“My Little makes me feel like my time and effort are worth it.” BIG SISTER AUBREY Dear Supporters and Friends, It is with great pleasure we deliver to you the Big Brothers Big Sisters Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2017. This fiscal year has been such a rewarding year with the support of friends like you who do so much for BBBSOK! We have had successful events around the state, we have served over 1,000 children, and we continue to be humbled by your generosity. Serving children in need is our #1 priority at BBBSOK. It is proven that through one-to-one mentorship, we can change a life one child at a time. You are a part of that change. Our Bigs are also the lifeblood of our organization and without their gift of meaningful time our organization and the Littles we serve would not be successful. Your continued friendship and support make it possible for us to transform lives every day. So, on behalf of the entire Governing Board and staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” Warmest Regards,

Eric Fleske, Board Chair Fleske Holding Company

Leadership Team

Dear Friends, As Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma embarks on an updated strategic plan for 2018, we reflect back on those things that we have accomplished as well as challenges we face. We are proud of our work and the achievements of this organization for children in the state of Oklahoma. We are literally changing the face of Oklahoma one child at a time. Each of the 1,065 children we served in 2016-2017 are precious and important to us as well as the volunteers who spend countless hours ‘being a friend’ in a mentoring relationship. In the past 2 ½ years of my tenure at Big Brothers Big Sisters I have had the opportunity to meet and speak with many people across the state. Some that are already engaged in our mission and others that would like to learn more. Our team of staff, board members and volunteers is a force to be reckoned with. Each of us can make a difference and often these efforts go unacknowledged. Words do not express sufficiently how grateful we are for your donations, your time, your advocacy and your passion for our mission. Because of you, we are confident that next year holds many new opportunities for engagement in corporate and individual relationships, in strategic partnerships and life changing moments. Thank you for your commitments and continued support. With Gratitude,

R. Darrell Weaver Chief Executive Officer

about us For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 16, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

71%

of Littles report having a better sense of their future

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma targets the children who need us most, including those living in single parent homes, growing up in poverty and coping with parental incarceration. Starting something begins with finding a great match between a Big and a Little. Making these matches, and performing all the background work involved with them, is possible because of donations from people like you.

children matched with a mentor *October 1, 2016 - September 30, 2017

“I wouldn’t be the man I am today without my Big. I am proof this is a beneficial program,” said former Little Brother, Robert. Big Brother, Mack, and his Little, Robert were first matched back in 2001 in the site based program at Emerson Elementary. “We met and hit it off immediately. We were both interested in the same things” said Big Brother, Mack. Even though they quickly clicked, Mack may not have recognized the impact he was making on his Little so quickly. “I was watching him every step of the way. He probably didn’t know it, but I was. I was wearing a watch in fourth grade because Mack wore one. What fourth grader wears a watch?” After nearly seven years of being matched, Mack moved to Houston, but their bond was set. After staying in touch long-distance, Mack moved back to Tulsa. Around that same time, Robert was looking for his first job and called on his Big Brother for leads. “All I did was put him in touch with someone here at the bank,” said Mack. “He did everything and he impressed everybody here…He went above and beyond in his first job at the bank.” A relationship that began by making up new games like trying to hit a Frisbee with a football has led to the match looking to make up a new business. They’ve discussed working together as entrepreneurs. “Some of the things Robert wants to do long term… I want to be a part of that and help how I can,” said Mack. For Robert, the match means the world to him for one simple reason: “Mack volunteered his time. He didn’t have to do that,” said Robert. “He’s a guy who I needed and still need to motivate me in what I’m doing.”

bartlesville The generous support of the community and the enthusiastic participation of 137 teams raised a total of $125,640 during our annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake Campaign. Youth Bowl for grades 6 through 12 had 27 teams participating and raised an incredible $6,950! BIG Event “Surf’s Up” dinner and auction was enjoyed by all and raised a record-breaking amount of money to support our matches. Cheryl Lyon, Big Sister, shared her inspiring match stories and reminded everyone that being a mentor is truly just about being there for a young person. Our partnership with Lowe Family Young Scholars Program continues to provide youth with the opportunity for academic success and college scholarships. Since 2006, 20 students have graduated from high school, 11 are attending college and 3 have graduated with a college degree.

