments including PP, PS, SAN, PVC, polyester, and nylon. Also ISO 9000 certified, Plasticfibre filaments have application in the food service, agricultural, industrial, automotive, as well as janitorial and sanitary supply markets. “The mission at AST filaments will be to continue to offer filament and brush making solutions through the same levels of service, product quality and competitiveness that customers have come to expect from Carolina Filaments. Current plans are to distribute filament products from a 186,000-square-foot location in Mattoon, IL,” according to AST.
