2023 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT

OUR VISION Our vision is that all youth achieve their full potential.

OUR MISSION Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

WHY WE EXIST We exist to clear a path to a child’s biggest possible future by matching them with a caring, volunteer adult mentor in a one-to-one- friendship. This mentor (aka a Big) serves as a consistent presence in the Little’s life. Bigs help Littles ignite, empower, and defend their potential by standing with them as their cheerleader and champion.

BIG BROTHER & LITTLE BROTHER OF THE YEAR

PARKER & SCOTT

Parker was seven years old, in the first grade when his mom, who was raising him on her own, decided that Parker needed a positive, male role model in his life. His mom had to work a lot to make ends meet and she hoped that a Big Brother could do fun things with Parker that she could not do. Parker met his Big Brother, Scott, in April of 2012 and they had a lot of fun together! Parker’s father was never a part of his life and never would be, and mom wanted Parker to have someone to talk to and give him guidance. Scott took this role very seriously and they met consistently for eleven years.

A lot happened in those years. Parker moved through elementary school, junior high and high school, and Scott was there to attend school concerts, sports, and family events. Parker and his mom’s house burned down when he was in junior high, and Scott was there to help them move and be supportive. Scott’s own children graduated high school, moved on to college, then careers, and he became a grandfather all while he and Parker were matched. Parker always had big goals for himself, and Scott was there to encourage him to achieve the things he wanted. Scott shared how he had fun with the “little guy” he first met, but as Parker got older and the things he was interested in grew and changed, he knew they were connected and would always be friends. Parker always had dreams of going away to college, so he worked hard to get good grades, be involved at school, and eventually became a High School Big Brother to a Little Brother who loved spending time with him. Parker headed for the University of Northern Colorado in August 2023 on full scholarship, part of which is through BBBS of Southwest Idaho. He is doing well, maintaining a 4.0 in Biological Science, and he talks to Scott on a regular basis.

LESLIE & SUSAN

BIGS SISTER & LITTLE SISTER OF THE YEAR

Little Sister Leslie and Big Sister Susan were matched in April of 2017 when Leslie was just about to turn 12. Leslie was very shy and quiet. She had a hard time making friends and didn’t have much self-esteem, which are a few of the reasons Leslie’s mom chose to put her in the BBBS program. Other reasons were that Leslie’s mom had just gone through a tough divorce from a man who was mentally and physically abusive, and Leslie had witnessed a lot of this in her 12 years. Leslie’s new Big Sister, Susan, who is an attorney, found out quickly that she would need to put her best advising skills to use as Leslie began to open up about her life, her family, and her trauma. Leslie’s trauma affected her ability to see her self-worth and value in any capacity. Susan knew she had an important role to play in Leslie’s life and worked hard to build Leslie up and help her find her voice, her power, and her drive to do things that were important to her. They met consistently and just when Susan would start to think things were going better, something would happen to disrupt the positive momentum and Susan would start again, redirect, and find new ways to meet Leslie where she was at. Over the years Susan and Leslie’s families also became very connected. Susan spent time at Leslie’s home getting to know her mom, younger brother, and sister well. Susan encouraged Leslie’s mom to apply for a better job with better pay and she got it. Susan’s son danced as an escort of honor at Leslie’s Quinceanera, which meant going to dance rehearsals almost daily for over a month. When Leslie started high school, she became interested in boxing and Susan found someone to give her lessons and encourage her dream. As Leslie approached graduation she was struggling again with negative feelings, fear and not knowing what to do. Susan worried that Leslie was not going to move on to secondary education or vocation or do anything because fear and insecurities were there holding her back. Susan helped Leslie and her mom with college applications, paperwork, and scholarship essays. Finally, after lots of coaching and quiet encouragement, Leslie chose to go to an in-state community college. Susan was relieved and supportive. Leslie is the first person in her family to attend college and her brother will soon follow. Susan and Leslie are still very much a part of each other’s lives.