In Norman, the University of Oklahoma continues to be one of our biggest supporters. Volunteers from all aspects of the university—students, faculty and staff—help us to make quality, life-changing matches. The Fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, hosted an evening of pumpkin carving, and the always-bubbly OU spirit squad attended our Bowl for Kids’ Sake event with our waiting Littles. The Littles certainly enjoyed every minute they got to hang out with the college students! Another great partnership that is rapidly growing is our relationship with the Norman Police Department. Not only do they help us financially through Bowl for Kids’ Sake, they entertained our matches in the annual Cops & Bobbers fishing event. We’re not sure who caught the largest fish, but we know that having the Norman Police Department as a partner is a great catch! Moveable Feast 2017 kicked off with a welcome reception where guests sipped signature cocktails then progressed to the plaza for dinner, suprise performances and an engaging look into the heart and mission of BBBSOK. The night ended with dessert and dancing under the stars in the garden. It was an incredible night *October 1, 2016 - September 30, 2017 supporting our mission and the perfect adieu to summer.

On Christmas Day, Santa showed up for our Littles in the form of Rumble at the Oklahoma City Thunder game! During halftime, Rumble brought the 30 Littles in attendance down on the court for a picture, then proceeded to surprise them with a bike giveaway! The faces of each Little shone brighter than the spotlight that was on them. Every Thunder game throughout the year, at least one Big and Little receive free tickets from the organization, thanks to our ongoing, strong partnership with them. In February, 500 attendees celebrated Big Brothers Big Sisters at the 38th Annual Taste of OKC event held downtown at the Chevy Event Center. Thirty of Oklahoma City’s finest restaurants provided tastes of their best dishes, sponsored by 43 dedicated companies. The Judge Saeid Award was humbly given to the family of long-time donor and volunteer, Aubrey McCLendon, honoring his memory of service and selflessness. Local favorites, My So Called Band, sang hits while everyone danced the night away. Monday, August 21, 2017 held two important historical events- a rare solar eclipse and Oklahoma City’s first ever Big Brothers Big Sisters Golf Tournament. Twin Hills hosted 128 golfers for a first-class golf event. Sponsored by AETNA, golfers teed off with complimentary beer courtesy of Anthem Brewery and played through with eclipse glasses for their viewing pleasure. Golfers and volunteers alike agreed that this inaugural event was a stellar success.

Ponca City became an offical Big Brother Big Sisters of Oklahoma site in September 2016. Lowe’s chose us for their philanthropy project for the year. They put a new face on our office and allowed us to have a wonderful place for our matches to be created. They donated over $5,000 in supplies and donated their time to remodel the space. Phillips 66 was also kind enough to donate the office furniture that was needed for the space to be functional. Floyd Jones and Jodi Cline were an essential part of our office coming to life, and for their efforts we are extremely grateful. We were able to make our first match and begin growing our numbers each month. This was such an exciting step, and we are looking forward to seeing both of their lives being changed for the better, forever.

shawnee Shawnee is proud to announce that two long-term Littles have graduated from high school. Both of these graduating Littles were honored at a reception in May. We know that mentoring brings life-long benefits, and we can’t think of a better benefit than to have our Bigs help Littles graduate from high school on time and ready for the next step in their lives! At our annual Christmas party, we honored the West Law Firm for their strong commitment to mentoring and Big Brothers Big Sister of Oklahoma with the Taylor Prince Memorial Award. We’re excited to have such a successful law firm continue to support us as we provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring mentoring relationships!

stillwater At the Stillwater site, our biggest accomplishment for the year is our matches. Over the last year our matches and our organization have grown extremely close by actively participating in activities together. One of our strongest partnerships is with Kappa Sigma Fraternity at OSU. They sponsor our annual Christmas Party for our matches, and they provide a fun night of games, snacks and presents for each little. We are grateful for their continued support throughout the years, and our matches look forward to this event every year. Meet Me in Paradise was Stillwater’s auction event this year, and it was a big party! Watching our attendees dance around in a congo line will go down as a favorite memory for our office. We are so thankful to have the outpouring of support from our donors, and that is what made our event such a success.

After 32 years of hosting our Taste of Tulsa gala, we decided to go bigger with The Next Big Thing. In addition to celebrating Tulsa’s next big things, our Littles, over 400 attendees watched in awe as we unveiled the world’s largest bowtie. The bowtie, crafted by Tulsa’s very own Two Guys Bow Tie Co., is 16.5 feet and 7.5 feet tall, beating the previous Guinness Book World Record by several feet. Tulsa’s Big Brothers Big Sisters’ program had the incredible opportunity to be the $25,000 primary beneficiary of the 2016 Tulsa Federal Credit Union Tulsa Run. On October 29th, Bigs, Littles, board members and staff woke up early to serve water and Gatorade to the race’s thirsty participants. Racers and Littles alike enjoyed the activity as we cheered on the participants. Little Brother Nate was matched with Big Brother Jay for over 7 years. Nate graduated with honors in 2017 from Union High School. He was chosen as 1 of only 14 Big Brothers Big Sisters of America's Rising Stars! He received a $5,000 stipend from Esurance and Minor League Baseball to attend college at NEO. We are so proud!
